utspoken Liberal MP Bernie Finn last week launched a tirade against western suburbs lobby group LeadWest. Speaking in State Parliament, the Western Metropolitan upper house member effectively accused the organisation of being a front for the Labor Party. Mr Finn even called on Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell to conduct an inquiry into the funding it receives from councils across the west. Founded in 2007, LeadWest states its objective is to ‘‘foster and undertake actions that will support sustainable growth and regional development of Melbourne’s west’’. Members include Wyndham, Brimbank, Melton, Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley councils, Western Health and Victoria University. Many similar advocacy groups operate across the state, including the Committee for Melbourne, G21 Geelong Region Alliance and our own Committee for Wyndham. Each passionately advocates on behalf of their communities, pressuring governments to listen to the needs of those they represent. Mr Finn also questioned if LeadWest was ‘‘value for money’’, claiming it was simply replicating economic, tourism and business promotion work of councils. He went on to claim LeadWest was the only group in the west to defend the federal government’s carbon tax. On its website, LeadWest states it has an independent chairman, Barry Harvey, five directors representing councils, and four directors elected by its members. Founding chairman Ralph Willis was a federal Labor MP and minister in the Hawke and Keating governments. While it’s not the first time Mr Finn has made headlines for making outrageous statements, this time he’s gone too far. Rather than attempting to discredit LeadWest, he would be better served holding those in his own party to account to ensure they deliver for the people he represents — the people of the west.

Prices sag as consumer confidence drops HOUSE prices in Wyndham have fallen by more than 10 per cent over the past year, according to new figures from the state’s peak real estate body. Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s September quarter figures show a drop in median house prices of between 5 and 13 per cent in all Wyndham’s suburbs except Werribee and Williams Landing, where prices fell by 0.1 and 1.3 per cent respectively. The largest decline in prices was in Point Cook. In September 2011, the median house price was $485,000. In September this year, the median price was just $420,000. Wyndham Vale prices fell almost 12 per cent to $300,000, while Hoppers Crossing recorded a drop of close to 7 per cent. Prices fell by 6 and 5.9 per cent in Tarneit and Truganina respectively. Point Cook Real Estate sales manager Peter Gaidzkar said Wyndham’s declining prices reflected Victoria’s slower economy. ‘‘No one would say that over the

It’s not just something for Australia, Victoria or Wyndham. ‘‘When consumer confidence comes back into the market, prices will rise again.’’ Wyndham was not the only area where house prices fell over the past year. In Melton, prices fell by 14 per cent, while in Altona the decline was 7 per cent. REIV chief executive Enzo Raimondo said buyers and sellers had been acting cautiously across the state in the past year, with consumer confidence at a low. Mr Gaidzkar said Wyndham’s house prices remained among Melbourne’s lowest, making it a popular area for first-home buyers. ‘‘There is improved affordability in the area. Coupled with decreases in interest rates, it has made Wyndham popular.’’

Cops grab $19m in drugs Cannabis crops have been seized from new housing estate properties in Tarneit during a massive police operation that has resulted in a haul of $19 million of drugs. Police have raided 46 properties in Melbourne’s north and west as part of Operation Taxa since July 30. They have arrested 19 people. Assistant Commissioner Steve Fontana said the aim of the continuing operation was to dismantle ‘‘grow houses’’ in a bid to crack down on organised crime syndicates involved in the production of cannabis.

Husband, wife lose licences A husband and wife from Point Cook have had their licences suspended after being caught speeding on Dunnings Road. Police stopped the woman, 32, at 7.10pm on Monday after detecting her travelling at 102km/h in a 60 zone. She was fined $599, lost six demerit points and had her licence suspended for six months. Her husband, who was driving behind her, was caught at 93km/h and was fined $458, lost four demerit points and had his licence suspended for one month.

