FIRST PERSON
I am JJack Tandy … and do I have a joke for you I’ve been working as a removalist at Man With A
Van coming up to six years. I started working here as I was finishing off my uni degree and just loved it so much that I stayed. Everyone here has, how shall we say, a secret life, or an alter ego. They’re either musicians, or performers, comedians, actors, playwrights, so there’s never a dull day. I do comedy improv on the side. I don’t really sort of mine the job for material. But in this job and, one of the great things about it, is that everyone needs to move every now and then, so you do get to see a broad cross-section of society. It’s also a very physically demanding job, which I really enjoy. As long as you’ve got a good lifting partner, you can get through everything. You always get the old “you obviously wouldn’t need a gym membership”. But we do have an in-house gym regimen we do to keep us fit, absolutely. The heaviest thing I’ve ever lifted was a TV unit that was about five metres in length and made of MDF. It took four of us to lift ... it was probably in excess of 300 kilograms. Once you work here for a while, you become a minimalist pretty quickly. I hate moving. I try to put it off as much as I can. When you’re going out on the road for the first time, you’re paired up with one of the senior staff members. It’s a fairly basic job, but there are a lot of little things that you just really need to hone your skills on. Reversing a truck down a tight alley – that takes a long time to really get down. They say that moving is one of the most stressful things you can do in life. People move for all kinds of reasons. You try to match the occasion, where sometimes you’re a bit more sensitive. We also know that people aren’t always themselves on moving day. You get them at their best and you get them at their worst. One of the most interesting parts is just getting to know the customer’s story. It’s kind of a bit like talkback radio, where you can just have a chat and get their views on various subjects. I love the challenge of moving furniture. I’m also a big nerd for puzzles. A lot of people make the very standard joke that you must really be into Tetris. But yeah, I really am. ●

When Senator Penny Wong sat down with journalist Peter Barrett, and photographer Kristoffer Paulsen, in her Adelaide electorate office to share a snippet of her family life, it was unsurprising that commanding the halls of Canberra to reading bedside stories is not a stretch for this extremely busy mum; her time in public office has been characterised by power and compassion. This Mother’s Day will be the first for hers and many other families, since the marriage equality law was passed. Wong reflects on the impact of the campaign and the decision on family life, following an emotional 2017. ●

