WOODEN BOAT SHOW AT MYSTIC SEAPORT

Harkness Memorial State Park

Long Point

NEW LONDON, GROTON, MYSTIC, STONINGTON, N. STONINGTON, & PAWCATUCK, CT Roll down the windows and let the salt-sea blow through your hair as you travel winding roads lined with historic stonewalls. Discover Southeastern Connecticut’s refreshing summer getaways nestled among panoramic water views. Small cities, towns and boroughs host a treasure-trove of activities. Walk historic waterfronts, kayak through serene estuaries, peruse art galleries or discover the nightlife. Let the rich maritime history of the area lure you out to sea on a fishing expedition, lobster cruise or daylong private charter. Hike or bike through green vistas and shaded groves of the area’s scenic state parks. Taste the legacy of Connecticut’s rich colonial farming history at local farmer’s markets or sample Connecticut vintages along the Connecticut Wine Trail. If you’re craving a sensational nightlife,

see what’s in the cards at Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods casinos where comedy clubs, hot dance scenes and world-class entertainment will keep you going ’til dawn. Named one of the top ten creative communities of its size, “The Whaling City” of New London, founded in 1646, has reinvented its maritime heritage by blending history, art, music, and a bustling restaurant scene along its revitalized Waterfront District. Take your pick from a vivacious selection of live music and delicious menus offered in intimate venues along Bank Street. If theater is your passion, enjoy Broadway shows, opera or memorable musical guests at Garde Arts Center. The complex’s stunning centerpiece, Garde Theatre, once a 1920’s movie palace, is now nationally recognized for it’s gorgeously restored Moroccan

interior. View master works at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, seek out contemporary designs of local artists at Bank Street’s Hygenic Art Galleries, or follow art that’s taken to the street in Hygenic’s Wall-to-Wall Mural project. If you’re out and about in July, don’t miss two great outdoor festivals. Sailfest, New London’s largest festival, features a 5K road race, fine crafts festival, amusement rides and a major fireworks display, and Fish, Tales, Tugs & Sails, a celebration of children’s literature and the environment. The city is also home to the Joshua Hempsted House, the oldest documented frame building in North America. During your visit, take steps along Connecticut’s Freedom Trail and visit the Robert Mills US Custom Continued on page 8

House & Museum, the oldest continuously operating U. S. Custom House in the country, where the slave ship, Amistad, was first taken in 1839, and where the first action began to free the slaves who had taken over that vessel. Journey back in time following the Heritage Trail; 30 brass plaques set in the sidewalk will guide you along historic streets lined with 18th and 19th century buildings. Take a moment to admire the Tiffany stained glass windows of St. James Episcopal Church. Visit sites that welcomed famous and infamous revolutionary figures of American history, tour the Shaw-Perkins Mansion where George Washington slept or view the schoolhouse where Nathan Hale taught. Just outside of downtown New London, stand in the Ye Antientest Burial Ground, founded in 1652, where many early settlers are interred and some of the oldest-known graves of early Black colonists can be found. It is from this scenic hillside that Benedict Arnold is said to have stood to watch British troops conquer Fort Griswold. A short drive along the waterfront brings you to the massive granite fortifications of Fort Trumbull, a 19th Century hexagonal fort built in the Egyptian Revival style. Enjoy the spectacular fishing opportunities at the one-of-a-kind fishing pier, climb the ramparts for boundless views of Long Island Sound and catch glimpses of local lighthouses studding the

harbor’s edge. Just beyond the fort, visit Monte Cristo Cottage, the boyhood summer home of Eugene O’Neill, America’s only Nobel-Prize winning playwright. The charming Victorian cottage, which served as the setting for two of O’Neill’s most notable works, Ah, Wilderness! and Long Day's Journey Into Night, houses a permanent exhibition on the life and works of the dramatist. From New London, make your way to Waterford where no visit would be complete without a day spent in Harkness Memorial State Park. Magnificent views of Long Island Sound stretch across the horizon, cool breezes make kite flying and picnicking favorite activities on the sweeping, seaside lawns. At the heart of the 230 acres park is Eolia, the Harkness family’s elegant summer mansion, surrounded by walled gardens brimming with summer color. Parasail over the Sound or take a charter tour to spot seals, bald eagles and get a mariner’s view of local lighthouses. At the nationally recognized Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, experience the work of some of the nation’s up-and-coming playwrights, actors and directors. If speed is your thing, visit Waterford Speedbowl for fast-paced NASCAR action. Known as the Submarine Capital of the World, Groton saw the launch of the main submarine fleet Continued on page 14

