wise woman once told me that women A can have it all, they just can’t have it all at once. She was, of course, talking about that
dilemma vexing working mothers the world over as we try to juggle demands of career and family – never mind squeezing a few minutes out of the day for some exercise or a book. What she meant was that we need to take a long-term view of work/life balance – that over the course of a lifetime we might smash through the glass ceiling, be a candidate for mother of the year, develop enriching friendships and maybe learn to mediate or speak French, but we shouldn’t beat ourselves up trying to do everything all the time. I recalled this advice as I read this week’s interview with Megan Gale. Here is a mother, model, actor, and now homewares designer who, appearances suggest, does have it all. But as she reveals to Peter Wilmoth, she’s not immune to the same self-doubts as we mere mortals as we struggle to juggle work and life. Enjoy reading! ●

he face of the contemporary asylum seeker is clearly a bewildering one for many of us. How can they be so desperate and yet have mobile phones? How can they be running in fear of their lives and still care about their teeth? The contemporary Syrian asylum seeker, and the ordinary life that has been so brutally wrenched from them, is going to confound a sometimes rather nervous nation like us: because so many of these desperate, wretched people are almost exactly like us. I’ve been to Syria only once, to Damascus – one of the noisiest, maddest capital cities I’ve set foot in – and also to the famed and now destroyed ancient Roman city of Palmyra. After surviving the most terrifying taxi ride of my life – and they say drivers in Rome are nuts – we encountered a sophisticated and upbeat community managing to live and rear children in a classically paranoid and repressive totalitarian regime. The women all wore black abayas, but their eyes were dramatic with kohl and shadow and, if you looked down, they had some seriously
provocative heels on their perfectly polished and manicured feet. Locals were chatty and engaged, their

understanding of the local geopolitics heavy with irony. The roofed souk was a historical and commercial wonder; the Old City an experience to treasure. It was an amazing city. I find it impossible to believe that these places have been bombed to ruins by a regime prepared to kill its own people, and by opportunistic murderers and maniacs. These people – with lives, jobs, families, schools and communities – have fled under fire, taking boat after boat to get to a place where a real future might be possible. The story – and the distortions of that story – of the father of little Aylan Kurdi is instructive. According to first-hand reports in The Wall Street Journal, Abdullah Kurdi brought his family to Turkey three years ago after fleeing fighting first in Damascus, where he worked as a barber, then in Aleppo, then Kobani. He worked on Turkish construction sites for roughly $17 a day, which was not enough to live on. He wanted to join his sister in Canada and start a life there. As is well known now, Canada refused him asylum. His sister says their father suggested he travel to Europe to get his teeth fixed and try to find a way to get his family out of Turkey. He paid people-smugglers after deciding they should all travel together. Abdullah was the only one who made it. The journey of the contemporary asylum seeker is challenging to us because it does not
take a straight line from, say, napalmed village in Vietnam to refugee boats to the Australian shore. This route travels through countries of equally little hope – economically, socially – in search of a future. It’s similar to the journey my grandfather made before the outbreak of World War II. First to America, then to Australia and then calling for his little family of wife and first son to take a boat and join him. We dismiss such people as “merely economic migrants” now, but Aylan’s family’s journey began in war, and a savage civil one that has displaced millions. The middle class, and the upper middle class, are fleeing Syria (the wealthy got out ages ago), bringing their mobile phones and the rings on their fingers, and middle-class aspirations such as medical and dental care and their hot desire for a life of peace. This is the contemporary face of the asylum seeker, and sometimes it’s a face just like ours. ● Virginia Trioli is co-host of ABC News Breakfast on ABC1 and ABC News 24, 6-9am weekdays