Penny Wong’s rites of passage COVER STORY \ THE SENATOR TALKS FAMILY AFTER MARRIAGE EQUALITY
A
t a time when public interest in the private lives of politicians could be at its lowest ebb, it’s a brave or reckless MP who opens up to the media about her family. But for the usually very private Senator Penny Wong, last year’s marriage equality debate gave her no choice. The openly gay mother of two found her personal life taking centre stage in a divisive public discussion that caused distress to many people in the LGBTIQ community. The record shows that Australians answered emphatically “yes” to same-sex marriage. But now, almost six months after the law was changed, Wong has been reflecting on how the battle affected her family. “It’s a cliche, isn’t it, but children change your life. In very practical ways – a whole new level of sleep deprivation,” she laughs, “but they change your life also in terms of the relative weight you give things. And I got into politics because I wanted to make change and change the world, or the country, for the better. I think having kids gives that a different emotional resonance.” We are chatting in a spartan meeting room in the Labor senator’s electoral office in central Adelaide. Like climate change, she says, marriage equality is an intergenerational issue. But when elements of the “no” campaign resorted to implying that same-sex couple families were somehow “lesser” because they didn’t contain a mother and a father, it affected her deeply. “The stakes on that were raised by the way in which the debate proceeded, in that so many of
6
T H E W E E K LY R E V I E W
those who were opposed to equality were prepared to use children as collateral damage, as collateral, in what I’ve described as the war against equality. I could accept that there were people who didn’t agree but I found it actually ethically untenable, the way in which they were prepared to use children as the basis on which they ran the argument.”
W
ong clearly hasn’t forgotten comments made by Joe Hockey on ABC’s Q&A, either. “If people really cared about kids, one would think you’d actually think about what it meant for children to hear persistently in the media that their families were somehow abnormal. Those were the messages. So, [the debate] was very important and it was important because of the principle of equality and because of people’s relationships. “People should have that choice and a loving relationship shouldn’t be discriminated against in the way that they were. But it was pretty important, I think, because of what it said to all our children about inclusion.” With her partner Sophie Allouache and their two daughters, Alexandra, 6, and Hannah, 3, Wong lives in an inner-southern suburb of Adelaide. Like most families, the couple juggles parenting and work with Sophie doing “more than the lion’s share” of the former. As Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and the Opposition spokeswoman for foreign affairs, Wong’s
schedule has her flying regularly to Canberra. To compensate, she tends to fly late on a Sunday and return early on Friday, in order to be home for family breakfast; she cooks when she can (curries and lasagne among her repertoire) and does school drop-offs, when her schedule permits. “What can you do?,” she says. “I think we still structure work on the [assumption] that there’s someone home doing primary caring responsibilities. I think that’s the reality.” Wong also loves reading to her children – currently she is flipping between the Winnie-thePooh collection and a fairy book series with Alexandra and various picture books with Hannah (favourites include There’s A Hippopotamus On Our Roof Eating Cake and A Lion In The Night Night). “Kids’ books are great – that has been a revelation; they’re so much fun. One of the best things I’ve done as a politician was I got to read at Writers’ Week, and the girls chose what I read.” As for Mother’s Day, the loose plan so far is to catch up with both her mother and Sophie’s. Meanwhile, Wong remembers dishing up badly made instant coffee and toast in bed as a child for her mum, although pancakes were preferred. Alexandra and Hannah are still a little young to carry on that tradition, she says. “We just usually have a nice breakfast. It’s usually a bit of a negotiation because Hannah loves pancakes, Xandra doesn’t like pancakes – she must be the only child in the universe who doesn’t like pancakes.”
“I wanted to make change and change the world ... for the better. I think having kids gives that a different emotional resonance.”
During the height of the marriage equality debate, says Wong, it was impossible to keep Alexandra oblivious to everything that was happening in the media. “She would ask whether people supported it or not and she wanted to go to shops that had the sign, you know, ‘This small business supports equality’. She’d say, ‘They support equality, mum, let’s go there’.” When the yes vote was announced on November 15 it brought the family great relief (not to mention Wong to tears – she’s still embarrassed about crying on national television). “[Alexandra] said, ‘We won, Ma,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, we did, darling. Isn’t it good?’ And now we just – everyone’s moved on. I think one of the changes is it doesn’t feel as much of a statement any more, does it? Sometimes you used to feel that being in public with Soph and the kids, some people used to regard it as a political statement ... but [now] it just feels like life.” Which brings us back to that central question. Why would Senator Wong – known for her methodical and excoriating intellectual take-downs of political rivals – be talking about pancakes and parenting with a journalist? “With all due respect, I didn’t get in to politics to talk about my personal life,” she begins, pausing to find the right words. “[With] the ‘yes’ vote, the country did a great thing and it meant a lot to a lot of people. And it meant a lot not just to those of us who are in samesex relationships but it meant a lot to people in the community for whom this really mattered … And it mattered a lot to parents in families like ours. It mattered a lot to us for our kids. So, I suppose I did want to express that again.” In past speeches Wong has maintained she fights for the world she wants her children to inherit. And so, whether conscious of it or not, this Mother’s Day at the Wong/Allouache household will be a special one. Because the world has changed. ●

