Former Leatherneck wins Super Bowl By Devon Greene editor-in-chief

The Western Illinois University football program has added another alumni to the list of Super Bowl champions. Former Leatherneck, Khalen Saunders has become the eighth Leatherneck to win a Super Bowl. Saunders joins a prestigious list of Super Bowl champions that includes former Patriots Bryan Cox and Rodney Harrison, former Green Bay Packers Frank Winters and Don Beebe, former Denver Bronco Cyron Brown, former New York Giant Rich Seubert, former Pittsburgh Steeler Mike Wagner and former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Aaron Stecker. According to Athletics, Western Illinois has won 18 Super Bowls between former coaches and alumni. After the Chiefs' victory over the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship game, Saunders immediately set his sights on the task ahead, winning the Super Bowl. “Loved meeting Hunt’s trophy, but I’m trying to see that Lombardi now. Super Bowl

bound,” Saunders said on his social media. “Woke up feeling like I still got something to prove. We ain’t done.” The Kansas City Chiefs had a tall task ahead of them with the San Francisco 49ers ahead of them in Super Bowl 53 in Miami. It was a tumultuous game that saw the Chiefs trailing for the majority of the game before pulling off an improbable comeback to win 31-20. The win was the first Super Bowl victory for the Chiefs since 1970 when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in Louisiana. Saunders recorded one tackle in the game. “No matter what else happens in life… I’m going to die a champion,” Saunders tweeted along with two photos of him holding the Lombardi trophy on Twitter. Saunders sent another tweet on Monday expressing his thanks. “Just a kid from St Louis city… no excuse me, just a champion from St. Louis city,” Saunders said. “God thank you for your grace and blessings. And Bingo, thank you for guiding my steps.”

Khalen Saunders celebrates his Super Bowl victory.

Police investigate skirmish on West Adams

By Devon Greene editor-in-chief

Macomb Police are investigating a brawl that resulted in a crowd of people nearly getting run over by a vehicle early Sunday Morning on West Adams Street.   According to local Lyft driver, Steven Barnum, the incident occurred at around 4 a.m. on Sunday morning. Barnum has been driving for Lyft since September of 2019 and says he sees plenty of strange things around town but the altercation on Sunday was entirely new territory.   “I see fights and reckless driving on a regular basis but I’ve never seen anything like this incident,” Barnum said. Barnum said he was driving to

pick up some passengers from Lincoln Hall and saw six people fighting across the street. He filmed the incident and caught the driver of the vehicle driving toward a group of people.   “I tried to film it as I was waiting for people to get in my car, and then I saw this guy drive from down the street and build up momentum,” Barnum said. “Then he tried to hit people in the street and they kept dodging and getting out of the way.”  Barnum said the driver tried two or three times to hit the group of people in the street and on the sidewalk. He also said that he wants to dispel the idea that the incident was just “kids fooling around.” “I think that it was a very blatant attempt to kill people,” Bar-

num said. “Anyone who drives a car toward a group of people not once, but several times is trying to do a little more than just scare them.”   Barnum was not the only one to capture the event on video. There was also a video posted on YouTube that has gained more than 32,000 views. The owner of this video is Derek MccLeary who is also a Lyft driver in the area and was just across the street from Barnum.  MccLeary’s video was significantly longer and captured a lot of the chaos that unfolded, including multiple attempts to hit people from the vehicle in question. In the video, the car was shown pulling out of the driveway in reverse, nearly hitting multiple pedestrians. The

car then starts to drive down the street, after a person jumped on the hood. According to MccLeary, the person who jumped on the hood of the car was screaming “I’ll kill all of y’all.” The car then turned around and tried to hit a cluster of pedestrians who were standing near the sidewalk on the street. The group of people were able to get out of the path of the car and avoided any injuries. The car then turned around and took another swipe at the people before the video was stopped. MccLeary then moved his vehicle to a safe location and waited for police to arrive at the scene. According to MccLeary, one police officer arrived at the scene and was outnumbered by what looked like 150 people at the res-

idence. He then said more police officers arrived four or five minutes later and started sending everyone on the scene home. MccLeary also said that he offered to his video to the officers on the scene in order to help apprehend anyone involved in the altercation but says the officer said, “We’re not worried about it, we just sent everyone home.” MccLeary then went home that night and uploaded the video to YouTube and after it gained notoriety, he was contacted by Macomb Police Lieutenant Lindsey May asking if he got a plate number.