New flood risk brings insurance rise shock BY LAURA LITTLE RESIDENTS of Werribee’s Vaina Street are in shock after receiving massive house insurance increases because they are considered to be living in a flood zone. The street, which is several kilometres from the Werribee River, has been declared a flood risk by Melbourne Water, prompting a large increase in insurance premiums. One resident, who asked not to be named, said his contents insurance had risen by 142 per cent

since last year. The resident rents a house in the street and last year took out renters insurance with CGU for $35 a month. When his renewal notice arrived in September, his payments had increased to $85. When he questioned the increase, CGU told him it was because his house was at risk of flooding. ‘‘It was a shock. I live at the northern end [of the street] and the river is at the southern end. ‘‘There is an embankment and another street between Vaina Street and the river. There is no way that river is going to

cause flooding in this street,’’ the resident said. ‘‘For it to flood there would need to be a Noah’s Ark situation. There are long-term residents who say they have never seen the street flood.’’ CGU said insurance premiums had increased because the company introduced automatic flood cover into its policies in February this year. Spokesman Sean Sampson said CGU used government and council inundation maps, as well as its own research and modelling, to determine which areas were at risk of flooding.

‘‘If customers disagree with our flood assessment they are welcome to contact us and provide any additional information they feel may assist in our knowledge of the flood risk.’’ Wyndham chief executive Kerry Thompson said the council was not responsible for flood maps. ‘‘Melbourne Water determines flooding areas based on their mapping and data.’’ She said the council had carried out mitigation work in the early 1990s, including the construction of a levy bank, to prevent flooding in the area.

Pregnant mum loses baby after car crash BY LAURA LITTLE POLICE are pleading with motorists and pedestrians to be alert and obey road rules after two deaths as a result of collisions on Wyndham roads. A 51-year-old man died after being hit by a car in Hoppers Crossing on Saturday and a baby girl died after a collision in Point Cook about 10am last Tuesday at the intersection of Boardwalk Boulevard and Dunnings Road. A pregnant Point Cook woman involved in the crash gave birth prematurely and the baby died in hospital later that day.

Police believe a man driving a white van stopped to help those involved in the crash and are appealing for him and other witnesses to contact them. The 51-year-old man was hit by a car about 3am on Saturday while crossing Hogans Road near the intersection of Bethany Road. Police said he was struck after stepping off the pedestrian traffic island in the middle of the road. He died at the scene. The driver of the car and her passenger, both women in their 20s, were not injured. The man was the second pedestrian killed crossing a road in Wyndham in the past month.

On September 14, a 33-year-old man died after being hit by a car while crossing Palmers Road near Sayers Road in Williams Landing. Leading Senior Constable Dawn Youla of Werribee police urged pedestrians to ensure they crossed roads in safe, well-lit locations at night and wore visible clothing. Drivers could make the roads safer by staying within speed limits and being alert to changing road conditions, she said. ‘‘Unfortunately, within the Wyndham area there have been two recent fatal collisions. ‘‘These incidents should highlight to all road users the importance of remaining fully focused

Dog ‘pacifier’ savaged A MAN attacked by a dog in Mossfiel Park hopes a Wyndham Council investigation will lead to its owner being prosecuted. Hoppers Crossing resident Ian Price was walking his dog on October 8 when another man walked by without having his dog, believed to have been an American pitbull, on a lead. ‘‘Our two dogs started sniffing each other and then just went hell for leather,’’ Mr Price said. ‘‘We tried to restrain them but before I knew it, his dog has snapped at my hand.’’ The bite left a deep, open gash on Mr Price’s left hand, tearing it from his knuckles to his wrist. ‘‘I was in a great deal of pain. There really was a lot of blood everywhere, and at one stage it was squirting straight into the air.’’ Four people intervened to try to restrain the dogs, Mr Price said, before he left the park, rushed home and called paramedics. Mr Price spent the night at the Northern Hospital in Epping where he

After first identifying the dog as a Staffordshire bull terrier, Mr Price said council rangers and his doctor at Northern Health confirmed the bite marks and description matched that of an American pitbull terrier. The council’s legislative services team is investigating and is asking for witnesses to help identify its owner. Restricted-breed dogs, like American pitbulls, must be on a leash and muzzled when taken for walks. There are 31 restricted-breed dogs registered in Wyndham. One attack involving a restricted breed dog has been reported to the council since September last year. It is one year since the state government introduced tough new laws for dangerous dogs after four-year-old St Albans girl Ayen Chol was killed by an unregistered pitbull cross. Mr Price said he’d had recurring nightmares about the attack.

