Kobe Bryant and daughter, Gianna, among nine dead in helicopter crash By Devon Greene editor-in-chief

Former NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others are dead after a helicopter crash in Calabasas, Calif. on Sunday.  According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Fire Department received a call at 9:47 a.m. of a possible helicopter crash on the hills overlooking Calabasas. When they arrived on the scene, firefighters discovered a quarter-acre brush fire and all passengers were pronounced dead on the scene. The names of the remaining passengers have yet to be released. The investigation into the cause of the crash is still being investigated by local police, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.  According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Kobe was on his way to a travel basketball game with Gianna, one of her teammates, their parent and the other remaining passengers. The names of the other passengers are yet to be released. Gianna was a basketball player who had hopes of playing in the WNBA and hoped to carry on the Bryant name into the future of women’s professional basketball.   Kobe was praised as one of the greatest minds to ever step foot on the hardwood in the history of the NBA and became an international icon over the course of his life and career.  Children yelled “Kobe” when shooting crumpled up paper into trash cans, bit on their jerseys to mimic the shooting guard and plastered posters on their walls. His brand was rivaled only by fellow NBA stars LeBron James and Michael Jordan.  He played his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers and retired in 2016 in one of the most legendary final games in the history of the NBA with a 60-point performance against the Utah Jazz. Kobe won five championships with the Lakers, is top five in scoring in NBA history and was the youngest play-

er in history to reach 30,000 career points. April 13 was named “Mamba Day” in remembrance of the day when Kobe “Bean” Bryant laced up his shoes for the final time as an active member of the NBA.

It’s hard to accept,” former Laker Earvin Magic Johnson said. “He was such an icon but also did so much for LA. He was passionate about serving the homeless and was an advocate for women’s basketball. Coaching his daughter’s basketball team brought him so much happiness.”  Players from around the NBA joined the former Lakers to remember Kobe.  “I am in shock over the tragic news of Kobe’s and Gianna’s passing,” Kobe’s selfproclaimed idol, Jordan said. “Words can’t describe the pain I’m feeling. I loved Kobe - he was like a little brother to me.”   “I’m stunned,” former Chicago Bulls forward Scottie Pippen said on Twitter. “Words can’t even come close to describing it. Just an incredibly sad and tragic day.”   “Man I don’t even know where to start,” Philadelphia center Joel Embiid said.  “I started playing ball because of Kobe after watching the 2010 Finals. I had never watched ball before and that Finals was the turning point of my life. I wanted to be like Kobe.”   The NBA’s Player’s Association released a statement on Sunday.  “We are stunned and devastated by the news of the sudden passing of Kobe Bryant,” the statement read. “Words cannot express his impact on our players, the NBA and the game of basketball. This is a monumental loss for the entire basketball community and our hearts are quite simply broken. We send love and prayers out to his wife Vanessa and the entire family.”

Commissioner of the NBA, Adam Silver also released a statement. “The NBA family is devastated by the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna,” the statement read. “For 20 seasons, Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with an absolute devotion to winning. He was one of the most extraordinary players in the history of our game with accomplishments that are legendary: five NBA championships, an NBA MVP award, 18 NBA All-Star selections and two Olympic gold medals. But he will be remembered most for inspiring people around the world to pick up a basketball and compete to the very best of their ability. He was generous with the wisdom he acquired and saw it as his

mission to share it with future generations of players, taking special delight in passing down his love of the game to Gianna. We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Vannessa, and their family, the Lakers organization and the entire sports world.” Athletes from all sports cite Kobe as a huge influence in their game and why they chose to play sports at all. Kobe’s work ethic has been praised as one of his greatest characteristics. His mantra of “Mamba Mentality” was something that players across the entire sports world tried to tap into, in order to take their game to the next level. “Kobe you were my idol… period,” Baker Mayfield, quarterback for the Cleveland Browns tweeted. “Mentality through and through. Kobe began playing basketball when he was 3 years old and was a lifelong fan of the Lakers. He played high school basketball in Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Penn. where he led his basketball team to their first state championship in 53 years. After his senior year in high school, Bryant made the decision to go directly in the NBA, he was only the sixth player in NBA history to do so. The NBA had several games planned on Sunday and decided to follow through with the scheduled games with a moment of silence held before each game. In one of the first games following the announcement, the Toronto Raptors took a 24-second violation to honor the number of the

NBA legend. However, some players decided they were unable to compete after the announcement. One of these players was Brooklyn Nets’ point guard Kyrie Irving, who had a close relationship with Kobe. In an interview in 2016, with Micah Peters of the Ringer, Bryant spoke about his mortality and his relationship with death. “Comfortable,” Kobe said. “It’s a comfortable one and an understanding. You can’t have life without death. You can’t have light without the dark. It’s an acceptance of that and when it came down to decide whether or not I should retire, that’s really an acceptance of mortality that all athletes face.” Kobe is survived by his wife Vanessa, 17-year-old daughter Natalia, 3-year-old daughter Bianka and 7-month-old daughter Capri.