Vodka has none of the street cred of gin but, well made, this spirit can be a clean, fresh thing of wonder. Hartshorn Distillery’s vodka, recent winner of the Best Vodka at the 2018 World Vodka Awards, is living proof of that. Hartshorn vodka has an artisan back story worthy of any gin: it’s made in limited volume in southern Tasmania by Ryan Hartshorn, whose mother and sister make award-winning sheep-milk cheese at Grandvewe Cheeses. In a world first, Ryan figured out how to make vodka from whey, a waste product of the cheese-making process. The unfiltered vodka acquires a unique, gorgeous sweetness on the nose and a subtle creamy texture in the mouth; it can be sipped straight at room temperature but also makes a cracking vodka martini. The best place to sample Hartshorn’s martini cred is at the recently opened and exuberantly decorated Natural History Bar & Grill. This cavernous New Yorkstyle steakhouse features giant dioramas filled with taxidermy beasts and birds, a David Lynch-worthy red-and-black chequered floor and a maze of booths and bar stools. It’s a place made for drinking martinis and to prove it has a lunch special every Friday: three martinis and a steak with all the trimmings for $75. The Hartshorn vodka martini is expertly chilled in the correct glassware with a twist of orange that adds a subtle note of citrus to the slightly sweet creaminess. It has the clean, elixir-of-life quality possessed of all the best martinis. ●

FOOD
All four one Dine with a group at Hanoi Hannah New Quarter, Commune Group’s first foray north since the original opened in Windsor six years ago. It takes multiple mouths to finish the sticky tamarind pork hock, which you shred from the bone and roll in rice paper with Asian herbs, lettuce, cucumber and pineapple. I had high hopes for northern-Vietnamese favourite cha ca – enjoyed overseas, chunks of turmericcoated rockling sizzle on a hot plate and scissors chop piles of dill to throw in. Here it’s a small serve of oily fish with minimal greens. Ditch chopsticks to dig into deep-fried fish wings or charred beef rib with chilli “crack salt”. Dessert is Saigon Sally reincarnate – the tiri-mi-sally ice-cream sandwich from the now-closed restaurant. Staff pull up a seat to take orders and deliver extra food when the kitchen slips up – gaffes are handled with grace and add personality. Suspended rattan cabinetry snakes along the ceiling above a monochrome mural of Hanoi’s bustling Old Quarter – a nod to the contagious atmosphere that New Quarter is creating in Richmond. ● Hanoi Hannah New Quarter ● 79-83 Swan Street, Richmond

MUM’S THE WORD FOR TOP CHEFS’ MENU INSPIRATION
I
t all has to begin somewhere. Peering over the counter tops, licking the bowl and eventually being promoted to assistant egg cracker. It’s the place where a connection to food is born. The maternal figures of our childhood shape our introductions to food and, in our loyal eyes, are the experts of their own cuisine. But for those who turn cooking into a career, does mum’s food still take the cake?

For Guy Grossi, it’s the smell of olive oil, onion and garlic that brings him back home. That, and a taste of his mum’s signature calamari ragu. “But I add a little turmeric and cumin when I make it; it’s used as a seasoning and adds a little lift,” Grossi adds quietly, his mum’s nearby, “but, I’d never tell her.” Grossi started learning young from his mum, Marisa Grossi. At six years old, he was cleaning beans, while getting a glimpse of his dad’s chef work on holidays and weekends. “Eventually it gets under your skin. We discuss food all the time, when we’re eating lunch, we’re discussing dinner.” But unlike the bright lights and heat of a restaurant, Marisa’s kitchen was the nurturing heart of the home. “The first spot you’d go to find her was the kitchen. She’d either be braising, cooking or making fresh pasta. And it was always generous, in nature and spirit.” In the same essence, Grossi’s Cellar Bar makes a bountiful
140 litres of bolognese each week, just the way his mum does. Marisa laid down firm sauce foundations from the beginning. “Mum taught me to always take enough time to sweat the onions properly, otherwise you don’t get the lovely sugars caramelising in the sauce.” So, if you smell onions sweating down next to Cellar Bar, it’s because Guy’s mum taught him so.
“The first spot you’ d go to find her was the kitchen. She’ d either be braising, cooking or making fresh pasta. And it was always generous, in nature and spirit.” - GUY GROSSI
Thi Le “Mum always says you should be feeding people like you’re feeding soldiers,” says chef Thi Le of Anchovy, “with lots of food that is nourishing and comforting.” And true to her word, when her mum, Hieu Le, is down from Sydney, you’ll find her in the kitchen cooking the staff meal for the whole Anchovy team. From making her trademark wraps packed with herbs, a bulk batch of pork-stuffed bitter melon soup, to preserving watermelon skin. When Hieu cooks, nothing goes to waste. Thi Le recounts her mum’s instinctive nose-to-tail approach to food and her frugal pickling habits, “and now all of a sudden everyone is preserving, mum was doing this for so many years and I just thought she was crazy”. Le arrived in Australia with her Vietnamese mother at two years old, after emigrating from Malaysia. “My ethos is how my mum likes to eat, and how we grew up eating. Most of the dishes at Anchovy are that, just reinterpreted.” It is this same maternal approach to sharing food that led Thi to cooking professionally. “Grandmas and mums, they’re just