Tax for roads idea hits a hurdle BY LAURA LITTLE and NICK TOSCANO THE federal government has rejected housing industry calls for carbon tax revenue to bankroll infrastructure projects in outer suburbs. The Urban Development Institute of Australia last week urged the government to consider funding roads, tunnels, public transport and employment precincts with carbon tax revenue. UDIA state director, Tony De Domenico, said the need for substantial investment was mostpressing in growth areas such as Wyndham, Melton, Hume Whittlesea and Casey, where massive population growth was outstripping available infrastructure. Tight economic times and the federal government’s lower GST allocations to Victoria this year meant the state government couldn’t afford to fund these much-needed projects on its own, he said. Mr De Domenico said investing carbon tax revenue in infrastructure ‘‘made sense’’ environmentally because the projects would reduce pollution from peak-hour traffic snarls. ‘‘One has to ask the question why public infrastructure such as roads, tunnels or public transport cannot be financed in part from carbon tax credits as they all will help reduce carbon

pollution.’’ Mr De Domenico said creating employment opportunities in growth areas would also help slash the numbers of cars on the roads during peak periods. But the federal government said revenue from the tax was already being used to cut emissions through investment in clean energy, with the remainder going into assistance packages to cushion the blow of price hikes on household budgets. A spokesman for Prime Minister and Lalor MP Julia Gillard said it was appropriate that carbon tax revenue was being used for investments that would help shift Australia to a lower carbon economy. He said funding for infrastructure projects, including Regional Rail Link, were provided through Infrastructure Victoria. Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury supported the housing industry’s push for carbon tax cash, saying Victoria was not getting its ‘‘fair share’’ of federal funds. LeadWest chief executive Anton Mayer said he would support the UDIA’s calls as long as the money was used for sustainable infrastructure projects. ‘‘As long as [the money] is used in such a way to make sure people don’t have to drive 40 kilometres to work I think it is a good idea.’’

Preferences give candidate a leg up BY LAURA LITTLE PREFERENCE deals could lead to Harrison ward candidate Intaj Khan being elected to Wyndham Council. The Truganina resident has received the highest number of preferences for the ward, which takes in Point Cook and Truganina. Mr Khan received six second preferences and three third preferences from Mohammed Isah, Stephen Thurling, Leigh Ryan, Elizabeth Hindley, Freshta Saweqa, Gurpreet Singh, Bob Fairclough, Shaheedabanu Shaikh and Dinesh Gourisetty. Mr Khan said most of his preferences had come from other Labor-aligned candidates or candidates with policies similar to his. In Chaffey ward, which covers Hoppers Crossing and Tarneit, Gautam Gupta and Marie Brittan have received the most preferences. Neil Anderson, Lyndell Giordimaina, Deborah Brown, Jeanette Magro and Nicholas Angelowitsch, all members of the

Fair Rates Committee, directed preferences to Mr Gupta. The committee was started in August after shock rate rises for properties in parts of Tarneit. Ms Brittan received preferences from councillors Shane Bourke and Kim McAliney, as well as George Tomkins and Michelle Wharrie. In Iramoo, Heather Marcus and Peter Maynard got the most second preferences. Mr Maynard received preferences from Ramandeep Singh, Anthony Cahill and Cynthia Manson, while Cr Marcus was preferenced by Peter Gibbons, Kylie Cowie and Nathan Tavendale. Victorian Electoral Commission spokeswoman Sue Lang said preferences played a vital role in fields with many candidates. If no candidate receives a majority of first preference votes, preferences are distributed until an absolute majority is achieved. Ballot papers were posted to houses last week and must be returned by October 26.