Former Leatherneck soccer player signs professional contract By Bradley Piros sports editor

CHATANOOGA, Tenn. – Fouryear Leatherneck Tim Trilk signed a professional contract with Chattanooga Red Wolves SC on Friday (Jan. 24). Trilk was ranked as the No. 6 goalkeeper in the NCAA after his final season with the Leathernecks. Trilk’s former head coach and Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson was proud of his accomplishments. “I am very happy for Tim,” Johnson told WIU Athletics Communications. “He paid his dues both in the classroom and on the field the last four years. His dream to continue playing after college has come true and I am very proud of his accomplishments.” Trilk left a legacy at Western and set some records along the

way over the course of his fouryear tenure. In his senior season for Western, he finished second in The Summit League and sixth in the NCAA with a 90-save campaign. That statistic led him to two Summit League Defensive Player of the Week awards as well as a First Team AllLeague selection. Trilk finished with four Defensive Player of the Week nominations, which tied the program record. Trilk played 49 games for the Leathernecks, logging over 4,700 minutes. He played 4.733:13 to be exact, which marks fourth in program history. He made 201 saves, which is good for eighth in program history and boasted a .705 save percentage. He finished his time at Western with a 14-29 career record and eight shutouts. On top of all his soccer related accolades, he also shined in the

classroom. He graduated last December with a 3.8 GPA as a hospitality management major and a Departmental Scholar. Head coach of the Red Wolves Jimmy Obleda, who was recently appointed coach on Nov. 21, 2019, was happy with his club’s new signing. “Tim is one of the best up and coming goalkeepers in the country,” Obleda told reporters. “He has great control and commands respect in his area. He also is very good with his feet, which is a great skill for the modern goalkeeper. We are happy to have him, and our goalkeeping position is in great hands.” Chattanooga Red Wolves SC were founded in 2018 and are part of the USL League One. Last season, the Red Wolves finished fifth out of 10 teams finishing with a 10-8-10 record.

Is Coronavirus the great plague of 2020?  There is a new sensation sweeping the world, but it’s no cute puppy video. It’s actually a deadly virus that originated in China that has been classified as a Coronavirus. A Coronavirus is a virus that typically affects animals but can occasionally move to infect humans. An example of other viruses that originate in animals include ebola and the flu. This particular coronavirus originated in the Huanan seafood market in the center of the Chinese city of Huanan. The city of Huanan, as well as other cities in China,

have since been placed under quarantine and are under lockdown. As mentioned previously, this virus can come to humans from animals, which explains why the original patients got it from a food market. It is possible that this particular strain may have come from snakes, but nothing has been confirmed yet. The effects of the Coronavirus are similar to those of the common cold. Though, it does present as an upper respiratory infection, which includes symptoms such as a cough, fevers and breathing difficulties. In severe cases, it

can be known to cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and as a result, the infection can also be fatal. The virus, to our knowledge so far, is spread by close contact with an individual that has the Coronavirus, or if someone with it coughs or sneezes near you. It is spread the same way any other virus such as the flu or common cold. So, prevention of the virus is the same as it is to avoid obtaining the flu or a cold. So far, the death toll from the Coronavirus is over 50 people just within the past week, as thousands more fall ill in China, and as cases of the virus are found elsewhere in the world. To date, there have been three confirmed cases in the United States in Washington, Illinois and California.