feeders. They just want to share. They get really excited about cooking something very simple and delicious. This is the reason the food at Anchovy is nurturing; there’s no tricks.” Just the way mum likes it. CONTINUES » P14

Michael James From helping bake the Cornish pasties that once lined his grandma’s ironing board in the kitchen, Michael James of Tivoli Road Bakery has come full circle. Leaving Cornwall at 18 to work as a chef in London, Michael returned to baking when he moved to Sydney with his wife and co-owner Pippa. The Cornish classic is now available on Fridays in their busy South Yarra bakery. “In the heyday, we’d make pasties once a week and everything was done by hand,” says James. Sticking closely to the recipe, they use lard and beef fat for the pastry, beef skirt, potatoes, onions and swede. Alongside the pasty are Cornish saffron buns. “My grandma would make them and if not in bun form, they’d be a cake, and we’d have them as an after-dinner snack, toasted with butter,” James says. Like the nostalgic pastie, they’re also sold at Tivoli Road Bakery. Since James’s mum passing in 2010, and living far from his family in Cornwall, the essence of his childhood lives in the cabinets and on the shelves of his family-owned bakery.
Michael James of Tivoli Road Bakery, left. Charlie Carrington and his mum, Jacquie, right.
“In the heyday, we’ d make pasties once a week and everything was done by hand.” - MICHAEL JAMES
Charlie Carrington It makes sense that Peking duck was a revelation of cooking for Charlie Carrington, chef and owner of Atlas Dining, a restaurant with a revolving international menu. He was 10 when his mum Jacquie brought home all the ingredients to make the meal. “Honestly, mum will admit she’s a pretty average cook – there are some of the ‘Aussie-mum staples’ that she nails and always has, but I think she will admit that it’s better when I cook the family dinner.” Although what Jacquie lacks in culinary finesse, she makes up for in steadfast support and encouragement. “At the age of 15 when your mum helps you write an email to request work experience at a three-Michelin-starred restaurant in the UK and you get it, well, the rest is history,” he says.
‘‘It takes something special to look at a student and see who they can become, and at St Michael’s, we strive to achieve this in and outside the classroom every day.’’ Mr Jim Garas, Old Michaelian (1985), Teacher Start your St Michael’s journey. Applications now open for 2020.

Rosa Mitchell “Voiu un caffè?,â€? Rosa Mitchell gently asks her mum in her restaurant Rosa’s Canteen. Maria replies with a nod and shortly espresso cups arrive filled with percolator coffee, true Italian style. While Rosa and Maria are both stirring in a teaspoon of sugar, Rosa explains they have just spent four days making passata together. Both sipping almost in unison, she adds, “luckily we’ve written recipes down over the years, especially the salami, because she’s never measured a recipe in her lifeâ€?. Mitchell was seven when her family arrived in Australia in 1962 from Sicily. Just two years before she started cooking the family meals. “Mum and dad had to work, so I would cook, and because I cooked with my grandma so often it was intuitive.â€? Even though she admits all her aunties have slightly difference recipes, she uses her mum’s in her restaurant. “I always tell customers it’s my mum’s recipe, especially the cauliflower fritters. No matter where we go, or where we cook it, or who I give the recipe to, people love it and that’s a fact.â€?