WERRIBEE’S CFA road rescue team is out to prove it’s the best in the world. The team, which is made up of volunteers from the Werribee and Wyndham Vale CFAs, will compete in the World Rescue Challenge in London next week. It won a place at the challenge after finishing first at the national titles in New Zealand last year. Rob Mitchell, Michael Wells, Lino Zulian, Adrian Kendall, Mark Mummery, Phil Menzies and Trevor Weston will test their rescue techniques in a series of events at the three-day competition. Teams will be assessed on their control and command of a situation, medical response and the length of time taken to complete the rescue. As reported by the Weekly, the Werribee road rescue team was called to 52 motor vehicle accidents in the five months to September this year. Mr Wells said the competition would improve the team’s ability to respond to accidents in Werribee. While nervous about representing Australia at the championship, he said the team had trained hard. “It has taken us 10 years of training together to get to this level . . . we have won many competitions and placed exceptionally high, which is reward for all of the hard work we’ve put in.’’ — Laura Little

TAFE cuts push jobs out of reach BY BENJAMIN MILLAR and NICK TOSCANO MASSIVE cuts to TAFE funding in the western suburbs will cause considerable harm to the area’s prospects, according to a new study. The Social Impacts on Melbourne’s West of TAFE Funding Cuts report by regional lobby group LeadWest finds the cuts are ‘‘of considerable significance’’. Victoria University stands to lose $40 million in TAFE funding, one of the biggest cuts statewide. As reported by the Weekly, VU is slashing almost 80 courses and more than 100 teaching jobs and cutting a swathe through support programs. The report questioned the cutting of training for low-skilled residents at a time of rising unemployment in Melbourne’s west. The area has above-average

unemployment and lower levels of students completing year 12, particularly in Wyndham, Brimbank and Melton. The report found unemployment was especially high among people born in non-English-speaking countries (10.6 per cent). ‘‘Foundation training offered through VET [Vocational Education and Training] is a key enabler for this group to gain employment,’’ the report stated. Higher Education and Skills Minister Peter Hall disputed the report, saying the government was making record investment in vocational education and training, including an extra $1 billion over the next four years. The report rejected the government’s claims that it was increasing vocational education, stating the increase was for private colleges, not public TAFE.

Concession fees for students under 25 studying a diploma or advanced diploma course have also been removed. “I started doing a certificate III in children’s services last week, even though I wanted to do something with art. I love to paint and draw and be creative . . . But VU’s prices have risen and I’m not rich, I come from a very middle-class background so we do have to think about money,” Mr Beckers said. While similar visual arts courses were on offer elsewhere, poor public transport links from Wyndham meant he couldn’t access them without a car. MP claims ALPLeadWest link LIBERAL MP Bernie Finn has launched an extraordinary attack on western suburbs lobby group LeadWest, accusing it of being a Labor Party front. In State Parliament on Thursday, Mr Finn called on Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell to investigate the Maribyrnong-based organisation over the “hundreds of thousands of dollars” it was receiving from local councils. Mr Finn’s questioned whether LeadWest was fulfilling its role or simply boosting Labor’s prospects in the west. “There is a view in Melbourne’s west that LeadWest is just an extremely well-funded organisation to provide an independent third-party endorsement for the Labor Party,” he said. “The view can’t be easily dismissed when we consider that the only

group in the west that defended the Gillard carbon tax last year during my campaign against it was indeed LeadWest.” LeadWest manager (business and projects) Craig Rowley described the attack as ‘‘bizarre’’. He said it was unclear what Mr Finn wanted the minister to do and under which powers. ‘‘There are other bodies like G21 in Geelong performing the same kind of role. Is he asking for these bodies to be investigated, too?’’ Mr Rowley said LeadWest had never defended the carbon tax, but it reflected the view of many businesses in the west which saw new opportunities in a clean-energy economy. He added that businesses cited lack of training as the biggest issue in the area, hence LeadWest highlighting the potential damage to the area through the ‘‘bad public policy’’ of TAFE cuts.

Teacher Michelle Deans has been at Cambridge since it opened and has seen many changes over the years. ‘‘In 1992 there were just 200 children and now we have over 800 kids. The students were mainly Anglo-Saxon and now we have so many different ethnic backgrounds. We have 67 different nationalities.’’ The school’s grounds have also developed. ‘‘Our football oval used to just be a ground with rocks. We had a roster of grades to collect rocks from the oval so the students could play on it.’’ The fete is from 10am-3pm.

