have to admit working on TWR has its perks. Each week we get to meet Australia’s most fascinating people and see inside the city’s most fabulous homes. hen Olympic swimming gold medallist Michael Klim was asked to support a campaign encouraging men to paint a nail to show support and raise funds for children affected by sexual and physical violence, he didn’t hesitate. Michael is the face of a campaign called the Polished Man, engineered by not-for-profit group YGap. “One in five kids are being affected by sexual and physical violence; it’s an alarming figure,” Michael says. “No kid should experience that.” Michael is supporting the campaign’s second year and meets us just off the plane from Bali where his three children – Frankie, five, Rocco, eight and Stella, 10 – and his former partner Lindy are based, and where Michael continues to spend much of his time. Being a parent has resulted in Michael focusing on the needs of children. “Your kids put all this trust in you. You’re their protector. [This cause] really resonated with me.” He was inspired by YGap chief executive Elliot Costello’s story, which triggered the idea for the Polished Man. During a visit to a Cambodia, Elliot met a young girl called Thea with whom he played noughts and crosses and other games for hours. Thea drew a heart on Elliot’s palm and then painted his nails blue. The next day Elliot learned that Thea had been subjected to physical and sexual assault daily by a doctor at the orphanage she had been sent to after her father died. Elliot shared similar stories involving other young girls. “These girls who were affected by sexual and physical violence were so withdrawn and to find a way of communicating with them he sat down and they started painting their nails and then they painted his,” Michael says. “He kept that as a sign of connecting with them. It was a really personal experience Elliot had. It pulls at my heart strings.” Michael says wearing one painted fingernail is a way of drawing useful attention to the issue. “It’s actually works,” he says. “The first time I put nail polish on my finger people said, ‘Why are you wearing blue or pink nail polish?’ The awareness has been great.” Michael, who retired from competitive swimming in 2007 (there was an unsuccessful comeback for the London Olympics) is happy to use his profile for such great causes. “I thought you needed to be someone like Bono or Elton John or Angelina Jolie to make a difference … but it’s nice for me to be able to use my profile for good, so it’s quite rewarding from my point of view – you can be a retired swimmer and have an influence on the world.” ●

W
hen Olivia Newton-John spends time with people at the Cancer Wellness and Research Centre named in her honour at the Austin Hospital, it’s all she can do to hold in her tears until she has left. “It’s very moving and emotional for me,” she says. “Usually I cannot display that until I leave, but in my heart I feel incredible empathy and compassion for people. I’ve been in rooms with people who are dying and I’ve spoken to their friends and relatives.” Last month on a visit to her home town, Olivia walked around the $185-million centre, which opened in 2013. “There were so many stories,” she says. “A woman came up to me and said “I got married at the ONJ’. I said, ‘Oh my goodness’. “She said, ‘My husband was dying and it was his last wish’. That moved me to tears. She thanked me so much for the centre and the care her husband had received. Those things make an imprint on your heart, how something you are involved with has touched someone else’s life and impacted them.” Olivia was approached by Austin Health to

uy Grossi has heard many stories from the “brave young people”, kids aged from five to 14, he has met in his 12 years as an ambassador with the Starlight Children’s Foundation. “You can tell there’s still a joy of life there but it’s staggering how brave these little guys can be,” Guy says. “Their capacity to be positive, I find that astounding. It tears at the heart strings. “Some kids really open up and tell you how they’ve been in and out of hospital all their lives. You sit there and listen and often it gets quite emotional. They’re quite happy to exchange stories. Some are a lot more closed but will participate and have some fun.” The Starlight Children’s Foundation works to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families, proclaiming that, “We disrupt the relentless cycle of pain and trauma and offer a welcome break so that sick kids can simply be kids”. It’s powerful work, which is what attracted Guy to the cause. He first participated 12 years ago in what became an annual Five Chefs dinner, a gala event at which everything is donated, including the chefs’ time, food, wine and auction items (this year’s dinner attracted 550 people and raised $380,000). He has worked regularly with the foundation, even inviting
children and their families into his restaurant, Grossi Florentino, to cook. “They made pizzas that we sent into the kitchen to be baked off; it was a lot of fun and then they sat down and had lunch.” He is moved by the children’s strength. “You look at them and they still have so much energy and passion. It’s very moving because you say, ‘Bloody hell, I was complaining about something so trivial’ and you’re confronted with this and it puts your own life in some perspective.” Guy also donates his time to helping raise awareness and funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, as well as a youth re-engagement program based in South Melbourne called HEAT (Hospitality Education and Training). The young people participating learn new skills in a commercial kitchen built in the former South Melbourne Primary School. “I’ve found it’s really helped with self-esteem issues. We’ve had some pretty good success stories,” he says. ●

