Good will dousing fire heartache By Lee Oliver

T

he Dayboro community is rallying to support a couple who lost everything in a tragic house fire last week. Nigel and Kellie Stokes’ home at Kobble Creek was gutted by fire on the evening of 30 November. The couple was at home when the rented house on Mt Samson Road caught ablaze. The couple and their three dogs were not harmed in the fire, which comes a year after the passing of Mr Stokes’ brother. Clare Stokes said her sister-in-law and brother, who has lived in the Dayboro district for 40 years, were in the process of moving out of the house. “They were in the process of vacating the property. It had been their home for 11 years,” Ms Stokes said. “All of their everyday items were in the house. Fortunately a few of their things that had been in storage – winter clothes, that sort of thing – had already been moved. “Their fridge, washing machine, all their clothes, personal effects, mementos and jewellery… was all in the house.” The couple, who have serious health

conditions, lost vital medication in the fire. “I think the easiest way to support them, if anyone was in a position to be able to donate... would be to seek any vouchers for any of the major stores where they might be able to pick up bits and pieces, if needed,” Ms Stokes said. “But absolutely anything is welcome.” As well as losing their most treasured possessions, the Stokes will need help to get back on their feet and to find another place to rent. A Facebook page supporting the Stokes and an online fundraising page were set up on the night of the fire. More than $2000 was raised within 48 hours of the blaze. Ms Stokes said the “amazing” support of the Dayboro community had “left me speechless”. “The community spirit and how all the families pull together… it’s tremendous,” she said. “It’s amazing that there’s such generosity from the community, particularly this time of year because it’s hard for a lot of people.” Donate to the Stokes at www.gofundme. com/kellienigel-samsonvale-housefire and www.facebook.com/kellieandnigel.

Westerner Flashback The

In 2016, The Westerner community newspaper celebrates its 20th birthday: two decades of informing and entertaining the residents of Pine Rivers, and later the Moreton Bay Region. To celebrate the milestone, this year we are going back through the archives to revisit some of the biggest and most entertaining stories printed over the past 20 years.

THIS WEEK IN 2007: Kelsey Hartnett was the first winner of The Westerner’s annual ‘Christmas at My Place’ competition, with her drawing gracing the front cover of the Christmas 2007 edition of the paper. Now in its tenth year, the competition asked local primary school children to draw a picture of Christmas at their home – or how they would like to spend 25 December. Entries have featured Santa Claus in flight, family members exchanging gifts around Christmas trees, Christmas lights, snowmen, Christmas at the beach – even koalas with reindeer antlers. Subsequent winners ty were Josephine Quodling, Jacqueline communi Vincent, Eliza Bertwistle, Tayla Petroff, ’ place ng At My Place toThegetperfgreaectt savi Sophie Grevell, Freya Morgan, Nathaniel ‘Christmas on toys Royce and Corey Briese-Marshall. off ing Sell The 2016 winner, whose wonderful drawing adorns the front cover of this edition of The Westerner, is Hannah Makings, of Mt Pleasant. Hannah previously won second prize with her drawings in 2012 and 2015. Hannah, along with Jade Mann and Luca Plant, the second and third place winners, respectively, will receive a gift voucher from The Toy Outlet at Brendale, which has been sponsoring our Christmas drawing competition since its inception.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! ENJOY A HAPPY & SAFE NEW YEAR

A Deb Rogers, Arana Hills Deb is a member of The 7 Sopranos, a seven-piece opera vocal group which will perform at the IGA Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols this Friday night. My first music performance… was an ANZAC Day performance when I was in Grade 3 with my primary school choir. My most memorable performance… was a gig I was offered to sing with Michael Buble and Naturally 7 during their 2008 Australian tour. My favourite Christmas songs… are The Christmas Song (‘Chestnuts roasting on an open fire’), Believe (theme song to Polar Express) and That’s Christmas to Me (Pentatonix). My earliest memories of the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols… are being surrounded by thousands of candles sparkling while O’ Holy Night was being sung. It was like being surrounded by thousands of fireflies. Truly magical. Three records in my record collection I couldn’t part with… The Bing Crosby Christmas LP, Ella Fitzgerald’s best of album and of course, The 7 Sopranos’ Popcorn album. The best piece of advice I have been given… was from the late, great Australian opera director, John Milson. He would always say... “If you don’t know the words, just sing ‘La!’” He gave me permission to make my mistakes but to keep going while doing so. If a movie were made about my life… I would be played by Kate Winslet or if way, way, way down the track, I would hope Helen Mirren. My advice to aspiring musicians and singers… is to follow the career that YOU want, not the career that someone else is pushing you to have. What I would like for Christmas… is peace on Earth and a new bikini, please Santa!