egan Gale is telling me about doing her own stunts in this year’s Mad Max: Fury Road, directed by George Miller. “It was close to zero, I was nude and it was day one,” Megan says. “I was up on a tower and I had to jump on to a rope. And I had to land, dig into the ground and throw on this smock that my character wears, and do it all in one take. That was really tricky, especially when you’re in front of a good 100 crew members.” Thing is, I’m not surprised Megan didn’t have a problem with getting down and dirty. She might have once been one of Italy’s most famous female faces but it’s not in conflict with who the real Megan is, a trooper, no-nonsense businesswoman, a sometimes tired mother of a 16-month-old boy and someone who doesn’t cancel an interview because she has the flu. We’re in a hip café in Windsor. There was a time in Italy at the peak of her fame when
There are unflattering stereotypes involving models. “Dumb, eating disorders, the whole lot,” she says. “Which clearly I don’t have, tucking into fried chicken.” So, she’s smart and astute. And funny, too. In case her CV isn’t impressive enough, Megan has just launched the latest of her several careers, designing homewares for Target. Her MG Australia range includes cotton quilt cover sets, sheets, cushions and throws. In designing the pieces, she drew on inspiration from some of her favourite places including Paris, London and the Greek isles, to “try to interpret them into different stories”. She’s been toying with the idea of design for a while. “It’s knowing what my personal style is and where that can extend into homewares,” she says. “I have a very clear idea of what my own aesthetic is. I know to stay true to that. I’m a super-creative person and this is just another way to express that.” Megan is also keen to do more acting. “I’m starting to actively put myself out there
“There are times when all I want to do is be his mum … But i think it’s still important to have something for myself as an individual” she needed a bodyguard, but today Megan blends into this urban crowd and could be just another stylish Chapel Street café-dweller, if it wasn’t for those famously recognisable dark blue eyes and the dazzling smile. Mad Max was a breakout role for her. I ask whether it’s easier or harder being called Megan Gale when she’s seeking acting roles. “Depends if it’s in Australia or the US. In the US, I’m just a new up-and-coming actress that’s just been in Mad Max. When it’s Australia it’s ‘Oh Megan Gale wants to come in’. ‘Oh. Isn’t she the one who modelled for David Jones?’ There’s that preconceived idea that I’m not an actress, I’m a celebrity or I’m a TV host or an ambassador.” Frustrating? “Not frustrating, it’s more of a hurdle to overcome. I’ve found I’ve got to prove myself more here as an actor. Mad Max has alleviated a bit of that. It was a bit of an unexpected role for me in people’s eyes, especially because it’s gritty and raw and undone and make-up-free with scars on my face. This kind of role is appealing to me because it can help me to be seen physically in a different light. That will help me because it’s stepping out of that skin I’m normally in. “There is that stereotype out there that models are bad actresses,” she says. “I like the idea of trying to disprove that theory. I think it’s a really unfair preconceived notion.”
for roles,” she says. “Learning what material you connect with and what you don’t. I’m still finding all that out.” Megan grew up in Perth as one of three and began her 15-year modelling career aged 18. In 1999 she became a sensation in Italy when she appeared in a series of ads for a telecommunications company. She looks back at the era with affection, but with some surprise that she survived so well in what can be an exploitative industry. “I love that I got to travel, meet and work with different people on different days,” she says. “I liked that it wasn’t Monday to Friday nine to five and it was different all the time.” She lived in Rome, Milan, Tuscany, Switzerland. “I moved around a bit. It was an amazing experience and I had so many wonderful opportunities and made some great friends. That experience changed my life. It was very intense. It was going from being completely anonymous and barely getting work here to going there and being instantly famous, having no privacy, having paparazzi follow you … a complete flip. And having to cope with that as a 23-year-old who’s barely been overseas was massive.” Did she cope OK? “For the most part I did really well. It could have sent me bonkers. But I attribute not losing my mind to having a pretty solid upbringing, great family and
friends, great support around me. “All these amazing things were happening but all these intimidating things were happening at the same time so it was a lot of ‘take in and process’. I went into a bit of an autopilot mode and just tried to stay in the moment as often as possible. “When you reach that level of fame so instantly, it brings interesting people into your life. There are a lot of people trying to take advantage of that and want a piece of that and you’re in a country where you don’t really understand the language. There was a lot to be wary of.” She would move between the craziness of Italy and the relative calm of Sydney. “I’d go to this completely crazy topsy-turvy world in Italy and I’d come back and it would be completely different. It was like I was living two lives, which I think psychologically could really throw someone. I look back and think, ‘My God, I kind of got through that kind of OK’. Looking back I’m proud of how I handled it all.” I read that she loves Bond movies and would one day love to be a Bond girl. Her favourite Bond film? ““Moonraker Moonraker always stuck in my mind as a kid, especially the villain, Jaws.” In Italy, at an event, she met one of the great Bond girls, Ursula Andress, who famously emerged from the sea as Honey Ryder in Dr No, wearing a white bikini featuring a dagger belt. “I thought, ‘I have to say hello to her’. She was sitting at the next table to me at a function. She knew who I was because she was familiar with my work in Italy. That blew me away a bit … She said, ‘Oh Megan, how are you?’ I said, ‘I just wanted to say hi and that I’m quite a fan of Bond films’. She is from that era of Sophia Loren, those amazing women who are just so groomed and so elegant and so chic.” I ask if she enjoys public life. “It would be great to have anonymity at times. I see my job as the thing that’s public, but when it trickles over into my private life, especially now I have my son … you’ve got strange men following you in cars and you think they’re probably a pap (paparazzi). That side of it I don’t like in having a public life.” Megan and her partner, Richmond footballer Shaun Hampson, have a son, River. “Best thing I’ve ever done,” she says. “Hardest thing I’ve ever done. It’s the most rewarding thing. “When you’ve already got such a jam-packed life and the hours in the day seem like they’re not enough when you add a baby to the mix, it’s hard to get that balancing act and to do it all, especially when it’s your first. It’s so overwhelming, it’s the first time

