the Charlestown Rathskeller Tavern
489A Old Coach Rd, Charlestown, RI 02813 (401) 792-1000 • www.thecharlestownrathskeller.com
Blending the Best of Present and Past By Anna Maria Trusky • Special to The Sun
The Charlestown Rathskeller Tavern bears only a large, stylized letter “R” by way of identification. Of course, that stands for “Rathskeller”—but it could also stand for relaxed (as in the atmosphere), reasonable (as in the prices) and delightfully retro (as in the décor). Oh, and return, which you will no doubt do once you’ve dined, imbibed, and been merry there! The reason for the lone “R” is actually to reflect the Rathskeller property’s past as the site of a 1920s-era speakeasy. Back in those desert-dry days, the shadily intrepid entrepreneurs who wished to purvey spirits had to be sneaky about it, which necessitated subtlety in advertising. New owners Mark and Tom Ready and Nate Holloway were wise, when refurbishing the building last year, to preserve many of its special bygone-era features, including a large stone fireplace in the tavern and the murals, which were painstakingly restored. The murals in the bar feature 1920s boxing champs Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney, while those in the dining-room are fun and quirky depictions of such Prohibition imagery as a jazz band, languid ladies with pencil-thin brows—and, above the “kissing booth,” a comically inebriated chap encountering an equally pickled pink elephant. Story goes that the murals were painted by a regular back in the 40s to pay off a bar tab. “Back in the 20s, the speakeasy was in a spring house on the property. Then in 1933 the original own-

ers build the small bar and restaurant so they could serve alcohol legally,” explains the tavern’s manager Ryan Pincince. “The old Rathskeller operated here from 1933 until 2002 and then went out of business. Mark and Tom Ready and Nate Holloway purchased it in 2011 and recreated it from concept to execution.” It was a natural decision for the trio; Tom and Mark own Ready Excavating and Nate owns ABRI Construction, all located in Charlestown. Mark and Nate actually grew up within quarter mile of the original Rathskeller. Nate’s wife is related to the original owners of the property, the Lezner family. The new owners rebuilt the place mostly from scratch, maintaining the original windows as well as the fireplace and murals while carefully replicating the design and décor of the original establishment, right down to the booths. The new Rathskeller opened in September 2013, and has been a resounding success. The popular tavern claims to have the coldest beer in Rhode Island; The 18 beers on tap, which feature everyone’s favorite domestics as well as craft beers from New England, are kept to a frosty 28 degrees Fahrenheit and served in chilled mugs. There are also copious cocktails to be enjoyed, including the classic Moscow Mule—vodka, ginger beer, and muddled lime presented in—what else?—a shiny copper mug. “Our full-service bar features handcrafted bourbons, higher-end scotches, and local spirits such as Sons of Liberty Royal 9 vodka, which is made in Peacedale,”

the Charlestown Rathskeller Tavern
Ryan points out. “We also have a full-service outdoor bar and patio area as well as a ‘fireside shed’ bar, which was built where saunas used to be.” The menu, characterized as Traditional American, features plenty of seafood, pasta, and steaks. When the owners were designing the menu with Head Chef Wayne “Butch” Bush, they agreed to base many of the menu items on old menus from the Rathskeller’s earliest decades. For example, one of the most popular items is the tavern’s hand-pressed fries. They are prepared to order just as they were back in the day, and served with such mouth-watering toppings as shortrib gravy; truffled pecorino; and bacon, cheddar, sour cream and chives. Butch and his team prepare everything from scratch. The lunch menu, served until 5:00 p.m. daily, features burgers and a wide array of sandwiches including the classic Reuben; a crab cake with tabasco aioli and sprouts; a hot roast beef with horseradish sauce and cheddar; a tofu burger with cheddar, avocado, and aioli; and a Monte Cristo—ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese between two slices of French toast. Soups and stews on the menu include oyster stew, classic French onion, and clam chowder with or without cream. Of course, there are also those famous Rathskeller fries, which are meal all by themselves!
The Rathskeller’s standard dinner menu includes center-cut filet mignon with classic Béarnaise sauce, USDA Choice bone-in ribeye with melted butter or roasted tomato vinaigrette, old-fashioned NY club sirloin sliced over toast points with garlic butter, flat iron steak with blue cheese fondue or Chimichurri sauce, and prime rib (Saturday only). There are also pork chops with braised red cabbage, fingerling potatoes, and mustard demi-glace; chicken saltimbocca with prosciutto, fontina cheese, sage, and tomato demi-glace over red bliss mashed potatoes; surf and turf; and pasta dishes. The Rathskeller also offers an extensive roster of local seafood including broiled Point Judith flounder, seared scallops, and fish and chips. There are also salads for diners seeking lighter fare; a popular standout is the roasted beet salad with goat cheese, dates, and hazelnuts. “We have something to appeal to everyone,” Butch See Rathskeller / Page 32