The IGA Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols are on at Brisbane Riverstage on 10 December from 5pm. The 7 Sopranos’ latest album Popcorn is out now. Visit the7sopranos.com.

unique Christmas tree with a message has popped up at Samford. Located at the Samford Commons precinct, the 4m high ‘tree’ is made from repurposed goods such as bailing twine, fencing wire, fishing line, used tennis balls, an old light pole and compact discs, which sparkle in the sunlight. The tree, pictured, was erected last week by Samford Commons volunteers and two Skilling Queenslanders for Work trainees. “It’s really a statement that you can make pretty amazing things on a budget. The tree cost almost nothing,” Linda Murray from Samford Commons said of the tree, also a statement about the amount

of rubbish dumped at Christmas time. “There’s all this waste around. Instead of just throwing them on the dump, what other things can be done with them, creative things?” Samford State School students also helped out with the sustainability project, while the Trevena Glen Farm and Equine Action Queensland charity donated twine. The words ‘Samford Commons’ has been spelt out on a fence at the Mt Samson Road property, by using old plastic milk bottles.

Family’s unique way to beat the heat

A

Warner family is likely to be the envy of their neighbours on hot days this summer. The Gormley family has installed a 50m long pool-less waterslide in their backyard. The waterslide comes from the defunct Australian Woolshed, the popular tourist attraction once located on Samford Road at Ferny Hills, which closed in 2006.

Craig and Tegan Gormley purchased two fibreglass waterslides from the Gumtree trading website for only $1500, selling one and keeping the other. The restoration and construction of their waterslide, and installing a pump to recirculate the water, cost more than $8000. “We get a few people knocking on our door asking about it,” Mrs Gormley said.

POLICE BEAT Armed robbery charges, Petrie and Albany Creek: An 18-year-old Kallangur man has appeared in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on charges relating to a number of recent armed robberies across Moreton Bay Region. Police allege that the man, armed with a firearm, robbed a liquor outlet on Bellville Road, Petrie and threatened a female employee on 28 November. The accused was also charged with stealing cash from a liquor store on Albany Creek Road at Albany Creek on 27 November, stealing cash from a convenience store on College Street, North Lakes on 25 November, and discharging a firearm before fleeing a service station on Old Gympie Road, Dakabin on the same day. Serious crash, Kallangur: Forensic Crash Unit officers are appealing for witnesses to a serious traffic crash at Kallangur on 3 December. At 8.30pm a male pedestrian pushing a bicycle, crossing Anzac Avenue at the intersection with the entrance to the Kallangur Fair Shopping Centre, was struck by a black sedan. The man was then struck by an SUV also heading west along Anzac Avenue. The SUV stopped and its driver provided details to police, but the black sedan did not stop and police are appealing for the driver to contact them. The pedestrian, aged in his 30s, was transported to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a serious condition.

he best present that Dayboro Men’s Shed’s members could receive this Christmas is grant money. After years without a permanent home, the group’s new shed has been erected at the Dayboro Showgrounds. But a funding shortfall means the facility is some way off being used by members. With “a lot of big-ticket items to be addressed”, Dayboro Men’s Shed President Mark Woods said it could be winter 2017 – one year since the first sod was turned at the site – when the facility is completed. It was originally hoped the shed would be finished and in use by Christmas. Mr Woods said the community organisation is about $50,000 off finishing all work on the shed. “The labour-intensive projects, we are progressively addressing those, whilst making applications for funding to the various levels of government,” he said. “We’ve got our slab down, the shed’s up, we’ve got some power into the shed, but we’ve run out of money. “We can’t occupy (the shed) until we have a final certificate of occupancy, and to do so we need to complete the electrical works, and plumbing and stormwater works and internal fit-out need to be done.”

“There are further concrete works to be done to facilitate handicapped access and a water tank needs to be installed.” Mr Woods said while group members sold their handcrafted toys at the monthly Dayboro Markets and are “very enthusiastic sausage sizzlers” – its major revenue source – receiving government grants was essential for the continuation of the group. “If we got funded... and if the money was there then we probably could have it (all shed work) done by Christmas,” he said. Fellow Dayboro Men’s Shed member Mike Owner believes the organisation is in a “catch-22” situation. “If we don’t get the shed open we can’t advertise for the local community to get more involved in it, so we’re not going to expand our membership,” he said. Since it was founded in 2011, Dayboro Men’s Shed activities, social outlets for retirees and the semi-retired, have taken place in members’ homes. The group has previously received funding from three governments, including Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Community Assistance Grants, the Queensland Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund, and $15,000 in Federal funding awarded mid-year.

