Western Livestock judging team finishes first at National Western Stock Show. By Tyler Moseberry courier staff
The Western Illinois University Livestock judging team finished first at The National Western Stock Show. This win marks another in a long history of competing as one of the top-five nationally competitive judging teams. The show consists of classes (livestock) and reasons. Our placement was swine (third), sheep and goats (first), cattle (third), reasons (third), carload judging contest (fourth) and first overall. Coaches Mark Hoge and Hayden Wilder are extremely proud of the team. He talked about the amazing work ethic and practice the team had put in the past month. “It marks the first time that the WIU judging team has won Denver in many, many years,” Wilder said in an interview with WIU News. At practice, the judging team studied the industry concepts and the different types of livestock. The judges who were evaluating the livestock, were the same judges who were a part of the overall competition. That way the teams were more familiar about the livestock and the expectations required of them in

the competitions. The reasons room encourages and promotes creativity and progressive concepts in terms of describing the livestock. Travelling is a must for this team, and it allows for the teams to bond and get
to know one another. The superintendent has complete charge of the contest. He/She must make sure all the rules and regulations are carried out with fairness and justice. The superintendent also decides all questions,
which may arise with the interpretation of the rules. A Committee of Officials then select and place all classes and score all reasons. The officials decide which classes require reasons. As far as rooting for the team goes, it may be
a little difficult if you do not know the members, as uniforms and school colors are prohibited to avoid bias.

Western wins Google challenge money By Karla Foster courier staff
Can you smell that? The scent of fresh air and the soft cut green grass. Another thing that also smells is the sackload of cash to the Illinois Institute of Rural Affairs (IIRA) for completing the Google Impact Challenge. The Google Impact Challenge is a competition from Google in which individuals compete to help improve their community. It could be doing things like planting flowers in a deserted area in the city, or providing technological advancements in poor communities to enhance their lives. Whoever can provide the best efforts wins a great amount of money to either continue the great things that they are doing, give to others or keep it for themselves, but that kind of defeats the purpose. Google also organizes other challenges and activities, which can be found on their website. The IIRA won this challenge and was rewarded with a $75,000 prize, which could go up to about $250,000.The IIRA provides support with technology, helps with research, evaluation and training across the state of Illinois. The main focus is to help the rural areas around the state. They partner with public and private agencies in order to help the people in these areas. The program started in 1986, where a task force conducted a set of 25 hearings. One in par-

ticular was for a department in which it could help study and improve rural areas. Three years later, the IIRA was created and has been an improvement ever since. The way farm life was in Illinois then is way different than it is now. The main eight issues they work on are: economic development, value, education, health care, transportation, public management, housing and information on technology. Focusing on these aspects can help the rural parts of Illinois improve their farm life. The IIRA can use the money to provide stable homes for farmers. They can provide trucks and other vehicles to help transport goods to local businesses or super markets. They can also help Western’s agriculture program. There also could be a way to bring in pesticides to help farmers with their crops, unless they are organic. With this wonderful achievement made by the IIRA, we hope that when they have received their money, they will use it for a good cause. Whether it’s for supporting local farmers by helping them get the best fertilizer, fixing their pipelines so they can get clean water or help build greenhouses so they can help increase the quality of plants, it’s certain that they have some projects that they want to take care of. If you want to learn more about the IIRA you can visit their website at www.iira.org.

Contestants cannot confer among each other or anyone else unless directed to do so while the contest is in progress. Each animal is designated by numbers 1-2-3-4. Each species includes a minimum of one market class individual performance information are provided for one swine and beef breeding class. This, along with subjective appraisal, will be used to calculate placing. Contestants are allowed 15 minutes to place each class with a two-minute time warning. Ratings are based on a score of up to 50 points for placing each ring provided by the superintendent and 50 points for each set of reasons which is based on their notes, but cannot be used while presenting them to officials. In total there are 12 classes to be placed and eight sets of reasons to
be given, meaning there are 1,000 points possible per contestant. This is not only a lot of points, but a lot of information and practice required. Then the team ranking is determined by the added scores of the team’s individuals. In the event of a tie, multiple tiebreakers are in place for who has the better score. The first are species reasons, second is an overall reason, third is the lower total placing score within species or overall and fourth is “Flip of the coin.” This is all because awards are not duplicated and there must be a winner. The team will look to continue to study and practice time management which is important when they can have up to 20 hours a week of judging. The skills learned and practiced during these events are invaluable as many Western alumni’s continue into graduate and medical school.

