Information Program Overview

Registration/Confirmation

Cancellation/Refund Policy

• The Wellington Summer Program is

• Register according to the grade your child will enter in fall 2019.

• After registering online, you will receive a confirmation email immediately.

• A registration fee of $15 per camper is required at time of registration.

• Course fees are located in the camp descriptions.

• Registration is not complete until payment is received.

• Payments are accepted in the form of credit card, cash, or personal check.

• Returned checks and ACH denials/ errors are charged $30 per infraction.

Due to the necessity for a minimum number of students to be enrolled in every course, we must adhere to the following policy regarding cancellations.

• The program complements busy summer schedules by offering fullday, morning-only, and afternoon-only camps.

• Extended Day care is available before and after programs daily.

• You may register for one or multiple programs throughout the summer.

The choice is yours.

• Registration is processed online.

Enrollment is fast, safe, and easy.

• Registration opens February 1 at 7 a.m.

• Registration remains open all summer, so you can go back and add classes at any time.

Waiting Lists • All camps have enrollment limits to provide an optimal experience for campers.

• Once a class reaches capacity, you may choose to join an online waiting list.

• You will be notified via email if a spot becomes available and you will have 24 hours to accept the open spot. After the 24-hour window expires, the open spot is passed on to the next person on the waiting list.

• There is no fee or deposit to join a waiting list.

• A full refund, minus a $50 cancellation fee per class, will be given if you cancel a class for any reason prior to May 24. After that date, no refunds will be given unless a program is cancelled.

Exceptions will be considered for medical circumstances (a letter from a licensed physician is required).

• Wellington Summer Program office reserves the right to cancel any program for which there is insufficient enrollment. All efforts will be made to assign students affected to another available camp. If placement is not possible, a full refund or credit for a future program will be granted.

• Refunds, prorated rates, or discounts will not be provided for camper absences, including vacation schedules or conflicting activities.

• If a child is removed for disciplinary reasons, there will be no refund.

Photographs

• Lunch is provided by Wellington’s dining service company, Aladdin Food Management Services, and available for purchase at $30/week.

• Lunches will consist of a variety of kid friendly foods. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, milk, and fruit will be available daily.

• Students who have dietary restrictions must bring lunch from home.

• Lunch must be registered and paid for at least a week in advance to ensure availability.

• Campers are welcome to bring a sack lunch from home, however please note no refrigeration will be available.

• Enter on Reed Road and make an immediate right into the visitor parking lot.

• Please park in the lot and walk your child into the rotunda where members of our staff will greet you and assist in finding your child’s program location.

• DO NOT park along the curb in front of the main entrance of the school.

• Check-in directly with your teacher in the location of your program. Specific program locations will be emailed the week prior to your program start date.

• NOTE: If your child arrives before 8:50 a.m., he or she will be entered into the Extended Day program and charged the daily drop-in rate of $17.

• During one of our programs, your child’s photograph may be taken.

These photos may be used in future Wellington Summer Program publications, on the school’s social media accounts, the Wellington website, or other promotions.

• Please contact the Summer Program Director in writing prior to your child attending camp if you do not want your child to be photographed.

Extended Day Program

Pick-Up

• Before and after care are available to Summer Program participants from 7:30 - 9 a.m. and 3:30 - 6 p.m.

• A parent or caregiver must accompany the child into before and out of after care. Parents must sign their child in with the Extended Day Director when they are dropped off in the morning and must sign their child out during pick-up in the afternoon.

• We encourage parents to sign up online in advance to help our administration better plan for staffing needs; however, we recognize that may not always be possible and we do permit drop-ins without previous registration.

• There is a strict $1/minute per child late fee for all campers picked up after 6 p.m.

• Fee structure: • Before Care - $50 per week • After Care - $65 per week • Before and After Care Combo - $85 per week

• Please park in the main lot in front of the school. Pick-up for students in prekindergarten – 4th grade will occur from the classroom/space where the program occurs daily. Pick-up for middle school students will take place in the rotunda with their instructor.