Global goal for fashion duo

Isabel Byram of Ferny Hills and Alexandra Stokes of Warner hope to turn heads with their fashion designs.

A

lexandra Stokes and Isabel Byram have had a taste of the fashion scene abroad, and now want their own designs to have a global impact. They are set to make a mark on the fashion world after recently graduating from the Queensland University of Technology with Fine Arts degrees in fashion. Ms Stokes, from Warner, tries to “mix styles and eras for fashion together” for her “very feminine” designs. “I love designing garments that have a sense of fun and quirkiness, and prints and patterns often give my designs a sense of individuality,” she explains. “I am passionate about celebrating personal style, so pops of vintage or kitsch details usually make an appearance. “The most important aspect of fashion to me is how you can use it to visually communicate anything to the world through your personal expression.” Ms Byram loves the “problem solving element” of design – “I was able to find my own solutions and justify my ideas” – and the creative freedom fashion presents. “No one will ever create exactly the same thing and there is no set guidelines, which was really refreshing when you are in high

school and learning out of textbooks,” the Ferny Hills resident says. “I love a lot of movement and intrigue in my designs, always something that will make you look twice.” Both women studied overseas during their fashion courses, Ms Stokes completing a six-month exchange in Berlin while Ms Byram spent one

semester in Hong Kong. “Studying fashion on exchange broadened my horizons and gave me an appreciation for the cultural norms that you take for granted studying in your home country,” Ms Stokes said. “The whole culture of Berlin made designing very interesting, because the city is so visually stimulating, it’s a cultural melting pot, even the climate produces different design aesthetics.” Ms Byram hopes to create a “positive change” through her work in fashion. “As our natural resources become scarce, sustainable and ethical business practices are a must to be competitive in the industry, and I would like to be involved in ensuring this occurs,” she said.

Brilliant charity breaks barriers

W

hat started as a book about “rebuilding life after domestic violence” has developed into a new charity organisation. Following the release of the Broken to Brilliant book, which compiles the stories of ten survivors of domestic abuse, the Broken to Brilliant charity was established to “provide survivors with the help needed from other survivors”, its founder Kate Smith of Strathpine says. “Broken to Brilliant is survivors mentoring domestic violence survivors to create

a new chapter in their lives,” she said. “Over 400 books have been sold through the #GiveaBook campaign, which aims to place a book on each woman’s refuge bed in Australia.” Moreton Bay Region councillor Matt Constance is the first Patron of Broken to Brilliant, which works with people who have “safely left an abusive relationship”. “While there is a long road to recovery, whether female or male, old or young, the path has been walked before and support is there for those in need,” he said.

Celebrating old and new at Dayboro

acilities old and new at the Dayboro Showgrounds were recently celebrated by local residents. The original Dayboro Police Station, now the administration building of the Dayboro Show Society at the showgrounds on Mt Mee Road, was opened 100 years ago last month. Built at a cost of £795 ($1590), and with an officer’s residence attached, Dayboro’s first police station was opened on 29 November 1916. The station was opened five years to the day that Constable Alfred Leech was temporarily transferred to Dayboro, living in a rented house with stables and a feed room for the mounted policeman. Previously, police from Petrie had serviced the Dayboro region. When a new Dayboro Police Station was built in 1961, the old building was relocated to Laceys Creek Road, where it was

a slaughterman’s residence for a time. The building was purchased by the late Don Kerr, and used as his Pine Valley Veterinary Clinic, now known as University of Queensland Dayboro Veterinary Clinic. Construction of a new vet surgery saw the old building relocated to the Dayboro Memorial Showgrounds in 2013. Members of Dayboro’s show and historical societies, local police, and past and current Dayboro residents attended a small celebratory function in the 100-yearold building on 26 November. Amongst the attendees was Eleanor Carstairs of The Gap, the wife of the late Don Kerr, who lived in the building at Dayboro. Earlier on 26 November at the Dayboro

Showgrounds, the State Member for Pine Rivers Nikki Boyd officially opened a new amenities block for Dayboro Trail Riders club. Each male and female change facility has toilets, a hand wash basin and three showers. The new facility was partly funded by a $100,000 grant from the Queensland Government’s ‘Get in the Game’ sports funding scheme. It aims to increase participation in sport through clubs improving equipment and amenities, and families gaining access to new uniforms. SAMFORD VALLEY VETERINARY HOSPITAL EQUINE PRACTICE

