EDITOR’S DESK There was much excitement in the office as we put together this week’s cover story. Of all the personalities, actors, musicians and sport stars we’ve featured so far this year, none has generated quite the same level of interest around here as Boy George. Thirty-five years after he first tore up the charts with Culture Club, George is enjoying a second wind as a judge on Channel Nine’s The Voice. As well as re-igniting his own star, his turn in the red judge’s chair (not to mention his ongoing friction with fellow judge Seal) has injected new life into the show, with viewer numbers routinely nudging two million. Read Peter Wilmoth’s compelling interview with the older, wiser pop icon inside. Also making a splash on our small screens is The Chaser’s Craig Reucassel, whose new ABC TV series declares War on Waste. We took him out for coffee to find out why he filled a tram with takeaway coffee cups. ●

he teenage George O’Dowd growing up in London would not have believed that the 55-year-old artist who became Boy George is still in show business. “I was from Woolwich,” he says. “People from Woolwich didn’t become famous. I went for careers advice at school and I’d say, ‘I want to work in fashion or be a makeup artist or work with bands’ and they’d look at you like you were insane. ‘Maybe you should be a bit more realistic – factory work’.” But as “the pink sheep” of his working-class Irish family, George wasn’t cut out for regular work. “I knew I wasn’t going to do a nine-to-five job,” he says. “My father had his own building firm, all my brothers worked for my dad, they went straight from school and I was like, ‘No way am I doing that’.” George has four brothers and one sister. “They all went into painting and decorating. I preferred to paint and decorate myself.” It’s Sunday night and I’m with Boy George at Fox Studios in Sydney where The Voice is filmed. He has joined Seal, Delta Goodrem and Kelly Rowland as a judge on the top-rating talent show. After a long shoot, he’s energetic and happy to talk about his extremely colourful life. The new George has sworn off all his vices and now bakes his own gluten-free bread. He consumes no sugar, alcohol or cigarettes. “No smoke or drink for nine years,” he says, “and I do yoga every day, which I love.” Slightly chunkier in middle age but still with a mischievous sparkle in those famous green eyes, George is a different man from the androgynous, be-ribboned superstar who burst onto the scene in 1982 with Culture Club’s Kissing To Be Clever album and smash single Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? Me?. That breakout song reached No.1 in 16 countries and launched him as a pop-culture phenomenon, an ’80s gender-bending icon, drawing attention not just for the catchy tunes and soulful voice but also for his joyful embrace of being different. But the fame and fun was tempered with some dark years, including heroin addiction and some highly publicised jail time in 2009 for falsely imprisoning a male escort. Eight years later, George is in a great place. “There have been many times when I’ve crawled back from the abyss,” he says. “I’ve had troubles in my past. Music’s been the only thing that’s been constant. I’m very lucky I’ve always had music to turn to. Joni Mitchell says there’s comfort in melancholy when there’s no need to explain.” With the new healthy life comes a new outlook. “I invest in joy now, which is something I would have thought was quite weird when I was younger: ‘What do you mean you can be happy?’. It used to be if something good happened, you were happy, something bad happened, you were miserable. I kind of didn’t know about the space in between.” He talks about getting back together recently with Culture Club and how everything’s easier now. “Growing up is allowing people to be who they are,” he says. “When you’re young, you’re always trying to force your will on everybody. As you get older, you think, ‘I don’t need to make what I do unpleasant’. “There are times when I slouch and I have to say, ‘Right, no, pull yourself together, be professional’. It wasn’t something I could do when I was 19. If I was in a bad mood, everybody got it.” He has even secured a role as the face of fragrance giant Dior Homme. “I’ve become a supermodel in my 50s. It’s very exciting. I said to my manager, ‘Why don’t you get me some modelling work?’ and he said, ‘I think you should forget about that’. I said, ‘Why not? I could model watches’. As a joke. Three weeks later he rang. ‘You remember you mentioned modeling. Shall we start at the top? Dior’. Genius!

David Bowie
Bowie was an incredible lyricist. He created this ethereal, alternative landscape. I saw Bowie when I was 11 in 1973. I don’t know how I managed to get my father to let me go to the concert, but I did. And it was a life-changing moment for me. Bowie was singing about things nobody else was singing about. This was the time of Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep, Knock Three Times on The Ceiling If You Want Me, and Bowie was singing about “his nebulous body swayed above, his tongue swollen with devil’s love”. What is this man talking about? ●

