n summers past, just before sunset, droves of fun-loving families and friends used to pile up in cars and head out to thousands of drive-in theaters across the United States. Popcorn was passed as everyone enjoyed the popular movies playing on the enormous screens, listening to the soundtracks that piped through tinny speakers clipped to the windows. In the 1980s, however, this treasured bit of Americana faded into cultural history, with only a few drive-ins remaining to dot the landscape.

Fortunately, these once-prevalent outdoor theaters have enjoyed a bit of a revival in recent years-and thanks to the Misquamicut Business Association (MBA), locals and tourists alike can enjoy the old-fashioned drive-in movie experience all summer long right here at the beach.

This is the fourth year the MBA is offering drive-in movies as part of its slate of summertime entertainment. Movies are screened on Thursday nights in July and August on a huge screen set up in the Tourist Center parking lot on Atlantic Avenue.

When folks pull into the lot on movie night, all they have to do is pick a parking spot and tune their car radios to 1620 am; the soundtrack plays right through the car’s stereo system. Each movie starts at 9 p.m., preceded at 8:15 p.m. by a reel of retro TV commercials and ads for local events and businesses, put together by local videographer Chris Walsh.

ome find amazing live music on Monday and Wednesday nights this summer at Misquamicut. The Town of Westerly has gathered an impressive lineup of top-notch artists for its fourth-annual “Tunes on the Dunes,” which actually consists of two separate concert series: “Monday Night Jams” and “Blues on the Beach.” The concerts take place on the “old” Westerly Town Beach. Monday Night Jams are an eclectic set of shows that lean heavily on rock and roll. The popular Blues on the Beach, which draws 2,000 to 3,000 people on average each week, was started by former town councilor Nick Castagna in 2001. Many of the musicians who perform in the Wednesday-night tunefests have connections to Westerly — such as several members of The Fabulous Thunderbirds and former members of Roomful of Blues. Tunes on the Dunes is sponsored by the Town of Westerly with support from Washington Trust Company, WBLQ, L+M Westerly Hospital, South County Hospital - Orthopedics Center and South View Orthopedics. All concerts are from 6 to 8 p.m. on the “old” Westerly Town Beach. Concerts are rain or shine; if the weather is inclement, the bands will play in the Windjammer Ballroom at 321 Atlantic Avenue. isquamicut Business Association offers fantastic family entertainment with “Magic by the Sea with Larry and David!” This show, now in its fourth year at Misquamicut, features professional magicians Larry Stangel and David Hill, Rhode Island residents who combine magic, comedy, and music for an hour-long extravaganza designed to appeal to kids aged 3 through 103.

The hour-long show runs every Thursday in July and August at the Windjammer Ballroom. The show consists of big illusions, scarf tricks, close-up card tricks, and other sleightof- hand delights. One of the big illusions — “The Metamorphosis” — was made famous by Houdini. Larry is handcuffed in an enclosed container and then — Abracadabra! — David is in the box and Larry is on the outside! How do they do it?
“The Amazing Larry” has been entertaining audiences with his signature brand of magic and comedy for more than 26 years. He started performing magic at age 10 and has entertained at night clubs, corporate events, private parties, fairs, festivals and even weddings. He makes his home in North Smithfield. David Hill, who hails from North Providence, did his first magic show at the age of five for the Rhode Island Societies of Magicians’ Young Magicians’ Night. In 1997 he performed

s Springfest welcomed the 2014 season, Fallfest will close it out with live music, family entertainment and a great way to enjoy the fall in Westerly. Fallfest will take place at the Misquamicut State Beach Friday, Sept. 12, from 5 – 11 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 14, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Rockwell Amusements will provide a worldclass carnival featuring spectacular rides. Rockwell features kiddie rides and games. Circle K Petting Zoo will be offered for children of all ages to interact with goats, llamas, sheep and more. Pony Rides will also be offered. The Classic Car Club will be on display with hot rods and classics. Tivia prizes, and People’s Choice Trophis and Category awards will be handed out. The club is open to all special interest cars.
Food vendors will feature burgers and hot dogs to fish and chips and lobster and everything in between. Refreshments including Del’s Lemonade, Ice Cream, fried dough, cotton candy and more will be available. There will be a large area with picnic tables for patrons to enjoy whatever they choose. The Beer, BBQ and Bands tent will be on the pond side of Paddy’s beach, adjacent to the main Fallfest site. A “Pondfire” will be the centerpiece, with fire pits in and around the pond, as well as games and prizes. This area is 21 and over with proper ID. Tickets are $7 per day, children under 4 are free. The event will feature a large bonfire, live music, the Westerly Morris Men, Kentish Guards Fife and Drum as well as a reenactment of Guy Fawke’s trial. All are welcome and the event is free of charge. The story of Guy Fawkes begins in 1605, when Fawkes and a group of coconspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
However, in an attempt to protect a friend in the House of Lords, one of the group members sent an anonymous letter warning his friend to stay away from the parliament on the evening in question. The warning letter reached the King, and the conspirators were caught, tortured and executed. Guy Fawkes and his friends had rolled 36 barrels of gunpowder under the Houses of Parliament. These days, Guy Fawkes Day is also known as Bonfire Night. The event is commemorated every year with fireworks and burning an effigy of Fawkes on a bonfire.

