Welcome to the Chorus of Westerly’s 33rd Summer Pops
Andrew Howell’s First Pops as Conductor O n a summer night in 1981, Dixon Square in downtown Westerly overflowed with energy, music, and community. The Chorus of Westerly was about to embark on a journey to Great Britain for an international performance tour. This tour would take the Chorus to venues where they would sing in the halls of kings and queens. However, in order for this tour to be possible, the Chorus needed the support of its community. Thankfully, the community came through.
Such amazing support deserved a special thank you. The Chorus, grateful for all the community had done for the organization itself, decided the best way to offer this thanks was through music. With this in mind, the Chorus performed a special, free, “Summer Pops” concert on the steps of the post office in Dixon Square. There was never any plan to produce the concert again. But immediately after the concert there were questions about when the next “Summer Pops” would take place. It was clear that a very special new community tradition was born. Three decades later an exciting new chapter begins. The Chorus of Westerly and Pops Festival Orchestra, the Artillery Company of Newport, baritone William Sharp, Fireworks by Grucci, and the entire community gather together in Westerly’s Wilcox Park to celebrate the 33rd edition of Summer Pops. This year’s performance will indeed be an historical one as it marks the Pops conducting debut of Andrew Howell, new music director of The Chorus of Westerly. Howell takes over on the Pops podium for George Kent, music director emeritus of The Chorus of Westerly, who
retired last June after directing 32 Pops concerts. This concert will conclude Howell’s triumphant first season as music director of The Chorus of Westerly. Looking back, it is amazing to think about how much this “one time” concert has grown. Over 670,000 people have experienced the great music, magic, and celebration of community through Summer Pops. Generations of area children have grown-up knowing that this concert marks the start of their summer. These kids know no world without Summer Pops.
POPS 2013 Summer Pops 2013, scheduled for Saturday, June 22 at 8 pm in Wilcox Park, features a fantastic lineup of music and performers. Maestro Howell leads the Chorus and Pops Festival Orchestra in a program of American and Broadway favorites. Featured on this year’s program are several patriotic favorites including Stars and Stripes Forever, the Armed Forces Salute, and The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Music from The King and I will also be featured on the program. The featured Pops performer this year is GRAMMY-award winning baritone, William Sharp. A favorite with the Chorus of Westerly on its classical season, Mr. Sharp will sing with the Chorus a series of British Naval Songs entitled Songs of The Fleet by Charles Villiers Stanford. The Summer Pops pre-show features performances by many talented artists. Summer Pops concludes with Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” featuring cannons from the Artillery Company of Newport, ringing church bells, and the extraordinary fireworks by Grucci.

Currently, the Chorus of Westerly ranks include 180 singers (with around 70 children/ teens ages 8-18) who sing an ambitious yearround season that includes a classical concert series, holiday Pops concerts, “A Celebration of Twelfth Night,” a musical/theatrical extravaganza that features the talents of nearly 300 community performers and volunteers, two guest artists series at Kent Hall, and other productions. Summer Pops is offered every June in

In addition to its performance program, the Chorus also now offers a series of children’s educational programs and other adult outreach programs. These include an overnight summer music camp, a week-long choral workshop for adult singers with famous choral directors in New Hampshire, a week-long music and movement day camp at Kent Hall in Westerly (beginning this July for children ages 5 to 8), training choirs, music education classes for adult and teen singers, and a newly formed teen ensemble. The Chorus of Westerly also has been helping spread the “arts banner” in the community by being one of the founding members of WRAP – The Westerly Regional Arts Partnership.

Since its founding over five decades ago, the Chorus of Westerly has sung in more than 570 performances for nearly 1 million people at home and abroad as part of three major international concert tours. Over 2,500 area residents have been members of the Chorus with over 1,500 singing as children or teenagers. When George Kent founded the Chorus in 1959, one of the primary missions of the ensemble was to become an organization where children and adults could sing major works of the choral repertoire in a setting of the highest artistic merit. Today, the Chorus has become nationally recognized as unique in its practice of having children sing a full concert season of challenging repertoire with adult singers. Indeed, the Chorus of Westerly is now one of only two intergenerational choruses in the country where children and adults sing together on every concert of a season regardless of work.

his Chorus of Westerly Summer Pops concert marks the final major event for Andrew Howell in his first year as music director for the chorus. Asked for a few words to describe the year, Howell answers, “thrilling,” “inspiring,” and “whirlwind.” While the year may have flown by, Howell managed to pack a lot of punch into his debut season.