I
n early 1980s London, George was known around the clubs as a style guru and a “face” – a highly marketable one at that. He brilliantly married music, fashion, nightclub sass and that lovely voice, and waited for his break. And waited. “When I started Culture Club, every single person I knew had a record deal and we couldn’t get one. I think people saw me and thought, ‘He’s so extreme’. “[Drummer] Jon Moss would go to record companies with pictures of the band and they would all say, ‘What’s the girl called?’ and he’d say, ‘It’s not a girl’. Hence me calling myself Boy George. It plays around with the idea of ambiguity.” Growing up, he loved a bit of everything, from the glam of Bowie and Marc Bolan to the intensely private revelatory poetry of Joni Mitchell. “I grew up in the ’70s, which was such a colourful, eclectic, bonkers period for music: glam rock, reggae, punk, electro, and in the ’80s, which was born of all of those things,” he says. “I am the sum of all the things I grew up with.” George is enjoying his time on The Voice but says it can be tough to let people go. “But I tell them your career is shaped by how you use the disappointments and the successes.” His contretemps with veteran Voice judge Seal might be real or might be a fun part of the “tension” of the show. “We have very different characters,” he says. “But I have a lot of respect for him as an artist and he’s a great singer.” George still lives in London but spends a lot of time in Los Angeles. He has “half an album” recorded with Culture Club and they have written songs for the rest of it.
“But I might end up doing my own album first,” he says. He plans to tour Australia later this year as a solo act. He was saddened at the loss last year of his childhood hero, David Bowie. “I knew Bowie wasn’t well, so I was kind of preparing for some bad news,” he says. “We were communicating up until 2002, when he first got ill. When he stopped responding, I knew something was wrong. I saw a recent documentary and got quite upset because I realised, ‘That’s what happened’. “I have always been the biggest Bowie fan on Earth. Losing Bowie was kind of like losing a family member. All of my generation, all of my friends, the one thing we all have in common is that we are Bowie kids. He was like our father, so weird.” George’s fame now is, of course, less hysterical than it once was. “It was a nightmare,” he says of being in the eye of the celebrity storm. “I saw a photo of Justin Bieber sitting outside a restaurant (while a group of young fans watched him eat). Even now, if I were to sit outside a burger bar with this outfit on I wouldn’t get any peace. But in my civvies I can slip by unnoticed. I do that most of the time. I’m not Justin Bieber, I’m not 19, it’s not my moment. “I’ve changed my relationship with fame. I love being in the world. Yes, I love being Boy George, I love all the things that come with being Boy George but I also like to go out and have a cup of coffee or walk in the park. “The worst is when you’re in a restaurant and someone sends their child who’s five and they don’t know who you are. ‘Hello, my dad wants an autograph’. I say, ‘Who do you think I am? Mickey Mouse?’.” ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au
Joni Mitchell
(FRANCIS SPECKER \ CBS VIA GETTY IMAGES)
“I’m Buddhist and I do actually believe that if you put things out there you do get them back. If you really want something and you put it out there, sometimes it does weirdly turn up.”
Adele
Joni Mitchell is a poet. I’ve met her a few times. She’s nothing like you think she is. She’s tough. Oh my god, she’s fierce. I met her in LA at a brunch in the Four Seasons hotel. She blew my mind. She was kind of bitchy. She said the only good singer was Billie Holiday and everyone else was rubbish. It’s always interesting when you meet people and they are not what you think. ●
It feels like there are different rules for Adele. Adele can make music like people did in the ’70s and ’80s but nobody else is allowed to. Everyone else has to be a formula, but Adele can make an acoustic album or put a piano on a record. If anyone else did that people would say, “That’s so old fashioned”. It’s one rule for her and one rule for the rest of us. ●
Getting Culture Club back together Culture Club (clockwise from top left): Boy George, Roy Hay, Mikey Craig and Jon Moss. (MICHAEL PUTLAND \ GETTY IMAGES)
Bands and artists generally only make sense when they’re onstage. Sometimes it’s hard to get tours together, all these different egos and personalities, and then there’s that two-hour window on stage when you look around and go, “I like these guys. Don’t know why I ever hated you”. ● MAY 24, 2017 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 7
A COFFEE WITH … CRAIG REUCASSEL
ABC’s The Checkout, which Craig presents with fellow Chaser member Julian Morrow. Now in its fifth year, The Checkout is a meticulously researched, labour-intensive program that has outraged some pretty big players. However, none has yet made good on a threat to sue. “You go in thinking this will be an easy story and it is always massively complex,” says Craig. “Milk – milk was a nightmare. Every time milk comes up in a meeting everyone goes, ‘Nooooo’. It’s hellish because it is not as simple as the popular perception that $1 milk is killing farmers.” But for all the work The Checkout involves, Craig still finds time for other projects. Last year, he and fellow Chaser Chris Taylor appeared in a new David Williamson play Jack of Hearts. Later this year they will be joined by Andrew Hansen in a production of Neville’s Island – an award-winning play by British dramatist Tim Firth. “There’s definitely earlier stuff I look back on and think some of it’s a bit rubbish,” Craig says. “But I’m enjoying the ride: a documentary here, a bit of a play there – the natural journey of wanting to avoid the law.” ● SARAH HARRIS sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au

raig Reucassel is momentarily caught up in the swell of matrons exiting a matinee performance of Three Little Words – an unforeseen consequence of agreeing to meet at a cafe near the Melbourne Theatre Company. The comedian, best known as a member of the satirical team The Chaser, looks remarkably shiny for someone who has spent weeks trawling through garbage for a not-so-little three-word, three-part ABC documentary of his own called War on Waste. In a stunt filmed earlier this year, Craig literally stopped Melbourne in its tracks by filling a tram with 50,000 disposable coffee cups – the number dumped in landfill in Australia every half-hour. “It is a very unglamorous topic, but it is actually quite fascinating to see how people respond to it,” says the father-of-three. It’s this ability to inform people in an entertaining way and, hopefully, where necessary, create impetus for change that has been at the heart of the 40-year-old’s “accidental television career”. Having qualified, but never practised, as a lawyer, it is issues that still fascinate him, whether it’s stirring up politicians through the various Chaser incarnations or exposing how consumers are duped and manipulated on the