It is okay to live with your best friends Going into college I never would have thought that I would be able to live with my best friends. I was always told that it was not a good idea because it can ruin your friendship. Luckily I did not listen to what people told me and I am having the time of my life. Last year, I met the most amazing people who became my best friends. I was blessed and somehow ended up living with one and having the other two right across the hall; it all fell into place and almost
seemed unreal. When it came time to do housing renewals we brought up the idea of living in a suite. We had no idea how much was in store, but we made the right decision even though we were a little hesitant. We basically lived in each others rooms when we lived in the freshman dorms but it became a whole new situation when we shared three rooms. There are challenges that come with living with three other girls, but we have always been able
to figure it out. The biggest challenge we have is keeping the room clean. In our suite we have two bunk beds in one room and then all of our closets are in another room. Our middle room is used as an entertainment space, but it can get dirty really quick. We do not always agree on how to handle situations but when you have roommates, you have to respect their space and hope they respect yours as well. Now, we have had our problems; I would say that every week we have something new to conquer together. Normally I am the roommate that forgets to pick up after myself, and I catch a great deal of grief from that because it disrupts everyone else's space.
Our privacy vs. national security Drawing a definite line to determine what is more important between our privacy and national security is very debatable. Our privacy is being able to keep and access the Internet without the government being able to infringe upon it. Our national security is having adequate armed security that will keep this country safe; on the borders, in the air, in the water and on land. In our present world, everything is online and we have access to any information at the tips of our fingers. When we’re locked out of certain websites, we can go to the “cloud” to retrieve that information. This current age of technology has also been the age of counter-terrorism. Both our privacy and national security is very important and we
need both but our national security as a country is the most important. Privacy is important to keep your information to yourself and national security helps the nation keeps its sanity in regards to safety. Our national security and national armed forces are the most vital and should be kept important. National security lowers the risk of terrorist events like 9/11. Like stated earlier, our privacy on the Net is already being stalked and looked upon by the government. When random scam callers, bill collectors and companies call to ask for money, it shows our information is being shared. When we have data breaches in great big corporations like Target, we as the citizens of this country should see that our right of privacy is limited. Due to our
government already infringing upon our privacy rights, we need to boost up our national security. The most important job of our government is to secure the general welfare of their citizens. Security is a common good that’s promised to all Americans and it must outweigh any personal concerns about privacy. Under our national security we have and need surveillance watch and this watch is the secret watching of private activities. In our new era of technology, security agents have the technology to help monitor technology against terrorism. Tighter security controls at airports and borders will help prevent attacks and loss of life. Such measures could include more intrusive scanning, body searches, watch lists, etc. In addition to their deterrence effect, they will enable officials to stop attacks as they are happening. Therefore, we as a country need to focus on our national security.
But I am always kindly reminded to pick things up and I do. It is all about being able to work with each other even when things are hard or annoying. Communication is key in any relationship, and that goes for your friends as well. With housing renewal stuff for next semester coming up, I hope that everyone chooses to live with their best friends. There may be problems but if you are truly best friends there isn’t anything you can’t figure out. Because I chose to take a leap of faith, I have gotten so much closer to the women I call my best friends, and I have also learned how I can be a better person and roommate.