you’ve done it. “There are times when I think all I want to do is be his mum. I don’t want to do anything else but be with him because I enjoy it so much and I want to be so present with him and I want to be hands-on. But at the end of the day … on one hand I think it’s really important to still have something for myself as an individual. I’ve heard a lot from many women of different ages who don’t regret not going back to work but they just sink so much of themselves into their kids, and when their kids grow up and move away from home they have nothing left. “They don’t have any interests and they’ve lost touch with who they are because … they’ve given so much of themselves to their children that they lose a large portion of themselves and they find it hard to get that back. It’s such a wonderful sacrifice. I want to find that balance of still maintaining a sense of self while still nurturing my son. “I want to continue to provide a great future and life for him. It’s important for me to still work not just for myself – and I love what I do – but for my son.”
A
nd a word on Shaun? “He’s amazing. He’s kind, he’s thoughtful, he’s an incredible father. We’re an extremely good team. I’m really proud of us as a couple. When we started together there was a lot of criticism because of our age difference (Megan is 40 and Shaun is 27), which kind of upset me. I think if he was older than me we wouldn’t have so many people commenting on it. It seemed to be because I’m the woman and I’m older that there were labels thrown around – ‘toy boy’, ‘cougar’ – that really disappointed me. For me our ages are irrelevant. I really do feel like we’re both really on par with one another. “I felt that was really unfair. I think people felt we were maybe a bit ‘flash in the pan’. But we both knew what we meant to one another and I guess that’s all that matters. And now we’ve got this beautiful little man that we’ve created together and he’s the centre of our universe. We communicate well and I think that’s why we’ve got such a strong relationship.” Megan says goodbye and walks out into Chapel Street. It’s been a gutsy performance from someone with the flu; not the first gutsy performance in her life and certainly not the last. ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au » The MG Australia collection is now in more than 100 Target stores and online at www.target.com.au

It’s Tiffany-blue cover picks up the glossy handmade tiles lining the rear wall, while the curves of the bar are repeated subtly in menu boards and monogrammed wine glasses. Mr Stylist points out the rustic-tiled front terrace with its curved tan-leather-padded seats – and I’m in Euro-inspired décor heaven. e all have our “first world problems” and I was faced with one recently: I had to choose a bottle of wine to take to a dinner with a winemaker. Choosing a bottle of wine for dinner may seem a trivial thing, but it genuinely kept me awake the night before as I tried to think of the right wine, or wines, to take. Red or white, one bottle or two, local or imported? These and other worries, such as regionality, were running around my head until an idea struck: I’d take a sticky dessert wine! Dessert wines come in two styles – complex botrytis-affected wines, and clean, intensely flavoured examples. Botrytis, or noble rot, is a fungus that draws moisture out of the grapes and leaves the remaining juice rich and concentrated, with distinct marmalade and honeysuckle notes along with the characters of the grape. Another style is known as cane-cut, where the canes that sprout the bunches are severed from the vine, cutting off the flow of nutrients and causing the grapes

to shrivel and their flavours to intensify as they ripen. There’s also ice wine, where the grapes are left on the vine well into winter when they’re harvested frozen and pressed, leaving behind ice crystals inside the grapes to reveal sweet, intensely flavoured juice. ● BEN THOMAS bthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au
Fraser Gallop Estate froze the grapes in its Ice Pressed Chardonnay ($34) before the juice was frozen and fermented in oak barrels just like a chardonnay. It smells like a lovely chardonnay – stone fruit, citrus, spice and blossom before sweet nectarine and peach flavours attack the tongue, followed by a swoop of grapefruit acid. 94/100

ven with MIFF done and dusted, Melbourne isn’t lacking for film festivals. Our calendar is filled with Russian, Indonesian, Czech and Slovak seasons and it seems a new one springs up every other week. Given that, you might think it was getting difficult for the old hands to draw a crowd. Not so for Elysia Zeccola Hill, director of the Lavazza Italian Film Festival. “I don’t feel there’s a sense of competition,” Elysia says. “The more film festivals there are out there, the more you create that appetite in audiences to come and see something new.” She says attendances are on the rise, despite cinemas finding themselves up against stiff competition from home theatres and illegal downloads. More than 70,000 people attended last year’s festival and this year Elysia hopes to crack 80,000. Part of this success, she says, is making sure the festival offers more than film. “We try to create an Italian experience, a great event that’s celebrating the culture. We put a lot of importance on the hospitality side, with beautiful Italian wines and coffee.” Still, the film is the thing. There’s certainly no shortage of great titles, including a rare
GOD WILLIN G
screening of the Bertolucci classic The Conformist. Elysia singles out Euro crime drama Black Souls, award-winning adaptation The Dinner and absurd comedy Mia Madre as personal highlights. There’s also So Far So Good. Opening night selection God Willing promises to be a crowd-pleaser that will set an upbeat tone for the gala launch, to be held at the Astor Theatre for the first time. While some will associate romance and glamour with Italian cinema, Elysia says the appeal for her is the chance to see something different to the usual film fare. “Generally speaking, what I like about Italian films is there’s a level of unpredictability. Sometimes with American films, you know from the first scene how it’s going to end. If you can’t guess, then they’re usually spoon-feeding you with lots of voiceovers. With Italian films, I don’t know where they’re taking me and I really love that feeling.” ● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au » Lavazza Film Festival runs September 15 to October 11, palacecinemas.com.au