Specific instructions will be emailed the week prior to your program start date.

• The teacher will release the student only to parents/individuals who are listed on the authorized pick-up list.

You may log in to your account to add additional individuals to your authorized pickup list at any time.

• NOTE: If your child is not picked up by 3:40 p.m., he or she will be entered into the Extended Day program and charged the daily drop-in rate of $21.

Field Trips • Waivers are provided by email prior to the start of camp for programs that are not located on the Wellington campus.

• School busses provide transportation for off-campus trips as noted in the description of the program.

• Lunches are not provided on full-day field trips. Students must bring a sack lunch.

Medication • If your child must take medication while here, please complete the Administration of Medication form, available for download at wellington.org/summer.

• You AND your doctor must complete and sign this form before Summer Program staff can dispense medication to your child.

• Please provide an adequate supply of your child’s medication in a labeled container, including dosage instructions and the doctor’s name. If medication is not picked up within 30 days of the last administered dose, it will be discarded.

HIGH SCHOOL FOR-CREDIT PROGRAMS Why spend the summer in class?

Students value the ability to delve deeply into one content area without other demands on their schedule.

For-credit classes help students fulfill a graduation requirement in order to free up space in their school-year schedule.

• Programs are open to students from any high school.

• Please check with your child’s school prior to registering for a program to ensure your school will accept the academic credit earned in our Summer Program.

• Daily attendance is mandatory in order to earn academic credit.

• You will earn 1/3 credit (the equivalent of one trimester) for the program you complete.

• Credit is documented through an official letter to the student indicating the summer course title, credit earned, and final grade. A copy of this letter may also be mailed to the student’s school upon request.

• Summer courses are aligned with the academic policies described in the Wellington Course Brochure and Policy Handbook.

Acrobatics & Circus Arts

ACT Test Prep Boot Camp

This crash course boot camp will prepare students for the June 8 and July 13 administration of the ACT. Following the format they should expect on test day, students will take a full-length diagnostic test on the first day using actual ACT test questions. Students will receive an individualized score analysis, differentiated instruction based on the results of their practice test, and valuable tips and strategies to help them navigate the most challenging problems from every section. Each day will focus on a different section of the test, with general test-taking tips interspersed throughout the week. Students will assemble a helpful “cheat sheet� based on their own proficiency levels and refer to this list of helpful hints often through a series of drills and coaching sessions of varying lengths. As a springboard to the Saturday morning test, students will receive 16 hours of intensive instruction supplemented by drills tailored to their specific areas of need. Students of every level of proficiency are encouraged to attend. No academic credit is awarded for taking this program.

Ready to run off to the circus for a week?

Students will have the opportunity to explore all things tumbling and perform acrobatic skills such as handstands, rolls, backbends, cartwheels, partner acrobatics, etc. Students will challenge their balancing skills on the low tight wire, rolla bolla, and additional hand balancing fun. During this program, we will also learn about different object manipulation such as juggling, plate spinning, hula hooping, and so much more!

Advanced Coed Soccer

This program is designed for middle school players who are driven to improve their technical skills as well as develop and hone decision making on and off the ball. Emphasis will be placed on developing a strong relationship with the ball and playing the game with the proper mindset to allow for creativity, team play, and thoughtful decision making.

African Safari

We have got our binoculars! Uh-oh, tall grass! Guess we will have to go through it.

Oh no, a river! Guess we will have to swim across. Oh, I see a lion! Join us on an African Safari to discover what other animals we may see on our safari expedition. Students will explore the safari through songs, crafts, stories, and creative movement.

All Things Sculpture

Students will explore all the possibilities of sculpture as we bring this three-dimensional art form to life. Sculpture has been around for thousands of years and can be made from an endless array of materials.

Students will learn a variety of techniques and develop their skills while creating sculptural works from paper, wood, wire, and plaster.

