Westerner seeks new owner

Alpha Mail unique letterboxes in the neighbourhood

The Westerner is turning a new page in its 20-year history. David Paterson, who has been the owner of The Westerner since 2006, is looking to move on. “All good things come to an end, and that’s the same here,” David said. “The Westerner is a great paper. It’s sad to leave, the staff are wonderful, and the paper is a true part of the community. It’s been such a rewarding experience.” He hopes that someone in the local community is interested in purchasing the paper, to keep it local and independent. “One of the things we’ve prided ourselves on is that we’ve remained independent – through the GFC, the growth of the internet, the demise of so many other newspapers,” David said. “But thanks to the loyalty of our readers and advertisers, as well as lots of hard work, we’ve withstood the challenges.” For more information about the purchasing the paper, contact David on 0402 495 315 or email david@thewesterner.com.au.

spotted at Clear Mountain Have you seen kids playing that hugely popular computer game called Minecraft, in which players can construct all manner of things out of cubes? We imagine the person behind this quirky letterbox may be a Minecraft devotee who, after being shown a stack of leftover bricks from the construction of a new house at Clear Mountain, said something like, “I’ve got an idea, leave it with me.”

Water’s upward spiral By Lee Oliver

T

he health of Moreton Bay Region’s three main water catchments has improved, despite population growth. The Pine, Pumicestone and Caboolture Catchments recorded better grades in the 2016 Healthy Waterways Report Card, released last week, compared to 2015. A decrease in pollutant loads has helped boost water quality in our local rivers and estuaries. The Healthy Waterways Report Card also assesses progress towards restoring and maintaining key habitats, ecosystems and fish populations, and improving and maintaining water quality. Report author Healthy Waterways and Catchments gave the Pine Catchment a B– grade, up from a C or ‘fair’ grade last year. Estuarine water quality in Pine Catchment improved from ‘fair’ to ‘excellent’ and pollutant loads significantly improved from ‘very high’ to ‘very low’, although its freshwater stream health declined to ‘poor’. Residential development is the major pressure on the Pine Catchment, which

includes the South and North Pine Rivers, Lake Samsonvale and Lake Kurwongbah. Pumicestone Passage improved from a B– to a B+ and scored a 4.5-star rating for its “social and economic benefit”. Pollutant loads were also down for the Caboolture Catchment, whose rating rose from C+ to B this year. “While favourable climatic conditions have contributed to these improvements, they are also due to the efforts of... council, our local businesses, community groups and residents,” Moreton Bay Region councillor Peter Flannery (Division 2) said. As part of its bid to improve waterways, council removed 630 tonnes of submerged aquatic weed last financial year. Unitywater spokesperson Simon Taylor said its sewage treatment plant upgrades, and the planting of more than 12,000 creekside seedlings, helped contribute to improved waterways health. “We are proud that we meet strict environmental standards. The effluent we discharge back into the environment... doesn’t threaten water quality,” Mr Taylor said.

Westerner Flashback The

In 2016, The Westerner community newspaper celebrates its 20th birthday: two decades of informing and entertaining the residents of Pine Rivers, and later the Moreton Bay Region. To celebrate the milestone, this year we are going back through the archives to revisit some of the biggest and most entertaining stories printed over the past 20 years. THIS WEEK IN 2001: Fancy running between Samford and Dayboro? That’s what keen runners did back at the start of the new millennium. The Samford to Dayboro Classic foot race saw athletes run 23km along Mt Samson Road, the main road between the towns. One entrant was former Moreton Bay councillor Gary Parsons, who ran around Australia in 1999 for charity and founded the Mt Mee Classic running race in the 1990s. The inaugural Samford to Dayboro Classic race was held on 19 November 2000. The Westerner reported that a total of 163 runners took part in the second and final Samford to Dayboro Classic held on 28 October 2001, won by Don Wallace. Twelve years later cyclists got the idea to race between Samford and Dayboro, as part of the Bravehearts Time Trial. A fundraising event which attracted riders from as far away as Cairns, Western Australia and Victoria, including Olympic cyclist Robbie McEwen and former Brisbane Lions AFL star Marcus Ashcroft, it raised money to help fund counselling and education services for children affected by sexual assault.

