Reed reelected as president Unopposed SGA candidates all take seats for 2018-2019

Each unopposed candidate claimed their seat in the Student Government Association (SGA) for the upcoming academic year with the announcement of the Student Government Association election results being revealed Friday afternoon in the Sandburg lounge.

SGA Attorney General Kelly Rodgers made the announcement following voting, which occurred from Monday through Friday of last week. Voting closed an hour before the announcement, during which Rodgers thanked all those who voted in this year ’s races.

Current Chief of Staff Justin Brown with 99 percent of the vote was elected as the next Student Member to the Board of Trustees. The remaining one percent of votes went to write-in candidates.

With 76 percent of the votes, sitting SGA President Grant Reed was reelected, this time with current Director of Academic Affairs Madison Lynn replacing current Vice President Samir Almhiemid as Vice President.

Write-in candidates received the remainder of the vote, following a write-in campaign effort from Aaron Chess and JT Baksha.

The lone Senator at-Large candidate on the ballot, current senator Doni Purifoy, received 61 percent of the vote for the five available positions Write-in candidates received the remainder of the vote, with Kyle Ramlow, Derek Lahey, Kevin Dukes and Hayden Goleman receiving also being elected in order of the number of the votes received. Lahey, although elected, had not accepted his position following the announcement.

The Office of Student Activities puts on this annual ceremony.

The department of English hosted its 11th annual Magliocco Lecture with speaker Professor Adrienne Brown on Friday in Morgan 109.

The Maurine Magliocco Lecture Series began in October 2006. The department works with a $30,000 endowment commitment to support an annual lecture in literature, film, theory or the state of the discipline. Dr. Maurine Magliocco, a retired member of the department, is responsible for the sub-

Nominators and nominees are then invited to the awards ceremony in April. These awards are presented to outstanding students, advisors and student organizations. Faculty, staff and students review all nominations at the end of March.

Some of the awards that will be presented this year are: The William E. Brattain Award,

given to a student who has shown academic growth and achievement; The Gordon A. Taylor Student Leadership award, given to five graduating seniors that went above and beyond their leadership roles within their respective organizations; Outstanding Volunteer Service by an Organization; Outstanding

Student Organization Advisor; Outstanding Co-Sponsored Program; Outstanding Student Program; and Most Improved Student Organization.

Professor David Banash of the English Department explained the speaker selection process. The department takes nominations for speakers from the faculty in English, has the coordinating committee review those nominations, ranks them and make invitations to the speakers.

“We chose Dr. Adrienne Brown because she is developing cutting-edge interdisciplinary work,” Banash said. “She looks at how the built environment of the city affects how we experience

ourselves, particularly in terms of race, and this gives her a new way to read the history of literature and the history of our cities.”

Dr. Brown began the lecture by joking about how she was surprised to see so many college students in attendance on Friday night. The crowd of around 50 responded with a chuckle before Dr. Brown started getting into the meat and potatoes of her book, "The Black Skyscraper."

She then explained the time in which skyscrapers really started to become a phenomenon, from the 1880s to the 1910s, and how the country was still very much deal-

ing with the issue of race at that time.

“We need to pay more attention to the ways architecture shapes and affects the way we see and read race,” Brown said. “Architecture is always shaping our encounter with race and that encounter changes over time; not just in relation to law or science, but in relationship to the material world.”

Brown contends that city architecture distorts the ways we interact with race.

In a non-densely populated setting, life tends to slow with one being more prone to interacting with those around oneself. In

the hustle and bustle of the big city, one’s interactions and perceptions of people change drastically.

In the question and answer portion of the talk, a woman from the audience asked Brown about how she started thinking about the connection between skyscrapers and race.

“For me the first thing was really this question of vantage points,” Brown said. “In a book that’s trying to dramatize the view from the top of the skyscraper, you’ve got usually three versions of that description: dark specs, dark ants, or dots, and I was very interested in that language.”

On Tuesday, April 10, all students, faculty and staff are encouraged to come out and attend the State of the Student Address presented by the Student Government Association President Grant Reed. The address will take place in the Sherman Hall Auditorium located on the third floor and will begin at 3 p.m. and will last approximately an hour.

According to Reed, the address is intended to educate students and the surrounding community on the duties and responsibilities of the Student Government Association as well as issues affecting the student body and our campus in general.

“We often talk about why students initially come to Western, but not always about the reasons that they choose to stay” Reed said. “In addition to bringing updates and speaking on the accomplishments of SGA over the course of this academic year, each of our speakers will also be highlighting the reasons and opportunities that have led them to making Western Illinois University their home.”

