10th annual Career Preparation Day to be hosted next week By Marc Ramirez news editor

wiu.edu

Career Preparation Day Coordinator Stacey Macchi gets ready to host the 10th annual event.

Oct. 16 will mark the 10 year anniversary of the Department of Communication’s annual Career Preparation Day hosted in the University Union.   The one-day conference created by full-time faculty member Cynthia Ridle and assistant professor Stacey Macchi to help communication majors and minors prepare for their careers and lives beyond college. Western alumni will conduct various workshops to help students learn how to do an interview effectively and how to properly conduct a job search. These alumni have come back year after year to help put on the event.   The day starts with registration outside of the Grand Ballroom and a welcome from the Department of Communication chairman Peter Jorgensen at 8 a.m.   “Career Preparation Day is a

multifaceted event designed to celebrate the successes of our alumni, to explore the promise of satisfying careers in Communication, and to provide our undergraduate students with opportunities to take advantage of the enormous flexibility of the Communication degree,” Jorgensen said. “It is a time to connect with alumni, develop professional networks, and to help our students understand what kinds of career options are available to them as well as how to compete for those positions.”   Workshops this year include Social Media 101, Surviving the 1st Day of Work and Fighting for a Seat at the Table among others.   The Keynote speaker for the 2018 Career Preparation Day will be Mike Gerrish. Gerrish currently serves as the Vice President of Marketing at the Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield. His speech is centered on helping students

“Build Your Brand." Gerrish earned both his Bachelors and Masters degree in Communication from Western in 1997 and 1999.  “Talking Tough, How to Choose a Career and The Forward 5” will be the topic of the afternoon session. Among that will be a resume workshop and a Western Top Model Fashion Show of what and what not to wear to an interview, which are the two most popular breakout sessions. The day will end with a networking and dessert social.  “This day has become the Department of Communication’s largest event and is a success because of generous donations from the Department of Communication alumni,” Macchi said in an email to the Western Courier.  If anyone has question in regards to the Career Preparation Day, contact the Career Preparation Day Coordinator Stacey Macchi at SM-Macchi@wiu.edu.

Pi Kappa Phi travels to Iowa to impact the lives of people with disabilites By Marc Ramirez news editor

“Exceptional Leaders, Uncommon Opportunities” reads the tagline of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. Thirteen members and associate members traveled three and a half hours to Des Moines, Iowa to complete constructionlike tasks to better the recreational lives of people with disabilities.   The 13 Western Illinois University students traveled to Easterseals- Camp Sunnyside and spent three days and two nights there. Easterseals provides opportunities for people of all ages with a range of disabilities

to achieve their full potential. Their goal is to change the way the world sees and defines disability. Easterseals have served 1.5 million people with disabilities and their families through various programs hosted.   Junior law enforcement and justice administration major Chris Scheer was chosen to facilitate the weekend trip among a pool of candidates from all across the Midwest region.  Through Pi Kappa Phi’s national philanthropy, The Ability Experience and Scheer participated in Build America. Build America is a six-week philanthropic trip where you travel to dis-

ability camps in the United States, and build accessible amenities for people living with disabilities. Having experience from this summer, he was a strong candidate and his experience was taken into consideration when choosing the events weekend project manager.   The men participated in an Ability Weekend, an event consisting of about 20 hours of work. They worked on projects ranging from constructing a ramp into a shed to help easily store camp equipment to making new benches to line the campfire pit.

Department of Economics and Decision Sciences hosts Iowa State guest speaker By Juan Casas courier staff

On Thursday, The Department of Economics & Decision Sciences at Western Illinois University held the event “Patently Risky: Framing, Innovation and Entrepreneurial Preferences” from 10-11 a.m. in Stipes Hall 121. The event was open to the public. Elizabeth Hoffman has been a professor of economics at Iowa State University since 2012, and came to Western to give a lecture and presentation. Hoffman was introduced by Mathew Spritzer, professor at Northwestern's Searle Center on Law, Regulation and Economic Growth, as a good life-long friend and emphasized her two Ph.D’s in economics and history. Hoffman also has her masters and her bachelors’ degrees in history. The event aimed at covering the results from their shared research over the effects language, and how word framing can have a patent policy and entrepreneurial incentives. “Six years ago, we came together to from a research group, Hoffman said. Their goal was to have a better understanding on pat-