Margaret Sellin, Dayboro Margaret is a member of the Dayboro Conversation Club social group. Why I became involved in the Dayboro Conversation Club… After suffering a stroke, I was left with one good arm and unable to do the activities that I used to do. I also was lonely and needed the company of others. One of my favourite memories of the club… is when I first went and was made to feel so welcome by the helpers of the group and Dayboro Lions Club members who help out. My advice to anyone who has just retired… Join something like the (Dayboro Conversation) club to bridge the gap from every week’s work, to nothing to occupy your mind. The best thing about living in Dayboro… is the way the country people are so friendly and caring. Most of the residents are always willing to help you and make you feel welcome. My other involvements in the Dayboro community… I am a member of Dayboro CWA and until retiring from Ocean View to Dayboro I was a member of Ocean View Rural Fire Brigade. When I was young… I always wanted to be a flight attendant and travel. Something most people don’t know about me… I was born and bred at Laceys Creek and did all my schooling at the one-teacher school, finishing at Grade 8, then helped my dad on his dairy farm. If I could invite any three people to dinner… I would choose Jamie Durie, Graham Ross and Scott Cam. The Dayboro Conversation Club meets each Friday from 10am to 1.30pm at Jack’s Place, Dayboro Catholic Church at 135 McKenzie Street, Dayboro. To find out more phone 0417 794 314 or email dayboroconversationclub@ gmail.com.

Art hits the mark for good health Mark Pearson will exhibit some of his “therapeutic” artworks in The Future We Want art exhibition.

F

or Mark Pearson, art is therapy. He uses art to help manage his depression, and also works to help mental health patients to “express themselves creatively”. “I have had a very long battle with depression that comes with having ASD and major hearing loss,” Mr Pearson said. “When I was in hospital, the art therapist liked the sketches in my book. She encouraged me to do more than them. “I found something that I felt that I was good at for the first time ever, and it was rewarding in some ways to be acknowledged by others for that.” Mr Pearson said his “realist” paintings often have hidden meanings that are of importance to him. The Cashmere resident will submit three works to The Future We Want, an art exhib-

ition designed to broaden the community’s perspectives around disability. Disability service provider EPIC Assist will host the exhibition, to celebrate International Day of People with Disability. EPIC CEO Bill Gamack said the exhibition, to feature more than 170 artworks from around 50 professional and emerging artists, promotes “looking forward and creating a brighter future for people with disability”. “The standard of artwork is incredible, and the pieces are distinct and unique, reflecting the journey of the artists and the challenges and triumphs often associated with their disability,” he said. The Future We Want exhibition runs from 28 November to 3 December at Aspire Gallery, 53 Kennedy Terrace, Paddington, open daily from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

Ten years on, Lisa rings in first hometown circus show

After ten years with Cirque du Soleil, Clear Mountain’s Lisa Skinner will finally get to perform with the world-renowned circus troupe in Brisbane.

By Lee Oliver

A

fter a decade with world-renowned circus troupe Cirque du Soleil, Lisa Skinner will finally perform in her home city for the first time. The Clear Mountain resident, a threetime Olympic gymnast, is part of the Kooza show which premieres tonight at Skygate, near Brisbane Airport DFO. Ms Skinner has previously performed in the Cirque du Soleil shows Alegria and Quidam in North America, Europe, Australia, Asia, South America and the Middle East. But the 35-year-old has never before performed in Brisbane. She thought she had finished her duties with Cirque du Soleil in February – just two months shy of ten years with the circus act – but got a request to perform acrobatic rings routines in Kooza in Australia. “I have just spent the past month-and-ahalf in Sydney, performing with them, and I’ve just picked up a temporary contract to

do the Brisbane leg,” Ms Skinner said. Her parents, Austin and Anne Skinner, have seen their daughter perform in cities such as Vienna and Hobart and are now looking forward to her hometown debut in the premiere of the Brisbane season. “For her I think it’s particularly poignant because so many of her friends are still here,” Mr Skinner said.