Colin Mainds When Colin Mainds, head chef at Cumulus Up, is in need of inspiration, he calls his mum Doreen in Scotland. “If I’m at a stumbling point, like making this menu, it’s, ‘Mum, I’ve got these fantastic berries: what will I do?’. The answer has resulted in a sell-out dessert, every night. Known in Scotland as the cranachan, Mainds has named it mixed-berry sundae. Doreen now runs
her own confectionery business, making Scottish tablet (a variation of fudge), which is also a component in the sundae’s crumb. Pasta is another dish from home. “She keeps it simple with a little butter, garlic and heaps of parmesan. Mainds also serves his garganelli with a butter sauce and parmesan. Although he has added fine-dining flair, Doreen’s advice remains. “Mum always said to me, ‘Don’t get frustrated and keep a cool head’.

A day Far from Paris but perfectly at home in Adelaide, the blockbuster Colours of Impressionism show is a great excuse to visit the Art Gallery of South Australia. The new show features 65 masterpieces on loan from Musee d’Orsay until July 29. These colourful paintings reach across the centuries and represent one of the most popular and influential artistic movements. As the only place in Australia to host the show, the gallery has pulled off a coup with these top-notch works by Monet, Cezanne, Pissarro and others. Interestingly, the paintings are on display in the Elder Wing (a brave move replacing its classic Australian works). The show is organised through the use of colour, creating a fascinating understanding of the artists. Lunch at the gallery’s AGF + W cafe is recommended as is a stroll along the Adelaide riverbank. Finish off with an early dinner at the top-rated Peel Street restaurant. ADAM BRUZZONE

Strike out to the Barossa Valley, a short 1.5-hour drive from Adelaide. Yalumba, the oldest familyowned winery in Australia, has a busy cooperage on site where one-third of its wine barrels are made. A tour of the cellars is a fascinating stroll through the history of Yalumba. Afterwards sample a tasting at the Wine Room, consider a picnic in the grounds or book into Vintners Bar and Grill in Angaston for a fine-dining lunch. ADVICE
How to ask for a pay rise
A
sking for a raise can be one of the scariest things you can do at work, but it doesn’t have to be. We’ve asked three experts for their advice on how best to back yourself. Wendy Syfret, is the head of at Vice Media Australia and is passionate about demystifying the pay-rise process. Before you start the conversation, she stresses, it’s important to work out what you think you are worth in the first place. “I figure the world is going to put a price tag on you, so you may as well beat them to it.” She notes that employers are investing not just in your current role, but your potential. “As long as you’re working hard, and always trying to grow in your job, you should always see yourself as their professional investment.”

Claire Hooper, host of ABC financial literacy podcast The Pineapple Project, says that valuing yourself highly can send a positive message to your employer. “If you can confidently quote a large number, sometimes people will find it reassuring that you believe you’re worth that much.” So, how do you build your case for earning more money? Syfret recommends writing a position description for the role you’re currently doing, then comparing it to what you were originally hired for. Chances are you’re doing things that require a more complex skill-set. “You will probably see a lot of variations, which can build the spine of your case.”

Carly Jacobs, co-host of the self-improvement podcast Straight and Curly, agrees that documentation is key. She notes that managers want proof that their investment will bring a return. “If you can show them you’re a good investment, there’s no need to worry about asking for more money.” And if your request for money doesn’t work out? There could be unexpected benefits. Just by proposing to have the conversation, you’ve brought yourself to the attention of higher-ups, who might think of you when other opportunities at work arise. “You’ve gone in; you’ve shown that you are certain about your own value to the company, and that you’re interested in more,” Hooper notes. “You’ve said so much about your attitude towards your own work by asking for one [pay rise].” Jacobs says that you should feel comfortable asking why the request was rejected.