ent law and its effects on entrepreneurial incentives. Their job was to experiment with the wording and framing of a lottery survey to test if there is a direct link between framing and subject responses. Her job was not easy. “I had to design experiments, and get them approved by the university review board,” Hoffman said. The review board was not accustomed to differential payments to subjects and that Hoffman and Spritzer had to go before the University Review Board and explain what differential payments were and why they had to use them to pay the Turk subjects. Amazon mechanical Turk subjects are individuals who sign up to participate in the experiment via online, since the pool of subjects is open to anyone and anywhere. The subjects tend to more closely represent the overall demographics of America as in age and level of education. Differential payments are given when subjects are working odd hours or shifts. Once the subjects for the experiment had been selected, Amazon mechanical Turks instead of university students since the Turk

subjects where more representative of the American population regarding age and education. The experiment consisted of various questions on whether the subjects would gamble in a lottery. The point was to see if wording and framing of the questions asked would have an effect of subject answers. The first set of questions where labeled as simple.   “Choose Option A and keep $8 or choose option B and have a 1/3 chance of winning $30 and a 2/3 chance of only earning $3,” the question read. The responses were then compared to the differently framed questions labeled investment. “Choose to keep $8 or invest in a new technology with a chance of gaining $30 but with the risk of only making $3,” the second question read. Overall, the experiment showed that wording did indeed have an impact and that the Amazon mechanical Turks risk taking behavior was slightly more risk averse on average. Indeed, as explained in Hoffman’s closing arguments, innovation frame induces much more risk acceptance, both in lab and on MT Turks.

“I really enjoyed building the amenities needed for the camp to have fun time at camp,” senior Dustin Brown said.  The men worked through 50-degree weather and rain to make sure the camp would be able to have updated facilities and to ensure they would be ready to close camp by the time worse weather hit. In the evenings they would join in on programming with campers to help with inclusion of people with all abilities. The group participated in events like relay races, building birdhouses, pool parties and watching movies with campers. “Many people tend to look at peoples disabilities and things that they can’t do,”

A prominent dance group and product of “America’s Got Talent” will perform at Western Illinois University. Western's Union Grand Ballroom will host the dance group “Catapult Entertainment” on Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Catapult is a collaborative dance group who offers original shadow performances for concerts, commercials or corporate settings. Previously, the group worked alongside companies like UPS, the YMCA and Girl Scouts of America. Adam Battelstein is responsible for creating the group back in 2008. Prior to starting Catapult, Battelstein spent nearly two decades with Pilobolus, a dance company recognized all around the world. Fans may recognize him from his days performing and directing on “The Oprah Show,” the Academy Awards and at Carnegie Hall. After auditioning in Season 8 of “America’s Got Talent,” the group received a standing ovation, and each of the show’s four judges voted to put the group through to the next round. Catapult advanced and passed the quarterfinals and semifinals, before being eliminated as one of the final 12 acts. Although the group fell short of winning, “America’s Got Talent” helped bring more attention and notoriety their way.

Per the group’s website, Battelstein believes creativity is the group’s strength. “The most important thing is that Catapult goes to work for you, I go to work for you,” Battelstein said. “I bring my experience, my sense of imagination and humor to your project.” Before Oct. 22, the group will perform for the Youth Performance Arts Series, which allows local children to experience different variations of art on Western’s campus. Their performance in Macomb will conclude their twostop trip in the state of Illinois; they will appear at the Egyptian Theatre in Dekalb, Ill. on Oct. 20. Catapult’s tour schedule shows that the group has booked 50 performances from now through March 2019. For those interested in attending the performance, prices are $15 for members of the public, $10 for senior citizens, children and faculty members at Western. Students who attend Western may attend for free if they provide their student ID. Tickets are sold at westernpresents.com. Battelstein stresses that the group maintains a strong presence on stage. “Even though you may not have heard of them, they currently dance on Broadway, at the Met, on stages and film festivals around the world,” he said.