SGA Speaker of the Senate Patrick Quinlan and Student Representative to the Board of Trustees Wil Gradle will also be speaking at the address to provide a wider variety of topics and views.

Ever wonder what life would be like without your cell phone? Without having to rely on a single device for all of your social interactions and every day tactics? Well, at this point, I believe that going without advanced technology in this day in age is nearly impossible.

Over the weekend, I rushed out of my dorm to catch the elevator that came up to my floor. I got all the way down to floor one and out the door, when I started to feel uneasy.

I could sense that something

was missing. It didn’t take me too long to realize that I had left my phone in my room as I was leaving in a hurry.

I’m sure that we all have had this similar experience. And it’s almost like we panic in the absence of this single device.

This generation not only holds a mental attachment to modern technology, but a physical one as well. It’s almost scary that our closet bonds are with man- made items.

As we all know, modern day technology consists of more than just cell phones. There’s

television, computers, tablets and even watches that can access the internet just as quickly. As a society we are so consumed with our techy gadgets that we interact with the physical world less often. It’s becoming harder for us to socially connect with other people, because we are too consumed in a virtual reality. Personally, I even find it difficult to attend social functions, even family events. Mingling with new faces is especially hard for me once we get passed the greeting phase. It’s like my brain loses signal after “Hey, how’s it going?”

It’s not healthy, I don’t think we should be dedicated to a virtual world. Because we ignore the little things that life has given us and we take them for

granted. What ever happened to books and nature, or board games like Twister and Connect Four? Pretty soon we will all become antisocial robots.

Reproduction will occur less and less until eventually the entire population will be wiped out (Not really, but you get the picture).

I believed that we are all being brainwashed. As we are eaten alive by technology, we are being fed irrational ideas and beliefs. It is way too easy to access information, or anything for that matter, that we are losing our sense of determination to work for what we want. If something is put right in front of you every single time you’re looking for it, eventually you will get so used to it being there that you

will stop looking everywhere else. Our ancestors worked for what they wanted. Even most recent generations such as our parents and grandparents.

And here we are, being spoon fed everything like a bunch of helpless babies.

I’m not saying that we should be ashamed of our whereabouts. After all, it’s just the times we’re living in. But what I am saying is that we don’t have to ignore everything else out there. There is so much to live for other than material things. We should cherish what’s around us, and slowly unwrap our minds from the tight constraint of this technological era. Because in the end we’ll regret not living for ourselves, because we were too busy living in our phones.

The raunchy, sexy, hilarious show about finding ones purpose is sure to have made a huge impact on anyone who went and saw it. The cast, which includes monsters, puppets and humans, take you on a wild journey of what its like to live on Avenue Q.

A new video game is out by Ubisoft called “Far Cry 5.”

I haven’t played any other Far Cry game before this one, so this is all new to me. You begin the game by traveling into Montana in a helicopter. As you are flying you see a giant statue of the evil cult leader named Joseph Seed.

You learn that he and his family have taken over a small region of Montana and own the radio,

In the shows program there is a director’s note stating “This show is intentionally offensive by design, and we really leaned into that idea with our production.

We hope you enjoy!”

While this warning may seem silly, this show is far from politically correct, so the warning is necessary.

You land the helicopter and follow US Marshals to the front door of a church, where Seed is preaching his evil ways. As you enter the church, you see your fellow US Marshall say to Joseph Seed that he is required to turn himself in. You lead Seed to the helicopter. Shortly after you take flight the helicopter crashes and Seed runs away.

And so do you. Seed tells

you that “no one is coming to help you.”

You end up being knocked out by a guy named Dutch, who seems to be part of the resistance against the cult. You find yourself in his hideout after you wake up. He tells you to put on regular clothes. You meet with him and he sends you on your way.

So far, the game consists of liberating towns. This means going into small towns and killing every enemy and freeing hostages. Then, if you succeed, the town is a peaceful place again.

Your fellow US Marshalls have been captured and

are being held hostage in different places, and you need to go find them.

I am not finished with playing the game, but so far it has been fun.

I’ve flown a plane, which was super cool. I’ve also driven a pickup truck and an ATV on the roads.

Sometimes, when enemy cars pass you, they stop. Then, the characters get out and start shooting at you.

Sometimes you have to destroy towers the cult has built. There are a lot of them around the area which explode when you destroy them, so be careful.

This game is open-world,

meaning you can go anywhere and are not confined to a linear story path.

I’m playing on a gaming PC which runs the game well.