Amazing Acting

Explore the wonderful world of performing arts! This class will introduce students to the many techniques of acting for the stage: stage presence, vocal quality,

physicality, and character development.

Students will also learn the importance of collaboration and communication as they work with others to perform poems, monologues, and short scenes during a final performance for family and friends.

Courses A-Z Amusement Park Science

How do roller coasters work? What makes bumper cars hover? Students will discover the science behind their favorite amusement park attractions as we take a ride into amusement parks. Watch physics come to life in this hands-on, exploratory program.

Animal Kingdom

Join us for a weeklong expedition around the world as we discover and celebrate some of the animal kingdom’s most endangered species. Students will learn about animals like the giant panda, the bald eagle, and snow leopards. We will celebrate what makes these rare animals so special through an assortment of books, crafts, and games. Along the way, we will make a variety of crafts including snow leopard masks, bald eagle puppets, and handprint polar bears. Join us to celebrate the hidden treasures of the animal kingdom.

Arcade Electronics Galore

Prepare to build and play your own arcade games. Students will have resistors, switches, wires, LED diodes, transistors and much more at their disposal this week.

Students will learn about the effects of different electronic components as they build, program, and test a home run derby game, memory games, and much more. The fun does not stop there, as we will build an electronic circuit to play the card game 21 and learn how to program the circuit board.

Discover the effects of different electronic components: amps, volts, resistance and power, while playing with a disco ball, sirens, or a light show.

Architects, Engineers, & Inventors

Did you know it took Thomas Edison 1,000 attempts to invent the light bulb?

When a reporter asked how it felt to fail so many times, Edison answered, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.” Over the course of this week, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they tinker, dream, plan, invent, design, and build. Students will engage with a variety of materials and hands-on investigations to explore STEM principles such as cause and effect relationships and spatial awareness. We will also practice cooperation, listening, speaking, teamwork, and perseverance – integral skills to the success of our keenest thinkers.

Art Around the World

Ready to take a trip around the world?

Students will start by making a passport for our journey to travel to all seven continents to learn about cultures across the world and how they express themselves through art. Highlights from our world tour include gargoyles in France, Kente cloth in Ghana, Indonesia batik, Aboriginal dot paintings in Australia, and Aztec suns in South America.

By the end of the week, students will have a suitcase full of art and a heart full of memories from their artistic travels around the world!

Students will spend the week developing their problem-solving skills through hands-on math and STEM challenges.

Students will study and implement problem-solving strategies from guessand-check to working backwards and everything in between, while solving complex math and STEM problems. The challenges will require inductive and deductive reasoning, creativity, and perseverance to build math problemsolving skills.

Art Portfolio Development Workshop

In this weeklong workshop, students will get a jump-start on their art portfolio and gain a firm understanding of what to expect as they begin to move through the college application process. We will explore the required components of an art portfolio, learn how to properly document artwork for applications, and create a website to organize students’ digital portfolios. Each student should bring 5-7 pieces of their best work and any previous sketchbooks.

The weeklong program will focus on posture, breathing and breath support, and placement and vowel formation for singing. Local Matters’ Food Matters program shares healthful food education, skills, and knowledge to create fun and delicious meals using fresh and seasonal whole foods! Students will learn where healthy food comes from, how it grows (even growing some of their own to bring home), and what healthy foods do for our bodies.

They will understand the importance of positive food choices through hands-on food preparation and fun food activities.

Whether students are planting their own herbs and container plants or practicing life skills preparing healthful meals, they will learn everything from understanding the USDA MyPlate to chopping, peeling, and sautéing. Archaeology and paleontology come to life in this weeklong program. Each student will partake in a simulated fossil excavation, uncovering different bones of a dinosaur. We will then assemble the bones to form a completed threedimensional dinosaur that students will take home at the end of the week. We will have a whole assortment of tools to aid our efforts such as excavation tools, labels, specimen bags, and geological and fossil time charts. Students will examine fossil replicas and make their own out of plaster. Students will identify 20-millionyear-old shark’s teeth and see other fossil replicas such as a cave bear tooth, an ammonite, a Tyrannosaurus rex tooth or a dinosaur egg. Come see and work with our rock and mineral collection, learn how to identify different rocks and minerals, and even hold a giant pumice rock specimen from Mt. St. Helens.