LGBTQ+ community overlooked at western

JIMMYPIERSON/PRODUCTION MANAGER

On our own campus at Western Illinois University, there are so many issues that no one is addressing. As someone who is a part of the LGBTQ+ community, it enrages me that there are still issues with hate in 2018 and on my own college campus. A few other things that need to be brought to light is the rape culture on campus and the privilege that is so prominent. The LGBTQ+ community is just as much a part of Western

as any other student, which means their needs need to be met just as much as anyone else. I have a close friend who has had so many issues with hate since he came to Western. There have been incidents where he has had hate speech spat at him during class. He described to me how he went about getting this situation dealt with. He told me that the professor sat idly by, and when he went to higher authorities at the University, nothing

was done to the students. This causes so many issues because not only are students spreading hate, the faculty is helping fuel the fire as well. This should not be the environment of a college campus where the soul purpose is to educate and open minds. Higher faculty should have done something about this situation, and they need to punish students and faculty for spreading hate in our college community. Another issue that needs to be addressed is the rape culture and the privilege issue on campus. Since the beginning of this semester, there have been three reports of sexual assaults on campus. This has been a very widespread issue across the

country as of late. Something that goes hand in hand with this is privilege. People who believe they have more rights than others are the issue here. While we have plenty of resources on campus to prevent these kinds of crimes, there needs to be more done about it. We need to educate everyone on sexual assault. There needs to be self-defense classes at the rec center for anyone who feels they could use them. The emergency buttons on campus need to be increased so people who are in trouble have easier access. People who are a part of Greek organizations, athletics, etc. typically get looked over when it comes to punishments; this needs to stop.

This is a privilege that needs to be taken very seriously and hopefully stopped. After learning about these incidents, campus feels so corrupt and disgusting. I truly hope this is something the higher faculty will take into consideration when figuring out how to better the college and community. I also hope that in the future, our students will stand up for one another instead of standing idly by. If you see something, say something; it could literally save someone’s life. I hope the LGBTQ+ community can believe there are people who stand behind us, as well as sexual assault victims. We stand with you, and we are here for you.

Safety policies are helpful but also harmful

As we learn more about safety and health risks, we are seeing more and more health and safety practices. We’re seeing it now in business, medicine, sports and even retail. Most safety measures are meant to promote safety and encourage people to be healthier and avoid injuries. But with all the good they do, there are negative consequences that go along with them, as well. One of the biggest pushes of safety that we are seeing on a weekly basis now is in the

NFL. The NFL has been promoting more and more safety policies over the years as new issues arise and the league is rampant with criticism. A lot of rules have been implemented following issues or concerns from the community. It started with tackles leading with the head being banned to prevent concussions and neck injuries, which was a safe move by the league. Many retired players have developed head injuries after retirement from tackles leading with the head, so this was

a good policy all around. Some of the later policies were a little more questionable. A lot of criticism that the NFL received in the last couple years is that some of their safety policies aren't in the best interest of all of the players, but only specific ones. After a quarterback suffered a leg injury while being sacked, the NFL made hitting a quarterback below the waist a penalty. Last year when Aaron Rodgers was hurt when a defensive player fell on him, they made a new rule that defensive players couldn't put their weight on quarterbacks when tackling them. While these are policies that promote safety, they cause more issues than solutions. Bigger defensive play-

ers have a harder time adjusting and stretching their bodies to avoid making an illegal hit. One major defensive player in the league has already torn their ACL trying to make the hit and is out for the season. These policies prioritize specific players and actually put other players in risk of injury. Safety policies shouldn't prioritize specific people while putting others at risk. If a policy puts others in a bigger risk of injury, it's not really a safety policy at that point. Another big problem that we see in the business and work industries is the combination of safety policies and the legal terms. Some safety policies aren't necessarily for promoting safety, but for covering the company's bases. Some

Write for Opinions

retail stores have policies that recommend that employees come early to their shift and stretch if they may be doing heavy lifting. That way, they can make the argument that if the employee gets hurt at work and didn't do the stretches, the company is not responsible for paying medical bills. These policies aren't meant for employee safety at all; employees shouldn't have to come in before their shift to do anything if they're not clocked in. If they are doing something for the company and it is encouraged by the company, they should be getting paid for it. While safety policies are supposed to help people, they need to be fixed so they actually serve their purpose.