First love is the hardest to shake. I fell for Doctor Who long before I learnt about girls and still can’t quite let go, even if recent series have been somewhat uninspiring. Peter Capaldi is a striking, slightly Tom Baker-esque Doc, although it wouldn’t hurt to see him smile now and then. His arch foe The Master (now “Missy” after a welcome gender-flip) returns for the opening two-parter, but the real enemy is writing that feels increasingly glib and lazy. ● ONLINE \ The new series trailer

back then, too, but no one knew what that meant). Play School was so politically correct, age-appropriate and carefully designed that every kid thought it was on just for them. My oldest used to answer all the questions out loud. I’d be unpacking the dishwasher and hearing “Jemima is over there, Alex”, and “No, no Karen, not that book today”. Four years ago, Eddie Perfect joining the team would have been major news in our house. We might have all sat down and watched it together, which is something a mother never did during Play School because that half-hour of peace was not to be wasted, unless perhaps Jay Laga’aia was on. All the mums and I agreed Eddie is a most able replacement. He is great with nursery rhymes. To be honest, I was always just a little bit partial to Rhys Muldoon. n the first week Eddie Perfect was on Play School there was a ratings spike, reportedly because all the mums were watching the show even if the kids weren’t. The sad thing is I’m about three months behind the news because Play School is no longer part of my daily routine. Eddie joined the team back in May, apparently. Yes, I know I referenced him in my column last week too but I promise I don’t have a problem or a mad middle-aged crush. It’s just that I was talking to other mums about Play School recently and how we all miss it now the kids have moved on to The Sims and ABC3, and that’s how I found out Eddie was on the show. Play School was such a wholesome punctuation mark to a parent’s day, the only half-hour where we could safely rest, have a cuppa and read emails uninterrupted (some of us had kids way back in the pre-smartphone, dial-up days, so checking emails was stressful. You had to put the phone plug into your computer and wait for a dial tone. Apparently you could get broadband

Away characters and still together and all grown up now. It always made my day in an existential kind of way. Similarly, in another existential moment for a middle-aged woman who might not get out that often, I recently went to a grown-up venue to see Justine Clarke and Tex Perkins perform songs from the iconic Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra album. Justine was dressed in a luminous, shiny ballgown and sang like a bird. She was just gorgeous.

Where do you go for a great cup of coffee? Hobba in Prahran; they do a really good coffee. They do great breakfasts and great muffins as well. It’s a really cool space. For an amazing meal? Cucinetta. It’s a beautiful little Italian restaurant. It’s
tiny – fits about 16 people. It’s got a great little menu with three or four options for entrée and main and dessert and it changes every week. For a wonderful glass of wine? Toorak wine cellars. It’s actually in Armadale, I think, but it’s really close to our house. It’s a super-cool quirky little wine bar with communal seating, a really cool wine list and knowledgeable staff. To relax? The Royal Botanic Gardens. If the weather is good, my wife and I will do a picnic. If the weather’s being Melbourne-like, we’ll go to the Palace Como to watch a movie. To buy the perfect gift? For my wife, usually I’ll go to The Fresh Flower Man on Malvern Road. It’s a beautiful store. The reality Make-up artist Adrian Lampard explains the three looks he’ll teach me – an everyday look, a stronger evening look and a high-glam, going-to-the-Logies kind of look. (Hey, a girl can dream.) He goes through my make-up kit to see if my stuff’s any good. The main thing I need to update is brushes, as I’m currently using the little spongy ones that came with my Maybelline. We start with eyes. Yep, that’s right, even before your foundation, you’re meant to put on your eyes. This is so you don’t mess with your concealer if you get overzealous with the eyeliner and need to reach for the wipes. We start with light colours and work our way up to the dark. Adrian does one eye and I do the other, and I’m surprised that I’m able to mimic his work reasonably well. We move on to the all-important eyebrow colouring and face contouring. Then we add some concealer under the eyes and bronzer under the cheekbones to make them look Angelina-high.