Jobless line grows BY NICK TOSCANO UNEMPLOYMENT in Melbourne’s west is rising faster than anywhere in the city, with ex-manufacturing workers continuing to join the jobless queue. Bureau of Statistics figures released last week show the national unemployment rate reached 5.4 per cent in September, up from 5.1 per cent in August. While the Victorian jobless rate was steady at 5.4 per cent, the outlook was worse for Melbourne’s outer-western suburbs where 6.9 per cent were out of work. Youth unemployment was 14.9 per cent. A new report from the state opposition shows the area’s electorates have recorded the sharpest unemployment increases since December 2010. The report, which compiled unemployment data from December 2010 to June 2012, ranked the electorates of Tarneit, Altona and Derrimut as the three Melbourne areas with the highest jumps in the jobless rate. Within the electorate of Tarneit, spanning Tarneit, Werribee, Werribee South and Hoppers Crossing, unemployment increased

2.6 per cent. For the Altona district – including Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton and Point Cook – the figures showed an increase of 2 per cent. Michael Wasley, general manager of job agency MatchWorks, said the western suburbs were continually ‘‘over-represented’’ in unemployment figures due to the decline in manufacturing and retail industries. ‘‘In the western suburbs, being a traditionally blue-collar area, these industries are hurting and that’s having an impact,’’ he said. Mr Wasley said MatchWorks’ Werribee branch had faced a rise in the number laid off from car manufacturing plants. Tarneit Labor MP and opposition employment spokesman Tim Pallas said NSW had created 46,000 full-time jobs in September, while Victoria created 1400. ‘‘Other state governments are attracting business investment and investing themselves in major infrastructure projects to create jobs, [but] the Baillieu government seems too weak or lazy to get Victoria moving.’’ Manufacturing, Exports and Trade Minister Richard Dalla-Riva said the state’s manufacturing sector had held up strongly despite the high Australian dollar.

WISE Werribee manager Peter Gallagher said the research results highlighted widespread negative perceptions of mental illness that did not match the reality. ‘‘Out of our 250 job seekers, about a quarter would be known to have a mental disability, including bipolar, autism spectrum, depression and anxiety, and often a person with a mental illness could be the best person for the job,’’ he said. ‘‘We want employers to broaden their thought process.’’ — Nick Toscano

Difficult mix: Jay says panic and anxiety attacks made finding a job almost impossible.

HAVING a mental illness is a bigger barrier to employment than physical disability, new research has revealed. Research commissioned by not-for-profit jobs provider WISE, as part of last week’s Mental Health Week, found there was a stigma about employing people with a mental illness. They could be unreliable and disruptive, half the respondents believe. The McNair Ingenuity Research survey of 253 small and medium-sized businesses revealed 32 per cent said they would be likely to employ a person with a mental illness, compared with 46 per cent for someone with a physical disability. And 35 per cent said they would be unlikely to employ someone with a mental illness – with ‘‘unpredictable behaviour’’ cited as the top reason why they would not be hired. Werribee resident Jay (not her real name) said that during two years of unemployment, she found stressful job interviews and clinical anxiety didn’t mix.

As reported by the Weekly online, the Caroline Springs town centre campus was last week purchased by Truganina businessman Intaj Khan for $6.3 million, while Mowbray’s Patterson campus in Melton has been sold to Heathdale Christian College. Sources have also revealed that Grace Street Child Care Centre and Kindergarten has purchased the third former Mowbray campus, in Brookside. One source, who asked not to be named, confirmed with the Weekly that the child care centre had finalised the sale. After almost 30 years, Mowbray officially closed its doors at the end of June after it was revealed it was more than $18 million in debt. Former Mowbray parent Jacqueline MacKenzie said parents were happy with the sales. ‘‘It’s very pleasing and I think we are all relieved that developers did not get a hold of the land,’’ she said. Ms MacKenzie, Eliza Agapiou and Emma Nathan worked with the failed school’s bank,

In July, the Weekly revealed Mr Khan — chief executive of Western Institute of Technology — was seeking to purchase the college’s Caroline Springs campus, but his initial offer was knocked back. Mr Khan said he hoped to open a vocational education centre, using the school’s current infrastructure, by the end of next month. ‘‘It was a disgrace that school even had to close in the first place and I feel so sad for the students who didn’t get to stay,’’ he said. ‘‘Hopefully, the new facility will provide more learning opportunities for people in the west.’’ He said his proposal was expected to provide 10-20 jobs. It’s believed the Patterson campus in Melton was sold for $8.5 million, while the Brookside campus, also in Caroline Springs, was sold for $3.3 million. Fitzroys, the real estate agents overseeing the sale, did not return calls before the Weekly went to print.