Choosing the right restaurant for your dinner party Getting together with family and friends for a good meal is a great opportunity to reconnect and share a few laughs. A dinner party at a local restaurant is a lot less stressful for the hosts. There are a number of things to emphasize when looking for the right restaurant to host your dinner party. PROXIMITY Whether entertaining family and friends or a business dinner, the restaurant where you will be gathering should be easily accessible to all people who plan to attend. Try to accommodate those guests who don’t drive by choosing a restaurant that’s accessible via public transportation. PRICE Perhaps the only downside to hosting a dinner party at a restaurant is that such gatherings tend to be more expensive than parties at private residences. Hosts should first determine who will be paying the bill. If everyone has agreed to pay their own portion of the bill, this gives you a little more flexibility when choosing a restaurant. If the host intends to pick up the tab for everyone, then you might want to find a nice restaurant with reasonably priced entrees. If each guest intends to pay for his or her own meal, discuss with guests how much they would like to spend before making a reservation.
MENU The menu is important for hosts to consider when choosing a restaurant. People adhere to certain diets or lifestyles that restrict what they can and cannot eat, and you will want to find a restaurant that can cater to as many of your guests’ needs as possible. Discuss any dietary restrictions with your guests before you begin the process of finding a restaurant. If the responses are slow to come in, you can still go ahead with your search, but look for restaurants that offer vegetarian and gluten-free fare. ACCESSIBILITY When looking for a restaurant, try to find one that’s easily accessible for any older guests who might not get around as easily as they used to or any guests who might have a disability that requires handicap accessible seating and restrooms. Many restaurants can fill both of these needs, but it’s still up to hosts to ask in advance so all guests have a comfortable evening. The parking lot should not be too far away, but if it is, ask the restaurant manager if valet service is available for those guests who might prefer it. A dinner party at a restaurant with family, friends or even professional colleagues often makes for an enjoyable evening for guests and hosts alike. But hosts must consider several factors before ultimately choosing where they and their guests will dine.
Rathskeller from Page 27 says. “Our daily specials are almost like a whole additional restaurant, with Southern, Asian, German, and French-influenced dishes. We don’t get into the fusion concept. Instead we replicate each dish as authentically as possible. Some specials include German sausages and spaetzle (a homemade noodle), chicken-fried steak, duck confit, and coconut curry The Roasted Beet Salad chicken stir-fry. “We get inspired by the product that comes in and we have fun putting our creativity to work,” Butch notes. The Rathskeller will be bringing in lots of fresh, local ingredients such as fish from Point Judith and produce from a farm that’s literally a stone’s throw from the restaurant, he adds. The Rathskeller is building a reputation as a destination for not only refreshment but recreation. The
grounds feature a full-sized bocce court and three horseshoe pits. There is live entertainment in the tavern several nights per week. This summer the Rathskeller will host clambakes, car shows, and other special events. The Charlestown Rathskeller Tavern is located at 489A Old Coach Road in Charlestown. It is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner from 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.; the bar is open until 1:00 a.m. The Rathskeller does not accept reservations but does have a call-ahead policy. For more information, call (401) 792-1000, send an email to rathskellertavern@yahoo.com, or visit www. thecharlestownrathskeller.com. the Mystic Diner
By Marshall Williams • Special to The Sun
The man behind the Parthenon diners in Branford and Old Saybrook, CT. has brought the same classic comfort food to Mystic. In the Mystic Diner just off the Mystic exit on I-95, John Sousoulas has created a “home away from home” for local folks as well as tourists. “What I really want is to bring back the idea of a home away from home for people,” Sousoulas says with a big grin – “a great old-fashioned diner that people can frequent often, where they know the food will be affordable, and will have a really high quality and consistency.” His menu for the 290-seat diner features some Greek specialties reflecting his family heritage along with classic diner fare. “We have great omelettes, and weekday breakfast specials including coffee that we hope will attract people who work in the local businesses and come from the community, and who will make it a regular thing. We keep our prices low so this will be possible, and we’re continuing the traditions we’ve learned from our diners in Branford and Old Saybrook.”
The Cobb Salad
For lunch and dinner, Souloulas offers daily specials as well as his own favorite recipes like Chicken Souvlaki, Baked Moussaka and Spanakopita. Along with the Greek dishes he serves up a signature Monte Cristo hot sandwich featuring turkey, ham, and Swiss cheese on French toast, Italian dishes like Penne a la Vodka and Chicken Francese, seafood including Sea Scallops, and classic diner fare like Baked Meat Loaf with Gravy, Baby Back Ribs and Chicken in a Basket. “We’ve combined all the things we’ve done well in Branford and Old Saybrook,” Sousoulas says, “and our goal is that people will come back again and again when they realize how good it is, and how affordable.” Sousoulas learned the business from his father, who ran the recent award-winning Parthenon Diner in Branford in the 1980s and he knows the local area well because he worked as a computer engineer at Electric Boat while helping out his Dad on evenings and weekends. “I guess that it got to be in my blood,” he says with a laugh, “but this is what I really love to do.”
Bananna French Toast
The Mystic Diner & Restaurant is at 253 Greenmanville Avenue in Mystic, just off I-95 Exit 90, and next to the Howard Johnson Inn. The diner is open seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., with Breakfast served all day, as well as Lunch served after 11 a.m., and Dinner, served from 4 to 10 p.m.