COMING 2018 Halloween Release from E1

All early reports of this movie tell us that we should ignore everything that we have seen in all of the other Halloween movies, except for the first one. This has caused some controversy, and I myself find it rather odd that they would do something like this. The Halloween franchise has taken many twists and turns in the movie series pasts. One of the main characters Laurie Strode even died in two of them! Fan favorite Jamie Lee Curtis returns in this movie as Strode.

Fans of the movie know Strode as the lone survivor of Michael Myers terror filled tirade. The previous movies have Strode always trying to get away from Myers and never being prepared for the imminent attacks. This movie looks different. The previews for the movie show a motivated and fortified Strode ready to take on Myers. Some of the brief scenes shown, are Strode doing some firearms training and the other of where she clearly states that she is ready if Michael escapes again, giving this version is an interesting twist. The question that everybody

wants to know is how did Myers escape this time? Early reports say that the movie starts off 40 years after the original movie. Myers is in prison, and is being visited by a cast from a TV show that is documenting his crimes and making a show about them. Myers takes advantage of this and escapes only with one target in mind. The movies that happened after the first original movie always portrayed Strode as Meyer ’s long lost sister, and in doing this they gave the audience a reason for Myers to come after Strode. The previews for this movie insinuate that Strode is in fact

JIMMY PIERSON: PRODUCTION MANAGER

not related to Myers, and this myth was one that was made up to give the crime more of a family feel that people could relate to. Horror movie fans such as myself have been looking forward to this release since the release of the last Halloween movie. This version is from Blumhouse Productions, and they have been known to make some good horror movies such as “The Purge” and “Get Out.” So be sure to mark your calendars and grab your horror movie loving friends, and get on out to the theatres for what is sure to be a fantastic film!

The sound on this record is very similar to his selftitled debut album. “Take Me Back” is the first song on the album. Half of it is an intro, and the percussion reminds me of “September” by St. Lucia. “Under The Sun” is a song with a happy tune. It’s good to dance to. Roosevelt’s sound is a lot like your typi-

cal pop musicians, but better because he uses analog synthesizers, thus mixing electronica with pop. It’s funky, and there is an 80’s vibe within his music. His music is good for road trips, especially the next track “Yr Love,” which has got to be my favorite. There is a synth in the song that reminds me of a melody that a guitar would sound like in a 2000s rock song. I just can’t put my finger on it. Afterward, you are hit with the next track, “Illusions.”

For a second you think you’re listening to the beginning of “Don’t Bring Me Down” by Electric Light Orchestra. It has a similar percussion sequence. You are lifted into the journey that this song takes you on. He sings “All I can see, is illusions, riding through my mind.” This song reminds me of the unique sound of Tame Impala.   “Losing Touch” is the next happy tune. It’s a song about losing someone’s love and wanting to go back to the time when you had it. After that is another one of my favorites, “Pangea.” Roosevelt sings falsetto on this one, accompanied by guitar and synths. This song is awesome because it

shows off his vocal range. “Lucia” is next. This is a lot like “Colours” on his debut album. “Lucia” must’ve been about his exgirlfriend. “Better Days” is a slower song, and I can only listen to it when I am in a certain mood. “Shadows” reminds me of the general sound of Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories.” It’s funky and it has a groove. The lyrics in Roosevelt’s songs seem to serve musical purpose more than wanting to make sense. That is okay because his music is pretty good. He has a million or more monthly listeners on Spotify. The lyrics sometimes make sense, and when they do, they

seem to be about someone he lost in the past. He sings falsetto a little on “Last to Know.” “Forgive” features artist Washed Out, whose most popular song is “Feel It All Around.” The song features his voice. It’s a sad song about it being too late to turn around. Overall, this album slaps. “Getaway” is a wonderful synth-y outro. Roosevelt is an amazing pop artist and his new album “ Yo u n g Romance” is worth a listen. Marius Lauber is Roosevelt’s real name. He started in a teenage indie band called Beat!Beat!Beat!. The band disbanded later and he became a soloist.