The stunning teaser trailer for one of Disney’s next up and coming films, “Frozen 2,” was released last week on the day before Valentine’s Day. This trailer was visibly different in intensity and overall mood than any viewers have seen from “Frozen” in the past. After this trailer was released, the Internet erupted quickly with ideas of what the new film may be about, many theories began to flood the minds of Disney fans across the nation. Within 24 hours of the release of the teaser trailer, it had acquired 116.4 million views. This high number of views in such a short amount of time crowned the trailer for “Frozen 2” the most viewed animated trailer of all time, which was announced by Disney on Twitter. This huge news for Frozen and Disney alike has fans even more excited for the films actual trailer release, or the release of the movie on Nov. 22, 2019.

Frozen II trailer leaves fans wondering
Diving into the storyline of the trailer, quite literally, the viewer is brought from a black screen to a desolate image of Elsa standing on a beach. The waves crash onto the dark black pebbles of the beach. Elsa is staring intensely at the water, a deep mist and stormy sky seen behind her. Elsa’s face becomes determined as she takes off her jacket and shoes, throws her hair into a ponytail and charges the water. As Elsa meets the crisp shore, ice forms beneath her feet, allowing her to to walk on the water. Elsa does what she can to race up a giant oncoming wave, but it crashes over her. Viewers then see Elsa racing at the water again, this time diving through a wave, climbing onto a large, black boulder, and using her icy powers attempting to freeze over a monstrous wave. Unfortunately, this attempt falls short as the wave breaks over Elsa again, engulfing her in the waves and bringing her back to shore. The trailer then shifts focus to Kristoff, who is riding on
Sven through a sea of autumn trees, in a what appears a much lighter place than where viewers left Elsa. Kristoff’s face is intense, and there appears to be an “army” of more reindeer, all charging with Kristoff and Sven. The trailer
wikipedia.com
cuts to Anna, in an extremely dark and isolated area, clutching onto something. Viewers then watch as Anna climbs up giant black rocks, begins to run toward a ledge and just as she leaps into the air, viewers are taken back to Elsa who is
now with Olaf. In this clip, Elsa is trying to contain what appears to be a purple fire, blazing around herself and Olaf in the shape of a heart, but even her magic cannot calm the flames. Then there is a scene in a similar autumn
forest where viewer’s last saw Kristoff, with two new characters who encounter some type of magical force in the forest, the leaves lifting one of them up into the air. Finally, viewers are brought to a shot of Elsa, Anna and Kristoff standing together. As the shot pans outward, it is evident that they are standing on a ledge, overlooking a beautiful forest of red and gold, with Olaf and Sven by their sides. The trailer ends with autumn leaves flying around the Frozen logo, indicating the significance this new setting will play in the animated film. This teaser trailer poses many different questions for fans; where is this dark and ominous place that Elsa and Anna are seen? Who are these new characters? What is this new magical force, or rather, who has these new magical powers? Unfortunately, it will be a while for anyone to receive any of these answers, but one thing is for sure, Nov. 22 can't come soon enough.

Nintendo introduces new features to the Switch and 3DS Nintendo is at it again with their Nintendo Direct video on YouTube, showcasing all kinds of new games for the Nintendo Switch and their handheld system, the 3DS. I’ll highlight my favorite trailers from the video. First, the popular game where you can create your own Mario levels, Super Mario Maker, is getting a sequel for the Nintendo Switch. It looks like you can edit a lot more of Mario games from the past 30 years. This is exciting be-
cause people will unleash their creativity in new ways with Mario. Super Smash Bros is getting an update. Yoshi’s Crafted World is an upcoming game, with the lovable dinosaur Yoshi going through levels that look like arts and crafts projects. There is a new Tetris game called Tetris 99, which you compete with 99 other players to see who can survive a game of Tetris the longest. It shows everyone who is playing online and what their
Tetris screen looks like. Whoever plays Tetris the longest wins this. People are calling it the Battle Royale of Tetris. Grid Autosport is coming to Nintendo Switch. It’s a realistic racing game. The Game Boy Color game, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, is being remastered and remade with today’s graphics. It looks amazing. Nintendo remade A Link to the Past for the 3DS a couple of years ago called A Link Between Worlds. This Nintendo Direct was full of content and exciting trailers. For example, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker looks cool; it’s a game starring the mushroom head character Toad.
He goes on adventures in miniature worlds. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a sequel to a game I played called Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. It’s a Castlevania-like game with modern graphics this time. From the creator of Undertale comes a new game called Deltarune. It’s got something to do with dogs. A lot of the trailers in this video were about things I didn’t care about, but I’ll talk about those things anyway. There’s an upcoming game called Box Boy and Box Girl, a puzzle game in which you create boxes to solve puzzle levels. To me, that game looks boring. There is a Minecraft
clone called Dragon Quest Builders 2. I usually don’t like it when I see a Minecraft clone being made. Apparently, Star Fox is now called StarLink: Battle for Atlas. The game looks cool, but I’ll pass. There were a lot of anime-styled games that I didn’t find interested in because I’m not an anime fan.