Serious about Selling?

“Since she was very young there was always a challenge and she seems to be able to pull it together when she needs to, which has always been wonderful. “I think the Sydney Olympics (in 2000) was the most nerve-wracking... as she was carrying a lot of weight (of expectation) on her shoulders and we were aware of that.” His daughter, a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medal winner, has always maintained that performing an aerial routine for Cirque du Soleil is less stressful than nailing a gymnastics routine at a major international competition. She said that might well change after she puts on her costume in readiness for her Kooza solo aerial hoop act in Brisbane. “If you’re performing in front of thousands of people you don’t know, you’re fine,” Ms Skinner said. “If you know one person in the audience, particularly a relative, the butterflies start to come.” Buy tickets to Kooza, on in Brisbane until 8 January, at www.cirquedusoleil.com.

Police executed 35 search warrants in Brisbane, Mackay, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast, resulting in 46 people being charged with a total of 164 offences. Just before 7pm, police were called to a Dauntless Lane address following reports of an altercation inside the property between two men. On arrival, police located one man with a serious wound to his abdomen. He was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment. A second man was transported to the Redcliffe Hospital for treatment to a possible concussion.

Milestone for family

W

hen family members attend Brent McKenzie’s wedding in Dayboro this weekend, the nuptials will double as a gathering of descendants of the district’s first European coloniser. The Strathpine local is a sixth-generation descendant of the first permanent nonindigenous settler who came to the Dayboro region 150 years ago. John and Janet McKenzie and their young family became the first Europeans to permanently reside in the Dayboro area, when they settled on the banks of North Pine River at Fishery Pocket, now known as Armstrong Creek, in 1866. The 80-acre selection was located near the current McCulloch Road, on the other side of the river from Apex Park on Mt Samson Road. The McKenzie’s fifth born child, Andrew McKenzie, was the first baby of European origin born in the Dayboro district. A bridge across North Pine River near the McKenzie family’s first land selection is called the John McKenzie Bridge. Dayboro resident Heather McKenzie is a fourth-generation descendant of John and Janet McKenzie, who emigrated to Brisbane from Scotland in 1855. She said the family was “aware and very proud” of its history in the Dayboro district.

“John McKenzie’s labours improved many things, including providing the timber for many of the older buildings still standing and used in the community today,” she said. “It (the family history) is something that I’ve always been aware of, to a degree, and made more aware of over the past ten years or so.” Ms McKenzie said there are seven generations of Australian-born McKenzies “scattered over an ever-widening area”. “I’ve lived in other places, but always seem to come back home,” she said. Carmel Bond from the Dayboro District Historical Society said 2017 is the 150th year of settlement by European immigrants in the Dayboro township. She said Portion 1 Parish of Samsonvale, “the block on which the majority of Dayboro township is situated today”, was leased by William Henry Day in 1868. Next year also marks 100 years since the town’s name was changed from Terrors Creek to Dayboro, in honour of Day. Between 1875 and 1892 the township was known as Hamilton, before being changed to Terrors Creek.

he last time Samford State School failed to win the Grovely Six Way Swim Meet, Paul Keating was Australia’s Prime Minister, Michael Jordan was the world’s top sports star, and Boyz II Men and Billy Ray Cyrus were top of the pops. If the school can again win the annual interschool swim meet on 6 December, it will be its 24th straight victory since 1993. Grovely State School will host the event, now dubbed the Grovely Five Way Swim Meet following the withdrawal of Patricks Road from the competition this year. John Picken, who runs sports at Samford State School, said the swimming carnival encourages “maximum participation”. He said it was “super important” to get children “involved and enthusiastic about sport in primary school”. “If you don’t engage them in sport from an early age they don’t develop a love or a passion for sport. years because there’s so many other distractions in their life,” Mr Picken said. In the past, Olympic swimmers and Australian water polo players and triathletes have swum for Samford State School. “The current kids know of those people that have been here in the past and been part of the school team and gone to the Grovely meet,” Mr Picken said. “For them to be following in those footsteps, I think it means a lot to them.” Swimmers will also compete to win The Westerner Shield, awarded since 2008. The winner is determined by dividing each school’s total points by the number of students enrolled at the school.