Mega Man 11 came out last Tuesday. It is the latest iteration in the classic Mega Man series of video games. It is also a spiritual successor to the classic Mega Man series. The game looks as challenging and fun as older games of the series. I watched the Game Grumps on YouTube play it, and here are my thoughts. The game looks super hard. There are plenty of enemies to fight and hazards to dodge. Each level in the game is named after the

boss you fight at the end. The bosses in this game are Block Man, Acid Man, Blast Man, Fuse Man, Bounce Man, Torch Man, Impact Man and Tundra Man. You can select any one of these bosses in any order. The Fuse Man level looks rather difficult, because there are yellow lasers that you have to dodge while going through the level. Tundra Man’s level has fierce winds in certain areas that push you ahead or try to slow you down. Impact Man’s level

has spikes that fly across the screen you have to avoid. The game has an upgrade system and rewards you with new weapons after you complete the levels. Mega Man can only shoot his arm cannon left or right, and if you hold down the fire button, he charges up a more powerful shot. The Bounce Man level is full of trampolines and things that make you bounce around. Its interesting how the level designers designed it. However, it can be frustrating at times. The story told at the beginning goes like this. The year is 20XX. Dr. Light is a scientist who makes robots. Dr. Wily is an evil scientist who shows up and steals all of

Dr. Light’s robots and reprograms them for evil. So Mega Man has to go and defeat all the robots to win the game. The game looks really fun. It’s out for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Original Mega Man games were for NES and SNES and came out in the 80’s and 90’s. The YouTube Channel I watched the gameplay on, Game Grumps, is a show in the “let’s play” genre. The two hosts of the show, Danny and Arin, are super funny. They have been running their show since 2012 and have played many games in their time. They’ve played old Mega Man games as well as a lot of other kinds of games. You should check

them out. They joked at the beginning of their video that when certain franchises get into the “11” range, they no longer number their sequels. They joked and said this game should be called Mega Man: The Force Awakens or Mega Man: Beyond Effort. It may not be your regular big name game like “Call of Duty” or “Far Cry” but it’s good for what it is: a 2D platformer. I recommend this game because playing it can train your eye-hand coordination and motor skills so that you can go back to your other games with improved video game skills.

Macomb needs more beauty supplies stores

As an African-American female with natural hair, it would be helpful for Macomb to have more beauty supplies that are suitable for my hair type and texture with affordable prices. Growing up, there were certain products that I considered my holy-grails. My mom would use the same products every time she did my hair, depending on the hairstyle. For instance, if I was getting my hair flat-ironed, minimal prod-

uct was needed versus having to use more products for a twist-out. Those same products transitioned with me, as I got older, helping me to keep the same routine. However, now being an adult living in such a small town as Macomb, I can see I took having the convenience of having those products at my fingertips for granted, considering they aren’t in my reach until I’m able to go home again. Yes, Wal-Mart and Dollar General

are helpful when it comes to the gels and shampoos that I prefer to use, but sometimes a girl just needs those beauty supply products that bigger stores don’t have. Sally’s is useful, but who wants to pay more than eight dollars for a sample pack of deep conditioner? Not me. For someone like me who has chemically treated hair, Sally’s is great for buying hair dye as well as the other products associated with doing it safely. However, Sally’s is just too expensive for a college student like me on a frugal budget. I find myself making special requests to my family when they come to visit me, because I can’t find what I need here in Macomb, or what I’m looking for

is too expensive in the stores that are here. Yes, I can always substitute my products for the ones that are made available to me, but sometimes a girl just needs her go-to products. I have recently gone natural with my hair, and in all honesty, I don’t know exactly what I am doing. Every day I look to find a new product, hoping for better results with my hair, only to discover that it’s because I’m trying things that I know are not meant for my hair type and texture. I want to be able to do my hair with the confidence that my products will work for me and give me the results that I am looking for. Thankfully, Dollar General has acceptable prices on

their natural products because I would have to make a trip home once a month, which would not be convenient at all. I could travel to Peoria or Quincy in search of the products that I need, but again, how is that convenient? It’s sad that I wait until my senior year to voice my opinion, but I think that I’ve held it in long enough. Even before I went natural, I was still in desperate need of certain products and would find myself on Amazon, hoping that it wouldn’t cost me more than I was willing to spend for what I needed. Hopefully a change will come, because I’m sure there are others out there who feel the same way.

