JULY 4 PARADE IN STONINGTON
Harkness Memorial State Park
Long Point
NEW LONDON, GROTON, MYSTIC, STONINGTON, N. STONINGTON, & PAWCATUCK, CT Travel winding roads lined with historic stonewalls, salt-air blowing through your hair, and discover Southeastern Connecticut’s refreshing summer getaways. Nestled among panoramic water views, Southeastern Connecticut’s small cities, towns and boroughs host a treasure-trove of activities. Walk historic waterfronts, kayak through serene estuaries, peruse art galleries or discover the nightlife. Let the rich maritime history of the area lure you out to sea on a fishing expedition, lobster cruise or daylong private charter. Hike or bike through green vistas and shaded groves of the area’s scenic state parks. Taste the legacy of Connecticut’s rich colonial farming history at local farmer’s markets or sample Connecticut vintages along the Connecticut Wine Trail. If you’re craving a sensational nightlife,
see what’s in the cards at Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods casinos where comedy clubs, hot dance scenes and world-class entertainment will keep you going ’til dawn. Founded in 1646, “The Whaling City” of New London is home to the Joshua Hempsted House, the oldest documented frame building in North America. Take steps along Connecticut’s Freedom Trail and visit the Robert Mills US Custom House & Museum, the oldest continuously operating U. S. Custom House in the country, where the slave ship, Amistad, was first brought in 1839, and where the first action was taken to free the slaves who had taken over that ship. Journey back in time following the Heritage Trail; 30 brass plaques set in the sidewalk will guide you along historic streets lined with 18th and 19th century buildings.
Visit sites that welcomed famous and infamous revolutionary figures of American history, tour the Shaw-Perkins Mansion where George Washington slept or view the schoolhouse where Nathan Hale taught before enlisting in the Connecticut militia. Just outside of downtown New London, stand in the Ye Antientest Burial Ground, founded in 1652, where many early settlers are interred and some of the oldest-known graves of early Black colonists can be found. It is from this scenic hillside that Benedict Arnold is said to have stood to watch British troops conquer Fort Griswold. A short drive along the waterfront brings you to the massive granite fortifications of Fort Trumbull, a 19th Century hexagonal fort built in the Egyptian Revival style. Continued on page 8

SUMMER FUN GUIDE
May – September 2012
Continued from page 7
Enjoy boundless views of Long Island Sound and catch glimpses of local lighthouses studding the harbor’s edge. Just beyond the fort, visit Monte Cristo Cottage, the boyhood summer home of Eugene O’Neill, America’s only Nobel-Prize winning playwright. The charming Victorian cottage houses a permanent exhibition on the life and works of the dramatist and served as the setting for two of O’Neill’s most notable works, Ah, Wilderness! and Long Day’s Journey Into Night. If theater is your passion, enjoy Broadway shows, opera or memorable musical guests at Garde Arts Center and take in the complex’s stunning centerpiece Garde Theatre, once a 1920’s movie palace and now nationally recognized for it’s gorgeously restored Moroccan interior. View master works at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, seek out current and sometimes controversial work of local artists at Bank Street’s Hygenic Art Galleries or follow art that’s taken to the street in Hygenic’s Wall-to-Wall Mural project. While you’re out and about, don’t miss New London’s annual outdoor festivals. July hosts both Sailfest, New London’s largest festival featuring a 5K road race, fine crafts festival, amusement rides and a major fireworks display, as well as Fish, Tales, Tugs & Sails a celebration of children’s literature and the environment. No visit to Waterford would be complete without a day spent in Harkness Memorial State Park. Magnificent views of Long Island Sound stretch across the horizon, cool breezes make kite flying and picnicking favorite activities on the sweeping, seaside lawns. At the heart of the 230 acres park is Eolia, the Harkness family’s elegant summer mansion, surrounded by walled gardens brimming with summer color. Parasail over the Sound or take a charter tour to spot seals, bald eagles and get a mariner’s view of local lighthouses. At the nationally recognized Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, experience the work of some of the nation’s up-and-coming playwrights, actors and directors. If speed is your thing, visit Waterford Speedbowl for fast-paced NASCAR action.