Because this game is so fun, I want to go back and play all the other Far Cry games I didn’t play. It looks like an interesting series, and I’ve heard that previous iterations are controversial.

Far Cry 5 depicts controversial things about religion and certain kinds of Americans. If you want to play this game, be warned that there will be things that might offend you.

If you can get your mind past that stuff, the game is super fun and worth the $60 for the standard edition.

The show starts off with Princeton, who was played

by Matt Bender. A newly graduated 22-year-old who had a B.A. in English.

This is the main dilemma of the second song in the show titled “ What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?” Straight and to the point, this song is exactly what the title says.

Bender portrayed Princeton (who is a puppet) with charisma and passion.

Something very unique about this particular show is that most of the characters are puppets. This means that you see the actor holding

the puppet while on stage, the actors themselves are dressed in all black but they are singing and speaking with the puppet.

This is not ventriloquism, you can see their expressions and action, but funny enough, you really end up focusing on the actual puppet character rather than the actor, which is also a compliment to the casts amazing talents.

This show, as pointed out before, is quite offensive and politically incorrect. Songs and topics range from “It Sucks to Be Me,” a song where everyone is complaining about why

their lives suck so much, to “If You Were Gay,” “The Internet is for Porn” and “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist.”

All these songs have more than unsavory topics, but the cast of WIU’s production left the audience laughing so hard they were gasping for air.

Some main characters of this show include Kate Monster, played by Annie Etchison. Monster is a quiet, and somewhat shy kindergarten aid with a dream of opening a special school just for monsters. Christmas Eve, played by Rosalind Blume, is a loud, slightly abusive, in

your face “Japanese” women who lives on Avenue Q with her fiancé Brian who is played by Logan Edris.

Of course, Gary Coleman is a character in this musical, played

by Nissi Smith. Smith did a hilarious job portraying the character with a twist because she is a female and Coleman’s character was originally a man.

This entire show was so well put together and made audience die from laughter and shock. The entire cast did an incredible job of portraying each character with humor and emotion. Avenue Q isn’t for everyone but it sure is a show you will never forget.

Cartoon Creator destorys innocence

We all have that one childhood cartoon that sticks with us. For some it’s educational cartoons like “Dora the Explorer.” But if you’re like me then your favorite cartoons growing up had off-color humor, wacky storylines, and two dysfunctional friends who never could find a solution to their problems. That cartoon was “The Ren & Stimpy Show.”

This show was about title characters Ren, an emotionally unstable Chihuahua, and Stimpy, a good-natured, dimwitted cat and their crazy adventures. It aired from 1991-1995 with five seasons, and 52 episodes. If you were old enough to remember watching it, then you’d know that it was one of the original cartoon shows on Nickelodeon along with “Doug”

and “ Rugrats.”

Unfortunately like most shows, it had to come to an end. What made “The Ren & Stimpy Show” such a classic, was the fact that the show was intended to expand children’s minds and introduce them into the adult world. We all laughed when Ren was slapping Stimpy around, yet we didn’t understand why it was a bad thing to do in real life.

We learned in time didn’t we?

The creator John Kricfalusi was a legend in the making, influencing shows that we have or are currently watching such as “Beavis and ButtHead” and “South Park.” With how the world is now, we’d never think in a million years that our beloved cartoon creators would be accused of sexually assaulting children. In Kricfalusi’s case, his luck ran out

on March 30, after being accused of making sexual advances to young girls during the prime of his career, making “The Ren & Stimpy Show.”

A recent story on BuzzFeed News, tells the shocking details of two women whose lives were ruined because of Kricfalusi’s advances towards them when they were teenagers. The first woman, Robin Byrd, told the outlet that when she was 13 years old she sent Kricfalusi a video about her ambition to create cartoon shows like he did. Byrd went on to say three years later after they first meet, things turned sexual.

At the age of 16, Byrd was given an invite to meet the cartoonist in Los Angeles and stay with him in his home. She said that he touched her private part through her pajamas. The incident continued and culminated when Kricfalusi again flew Byrd out to Los Angeles to have her intern at his studio Spumco. She then was working alongside him and was also his live in girlfriend. He was 25 years old at the time.

Byrd told BuzzFeed “He ruined a good bit of my childhood and my early adulthood. [He] gave me PTSD, and forced me to change careers, putting my life 10 years or more behind. He is an abuser in the way that he will pull you into a relationship with him and then tell you who to be and what he wants from you.”

The second woman to come out, Katie Rice, had a similar interest in becoming a cartoon artist and would talk to him on AOL when she was 14 years old. He went on to tell her in their messages that he was “crazy about her, and if he ever made her sexually aroused.”