New Lego movie awes viewers in more way than one
I saw “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” this past weekend. Even though it’s a movie for kids, it has an important message for everyone. The whole time I was watching the film I was admiring the animation style. “The Lego Movie” and its sequel use CG that makes it look like it’s stop motion. You can’t tell which is which sometimes. That’s okay, because that’s what Lego filmmaking is all about: stop motion. When the first Lego movie’s trailer came out, people debated on social media whether or not it was going to be in stop motion. In fact, it is CG, but it’s meant to look like stop motion animation. This technique has been inspired by a lot of brick films made in the last 30 years. I watched a video on the YouTube Channel “Vox” which talked about the history of brick films; you should check that video out. My favorite brick film is a one minute re-telling of Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” called “ONE: A Space Odyssey.” Yes, I am a grown man
going to see a movie about Legos. The songs in the movie were awesome. “Everything is Awesome” makes a return as well as new favorites like “This Song’s Gonna Get Stuck Inside Your Head” and “Unbelievable Super Cool Outrageous and Amazing.” I must say these songs get stuck inside my head. While you watch this movie, keep in mind that the story is being told by a boy and his sister. The whole plot is about his sister wanting to play with him. So what she does is take some of his Lego guys and takes them to her room (referred to as the ‘SISTAR’ system by the Lego people). Their mom says that if they don’t learn how to play together, she’ll tell them to put the Legos in storage. That is the plot behind all the Lego action you see. In the end, the boy and girl learn how to play together and be nice to each other. In the first Lego movie, it was revealed that the whole movie was just a boy and his father playing with Legos in the basement of their house. Legos hold a
special place in my heart because I grew up playing with them. And now in my 20s, I realize that Legos are the most important toy for children because they encourage imagination. They also encourage adults to spend time with their kids in productive and meaningful ways. That’s what I think these Lego movies are all about. They are a reminder for parents to spend time with their children before they grow up. The Lego movie is probably something that if you see it as a kid, you’ll watch it again as an adult and see a deeper meaning. Like when you read a book as a kid and read it again as an adult, and it’s totally different. I can see this happening with “The Lego Movie” and its sequel.