Milestone for horse saviours

S

amford-based animal welfare organisation Equine Action Queensland is celebrating a milestone. The not-for-profit group, dedicated to improving welfare standards and finding new homes for surrendered equines, has taken delivery of two new horses. Eighteen-year-old mini mare Holly and six-year-old gelding Sinsi take to 20 the number of horses re-homed by Equine Action Queensland (EAQ), since its formation in 2013. Eleven of the 18 other horses that have come into the care of EAQ were adopted by families within the Moreton Bay Region. EAQ spokesperson Joanne Miller, of Yugar, said that the group’s volunteers are “justifiably proud” of re-homing 20 horses, some of which were acquired after being abused or neglected by owners. “Horses potentially can live well into their 30s and sadly the slogan ‘a horse is for life’ is very rarely adhered to in the horse world, especially once their perceived usability has been compromised,” she said.

Equine Action Queensland President Di Walduck, of Yugar, right, with Warner’s Lizzy Hanwright and Archie the horse.

“Finding homes for horses that are appreciated for what they are, and not what they could be, can be challenging but when we do find these wonderful people (to adopt a horse) it is so rewarding.” Melissa Hanwright from Warner, who adopted Archie the horse, is “very proud to be a part of a better future for all horses”. “EAQ only take on horses that are surrendered and in genuine need,” she said. “They do not purchase horses, which means they are not supporting irresponsible breeding practices.” Ms Miller said due to limited resources her self-funded group had adopted a “prevention rather than cure” approach.

“It is a sad fact... that we have turned away many more horses than we have rehomed, but if we are to continue our work we must stay within the limits of our resources,” she said. “It is because of this that we have looked more towards education to try and give horse owners a more insightful understanding of horses’ needs and the preventable common ailments, which compromises horses’ health and often leads them to EAQ. “We dream of a day when the need for (horse) ‘rescues’ no longer exists.” Find out more about Equine Action Queensland at equineactionqld.com.au.

Bakers’ dozen days of Christmas

I

t isn’t just Santa’s elves who will be working extra hard on Christmas Eve. Bakers at Dayboro Bakery will double the usual production to “make more Christmas goods than we’ve ever done before”, owner Scott Wiggins says. The bakery expects to make 5000 fruit mince tarts, 1200 butter shortbreads, 700 puddings of various sizes, as well as 2500 rum balls – collectively containing 5L of famous Bundaberg Rum – this festive season. “People are coming from everywhere, they’re coming from Redcliffe and all over north Brisbane,” Mr Wiggins said. “It’s freshly baked, country baked, and a

lot of people like that other alternative to stuff that’s baked at the supermarket. “We use all good ingredients: butter in our shortbread, rum in our rum balls, and our fruit (for fruit puddings) is all soaked in rum and brandy. “All the shortbread is worked by hand, so it’s very much a traditional way of doing things.” The bakery will also make around 2000 bread rolls and 200 sour-dough breads for consumption at Christmas. The Christmas treats, as well as hampers containing all of the products, are available now at Dayboro Bakery, 32 Williams Street, Dayboro. Phone 3425 1377.

A special treat for the kids (and adult chocolate lover’s) is our mouth-watering Self Saucing Chocolate Pudding. Simply heat, upturn and allow the delicious chocolate sauce to flow over the rich Mud Cake Pudding.

Our Traditional Christmas Puddings are packed full of spices & dried fruit soaked in brandy and rum. Simply heat in the microwave and serve with custard or ice cream. They come in single serve or family sizes. Fruit Mince Tarts and Christmas Butter Shortbread are made from different doughs but are both worked and sheeted to provide melt in your mouth eating quality.

Bundy Rum Balls are not really for the children but are delicious especially if you enjoy a rum or two. It breaks the baker’s heart making rum balls because we use genuine Bundaberg Rum in our recipe.