The Chorus’ 180 singers and 60 orchestral musicians have created a fun-filled program of traditional and recent popular music suitable for the entire family, including patriotic favorites, songs from stage and screen, and a stirring performance of maritime music by a special guest soloist. The event will close with Tchaikovsky’s famous 1812 Overture — complete with fireworks by Grucci, cannons of the Newport Artillery, and the bells of Christ Church.

Chorus of Westerly Executive Director Ryan Saunders is thrilled to be introducing the world to the Chorus’ new director, Andrew Howell, who will be at the Pops podium for the first time. “He is a talented and brilliant musician with a wonderfully engaging personality,” Saunders says. “He’s been conducting all season, so 6,000 or so people have already seen his work, but now he is getting up in front of 25,000 more people — really the entire town. The fact that he is a native son will make the evening even more special.” Another standout of Summer Pops 2013 will be distinguished guest performer and recording artist baritone William Sharp, who has sung with the Chorus in its classical concerts for many years and has presented hundreds of solo recitals in the United States and abroad. “He is one of our favorites,” Saunders says. “It will be

a real treat to have him at Summer Pops. He will be the lead in a larger work called Songs of the Fleet by C.V. Stanford. It is a collection of songs for soloist, chorus, and orchestra written in tribute of life in the British Navy.” There are scores of people and organizations Ryan would like to thank for their help with the event. “The list is exceptionally long,” he says. “There will be a donor page in our program with lot of names of people who make this all possible. We have hundreds of volunteers and donors without whom we could not do this. The Unsung Heroes of Summer Pops Special to The Sun or more than 30 years, The Chorus of Westerly has been putting on Summer Pops, a massive, day-long musical festival held in Wilcox Park featuring numerous performers from around the region and capped off by a sensational concert from our proud town’s 180-voice Chorus. Every year we cheer for the singers, dancers and instrumentalists who pour their hearts out to entertain us at an event that has been the real kick-off to summer since 1981.

But what about the folks who we don’t cheer for? What about the hard working volunteers who, in some cases since the very first years, have been instrumental in making Summer Pops the fantastic event that it is? The Chorus of Westerly’s Summer Pops is one of the many things Westerly should be really proud of and grateful that we can call our own. So let’s take a moment to find out about some of the unsung heroes of this enormous undertaking. Here are just thirteen of the countless army of Summer Pops volunteers! 1. Bob Elmer, a Senior Care Advisor, Memory Care Specialist and Master Trainer of Alzheimer’s Care, has been serving as the Emcee of Summer Pops for 26 of its 32 years. With a strong background in public speaking, he was approached by good friend Doug Rayner years ago about being the Emcee, and being

or thirty years, generations of southern New Englanders have come to downtown Westerly on or about the first weekend of summer to gather together for an evening of music, fireworks, and friendship. Indeed, in the three decades of Summer Pops more than 670,000 people have attended and heard the Chorus of Westerly sing, been awed by the firing cannons, and watched fireworks blast into the air during the 1812 Overture. It is a magical night that is more than just a concert. It’s a town wide party and celebration of everything that is good about our small community.

It is perhaps the beauty of the setting, Wilcox Park, that sets the tone for this grand summer event. The park is owned and cared for by the Westerly Public Library. Each year, this pristine setting is turned into a huge outdoor concert hall complete with an enormous stage, professional lighting and sound, special security forces, and extra sanitary
the “boy that can’t say no,” he accepted willingly. “This event is magical and I’ve often said that if they ever told me I was “out” as Emcee, I’d be happy to come back to take out the trash just to be a part of it. It’s fantastic and very moving.” 2. Kim Rayner-Russell, daughter of Doug Rayner, manages, along with help from her sister Kristen, the POPS merchandise sales in the park. Born into her love for Summer Pops, Kim shared one of an innumerable trove of stories from a lifetime being at the concert. “One year an elderly individual had heard the music, so he decided to break out of his assisted living home and see what it was all about. By the time he reached the merchandise tent and told of his story, he was exhausted. After a fair amount of discussion, we decided the best thing was to get him a chair, let him enjoy the music and get him back, hopefully undetected, when it was over. Which we did! After all, there were tee shirts to be sold!!”
Chorus President, leads the team of volunteers who decorate the stage. The morning of Pops, with big bolts of fabric, bags of bows, ties, and ribbons, and plenty of staple guns, screwdrivers, pliers, staples, scissors, she and her team of experienced workers make the stage as beautiful as it is every year. Once the concert is over, they reverse the process and have everything wrapped up in about an hour. “I love the Chorus, Summer Pops, and have great admiration for Doug Rayner. I’m happy to do what I can to support him and the event. This is such a great expericontinued on page 16