When Rice began working for him in 2000 when she was 18 years old, she noticed that Kricfalusi had photographs of naked girls, one being of a 10-year-old child on his computer. She reported the images three times to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

“I became a better artist by working for him, I’m not grateful for it. I wish I hadn’t. I wish I were a worse artist now and I

didn’t have all this bulls—to deal with,” said Rice in an interview with BuzzFeed.

Kricfalusi’s lawyer stated to the same outlet that the cartoonist had struggled for many years with mental illness, which was eventually diagnosed in 2008. “To that point, for nearly three decades he had relied primarily on alcohol to self-medicate. Since that time he has worked feverishly on his mental health issues, and has been successful in stabilizing his life over the last decade. This achievement has allowed John the opportunity to grow and mature in ways he’d never had a chance at before.”

He also went on to say that Rice’s allegations of child pornography are not correct. No matter what excuses Kricfalusi is trying to use, it still does not justify his inappropriate behavior. It now dampens the mood to watch “The Ren & Stimpy Show,” which is unfortunate because that show gave young kids and adults, a good chuckle. Now it just gives us the heebie jeebies.

Is the cold weather making you miss the summer? Beaches, Outdoor Activities, and Music Festivals? If you’re one of the many people ready for summer to hit so you can attend music festivals like Warped Tour and Lollapalooza get ready because Western has a music festival of it’s own coming up soon COOLCHELLA. Corbin-Olsen Residence Hall is having its annual capstone, COOLCHELLA, formally CorbinStock, on April 17th,

2018. The event will be held in the Corbin parking lot. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and will conclude at 8:30 p.m.

COOLCHELLA is CorbinOlsen’s Art, Music, & Performance festival that they hold annually to raise money for a charitable cause.

There will be a RA Dunk Tank sponsored by RAC, as well as Pie an RA. COOLCHELLA is based on the music festival Coachella

Valley Music and Arts Festival, which takes place in California.

Coachella is a three day Music and Art Festival, where attendants can camp on site.

COOLCHELLA will consist of many performances. These performances include: Dollhouse Dolls Dance Team, Invoxicated: WIU’s Accapella Group, DJ Brady Smith, and a Lip Sync Battle between residence hall staffs.

There will also be a variety of activities at COOLCHELLA, such as free henna, body marbling, and screen-printing of COOLCHELLA t-shirts.

No matter what your music taste is, there will be a variety of talented performers, and it is no doubt that this year’s COOLCHELLA will be just as successful as the last!

Arctic Monkeys are back After a five-year wait, the Arctic Monkeys have announced they are in the process of finishing up their sixth studio album “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino,” and will release it to the public on May 11. This will be the first album that lead vocalist/guitarist Alex Turner has co-produced with their long time collaborator James Ford.

Their last album “AM,” which was released in 2013, was highly praised by music critics.

Many music magazines gave the album four out of five stars.

Songs off that album include “R U Mine,” “Do I Wanna Know,” “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High” and “One for the Road.”

The Arctic Monkeys began their indie rock career in 2002.

Many people call them the modern day Beatles, because they have brought back the British Invasion sound again.

Their most well known album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” came out in 2006. The album became

the fastest selling debut album in British music history, with 360,000 copies sold in the first week of its release. It still currently remains the fastest selling album by the band.

It is also the only album that features their original bass player Andy Nicholson before Nick O’Malley replaced him.

This popular album is recognized for the songs “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor,” “When the Sun Goes Down,” “Dancing Shoes” and “Riot Van.” In England the album reached Platinum five times, and in the United States it reached Gold by the RIAA. “Favourite Worst Nightmare,” was their second studio album that reached high ratings with 44,000 copies sold in America, and one million sold in England in 2007. “Brainstorm,” “Teddy Picker” and “Fluorescent Adolescent” are three out of the 12 songs that had single song popularity. The album has quite a different sound then their previous album. It’s

faster, louder and has a bit of a twang to it.

Josh Homme, lead vocalist/ guitarist of Queens of the Stone Age, co-produced their third studio album “Humbug” in 2009. Popular songs off that album “My Propeller,” “Crying Lightning,” “Cornerstone” and “Pretty Visitors”

“Suck It and See,” surpassed Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” in 2011. Like “Humbug” four singles off their fourth album made the airwaves including “Suck It and See,” “Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair,” “The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala” and “Black Treacle.”