19th century seafaring community. Climb aboard tall ships, watch a blacksmith ply his trade or learn to signal in semaphore. This summer offers a unique opportunity to be a part of history as the Seaport’s flagship vessel Charles W. Morgan is returned to the seas in July after a five-year renovation. Plan your visit to coincide with any of the seaport’s annual festivities such as the Sea Music Festival, Classic and Wooden Boat Show, and Moby Dick marathon. Immerse yourself in all things aquatic at Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration. Get up close to beluga whales, seals and sea lions, penguins, jellyfish and a colorful array of exotic fish in the stunning 30,000-gallon coral reef exhibit. Famed ocean explorer Dr. Robert Ballard’s Institute for Exploration brings undersea exploration to life through a series of innovative, multi-media exhibits. At the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, explore eight miles of peaceful trails and discover local wildlife. To learn more about the area’s natural beauty, take part in any number of environmental awareness programs or guided field excursions. Wander the narrow streets of Stonington Borough in the Town of Stonington to admire prime examples of colonial architecture. As you go, peruse antique shops, boutiques or stop to enjoy opportunities for fine dining. Sample fresh produce and prepared foods and admire the handcrafts of local artisans at the year-round Farmer’s Market open every Saturday. Partake in local maritime legacy by touring the town’s historic stone lighthouse, then head to Fisherman’s Dock to watch Stonington’s commercial fishing fleet come and go as it has for centuries. In July, become part of local tradition at the annual Blessing of the Fleet celebration where solemn memorials for fisherman lost at sea give way to joyful music and entertainment at this truly authentic maritime occasion. Several stops along the Connecticut Wine Trail are located in Stonington, so pack your picnic basket and blanket and spend a day sampling the local vintages, enjoying tours and al fresco concerts. For down-home fun, check out the North Stonington Agricultural Fair in July where tractor and oxen pulls, hay bale tossing, blueribbon livestock and pie-eating contests are sure to provide entertainment for everyone. 8

Located on the banks of the Pawcatuck River, Westerly, RI pairs small town tranquility with firstclass arts and culture. Art galleries, clothing boutiques and gift shops share turn-of-the-century buildings in the historic downtown with casual dining establishments, distinctive coffee shops, comfortable brew pubs and wine bars. In the evening, many of these venues feature live music as well. History buffs will want to meander past the gorgeous 1912 Beaux Arts style Westerly Train Station and, just up the street, the 1902 Armory with its restored granite crenellations. Also of interest will be tours of the 1734 Babcock-Smith House. Linger beneath the shade of heirloom trees in Wilcox Park, the 18-acre Victorian strolling garden at the heart of downtown and be sure to pay a visit to the Runaway Bunny statue, a favorite of local children. Here, in the heart of downtown Westerly, the community gathers to enjoy summer concerts and outdoor theatre. The famed Chorus of Westerly performs a Summer Pops concert, attracting over 25,000 people each June, and The Colonial Theatre invites you to bring a blanket or folding chair to Shakespeare in the Park throughout the month of July. Just steps away from the park, Granite Theatre stages uproarious comedy in the intimate setting of a restored church building.

Discover local talent at The Artist Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, which showcases works by area artists. During monthly Westerly-Pawcatuck Art Strolls, artist studios and local galleries open their doors to welcome the public. Memorial Day weekend, join artisans and art-lovers from across the region at the Virtu Art Festival in Wilcox Park. Bask in the joys of summer at Westerly’s River Glow event in August where street-performers roam the evening streets to the beat of a steel-drum band while over 30 floating bonfires light the waters of the Pawcatuck River. Part of Westerly’s seven mile stretch of endless beaches, Misquamicut Beach is the largest state beach in the Ocean State. Sun lovers can body surf in sparkling salt water, toss Frisbees into the waves or simply bask on the white sand shore. With a modern pavilion offering concessions, a playground, and ample public facilities, it’s easy to spend a whole day at the beach! Amusement rides, water slides, mini-golf and go-carts along with surf shops, t-shirt stores and walk-up food huts make it an easy family favorite. Atlantic Avenue comes alive at night with concerts and activities designed to please the whole family. Blues on the Beach, Hermit Crab Races, Classic Car Cruises, Monday Night Jamz, and Continued on page 33