Sandy Niles, graphic artist and photographer by day, Chorus member and Summer Pops volunteer by night, has had a hand in nearly every aspect of the design and signage of the event since the beginning. If you can read it you can thank Sandy. The design of the yearly Summer Pops t-shirts is also a task happily handled by Sandy Niles. When asked why she comes back year after year, she smiles, “Love and habit.” 4. Emily Finnegan, singer, board member and former
facilities. Within twelve hours of the events conclusion, Wilcox Park is quickly returned to a downtown park by a hardworking group of professionals and volunteers. However, this could not be accomplished without a few rules and the miraculous cooperation of you, one of our 25,000 audience members. Bring a picnic to share at the event. It can be plain or fancy, or, if you want to purchase food onsite, visit the bandstand and purchase from The Rotary Club of Westerly or Bess Eaton. Remember, regardless of how you dine, alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the park. Fires, be they wood, charcoal, hibachi, or propane, are also not allowed. Listen to the music. Be courteous to those around you and keep talking to a minimum. Over 300 musicians will sing, play, and perform for you tonight. You do not want to miss a moment of it and you want to make sure your neighbors in the park can hear just as well as you can! There are ample portable restroom facilities located in the parking lot nearest the library and post office. Please feel free to use them during the concert. Please note that the portable restrooms behind the stage are reserved for the performers. For safety and security reasons, we ask that you please do not go or attempt to go back stage. Stage

and backstage security will be enforced this year and only authorized, properly ID’d personnel and performers will be given access to the area. There are several hundred public safety and security personnel working this event thanks to support from our area towns. Please note the following safety precautions. Unattended personal property of ANY kind (including unattended coolers, backpacks, bags, chairs, anything besides a blanket) WILL be removed without warning by the police. These may be recovered from an area in the parking lot near the portable restroom facilities, but are not our responsibility to protect. Look for Summer Pops trash containers located throughout the park. Please pick up after yourself and even after those around you when necessary. Please take home everything you bring with you back home again when you leave. This includes any rocks or other items you may bring to hold down the corners of your blanket. Do not use spikes or similar items to anchor your blanket; irrigation pipes may be damaged. Any damage caused by such activity will be your responsibility. There is a new and extensive sprinkler system throughout the park. ALL volunteers are welcome to join the clean-up crew Saturday night and Sunday morning after 8 a.m. to help with the many
facets of park beautification. Many hands make light work. Thank you! Bring this program with you to the park! Some will be distributed there, but the number is limited and we want to be as “green” as possible for Summer Pops 2013. Although a plastic tarp may do a good job keeping your blanket dry, it also does a good job killing the grass. Plastic tarps or plasticized materials are prohibited, and will be removed. The Chorus will solicit donations in support of Summer Pops during the pre-show and perhaps at a point during the show. Chorus volunteers carrying fancy gold balloons and gold buckets will wander through the audience collecting contributions. If you have not already contributed to Summer Pops, we hope you will consider making at contribution at this time. Please note that this will be the only time during the event that the Chorus of Westerly will be soliciting contributions. Any other requests for donations are not being collected on behalf of the Pops. What if it rains? If it rains a little, then stops, the concert will continue as scheduled. If it continues to rain Saturday, the show will happen on Sunday. If it rains on Sunday the show will be postponed until Monday. If it rains on Monday, we give up! program to include three tiers of singers: Training Chorister, Junior Chorister, and Full Chorister. “My goal is for each child to be able to open a piece of music and make sense of it – that each child be a self-sufficient and confident musician in their own right,” explains Howell who says that the tiered system will give young singer the opportunity to succeed and excel in the organization by allowing them to grow into the responsibility and intensity of full participation in the Chorus’ season. Howell is confident that his youngest singers will blossom under the new organization. “I am constantly amazed at how quickly they learn and how effortlessly they are able to accomplish the goals set for them. I am reminded of my beginnings in the Chorus of Westerly at the age of 12 and how exciting it is when all of your hard work learning a piece of music finally comes to life with orchestra and soloists in the concert,” says Howell.
“Touring is a wonderful way to strengthen community within a chorus,” shares Howell. “And the memories created and friendships strengthened will stay with the singers for many years after. Besides that, it will have been 19 years since the last Chorus of Westerly tour and we are long overdue to take our music on the road!”