In the summer of 1963 the Beach Boys were busy writing songs about hot rods, deuce coupes and car clubs, and a culture of cruising cars and gear heads were reinventing cool. Car culture lives on in summers at Misquamicut as the Misquamicut Business Association (MBA) prepares for this year’s season of the Misquamicut Classic Car Club. R. Scott Campbell and the MBA are currently recruiting classic car owners and special interest car clubs from Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts to take part in a summer long series of events along Atlantic Avenue, the long road along the Misquamicut coast. Really, is there a better road in Westerly to drive up and down to flaunt your ride? Atlantic Avenue is the kind of iconic road made for cruising. The Misquamicut Classic Car Club will take part in the Misquamicut Fall Fest and other events throughout the season. The Car Club will host weekly cruise nights every Thursday down Atlantic Avenue all summer long. “As a Baby Boomer, I remember driving my 65 GTO down from Central Connecticut every weekend and just cruising along the beach ‘looking for love,’ hanging out, enjoying the surf, sun, sand and all the people turning their heads as I drove by in my muscle car,” explains Misquamicut Classic
Car Club founder R. Scott Campbell. “It just doesn’t get any better than that.” As one of Rhode Island’s most exciting classic car clubs, Campbell looks forward to another season of muscle cars, roaring engines and classic flames. “Remember the old joke ‘how many people can you fit in a Volkswagen?’ Campbell asks. “Well, how many classic cars and special interest vehicles can we fit at Misquamicut Beach?” Campbell envisions Misquamicut becoming a haven for cruising enthusiasts. Hobbyists, enthusiasts and spectators alike will enjoy amazing cars in one of the greatest venues in Rhode Island. What’s more summer than cars, drive-in movies, music and the beach? The Misquamicut Classic Car Club is sponsored by Tasca Chrysler of Westerly, located at 9 Post Road and 102.3 The Wolf, the Shoreline’s classic rock station. Weekly car show and cruise nights start Thursday, June 5, from 5 – 8:30 p.m. at the tourist booth and drive-in movie parking lot located next to the water slide on Atlantic Avenue. Each Thursday at 7 p.m., an Area Parade Cruise will head over to Watch Hill, into Downtown Westerly and back to Atlantic Avenue. Raffle tickets will be sold each week for a chance to win major prizes, there will also be trivia prizes, food and beverages with the classic tunes supplied by 102.3fm The Wolf. The classic rock station will sponsor each of the clubs many events throughout the summer. went down to the pond, and came back with 15 wonderful ideas to rebuild, landscape, and to increase the use of the pond, many of which we are now slowly implementing.” The pedestrian path and the street edge bike path are in the works now, with plans for kayaking classes and an environmental center in the future. “We want to look at the pond as a source for future economic development. We have a wonderful opportunity now to educate, and that’s where we’re headed,” Shellman added. The Town Planner went on to emphasize that the pond is a great and safe place for families to spend the day. “The water is warmer than the ocean, there’s clamming, hermit crabs and horseshoe crabs the kids can have fun collecting, no undertow to worry about, and you can walk out 100 feet and still the water is only up to your knees.”
One pauses and looks across the pond from the area that will eventually serve as a bike path. The wind is blowing through the tall stalks of perennial grass called phragmites, causing them to move back and forth rhythmically under a perfect blue sky. They frame the water, complementing the natural beauty of the area. Gazing across the shimmering pond it’s clear that this is indeed a hidden treasure about to be uncovered. Small groups of protectors like Save the Bay, the Town of Westerly, and Global Green have been taking care of it to this point. Now they want to introduce it to the world. It’s becoming apparent that in a very short time that introduction is most definitely going to occur; and Winnapaug will be the pond that everybody knows, uses, and enjoys as we look to the future and new ways of using and improving upon our environment.
