Students flocked to North Quad Saturday to experience one of Western Illinois University’s largest, muddiest and messiest traditions. University Housing and Dining Services hosted the 16th annual Bayliss-Henninger Mud Volleyball tournament.
The tournament consisted of two leagues, competitive and fun, as 39 teams went head-to-head to see who were the ultimate champs of playing in the mud. Students not enjoyed the game but had a blast jamming to music, eating food, tie-dying shirts and jumping down a 60-foot water slide. Jeff Waisganis, Tanner 7
Resident Assistant and mud volleyball champion, highly encourages making it out to events hosted on campus like this. “Mud Volleyball is a great event that we host early in the year so that incoming students have a chance to meet new people,” said Waisganis. “Also have the chance to build a community with their
floor or have a great time with their friends.” Leatherneck pride is something Waisganis holds near and dear to him and wishes to spread that with his residents and the rest of the Western community. “By showing up you get to be a part of a tradition that happens annually and one that benefits our local fire
department,” Wasiganis said. “It’s a ton of fun each year and if you don’t like getting muddy we offer other alternatives like the water side and die dye station.” UHDS requires a $5 participation fee to help provide the funds for the fire department. This year 39 teams took the court, raising over $1,000 for the Macomb Fire Department.
BOT Approves Continuation of Presidential Contract MACOMB/MOLINE, IL — The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees approved the continuation of WIU President Jack Thomas' contract at its August 24 Board meeting on the Macomb campus. Thomas' contract has been in place since 2011 when he was named president, and that contract will continue to govern, according to BOT Chair Carolyn EhlertFuller. There will be no changes to Thomas' salary or benefits. “This has been a difficult year for all at WIU, and we appreciate that President Thomas has held steady throughout. We awaited completion of the academic reorganization plan and we are pleased with its content and announcement on July 16. Now we
look for a very aggressive and timely implementation to be led by President Thomas,” stated Ehlert-Fuller. “Further, the Board and the president will focus on a strong year of engaging in a comprehensive, rigorous assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of both campuses, which is needed to fully understand what more is necessary to move forward successfully. This examination will attempt to leave no stone unturned. “We look for a year of stability in getting things done,” EhlertFuller added. The next regular meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held Sept. 27-28 in Macomb. Story provided by University Relations