MccLeary said that he is considering quitting Lyft due to threats and harassment being sent his way from various people on Facebook. Barnum said he and his passengers stayed in their car and watched it all unfold for about five minutes before the police showed up. He then said he and his passengers got out and watched from the sidewalk to see if they could see or hear anything else. Macomb Police are still investigating the incident and information is being withheld due to the active investigation. They also said that somewhere around 200 people were involved in the incident and are encouraging anyone with information to contact them.

BRANDON TROST/PRODUCTION MANAGER

BRANDON TROST/PRODUCTION MANAGER

Pictures are one of the most valuable things that we have been given. I am the kind of person that takes a lot of videos, but I want to start trying to take more pictures to remember things.  In the past, it was almost a hassle to take pictures because you had to take your camera everywhere and for a long time they did not fit in a bag. But, now we are fortunate enough to have smart phones that have amazing cameras. We can pull it right out of our pocket and take beautiful pictures to last us a lifetime.  Photos have evolved in so many different ways in just the last two decades that I have been alive. I remember that when I was little, my parents had a camera and they had to go and get the film developed. There were also disposable cameras that had a certain number of pictures on them and people would buy them for events. The flaw with these cameras was that you could not see the pictures after they were taken, so they could turn out looking terrible. As I got older, there were digital cameras that had memory cards in them and you could export them right to your computer then upload them to a website to get hard copies of them. While this is still a popular way to take them,

I would say that using your phone is the most common form because of the convenience of it. We have a better camera quality right at our fingertips than some smaller digital cameras and it is a blessing.   Now, there are some negative effects that come along with having a cell phone at your fingertips. This has caused more and more kids to get in trouble with their parents because they document everything and there is proof of them doing things they shouldn’t be doing. But, I still think there is so much value in having pictures from those crazy moments because they are memories.  Pictures are also a great way to decorate your personal space. For myself, I think that my challenge is choosing what pictures I want printed out and put on the wall because I have so many. I think that pictures are a phenomenal way to remember the past. It is also a great way to show your kids and family. The saying “pictures are worth a thousand words” is very cliche, but it is so true. We are fortunate enough to have the ability to take pictures of almost everything in our day to day lives, so we should take advantage of it before we regret not having those photos.

Kobe Bryant was not just an amazing basketball player, but he was a great inspiration for many Americans across the world.  He achieved greatness because he focused his willpower on one goal, to become a great basketball player. Not only did Bryant improve more and more in basketball, but he also became a true hero that many fans looked up to. After 18 All-Star selections, two NBA finals most valuable player awards, five championship rings, two Olympic gold medals, and over 20 seasons of playing, Bryant decided to retire in 2016. Bryant’s legacy did not stop on the court that day. Soon after his retirement, his daughter Gianna Bryant, also known as Gigi, fell in love with the game of basketball. Gianna's love for the game of basketball transcended after watching her father play for years. Gigi’s overall goal was to play for the WNBA when she grew up and planned to continue her father’s legacy after his retirement. Kobe began coaching his 13-year-old daughter and eventually formed “Team Mamba”.  On January 26, 2020, Gianna, Kobe, Christina Mauser, Sarah Chester, Payton Chester, Ara Zobayan, Keri Altobelli, Alyssa Altobelli and John Altobelli died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. His wife Vanessa Bryant and Kobe’s three other daughters were not on the board during the crash. According to People magazine, “He and