“Ask your manager for a detailed reason that the pay rise was knocked back.” There may be external reasons: a company-wide salary freeze, for example. “It’s also important to phrase your questions as solutions. ‘Why didn’t I get a pay rise?’ is a confrontational way of getting information. A better way to ask would be ‘Can you give some advice on how to improve so my next pay rise is accepted?’.” Why can talking about money be so awkward? Hooper notes that, culturally, we’ve been taught that it’s a bit impolite to talk about money. She says confidence is the key. “We should really back ourselves more.” Whatever the outcome of the discussion, Syfret notes that we should stop thinking that it’s somehow wrong to ask your boss for more money. “I always remind myself that people in positions of power speak about money all the time. This is natural for them.” ●

Mindset over matter
W
hen it comes to losing weight and sticking to a healthy routine, it’s not just physical strength that we rely on. We need mental strength and a positive mindset to not only get us through our workout but push ourselves to the limit. Without a strong mind, getting those burpees done, weights lifted and workouts ticked off can feel like a battle. After all, the mind can be your best friend or your biggest enemy. Time and time again I’ve sat down with clients who have been focusing too much on the physical, so we change tack. This is always a success because when your mind is in the right place, your body will follow. Take a look at my quick steps to give your mindset a makeover. DITCH THE “ALL-OR-NOTHING” MENTALITY \ Too
often, we fall into a trap of either giving 110 per cent
or no effort at all. This type of thinking is dangerous as it means when we’re not totally committed to a good routine we tend to throw any healthy habits completely out the window. Try to ditch this way of thinking and instead adopt a balanced approach that doesn’t make anything completely off bounds. IT’S A MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT \ Don’t have an end date to your healthy routine. Think about eating well and working out consistently as a lifestyle change and let go of any diet mentality you might have. Dropping this type of thinking will mean change is likely to stick around in the long run. RETHINK REWARDS (AND PUNISHMENTS) \ Try to ditch the idea of food as a reward and exercise as punishment. This way of thinking will make you dread working out and, on the flip side, if you’re

REFLECT ON HOW FAR YOU’VE COME \ Allocate the same amount of energy that you usually do to feeling dejected about what you haven’t achieved, to
instead feel good about how far you’ve come. I am always reminding my clients not to forget to be kind to themselves, and never critique or say anything to yourself that you wouldn’t say to a friend. Changing your mindset is not easy. We can’t just flick a switch and immediately have a positive mindset. The reality is, there will always be days where we crave a Big Mac or watch an extra Netflix episode instead of going for a run, and this is absolutely OK. But if you can focus on taking the above steps into account and gradually make small changes, trust me, they’ll lead to big results. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

ANTHONY KIRLEY
GREG BRIGGS
SPECIAL PROMOTION
F
or the past 37 years, Anthony Kirley has been working in education, shaping the academic minds of young students and encouraging them to be compassionate, follow their dreams and share knowledge. His own passion for education and strong spiritual faith started as a young student in Albury. Kirley attended Catholic primary schools, St Anne’s and St Patrick’s, where he first decided he wanted to be a teacher. “I always wanted to be teacher – I had great respect for those who taught me,” Kirley explains. “I wished to have a positive influence on students, to be able to motivate them, share my enthusiasm for subject content with them and shape their learning.” Kirley says he loved being a student, relishing the time he had to study his favourite subjects and play cricket and football with his classmates. “My best memories are of having the opportunity to study subjects I really enjoyed, especially mathematics,” he says. “Opportunities for sport and other activities such as camps and retreats were also some of the great memories I have.” Kirley joined Whitefriars College as principal at the start of the year, bringing his wealth of experience to the school. He moved from Kolbe Catholic College in Greenvale Lakes where he was principal (the school’s first) from 2007. It was here and at previous Catholic schools he worked at that Kirley refined his educational philosophy. “It’s about integrating faith with the culture and life of a developing young person, with priority given to fostering each person’s best expression of self, and being compassionate and encouraging,” he says. “To guide all to acquire skills, learn concepts, and make judgments, through a curriculum that is modern, varied and visionary. To promote student enjoyment of learning and excellence in learning.” Kirley’s previous work at an all-boys school in Melbourne, St Joseph’s, was one of the many reasons he applied for the role at Whitefriars – as was the school’s excellent reputation. “I have known for many years of the community’s high regard for Whitefriars College, through various associations and my work in Catholic education,” Kirley says.
A N T H O N Y KI R L E Y
“I also recognised that formation in leadership is a lifetime pursuit and believe I have the selfdiscipline and the capacity to continue to develop and harness skills in a new setting; ready for change and diverse responsibilities at Whitefriars.” Kirley says what he loves most about working in all-boys education is seeing the school (and students) balance academic and extra-curricular activities each day as he did as a student. “It’s having a balanced focus on academic and extra-curricular activities, carefully planned and implemented in the ways boys learn best,” Kirley says. “The loyalty and trust boys have helps them learn the importance of strong bonds of friendship, teamwork and social interaction,” he says. There have been many rewards starting at Whitefriars but equally, Kirley says, he has found challenges in his new role as principal. “The biggest challenge is competing with the demands in a large school, of establishing new relationships with community members – students, staff, college, board, the Carmelite Provincial
Council and parents – with the ongoing responsibilities of leadership and management in any setting,” he says. Throughout his career, Kirley says he has received a lot of good advice, including taking a holistic approach to education to ensure the intellectual, emotional, social, physical and spiritual needs of the students are met. And this is something he looks forward to at Whitefriars, as well as giving students his own valuable advice. “I advise them to learn ‘how you learn best’. Take opportunities and look for ways of creating them. Listen to and respect others. Enjoy challenges. Share your knowledge. Seek support,” Kirley says. While in his early career Kirley was inspired by his teachers, he now takes inspiration from the strong community like those at Whitefriars, “working with a community that constantly reflects on ‘what is best for the students’; our core beliefs and Christian values; strong, positive relationships; student voice; and researching and experiencing examples of best practice.” ● MELISSA HEAGNEY