Explore Long Island Sound with area experts at the University of Connecticut’s Project Oceanography at the scenic Avery Point campus. Unique educational adventures include lighthouse expeditions and oceanographic research cruises. Back on land, bike your way along the scenic old shoreline farm in Haley Farm State Park, hike wooded trails and spectacular coastal pathways at Bluff Point Coastal Reserve or tee-off at one the area’s gorgeous golf courses. Mystic is the quintessential New England seafaring haven. Streets lined with one-of-a-kind boutique shops, art galleries and eateries cross the Mystic River at the historic Bascule Bridge. Creativity in Cloth BY TONY NUNES “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” So says famed designer Yves Saint Laurent. State and Elizabeth Lawrence live by the similar belief that style is essential to the expression of a woman’s creativity. They infuse this belief into their store, Clad in, a women’s clothing experience found in five locations from Mystic to Providence. A Clad in woman is a woman who enjoys fine clothing and shoes. She is more interested in cultivating her own individual style than being driven by a brand. Her wardrobe communicates that unique sense of self, an extension of her creative side. More than anything, a Clad in woman has a solid sense of confidence. Clad in owners State and Elizabeth Lawrence pride themselves in knowing their customers better than most. By taking a personal approach to accommodating their shoppers, they have transformed Clad in to a community of strong women bound by a similar interest in style. They bring this style into all five or their locations, each offering its own experience unique to the other four. At their flagship store in downtown Mystic, Clad in presents the newest seasonable fashions. Their clothing and separate shoe stores in Stonington Borough offer a different collection all together. Their Providence store in Wayland Square consists of yet an entirely separate collection of clothing and shoes. “Each store consists of their own collections, style and colors,” explains State Lawrence. “You won’t see in Mystic what’s in Stonington.” Behind the tall and industrial brick façade of Clad in’s Westerly outlet, items from past collections are collected and heavily discounted, providing a shopping experience that is a bit more diverse than the stores in Mystic, Stonington and Providence. Unlike most outlet stores, Clad in Westerly consists of actual items from past collections, not cheaply manufactured items created just for the outlet. Each of the over fifty designers Clad in sells presents an identifiable style. From the popular San Francisco designer Babette to artisans of clothing, shoes, scarves and jewelry from around the world, each Clad in store is beaming with only the finest styles. Lots of the designers Clad in specialize in are hard to find anywhere, let alone under the same roof. The styles they sell range from
everyday to formal or special occasion attire. The materials in the clothes they sell are not only stylish, but also feel good to the wearer, are easy to care for and drape well on the body. “Our clothes have a timeless, classic quality,” says State. “Each with its own distinct creative twist.” Clad in staffs its own stylists at each of their five locations. Their focus is to develop long-term relationships with all of their customers for all of their clothing needs throughout the year. As the seasons change Clad in stylists help their customers manage their wardrobes, assisting them in integrating multi-faceted looks into their closets. All of the stylists, some graduates of RISD, have a strong background in design. The artistry of design drives these artistic professionals to help their equally artistic customers develop the look that is best creatively suited to their personality. Clad in your style. The Clad in Outlet is located at 32 Friendship Street in Westerly, RI in a converted turn-of-the century industrial warehouse with plenty of free parking. You will find their flagship store in historic downtown Mystic at 24 W. Main with a dedicated shoe store on the second level. Or just down the road off Route 1 in the Stonington Borough, you will discover different clothing collections at Clad in at 158 Water Street and over 100 shoe styles next door at Clad in Shoes at 152 Water Street. The Clad in store in Providence with its own distinctive clothing and shoe collections is at 497 Angell Street. ■