Ask the wine guy I won a box of wine at a charity Q auction and like the idea of drinking for a cause. Is anyone making decent wines for charity?
A
Drinking for a cause – I love it. There are quite a few wines that direct profits to charitable organisations, and those wines tend to be well-priced and good drinking. You do have to get in quick when you see them as they are often made in small numbers. As we got to print, the Jamsheed Asylum Seeker Resource Centre wine is sold out online but still available in decent quantities at Blackhearts & Sparrows outlets. ● GOT A QUESTION? EMAIL \

This is a blend of Lagrein and Dolcetto, which would never be allowed in Italy. A dollar from every bottle goes to support the campaign for marriage equality. This is quite the marriage – blackberry and plum aromas are supported by oak and spice. ● Enjoy with \ Lamb and artichoke stew

Proceeds from this perfumed Yarra Valley syrah go towards the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. It’s made to be enjoyed right on release. There’s a high proportion of whole bunches during the fermentation process, which adds complexity with spice and a stalky, tannic grip. Available through Blackhearts & Sparrows. ●

hoot-to-thrill dining at Bang Bang with a mate is a bad idea. You’re better off bringing a clique to the former rifle club or you risk filling up before you even get to the delicious share dishes, such as pork hock pulled from the bone and stuffed into fluffy bao, or juicy chargrilled chicken with nahm jim. Which is what I ate the second time around. First time, our table of two could barely get past a plate of confit duck betel leaves and coriander-studded beef jerky, only making it as far as small shares– such as Indochine mussel bouillabaisse with loads of lemongrass and an ocean trout and banana flower salad – before we were as stuffed as the stout pork and rice sausages. Everything here is bang-bang-big on flavour, although the aim can be a little off with sweets (order black sticky rice but best avoid an oddly effervescent poached peach). A rainforest theme gives Bang Bang an oasis-like feel, courtesy of overflowing planters, tropical wallpaper and even abrasive jungle noises on the website. You could conceivably start the morning here with congee, continue with a yuzu-fuelled lunch on the deck and then return for dinner with the family. ● slevin@theweeklyreview.com.au

Fashion’s go-to coat for the fickle brink of winter is a charismatic classic, a mid-weight outer layer you can snugly belt when it’s bitter or leave open to dramatically flap when it’s not.

n the wake of Trump’s election as US President, sales of George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984 have shot through the roof. As such, a return season of this bold British adaptation seems all-too timely. A smash hit at the 2015 Melbourne Festival, the play has been reworked with an all-Australian cast by director Corey McMahon. Speaking on the eve of the national tour’s Adelaide premiere, Corey says it’s a story that feels as vital and relevant as when the novel was first published almost 70 years ago. “It’s always come and gone in terms of the place it has in our cultural conversation, as world events evolve,” he says. “Yes, it’s a book published in 1949 but it’s not a stretch at all to see how it lines up with the world we live in now.” Corey says they have resisted the temptation to tinker with the new production in order to reflect how the world has changed in the past two years – partly because there’s no need to do so, given the book’s dystopian world of austerity, perpetual war, 24-hour

surveillance, fake news and alternative facts doesn’t seem all that far-fetched. But while the content might have become depressingly familiar, Corey says the play hasn’t lost its ability to shock. A torture scene towards the end tends to draw horrified gasps from the auditorium, even if – or perhaps because – we can’t quite see what is happening.

“We don’t show the acts of violence per se,” Corey says. “We could never match whatever the audience is imagining as the gruesome horror happening onstage.” Corey admits he hadn’t read the book before he was asked to fly to Britain to help ready the play’s latest West End iteration. He isn’t alone. A recent survey found 1984 was the book that people were most
likely to fib about having read. As a result, Corey says audiences might be surprised the story isn’t quite as blackhearted as they expected. “Despite the bleakness of the story, I think Winston’s search for compassion and humanity is something we should all still reach out for.” ● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au

Podcaster Sam Loy has always been fascinated by cemeteries. Each to their own. But even if your obsessions are a little less morbid, you’ll likely find Sam a compelling storyteller. His documentary series has been likened to This American Life, but I was reminded more of John Safran’s gonzo approach to a subject. We start with an investigation into a mysterious memorial in Melbourne’s General Cemetery, which ends up opening a door on to how other cultures deal with death.
Never mind who killed Laura Palmer, the real mystery of this cult 1990s TV series is how it ever came to be a mainstream hit. It’s impossible to imagine its hypnotic blend of fantasy, soap opera and David Lynchian weirdness being broadcast on prime time today. The new run (confined to streaming service Stan) has been kept under wraps, but the right people seem to be in the right places, on and off-screen. Here’s hoping it can be as iconoclastic as it was 25 years ago.