Other countries that have confirmed cases of the current Coronavirus are France, Nepal, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Canada. It is expected for the virus to continue to spread, but healthcare officials are racing to create a vaccine. As we entered 2020, many joked on social media about the plague of 2020, as there have been plagues in 1720, 1820 and 1920. In 1720, there was another round of the Bubonic plague that took place. In 1820, there was a Cholera pandemic that resulted in the death of over 100,000 people. Most recently in 1920, the Spanish Flu was to blame for the death of many. So, what exactly defines a plague? And could the Coronavirus be the plague of 2020? The dictionary definition of

"plague" from Oxford dictionary reads, "a contagious bacterial disease characterized by fever and delirium, typically with the formation of buboes (Bubonic plague) and sometimes infection of the lungs (pneumonic plague)." Obviously, if this Coronavirus were to be the next plague, it would be the latter type that causes pneumonia-like issues. While there has not yet been an international emergency declared, officials warn that the Coronavirus is something to watch and be cautious of. Doctors do not know how dangerous it is and won't know until they get more data and tests done. That said, it is hard to determine whether or not this may be the "plague of 2020" everyone was worried about, so I'll leave that to time and your own personal opinion to determine.

An overview of Neftlix’s “Marriage Story” Happily ever after usually doesn’t stay happy for long.  A chapter can end with a sweet little bow until the next chapter comes along and changes everything. Things that were once clear become confusing and clarity can come in the strangest of places. The one constant in an ever-continuing narrative is that life goes on. It goes on and on until you get sick of it and want to skip to the end to see the happily ever after, but the journey is about as important as the ending.

One of the main reasons I enjoyed the Oscar nominated film Marriage Story is that it shows the deterioration of a relationship, which we are all familiar with in some capacity. Whether it is a friendship, romantic relationship or a familial relationship, we all experience the ties that once bound us together fraying and eventually breaking. Sometimes the ties are clearly fraying in both directions, and there is an acknowledgment on both sides that the tie needs to be cut. Other

times, as in most times, there is denial and band-aid solutions to the tie fraying and it helps no one in the end. The problems just get worse and worse until there is a point of no return which could have been solved with more communication and compromise on both ends. Marriage Story starts with the happily ever after expiring, and what remains is the reality of the situation. The ties that bound the main couple in the film were not what each person needed, and were stifling to each other and everyone around them. The husband and wife in the film were exactly what they wanted out of life when they met, but not what they wanted or needed at the cur-

rent point of time they were in. The couple needed to navigate how they were still going to be a family, which includes their young son, while getting a divorce. Their honeymoon was far from over, and they needed to navigate who they were in the process of separating. Ending a relationship, especially a divorce with a kid involved, is one of the hardest things a person can do. The film showed how each person had their faults and that not one person was to blame for everything. They were ill-suited for each other and agreed to end their relationship with barely any screaming or yelling involved. The film felt less like a movie and more like real life be-

cause there is not always a dramatic exit or cheating involved for a deterioration of a relationship. Sometimes it is a mutual agreement for separation. Life goes on, not with a grand winner or loser, but with two people who are changed forever for knowing each other. Even in the sorrow and the chaos of leaving a relationship, there is something beautiful that comes out of it. A brand new kind of you that is smarter and wiser than before, one that is more open to new experiences and people. Once your heartbreak has healed, you’re ready for the next part of the journey called life. Happily ever after is just an excuse for a new chapter to begin in life.

Mac Miller’s final album is a fitting end   Miller passed in 2018 from an accidental drug overdose in his home in Studio City. Authorities reported that they found traces of fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol in his body, but after some investigation, it appeared that some drugs that he bought had been laced and caused his death.   This album is already being considered one of his top albums and a fitting end to a great career. Fans have been taking to social media to talk about this new album and the rage has caught on, with the album already making its way into the Billboard Top 200 list. Miller worked to improve his craft as his career went on going from a more immature type of music style to one the oozed sophistication. However, no matter where he was in his career, Miller ’s work was a thing of beauty.

At the time of his passing, Miller had started working on the album but was unable to finish it. Composer/ producer Jon Brion helped Miller on his 2018 album Swimming and was helping Miller to create Circles. After his death, Brion put together and finished the songs that had already been recorded. The album has 12 songs on it and lasts for 48 minutes.   The most buzz comes from the songs “Complicated,” “Once a Day” and “Woods” as all of these songs help to reassure messages that Miller tried to spread throughout his career. In “Complicated,” Miller talks about living in the moment and not looking too far forward into the future. In “Once a Day,” Miller talks about letting others in and not keeping his emotions to himself. Miller was known to have suffered from depression and this song serves