If you are looking to discover new music and you like 80’s music, there is an entire new world of sound awaiting you. Synthwave is 1980’s electronic music made nowadays, or at least it started out that way. In the last 10 years, the genre has become more than that. If you’ve seen the movie “Drive” with Ryan Gosling, all the songs in that movie’s soundtrack were synthwave. Or if you like the music from “Stranger Things,” this music is for you. In this article, I’ll highlight two influential artists that have new singles out, and perhaps you’ll give it a listen. From Los Angeles comes the amazing duo The Midnight. They have released a new remix of “Clean Eyes” by Seattle-based artist SYML. The remix turns his acoustic singer-songwriter track into an 80s synthwave dance hit. People who like indie music would also appreciate the vocals. The Midnight’s music is inspired by a lot of other music like Phil Collins, the “Terminator” theme and Tangerine Dream. I feel like I’m walking through a coming-of-age film when I listen to their music. They have four albums out right now: “Days of Thunder,” “Endless Summer,” “Nocturnal” and “Kids,” which are all phenomenal and all have different themes. Another group, FM-84, from San Francisco, released their new single “Bend and Break,” which feels like a drive along the California coast while the summer sun is setting. The singer is a guy named Ollie Wride, and he puts his heart
and soul into the vocals on this track. He was featured on FM-84’s number one hit, “Running in the Night” and recently decided to join the band altogether. FM-84 has one album out called “Atlas,” which is my favorite album of synthwave. There is so much attention to detail. The best track on there is “Goodbye” which feels like the credits are rolling after a great movie. Anyway, “Bend and Break” gives this genre a new standard. It’s no longer cheesy 80s electronic, it’s straight up 80s pop. I would say it’s so good that it compares to actual 80’s music. Instead of going back in time, why not bring the past to us. You can find a lot of good synthwave on the YouTube Channel “NewRetroWave” which also has their own record label. There are a lot of artists in this genre; some other notable ones are Mitch Murder, Com Truise (yes, that’s Tom Cruise with the first letters swapped), TimeCop1983, Gunship, Kalax, Lazerhawk, Dana Jean Phoenix (who sounds like Madonna), Michael Oakley, KRISTINE, Perturbator, Tokyo Rose and Betamaxx. All these artists have a different sound to them. Synthwave is not all the same. Some people say it doesn’t have soul, but I think it does. The new singles from FM84 and The Midnight prove this, that it’s more than cheesy electronic music; it’s the 80s dream. It’s a summer long forgotten. It’s a night at the arcade with your friends. It’s a drive down the Miami coast in a Delorean car from Back to the Future.

A Bold Movie for a Divided Nation I'm going to be honest; I was having trouble thinking about what I wanted to write so I looked up trailers for upcoming movies. The movie trailer I saw was for “Unplanned.” You can call me a pessimist or a realist, but I would be shocked if this movie doesn't cause controversy. Before we get into it let me say that my thoughts on abortion are irrelevant; I am going off of the movie trailer and what the story is about. The movie will obviously have an agenda, but this review doesn't necessarily reflect anybody's
personal views. The trailer begins in the office of an obviously prolife organization based on the posters on the walls. A girl comes in and tells the guy in charge that Abby Johnson is there, much to his shock. We find out why he was surprised right away as we transition to a meeting at Planned Parenthood where they announce their employee of the year award, which is won by Johnson. It shows her becoming one of the youngest clinic directors in the nation. I should point out that this is based on a true story.

A friend or family member confronts her, who finds out that Johnson is going to be in charge of the abortions at her clinic. She believes that she is making a difference. It then transitions to her going to work and seeing protesters holding up signs. One of the protesters says she will always be a "baby killer.” We will obviously be seeing a lot of challenging situations, as we see another scene where she is talking to a different friend who thinks she has changed. She says she believes she is doing the right thing helping women in crisis. We then get to the main theme of the film, which is a poster that says, "what she saw changed everything.” We go to her office where she is talking to a girl that isn't sure if she should get
an abortion or not, she tells her "I know but the one thing that all experts agree on, and that is at this stage the fetus can't feel anything.” We then transition to Johnson being asked to go to the backroom, it then shows the look of horror on her face and later she has a breakdown. It doesn't really say what she was doing in the trailer, but based on what happened to her in real life, she watched an abortion on an ultrasound. In the trailer, she says, in an emotional wreck, that she saw it trying to fight for its life. It then shows her feeling guilty when people thank her for what she did for them. The 22,000 abortions she approved obviously weighed her down.
The last scene shows Johnson going against the company and leaving. This movie is going to be super emotional whether you agree with it or not. When a movie can make you feel that much, I will probably watch it. PureFlix, a Christian movie company is making this movie, so obviously it will be about prolife. It probably won't change anybody’s mind because true story or not, it has a bias. Pro-lifers will agree with it, but pro-choicers will not and the movie won't change people’s beliefs because some on the other side won't even watch it or wouldn't trust it as an objective source for the debate. I always think it is important to hear both sides of the argument. The movie will be released on March 29.