Vanessa had a deal that they would never fly on a helicopter together”. Although there was no elaboration of this deal, many believe that most couples avoid flying together in case something like this would happen. Not only is the victim’s family mourning from this tragic accident, but so is the entire nation and fans of Kobe. Everyone around the world is gathering during this difficult time and honoring the lives of all victims. From the massive groups of people chanting Kobe, the Empire state building lighting up purple and gold, postponing the Lakers game, the murals painted in Los Angeles, and all the love and support throughout social media. The families of the victims are feeling so much support during this tragic time in the community. After Vanessa’s heartbreaking post on Instagram, she asks from the fans and many people mourning from the deaths of these nine victims to donate to the MambaOnThree Foundation. This fund will help support the other families affected by this tragedy. Although the legend himself was taken from us too soon, I believe that his legacy will live on forever.  Kobe was not only a great team player, but he was someone that many people looked up to. He adored his family, teammates and friends. His love for the game of basketball was indescribable and he sets an amazing example that if you put your mind to something, anything is possible.

Should couples live together before marriage?  In the past, it was frowned upon to live with a significant other before you were married. Some people still believe in this, but I think that it is a tradition that can be broken.  Marriage is supposed to last forever and there are very many aspects that come with it. One very important one is living together. You could completely know someone outside of their home and be completely in love with them, but if your living styles do not match up, it could cause serious problems in the future. There are several arguments that say that if you really love someone, you will learn to adjust to their lives, but I totally disagree. I think that there are some things that can be compromised on, but I would rather not spend my first few years

of my marriage figuring out how to live amongst one another. I am not talking about little things like where you put your dirty dishes or how often you do your laundry. I am talking about things like how to make a routine in the morning around each other or how to coexist in the same living space. Like I mentioned, I can see why people want to go the more traditional route, especially if they have more traditional values or grew up in a home where they were taught that tradition is the only way to go. I can respect that people love the anticipation of finding out what it is like to be married. People see moving in with your significant other after the wedding a learning experience, but personally it is something that I do not want to learn after I am

already married. In my personal opinion, I see both sides of it. Some people have been able to move in with the person after they married them and have an extremely happy marriage, but I also know people that before they got married, lived together and it just did not work out. I am personally not planning on taking any chances. I know my personality and I can be a very headstrong person, so I recognize that I may possibly be hard to live with someday. I am not taking any chances in my marriage. I would rather break up with someone because we couldn’t live together, rather than pay for a wedding and end up divorced. Ultimately, everyone has different opinions and ideas on how they are going to take on their relationship. It does not matter how others do it; whatever works best for you and your significant other is what you should do to make your relationship/ marriage work.

Will the XFL work this time around? It’s that time of year again. Football season is over, right? Wrong! It’s just getting good. If you haven’t heard about the return of the Extreme Football League (XFL), then you must be living under a rock. I’m here to talk about how and why it will succeed on its second go around as well as why it bombed the first time back in 2001. First, a little bit of the league’s history. The original XFL was a combined venture between the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and NBC. NBC had lost the rights to air NFL games in 1998 and were desperate to garner ratings and get football back. Luckily for them, Vince McMahon, chairman and CEO of the WWE, had a wonderful rendition of spring football called the XFL. The two companies somehow thought it was going to be a good idea to try and mix the sport of American football with the entertainment of WWF-style wrestling and other shenanigans; it wasn’t. Sure, ratings soared for the first week or two, but then they absolutely plummeted. The companies tried everything to revive the dying league, but they couldn’t and it folded after just one season in 2001. Now, I mentioned shenanigans, and I’m sure you’re wondering, “what kind of shenanigans?” The list includes things like: flying a blimp over an Oakland Raiders game only for it to

crash into a seafood restaurant, WWF-style promos before games, extremely underdressed cheerleaders and insanely dumb and dangerous rules. I don’t want to focus any more on the old XFL, so if you really want to learn more funny and outright unbelievable facts about the 2001 campaign, there are countless articles and YouTube videos out there to enjoy. Now, why is the XFL going to work this time around? I’m going to start with the fact that McMahon is going to be hands off all football operations, or at least he says so. McMahon is primarily the financial backbone of this league. Last time around, he dropped a modest $100 million to kick-start the project. It was a “colossal failure” according to McMahon and he lost around $35 million on the venture. Luckily, the man is worth $2.2 billion and losing $35 million to him is the equivalent to me losing one single dollar. So, this time he put his money where his mouth is and is willing to put $500 million down to ensure he doesn’t look like an idiot again. So, the company has a great financial backing, now they just need someone to manage football operations. Insert Oliver Luck. He’s the commissioner and CEO of the XFL. He’s the one who gets to make the decisions about what happens on the field. And I think that’s the major