Located on the banks of the Pawcatuck River, Westerly, RI pairs small town tranquility with first-class arts and culture. Art galleries, clothing boutiques and gift shops fill turn of the century buildings in the historic downtown. When hunger strikes, you’ll only be a few steps away from casual dining, distinctive coffee shops or comfortable bars where you’ll find the perfect cure for any craving. History buffs will want to meander past the gorgeous 1912 Beaux Arts style Westerly Train Station and, just up the street, the 1902 Armory with its restored granite crenellations. Also of interest will be tours of the 1734 Babcock-Smith House. Linger beneath the shade of heirloom trees in Wilcox Park, the 18 acre Victorian strolling garden at the heart of downtown. Stroll by flowerbeds, a vintage fountain, gazebo, fishpond and the Runaway Bunny statue, a favorite of local children. Here, in the heart of downtown Westerly, the community gathers to enjoy summer concerts and outdoor theatre. The famed Chorus of Westerly performs a Summer Pops concert, attracting over 25,000 people each June, and The Colonial Theatre invites you to bring a blanket or folding chair to Shakespeare in the Park throughout the month of July. Just steps away from the park, Granite Theatre stages uproarious comedy in the intimate setting of a restored church building. Discover local talent at The Artist Cooperative Gallery
of Westerly, which showcases works by area artists. During monthly Westerly-Pawcatuck Art Strolls, artist studios and local galleries open their doors to welcome the public. Memorial Day weekend, join artisans and art-lovers from across the region at the Virtu Art Festival in Wilcox Park. Bask in the joys of summer at Westerly’s River Glow event where street-performers roam the evening streets to the beat of a steel-drum band and over 30 floating bonfires light up the waters of the Pawcatuck River. Pumpkin painting, antique tractor parades, hay rides, and a Huck Finn look-alike contest are all part of the fun of Swamp Yankee Days in nearby Ashaway. Crandall Field fills with local crafters and vendors for this weekend event. Part of Westerly’s seven mile stretch of endless beaches, Misquamicut Beach is the largest state beach in the Ocean State. Sun lovers can body surf in sparkling salt water, toss Frisbees into the waves or simply bask on the white sand shore. With a modern pavilion offering concessions, a playground, and ample public facilities, it’s easy to spend a whole day at the beach! Amusement rides, water slides, mini-golf and go-carts along with surf shops, t-shirt stores and walk-up food huts make it an easy family favorite. concerts and activities designed to please the whole family. Blues on the Beach, Hermit Crab Races, Classic Car Cruises, Monday Night Jamz, and Movies on the Beach are just a few summer crowd pleasers. Be there on the Fourth of July for some of the best fireworks in the area. Admire the grandeur of stately summer homes and expansive ocean views in the quaint village of Watch Hill. For over a century, summer visitors have sought out the exclusive shops, restaurants and antique stores along the harbor side streets of this peaceful hide-away. Spend the day at one of Watch Hill’s three immaculate public beaches then gather at the village green gazebo to watch the sun set over the harbor or to listen to the free outdoor Summer Concert series. Children and the young at heart will be delighted by the Flying Horse Carousel, one of the oldest carousels in America. Children taking a spin on the hand-carved horses have a chance to grab a brass ring and secure another ride, gratis! Presiding over Watch Hill, the re-built Ocean House hints at a by-gone era of summer splendor and offers world-class dining and amenities. ■

Every day can feel like a lazy Sunday afternoon when you immerse yourself in the relaxing pace of coastal living. Spend the day combing the beach for shells, stopping only to fuel up on some of New England’s best chowder, fresh steamers or crab cakes. Drive the small highways and byways, braking for every farm stand, boutique and antique shop you come across. You’re sure to discover one-of-a-kind treasures and local treats to delight your senses. Heirloom vegetables, sunripened berries, homemade pies and jellies will bring the flavor of authenticity to your visit. Charter a fishing excursion or cast a line from a nearby jetty (you can get your fishing license online) and get a taste of the seas. Known as “the best kept secret in Rhode Island,” Charlestown offers miles of coastline and
casual summer ambiance. Along with all the boating, swimming and fishing fun visitors expect from a coastal get-away, Charlestown is also home to wildlife refuges and nature preserves that offer camping and hiking opportunities. Families will enjoy the diversion offered at Ninigret Park. Frolic in the swimming pond, play tennis, try-out the playground, or challenge each other to a game of Frisbee golf on the nine-hole course. Also found in the 227-acres park is the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge and Frosty Drew Nature Center and Observatory with opportunities to join a meadow walk, guided bird-watching tour or gaze at the stars. Nearby Burlingame State Park offers 3,100 acres of rocky woodland to explore with hundreds of campsites and 20 log cabins to call home.