as a reminder to oth ers going through the same to open up and let people in. “Woods” talks about chasing love, even if that love is a risk and it might hurt you in the end. Miller felt strongly about not being afraid of chasing love and wanted others to feel the same. Miller ’s death was something that shocked a lot of people. He was an inspiration to many and without him still on this Earth, it’s hard to know how good he would have been. As his career progressed, so did his music, and before his death he was being considered to be one of the greats. His realism was something that attracted people to him, especially after coming out as having a drug problem. He was one of my favorite artists and it’s hard to believe that this will be the final pieces of his music that will be put out there. I know I’m not the only one who misses him.   So, as the semester starts to get into the swing of things and you have homework that needs to be done, pull up Circles and give it a listen. Miller passed away in 2018, leaving fans devastated.

Miller leaves fans one final gift with his posthumous album, Circles.

Taylor Swift documentary “Miss Americana” set to release  While always being noticeably open with fans and audiences, Taylor Swift has never shown herself in the way she does in new Netflix documentary, “Miss Americana.” The documentary, which is set to premiere on Jan. 31, 2020, promises to follow Swift as not only a performer, but as a woman. The film was created by filmmaker Lana Wilson and was screened at the icon-

ic Sundance Film Festival.  From a very young age, Swift was thrown into the spotlight. Since before she could drive a car, she had the entire world watching her every move. While the public may feel as if they already know her, this documentary is a new intimate look into the world Swift lives in behind closed doors. She shares what it feels like to be famous

and reveals that her life may not be all it is cracked up to be.  According to reviews, the film focuses on things that the star has kept hidden, such as her mother Andrea’s battle with cancer, an eating disorder and her innate need to feel loved by the public. In a way she has never done before, she has taken her career apart and broken it down, painting herself to be almost normal, as normal as a celebrity can really be.  As someone who has been a fan of Swift for about 11 years, I am excited to see her in a different light. I feel like she has always been open and

honest with her fanbase, but seeing trailers and reviews of the film reveal that there has always been so much more under the surface of the tweets, Instagram posts and paparazzi pictures. Even as she boasted about her baking career and consistently posted pictures of her cookies and snacks, she was struggling with an eating disorder and fighting to keep her size zero figure. She did share her mom’s battle with cancer with fans, but never shared it intimately or gave more than a small statement.  Whether you like Swift or not, you can’t argue with the fact that she’s lived a very dif-

ferent life from most people, even most other celebrities. Growing up in front of the camera cannot be easy, but the trailer shows that it can also be very isolating and that Swift’s relationships with her fans are therefore very valuable to her. It is hard to keep friends when they, along with the world, can see your every move and judge you for it. I think it is a brave move for Swift to finally let people into her life in this new and revealing way. I look forward to watching the documentary this week and gaining more of an insight into the lifestyle of one of the most iconic artists of this generation.

Remember to respect the classics   In 2020, many people’s movies that

they watch extend from what’s on Netflix to what’s new in the theatres. Though, there are many older movies from 2000 and before that are great films and that should get more attention than they do. Whenever I’m home for break, my mom has the tendency of making me watch older movies that she loves, and I’m not normally willing, but I typically have no say in the matter.   The newest movie that she showed me was Primal Fear, which is a legal thriller film that was released in 1996. This film is based on the novel Primal Fear by William Diehl. I won’t lie, I had absolutely no interest in watching this film, but once it was on, I really enjoyed it. This film follows defense attorney Martin Vail, as he takes on a new case. This case involves an altar boy who is accused of the murder of the archbishop in Chicago. As

the case unravels, so does the dark secrets of the church, though there is something much more sinister that begins to unfold. This film has a lot of twists, all the way until the very end and has a 75 percent critics rating from Rotten Tomatoes.   Another movie that we always watch around the holidays is It’s A Wonderful Life, a family Christmas drama that was released in 1946 by Liberty Films. This film follows George Bailey, a man whose problems seem to build and build until he finally decides to end his life. Though, he meets an unlikely friend in the process, Clarence, his guardian angel who is just trying to earn his wings. Clarence shows George what the place that he lives would be like had he never existed, and that it truly is a wonderful life. This movie has a 94 percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is well-deserved in my opinion.