ideally in writing. Where alcohol is present, adults must supervise and might need extra security. Gate crashers are a big issue, especially if the event was advertised online. Police urge parents to register teen parties with them so they can keep an eye out. Even with the best intentions, things can turn ugly with inexperienced drinkers. But there is hope. Don’t assume your child wants or needs alcohol. Our daughter had her 16th this year, a combined party with two friends at a scout hall. It was alcohol and problem free. They even had fun, with lots of dancing and the usual girl-boy stuff. No one snuck in grog and, from what we saw, it was drug free. It almost felt like an episode of Absolutely Fabulous, where Eddie’s daughter Saffron chastises her mother for her boozing and immaturity. It was a nice surprise, but we know it is unlikely to last forever. ● ccritchley@theweeklyreview.com.au

hould you let your 16-year-old have alcohol? This is a tough one, especially for parents who had had a sip or two (or 10) when they were that age. Drinking has long been considered a rite of passage for teenagers and its social acceptability makes many parents turn a blind eye. In Australia, parents are actually the most common source of grog for underage drinkers. But times have changed and research has demonstrated that alcohol is harmful for teenage brains, which are still developing until they are 25. This puts parents in a dilemma. Do you let your child drink at 16 or 17? There are no easy answers. A blanket ban might lead to secret drinking and peer pressure is huge – teens can be ostracised if their parents won’t let them drink. If you allow alcohol at parties, you must know the law. In Victoria, it is illegal to serve alcohol to someone else’s underage child (that is, under 18) unless you have parental consent,

THE DIRECTOR O F PA S T O R A L C A R E Our job at the school is to educate students about the dangers of drinking. Since the new National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines came out in 2009, how we educate about drugs and alcohol has evolved to a harm minimisation approach that encourages kids to abstain for as long as possible. They learn that their brain is still under construction and drinking can have an impact on how it develops … and how they make decisions. We have a night for year 7 and 8 parents ,and in year 9 we have a session with students and their parents. We highlight the impact of drinking on the adolescent brain. NHMRC guidelines say before you are 15, you shouldn’t drink and between 15 and 17 you should delay drinking for as long as possible. Some parents have a zero-tolerance approach and others favour harm minimisation. Regardless, it’s about having honest relationships and honest discussions … boundaries and expectations. It’s about providing strategies for parents as well. We encourage parents to be in contact with one another and have a bit of a team approach. They should also monitor their own drinking habits. We have to be mindful of that as well. ● RHIANNON McGEE director of pastoral care, Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak. www.loretotoorak.vic.edu.au
THE POLICY EXPERT There’s new evidence that the brain continues to develop until the mid-20s. Alcohol can be toxic to the developing brain and cause lasting problems. If people start drinking in their early teens they are not only vulnerable to alcohol-related injury and harm, it also tends to set them up for regular drinking in adolescence and that then makes them more susceptible to alcohol dependence in early adulthood. Medical researchers now advise people not to drink before they’re 18. We say to parents: do not encourage young people to drink, do not provide them with alcohol and explain to young people exactly what the situation is. It’s a change from the advice we were giving out 10 years ago. Then it was more about preventing intoxication. The good news is the latest Australian consumption figures show a declining trend in drinking among adolescents. In 2010, 40 per cent of 12-17-year-olds had had a standard drink. In 2013 it was 28 per cent. That’s a substantial reduction. Fewer parents are allowing drinking. If your teen wants alcohol at their 16th or 17th birthday party, consider another activity that doesn’t involve alcohol … maybe a dinner or a movie. ● GEOFF MUNRO Australian Drug Foundation national policy officer adf.org.au

n the course of his work, Stephen Crafti meets some of the design world’s brightest talents. The architecture and design writer, whose work has appeared in publications including The Age and The Australian Financial Review Review, surrounds himself with their works both at home and in his office – which is just a flight of stairs down from the living quarters he shares with wife, Naomi. “Eventually we want to put in an internal staircase, but for now we use the stairs outside. It kind of separates home from work, so I don’t mind,” Stephen says of the 1930s duplex in South Yarra. When he’s not writing his latest book, Stephen leads architecture and design tours in Melbourne and overseas. ● LEEYONG SOO lsoo@theweeklyreview.com.au
O U T D O O R WA L L M I R R O R Since moving here I’ve become obsessed with gardens. I commissioned this mirror for the wall from Helen Macfarlane at Outlines in South Melbourne – I love its distressed look. It sits above a fireplace I found on the hard rubbish and I love the play of old and new.

My favourite thing Suzie Stanford is an upcycler – this is a 1950s highback chair upholstered with tapestries she sources from around the world. Some of the Mona Lisas on the chair are pasty-faced, some are cross-eyed, some are perfect. That’s what I love about it. Suzie sells in Lane Crawford but only works to order here in Australia.