LAMB CUTLETS WITH MINT HOLLANDAISE

nsulin is one of the most commonly discarded drugs in the first world. However, half of the world’s population with diabetes cannot afford or access the insulin they need to survive. Every year in Australia thousands of dollars’ worth of insulin is thrown away – and yet every six seconds someone around the world dies as a result of diabetes. Insulin for Life is pledging to save 25,000 lives by 2020 across the world. The organisation, which originated in Melbourne, is going global as Insulin for Life Global, to raise broader awareness and to help address two issues: avoidable death and usable waste. Insulin for Life collects unopened and in-date insulin and other diabetes supplies from countries like Australia, and then transports it to people in need. The insulin is distributed free to those who require it, including three-quarters of people with diabetes who live in low and middle income countries, where the cost of insulin can exceed an annual salary. To learn more or to donate insulin visit www.insulinforlife.org. People wanting to assess their diabetes risk level, or speak to a professional about diabetes management, can do so at some local pharmacies. These include Samford Chemmart, Discount Drug Stores Eatons Hill, and Arana Plaza Day and Night Chemmart Chemist. World Diabetes Day, a day to give voice to people living with diabetes and to recognise risk factors leading to Type-2 diabetes, was held on 14 November.

Hollandaise is the cousin of béarnaise sauce, and both play a very important role in French cuisine. Flavoured with tarragon, béarnaise is terrific with beef, but with lamb the natural choice has to be this rich, creamy hollandaise, enhanced with fresh and dried mint.

To make the hollandaise, combine the shallot, white wine, vinegar, dried mint and peppercorns in a small saucepan over high heat and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat medium–low and simmer for 3–5 minutes, or until most of the liquid has evaporated. Transfer to a heatproof bowl that fits snugly over a saucepan and set aside to cool. Half-fill the saucepan with water and bring to the boil over high heat. Reduce to a simmer. Add the egg yolks to the shallot reduction in the bowl, along with a pinch of salt, then rest the bowl over the saucepan, making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water, and start whisking. It should foam and then thicken to the consistency of thin (pouring) cream. As you continue to whisk, the volume should increase. After about 8–10 minutes, you will be able to see the bottom of the bowl, which means the mixture is cooked. Serves 4 1½ tablespoons olive oil 16 lamb cutlets, seasoned with sea salt and pepper mint sprigs, to garnish MINT HOLLANDAISE 3 golden shallots, finely chopped 60 ml (2 fl oz/¼ cup) white wine 1½ tablespoons white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon dried mint 1 teaspoon crushed black peppercorns 4 egg yolks sea salt 250 ml (9 fl oz/1 cup) Clarified butter 1 tablespoon finely chopped mint juice of ½ lemon freshly ground black pepper

Tip the water out of the saucepan and drape a tea towel (dish towel) over the empty pan. Put the bowl back in the saucepan, resting on the tea towel to reduce movement and keep it nicely stabilised. Pour a thin stream of clarified butter into the egg mixture, building the sauce by whisking constantly as you would a mayonnaise until all the butter has been incorporated. Stir in the fresh mint and lemon juice and season to taste with salt and pepper. Set aside until required. Heat a large frying pan or chargrill pan over very high heat and drizzle over the olive oil. Add the lamb cutlets (in batches if necessary) and cook for 2 minutes on each side, or until nicely caramelised and cooked to your liking. Transfer to a plate, cover with foil and leave to rest for a few minutes. Garnish the cutlets with mint leaves and serve with the mint hollandaise and a side of your favourite vegetables.