WATCH THIS FACE CHELSEA GIBB \ SINGER & ACTOR
Chelsea Gibb has stepped into Sally Bowles’ halter top and heels, as the Kit Kat Klub of Weimar Germany is reborn in a new production of Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret.
“To survive I stayed in character.”
(JOHN MCRAE)
What’s the buzz? American director Walter Bobbie called Chelsea a “real star … sexy and funny and a dream to look at”, casting her as Roxy Hart in Chicago – The Musical when it debuted at Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1998. Last year, reviewer Simon Parris described her as “tearing up the stage” as Saraghina in the musical Nine at Melbourne Recital Centre.. In the beginning … “I was a bit awkward,” says Chelsea of growing up in Ballarat. She says she felt like an only child because her brothers, Grant and Jason, were much older. “I had a rough time in high school.” She went to boarding school, “which I hated”, when her parents moved to Maldon and bought a pub. In year 12, she played her first lead in an amateur production of the musical Rags, spurring her to study musical theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
The big break … Chelsea played Roxy Hart in Chicago for four years. “Eight shows a week, and nobody teaches you how you protect your voice,” she says. “To survive, I stayed in character. I’m an introvert. Opening nights make my heart palpitate.” Where to now? Starring as Ruby Red in Get Happy – the Musical in 2004, Chelsea met, then married, producer Warwick Renton. They live in Geelong with their children, Arielle, 12, Elliott, 10, and Luka, 3. “I’d love to do more plays, television and film,” Chelsea says. The best part about success? “Getting to play Sally Bowles, with emotions you don’t get to explore on a daily basis.” If I could do it all again … “I’d change nothing. The hard time in Chicago gave me a great perspective on what my life was going to be.” ● STEVE DOW editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au
LOOK OUT FOR … Chelsea as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, now playing at the Athenaeum Theatre (tickets: premier.ticketek.com.au) and in Melbourne later this year in Cyrens, singing Cy Coleman songs.

F I N D U S AT 316 Rathdowne Street, Carlton North bookerandco.com.au
Who’s behind the counter? Designer Karen Booker is throwing down the gauntlet to the glut of fast-fashion retailers in Melbourne by focusing on quality footwear and accessories made with timeless style. Since graduating from fashion school in Wellington, Karen has had a successful international career designing lingerie and women’s swimwear and outerwear – including a stint working on lingerie for Yves Saint Laurent, where she acquired a taste for high-end fabrics. “Working in commercial fashion made me understand what it takes to ensure mass appeal, but I intrinsically put my own personality into every piece I make,” Karen says. She began wholesaling her own creations in March 2015, and finally realised her dream of opening a permanent retail space last November. “I needed a new workshop space, and decided to incorporate that with a retail gallery. It’s worked out fabulously,” she says. What’s in store? Handmade shoes crafted from leather sourced from New Zealand, Italy and Indonesia. The extensive designing, patterning and sample-making process all takes place in Karen’s Rathdowne Street atelier.
Best foot forward: Quality is key at Booker & Co. (DANIEL POCKETT)
Once prototypes are finalised, Karen takes them to Bali to get the full range made. She says her slow fashion techniques are worth the effort. “My shoes are unique, made to last the distance and will still look fashionable in five, 10 or 15 years’ time.” Karen also stocks bespoke bags made on machines in her atelier, and sells jewellery by local artists.
Who’s buying? Booker & Co. customers are part of what Karen calls “the new fashion-conscious”, people who reject throwaway fashion. “They want longevity and uniqueness from their accessories and to wear something that celebrates interesting design.” ● BRENDAN BALE bbale@theweeklyreview.com.au

Dr Deborah Amott always plans ahead during school holidays – though not for the reasons you might expect. School holidays can be a peak period in her line of work. Dr Deborah performs surgeries including removing tonsils, adenoids (lymph nodes behind the nose in the throat), placing drainage tubes in ears and some forms of nasal surgery for blocked noses. These are the types of surgeries which are non-urgent and can be planned to fit into a time when children won’t miss much school. “It’s really common for most of the private hospitals at the end of the school term or start of the holidays to have wards full of children getting their tonsils out,” Dr Deborah says. “Parents are usually taking time off anyway for the school holidays so it’s a really good time to spend some time together and be eating lots of ice cream.” She says non-urgent operations are most common in children aged 1-6 years and in teens (from the age of 15) who can commonly have recurrent tonsillitis.
BLAKE JONES, 9, knows the value of having school holidays to heal. He spent part of the Easter break this year as a patient at Epworth Richmond’s children’s emergency and in the children’s ward. Mum Liane says Blake broke his leg in a fall on the school playground. He slipped while playing on raised stepping stones and twisted his leg suffering a spiral fracture to his medial tibia. After visiting his local GP, Blake was rushed to the Epworth Richmond Children’s Emergency where he had x-rays and surgery so his leg could be properly plastered. He was then admitted to the children’s ward and spent three days in hospital. Liane says the impact on Blake has gone beyond the pain he had to endure during his 10 weeks in plaster. He has also had to give up the sports and activities he loves, like hip-hop dancing, tennis and swimming, while he recovers. Blake has ongoing care including weekly x-rays and surgical appointments at the hospital to review his healing. Liane says being treated at Epworth Richmond has made something that could have been very upsetting for Blake a lot easier. He has become a familiar face at Epworth Richmond, with the nurses and staff taking the time to say hello. He was also invited to join in celebrations for the recent first anniversary of the children’s emergency and children’s ward. ●