Finally, a movie that my mom forced me to watch in high school but has stuck with me ever since. Pay It Forward is a drama that is based on the novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde and was released in the year 2000. This film follows 12-year-old Trevor McKinney as he embarks on an extra-credit assignment that his social studies professor gives him. The assignment is to “Think of an idea to change our world and put it into ACTION!” Trevor comes off with the concept of “Pay it Forward,” where he will help three people, who all help three more people, and the ripple will continue. This movie has a 40 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes, which I disagree with because I really enjoyed this film and its potential impact.  So, if you find yourself in need of films to watch on these cold winter days, consider trying something new! While old films can become outdated, these are three films that I have watched recently that I feel have aged well. Just keep in mind that there are concepts in them that may no longer be accurate today, as they were made many years ago. Consider watching an older film, even if it isn’t one of these!

The iconic Christmas classic, It’s A Wonderful Life, tells a tale of gratitude and family that remains relevant no matter how many years have gone by.

Remembering the legacy of the “Black Mamba” A kid holds a crumpled piece of paper in his hands. He looks over his shoulder at the trash bin about 10 feet away. He pivots on one foot, jumps and raises his arms above his head and flicks his wrist towards the bin and says one name, one statement, one legend: Kobe. Why? Because that name holds power, hope and inspires generations to be the best, just like him.  Bryant became one of, if not the, greatest basketball players ever. He claimed he was the best one on one player in the world and was constantly challenged, but never beaten, at least on record. The difference between Kobe and the rest of the world was not his skillset, but his mind.   For generations, philosophers and psychologists have attempted to define mentality and mindsets that lead to success or failure, but Bryant created his own. Most athletic stars attempt to build success off of their foundations, pure athleticism and hard work, but Bryant, well he did something else entirely. He created a persona, a character, but for him it

was who he truly was at heart, the Black Mamba. He claimed he got the idea for the nickname from “Kill Bill,” the Quentin Tarantino movie in which a deadly assassin was given the code name. The snake is known for its aggressiveness, deadly poison and surprise attacks, which made this nickname the perfect match for the legend. More than just being aggressive and talented, he used what he called “dark emotions” to bring greatness from others. He used his sadness, pain, frustration and rage as a weapon. “Once I discovered (letting my emotions on the basketball court) everything about the game changed," Bryant said. “Because now I understood that I could really lose myself through the game. And no matter what happens in life, I could always step onto the basketball court and let my game speak to that, step on the court and just absolutely erupt… The feeling of playing with that rage was new to me but I f-----g love it.”   Players going through a divorce, death of a friend,

idea of residents owning pets. Why not dive down the rabbit hole of questions? What does every animal need to do other than eat and sleep? They need to excrete their waste. Dogs urinate, desecrate and vomit. Yes, they can be trained quite well and some dogs will even learn the best place to go when an outside environment is unavailable, if trained right. Yes, one can teach a dog not to mark the carpets, but there is a grace period. There is an amount of time where the dog will urinate where it is not supposed to. Outside of L.A., Bryant was not well liked. He dominated your team and had no mercy. He never let up and he let the world know he knew he was the best. That is not a recipe to gain a large following, but it meant everyone knew him. He was one of the most hated men in all of basketball, but nearing the end of his career that all changed. The last day of his NBA career, a commercial was aired for the first time. After hitting a buzzer beater, the fans start to chant “Kobe sucks!” The lights go dark and Bryant becomes a conductor. One by one, he puts a spotlight on different fans of different teams singing about their hate towards him. More and more people join in as Kobe’s smile grows. He becomes content, and happy with the hate-filled audience. He loves the hate, and always did.  Now the world loves him and will surely miss him. The world has been changed thanks to Bryant, the Black Mamba. Hopefully, everyone will learn what It’s like to hold the mamba mentality.

While carpet is a cheap material, large scale replacement is not cheap, especially if the university needs to hire a contractor to fix the water damage. What about animals in areas like Currens’ concrete lecture halls? Western would need to hire more janitorial staff in order to compensate with the amount of work they would be doing on a constant rate. In order to pay them, the

money would have to come from somewhere. People wouldn’t exactly be ecstatic to find out that their tuition is being raised. There is also a lack of consideration past a financial point that could turn into a financial issue. What about people who are deathly allergic to fur? Are we expected to enact a policy that would ultimately make it almost impossible for them to live in the dorms? Even past that is the trivialization of those who need emotional support animals. not limited to, anxiety disorders and depression. One is apparently expected to look past this, though, based off of a statistic about “low-level homesickness” and a philosophy of ‘I get what I want.’ The idea of comparing small case homesickness to anxiety disorders, that otherwise result in physical manifestations, is outwardly inconsiderate. I digress. Western Illinois University is a business, it is run like one. The financial risk by far outweighs any sort of short lived academic gain for a “pet friendly” campus to be even considered.