factor here. Last time, McMahon did it all and blurred the lines between wrestling entertainment and football. Fans didn't want to see that, they wanted to see just football. This time, the company is taking things seriously and making every decision like it could be their last. So yeah, it’s got financial support and a commissioner who actually knows football and has kind of been in this position before, but what about the actual football on the field? How will it rival the NFL? With intriguing new rules, that’s how. Now, huge disclaimer, I’m no huge pro football fan. I watch the big college matchups and I start watching the NFL around Week 14 when it gets interesting. I never really cared about the Rams when they were in St. Louis and never hopped on the Chiefs’ bandwagon. I couldn’t name more than 25 current NFL players to save my life and sure don’t know all the rules, but hey, neither do the refs. So, straight from the XFL’s website, here are five gameplay innovations. Let’s start with the kickoff, obviously. There are lots of rule changes here, mainly where the players on the field are positioned and potential penalties. The kicker kicks from the 35-yard line while the returning team lines up on their 30-yard line. Each team must have exactly three players outside the hash marks on both sides of the ball and cannot move until the returner catches the ball. The rules also state that out of bound kicks and kicks that fall short of the 20-yard line will result in a penalty, where the ball will then be placed

on the kicking team’s 45-yard line. The other big one for kickoffs is that there are no more surprise on-side kicks. My favorite new rule is the point-after touchdown system. The NFL is mainly just kicking the extra point, hardly ever going for the two-point conversion. In the XFL, the scoring team will have the option to run a play from the two, five or 10-yard line, worth one, two and three points, respectively. No kicking plays are allowed. Personally, I love this. It creates the opportunity for unique scoring scenarios, unlike traditional football. Some of the same rules for kickoff apply to punting on fourth down. Punts that go out of bounds or in the opponents’ end zone will result in a “major” touchback and the ball will be placed on the 35-yard line. This means you can’t pin opponents at their own 2-yard line by the ball bouncing out of play. This new rule encourages teams to go for it more often on fourth down, which is always more exciting. The next rule regards forward passes. If a team completes a forward pass behind the line of scrimmage, that team may throw a second forward pass, as long as the ball has not crossed the line of scrimmage. Once the ball has passed the line of scrimmage, no more forward passes are allowed. The last, and maybe the biggest change is overtime. Overtime will consist of five rounds, staged in alternating single-play possession, just like a shootout in the NHL or MLS. A “round” will consist of one offensive play per team. Each possession starts at the opponent’s 5-yard line

and the offensive team has one play to score. The team with more points after five rounds is the winner. Each successful score is worth two points and the defensive team cannot score. If the offense fails, the play is dead. There are lots of other rules about overtime, timing changes (25-second play clock) and what they call “common sense rules” on their official website. I didn’t cover nearly all of it, so I encourage you to go check it out because they actually use videos of what a play might look like as well which is very helpful. All the new rules may seem overwhelming and confusing, but at least it’s going to be exciting. I enjoy most, if not all, the rule changes that I’ve read through. They all lead up to a new faster, more thrilling and joyful to watch style of football, and that’s what it’s all about. I hope the XFL sticks around and I hope people actually care about it. Everyone claims they want more football, but don’t always want to show it any love in the spring. When the Alliance of American Football was around, people thoroughly enjoyed it and the XFL initially gained viewership. Getting people in is pretty easy because everyone wants to see the new thing, but keeping those people around is the big issue. Will the XFL be able to overcome their past and actually stick around for a while? I think so and really hope so. Week 1 actions kicks off this weekend with four games airing on ABC, FOX and ESPN. And as always, let’s go BattleHawks!