BEACHES Continued from page 29

Movies on the Beach are just a few summer crowd pleasers. Be there on the Fourth of July for some of the best fireworks in the area. Admire the grandeur of stately summer homes and expansive ocean views in the quaint village of Watch Hill. For over a century, summer visitors have sought out the exclusive shops, restaurants, and antique stores along the harbor side streets of this peaceful hide-away. Spend the day at one of Watch Hill’s three immaculate public beaches then gather at the village green gazebo to watch the sun set over the harbor and listen to the free outdoor Summer Concert series. Children and the young at heart will be delighted by the Flying Horse Carousel, one of the oldest carousels in America. Children taking a spin on the hand-carved horses have a chance to grab a brass ring and secure another ride, gratis! Presiding over Watch Hill, the five-star Ocean House hints at a by-gone era of summer splendor and offers worldclass dining and amenities. Pamper yourself with a day at OH! Spa or make a reservation for an authentic New England clambake. For family fun, children and grown-ups alike will enjoy kite building at Weekapaug Inn’s first annual Fly-Inn. Registration is required. 8

SoHo Ristorante By Anna Maria Trusky/Special to The Sun

At SoHo Ristorante, food and art are so intricately intertwined that it’s impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins—and that’s exactly the way co-managers Tony DelFarno and Lisa LaVigne DelFarno like it! Big fans of both fine dining and funky decor, Tony and Lisa opened the Narragansett bistro in December 2011 with the dream of treating their seaside town to a dining experience straight out of the eponymous arts district in Lower Manhattan. Indeed, SoHo Ristorante can best be described as a gourmet gallery where innovative creations from the painter’s palate inspire equally innovative creations for the diner’s palate. The walls are covered with eye-popping original works by such prominent artists as Romero Britto, Charles Fazzino, Andy Warhol, and Salvador Dali. But there are other artists here, too, who work in pasta instead of paint. "We wanted to create a relaxed and upbeat atmosphere that had a lot of visual appeal," says Tony, a Rhode Island native. Lisa, who co-owns the restaurant with Tony’s daughter Alyssa, was the powerhouse behind the restaurant’s décor, designing the space and placement of the art pieces as well as the flooring, which is made of different-sized rectangles of primary-colored carpeting. "The dishes reflect the artwork," Tony points out. "We feature many unique and original recipes. Our presentations are very artistic. At the same time, we offer foods that are basic and traditional. Many of the recipes I use came from my grandmother, who was born in Italy." The DelFarnos have pulled together a team of culinary artisans whose talents can be matched only by their enthusiasm. Chef Dan Gallogly III, is Cordon Bleu-trained. "I am like a personal chef every night," Gallogly says. "I am constantly making up new dishes according to what diners request. Our motto is, if we have the ingredients in house we will cook it for you! Every ingredient is fresh; this is the freshest restaurant in the area, hands down." Indeed, SoHo’s seafood is so fresh you are tempted to eat it quickly, before it swims away! The ingredients for their signature frutti di mare, cod Toscana, and fried calamari all come from nearby Point Judith and are purchased daily. Their steaks and beef for their famous (and ginormous) sirloin meatball are prime Angus. Even the pastas are fresh, made in Boston three times a week specifically to SoHo’s order. All the sauces, soups, and dressings are prepared fresh, using herbs such as basil, thyme, and cilantro that taste as though they were picked only nanoseconds before being served. Head Chef Geoffrey

Travers is a positive Picasso when it comes to whipping up a crisp fresh-fruit salsa, a creamy guacamole, or a tangy pomegranate-orange salad dressing. The desserts are all homemade, and feature tiramisu, death by chocolate cake, and spumoni with claret sauce. Travers also makes amazing homemade biscotti; popular flavors are apricot, pistachio, and white chocolate; orange chocolate; and pomegranate with toasted almonds and butterscotch. Special orders don’t upset the DelFarnos and their team, who will enthusiastically and artistically concoct vegetarian and vegan variations for guests who eschew (rather than chew) animal-based ingredients. SoHo’s bar is well stocked with premium beers, wines, and liqueurs. It comes as no surprise that even the cocktails reflect the Pop Art theme—such as the wildly innovative 10-ounce martinis named after artists. Just for starters, there’s the acai-andorange Fazzino; the Romero Britto, a "Grand Marnier fresh smash;" and the sparkling hibiscus Salvador Dali! SoHo accommodates about 90 diners total; 55 indoors and another 35 or so outside in the summers. "This is the perfect size for what we want to do. This isn’t about a numbers game for me," Tony says. "I am not interested in how many times I can turn over the tables. I am more interested in attention to detail and making each dinner perfectly." Ever the innovator, Lisa is in the process of coming up with new and exciting offerings for her customers. "I am looking into offering more interactive options, such as lava rocks, fondue, and Thai wraps," she says. Lisa has also started up "Chromatic Cupcakes," which teaches local kids about Pop Art in conjunction with cupcake-making. The DelFarnos are dedicated to helping their community in every way possible. They support fund-raisers for the Narragansett police and fire departments, the local schools, and URI as well as the annual Bash on the Beach. SoHo Ristorante is located at 21 Pier Marketplace in Narragansett. It is open every day at 4:00 PM. For more information or reservations call (401) 789SOHO or go to www.SohoRI.com. You can also find SoHo on Facebook.