Seniors show out on Senior Day By Bradley Piros sports editor MACOMB, Ill. — The Western Illinois University men’s and women’s swim teams took part in their final home meet of the season on Saturday and therefore celebrated Senior Day, showing respect to the seven Leathernecks that will be graduating this year. Five of those seven were able to pick up a win in one of the many events on the day which pleased head coach Scott Johannsen. “I was very happy with today’s results,” Johannsen told WIU Athletic Communications after the meet. “We got to recognize our seniors and thank them for their contributions. It was a fun day.” Senior Brennan Bladel kicked things off by taking first place in the 100meter back with a time of 52.56 seconds and was followed up with another first place finish from senior Connor Owens in the 100-meter breast, clocking in at 1:00.47. Sophomores Adam Peterson and Tyler Cunningham each picked up a win to try and help out. Peterson clocked in with a blistering time of 21.22 seconds in the 50-meter free while Cunningham finished with a

time of 1:49.01 in the 200-meter free. Even with those four individual wins, it still wasn’t enough as the Leathernecks were edged out 114-84 in the dual meet against Truman State. The women, on the other hand, were able to pick up their first team win of the season by a score of 111-103. Senior Miranda Mathus did her part by securing first in the 100-meter back with a time of 1:02.6. Her teammate, freshman Olivia Leslie, finished right behind her at 1:02.81 to take second. Sophomores Samantha Kessinger and Keelie Shuck lit it up in the diving events to help reach their first win of the season. Kessinger took first in the 1-meter dive (198.30) and Shuck bested her competition in the 3-meter dive (183.90). Senior Casey Roberts was the only Leatherneck to pick up two victories on the day. She did so in the 50-meter free (25.05) and the 100-meter free (56.34). Both the men and the women will travel cross state to Charleston, Ill. on Feb. 1. The men will take part in a dual meet with the Panthers of Eastern Illinois University while the women will compete in a tri-meet with both EIU and the Butler Bulldogs. Both meets start at 1 p.m. this Saturday. Twitter: @bradjp08

Illini headline surprises in college hoops

The NCAA college basketball season is well underway, as teams are in the middle of conference play. The non-conference portion of the season has seen some great games and some unexpected teams rise to the top. All season long, the No. 1 spot in the rankings has been bouncing around between teams, with one team not able to stick with the coveted position for long. In fact, six teams have held the top spot in the AP rankings in the first 10 weeks, and there probably will be seven different teams in the first 11 weeks. Powerhouses, like Michigan State, Duke and Louisville, have all held the spot, but this year has been rough on the number ones. They all seem to have inexplicably lost to teams that they shouldn’t have. The most recent team to lose the number one overall ranking

wasn’t due to an unexplainable loss. Gonzaga has held the No. 1 spot the longest this season for four consecutive weeks in a row. However, with a weaker conference and not too much meat left in their schedule until the Big Dance, the Bulldogs lost the spot to a team that has been trending upwards all season long: Baylor. The Bears have earned this top spot with some big wins, including wins over No. 3 Kansas and No. 21 at the time Texas Tech. Both of these wins can be credited to the fact that Baylor plays in a tougher conference than Gonzaga. The biggest surprise from this NCAA season is what is happening in the Big Ten. For the first time in 15 years, the Fighting Illini are leading the Big Ten. This comes after Michigan State was unanimously projected to not only

win the conference, but make it to the Final Four. Tom Izzo’s squad looked ready to do just that, but have fallen short of some major wins, especially in non-conference play, losing to Kentucky in the season opener and then falling to Duke later on. Now obviously, those are two losses to two great establishments, but the fact remains that their non-conference has seen the Spartans drop some tough games too. Illinois, on the other hand, has worked their way to a six game win streak, with half of the wins during this run being away games. The even more impressive part is that there’s only been 12 total wins for an opposing team in the Big Ten this season. That means Illinois has a quarter of those wins, the highest among the conference. This is a team that is getting really hot and really dangerous at the right time. With not a lot of people giving them much credit, the Illini still are playing with a chip on their shoulder, which is something that is only going to help them extend their cur-