There is importance behind voting As we begin to embark on midterm elections, let’s take a look at voting in America: the importance of voting and the voting age. We live in a democratic society, allowing us all the opportunity to vote and voice our opinion in choosing our political leaders. As a citizen of this ‘great’ country, which I use in quotes for many reasons, it is a privilege that we are able to vote, and we should take full advantage of it. I used great in quotes because America is a good country in terms of jobs, career choices and economic supply. Yet, our country is in debt to many other countries. It is not all the time that we make sure our vulnerable populations are taken care of such as children, the elderly and war veterans. Our country is also looked down upon by other countries who are extremely stable financially. As a country, we are also working on trying to stop many epidemics that we are

facing such as: gun violence, gang violence, mass shootings and the war on drugs. Besides our flaws, the US is a great country where many come to achieve the American Dream. Voting in this current era of political divide, it is imperative to make sure we all get out and vote. When we look at our political leaders on all levels, from local to federal, we see that is indeed time for change, immediate change! The midterm elections are extremely vital; it is the time where we are able to begin to ‘reverse’ our leaders’ views. When leaders see that many citizens are seeking other candidates during the middle of their term, it will speak volumes to them. Political officials begin to realize that they are not producing what they need to be producing for their citizens. When we see and hear leaders blatantly disregarding their office and doing things that we would’ve never

imangined them doing, it’s time for change. We have leaders who are giving us one message about change and doing the total opposite. We have leaders disregarding the press and the citizens, and lacking self-respect and respect for others. When we see the highest office in the country condemning women, different religions and other groups of people, it’s time that we, as a country, come together and seek change. Voting is our chance as citizens to say enough is enough, we are fed up and we need change immediately. Every vote matters and is a step closer to receiving change. We always talk amongst ourselves, as citizens, about how we are tired of current leaders, but we must be willing to take action. Having us come together to vote an official out of office speaks volume to us as citizens, it speaks volume to other countries and it speaks volume to that specific leader. Being voted out of your position shows that you were not adequately doing your job and we need someone who is willing to complete the task at hand. Let us all be advocates for our country and take part in our civil duty of voting.

CHARLESTON, Ill — The Purple and Gold looked to capture their first road victory of the season when they headed to Eastern Illinois University in preparation for their Saturday afternoon matchup. They fell to the Panthers 1-0 and now move on to a season record of 2-7-3 and are 0-1-1 in Summit League play. Eastern now moves on to 3-6-3 in the season and 1-0-1 in conference play. This conference game was vital to this team and coaching staff considering the kind of impact that it could have in the conference’s standings. Director of Soccer, Eric Johnson, spoke on the matter, emphasizing the importance of a win in this one. “Critical road game for the Leathernecks,” Johnson said. “Both teams are sitting on one point, so this is a real swing game for the standings. Eastern Illinois drew Denver at home with a great defensive effort and shutout, so we will have to be sharp and on our game to get the win.” This was a contest dominated by defense. Sophomore midfielder Paul Kirdorf in the 21st minute and senior midfielder Daniel Kadima in the 26th minute both challenged the Eastern Illinois goalkeep-

er with their shots, but were unable to find the back of the net. Goalkeeper for the Purple and Gold, junior Tim Trilk, also did a fine job of his own by keeping his team tied in a scoreless match up through one half. Defense highlighted the second half as well, as both of these squads were relatively quiet. The 87th minute of the contest saw sophomore midfielder Luke Duball take what was arguably the team’s best look they had seen all game, but failed to get past the Panthers’ goalie. The game took a dive into overtime as regulation ended play in a scoreless battle. Both Kadima and Kirdorf were able to manage decent looks on their shot attempts, but both of these attempts were ultimately controlled by the Panthers’ goalie. The scoreless affair ended on the 106th minute on a shot from the top of the box by Christian Sosnowski that rebounded from a defender and into the back of the net for the golden goal. For the Purple and Gold, this was their first Summit League loss of the season. Currently sitting at 2-7-3, they’ll look to rebound in a big way when they face the University of Nebraska- Omaha at home this on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.