MOHEGAN BLUFFS, BLOCK ISLAND

WICKFORD, N. KINGSTOWN, NEWPORT, & BLOCK ISLAND, RI Nestled along the waterfront of Wickford Harbor, the tree-lined streets of Wickford Village offer a glimpse of our nation’s early history. Historic homes from the 1700s, churches and gardens peacefully co-exist with distinctive shops and charming restaurants, encouraging you to take in the scenery and enjoy the relaxing pace of this seaside haven. Watch the boats bob in the harbor while sipping a cup of coffee at an outdoor café, feed the ducks or peruse galleries and one-of-a-kind shops at your leisure. Enjoy the natural scenery along the Wilson Park Bikeway, a 1.5-mile loop circling the seventy-five-acre Wilson Park in Colonial Wickford. Walk, bike or skate your way to picnic spots, hidden coves and water views. For the best of painting, sculpting and photography, don’t miss the Annual Wickford Art Festival.

Celebrating its 51st anniversary, it’s the country’s oldest open-air art fair showcasing masterworks of more than 250 artists from around the country and around the world. As you cross the Newport Bridge (Pell Bridge) from Jamestown, you’ll be captivated by expansive views of Narragansett Bay and the sight of summer’s fleet of sailboats cutting white wake pathways across dark blue waves. Known as “The City by the Sea,” Newport’s cobblestone streets are home to more authentic colonial period structures than any other early American city. Along the craggy cliffs of this maritime gem stand the “summer cottages” of the Vanderbilt and Astor families. Tour the ornate and lavish summer mansions of the Gilded Age’s most notorious railroad barons and New York socialites. See the mansions from

the ocean side from Newport’s famous Cliff Walk. A portion of the famed walkway is closed for repair but a section from Memorial Boulevard to The Breakers at Ruggles Avenue remains open to visitors. Understand more about Newport’s rich military and maritime heritage with a visit to the US Naval War College Museum or take a guided walking tour of the city to learn more about early struggles for religious freedom, Newport’s revolutionary past, pirates and rogues of the early colony, or the varied and stunning architectural legacy of the city. Discover the beautiful grounds of the International Tennis museum and the fascinating tales of tennis’ brightest stars. Just a few miles out of Newport, hear the Continued on page 82

thunder of hooves and get caught up in the excitement of the Newport International Polo series. Taste your way along the many bistros and fine restaurants tucked along Newport’s wharves, shop the exclusive boutiques or take a day-trip to explore the vintages of Newport’s three local wineries. See the city from the sea, sky and railways; charter a sunset sail, climb aboard a helicopter tour, or travel along the scenic Old Colony railway. Summer is festival season in Newport, and the city is best know for its music festivals featuring world-class talent and attracting audiences from around the world. Plan your visit to coincide with The Newport Music Festival, The Newport Folk Festival or Newport Jazz Festival. Board a ferry from Newport, the port of Galilee in Narragansett or New London, CT and set your sights on Block Island. Getting there is part of the adventure and once you hit land there are 17 miles of beach to explore and miles of winding roadways to bike or motorbike along as you seek out lighthouses, freshwater ponds, historic cemeteries and boundless ocean views. The 30-mile network of meandering trails called “The Greenway” entices hikers to discover breathtaking ocean vistas, spot native wildlife and appreciate local flora. Pack a picnic for your excursion or return to Old Harbor at the hub of town for a hearty meal or gourmet treat. The local calendar is chock full of the best of seaside life including, a chowder cook-off and fishing tournament, also on the menu are several music and art festivals, a streak fry, road races, garden tours and a triathlon. History buffs will find a great deal to tempt them to North Kingstown. Experience four centuries of Rhode Island history at the 1678 plantation home and gardens of Smith’s Castle. In June, savor Smith Castle’s celebrated strawberry shortcake at the Strawberry Festival. Visit the birthplace of Gilbert Stuart, the American portrait artist most famous for his portraits of America’s early presidents and political leaders; his incomplete portrait of George Washington graces the one-dollar bill. The Stuart homestead houses a working snuff mill and water wheel, fish ladder, colonial herb gardens and enchanting nature trails. If aviation makes your heart soar, be sure to learn about Rhode Island’s history in the sky at Quonset Air Museum and the Seabee Museum Park. Lighthouse lovers will want to get the mariner’s view of ten lighthouses aboard a narrated cruise leaving several times daily from Quonset Point. 8