Andy Reid cements his name in the NFL Hall of Fame josh purnell courier staff

The wait is finally over as Andy Reid won his first Super Bowl championship in his 21-year career. The Kansas City Chiefs’ 31-20 comeback victory over the San Francisco 49ers means Reid is no longer the winningest head coach without a Super Bowl. He is now ranked sixth on the NFL's all-time winning list. His coaching record is currently 207 regular season wins and 15 postseason wins. Marty Scottenheimer is now the winningest coach without a Super Bowl as he is ranked seventh on NFL’s all-time winning list. The Chiefs, who were down 20-10 in the third quarter, had everyone around the world thinking this game was over. Well, not Reid nor the Chiefs players. Reid, who is considered one of the greatest offensive-minded coaches ever, found a way to reel the Chiefs back in the game, scoring 21 unanswered points for the victory. For years, there was never a doubt if he could lead a team to the playoff, but there was always the doubt about if he could win the big one.

Well, those doubts are finally over: with a Super Bowl

Super Bowl and that’s Buffalo Bills head coach Marv Levy. Levy appeared in four straight Super Bowls in the 1990s and lost them all. Reid received his first coaching gig with the Green Bay Packers under head coach Mike Holmgreen. He started off as an offensive assistant and

for the Philadelphia Eagles. Reid spent 14 seasons as the Eagles’ head coach, making it to the playoffs nine times and making an appearance in the Super Bowl only once. That one Super Bowl appearance was in 2004. The Eagles had players like Donovan McNabb, Terrell Owens, Brian Westbrook and

Brian Dawkins. That team was stacked and was the clear-cut favorite to win the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, the Eagles came up short,

losing to the New England Patriots 32-29. Reid has now been with the Kansas City Chiefs for seven seasons, making an appearance in the playoffs six times and finally winning one Super Bowl. It’s been 15 years since Reid was last in the Super Bowl. So, this Super Bowl victory means quite a lot to him. “I’m really excited about it,” Reid said. “You get one, you want to go get another one. But we’ve got to backpedal for about a minute and enjoy this one and then we’ll get busy on the next one.” The players on the Kansas City Chiefs all wanted Reid to get his first Super Bowl victory. They knew how much it would mean to him and mean to themselves as well. “We wanted to get him that trophy because he deserved it,” Patrick Mahomes said. “The work he puts in day in and day out … I don’t think he sleeps. I try to beat him in and I never can. He is someone that works harder than anyone I’ve ever known, and he deserved this. I’m glad I could get that trophy for him.” There is no doubt Reid is going to the Hall of Fame, but his Hall of Fame story isn’t over. Reid planned to be around a little while longer. The question now is, how many more Super Bowls can Reid and the Chiefs win?

Andre Iguodala attempts to control trade market

Andre Iguodala gazes into the crowd.

With the NBA trade deadline looming ahead, the most notable person almost guaranteed to move cities is Memphis Grizzlies forward Andre Iguodala. He has yet to play a single minute for the Grizzlies in hopes the team would trade him. However, now Iguodala is claiming he will sit out the entire season if no trade happens before Thursday’s deadline. Iguodala and the Grizzlies seemed to have a mutual interest in sending away the dominant wing, but Iguodala is causing problems. He is currently claiming he will sit out the rest of the season if not dealt to one of the two L.A. teams. This drops his value by a large margin to any other teams in the NBA, limiting the Grizzlies’ options in a return package. It seems as if the Grizzlies will not get a valuable return for Iggy but should be happy with anything. The Lakers’ most valuable trade asset would be Kyle Kuzma. The Grizzlies would have a large interest in acquiring Kuzma, but the money does not line up. The Lakers would have to send Danny Green along with Kuzma to make the financials work, but would they be willing to get rid of two back up wings, for just one in return? There are other ways to make a deal work out, but any deal would almost have to include Kuzma for the Grizzlies to be