Ninigret Park plays host to a spectacular line-up of summer entertainment. Find yourself under the big top when the Big Apple Circus brings merriment to town at the end of June and beginning of July. In August, the “gastronomic extravaganza” that is the Charlestown Seafood Festival serves up Rhode Island’s best lobster, steamers, chowder, fish & chips, clam cakes and in September, The Rhythm and Roots Festival fills the park Labor Day weekend with Zydeco, Cajun, blues, New Orleans R&B, swing, Americana, folk and roots music. Find another tradition of coastal summer entertainment in South Kingstown’s Theatre by the Sea where Broadway meets South County in a perfect marriage of professional theater’s “must-see” musicals and seaside relaxation. SUMMER FUN GUIDE
May – September 2012

First-class children’s entertainment and summer camp are also part of the play list. Visitors to Narragansett will find themselves swept away by the charm of this summer resort community. Narragansett Town Beach and Scarborough State Beach supply some of the best waves you’ll find for surfing or body surfing. Standing as sentinels on the seaside of Narragansett, you can’t miss the 1883 Narragansett Towers. Once a luxury resort and casino, the stone building with its signature arch now hosts live music and dancing, and opportunities to brush-up on your ballroom dancing at weekly classes. For an authentic New England experience, be sure to visit the working fishing village of Galilee. Watch from the docks as fishermen unload spoils of the sea or charter an opportunity to haul in your own catch of the day. Take part in the annual Blessing of the Fleet Festival in July, featuring a 10-mile road race, Seafood festival, and watercraft parade. Enjoy an afternoon exploring Wakefield’s historic downtown with its small, locally owned shops featuring one-of-a-kind artisan jewelry, furniture, clothing and fine art. When you need a chance to set
your shopping bags down, step into one of the distinctive restaurants and eateries for a gourmet meal, decadent dessert or refreshing beverage. In July, Wakefield skies fill with color. The Wakefield Rotary’s Annual South County Hot Air Balloon Festival features a kaleidoscope of activities including a craft show, petting zoo and, of course, hot air balloon rides. This year’s delicious addition is the Rhode Island State BBQ Championship Competition and Campus Cookoff. Celebrate the Fourth of July at Old Mountain Field for fireworks, live music and delicious barbeque. Need a chance to stretch your legs? Pedal, walk or skate your way through peaceful green scenery on the 5.6 mile South County’s William C. O’Neill Bike Path. Summer isn’t complete without a trip to the county fair. Richmond will host the 46th annual Washington County Fair in August complete with a pie-eating contest, livestock exhibits, and country music performances. In June, kilts are the proper attire at the Rhode Island Scottish Highland Festival where highland dance competitions, live music, caber tossing and sheep dog demonstrations are the order of the day. ■

WICKFORD, N. KINGSTOWN, NEWPORT, & BLOCK ISLAND, RI Nestled along the waterfront of Wickford Harbor, the tree-lined streets of Wickford Village offer a glimpse of our nation’s early history. Historic homes from the 1700s, churches and gardens peacefully co-exist with distinctive shops and charming restaurants, encouraging you to take in the scenery and enjoy the relaxing pace of this seaside haven. Watch the boats bob in the harbor while sipping a cup of coffee at an outdoor café, feed the ducks or peruse galleries and one-of-a-kind shops at your leisure. Enjoy the natural scenery along the Wilson Park Bikeway, a 1.5-mile loop circling the seventy-five-acre Wilson Park in Colonial Wickford. Walk, bike or skate your way to picnic spots, hidden coves and water views. For the best of painting, sculpting and photography, don’t miss the Annual Wickford Art Festival. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, it’s the country’s oldest open-air
art fair showcasing masterworks of more than 250 artists from around the country and around the world. As you cross the Newport Bridge (Pell Bridge) from Jamestown, you’ll be captivated by expansive views of Narragansett Bay and the sight of summer’s fleet of sailboats cutting white wake pathways across dark blue waves. Known as “The City by the Sea,” Newport’s cobblestone streets are home to more authentic colonial period structures than any other early American city. Along the craggy cliffs of this maritime gem stand the “summer cottages” of the Vanderbilt and Astor families. Tour the ornate and lavish summer mansions of the Gillded Age’s most notorious railroad barons and New York socialites. See the mansions from the ocean side, enjoy magnificent views of the Atlantic and drink in the refreshing salt air along the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk.