The whaling and trading town of Russell was NZ’s first capital and the Treaty of Waitangi was signed just up the road from Paihia. Russell has both the country’s oldest church (Christ Church, above, which has holes in its walls from musket fire from the 1845 Battle of Kororareka) and the oldest pub (the Duke of Marlborough). ADVENTURE When it’s time for a change of pace, head out on the water. Any number of operators will take you sailing, diving or flying out at sea. Day trips leaving from Paihia take in some of the 144 islands for which the region is named and there’s more than a fair chance you’ll see dolphins, whales or orca. The Hole in the Rock (above), Motu Kokako, is a particular highlight. As long as the seas aren’t too rough, skippers will pilot their jetboats through the 18-metre opening. The time-poor can choose a helicopter flight to the island or even all the way up to Cape Reinga, taking in the white sand of Ninety Mile Beach and the Treaty House at Waitangi. The dunes (NZ’s highest) are a fine sight even if you have no desire to plunge helter-skelter to the bottom. ● topofnz.co.nz

DINE WELL
It’s very easy to eat well almost anywhere in NZ, but the far north is a veritable dinner plate for seafood lovers. Find your own shellfish on almost any beach at low tide – native tuatua, paua (abalone, above) and pipi – or buy them from a local producer. We paid $10 for a dozen of the most enormous oysters we’ve ever seen, great disc-sized lumps of gourmet goodness. A couple of days earlier, $15 bought a kilogram of steamed green-lipped mussels to eat on the balcony of a local restaurant overlooking the very water they’d grown in. Elsewhere, the region is stuffed with fruit and vegie growers with roadside stalls. There are also wineries to check out, and Kiwis are certainly no strangers to the craft beer trend. ●

Which is unfortunate, because there’s really only one way out of this – downhill, fast. Our tour group is high above Te Paki Stream, in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands. Sand-boarding down the dunes is a highlight of a visit here, as is a drive along the quicksand “road” of the shallow stream. These Kiwis like to live dangerously. I lift my toes and plunge headlong towards the stream at the bottom of the dune. Only a patch of dense vegetation saves me from a drenching. It’s hardly dignified. Fortunately for the more cautious among us, there are plenty of calmer activities to pack your days in New Zealand’s “winterless north”. It’s an area rich in history and culture, and the surroundings are easy on the eyes, too. ● CARLEY OLLEY colley@theweeklyreview.com.au

The west coast is a bit off the beaten track. Rawene, an hour away from Paihia by car, is worth a short stop to take in the pastel-coloured weatherboard buildings perched on stilts above Hokianga Harbour. Further south, deep in the Waipoua Forest, is Tane Mahuta (the king of the forest, above), a kauri tree that is 50 metres tall and thought to be 2000 years old. Maori believe it separated the earth (mother) and sky (father) to create the world. These days, Tane Mahuta has its own human guardian, a local guide who tells the tree’s stories while protecting it from visitors’ feet. There are many enormous kauri trees throughout this area, some with their own important histories. ● » hokiangatourism.org.nz MAY 24, 2017 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 23

STEM Advancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is a critical focus for Melbourne Girls Grammar. We value the importance of educating our young women in these areas and are committed to expanding and diversifying their opportunities in these fields of endeavour.
(KYLIE THOMSON)
ellie Morgan, Mlbourne Girls Grammar’s director of students for ELC and junior years, loved being a primary school student. She loved her teachers. She loved the librarian who encouraged her to read – and gave her a lifelong passion for books – and she also loved the sense of being part of her school community. Kellie loved primary school so much that even after she graduated and moved on to secondary school, she returned to volunteer at her beloved primary school at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges during her holidays. “I did that right through my schooling because I loved interacting with the younger students and watching the way their teachers nurtured them,” Kellie says. It’s this passion for early-years’ learning that Kellie has brought with her to Melbourne Girls Grammar, hoping to inspire children to love learning. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she was at primary school herself when Kellie was inspired to become a teacher. “[In year 6], I was a house captain and part of that leadership role was the privilege of being able to go and help out in other classes and so I would help out in prep classes and I just loved it,” Kellie says. “I would watch this brilliant prep teacher and think ‘I just really want to be like you’.” Kellie says it was also the students at her primary school who inspired her to follow her dream of becoming a teacher. “Having the experience of spending time in that environment was wonderful,” she says. “It was the children who inspired me the most … the magic that happens when children start to understand literacy concepts is just amazing.” Kellie now experiences that same magic at Melbourne Girls’ Grammar’s Morris Hall, where she works with staff and students from ELC to year 4. After a career working in ELCs and primary schools, Kellie joined Melbourne Girls Grammar in 2015, starting as the director of early years before moving into her current role last year. “I am so fortunate to have had a range of experiences in many different settings, but best of all, I was supported by some incredible educators,” Kellie says. “As a young teacher, I had the opportunity to learn from Jan Millikan when she returned from her first trip to Reggio Emilia.” She has taken these philosophies with her into Morris Hall which, like the Reggio Emilia approach, focuses on a student’s environment by using science, technology, engineering and mathematics as part of the early learning curriculum.
“In recent times, there’s been a real focus on STEM at Morris Hall. It is a priority and we focus on it; it’s an integral part of everything we do,” she says. “We want the children to understand their environment and their place in it and so harnessing that is really exciting.” Subjects such as mathematics and science are integrated into learning through activities such as the school’s kitchen garden. “Our kitchen garden promotes wonder and awe, where girls get to focus on discovering and exploring and creating,” Kellie says. Students can delve deeper into learning the science of the environment and sustainability through work in the garden and outdoors. They also get to become creative and problem solve with special projects using mathematics. One is the Spikey Morris project, which junior years’ girls are working on. “Spikey is our bearded dragon,” Kellie says. “Spikey’s enclosure is indoors but the girls think she should have time outside. “They have researched and designed an outdoor enclosure for Spikey and raised funds for the building materials. “The girls will consult with experts to help
build Spikey’s new enclosure in time for our spring/summer,” Kellie says. Students take a similar learning ethos with them into middle and senior years at Melbourne Girls Grammar. Part of Kellie’s role is to ensure students make a smooth transition to more senior schooling. “Transition is a really important part of what we do here,” she says. “We really try to make sure the girls feel that sense of belonging to Morris Hall (and also to the senior school). “Our prep staff spend time in the ELC and the girls come over and spend time here at the junior campus.” Parents are included in the transition process, too. They are invited to social events at Morris Hall and whole-school activities. “It’s really all about giving them ownership over their place at school and making them feel like they belong,” Kellie says. It’s something Kellie is passionate about given her own wonderful experiences at primary school. “I loved every single thing,” she says. “I can’t remember a minute that I didn’t love primary school and I want our girls to have the same experiences here.” ● MELISSA HEAGNEY melissa.heagney@theweeklyreview.com.au
3 things I have learned ● Relationships are at the heart of
all we do and quality relationships are vital for success. The girls, their parents and friends, our staff (even our neighbours) need to feel a sense of belonging.
● Little people are so capable. They
are rich with wonder and we need to trust them, respect their ideas and encourage them to explore and discover. This way, they will grow up to believe they can make a difference.
● Questions are the most powerful
tool we have. We want our girls to be the ones coming up with questions, and then being creative and bravely discovering the answers.