Adulthood can indeed be a frightening transition as we mature; however, this isn’t the time to be apprehensive about the future. Instead this is the time for optimism and self-motivation as we prepare for a future of opportunities. As many students are starting to discover their niche and creative talents, it’s rather important that we remember our goals and establish a purpose for them. It can be quite easy to put our goals, dreams and aspirations on the backburner in hopes of returning back to them once we’ve found the time to invest in them. We are adults now, and it’s crucial that we invest in ourselves in order for others to do the same. We have to take time out of our after-class nap schedules, and dining hall socials to prepare ourselves for what’s ahead. Of course what I’m recommending is time consuming, but it will all be worth it when you find yourself in a better position than your initial plan. Nothing in life

is ever promised or guaranteed. However, that doesn’t mean take your today’s for granted. Every day isn’t promised, so it’s important to make each day count for the right reasons with humility and positivity. I know how challenging it can be to acquire self-motivation when the support around you is limited. However, that should be even more of a reason to push yourself harder and farther. We tend to be our own worst critiques, making us harder on ourselves than anyone can ever get the chance to be. As we’ve gotten older, we’ve realized that being an adult isn’t as fun as it looks on TV. We can’t reverse time and go back to appreciating the naps that daycare had to offer when we were little, but I’ve also noticed that adulthood is what you make it. No, paying bills isn’t the most exciting thing, but taking on more responsibility doesn’t have to be as stressful as we make it out to be. This is the time to buckle down and get our
plans and funds in order, and I’m not talking about materialism but instead realism. Aspire to be successful, not rich because money isn’t the key to happiness in my opinion. Success is a personal endowment that you’ve invested within yourself. Yes, it may come with riches but don’t allow that to be the sole reason for wanting more. Many people often find themselves biting off more than they can chew when it comes to their personal wants and needs. A want is not a need and we have to realize that sooner than later. Seeing my friends, family and people in general do positive things is inspirational nonetheless, but we should never just stop there. This world is full of opportunities, some paid and some voluntary, but either way there are more than enough that go unnoticed. We need to do more and start planning now to get where it is that we want to get to, and not just for the money but also for the satisfaction of perseverance, determination and attainment. So here’s to the future, and remember that to give is better than to receive. Once you’ve established yourself, don’t be afraid to give back to those who you’ve inspired as well.

For Western, there were two highlights. First, Olivia Kauffman, who had 15 points, also had a steal in which she took the ball and went around the court to find a bucket. Second was the free throw shooting. Annabel Graettinger led the way with 11 free throws going perfect from the line, and as a team the Leathernecks went 19-24 on the night. Unfortunately, this will be a game in which head coach JD Gravina will learn more from the mistakes than from the accomplishments. As a team, Western shot 35 percent from the field and nine percent on 26 attempts from deep. One of the worst shooting nights this team has seen in long time, no doubt. They did not take good shots and did not have enough movement and seemed overwhelmed by their opponent. On defense, the Leathernecks did force 16 turnovers and accumulated six steals, but the matchups were too tough. Now, Western looks forward to their remaining schedule as the Summit League Tournament looms. Two years ago, Western won that tournament and are eager to do it again. Sitting third in the Summit League right now, they are primed to make a run for the title in March. Western will see South Dakota State on the last game of the season. Before that they play Oral Roberts and Denver. The Leathernecks will look to stay disciplined and focused before tournament