What makes the Arctic Monkeys come back exhilarating is the fact that not one of their albums has ever been lower than four stars. Their music has that chill factor along with a sense of heaviness. We know that this new album of theirs will not disappoint.

As of now the band plans to do both a North American and European tour this summer starting in May. They will be making a stop to Chicago in August to be one of the many headlining bands to play at Lollapalooza.

There is a double standard in our politics

One of the ideas that we aspire to (or at least should aspire to) in our political system is the idea of fair standards and equality for all. That all politicians, regardless of position, class, race or gender are treated equally by the press, and held to the same standards by all voters. However, as nice as this idea may sound, it should be blatantly obvious to all observers of our political system that in this regard at least, we utterly and completely fail.

Much has been written about the double standards of male and female politicians in our country. You don’t have to look very far to see the discrepancy in the way pundits talk about politicians like Sarah Palin and George Bush. Women are gen-

erally discussed in terms of their appearance or demeanour, and men in terms of their actions or accomplishments.

The same discrepancy often exists for powerful people of color. They are scrutinized, and held under a different light than white public figures. Any negative action committed by a person of color is blown out of proportion, and explained as a consequence of their race.

Meanwhile, the same action committed by a white person belongs to them alone, and is almost never extrapolated to all white people.

But there is another double standard in our political system. Members of the Democratic Party are almost never held to the same standard as their Republican colleagues.

Consider the difference in coverage between our current and previous presidents. During the Obama years Fox News, which according to a study done by the Nielsen Watch group is the most watched cable news channel, was full of pundits, presenters and commentators exploding in anger every time Obama went golfing. But now that Trump has spent more than triple the amount of time at the golf course than Obama, conservatives are oddly silent about the issue of presidential golf trips.

The double standard rears its ugly head again with issues such the Benghazi scandal. There have been eight separate, bipartisan, Congressional investigations into the case, and none of them found any wrongdoing on the part of Secretary Clinton, but Republicans continue to wail about Benghazi and government corruption. When it comes to the Mueller investigation into Trump-Russia collusion, an

investigation for which there is far more evidence, and that has already led to several indictments, conservative figureheads such Sean Hannity are either completely silent, or are actively fighting against any sort of investigation.

We can see this double standard over and over, like the way conservatives approach Trump admitting to sexual harassment compared to their treatment of Bill Clinton’s infidelity. Made up scandals such as Pizzagate, Obama eating Dijon mustard and wearing tan suits or Obamacare Death panels are rampant during times of Democratic leadership, but when actual, consequential scandals that are supported by evidence appear around Republican leaders, there is no end to the mental gymnastics conservatives will perform in order to ignore them.

We are at a point in time where the world is constantly on the internet. We have the answers to any question and the ability to contact anyone in our fingertips. But these powers to not come without dangers. There are consequences to putting information online.

A lot of the time browsing the web is spent on social media either socializing with friends or watching funny videos of cats to pass the time. Especially in high school and college where it seems everyone has an account for almost every social media site. I know personally I’ve been talked into getting pretty much every one except Twitter because I haven’t heard a good enough reason to get one yet

and I’m just not that interesting.

We’re also at a point where a lot of social media is interconnected, access to one account or a phone number can bring up accounts on other sites. I know if I get someone’s phone number they always end up popping up on people I may know on both Facebook and Snapchat. Which can be both fun and a little weird if it’s your boss.

Anyways social media can be a great thing and has done a lot to bring people together, but there is a still a trade off.

It’s common sense that the more you put online, the more people know about you. For example if you post a picture of your cat Mr. Whiskers, it can be implied you

hopefully buy cat food. Most people probably just smile at the cute cat and think nothing more of it. A cat food company might be a little more curious though. Search engines and cookies have been tracking online activity for years to see who’s interested in their products and that creepy occurence where you look something up once and two days later it becomes an ad on a website.

Companies store online activity data to help their sales and to advertise to the right people. An ad for cat food would do nothing for me because I sadly don’t own a cat. It’s an unspoken online agreement that a lot of people don’t realize they’re making. Recent uproar though has come with Facebook supposedly not realizing that data firms they used were harvesting profiles for information in the millions.

The firm reportedly took information from 87 million ac-

counts and sold the information to analytical firms according to the Wall Street Journal. Facebook has since disassociated with the firms responsible but their lack of knowledge about the situation and the amount of information Facebook tracks isn’t helping their reputation.

You can go on Facebook and download the data they have on your account as well as see the preferences they assign to you based on their estimates of your interests, political affiliations, religion, etc. I was curious and looked up what they thought my political affiliations were and they were pretty much spot on. It’s honestly terrifying how much people can find out about you from one post or one page visit.