LAS VEGAS — Tensions ran high on Saturday night at the UFC 229 pay-per-view event. No one expected hell to break loose after “The Notorious” Conor McGregor (21-4) tapped out to a rear naked choke, thanks to Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov (27-0) in the fourth round. What should’ve been a triumphant night for Nurmagomedov turned out to have so much backlash that news for this event will continue to surface throughout the week. Silence was golden prior to the matchup of a century. When the event began, fans all got out of their seats with their phones in hand, waiting to take video or pictures of the long anticipated fight. The arena went dark with only fog and a green light representing one of the three colors of Ireland. You hear an Irish song play, the haunting voice of the young woman gives fans like myself goosebumps. After the song is played, a camera shot followed McGregor heading towards the octagon to The Notorious B.I.G. song “Hypnotize.” Fans were going ballistic. You could hear chants, cheers, and screams. When the camera shot back at McGregor making his way to the ring, he said, “it’s good to be home.” Fans continued to express their love for the guy even after he danced around the ring and did his famous stride he always does, hinting to The Eagle that he

high rating score from the judges. In the earlier part of round two, Nurmagomedov lands a monsterous right hand at The Notorious. Not too long after, The Eagle goes for a takedown, giving him the chances to crawl on top of the former champion and to throw some very heavy punches. While knocking McGregor’s headlights out, he kept yelling out some obscene stuff, which no was able to pick up. With 45 seconds remaining in the round, McGregor was able to pull himself up, but barely. Round three showed both men on their feet for a period of time to being on their feet. McGregor had a chance to land a left hook, but his stamina and conditioning was not up to par for him to have the energy to do so. With only a minute left in the round, Nurmagomedov goes in for a takedown again, but this time, McGregor doesn’t fall prey. Instead, he was able to get a few strikes in, but not enough. Fourth round was the final one. The first minute was controlled by the Irishman in the center of the cage. The Eagle went in again for a takedown and was successful. The crowd was not pleased because they know their former beloved champ was in trouble. Nurmagomedov locked it in, the rear naked choke. McGregor had a look in his eye that he knew he had been defeated and that the fight in him cannot last another round, so he softly tapped. Nurmagomedov pulled out another victorious win, and remained undefeated with a 27-0 record. You’d think that Khabib, after winning the fight, would go and

UFC 229 ends in abrupt chaos is ready to take this six months of chaos and end it right within the five rounds they were given for the night. For Khabib Nurmagomedov, his country's flag (Russia), displayed on the big screen and the happiness that fans of McGregor’s showed five minutes ago, turned into pure hate for the current champ. Like McGregor, The Eagle’s theme song was one from his homeland. It was slow, yet enchanting. When the camera showed him and his team walking out towards the octagon, you see him mutter what looks like a prayer. Fans did not hesitate to boo and taunt the current UFC Lightweight champion. Once both men were in the ring and the announcements were out of the way, the referee of the event told both men if they wanted to touch gloves, as of code of honor, now was the time to do it. Both men refused and instead gave each other death stares that we previously saw during their press conferences that lead up to the event. The stipulation of the match was meant to be five rounds, five minutes each. Round one fully belonged to Nurmagomedov. It wasn’t long until The Eagle had McGregor down on the ground and locked up his legs, making it harder for the Irishman to try to worm his way out. McGregor lands a few soft shots to Nurmagomedov’s back, but not enough to pull a

hug his teammates and maybe dance around the cage right? Not even close. The next thing that people see is The Eagle throwing his mouthpiece and going over to the other side of the cage yelling at someone. His rage got the best of him, and he climbed over the cage into the audience to attack McGregor’s jiu jitsu coach, Dillon Danis. Meanwhile, McGregor was sitting up in the ring, and all of the sudden a few of Khabib’s friends or teammates made their way up into the ring and came in attacking The Notorious. If you watch the video of this scene, it looks like McGregor landed the first punch at them before they were able to attack him. The camera went back out to find Khabib, and the brawl between him and Danis was happening within the audience. Fans were getting up out of their seats, afraid they were going to get the smackdown of a lifetime from either one of them. The Governor of Nevada was in attendance for the event and ran out of there as fast as he could. It shouldn’t come as a shocker that this post-fight brawl was going to happen. For six months, McGregor was slandering Nurmagomedov’s name, his family, religion, and background. So it was only a matter of time before The Eagle was going to let loose. When UFC president Dana White brought Khabib back into the ring, he told him that it was not a good idea to put the title back on his waist, due to how the fans were reacting to him, and after the slug fest that happened, fans were even more upset to the point of rioting. Police and secu-