rent win streak. When it comes time to put on your dancing shoes, look for Illinois to be there too, for the first time since 2013. Another major storyline from this NCAA season is Memphis. Coach Penny Hardaway came back to his alma mater in hopes of turning the program, who hasn’t had a high profile recruit since Derrick Rose, around. And turn around Hardaway did. He wasted no time getting a great recruiting class, good enough for the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation for 2019. From there, the Tigers were projected to go far this season, with the possibility of hoisting the trophy in Atlanta. Those dreams went to the wayside, however, when the NCAA suspended the Tigers star player, James Wiseman, for receiving money from boosters. But not just any boosters; they were from Hardaway himself. Hardaway made a payment to Wiseman’s mom in 2017, but since he had already made donations to Memphis, he was considered a booster.

Given a 12-game suspension, Wiseman decided to leave the university, just as the season was getting going. This hurt the Tigers’ chance of going far and they seem to have fallen off the map. Ranked 21st in the nation, it will be an uphill battle for Hardaway’s team to put itself back into title contention. But, with a newer coach and a still starstudded lineup, they should be able to make a run. It also helps that the team is in a weaker conference. Look for them to make a run come March. Ultimately, this season still has a long way to go. I don’t know who will make it to Atlanta, but I know one thing: college basketball is all about momentum. Watch out for those teams that often fall under the radar but are just as dangerous as anybody in the field. The same applies to Blue-Bloods like Duke or Kentucky. So, as we start to settle back into the groove of another semester, make sure to take the time to sit down and watch some college basketball. You won’t regret it.

Top three landing spots for Tom Brady josh purnell courier staff

Tom Brady is most certainly coming back for the 2020 season. Unfortunately, given his age and contract with the New England Patriots, his time with the Patriots could possibly come to an end. Brady spent the last 19 seasons as a New England Patriots quarterback, leading them to nine Super Bowl appearances and winning six. Last summer, Brady signed a two-year $70 million contract extension. Part of that deal does not allow the Patriots to franchise tag him, so assuming Brady and the Patriots don’t come to a final deal by March 18, that would make Brady an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. That would end the greatest dynasty in sports history. Seeing some of the greatest quarterbacks play for a different team is always weird, but we’ve seen it happened. Peyton Manning went from the Indianapolis Colts to the Denver Broncos. Joe Montana went from the San Francisco 49ers to the Kansas City Chiefs. But the big question is, if Brady does become a free agent, where will he go? I have my top three teams that I think Brady should go to. 1. Chicago Bears The Bears are a big market with a need for a quarterback. It would be incredibly impossible for Brady to come to Chicago based on cap situation and Mitchell Trubisky,

who has one year left on his contract. Ryan Pace, the gener-

prove the Bears can still win with Trubisky. So, it’s highly possible that the Bears will be resigning him. But, if Brady is willing to discuss a deal, the Bears might scoop Trubisky to the side. Everyone knows how great the defense is, also everyone knows the Bears

al manager of the Bears drafted Trubisky, and he wants to

are one quarterback away from a chance to get to the

Super Bowl. 2. LA Chargers The Los Angeles Chargers have been surfing in the media all season long. The Chargers would be the perfect team for Brady simply because he’s from California. The only difference is that he will have bet-

ter receivers in Keenan Allen and Mike William. Melvin

Gordon and Hunter Henry are out and the offensive line is not good. Defensively, they still have Melvin Ingram, Joey Bosa and Casey Hayward. Unfortunately, the Chargers are not respected in California. So, the only good Brady can do for the Chargers is high ticket sales. But, if Brady does go to the Chargers, they are guaranteed playoff contenders. Phillip Rivers has been with the Chargers for 15 seasons and has not led the Chargers to one Super Bowl. The Chargers have always been an underachieving team. Could Brady turn that around? 3. Indianapolis Colts Everyone was stunned when Andrew Luck announce his retirement. Jacoby Brissett had a decent season for a backup. He threw 2,942 yards and 18 touchdowns. The Colts have some great offensive pieces; TY Hilton at receiver, tight end Eric Ebron and running back Marlon Mack. What the Colts have, and the Bears and Chargers don’t, is an offensive line. Colts have the best offensive line in the league, which is why Brissett and Mack had a decent season. Their defense is not the best, but they are slowing finding their identity. They have a great linebacker in Darius Leonard. The Colts are better off without Brady because they are a stable organization. They have the 13th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, so they could draft a future franchise quarterback. Depending on how desperate the Colts are, they might sign Brady and if so, they are automatically playoff contenders.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Redshirt sophomore Danni Nichols went off for another career-type day, scoring 26 points, but in the end, it was a slow offensive start to the game by the Leathernecks (11-10, 5-3) that would ultimately turn into a 77-71 setback at North Dakota (13-8, 4-4). Western Illinois found itself down 22-12 after a quarter, with the host Fighting Hawks’ lead peaking at 19-8 with roughly two minutes to go in the period. Nichols had eight of her 26 in the opening 10 minutes. The Leathernecks managed to turn it around in the second quarter, not only out-scoring the Hawks, they also held them to 12 points in the second. The only negative that comes out of that is Western Illinois had 13. Doing the math puts Western Illinois down 34-25 at half. North Dakota came out firing on all cylinders out of the halftime locker room, putting up 25 points. The third quarter saw both teams essentially trading baskets, with no real extended stoppage in scoring coming until around the 3:00 mark of