PORTR AIT OF HARVEY
When Patricia Urquiola was pregnant with her first child she was smocking a baby’s garment and thought it would be great to see businessmen sitting in something childlike, and designed this smocked chair. I’d interviewed her a few times and loved the back story, so ordered the chair from Hub Furniture and Lighting.
I’d seen this screen by Simon Leah in a showroom and loved it, and when I moved here I contacted Simon to ask him what had happened to it. It was in storage as it hadn’t sold, so I bought it. It’s called Adam and Eve, with Eve facing out at the moment and Adam on the reverse. This was all done by hand, maybe based on a photo.
Megan Hess gave me this portrait of my cat (well, he’s more like my child!), Harvey, that she sketched from a photo. Megan has sketched Michelle Obama too, so I like to think that if Harvey and Michelle met, they’d have something in common. SEPTEMBER 16, 2015 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 23

Setting the scene
There was no thought I was going to be a footballer, that it would just happen. Even when I got drafted I thought they’d keep me around for a year before they realised I was no good.
WHERE I GREW UP
CAMERON LING
ON A MISSION This was taken on a family holiday – and probably the best family holiday we ever went on – to Mission Beach in North Queensland in 1987 (I’m in the white top). It was just incredible – we did everything; went to the sugar mills in Tully and out to the Great Barrier Reef.

Now & then When we first moved to Newtown there were one or two houses on the hillside other side of Barwon River. By the time I moved out 15 years later it was covered in new houses. Geelong had grown so much by then!

f any footballer can claim to have begun their career on the MCG, it’s Cameron Ling. For this was the nickname his family bestowed on the back paddock of their home in Moolap on Geelong’s urban fringe as the premiership-winning former Cats captain and now host of Melbourne Weekender recalls. It’s the hallowed turf of many happy childhood memories for Cameron, his older brother David and younger sister Amelia. “Almost all of my recollections of that place are of the outside. I swear it mustn’t have rained back then because it seems like I was outdoors 24/7,” Cameron laughs. “Dad had turned it into a sporting heaven. In one of the paddocks he’d mown a cricket pitch and made a golf green at the other end. We used the trees as goal posts for footy.” When Cameron was eight the Ling family moved to Newtown, nearer Geelong’s heart. “The new house was in a great spot near an oval and overlooking the Barwon River so there was still that feeling of space. It was also double-storey and we thought the stairs were the coolest thing, they were in one flight straight up and I doubt you would get them past a building inspection today. A couple of times we might have taken the trundle
bed mattress out and slid down the stairs.” But here, too, Cameron and his siblings were mostly to be found outdoors. “There were a couple of pipes running up the side of the house and they were my goal posts. Trouble was the kitchen window was in the middle. We only broke that window twice … we should have broken it 200 times. I don’t know how mum didn’t throttle me.” In truth Cameron’s mum Laurel, a palliative care nurse, and dad, Linton, a manager for the Costa fruit and vegetable company, had little trouble with any of their offspring … except perhaps getting them to eat their greens. “There were always lots of fruit and vegetables in our house partly thanks to dad’s job. Eventually all of us were allowed one vegetable we didn’t have to eat. For my sister it was silverbeet, for me beans and for my brother Brussels sprouts.” The Ling family always ate together, but once or twice a year they had a special themed banquet. “Mum’s an amazing cook and she would do a special three or four-course dinner. The dining table was set formally and we all got dressed up like it was a night out at a fancy restaurant. Mum would teach us about the different cutlery for each dish. Afterwards we would have music and
My first DINK A LING This is a pretty good snapshot of my older brother David (front) and me when I was little. Apparently this was a common sight – him riding me around. I wish I still had that bike for my two boys.
KISS
It was one of those kisses under instruction at primary school, like “you kiss him” and “you kiss her” sort of thing. It was not completely memorable. I did have a bit of a crush on Kylie Minogue when she was in Neighbours.
ALBUM
Happily dad brainwashed me into loving ’60s music; the Beatles, Buddy Holly, the Beach Boys, but I half-rebelled and bought AC/DC’s The Razors Edge on cassette. I love them too still.
CONCERT
Mum and dad took us to Glenn Shorrock when I was maybe eight. Mum and dad and my sister went to Peter, Paul & Mary when I was away on a footy thing and I was shattered I missed it. Honestly, I used to listen to Simon and Garfunkel on the way to play footy, it’s not your usual fire-up music.

play games like charades.” “Every year in June-July we would go on holidays to Queensland. We spent a great time together swimming, walking, playing 500 (card game) after dinner. We spent those two weeks just the five of us having a ball together and they are some of my best memories. “I’ve taken a lot of things out of my childhood,
but that is definitely something I want to do with my kids; just us as a family spending time together.” ● SARAH HARRIS sarahharris@theweeklyreview.com.au » Cameron Ling hosts Melbourne Weekender on Channel Seven, Saturdays at 5.30pm.