seriously interested. The Los Angeles Clippers, on the other hand, have more trade assets and are the favorites to land Iguodala. They still own their firstround pick for the 2020 NBA draft and have had issues with Montrez Harrel. The power forward is averaging a career high in points, rebounds and is one of the most efficient players at his position. He will be a free agent next year looking to strike while the iron is hot. Memphis will have the second most cap space to sign potential free agents but could make a move to obtain Harrel now to continue their playoff push. The Clippers may not want to part with a dominant inside presence knowing they lack depth at that position. They would be more willing to part with Mo Harkless and some young assets to get Iguodala. I do believe that the Grizzlies will not make a deal unless Harrel is involved in the package. The problem with all of this is where Darren Collison fits in. After prematurely retiring in the off-season, he said that he would relaunch his NBA career for one of the two L.A. teams. The Lakers seem to be the favorite to sign the veteran ball handler but have yet to come to terms on a deal. This would be an added cost to the teams that are already limited in cap space attempting to trade for

a player that will add $14 million to the books. The current Grizzlies on the roster seem ready to move on from Iguodala. Dillon Brooks said in an interview that he cannot wait until they trade Iguodala so he can show him what Memphis basketball is truly about. Ja Morant backed the claim on social media, starting a small social media frenzy between him and future hall of famer Steph Curry. Either way, I think all parties involved want to see Iggy move. The trade deadline is Thursday. Many competing teams are looking to add a piece to continue a playoff push. Iguodala may no longer be an option for many teams that may have been interested, but there are still players that are being looked at. Robert Covington has been involved in a number of conversations as a possible trade asset. Derrick Rose has been quietly whispered in corners as a player that can make a difference for competing teams. The Denver Nuggets have been actively shopping Malik Beasley to anyone interested. In fact, their roster of young talent has attracted many teams to put in calls asking for possible trades. Gary Harris has been involved in trade talks as well. The trade deadline is looming, and in only a few short months the playoffs will start. Buckle up.

Women's golf wraps up day one of Mid-American Match Play Challenge By Jake VanZuiden courier staff On Monday, the Western Illinois women’s golf team took the course for the first time in over three months. They headed to Lakewood Ranch, Fla. to compete in the Mid-American Match Play Challenge, their first action since Oct. 29. With so much preparation time over winter break, the Purple and Gold came out to show that all their hard work on their individual games had paid off. Aside from Western Illinois, the two-day event hosted by Bowling Green University featured 10 other competing schools: Florida Gulf Coast University, Ohio University, Western Michigan University, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Morehead State University, University of Akron, Purdue University Fort Wayne, Northern Illinois University and Illinois State University. For the tournament format, the No. 11 Leathernecks squared off with the No. 6 Western Michigan in Monday’s fourth match of the tournament with the winner moving on to face No. 3 Eastern Michigan and the loser moving to the consolation bracket. With some help from sophomore Abbie Gault, the Purple

and Gold gave Western Michigan a run for their money but ended up falling just short. Gault was the only Leatherneck to score an individual victory, defeating Alissa Fish of WMU with two holes left to play. Freshman Katie Tanner was toe-to-toe with WMU’s Cameron Lucia

Abbie Gault was the only Leatherneck to pick up a victory. as they were tied on several occasions throughout the match, but Lucia pulled ahead late for the victory. Cassidy Jurkaites, Emily Marrs and Natalie Hooper all lost their individual matchups, respectfully. Overall, the Leathernecks were defeated by Western Michigan by a score of 4-1. However, things were better for Western in the sec-

ond round against Ohio University. While they still ended up dropping this one to the Bobcats 3-2, it was a bit closer than the score indicates. Gault played her best golf once again, beating Ohio’s Maria Howard with ease (4 and 3). Jurkaites was the other Leatherneck to score a victory, defeating Alicia Provasnik of Ohio by a 2 and 1 decision. Director of Golf and Western head coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen wished they could have pulled out at least one team victory on Day 1 of the event, but acknowledged the positives from her team’s play. “The team played better this afternoon but just missed winning the third match for the team win in the second round,” Lukkarinen said in an interview with WIU Athletics Communications. “We would have been happy with our scores in stroke play, so we will work on finishing strong tomorrow.” While this didn’t necessarily shape up to the strong start to the 2020 Spring season the Purple and Gold had hoped for, they’ll look to build on their performance heading into the next event. The Leathernecks will have just under three weeks to hone their approaches before competing in the Alabama State Spring Golf Kickoff in Montgomery, Ala. on Feb. 23.