onda makes bold claims about the 10th-generation Civic hatch. According to the brand, this is “truly the sportiest Civic ever” and a “benchmark for the small car segment” in key areas such as safety, efficiency and driving performance. Like the sedan, the Civic hatch range spans five models ranging from the $22,390 VTi to the top-end, $33,590 VTi-LX. All models feature a reversing camera, automatic transmission and touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay as standard. Buyers keen to spice up the Civic’s looks can opt for “Black Pack” or “Orange Edition” packages that include alloy wheels, a lower body kit and coloured vinyl elements that make the car look genuinely sporty. The major omission here surrounds active driver aids such as autonomous emergency braking, which are part of a “Honda Sensing” suite available on the top VTi-LX model. Honda’s marketing material promotes “safety above all” for the Civic, but key rivals offer active driver aids, either as standard, or an option across the majority of models. Somehow, the orange stickers got approval as an option pack while lifesaving technology was left on the shelf. That said the Civic has an excellent driving

position with a wide envelope for adjustment to the seat and steering wheel that allows drivers of all sizes to get comfortable. We also like the digital driver’s display and 7-inch infotainment screen, and there’s a cavernous boot, ample legroom in the front and back, and plenty of storage. Australian Civics offer a choice of two engines, starting with a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre unit. It’s an honest if unremarkable engine that offers adequate performance
around town but and sub-par thrust on country roads. The turbocharged 1.5-litre engine in higher-grade models is a much better bet; it serves up peak torque from just 1700rpm, much sooner than its sibling. Honda’s assertion that the Civic represents a fuel efficiency benchmark is refuted by the entry-level Toyota Corolla, which matches its 6.1L/100km claim, as well as the Volkswagen Golf, Holden Astra, Ford Focus and Mazda3, which better its efforts.

This new Civic is good, not great, to drive, with an excellent ride and satisfactory control blunted by a chassis that lacks precision found in rivals such as the Ford Focus. It’s the grown-up Civic, one that trades driver engagement for everyday practicality. It’s a polished machine, worthy of a place on the small car buyer’s shopping list, but it is not the standard by which other small cars are measured. ● editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

he Sovereign 50 is designed for free-flowing family living, with five living and breakout spaces that ensure there’s always somewhere for everyone to go. The 455-square-metre double-storey home design includes four bedrooms, 4½ bathrooms and a study. Its living areas feature an expansive, light-filled open-plan family living and dining area that merges seamlessly with outdoor living. The new home is available in four sizes, from 372 to 530 square metres, and the price for the Sovereign 50 starts from $500,000, excluding site costs and landscaping. Home buyers can visit The Sovereign show home on Blackburn Road in Glen Waverley and discover how its floor plan and living features work together to create premium family living. As part of the Signature by Metricon experience, the Sovereign can also be tailored to suit all lifestyles, Metricon design manager Ricky D’Alesio says. There are a number of layout options and designer upgrades. They include a sculptural island bench, timber-lined ceiling in the outdoor room, an outdoor kitchen, and integrated entertainment technology. Ricky says Metricon homes like the Sovereign appeal to second-, third- or fourth-home buyers who are looking for a design-driven double-storey home with more architectural flair. “They love where they live but want to knock down and rebuild a modern luxury home. They often want extra space for extended family to stay and, as families get bigger and adult children live at home for longer, families need more living spaces to retreat to,” Ricky says. “The Sovereign 50 offers a lot of flexibility in living zones – there’s a formal sitting area at the front, a study, home theatre, indoor