Luke Hodge awthorn footballer Luke Hodge remembers the 10-year-old Hawks supporter who, after having been diagnosed with cancer, ran out on to the MCG through the banner with the players. He and Hawthorn legend Shane Crawford later met up with him for a kick. “He got rid of the cancer but it came back once or twice,” Luke says. “Crawf and me went and had a kick with him. He had an absolute ball. It was one of those little things that we can do to try and put a smile on their face and get their mind off the ordeal they’re going through.” Luke has been an ambassador for My Room, a children’s cancer charity, since 2008. Becoming a father – he has three boys aged eight, three and nine months – inspired him to be involved. “That was one of the main reasons why I started. I’d do visits and then when I had a son myself I saw kids the same age as Cooper, a few months old, who had been diagnosed. It really tugged on the heart strings.” In August Luke took part in a special telethon edition of The Footy Show supporting My Room

lend her name to the facility. She agreed on the condition that a wellness centre was included, and she was instrumental in gaining support from then premier John Brumby. The centre offers programs such as massage, meditation, music and art therapy. Olivia is proud of its work and gratified she can help. She says families tell her the care is amazing. “That just warms my heart, because we have incredible staff that really care about the people that we’re taking care of in a beautiful facility with a lot of daylight that doesn’t feel like a hospital, which helps with healing,” she says. “That’s what inspired me to get involved in the first place. “Having gone through cancer myself, I totally understand what it’s like and what you need. You need to be in a place that makes you feel comfortable. I do feel for them. I like to offer them the hope that they will be healthy like I am.” Olivia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and has been cancer-free for 20 years. Olivia is also involved in the Wellness Walk, held in September, which this year raised $200,000 for the centre’s work. As well as lending her profile to the event, it’s an opportunity for her to meet people who have been touched by cancer. “As I was walking along people would come and talk to me. I’d ask them who they were walking for and they shared the story, whether it was their aunt, their mother, their grandparent, their brother …” ●
and featuring some of the AFL’s biggest names. Luke says working with My Room provides perspective on his own life. “Every day we complain about little things that in hindsight are very minor. When you go and see young kids going through such a terrible time, you can’t imagine what the parents and brothers and sisters are going through as well. It does put things in perspective.” He notes that his industry is a good contributor. “We’ve had a lot of footballers who have been involved, Juddy [Chris Judd] and Bally [Luke Ball] did a lot early on, Joel Selwood has done a heap as well and [there are] 30 or 40 footballers [at the telethon] who give up their time every year,” he says. “As footballers we do a lot of hospital visits and see kids as young as a couple of months old who have been diagnosed with cancer, to young teenagers. You see some who are obviously really struggling energy-wise and physically. Also, you see some of the kids, how positive they are. Anything anyone can do to try and help out and put a smile on one of the kids’ faces or raise some money – you do whatever you can, in any way you can. At 28, cabaret whiz Toby Francis, one of the Ten Tenors, is about to debut as Charlie Price in the Australian premiere of Broadway smash Kinky Boots, at Her Majesty’s Theatre, with music written by Cyndi Lauper. Another Aussie, Joel Edgerton, played Charlie in the 2005 movie version. What’s the buzz? Cassie Tongue at aussietheatre.com wrote that Toby’s tenor “slides into guttural rock or pure falsetto with surprising suppleness”, his acting some of the finest seen in cabaret. Arts writer Jo Litson lauded as “clever” Toby’s self-penned Love and Death and an American Guitar Guitar, in which he played composer Jim Steinman. In the beginning … Precocious Toby gave adults headaches growing up in Canberra, keen to sing but avoiding schoolwork. “In my third week of kinder, I asked my teacher if I could go out for a drink. She said yes, so I climbed out the window, because it seemed quicker.” After a year 7 high school music class, a fellow student informed Toby he couldn’t sing, “so I then decided it was something I wanted to get good at”.
The big break … Singer David Campbell took Toby under his wing in 2011 after he saw him win the Australian Cabaret Showcase. He directed Toby’s show Blokelahoma!, which played at Melbourne’s tiny Butterfly Club. “There’s definitely 40 people in Melbourne who saw Blokelahoma!” says Toby. Where to now? Expect more original work from Toby’s pen. He and his fiancee, set designer Lauren Peters – they met in high school – also have their own production company, Highway Run Productions. The best part about success? “I didn’t have a choice about working in the arts, because everything else makes me miserable. So to book any job performing makes me [say]: ‘I’m not fated to be miserable; I can actually make a career’.” If I could do it all again … “I’d probably drink less beer at 19, and not have taken my youthful metabolism for granted.” ● STEVE DOW