Just remember that anything you post or visit can pretty much be seen by anyone no matter what your privacy settings are. If there’s a will there’s a way.

way too. Bring up the Trump Russia scandal to your conservative uncle and he will fall over himself with “well what about Hillary and the Democrats” in response. It’s time to stop pretending like both sides are equally bad.

Sure, the Democratic Party has its own problems. But the Republican Party, and the people who vote for it, are so clouded by their own cognitive dissonance that they have made themselves impossible to work with. It would be nice to believe that we can overcome our differences and compromise. But in order to do that we need to have some sort of respect for fair standards for both sides.

When one party is caught up in fake news and fake scandals that they can’t even see a real scandal when it hits them on the head, cooperation becomes impossible. The blame is not shared by both parties.

Someone is at fault, and I think I know who it is.

He ended the 2017 season with seven goals and one assist and will be greatly missed next season.

She advanced to second because of a wild throw, and Minyard and Lara scored. Abbott smashed a homer to right center to dramatically tie the game at 7-7.

Beatty flied out to center field to advance the runners, as junior Emily Ira came in to pinch run for Henson. This brought freshman Alyssa Ealy to the plate. She recorded her first collegiate hit, as she walk off doubled to center, bringing in Ira and Hollatz for the 10-9 comeback win.

It was great, it was dramatic, and it was the Leathernecks fifth straight win. They’ll be on the road this Saturday as they travel to Iowa State in search of more wins. They’ll return home on April 22, as they open up an eight-game home stand against the University of Omaha Nebraska Mavericks.

McGregor causes chaos

Every sport has that one moment where something goes extremely wrong, that it jeopardizes the future outcome of that business and their athletes. UFC met their match on Thursday when a belligerent Conor McGregor entered the Barclays Center and destroyed the loading dock area. This by far was the most bizarre, yet most mesmerizing event to happen after the UFC 223 press conference.

The main event match was suppose to be Max Holloway, who was replacing Tony Ferguson that had to undergo surgery for his torn LCL, against “The Eagle” Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC Lightweight Championship. This match has been three years in the making, but so many situations occurred causing for this match to be postponed numerous times.

McGregor at the moment is the lightweight champion, but hasn’t defended it since he won it against Eddie Alvarez in November of 2016.

After a lot of back and forth about whether McGregor was going to defend his title against the winner of the lightweight match at UFC 223, or have to strip his title since he hasn’t defended it since winning it, White decided that it wasn’t fair for The Notorious McGregor to keep his undefended title. So per White’s

request, McGregor was going to give his championship title an official goodbye on Saturday night.

The first set of news that was announced prior to the incident was that McGregor was going to be at the event in Brooklyn, and was personally going to hand in his title, and watch the two fighters duke it out for his former prized possession.

However, that wasn’t the case.

When the press conference for UFC 223 was over, instead of hearing news about how the event went and which fighter talked the most smack, we all were drawn to a very violent and unsportsmanlike scenario. If you haven’t seen the video, I highly recommend you find it.

In comes McGregor and 20 or so of his “friends” or as White called them “hooligans.” They all entered the Barclays Center and took an elevator up to the loading dock area. We then see a zombie like McGregor dressed in black from his head down to his feet yelling out to his buddies to smash the windows. The red corner fighters were all on one bus and were about to leave the arena for the day. With his Hulk like strength McGregor took a dolly and smashed it into one of the bus windows, causing for it to shatter and cut fighters Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg.

In one of the UFC videos, you can

see Chiesa’s forehead cut right down the middle. Borg also suffered from corneal abrasions. When he was taken to the hospital Borg reported he couldn't see out of his injured eye. Both Chiesa and Borg’s fights were called off for Saturday's payper-view.

This by far was the oddest, and the most bizarre event to happen.

The media blew up on this event and so many questions were being asked. The biggest question was if McGregor was furious that he had to strip his title? He wasn’t angry about losing his title; instead he was there to defend one of his good friends.

Artem Lobov, a longtime friend of McGregor’s was talking a lot of smack against one of the lightweight opponents, Nurmagomedov. When Nurmagomedov replied back to the insults, Lobov couldn’t handle it, which led McGregor to come in and cause a scene.

Unfortunately for Lobov, he lost his opportunity to compete on Saturday in the preliminary card against Alex Caceres. Because of McGregor’s outburst three fights were canceled, causing for many fans to cancel their pay-per-view purchases.