Leathernecks continue four-game skid By Titus Perez courier staff
MACOMB Ill. — Western Illinois University Leathernecks men's basketball team (8-17, 3-9 Summit) entered the game against The University of South Dakota Coyotes (10-15, 4-8 Summit) on a three game losing streak. The Necks had confidence coming into the game because they defeated the Coyotes in their arena the last time they played, but unfortunately they fell in this one, 80-67. The first half was a back and forth affair. Western took the lead on a three by junior guard CJ Duff making the score 25-24 with 5:10 remaining in the half. South Dakota took over the rest of the half, ending on an 11-4 run. The only points that Western got in that half came from two emphatic dunks by senior center Brandon Gilbeck. The Coyotes lead 35-29 going into halftime behind 12 points and seven rebounds from their leading scorer on the season sophomore Stanley Umude. Umude struggled the first game against Western but figured it out this time around, ending the game with 17 points. The Necks and Coyotes played an even half, with the only difference being the carelessness of the Leathernecks. The Necks turned the ball over nine times compared to four on USD’s behalf. Head coach Billy Wright said the turnovers stopped the team’s rhythm: “we didn't get into a rhythm and a lot of that early on was because of our own doing in terms of turning the ball over.” The second half opened with a threepoint lead from South Dakota. This continued to be a reoccurring thing as WIU got burned from beyond the arc the entire second half. Sophomore guard Isaac Johnson got Western’s first score of the half on one layup, making the score 38-32. This is the closest Western would get the rest of the game as the Coyotes steadily built their lead. As Gilbeck exited the game after his third foul at the 16:05 mark, USD was on an 8-0 run.
This run ended by a layup and a foul shot made by Duff; the score sat at 46-35 with 15:37 remaining in the game. Both teams traded baskets over the next six minutes, however Western seemed to grab the momentum after freshman Ben Pyle converted on the team’s third and-one of the half, making the score 53-44 with 9:54 left to play. South Dakota senior Trey BurchManning, who lit the Leathernecks up in the first half of their first meeting responded with one of his five three-point marks on the next possession. This gave the Coyotes a comfortable 56-44 lead. Gilbeck re-entered the game with less than nine minutes to play, but it was a little too late. The Coyotes hit threes on three straight possessions and while the Necks were answering with baskets, USD’s threes kept the Necks at bay. The Coyotes made seven of their 13 three point attempts in the second half. Gilbeck went out of the contest again due to a head injury with 6:56 left and did not return. Burch-Manning hit a tough three with a hand in his face on the ensuing possession all but sealing the victory, going up 67-53 and only 6:15 remaining in the game. Over the next six minutes both teams gave it their all, ending the game with 80-67. Leathernecks leading scorer, sophomore guard Kobe Webster struggled throughout the game, shooting just 5/14. Wright noticed the struggle: “for the most part, we didn't finish plays around the basket and we can't do that against a good team.” Burch-Manning was the leading scorer in the game with 20 points hitting five of his nine three-point attempts. Webster scored a team high for the Purple and Gold, ending with 16 points and adding seven rebounds. Duff also added 15 points. South Dakota will hold their next game at home against the University of Denver Pioneers (7-19, 2-10 Summit), while the Leathernecks' next game will be on the road against the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (16-9, 10-2 Summit) on Wednesday.

Women's basketball snap four-game win streak By Michael Harms courier staff

Annabel Graettinger makes a move against Mizzou inside a packed Western Hall.
MACOMB Ill. — The Western Illinois women’s basketball team got upended by the University of South Dakota Saturday evening, 83-61. The Coyotes cap off a 10-game winning streak and continued their dominance as a top ranked team. It was the second half, though, that let the Coyotes do their thing. With just an 11-point lead at halftime, the Coyotes stepped on the gas and did not let up, outscoring the Leathernecks 44-33 in the second half alone. A large part of the Coyotes success came from Hannah Sjervin. She had 20 points and six blocks, 16 of those points coming in the second half.
Sjervin let her inside game do the talking as her 6-foot-2 frame let her dominate in the paint, getting easy layups and drawing fouls. She went 8-12 from the charity stripe, dramatically affecting the pace of the game. The best part of the game for USD wasn’t just Sjervin, but rather that three other Coyotes also scored in double digits. Ciara Duffy went 7-11 shooting tallying up 18 points. Chloe Lamb ended the game with 17 points and lastly Taylor Frederick finished with 10. This game was all about the Coyotes and their dominant run. Western Illinois was simply a thin wall trying to stop a juggernaut.