An exciting aspect of the community-building of the tour is that it is open to both singers and non-singers in the wider community. Howell says the chorus is still looking for both singers and non-singers to travel with The Chorus. “"As far as I am concerned, music, traveling, community, and great food are four of the best things in life. This trip will combine all of those, so who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?” asks Howell.

Sally Gordon has acted as the ‘balloon coordinator’ for Summer Pops for nearly 15 years. She organizes a group of people, mostly students, to inflate and then sell the balloons in the park. “The balloons make the park such a festive setting and the money we make helps support the Pops. I keep coming back because I really enjoy helping out and the balloons are such fun.” 6. Karen Raven, deputy director of philanthropy for The Nature Conservancy in New York and former Chorus manager, has cued the fireworks and church bells during the 1812 Overture since 1989. “They were looking for someone who could do the job, so I raised my hand, since I know how to call cues and read an orchestra score, and I have done it ever since!” 7. Mary Dreghorn, former singer, board member and Chorus president, has been writing the thank you letters to Summer Pops donors since she stopped singing around ten years ago. Expressing gratitude to those who help make the Pops possible is a major part of what makes it so special, so when the need for a donor correspondent arose, Mary said she’d be glad to do it. “The Chorus is very important. We were looking for music when we moved to Connecticut and so we joined The Chorus. It’s just great, sitting with friends, watching the cannons and meeting interesting people at The Pops. What The Chorus of Westerly does for the town is really important.” 8. Bill Brown, retired former 1st Selectman for Stonington, spends the Friday before the show at the park laying out and setting up the various seating sections and pedestrian aisles. He also helped design and construct the new rope railing system that became necessary when Wilcox Park updated its irrigation system and planting wooden stakes in the ground became impossible. “This is a wonderful event. I love doing it and Westerly wouldn’t be the same without it.” 9. Vin Gaccione has been cooking for the chorus, orchestra and backstage crew of Summer Pops since it first moved to Wilcox Park. No stranger to cooking for large events, he enjoys the interesting spectrum of people enjoying his delicious labors. “We feed everyone. The crew, the musicians, even the guys who fire the cannons. I think it’s a good project. I think The Chorus of Westerly does a lot for the town and I like to help out.” 10. Andrew Nathan, owner of The Cooked Goose and the recently opened Sea Goose
Grill and Raw Bar, has been donating his culinary services to The Chorus of Westerly’s Summer Pops since 2008. Besides hosting the donor dinner on the Thursday evening before Summer Pop’s weekend, Mr. Nathan makes sure everyone who isn’t an audience member gets fed. That’s about 350-400 mouths to feed. He does all this because he respects what The Chorus does for this community and because of Doug Rayner. “Dr. Rayner is one of my heroes. If you have to aspire to be like someone, Doug is that guy. Plus it’s a chance to work with Vin Gaccione. It’s the most remarkable event I have ever been a part of, all those people to feed and every one smiles and says “thank you.” It’s amazing to have something like this in a small town like Westerly.” 11. Cal Lord, Pastor at Central Baptist Church and President of The Westerly Rotary Club, explained how the Rotary has volunteered to fully manage Summer Pop’s concession stands since the event moved to Wilcox Park. Food, soda, Del’s lemonade and “pops-corn” are all sold by the hard working volunteer from the Rotary Club, with 100% of the proceeds going to The Chorus of Westerly. “Our motto is ‘Service above self.’ It’s so nice to be a part of something that is positive and uplifting in the community.” 12. Chris Beck, owner of E-Z Waste Systems, Inc, has handled all of the rubbish, recycling, portable bathroom facility needs and post-performance clean up of Summer Pops for six years. He was approached by Doug Rayner to be hired by The Chorus of Westerly for the job, but instead decided to volunteer his company’s services. “The Chorus of Westerly is a great organization. It’s the right thing to do to help after so many years of putting on that show and everything else they do for the community. We have a great crew and enjoy working with the camaraderie with the other vendors and volunteers. We don’t think of it as work.” 13. Alan Peck, Park Manager for Wilcox Park, helps facilitate the set up and tear down procedures for Summer Pops, along with countless other organizational details. From storing equipment and supplying golf carts to working on logistical details between Wilcox Park and The Chorus of Westerly, Summer Pops keeps Mr. Peck pretty busy, but all he can talk about is how much he loves it. “Every year I totally enjoy Summer Pops. Pre-show through the fireworks. It’s a great night, a great sense of community. Working with Summer Pops is a chance to work with a great group of people.” So as the fireworks explode and the music lifts you to you feet with applause this year, remember to direct some of that joy, appreciation and gratitude to the hardworking folk who make this fantastic event a reality. Andrew Howell was appointed the second music director in the history of The Chorus of Westerly in the spring of 2012 and began his tenure July 1, 2012. Howell succeeded his former teacher and his mentor, George Kent, with whom he studied at URI and sang under as a child and later adult singer in the Chorus. A graduate of Westerly High School, Howell received his bachelor and masters degrees from URI where he studied with Mark Conley, George Kent, Richard Coffey, and Ann Danis. Immediately after graduating from the University of Rhode Island, Andrew joined the conducting faculty of the URI Music Department. In addition to his work with the Chorus, Howell is organist and choirmaster at St. James Episcopal Church in New London and as music director of the Watch Hill Chapel.