In a set of interviews that followed, White was speechless yet frustrated at the same time. He mentioned that if McGregor didn’t make such a fool out of himself, they were going to offer him a new contract that was considered to be the biggest contract signing in UFC history. They were going to have him sign it at the press conference on Thursday, and announce that he was going to

compete against Rafael dos Anjos for the interim welterweight title this spring.

Later that night McGregor turned himself in to the police and was released on a $50,000 bail. He appeared in court the next day and was told that he would have a trial on June 14, and was free to head back to his home country of Ireland in the meantime.

This rampage has caused a lot of commotion within the MMA industry.

Many are wondering if McGregor was high on drugs when he decided to disrupt the fighters who were focused on their upcoming matches. Some argue that White has a big part in this situation because he only spotlights certain fighters and turns them into money hungry monsters. Whatever the case may be, this event was unacceptable and another controversial situation to add onto the many others that have happened in sports history.

I personally think it could be a reaction from multiple head injuries. The last one he suffered from against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in August could've been the one that broke the camel's back.

It's a very sad thing to see happen. I remember the first fight he ever had and always thinking that he'd forever be my favorite fighter. He represented our Irish heritage and the things we stand for as Celtic warriors.

Unfortunately the luck of the Irish wasn't on his side, and probably won't be for a long time now. He currently faces three assault charges and one criminal mischief charge. Many more charges are to come.

Gargano and Ciampa make history After two years of building a remarkable story, the NXT Universe saw the culmination of one of the most well booked storylines in WWE history on Saturday night between Johnny “Wrestling” Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa.

Gargano and Ciampa debuted in September of 2015 as a tag team in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament. After defeating Tyler Breeze and Bull Dempsey in the first round, they lost their next match and found themselves out of the tournament. The two crossed paths again on June 23, as they put on a hard-hitting match in the first round of the Cruiserweight Classic that saw Gargano take the victory.

The chemistry between the two superstars was indisputable and Triple H, along with the creative team in NXT, decided to put them together as a tag team known as “DIY” who would go on to be one of the most beloved tag teams in NXT history. DIY got their first shot at the NXT Tag Team Championships on

August 20, 2016 at TakeOver: Brooklyn II and came up short against the Revival. However, they found themselves back in the title picture and just three months later, they got another shot at the Revival in a two out of three falls match at TakeOver: Toronto. This was the crowning moment of DIY as Gargano and Ciampa were in the center of the ring and made Dash and Dawson tap out simultaneously to win their first championship.

A two-month tag title reign came to an end as one of the largest and most dominant tag teams in NXT history debuted on the TakeOver: San Antonio card. The Authors of Pain were immediately a force to be reckoned with as they had one of the most iconic managers in WWE history, Paul Ellering, by their side. Akam and Rezar defeated Gargano and Ciampa in a brutal ladder match. Gargano and Ciampa had one final chance to regain their championships on May 20, 2017 in Chicago. DIY came up short again and were unable to recapture the elusive

titles. Following the match was one of the most heart wrenching, shocking heel-turns in WWE history.

After their loss, Gargano and Ciampa sat in the middle of the ring to a chorus of cheers and adulation from the NXT crowd.

As they walked up the ramp to head back stage, they stopped at the top to take one last look at the crown, the typical WWE trademark came down at the bottom of the screen as it does at the conclusion of every show but this time it was different.

Ciampa grabbed his teammate and smashed him against the Titantron. The audience was beyond shocked and the cheers immediately turned to gasps and boos. Ciampa immediately became the most hated man in NXT. Fans couldn’t wait for the feud to continue but it was discovered later that night, that Ciampa tore his ACL in the match and would be sidelined for a significant amount of time. Gargano went on and had his individual success in NXT and found himself in the title picture for the NXT Championship. At NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia Gargano failed to win the championship in a spectacular match that had the entire wrestling world clamoring but after the match was

over, Ciampa made his highly anticipated return and attacked Gargano from behind with one of his crutches. Gargano was granted a rematch for the NXT championship on Feb. 14, 2018, where he would lose his job if he was defeated. Gargano was on the verge of a victory when Ciampa interfered once again and cost Gargano the match.

All of the bad blood between the two former partners came to fruition as an unsanctioned match was scheduled for TakeOver: New Orleans. Ciampa made his entrance on Saturday night to one of the most hostile crowds that I can remember. He ditched any theme music and just let the crowd hurl boos and expletives his way as he entered the ring. Gargano came out next and the roof to the Smoothie King Arena just about flew off with the cheers of the NXT crowd.