Cab franc is the least-known of the three red Bordeaux grapes – cabernet sauvignon and merlot are the others – and one you rarely see as a straight variety. Perfumed plum and redcurrant aromas have a grassy, herbal character that extends to the earthy berry flavours on the palate. Fine-grained tannins provide a gentle grip. ●

THE VERDICT
’ve got a confession to make: tiny, timber-trimmed Chalawan was such a sweet surprise package that I was tempted to keep it to myself. The problem with telling people about petite places is that you end up queuing to get into them. Who has time for that? Two bites into Chalawan’s cucumber salad (of all things!) with its building, radiant heat and intriguingly complex flavour profile is when I decided to tuck my notes away. A spoonful of seared scallop with foamy tom kha broth, poppy pomegranate and fresh radish later, I begrudgingly picked them up again. All of Melbourne deserves to know about this place, Alice. You can’t be getting shellfish and keeping it to yourself! Speaking of keeping, I do hope the ox tongue special stays on the menu – twice-cooked chunks, crispy yet tender, freshened up with coconut cabbage remoulade. This is new-school Thai from a chef who’s comfortable and willing to have a play. There’s also traceability of its produce: pork, chicken, beef – even duck, served with red curry sauce and pops of lychee; it makes a difference. The cocktail list is intriguing and extensive, making this the sort of place to hit up with friends, so you too can wrestle with the dilemma of who to tell about it. ● aliceinframes@theweeklyreview.com.au

The kitchen, run by Matt Barlow (Two Birds One Stone, Cecconi’s), preserves fruit and vegetables and even cultures yoghurt. Brunches might include butterscotch banana waffles, and the latest lunch offering is rare yellow-fin tuna with slow-roasted tomatoes and crumbed egg. The as-sustainable-as-possible ethos at this light-filled cafe by Danny and Sian Colls (Cafe Racer, Silo by Joost) has a cult following. Twenty-four local and international producers will showcase their gin with inspired cocktails at Juniperlooza, Australia’s first gin festival. Now in its second year, the event at Federation Wharf’s Riverland and Pilgrim bars will run over two days on November 19-20. Experts from gin producers – including Adelaide Hills Distillery, Four Pillars, Rogue Society and the West Winds – will offer Talk + Taste sessions, revealing how their gins are made, the stories behind their success with the juniper berry and how gin is best enjoyed. eep calm and Carry On Camping Camping, the British Film Festival is back. Over three weeks, Palace Cinemas will present a shedload of tantalising Australian premieres alongside vintage offerings. While other film festivals offer a glimpse into very different worlds, festival director Kim Petalas says this one is more about celebrating commonality. “Australians have such a strong affinity with British culture and we have the same sensibilities. It’s great to be able to showcase that,” Kim says. Now in its fourth year (and the second sponsored by BBC First), the festival has established itself as one of the calendar’s big hitters. Timing helps, Kim says. Because the festival is positioned between the Toronto and London film festivals, he’s able to screen

There are 19 premieres on this year’s program, including the opening night film A United Kingdom, Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake and closing night feature A Monster Calls, which is expected to bring home a raft of awards following its general release in early 2017. “It’s such a wonderful film,” Kim says. “It’s original in its narrative, it’s thrilling, it’s got groundbreaking visual effects and it has such incredible heart. You’ll be hearing a lot more about it.”
The festival has proved something of a testing ground for British filmmakers, with many premieres going on to enjoy a much wider release after sell-out showings. But this year’s festival is also keeping one eye on the past, with rare screenings of classics such as Goldfinger, Goldfinger A Room With A View and Highlander Highlander. “British cinema has such a rich history,” Kim says. “We decided to showcase British heroes this year, whether they be box office champions like the Carry On series or David Bowie in his most
significant work on screen, The Man Who Fell To Earth. I’m embarrassed to admit how much I love this show. Set in the 1960s, it’s pure comfort food of the nostalgic variety. The mysteries and costume might be old-fashioned but the gentlemanly Morse is quite progressive. ●