rity escorted Nurmagomedov, and long and behold when he was leaving, fans were throwing their drink cups at him. An hour and a half passed before a live stream of the postfight press conference occurred. A very distraught White came in and told the press how disappointed he was with how the fight ended, and at this moment it’s up to the Nevada State Commission to decide how they were going to go about punishing the champion. In addition, he added that another brawl broke out after the cameras stopped filming. Three of The Eagle’s teammates were supposed to be arrested after attacking McGregor, but the Irishman had a soft heart and said he was not going to press charges on those guys. The highlight of the night was when a Russian reporter asked White “are you going to make a rematch? Because that would be very funny.” Neither a smile nor a chuckle came from White about that. The last person to make an appearance was Khabib himself. He started off the interview by apologizing for his actions. He then went on to add that he felt McGregor’s actions back in April with the bus incident were far worse than what he did after the match. He discussed that he is tired of guys like McGregor throwing out personal verbal attacks, yet looking like an angel to White and the UFC. One thing he did mention that made his night was that Russian President, Vladimir Putin, congradulated The Eagle for his well established win over McGregor.

Football falls short to conference foe

Sean McGuire carries the ball as a Redbirds' defender approaches his backside.

NORMAL, Ill. — The Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks now move to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference after coming up short against the Illinois State University Redbirds. The final score of the game was 33-16, ISU now moves on to a season record of 4-1 and a conference record of 1-1. The Purple and Gold were first on the board after senior quarterback Sean McGuire threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Tony Tate. H o w e v e r, kicker Sam Crosa’s kick was blocked and ran down to the Sam end zone. The Crosa Leathernecks led by a score of 6-2 for the remainder of the first quarter. Illinois State was first on

the board in the second quarter driving 46 yards in seven plays. Running back James Robinson ran the ball in for a touchdown with 10:15 left in the second quarter putting them in the lead, 9-6. Kicker JT Bolhken of the Redbirds then nailed a 22-yard field goal to strengthen the Redbirds’ lead by a score of 12-6 with 3:59 remaining in the first half. With about a minute left, McGuire threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Steve McShane to give a 13-12 lead going into halftime. The action started with less than 10 minutes left in the third quarter when McGuire threw a 71-yard pass to Tate. Tate was brought down at the 8-yard line, but the Redbirds’ defense held Western to a field goal. The score was then 16-12. Those were the only points scored for the reminder of the third quarter. “Field position was no question one of the factors of this game, but that's a credit to Illinois State,” head coach Jared Elliott said. “We

had some opportunities in the third quarter but didn't take advantage of them. Offensively, we have to be more consistent. We have got to do a better job on first and second downs; we're giving up way too many third and longs, and that makes it hard to convert and stay on the field. Illinois State had some adjustments for us and were able to apply some pressure without having to pressure. We'll get back and figure out some of the ways and things that we need to do to help our young offensive line out and protect Sean and give us a chance.” Unfortunately, the fourth quarter brought a different story and Illinois State captured the win with 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Illinois State has now won eight of the last nine games against Western Illinois. Despite the conference loss, this was a record-breaking game for McGuire. He made history at Hancock Stadium by becoming the Leathernecks’ all-time leader

in both passing yards and touchdowns. He surpassed the previous record holder, Paul Singer, who played between 1985 and 1988.

“This guy continues to get better and better,” Elliot said. “He's a very unique and special young man, and I've never coached anyone like him.”

Senior punter Adam Fellner also put some numbers up. He recorded 407 punting yards, which Adam was the most of Fellner his career. He is also ranked second in the conference with a total of 609 total yards on the season. Ahead of him is Bohlken (ISU) with 766 yards. Senior linebacker Quentin Moon is the M i s s o u r i Valley Football Conference Quentin leader in Moon forced fumbles

and holds a top spot in the rankings with 21 total tackles on the season.

“We've got some special kids, and I cannot be more proud of them,” Elliott said. “Even after tough loses where it hurts the most. The effort and how these guys compete and fight; we'll heal from the hurt, 24-hour rule, and we'll move on and get better.”

The Purple and Gold will continue their conference play as they face North Dakota State University on Saturday. The Bison were the 2017 National Champions, they are currently 5-0 on the season (2-0 MVFC). Their most recent win is over the Missouri Valley Football Conference foe, the University of Northern Iowa, who they defeated 56-31. The Purple and Gold will need all the support they can get so come out for the game on Hanson Field or tune into ESPN+ to watch. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