cclaimed artist David Bromley’s artworks feature inside and out at The Residence, created by Mazzei Homes with architect Dan Webster, interior designers/artists David and Yuge Bromley and landscape architect Nathan Burkett. Recently launched at 57 Belmore Road, the five-bedroom home’s design visually connects diverse indoor and outdoor spaces via a spectacular doubleheight central gallery that fills both floors with natural light. Managing director Daniel Mazzei says Mazzei Homes have always built highend custom homes, but wanted something exceptional for this site. “We wanted to create an ‘art house’ working with leading Australian architects, interior designers, artists and landscape architects. This approach is used for elite multiresidential projects, but I believe it’s a first for a custom-designed house.” Prospective clients can book private, 90-minute viewings of The Residence which has a starting price of $1.15 million (without basement). As displayed the 728-square metre house is $2.6 million and has five en suite bedrooms, four interior and two outdoor living areas, a study, butler’s pantry and laundry with a five-car basement garage and storage. Inside, David and Yuge Bromley have created beautiful, welcoming spaces. Off the entrance an elegant, intimate living area is opposite a guest suite. Beyond, an open study with dual courtyard views is next to the expansive kitchen, dining and family living zone where a concealed door connects the butler’s pantry and laundry. Upstairs a central leisure area separates a palatial parents’ suite from three en suite family bedrooms. he clever architectural design of this stylish modern home maximises its footprint to suit growing families. Immediately to the left on entry is the property’s main bedroom, which opens via sliding doors to a private courtyard at the front of the home. A walk-in wardrobe adjoins this bedroom, along with a beautiful bathroom featuring terrazzo tiles, double shower, double vanity, tiled splashback, recessed shower storage and statement tapware. On the opposite side of the entry hallway is the storeroom/mudroom with outdoor access. The idea of this room is for residents to enter the home through the dedicated dirt zone to avoid trailing dirt through the home. The hallway – floored in engineered French oak – continues past the laundry and powder room to the openplan kitchen, dining and living area occupying the ground floor rear. The kitchen includes a statement marble top island bench and splashback, handle-less cabinetry, European appliances, fully integrated fridge and a butler’s pantry. There is also space for casual dining at the island bench. In the lounge room is a fireplace, concealed storage space and floor-to-ceiling glass windows framing views of the backyard. Stairs at the home’s entrance lead to the second floor designed with growing families in mind. The four bedrooms are of almost equal size, and all feature a built-in desk and wardrobe. The family bathroom, also with terrazzo tiles, is positioned at the centre of these bedrooms, featuring a large bath with shower head. Almost directly opposite is a second bathroom with a shower. Completing the upper floor is a rumpus room. Outside is a tiled area off the lounge room for outdoor dining looking over the lawn and tiled lap pool. Additional features of this home include a laundry chute, space for off-street parking in the driveway, heating/cooling and ceiling fans. The address is ideal for families with school-aged children; Korowa Anglican Girls’ School, Sacre Coeur, Malvern Central School (to which it is zoned) and De La Salle College are all within walking distance. The other rooms on this floor are flexible spaces that can be used as bedrooms (none of them have built-in wardrobes), although one has an open fireplace and can be used as a retreat. They share the home’s second bathroom. ● KATE STANTON AGENT \ Kay & Burton 9825 2565 PRICE \ $2.85 million – $3.1 million EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST \ Close on May 15 at 5pm Scan the code with the Domain app to view listing