SHE’S A LOCAL HERO BECAUSE …
n 1993, Lyn Swinburne noticed something odd in one of her breasts. “I found a strange thing, not a pea, not a thing that you think you’re looking for, but a texture that was different,” Lyn says. She was told – over the phone – that she had breast cancer. This wasn’t considered wrong at the time, it was just how it was done. Insensitivities like this happened throughout Lyn’s treatment, and she knew something had to change. “I was outraged that we were managing women so poorly,” Lyn says. “There’s no point surviving it if you come out a completely destroyed person, and that’s how it felt for me. It felt like I had no power in this at all.” In 1998 she started Breast Cancer Network Australia. She travelled throughout Australia to speak to women and hear their stories. And she wrote The Beacon magazine from her kitchen table – enlisting her young children as envelope stuffers. “The magazine was really meant to be a forum for women,” Lyn says.
“It started with my own unhappiness about the system, but then I heard the most shocking stories, shocking. And you just can’t sit by and listen to that, you can’t.” Women wanted to know everything from what to wear to surgery to how to tell their children they had cancer. Members of BCNA eventually became advisers to researchers and sat on medical boards. “It just needed that woman’s voice sitting there at the table, reminding them that this is a disease about women, not an academic, scientific interest piece – this is about real people,” Lyn says. BCNA now has more than 110,000 members. Lyn stepped down as chief executive five years ago, and is now chair of the Royal Women’s Hospital. “I’m still very passionate, I still speak very regularly to newly diagnosed women who contact me and that’s a great privilege,” she says. “Women have a real passion for making things better for the women who come after us.” ● JEMIMAH CLEGG

The promise Lumiere Tanning Boutique recently opened in the South Yarra Arcade. The salon is small and decked out with stylish furniture and the latest equipment. The experienced team ensures you come away feeling pampered and perfectly sun-kissed. The reality I’m greeted by owner Peta, who shows me through to the tanning room. I have come with my skin clean, dry and exfoliated, as recommended. Lumiere uses Moroccan Tan for a fast-developing colour, and for slower developing tans uses Tuscan Tan, as well as their own signature formula. I’m going with Moroccan Tan, as I have an event to get to. Little touches, such as a dish for jewellery, wipes to remove makeup and coat hangers for clothing, make it easy to get ready. Peta knocks on the door, enters and starts the tanning machine. I never quite know how to stand or move when I’m getting a spray tan but Peta guides me through the poses, making sure not to miss any spots. I put on my loose clothing and Peta
suggests waiting two hours before I shower. My tan will last up to 10 days if I moisturise. The pay-off After my shower, I notice I’m a beautiful shade of bronze. Overnight it develops a bit further to a slightly deeper colour. Fake tans sometimes have a rather intense smell but this one is really quite pleasant. The pain factor Standing in front of someone mostly undressed is always a little uncomfortable but Peta chats away and I’m soon distracted. Who should try it? Anyone who feels the urge for a safe, natural-looking tan. The bill? $40 for a full body tan, which takes about 20 minutes.
WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?
Absolutely. It’s always nice to get a bit of colour while staying sun-smart. ●

“The brands we’ve selected that sit well with our brand are more lifestyle, they all have something a bit special about them,” Tina says. “They’re brands that have a conscience and have integrity.”
Who’s behind the counter? Sisters Tina and Carol Barghout were looking for the right space to house their collection of high-end men’s knits in Sydney, but found that Melbourne was calling to them. “Men dress better here,” Carol says. They found the perfect spot in Prahran, and converted an old Victorian house into their concept store. “My background most recently has been in interiors,” Tina says. “Everything comes from Australia – the changerooms are made from Tasmanian spotted-gum, and we have a table that’s bluestone from Ballarat.” Carol’s background is in men’s fashion. She identified a gap in the market for stylish knitwear that was neither mass-produced nor exorbitantly priced. What’s in store? Robinson Man’s sustainable cashmere is sourced from outer Mongolia and made into high-quality, yet affordable, knitwear. The shop also stocks brands, including Dirk Bikkembergs, Massimo Alba and Aspesi.