Singer finds therapy in old Used songs

T

he Used singer Bert McCracken says his band’s musical philosophy is “sharing snapshots in time”. The American emo-punk rock act’s early albums were soundtracks to many key moments in the lives of teenagers around the world. The Used is celebrating 15 years as a band by performing its landmark selftitled debut The Used (2002) and followup In Love and in Death (2004) in full. “We hear so much feedback about how much impact these records had... in a lot of people’s lives,” McCracken said. “They still have such a strong message of freedom and what it takes to get by and learn from our mistakes and become, quote-unquote, ‘better people’. “When we play it’s a night to remember what it’s like to be a kid again… and there’s nothing more free than that unbridled,

child-like enthusiasm at a rock show.” McCracken said The Used and In Love and in Death – both of which have each sold more than 500,000 copies in the USA alone – “changed my life completely”. He believes the songs on The Used, released just 17 months after the band’s inception, “reflect a more introspective look at ourselves” as teenagers. “I think that it’s really about songs that kind of speak to a more pure process of thinking,” McCracken said. “It was just another reason to celebrate those of us who are still here and made it through all the really trying and difficult times that come with being teen-aged.” In Love and in Death was recorded during a tumultuous time in McCracken’s life, including the death of his ex-girlfriend, who was pregnant with his child. “I went through a lot and I think that

experiencing things that every human being must go through – losing someone really close to you – I feel grateful now that I had a place to put that (emotion) down and had people around me to push me forward and keep me going,” he recalls. “This second record has become unbelievable therapy for me and being able to sing it for the last year, songs that we never sang before, has been beyond therapeutic.” When asked which albums he would love to see performed in full, McCracken lists Radiohead’s Kid A, Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Sunny Day Real Estate’s How it Feels to Be Something On. The Used will play In Love and in Death in full at the Eatons Hill Hotel on 9 December, and will perform The Used album in its entirety at the same venue on 10 December.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them It’s not good when you are easily distracted from a film by thoughts of what other movies it reminds you of. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the latest adaptation of work by J.K. Rowling, associated with her Harry Potter creation. In Potter lore, Fantastic Beasts is a textbook used by students at Hogwarts school of magic. Expanding this interesting concept into a film, the plot sees Fantastic Beasts writer and wizard Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) arrive in New York in 1926 after travelling the world to study magical creatures. Some of the creatures that he keeps in his suitcase escape and wreak havoc in the city (see Goosebumps). It threatens to disturb the uneasy peace between non-magic and magic residents, with the big city’s wizard congress fearing reprisal if they are outed (see X-Men). As Newt, Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) and – one-upping Newt in the stupid name stakes – Porpentina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), try to recapture the escaped beasts, Mary Lou Barebone (Samantha Morton) tries to expose wizards and witches and an evil force threatens to destroy New York City (see Ghostbusters). Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them isn’t a bad movie; it just tries to heap too many over-cooked ingredients onto the plate. Scenes of wonderment and touches of humour are tempered by banal dialogue and mundane characterisation. Waterston is endearing and Morton transcends the silly story, but the other performances are just good enough. Two thumbs up for the meticulous recreation of Jazz-era New York with on-point set design and stunning costumes worthy of awards. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them uneasily straddles enchanting and endearing fantasy (hit) and supernatural thriller (miss). This uneasy mix is best encapsulated by the film’s finale, in which tough, Untouchables-looking wizard ‘agents’ in bootlegger suits prance around while waving magic wands. 6/10

Dashing Mat set for nationals

Mathew McCouat from Warner will represent Queensland less than six months after taking up sprinting.

M

athew McCouat “always knew I had a bit of speed in me”. Now, under the guidance of Cathy Freeman’s former coach, he is proving it on the athletics track. McCouat, who up until a couple of months ago had never had a coach or used a sprinting block, will compete at one of the biggest athletics meets to be held in Australia this year. The Warner flyer will run for Queensland in the 100m sprint at the Australian School Sport Track and Field Championships in Canberra from 2-4 December, after winning the Queensland title last month. The 17-year-old, who started running at Dayboro Little Athletics when he lived at Samsonvale, has only had a coach for three months. “Every year in high school I have competed in the school athletics, not really taking it seriously, just wanting to participate in school events and raise school house points,” McCouat said. “After progressing from school athletics

to district to regionals, and having no competitive experience in running, one of my teachers from Pine Rivers State High School asked me if I had ever had training or been coached, which I hadn’t.” McCouat now trains at Caboolture Athletics Club under Martin Roberts, 83, who coached the likes of Olympic gold medallist Freeman and Commonwealth Games sprinter Michelle Cutmore.