and outdoor family living and an upstairs breakout room. There’s space for everyone to do their own thing.” He says home buyers love the flow of the Sovereign 50’s floor plan, the diversity of living spaces and its design innovations. The positioning of the grand designer kitchen, butler’s pantry and laundry with walk-in linen storage is proving particularly popular. Another highlight is a central staircase with timber treads that appear to float, set against a double-storey window wall that draws light through the centre of the house. ● LIZ McLACHLAN lmclachlan@theweeklyreview.com.au

rom model to television presenter, and more recently restaurateur, MC and corporate host, Nicky Buckley’s varied career has made hers one of Australia’s most recognised faces. The former Sale of the Century co-host has lived on the Surf Coast for 14 years with husband, model Murray Bingham (who also worked on Sale of the Century Century), their three sons Cooper, 19, Jasper, 18, and Baxter, 14, and their faithful canine Rex. “We used to holiday here and always loved it,” Nicky says. “Murray and one of my sons love surfing and I love stand-up paddle-boarding. We found this block with a shack on it and we built a holiday home there. “When the kids started school, we couldn’t come down as much as we wanted, so we decided to make the move and live here permanently. It’s a great place to bring up the kids.” The couple owned two local restaurants, Growlers in Torquay and Uber Mama in Anglesea, for several years. But lately Nicky has focused on MC and corporate hosting work around Australia. She also raises awareness for ovarian cancer, having lost her mother to the disease. ● GAIL THOMAS editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

MEDAL This is my pop’s RAAF medal wings and there’s also a little picture of my pop and grandma on it, which is very special. He was my mother’s father and I was very close to him.
REX Rex is our beautiful old border collie/ red heeler/kelpie cross. We got him when we moved here, so he is 14 now. He’s a big part of the family, very spoilt and is still fairly fit for an old dog.
GARDEN The garden is something I’ve always been passionate about – I think I got it from my pop, who also had chooks, a vegie garden and lots of fruit trees. The passionfruit is going well, and there’s strawberries, potatoes and tomatoes. It’s great when you get an abundance of produce so you can make sauces, but you have to go with the seasons.
PHOTO I really cherish this photo of my boys. It was a birthday present to myself a few years ago. I wanted to get them photographed together before they got too big to snuggle in together.
FA B E R G E E G G Murray’s mum Joanie has a collection of beautiful Faberge-style eggs that she has created and painted. She made me this gorgeous egg, which has lace from my wedding dress on it, and gave it to me at the bridal table on our wedding day.

Florals
(COURTESY LINEN HOUSE)
inter is coming; in fact, it feels like it’s already here. Shorter days and plunging temperatures mean more time cosying up on the couch and less time venturing into the outside world. The Danish concept of “hygge” (pronounced “hue-guh”) – or, roughly, cosiness – is a relatively new trend in Australia. Embracing it means there is even more reason to inject comfort and style into your interiors. After all, it’s good for your well-being. We spoke to three experts to find out the top five trends to warm up your home this winter. ● jjones@theweeklyreview.com.au
A simple and effective way to change the look of your bedroom for winter is to swap a plain-coloured bedcover for a moody printed design. Linen House textile design manager Sue Morris says florals are making a comeback, especially if they’re on a dark background. “A beautiful floral can add real drama to even a minimalist space,” she says. ●

Layering & textures If you want to be environmentally conscious this winter, and save on your electricity bills, then layering and texture will be your best friends. “Layer up warm colours and materials in your bedding and you will be bang on trend,” Julia says. To achieve this look, she recommends overlapping rugs in living rooms and adding chunky knitted throws to beds and couches. When it comes to staying warm, there’s no place you need it more than in the bedroom. Sue suggests swapping regular bedding choices for something more suitable for the season. “If you really feel the cold, nothing beats flannelette or brushed cotton in winter,” she says. “It’s so soft and cosy.” ●
LAYERING & TEXTURES
Ramp up the glamour for a luxurious winter look as maximalism eclipses minimalism. “Hollywood romance is inspired by the art deco movement,” says Brosa’s Kelly King. “Showcasing Hollywood regency shapes, the trend will feature heavy shadows, flat colour and exaggerated lines.” She says simple fixes such as wall art or a glam coffee table can help incorporate the trend into your own home’s aesthetic. “Products that are classic and reflect the trend at the same time are always best,” she says. ●

Nothing is quite as important as material choice when it comes to decorating your home for the cooler months. While linen has been popular in soft furnishings throughout summer and spring, velvet is about to get some time in the spotlight. “Faux fur, luxe velvets and rich colours will immediately turn up the heat in a room,” says Julia Green, founder and stylist at Greenhouse Interiors. Kelly King, lead buyer at online furniture shop Brosa, also suggests using welcoming velvet furnishings. “People are drawn to the texture and creating warmth with it,” she says. ●

Jewel colours There’s nothing like a change to your colour palette to make your interiors feel fresh and new. Now is the opportunity to try out warmer colours and darker shades. “Warmer palettes, both in colours and materials, have arrived just in time for this winter,” says Greenhouse Interiors’ Julia Green. “Think deep emerald greens, luxurious rich velvets, terracottas and ambers with warmer metals like brass and coppers.” Kelly agrees: “Dark colourways are here to stay.” ●