Carers need someone to rely on, too BY LAURA LITTLE MARGO Kendall knows how challenging caring for a loved one can be. The Werribee resident has been a full-time carer to husband Neville since he had two strokes in February. Speaking as part of this week’s Carers Week, Mrs Kendall says it has changed the dynamics of their relationship. ‘‘We were a team,’’ she says. ‘‘Everything we did to the house, we did together. I am very lucky he has got another chance to live, but it feels like I have lost my best friend.’’ Her new role means she has to rely on others to help do everyday tasks like shopping, banking and visiting the post office. Often, it’s Mr Kendall’s close friends who look after him while his wife goes to the supermarket, with Wyndham Council’s aged care services able to provide Mrs Kendall with only two hours of respite each fortnight. She also has to rely on Carers Victoria to provide someone to

shower her husband on weekends, with the council service able to help out only Monday to Friday. And while Mrs Kendall says her husband is very considerate, limited support for carers in Wyndham makes looking after him challenging. ‘‘I am very grateful for the help I get given how stretched the services are here, but there needs to be more help for carers. ‘‘My husband is a very thoughtful man who is concerned for me. He is a joy and not a demanding man but sometimes I need more help. ‘‘We hear about the growth of Werribee but obviously the services and staff are really pushed to the limit. There is only so much they can do.’’ Mrs Kendall, who has worked in palliative care and volunteered with groups such as Meals on Wheels, says while looking after her husband can be difficult, having him home is better than putting him in aged care. ‘‘It would be a step backward for him. In aged care his quality of life could be worse.’’

With 25 years’ experience as a Victoria Police officer and 15 years running his own private investigations company, Fagan’s view is supported by the evidence. From the stereotypical cheating spouse or cyber love-rat to the corporate fraudster it seems we have good grounds to be suspicious with the digital age providing unparalleled opportunities. Throw in the economic downturn and you have motive, which has led to a huge increase in fraud from the small-scale overtime rorts [ 16 ] WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE

In 2011-2012 there were 1330 people in Victoria alone specifically licensed as private investigators. Many, like Fagan, are ex-police. The director of the Australian Security Management Group, which trains upwards of 40 PIs a year, estimates about 60 per cent come from a law enforcement background. “There are no Weetie packet detectives leaving our establishment,” Fagan says. Most will run a mile from the cheating hearts cases and specialise in particular aspects of investigation like risk management, insurance fraud, background checks and skip tracing.

It’s very different from what the former mechanical design engineer imagined when he first moved into the investigations field. “I admit I had the romantic idea of spying and surveillance, hiding in the bushes with my army background, at that stage not realising there was this whole other world of circumstantial investigation,” he says. He has done the odd investigation which has called for the camouflage gear, but more often he’s in a high visibility vest talking to people directly after being called in by HR to investigate allegations of bullying, harassment

or discrimination that might form the basis of stress claims. Since 2006-07 there has been a 54 per cent increase in the number of mental stress claims. The average claim for psychological injury is $29,000 and the average time off is 20 weeks, with overwork and stress now estimated to cost Australia $30 billion a year – half the total workplace injury bill. “Stress claims now are today’s equivalent of repetitive strain injuries of the 1980s,” Earl says. “We are in a climate now when so many people are questioning whether they are going to have a job next week and we are all working 24 hours a day seven days a week with technology. People are stressed. “But stress claims are highly investigated now because they are not tangential. It is not like you chopped your arm off. We need to find out what the facts are.