Bob Elmer has served as emcee of Pops for 26 of its 33 years. A Stonington resident, Elmer was in broadcast management for 25 years and now serves as a senior care advisor and memory care specialist with a focus on Alzheimer’s
care. Elmer is the immediate past president of The Rotary Club of Westerly, a past president of The Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce, and is also the “voice” of the Mystic Seaport’s “Antique Boat Parade and Rendezvous.”
THE GRAND FINALE Every year, Summer Pops ends with a bang thanks to the Grucci family of Suffolk, New York. The Grucci family, known around the world as the “First Family of Fireworks,” has provided fireworks for the inaugurations of six American presidents, national celebrations of the bicentennial and the U.S. Constitution, and the wedding of Sheik Hazza of Abu Dhabi. The Grucci Firework show was added to Summer Pops in 1983 when the performance moved from Dixon Square to Wilcox Park. The Grucci Fireworks are first launched during the climatic end of the “1812 Overture” at a specially cued spot in the music. The fireworks then continue in “The Star Spangled Banner” and then for about 6-8 minutes after the concert ends. Joining Grucci as part of the grand finale are the cannons of the Artillery Company of Newport and the clanging church bells of Christ Church, Westerly, rung by Ryan Saunders. ■

Westerly Police Announce Street Closings and NEW Safety Precautions for Summer Pops 2013 The 2013 Summer Pops is scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 22nd, 2013. As such, the following restrictions will be enforced. Grove Avenue will be closed to all vehicular traffic as of 5:00pm. Exceptions will be made for those needing handicapped parking until all spaces are filled. Other motorists will be detoured onto Newton Avenue or other adjacent streets. Wilcox Avenue will be closed off to all vehicular traffic at 5:00pm. Handicapped parking will be available on Grove Avenue, Broad Street, across from the Westerly Town Hall and extending to the Westerly Public Library, as well as parking areas in front of the United States Post Office. PARKING RESTRICTIONS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.
★ ★ NEW THIS YEAR ★ ★ Blankets are the only items to be left in the park prior to the event. This will only be allowed after 5:00pm on Friday, June 21st, 2013. Unattended, chairs, coolers and/or any other items WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO BE LEFT within the park prior to the event. THESE ITEMS WILL BE REMOVED. If items such as these are to be brought to the event, they must be brought with those attending at the time of the event. Also, any coolers and/or any other items left unattended during the event WILL BE REMOVED. Please note no bicycles, scooters, skateboards, or similar riding devices are permitted in the park. Dogs are also prohibited in the park for the event.

Do you like to sing? JOIN THE CHORUS OF WESTERLY! The Chorus of Westerly wants you! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to watch the fireworks from the stage of Summer Pops, to sing the great works of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart with a huge orchestra in a real performance hall, or be a part of A Celebration of Twelfth Night? Do you just like to sing and want to try something fun? If you answered yes to any of these questions, join us in the Chorus of Westerly! Right now, the Chorus of Westerly is looking for new members — children and adults. Children can join the Chorus beginning at the age of 8. Adults can join at any age! Appointments will be available through June and July. Anyone wishing to audition for this fall should call the office to set up a special appointment before the month ends (401.596.8663).
Joining the Chorus of Westerly requires a commitment to a weekly rehearsal schedule and a more intense concert week rehearsal and performance schedule. Rehearsals for each season begin in September and continue through Summer Pops in June. Adults rehearse for two hours on Monday evenings. Children rehearse Monday and Friday each week after school for an hour.