controls are pretty basic. Some of them take a bit of finding – the on/off for the cruise control is down by the gearshift and good luck with the seat heaters. But consider the bang-for-buck ratio; this car is not terribly quiet or quick but it’s great fun. It would be a good first car for young people because it teaches them much about driving dynamics while putting a smile on their faces. The rear seat is bench-flat and room is limited, and over any distance it’s for small folk only. The cargo area is tight, although it will take a week’s shopping. Just. The underbody space-saver spare is released from inside the cargo area and the instructions for doing this are rather daunting. The literature makes a big deal of the Arkamys sound system. No, I’d never heard of Arkamys either. It started in Paris in 1998, working in movies, and now builds car systems. This one is hardly brilliant and the tone and fade controls take some finding. ●

ever, they might perform brilliantly but, seriously, drum brakes? The second thing was how far the start button is from the driver and the third was the hesitation between engaging reverse and the reversing camera kicking in. It wasn’t a great start. But things got better fast. The GT is fun to drive. It’s not powerful but it’s perky, especially in sport mode when using the gears manually. The handling is terrific. The steering is communicative for an electric system and nicely weighted. The price of great handling is a firm ride is wearing on poor surfaces. Most importantly the price is right, especially given a Polo GTi with a seven-speed auto is $2700 more. This one gets navigation and a fixed glass sunroof as standard equipment, and highly usable paddle shifts. It took me a while to get the right seat settings but, once there, it’s all very comfortable and supportive when you’re chucking it around. ●

B
efore I came to Australia I lived in Bahrain, a small island in the Middle East. I was born there in 1998. My parents had been to Australia; they loved the environment and wanted to settle here for the opportunities it would provide us. So we moved here four years ago. Our family has close links with the Jesuit education system – my parents were educated in the Jesuit tradition and my great uncle is a Jesuit archbishop in India. My parents looked at other schools in Melbourne but Xavier College really stood out. The only problem, my parents had bought a house closer to Geelong and it’s a long trip from Kew. With early morning rehearsals it seemed that I would not be able to make the daily journey. Then something amazing happened. Patrick Loftus-Hills, a former Xaverian, had just offered the Loftus-Hills Family Music Scholarship. Receiving this was wonderful. [The scholarship enabled Raoul’s family to move closer to the school.] Music is central to my mum’s family. They had a family band, a bit like The Jackson Five because there were five of them. It was called
Sugar and Spice. My mum played and taught piano. So she started to teach me at age three. When I was six, I started playing the violin after seeing Maxim Vengerov on YouTube. Initially, I started learning with a local teacher in Bahrain. However, because Bahrain is such a small place, people often leave, which meant I had six teachers in just seven years. By the time I reached 10, I had finished my eighth grade in violin and I took a bit of a break to study the saxophone. I fell in love with it as well. By the time I came to Australia, I had finished all my grades for all instruments as well as my diploma in violin. When we visited Xavier College for the first time the director of music, Mr Carey, gave us a tour of the school. The next year I started in year 9 and the mentor connection with Mr Carey started from day one. He was always available to give valuable advice and he was particularly helpful throughout my year 12 music course. I’m still deciding what I want to do when I finish school but I’d like to study medicine and continue with music. I am really interested in biomedical science at the University of Melbourne because I can also study music at the same time. ●

I
grew up on a dairy farm at Koroit in the Western District of Victoria, so I really should be a dairy farmer if family tradition was to dictate. Fortunately for me, music took hold of my imagination from an early age. When I was 10, I used to listen to my brother’s girlfriend play the piano. She was influential in my desire to study the piano. My family was not interested in music, apart from the odd guitar lesson. Initially I had to beg for piano lessons and we didn’t even own an instrument for the first 12 months. Luckily I had an extraordinary teacher
in Claire Moloney, who instilled in me the importance of excellence. From the age of 18 I started teaching four-year-olds group lessons at Parkville Music School. I really enjoyed working with others and quickly learnt that studying a piece of music for yourself essentially followed the same process when teaching someone else a new work. Naturally, I gravitated to education at the University of Melbourne after my initial degree in music performance at the Victorian College of the Arts. My first post was at the University High School as piano teacher, year level co-ordinator and instrumental music co-ordinator. I moved to Xavier College