1.2 million Australians were the victim of personal fraud in 2010-11 “Since Brodie’s Law (an amendment to the Crimes Act introduced after waitress Brodie Panlock killed herself because of workplace bullying) this sort of investigation has become more and more important. “Companies can’t afford not to take it seriously,” he adds. In tough times more people are tempted to try soft options for increasing their income, translating to what Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) Global Economic Crime Survey identified as “an epidemic of fraud permeating Australian organisations.” Nobody knows this better than Tim Carrodus, a former Victoria Police detective inspector who has worked as a senior investigator for the United Nations and World Bank Group. “I think fraud will only increase,” the principal of Bottomline Investigation and Advisory Services (BIAAS) says. “All the research

indicates a majority of fraud goes unreported. It’s typical with the nature of fraud. Fraud is a hidwen crime and it’s often discovered too late to recover from it. Early intervention is the most important thing.” Without professional help it can be hard for the victim to even make a case to police or lawyers. As Carrodus puts it: “If you walk home at night and someone comes behind you and punches you in the head and steals your handbag it is pretty obvious a crime has happened. You have got a bruised face, you may have other injuries, your handbag’s missing and there might be witnesses to it. “So it is very, very easy for the police to establish that you are the victim of a crime. “With fraud we have to do the same thing, but it is more arduous to prove that, because

most fraud is hidden – that is the whole nature of it. “You have no bruises. What you have is a business in turmoil and no money in the bank, but we have to establish what has happened. “I have two cases now where there has been a lot of trust involved between the business partners over many many years and in each case one of them has ripped off the other. “The people who come and see me are bewildered by it. They are severely traumatised by the experience because they had so much trust in this other person. “I have seen a lot of that happen over the years. “It’s tragic. Good companies and good businesses that had a lot of potential have failed because of it.”

As a Salvation Army volunteer, Mr Porter does what he can to help Wyndham’s homeless and struggling residents by taking part in fund-raisers or helping prepare meals. On Saturday, Mr Porter will begin his biggest fund-raising event of the year, the Wyndham 1000. As part of the annual ride, he will ride 1000 kilometres around Wyndham during three weeks to raise money for Wyndham City Salvation Army. The money will be used to create care packs for homeless people. The packs will include soap, towels, toothbrushes and toothpaste. ‘‘So many homeless people come into the Salvation Army and they don’t even have the basics,’’ Mr Porter said. ‘‘We want to get kits made up so that they have soap and toothpaste and other things we take for granted.’’ Completing the ride will be no easy feat for Mr Porter, who was hit by a car 25 years ago. But for people who are blind or have low vision, this everyday activity becomes more challenging. International White Cane Day (October 15) is a wonderful opportunity to recognise the great impact this simple tool has had in enabling independence for Australians who are blind. This year, Vision Australia’s Seeing Eye Dog orientation and mobility division has supported almost 5000 clients to achieve their mobility goals. Games good as gold Competing again has given this transplant patient confidence, writes Laura Little ndrew Cox views each of the 12 medals he won at this month’s National Transplant Games as a reminder of the importance of organ donation. The Hoppers Crossing resident took part in the games in Newcastle for the fourth time since receiving a heart transplant when he was 30. Cox needed the transplant after being diagnosed at 15 with cardiomyopathy, a deterioration of the heart muscle which puts sufferers at risk of sudden death. Doctors made the diagnosis after he went into cardiac arrest during a year 10 physical education class. He was clinically dead for several minutes before paramedics revived him and took him to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition. Cox also sustained a hypoxic brain injury as a result of his brain being

starved of oxygen when he collapsed, forcing him to have to learn again to walk and talk. Four years later, Cox went into cardiac arrest again during a game of netball. Doctors fitted a pacemaker but it failed to control his condition and he needed a heart transplant at 30. During his recovery, Cox was advised to take part in the transplant games. A keen sportsman, he had been a state-level cricketer, tennis player and talented ballroom dancer as a teenager, so Cox jumped at the chance. ‘‘I found that the games were a good way to meet other people who were in the same boat and could tell me about the journey ahead of me.’’ This year, Cox competed in team and individual events in cycling, track and field, swimming, volleyball and ten-pin bowling.

He won gold medals in his individual ten-pin bowling event and the five-kilometre walk. ‘‘The games have helped with my self-confidence and knowing that I can do physical activity,’’ Cox said. ‘‘I did a lot better this year than the last time I competed and it was good knowing I could cope with the pressure.’’ Cox said the aim of the games was to encourage people to think about organ and tissue donation before it was too late. He said too many people waited until something happened to their loved ones before they thought about being an organ or tissue donor. ‘‘I urge everyone not to wait, to get on the donor register.’’ To become an organ donor, go to donatelife.gov.au.