his house could be one of the reasons people fall in love with the Tara Estate in Camberwell. Clifton is a unique blend of the arts and crafts style, with Queen Anne aesthetics and design elements. It was designed by Butler and Ussher, one of the city’s most influential late 19th-century architectural firms. Walter Butler was in partnership with Beverley Ussher between 1889 and 1893. Ussher then joined Henry Kemp in Ussher and Kemp, whose Queen Anne-style houses became a distinctive Melbourne style. Many of Butler’s clients were pastoralists and wealthy businessmen. He designed large, picturesque, gabled houses in Toorak, as well as country estates. But it was rare for him to work east of Glenferrie Road, which makes this house even more significant. Built in 1891, it is in a tree-lined street – some say the best in the estate – and has a wealth of period detail inside and out. A testament to its staying power as a family home is that it has had just five owners since it was built. Most stay at least 25 years – except the first, who are believed to have sold in 1892, when an economic depression hit. The vendors have lived at Clifton for 28 years. They have extended and modernised it, while making sure to retain and respect its heritage features and nurture its garden and grounds. Some of the trees date back 100 years. Vivid crimson-blossomed rhododendrons, as tall as trees, soar up past the first-floor balcony. They might be old, but they still flower beautifully. Contemporary landscaping includes walls of Grampian sandstone and Castlemaine slate paving and extensive use of shrubs and perennials expressly chosen for a lower-water environment. The house is a beautiful mixture of the formal and informal. Three elegant reception rooms make ideal entertainment spaces. They include a sitting room, formal drawing room and dining room at the front of the house. There’s also a large informal family hub and kitchen. Earlier this year the family hosted a wedding in the front garden,

followed by lunch in the back garden and a big party at night. Other celebrations have included 18th birthday parties, 50ths and beyond. The formal front of the house has high ceilings, original Baltic pine floorboards and open fireplaces. Internal timber doors have nine panels and the staircase – in perfect condition – is made from kauri. A study in the front section of the house has a built-in desk made from red gum. Like earlier owners who “modernised” Clifton in the 1920s by installing a terrazzo porch and rendering the façade, the vendors have put their stamp on the property. Architects Swaney Draper completed a large extension of the kitchen in 1995, combined with a north-facing living area, two bedrooms and a laundry. The kitchen, with its Paul Bocuse double oven, white cabinets and timber bench, still looks a treat. They also built a wide verandah that wraps around the back and sides of the house. The back garden, in common with the gardens in many substantial houses, is a playground, a haven for sporty families, and a terrific space for entertaining. It has a championship-sized north-south tennis court (in excellent condition), an in-ground trampoline and a swimming pool with a covered entertainment area nearby. Unlike many Victorian houses, Clifton is surprisingly light, even on a dull winter’s day. This is particularly noticeable upstairs, where all six bedrooms get lots of natural light. The main bedroom, with its en suite and walk-in wardrobe, measures almost seven metres by five metres. One of the two front bedrooms has double doors onto a balcony. This house is great as it is, but it also has heaps of potential for anyone wanting to do their own thing. What they won’t want to change are the light-filled interiors and the views of the garden from every room. ● MARIA HARRIS property@theweeklyreview.com.au

This three-bedroom Victorian house has a contemporary edge but maintains its period charm. Although the wisteria that decorates the iron lacework is yet to bloom, the house’s façade is still pretty as a picture. Inside, a wide hallway caters for a classic layout. All the spaces are handsomely finished with dark timber floors and a neutral palette of greys and whites. The main bedroom at the front is a ripper. Built-in wardrobes offer lots of storage space and white plantation shutters screen the long windows. Next along is the living room, which has a relaxed ambience. An original fireplace with recycled red bricks creates a sense of warmth and comfort. It is flanked by cabinetry and bookshelves, offering plenty of opportunities to display books and treasures. Another wall with built-in shelving separates this space from the kitchen. French doors open to a low-maintenance garden, which has a lawn and border planting. A plunge pool and terrace lend themselves to multiple rounds of playing host, especially in summer. ● FRANCESCA CARTER
Bold yet dignified, this modern house in Balwyn’s western fringe is anything but ordinary. Built in 2006, it’s hard not to recognise the European oak parquetry floors upon entry. At the front, a carpeted guest bedroom with modern en suite sits opposite a study. From here, a carpeted sitting room benefits from high ceilings and tall windows either side of a gas fireplace. A billiard room hides behind the central staircase while, further to the rear, the house steps down to an open-plan family room, meals area and white marble kitchen. Bifold doors extend this space to an outdoor courtyard and pool while nearby you’ll find a home theatre on one side and a laundry and pool-accessible bathroom on the other. The basement has a six-car garage plus a gym and sound-insulated music room. Upstairs, two additional and spacious bedrooms exude an almost hotel-like feel with thick drapery and luxurious grey stone en suite bathrooms, while the main bedroom features a walk-in wardrobe and impressive spa en suite with dual vanities. ● JULIAN HEALEY