The two stood in the middle of the ring and stared each other down to begin the match before blow after blow came from the opponents. Gargano gained the early upper hand and released his months of pent up aggression against the man who betrayed him. The back and forth match left fans in awe as Gargano and Ciampa spilled outside the ring and used the entire arena as they battle ground. Ciampa was

power-bombed from the ring onto exposed cement. High risk moves, false finishes and some of the best in-ring storytelling that has ever graced a wrestling ring created the best match in NXT history.

The end of the match saw a callback to Gargano and Ciampa’s first matchup in the Cruiserweight Classic. The two men sat in the middle of the ring as Gargano began to empathize with his former best friend but Ciampa tried to use his knee brace to catch Gargano off guard, but Gargano saw it coming, ducked the brace and used it to force a submission from Ciampa. Gargano’s victory was an emotional release that makes wrestling such an infectious form of entertainment. WWE is notorious for getting a lot of things wrong and having convoluted storylines that often end in a payoff that seems like it was not worth the time that they put into the feud in the first place but this storyline was absolute perfection.

Ciampa has established himself as one of the best heels on the entire WWE roster, and not just on NXT while Gargano has become the purest baby-face since Daniel Bryan. The feud between these two superstars has been in the works for years, but the matchup on Saturday was only the beginning.

Soccer posts winless weekend

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois men’s soccer team continued their spring season this past weekend. The Leathernecks played in back-to-back games against two different schools. The first game was against Central Methodist University and they lost by a score of 1-0, the second game was against Wheaton College and the score was 1-1.

Central Methodist is an NAIA school located in Fayette, Missouri.

The Eagles ended their 2017 season ranked 12 nationally in the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. All except one player on their 14-man roster is an international student.

In a grudge match between the two teams, there was much energy on the field from both the Leathernecks and the Eagles. The game got more and more physical as the game went on. Late in the second half there were a few corner kicks that gave Western a chance to put one in the back of the net but unfortunately, they were not able to overcome the deficit of the early goal by CMU. The next game of the day was played immediately after their first

match. The Division III school, Wheaton College, came out and got a goal fairly quickly into the game. A ball that was bouncing around in the box found the back of the net after being tapped in by one of the Wheaton. Junior goalkeeper Tim Hansen was not happy about this goal after being that the opposing player was left unmarked in the box.

Fortunately, the Leathernecks came back and retaliated off of a goal from senior midfielder Daniel Kadima to tie the game. Each game of the round robin was only 60 minutes as oppose to the regular 90-minute soccer match.

A couple of graduating seniors came back to help Western out in these games. Two of those players were Fernando Pacheco and Alejandro Pacheco. The forward came out this past weekend to give the Leathernecks a deeper bench for the games. Throughout their college careers, both players have significantly impacted the program. Fernando Pacheco received that honor of CoSIDA AllAmerican First Team honor which the organization announced on Thursday, December 7.

MACOMB Ill. – The Western Illinois University softball team opened up a three-game series with the Indiana UniversityPurdue University of Fort Wayne Mastodons on Saturday.

The Leathernecks hosted the first two games with spectacular back-to-back double header wins.

The first game was all Leathernecks, as they cruised to a 5-0 victory. They got things started early as they had a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning. Sophomore Jasmine Lara singled down left field and then freshman Ashley Minyard getting hit by a pitch at the top of the line-up. Senior Kelsey Marlow was also walked to leave the bases loaded with no outs for junior Hailey Duwa.

She was also walked, bringing in Lara. Junior Payton Abbott then hit a sacrifice pop fly over third base to score Minyard to make it 2-0. There were a pair of strikeouts by the Fort Wayne pitcher to get out of the inning.

The score stayed the same until the bottom of the fifth, when sophomore Sydney Hollings crushed a homerun to left field to make it 3-0.

Minyard got base again, this time with a single to start of the sixth inning. Marlow also singled up the middle to put runners on first and second as Duwa stepped up to the plate.

She doubled up the middle to let both runners score to make it 5-0 which ended up being the final score.

After about a half hour, game number two was underway.

The Leathernecks found themselves on base first again, as Marlow was walked in the bottom of the first. Duwa reached second base off of an error by the third baseman and Marlow scored. Abbott then singled to right field to bring in Duwa for the 2-0 lead after one inning.

This time the Mastodons had a response, as they scored seven to kick off the second.

Freshman Stephanie Hanic tripled to right field. Courtney Holm reached first off of an error, then stole second. Brooke Imel was then walked to get bases loaded with one out.

Jenna Balthazor was hit by a pitch, advancing the runners and bringing in Hanic, but they weren’t even close to done.