With a pretty, English-style facade and the kind of light, bright interiors that Australians love, this house blends the best of old and new into something greater than the sum of it parts. A formal lounge with a bay window and adjoining dining room are to the right of the side entrance, while a Caesarstone kitchen and family area sit to the left. Rich hardwood floors are juxtaposed with crisp white walls. Out the back, there’s a timber deck and waterfall pool. The main bedroom upstairs has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite, and three further bedrooms share two bathrooms. A large rumpus room could double as a study or guest retreat. ● ERIN MUNRO
This three-bedroom house has already received plenty of press both at home and abroad, thanks to its striking contemporary form. Designed and owned by architect Jessica Liew, it combines natural and recycled materials, energy efficiency, and a soothing, retreat-like feel. Concrete floors, tumbled brick and hardwood timber walls, and antique Chinese screen doors feature throughout the ground level, which includes a formal living room, kitchen and family zone, and a central library fitted out with a Murphy bed for guests. Floor-to-ceiling windows along a hallway bring in the outside – which includes a fishpond. Bedrooms are all upstairs. ● ERIN MUNRO

What makes Smart Street so smart? The park, the playground, the walk to West Hawthorn shops, and gorgeous Victorian cottages such as this double-fronted belle, whose daintiness conceals spacious living and a deep, flowery garden. With living, dining and family rooms and three double bedrooms on a single level, the house would make a superb long-term base for a growing family. The central hall opens to three carpeted bedrooms with wardrobes; one has an open fireplace. The original living room glows in Baltic pine and has a fireplace and bookcase. Hosts with the most will enjoy the modern extension, where dark-stained floorboards grace dining and family areas that open to the decked lawn. The white kitchen is chic in Caesarstone with gas appliances. The central bathroom is fully tiled and has a shower, bath and countertop basin; there’s also a bathroom/laundry with a shower. The property has video intercom, ducted heating and airconditioning. The rear lane offers potential off-street parking. ● ALISON BARCLAY AGENT \ Marshall White 9822 9999 PRICE \ $1.8 million – $1.95 million AUCTION \ May 12 at 10.30am Scan the code with the Domain app to view listing

Original period features are preserved in this Californian bungalow, which has been renovated to create an airy, open floor plan that emphasises a flow between indoors and out. The expansive living and dining rooms at the front of the house are white with honey-toned floorboards, and feature brick open fireplaces and windows with period detailing. The kitchen has Bosch appliances and stone benches, overlooking the wide family room with bifold doors. The main bedroom, also on ground level, has a walk-in wardrobe that leads to a large en suite with double vanity. Upstairs, there are two more bedrooms. ● ERIN MUNRO
Gotta love Edwardian style; it gives such a smartly tailored air to houses built this century. This house has a vaulted, gabled first floor that evokes classic story-books. The ground floor is contemporary to the core, with a big living area that opens on two sides to courtyards. Tasmanian oak floorboards and stone and granite finishes ensure resilient good looks. The kitchen has Smeg appliances, ample storage and a dining area. Three double bedrooms include one downstairs with the bathroom adjacent, and two upstairs, the main with an en suite and walk-in wardrobe and attic store room. The double garage has internal access. ● ALISON BARCLAY