Understand more about Newport’s rich military and maritime heritage with a visit to the US Naval War College Museum or take a guided walking tour to learn more about early struggles for religious freedom, Newport’s revolutionary past, pirates and rogues of the early colony or the varied and stunning architectural legacy of the city. Discover the beautiful grounds of the International Tennis museum and the fascinating tales of tennis’ brightest stars. Just a few miles out of Newport, hear the thunder of hooves and get caught up in the excitement of the Newport International Polo series. Taste your way along the many bistros and fine restaurants tucked along Newport’s wharves, shop the exclusive boutiques or take a day-trip to explore the vintages of Newport’s three local Continued on page 82

wineries. See the city from the sea, sky and railways; charter a sunset sail, climb aboard a helicopter tour or travel along the scenic Old Colony railway. Summer is festival season in Newport, and the city is best know for its music festivals featuring world-class talent and attracting audiences from around the world. Plan your visit to coincide with The Newport Music Festival, The Newport Folk Festival or Newport Jazz Festival. Board a ferry from Newport, the port of Galilee in Narragansett or New London, CT and set your sights on Block Island. Getting there is part of the adventure and once you hit land there are 17 miles of beach to explore and miles of winding roadways to bike or motorbike along as you seek out lighthouses, freshwater ponds, historic cemeteries and boundless ocean views. The 30-mile network of meandering trails called “The Greenway” entices hikers to discover breathtaking ocean vistas, spot native wildlife and appreciate local flora. Pack a picnic for your excursion or return to Old Harbor at the hub of town for a hearty meal or gourmet treat. The local calendar is chock full of the best of seaside life including, a chowder cook-off and fishing tournament, also on the menu are several music and art festivals, a streak fry, road races, garden tours and a triathlon. History buffs will find a great deal to tempt them to North Kingstown. Experience four centuries of Rhode Island history at the 1678 plantation home and gardens of Smith’s Castle. In June, savor Smith Castle’s celebrated strawberry shortcake at the Strawberry Festival. Visit the birthplace of Gilbert Stuart, the American portrait artist most famous for his portraits of America’s early presidents and political leaders; his incomplete portrait of George Washington graces the one-dollar bill. The Stuart homestead houses a working snuff mill and water wheel, fish ladder, colonial herb gardens and enchanting nature trails. In June, catch the USAF Thunderbirds at the RI National Guard Air Show. Admission is free to this annual event featuring insider looks at planes and thrilling demonstrations of heart-stopping aviation. Other local aviation displays include the Quonset Air Museum and the Seabee Museum Park. Take advantage of ferry service to Martha’s Vineyard and avoid Cape Cod traffic. The high-speed ferry from Quonset Point in North Kingstown will have you in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard in 95 minutes. Lighthouse lovers will want to get the mariner’s view of ten lighthouses aboard a narrated cruise also leaving several times daily from Quonset Point. ■