Courses A-Z Glass Art

Students will use traditional and digital media as they design and build their own stained glass windows. Working with glass is a unique medium for high school students and presents opportunities for problem solving along the way. The culmination of this course is the creation of a unique stained glass window. Government

This three-week course focuses on the United States government and will include an examination of the Constitution, governmental philosophies, federalism, the interplay of the three branches of government, and the civic roles of Americans. The course will cover the historical and philosophical foundations of the Constitution, changes to that Constitution that furthered the ideals of the Declaration of Independence, the power and role of the President, and the legislative process. Students will study these topics through articles and resources representing a broad range of ideologies and disciplines. Students will be able to converse as educated citizens about the structure and principles of our republic and have the tools to involve themselves in the process of governing. Guitar Hero

This program will introduce students to the fundamentals of playing guitar, reading tabs, and playing single notes and basic chords. After the basics are introduced, students will learn excerpts from pop songs with the goal of playing these as a group at the end of the week. Additionally, students will explore and learn how to properly read sheet music, the differences between different types of guitars, and historical developments in music as they relate to the instrument. Columbus Children’s Theatre’s professional teaching artists have the skills that will assist students in learning songs by using sheet music and an accompanist to teach vocal parts that will blend the harmonies just like a Broadway music director. Horseback Riding

Saddle up and join the fun at Liberty Farm!

Gentle horses and quality staff provide a safe, encouraging environment to learn the basics of hunt seat riding. Daily riding lessons and games provide a fun, safe environment for students to explore and practice basic skills. Students will spend time in the barn learning hands-on skills such as grooming, leading and handling, and tacking up. Students will also learn about different types and breeds of horses, the difference between a fetlock and a forelock, and most importantly about the special relationship between horses and people. Parents and families are invited to join us on the last day of the program to see how much students learn throughout the week! Bring a packed lunch, a water bottle, a change of clothes for the creek, and a bike helmet (if you have one). We will provide a healthy snack each day. Junior Firefighter Academy

Have you ever thought about being a firefighter? Throughout the week, students will engage in hands-on firefighter-like activities including comprehensive fire safety practices, fire escape plan design, basic first aid, and fire extinguisher use. Hoover Sailing Club has offered sailing instruction for Central Ohio youth for nearly 50 years. Students will experience the joy of skippering their own boat from our fleet during their very first lesson. Our experienced US Sailing Certified staff will teach basic safety and boat skills. Students will learn to sail up-wind, down-wind, tack, jibe, and recover from a capsized boat in this program. The picturesque Hoover Sailing Club property and remodeled facilities will provide students with an unforgettable week. Students are required to pack a peanut- and tree nut-free lunch and bring their own USCG-approved life jacket. Medieval Machinations: MinecraftEDU

MinecraftEDU is an expansive game that lets players design and create unique worlds with amazing structures.

One of the more complicated aspects of MinecraftEDU is Redstone, which is MinecraftEDU’s version of electrical circuitry. This program will introduce students to the many uses of Redstone through a medieval-themed adventure of creation, exploration, and castle besieging. Students will make mine cart tracks to help them gather resources, work together to build their kingdom, and design traps to defend their castle, all with the use of Redstone.

Students will explore the world of paper making in this weeklong program. Pirate Adventure Perfecting the College Application Essay

In this weeklong workshop, students will write a series of college application essays with the aim of completing a final essay to send out with their college application.

One-on-one feedback will be provided by the instructor. Courses A-Z Take Apart Club

Ever wonder what is inside the machines that make our life run so smoothly?