HAWTHORN EAST \ 6 LAWSON STREET Is Hawthorn East our forgotten suburb? Once the home of two huge coal gas holders and our first drive-in movie, this hilly area is now prized for its amenity and convenience. Lawson Street is typical. It is lined with flowering natives and comfortable houses from the interwar decades; palazzo-style newcomers are rare. Number six was built 15 years ago but it could have been completed last week. It sits on a high corner block, with a well-designed garden. The double garage at the south has freed the northern half of the block for a heated pool with a water feature. The ground floor is open-plan but there’s a discrete study and sitting room. The kitchen, butler’s pantry, laundry and cloak room are triumphs of exquisitely detailed cabinetry and integration of equipment. The upper floor, reached by an open staircase, contains an elaborate main bedroom with balcony, two dressing rooms and a bathroom with heated floor and dual basins. At the northern end of the floor, three children’s bedrooms surround a family bathroom. The house is air-conditioned and has good views to the city. Two primary and two high schools – Bialik College and Auburn High – are nearby, as are Anderson Park, the Monash Freeway and Citylink. ● NEIL CLEREHAN

This Californian bungalow opposite Central Park has much going for it. Set well back from the street, the house has a pretty façade. Following a traditional floor plan, a wide hallway opens to the more formal, quieter rooms of the house. To the left is the main bedroom, which has the style and grace of another era. Light pours in from north-facing leadlight windows. Across the hall is the formal living and dining room, which is adorned with timber skirts, linings and frames and has a glorious decorative ceiling. An original timber fireplace anchors the room. In keeping with the original architecture, the back half of the house has been tastefully renovated to offer lots of space. A pitched roofline allows opportunity for natural light, which is dragged into the interior through a series of skylights. The informal meals and living area overlooks the spectacular back garden, and there are three sets of glass doors that access the area and take in the wonderful views. A grassy lawn borders the pool, which has a spa and water feature. ● FRANCESCA CARTER
With a modern design, relaxed interior and spacious floor plan, this brand new duplex is a ready-to-move-in prospect close to trains, schools and parks. Past the bluestone porch and red-brick exterior, the interior has classic features such as timber floors and plantation shutters, as well as modern touches such as video security, ducted heating and cooling and downlights. An impressively wide hall extends from the front lounge past the attached tandem double garage and the powder room and into a luxuriously large, open-plan living and dining room and kitchen. Bifold doors expand this bright space out to an outdoor dining area and grassed yard. The kitchen has stone benchtops, glossy cabinets and stainless-steel appliances. A separate laundry is nearby. Up on the first floor, all four bedrooms are carpeted and surround a sky-lit retreat. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with a freestanding bathtub, while the other three have built-in wardrobes. One has its own en suite, the other two share the main bathroom. ● JULIAN HEALEY

Its 1928 birthdate makes this handsome Californian bungalow a youngster in the Grace Park Estate, which is noted for its Federation-era avenues. It’s a premium address for those who host corporate entertainment at home as it features impressive living and dining rooms. A rear sunny lounge and meals area opens northwest to a glass-fenced deck, a sweet spot for the family. The single-storey house is freshly painted white, offset by charcoal-grey doors and carpet and Victorian ash floorboards. Original glass doors link the wide central hall with the living room, where a leadlight bay window is complemented by feature windows that flank the open fireplace. A shallow arch leads to the dining room. Both rooms have panelled ceilings adorned with central floral garlands. The main bedroom has a bay window, walk-in wardrobe and a cream-tiled en suite with twin basins and a walk-in shower. Two further double bedrooms have built-in or walk-in wardrobes. The spacious family area has bifold doors to a carpeted study with full-length windows. The granite and timber kitchen has a Bosch wall oven and dishwasher and a Chef gas cooktop. Below the deck is a patio, lawn and double garage with right-of-way. Grace Park, schools, trams, train and shops are within a few minutes’ walk. ● ALISON BARCLAY

Morrell. Going. Going. You’re gone? The home that’s won your heart is about to be auctioned. Anything could happen. Should you make an offer before the auction? When? How? How much? That’s easy. Just persuade the agents that you know the market better than they do, that the offer you’re making won’t be beaten under the hammer and that they won’t be humiliated by having to settle for something less. (But don’t over-pay.) Well, maybe it’s not all that easy.