t’s no surprise that Xavier College’s director of music, Greg Carey, and year 12 music captain and prefect Raoul D’Souza share a passion for music performance. in 1998, taking on the role as director of music, with a challenge to create a program of music education from kindergarten to year 12 across three campuses. We have – and attract – many fine musicians and Raoul is one such example. He is a wonderful musician who has always followed his passion. His talent is extraordinary and a wonderful exemplar of the Loftus-Hills Family Music Scholarship. I have fond recollections of meeting Raoul and his parents five years ago. Two things really impressed me about Raoul. One was when we entered the chapel, he showed such sincere respect of his surroundings. The second was when I asked him to play something on a beginner
violin. Raoul performed some Bach and it was amazing. Today, music at Xavier is thriving. In a normal week at Xavier, 900 instrumental lessons are conducted and taught by our staff of 60 specialist instrumental teachers. We offer 64 music ensembles, covering all genres of music. Our ensembles feature regularly at music festivals throughout Victoria and this year the Symphony Orchestra took part in the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival in Vienna. They started a family while living at Marshmead and moved to Melbourne last year when Daniel took on his current role at MLC in Kew. Although he no longer lives there, Daniel travels back to Marshmead twice a year to help out on parent visiting weekends. “It’s really nice to go back after I spent such a significant period of time there, to be able
to go back and see how the place and the program is evolving in a really nice way. He also loves to see how the students have progressed inside and outside of Marshmead. “The majority of the students find it an incredibly powerful experience.” Daniel says. “It’s that life experience – the sense of independent achievement. My favourite part would be the sense of independence and the freedom to be yourself. The environment is very different to the one at MLC, things are a lot more laid-back, giving you the freedom to be yourself. here are many rites of passage students take during their time at secondary school. At MLC, year 9 girls take a step in their journey to adulthood by spending a term at the school’s remote Marshmead campus. It’s here, on the 114-hectare farm in East Gippsland’s Croajingolong National Park, that they learn about living sustainably and also about themselves. This unique experience is something students at MLC have been offered for the 25 years – since the school opened its Marshmead campus in 1991. MLC’s director of education outdoors, Daniel Short, says year 9 students spend eight weeks working and learning outside the conventional classroom. They learn life skills through working on the farm and sharing a house with other students, away from the support of friends and family at home. “Marshmead provides them an opportunity to disconnect from technology and from pressures that they may be facing in a normal day in their life in Melbourne,” Daniel says. The Marshmead property is off the grid. Solar power and collected rainwater run the farm and student houses – students can then measure the production and consumption of power and water each day. The lessons are used to encourage the girls to take this environmentally sustainable behaviour back to their lives in Melbourne. Daniel says Marshmead not only teaches environmental sustainability, but sustainability on a personal and community level also. “What we say at Marshmead is you need to have personal well-being, the well-being of the community that you are part of and the environment that you are in … because these are all keys to navigating life,” he says. While many students relish the idea of living independently, there are challenges each of them face, including being away from home. “It’s a challenge to move away from their friends and family for two months at a time,” Daniel says. “The staff at Marshmead are trained to support students through homesickness so they’re well looked after.” Girls also get the chance for a catch-up with their loved ones on the parent visiting weekend. Families come to Marshmead four weeks into the students’ two-month experience so they can reconnect and share their experience so far. For some, it’s not just the disconnection from family that proves to be a challenge, but also from technology. At Marshmead the year 9s communicate by writing letters rather than text messages or emails to family. There’s also the challenge of living in a shared house with six or seven other students. “We explain to them the stages of group development and that there are challenges associated with this development,” Daniel says. “Staff at Marshmead give the students strategies to deal with the challenges that