FEATURE HOUSE HAWTHORN \ 29 OAK STREET 4

U
nifying a contemporary addition and a characterfilled period house can be such a challenge that often only time will tell how well it works. The owner of Lauriston, a tuckpointed-brick, slateroofed c1904 Federation house on a 595-square-metre block on the crest of Oak Street’s hill, made a prescient comment in 2009 when its renovation by architect Paul Delany was featured in Home Beautiful magazine. “We wanted to make sure it was quality that would stand the test of time,” she said. “I know it’s going to work just as well in 10 years.” The young family has well and truly tested the design of generous spaces and stylish interior. The work involved a makeover of five rooms at the front of the house – a sitting room and four bedrooms off a central double-arched hall – and the addition of an openplan kitchen, living and dining area, plus main-bedroom en suite, study, laundry, bathroom and powder room. Continuity is a key: high ceilings throughout, pale matte American oak floors, and Carrara marble repeated in fireplace surrounds, ledges, kitchen, bathrooms and thresholds. Yet each room is individual. The neutral palette allows soft furnishings to inject personality. The bedrooms retain cast-iron fireplaces for show, with ornate timber mantels. The sitting room has elaborate cornices and a feature wall of glamorous silvery Florence Broadhurst wallpaper. The study’s floor-level picture window gives the desk-bound worker a serene outlook to a courtyard/lightwell. The living area stands apart, with a quartet of horizontal slot windows on the west wall, the gravitas of dark timberveneer joinery, and feminine sheers across stacker doors at the back. They lead to a broad deck and a north-facing garden of magnolias, pear trees, maintenance-free artificial turf and a built-in barbecue. If the backyard design is contemporary entertainer, the front garden (with a car space to one side) is an informal introduction to this period classic attributed to prolific Hawthorn builder William Langdon. With an elegant tessellated-tile verandah, turned posts, lattice-style fretwork, a niche with shelf to one side and exquisite stained glass around the front door and casement windows, its charm has been proven to only increase over time. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON property@domain.com.au

Fermanagh Road is widely appreciated as one of blue-ribbon Camberwell’s best streets, not only for its prized location near schools, transport and Camberwell junction – in a Goldilocks position, close enough to walk but far enough from the traffic – but also for being tree-lined, elevated and featuring an array of beautiful Victorian-era houses. The outstanding c1888 block-fronted example at No.25 is on an 1136-square-metre allotment, giving it privacy, garden greenery all around and potential for a pool and extension of outdoor entertainment areas. A return verandah with cast-iron lace decoration welcomes us into a warm family environment and a practical single-level floor plan. There’s a sitting room and a study at the front, four bedrooms off a central hall in the middle, a second study, then a casual living and dining area encompassing the kitchen and extending into the backyard. A zoned single-level floor plan makes this period weatherboard house a fine fit for family living. The main bedroom, with walk-in wardrobe and en suite, shares the front zone with a lounge and second bedroom, both of which have open fireplaces. Forming the core, open-plan kitchen, dining and family areas connect with a sunny internal courtyard. The rear zone adds a laundry, main bathroom, fourth bedroom and a retreat opening to the backyard, where lawn and a cubby encourage child’s play. Spotted gum floorboards, stone benchtops and Siemens appliances bolster the renovated attraction. Walk to Wattle Park, schools and transport. ● KAY KEIGHERY
This house opposite Koonung Creek Reserve comes with the coveted bonus of Balwyn High zoning. Standing tall in pale brick, it offers three levels of family-oriented spaces in an established garden. The lower level comprises a double garage, rumpus room and storeroom. Aside from a laundry and compact bathroom, the middle level is given over to living, with a huge lounge and dining room and open-plan kitchen, meals and family areas. The main bedroom and en suite share the top level with three minor bedrooms and a bathroom. As the residence is in original 1970s condition, there’s scope for new owners to update. ● KAY KEIGHERY

Where does admiration end and slack-jawed adoration take over? It could happen on any of the four levels of this sculptural new residence in a secluded cul-de-sac by an A-team of architect David Watson and landscape whiz Jack Merlo. Your highlight might be the 18-seat gold-class cinema with bar and kitchenette, near the basement gym, games room, cellar and vast garage. Maybe the grassed rooftop terrace is your entertainers’ dream. The sky-high open space catches full sun and city views and includes a kitchenette, glazed retreat and a lift to get you there. In between are two levels of opulence that meet executive and family demands with flexible spaces, bespoke style and state-of-the-art technology. There are four en-suited bedrooms on the first floor and a fifth plus home office at ground level. On an elevated block in a suburb that speaks for itself, this house is behind a well-tended front garden. The white facade is accentuated by plantation shutters and tall windows. Inside, dark timber beams feature in the living and sitting rooms, and the big windows let in plenty of natural light. At the rear, there’s a formal dining room and a sunroom with french doors to the outside. All of the bedrooms are upstairs, along with a study and two bathrooms. While it’s comfortable as it is, the house offers buyers a chance to renovate to create a dream home – or they might treat the 1330-square-metre site as a blank canvas for a new build. ● CHARLIE BRAITHWAITE