g n i t r o p s My life

He has since slashed his personal best time for 100m down from 11.97 seconds to the 10.74 seconds that helped him win a state titles gold medal at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre in October. “He ran the fastest time overall, of all age groups (at the state titles), so he is no slouch,” Roberts said. “He’s going give the nationals a hell of a shake.” McCouat believes he will have to drop a quarter of a second from his best time to be in contention for a medal in Canberra. “What I most likely will have to run and what I hope to run to be able to win nationals is 10.50 (seconds),” he said. “That is around about a metre (of speed) I will need to find before my next run.” A representative rugby league and Oztag player, McCouat won gold with the 4x100m open boys relay team at the Queensland Schools championships and will also contest the 4x100m relay at the nationals. “To represent Queensland for athletics and this being the furthest I have ever been for sport, it will be very surreal and exciting,” McCouat said.

Barry Maher, Samford District Bowls Club Team: Division 2 Position: Skip At what age did you start playing lawn bowls and why did you choose this sport? In 1982, Brisbane hosted Commonwealth Games and Moorooka was the venue for lawn bowls. Seeing players age 21 or so from Canada spiked my interest. What is your biggest achievement in bowls to date? I think it was 1996 when I won all four disciplines – Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours – so it was a team effort which got me there. Also, being in the Pennant Team to win our first flag. What sports did you play before trying lawn bowls? Rugby league, union and surf lifesaving. What is your favourite or best bowls skill? The draw shot using the old bowls demonstrated just how skilful the early club bowlers were, so I was keen to learn from them. How do you prepare for a game? Practice in the lead-up period and observe your opponent’s game. What are the best things about lawn bowls? Meeting people/members from all walks of life. Listen and learn from our elders. Attributes needed to be a good player. Patience, temperament and skill with a degree of concentration when addressing the mat. The best things about my club. Samford Owls is renowned as the friendly club. We now have the best carpet greens under shadecloth with a fully air conditioned clubhouse.

Injury sours winning tour

A

season of milestones for Sam Thaiday has ended with the Samford Village rugby league player suffering the worst injury of his professional career. Thaiday underwent surgery in London after suffering a fractured cheekbone and eye socket in a head clash with England forward James Graham on 14 November. The injury occurred during Australia’s 36-18 win over England in the Four Nations tournament match played in London. Thaiday, who played in Australia’s 54-12 win over Scotland earlier in the tournament, suffered an injury to the bone around his eye socket in 2007. The 31-year-old missed Australia’s 34-8 win over New Zealand in the Four Nations final played in Liverpool on Monday. In a year of major milestones, Thaiday played game 250 for the Brisbane Broncos in the National Rugby League. Last month he reached Test match number 30 for Australia, a decade after making his debut for the Kangaroos. “It’s definitely a different feeling between playing now and playing (for Australia) in 2006,” Thaiday told The Westerner before the Australia-England match. “It was more shock and surprise as a www.thewesterner.com.au

young 21-year-old to be selected in the Australian team. “It’s still a real honour to play (for Australia) but I enjoy these camps and these tours more now because I don’t know how many more there’s going to be.” Thaiday said he was enjoying his role as a senior player in the Kangaroos team. “We’ve got a good mix in our squad between older and younger players,” he said. “I’m not the oldest, which is always good, but I enjoy the role. “Hopefully I can hang around for a couple more years and play some more games with these young guys that are coming through.”

Despite suffering his horrific injury, Thaiday would have enjoyed Australia’s 18-point win over England, coached by his Brisbane Broncos mentor Wayne Bennett. “It’s always good beating Wayne at anything, whether it’s cards, bowling, but it will be even more satisfying if we can beat him on the footy field,” Thaiday told The Westerner pre-game. Thaiday has been shortlisted for the Indigenous All Stars team to play the World All Stars selection in Newcastle on 10 February. Voting for the team at allstars.nrl.com closes on 2 December. – Lee Oliver