imon Blacher’s home is a roomy and light-filled house in central Elwood. He has lived in the beachside suburb for the past 10 years and moved into his Scandinavian-inspired house eight months ago. The creator of Vietnamese hot spots Hanoi Hannah, Saigon Sally and Tokyo Tina and his wife had been living up the street for nine years. They saw their current home was passed in at auction and “we bought it the following week”. The Tasmanian oak cathedral ceilings and the bar and fireplace came with the house, which Simon describes as “very social”. “The previous owner entertained a lot and we’ve carried on the tradition. The living area and fireplace is a focal point and the garden is a plus. We think the Moreton Bay fig tree is around 150 years old.” Simon developed a taste for south-east Asian cuisine as he travelled extensively through the region when he was 19 and 20. He’s also part-owner of St Hotel in St Kilda and four years ago “we decided to open a Vietnamese noodle shop because we were sick of driving to Punt Road from this side of town. I got into Japanese whisky two years ago. I don’t like the peatiness of Irish and Scottish whiskies but Japanese whiskies are crisper. A favourite is the Ichiro’s Malt – a 15-year-old single malt. It’s super-smooth and is very drinkable. We have about 40 Japanese whiskies at Tokyo Tina.
SUSPENDED FIREPLACE This is part of the reason we bought the house. It’s beautiful and functional and fits in with the Scandinavian feel of the place. We use it a lot in winter. I love the sound of wood burning, and the smell of smoke is beautiful. I’d rather watch the fire than the TV.

H
arleston Firs is a grand dame in Malvern East’s Gascoigne Estate. Perhaps the grandest of them all. Yet, despite its heritage, it’s made for modern living with contemporary spaces and fine finishes. There’s more modern history, too: if, while inspecting the property, you feel the earth move under your feet, it might just be because this is where rock legend Beeb Birtles, songwriter and guitarist of the Little River Band, practised his chords. Birtles and his family rescued the dilapidated building more than 30 years ago, and did a big renovation that included the addition of a music room. The vendors also renovated and extended the house, adding a contemporary kitchen and living area, cellar and fifth bedroom in 2004. With five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a billiards room, music room, powder room, formal and informal living rooms, two staircases and a wealth of period detail, it is one of the iconic houses in this famous estate. Externally, the house is a mixture of Victorian, Edwardian and art nouveau styles. The slate roof is Victorian, but the terracotta roof capping and timber fretwork above the verandah are Edwardian. Ironwork on the verandah’s balustrade is a delicate example of art nouveau design. The period details extend to art nouveau cornicing and stained-glass windows in the formal rooms. Baltic pine floors gleam underfoot. There are several open fireplaces and marble mantelpieces. Formal rooms at the front are off a large entry foyer. They include the lounge room with a blue-tiled fireplace and marble mantelpiece. The lounge room connects to the formal dining room. French doors lead from here to the garden. One of the most spectacular rooms is the billiards room, which is downstairs, next to the informal living area. This and other entertainment rooms were built in 1923. Timber panelling to shoulder height, elaborate arched timber fretwork and a curved brick and tiled open fireplace with arched opening are classic ’20s. Leadlight windows framed
by dark-painted timber, wall lights, a massive timber ceiling and rich Persian-style carpet add to the clubby atmosphere. The contemporary family area, separated from the billiards room by timber bifold doors, recreates the art nouveau style of the front of the house in a bay window with a view to the back garden and swimming pool. Harleston Firs’s history is well documented. From grand home to boarding house, private hotel and rundown hostel to a new life as a family home once more, it has survived several waves of development. The imposing red-brick double-storey house was built in 1905 on the corner of Manning Road and Turner Street on a much larger parcel of land. Its original block was subdivided in 1964. Between 1979 and 1981 the house was a hospital and a boarding house. Its massive rooms were divided into a warren of smaller rooms, about 26 in all. It became a place for the down and out. When the boarders moved out, the vandals moved in and stripped out many of the internal fittings. The house became an eyesore. Just as demolition was on the cards, it was sold again in the early 1980s. New owners Beeb Birtles and his family set about restoring the house to its former glory. The music room was a priority. Beneath its high timber ceilings with exposed trusses, this room is a mirror of the billiards room downstairs. They restored the magnificent timber staircase, which had suffered at the hands of vandals, installed a new kitchen and bathroom and brought the place up to 1980s standards. In the most recent renovations, the second staircase was replaced, a previous fifth bedroom became a new bathroom, the old laundry became the powder room and the old family room became the kitchen with top-of-the-range Miele appliances. The three-level house is an alluring mixture of elegance and modesty, with sensible proportions.