Bring your screwdrivers and goggles as we discover what simple machines lay within the more complex machines of our world. In this class, we will study simple machines and take apart household items such as keyboards, printers, coffee makers, DVD players, and more.

Time to Get Messy

Students will get messy as we create not-so-tidy science experiments, crafts, and basic cooking projects. Students will participate in activities like marble painting, splatter art, and making homemade playdough. We will also make three easy, kid-friendly recipes like homemade salsa and vegetable dip. Join us for a fun-filled and slightly messy week!

Three-Dimensional Art

Do you like working with your hands?

Creating artwork that takes up space?

Together in this weeklong program, students will explore several art materials, find inspiration through famous artists, and create amazing sculptures. We will work with a variety of art materials to create sculptures throughout the week.

Some of these materials, like paper mache or wood, may be familiar, but others may be brand new, like wire, flora foam, and panty hose. Sculpture beginners and pros alike will learn new tricks and techniques while having fun along the way.

Toy Shop

Toys have always inspired creativity in children. In this program, young engineers will learn the concepts of mechanical engineering and put these concepts into action to become expert toy makers as they design and build their very own toys. Students will build a variety of toys including an operation game, our version of a boomerang, an amazing-maze, and many more! Students will explore fundamental concepts of energy, circuits, and movement.

Join us in an apocalyptic future – one where the earth has been ravaged by a series of natural disasters. Each day, students will rely on the engineering design process to solve a series of challenges such as building a city on a series of islands, escaping from a bunker on Mt. Everest, and even building a rocket to land on the moon! Through application of engineering principles, students will solve numerous challenges as they make their virtual world of Minecraft a safe place for humanity once again.

Trip to the Rainforest

Come explore the four layers of the rainforest! From the forest floor to the emergent level, students will delve into a new layer of the rainforest each day, learning about the types of animals, bugs, and plants that are in each layer. Students will sing songs, make crafts, read about the rainforest, and even become one of the rainforest animals for a day!

Courses A-Z Welcome to Hogwarts

Hogwarts fans and budding actors will be thrilled by this theatrical experience inspired by “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Students will explore the limits of their imaginations as they learn to cast spells, brew potions, and fly on broomsticks. They will share in playing the main characters as they attempt to discover the mystery behind a trap door in a forbidden part of the castle.

Students will also create their own wands, backdrops, and other props to use in their presentation. On the final day of the program, they will share their in-class play with family and friends!

Wilson Tennis Camp

The long-running and popular Wellington tennis camp is partnering with Wilson Tennis, the #1 brand in tennis, to form the Wilson Tennis Camp. The camp is a great offering for young players to learn the game. The camp offers topflight instruction emphasizing tennis fundamentals and swing technique as well as drills and tennis games to ensure a good mixture of learning and fun. Campers are grouped by age and ability and each level works at a pace commensurate with their needs. Students should bring a racket, sunscreen, and water bottle for a great week of fun and tennis. Wilson tennis will provide t-shirts and prizes for all campers.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Color! Students will explore the beautiful colors all around us through books, songs, literacy and math themed games, and colorful experiments! We will also create our own colorful works of art to take home each day. We are looking forward to a colorful and exciting week of fun, learning, and exploration together.

Zoology

Do you love animals? Zoologists are scientists who study animals and their behavior. Students will meet live animals, care for them, design terrariums, examine their behaviors, and prepare their diets.

Observe how they interact, change, and grow. Become a Zoologist in the science lab as students investigate, touch, care for, and learn about unique arthropods, reptiles, fish, and amphibians!

Youth Tennis

Tennis is a lifetime sport that can teach young athletes mental toughness and hand-eye coordination, and build their confidence. This camp is designed for the beginner to intermediate player, and will teach the fundamentals of the game, court movement, proper grips, and stroke development. We will also emphasize the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship, all in a fun, positive environment. Students should bring a racket, filled water bottles, and sunscreen for a day of fun and learning.