the quarter. Olivia Kaufmann got a free throw with 49 seconds to go in the period, and that left Western Illinois needing to make up a 16-point deficit headed to the final 10 minutes of play. They did all they could. Elizabeth Lutz put up a three just nine seconds in to get the ball rolling, responded to with a 7-0 North Dakota run. That was just the tip of the iceberg. The fourth quarter truly became a game of runs. Nobody was backing down. Kaufmann made a jumper inside the lane with 2:38 to go to bring the Leathernecks within nine, and a three of Kaufmann’s made it a six-point game with 1:25 to go, but that would be as close as they’d get. An impressive 28 points went up on the board, but was just barely not enough, as the Leathernecks would fall by that six point spread. Western Illinois had a fourgame win streak snapped with the loss. A key series awaits on both Thursday and Saturday, as South Dakota State and North Dakota State will be in Western Hall. The South Dakota State game tips at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, and the North Dakota State game tips at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Leathernecks lose to North Dakota in up hill battle By Michael Harms courier staff

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The Western Illinois University Leathernecks watched helplessly as the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks shot 33 uncontested shots. That was the ultimate difference between the two Summit League teams as the Hawks grabbed the win, 83-77. It is never easy to win on the road in The Summit League and the Leathernecks were behind almost all of the game. Head coach Billy Wright was proud of his team’s effort but stated on GoLeathernecks.com. “We just couldn't overcome the disparity at the free throw line.” As a team, the green and white shot 78 percent from the line for about a third of their 83 points. The player of the game was Marlon Stewart. He finished with his second doubledouble of the season scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He now has 15 straight games with at least 10 points. Thirteen of his points came from the free throw line. Stewart was just one of four Fighting Hawks to score in

double figures. Filip Rebraca took advantage of soft defense from the Leathernecks and scored 21 points, shooting seven of 14 from the field. De’sean AllenEikens totaled 17 points while grabbing more offensive rebounds with five and four defensive. Finally, Kienan Walter got hot from deep, shooting 3-4 from beyond the arc on his way to 15 total points. All in all, it was a balanced attack from the Fighting Hawks who earned the win with tough play through the entire game. The Leathernecks were playing catch-up from what seemed to be the opening tip. After a few good jumpers from Kobe Webster and Zion Young, the Leathernecks found themselves in the lead, 9-8. Then they let the Hawks go on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. They fought back, getting inside and kicking out to their shooters. The team ended with 26 points in the paint and 30 from the three point line. Down the stretch of the first half, the team relied on Webster. He tallied up a quick 15 points while each of the other starters had two fouls.

He nailed a mid-range jumper at the buzzer to bring his team within five headed into halftime. The defensive change the green and white made at the break must have been all focused on stopping Webster. He only scored two points in the final half to finish with a team high 17. Out of halftime, the Hawks came rolling and thundering. They made three quick triples and went on a 13-0 run to bust open their lead. The Leathernecks continued to battle back this time with C.J. Duff leading the charge. After missing his only shot in the first half, he started to show his senior leadership. He scored 12 second half points during the Leathernecks comeback efforts. He was helped by Anthony Jones off the bench who finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Jones hit a three pointer to bring the game within five with just under 10 minutes to play. The team just could not close the gap and now sits with a 2-6 conference record. Their next game is against North Dakota State who sit just a half game out of first place in The Summit League. Tip off is 7:30 p.m.