“Come and try our NEW SPELT SOUR DOUGH”

Spelt flour is from an ancient grain and some people with wheat intolerances suggest it is easier to digest than the wheat flour used today. Dayboro Spelt Bread is made using traditional sour dough techniques, long fermentation times and no added baker’s yeast. RRP $6.70

New York in his stride

Cashmere man is eyeing off running in more of the world’s biggest marathons after contesting the iconic New York Marathon for the first time. Jason Crostron finished last month’s race – the world’s largest marathon – in the top six per cent of about 51,000 runners, with a time of 3 hours and 25 minutes. The South Pine Striders running club member, who ran the Gold Coast Marathon in July, said his training regime for the New York event included running 80km to 90km per week over a three-month period. “After a short break (after the Gold Coast race) I generally followed a 12-week training program for this marathon, which included a combination of special interval sessions with South Pine Striders, long runs building up to around 35km, and a range of other runs in-between, he said. “The training program is typically tailored to the specific event. If I were training for a half-marathon it would likely include more

the New York Marathon was like running in a 46km parade. “There was a massive roar coming off of Queensborough Bridge into First Avenue that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, he said. “The two million spectators were awesome, especially in major areas like Brooklyn and Queens. They promised a 26.2 mile-long block party and that’s what they delivered! While temperatures of between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius were “perfect for running, Crostron said the “ups and downs over the various bridges were tough. “Marathons are always tough, no matter what, he said. “You just need to prepare yourself as best you can and make sure that your goal is achievable, based on how your training has progressed. The London, Paris, Berlin, Boston, Tokyo, Frankfurt and Vancouver Marathons are now on Crostron’s running ‘to do’ list.

Mountain war men in print

Rowena Crouch, Clay Matthews and Chantelle Francis at the launch of the new book Mt Mee ANZACs, a history of local soldiers who served in World War I.

M

t Mee State School students have played their part in keeping the memory of local soldiers alive. With assistance from the Mt Mee District Historical Society and the local historian Rowena Crouch, the students produced Mt Mee ANZACs, a book which details the local men who served in World War I. Pairs of Mt Mee Year 5 and 6 students were assigned a local soldier to research. Using the names of war veterans on a memorial board in the Mt Mee Public Hall as a starting point, the students researched a soldier and wrote a piece on them. “We went onto a website online and we found information and we got help from Mrs Crouch and she gave us information,” Mt Mee State School student Chantelle Francis said. Ms Francis, who researched the digger George Stewart Dagg, said three of the 12 troops from Mt Mee who served in World War I did not return home. “I enjoyed working with my partner and finding out that a lot of people came home from the war… but three didn’t make it home,” she said.

Mt Mee ANZACs profiles 12 soldiers: Robert Adamson, Arthur John Montgomery Bleakley, Joseph Cox, George Stewart Dagg, Robert Dawes, George Duncan Grant, William J. Harris, Victor Henry Hewitt, Ronald Edward MacArthur, John McAtee, Ralph Drew Mitchell and Edward Wilson. “The soldiers ‘came to life’ for the students instead of being names on a board or in a book,” Mrs Crouch said. “By researching, and writing, their articles, I feel it had more meaning to the students having them published (rather) than having them kept in a folder. “I believe that children should recognise what people have done in the past, and currently, to make Australia the great country it is today.” Mt Mee State School Principal Pam Carlile said the Mt Mee ANZACs project connected students to the past and “high-

lighted the role of the Australian army in another conflict other than Gallipoli”. She said the students built close ties with other community groups, adding the project allowed them to “contribute in a real manner to their community”. “It gave the children a chance to look through primary sources to collect information (and) children connected with the subject history as they grew more involved and attached to their soldiers,” Ms Carlile said. Mrs Crouch said Mt Mee ANZACs would be a companion piece to Amongst the Tall Timbers, a history book released for Mt Mee State School’s centenary in 1984. She said her interest in Mt Mee’s history began when she moved to the area as a teenager in 1963, and later taught local history as a teacher at Mt Mee School. “To me it (local history) was something that became more important as I aged, as newer residents came to Mt Mee and others left,” Mrs Crouch said. The Mt Mee ANZACs book, which was launched last month, was funded by a Queensland ANZAC Centenary Grant.

E

nvironmentally savvy kindy kids are doing their bit for the planet. The green initiatives of children at Little Genesis Early Learning Centre at Bray Park have taken out top honours in Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Regional Recycler Awards. Each day, Little Genesis ‘Green Team’ members collect items around the kindergarten for recycling and compost. Students have also been learning to make their own paper and grow their own veggies, which they can take home. Little Genesis Early Learning Director Annette West said the Regional Recycler Award reflected students’ enthusiasm for preserving the environment. “Our (childcare) community looks after more than 144 children each week… and it’s important that we strive to instil good values like recycling and treasuring our local ecosystems,” Ms West said. The young recyclers won a $2500 prize and a trophy made from recycled items. Samford Community Kindergarten has received a $500 grant to purchase an Australian native stingless bee hive as part

former policeman and private investigator turned author has now published a collection of his crime fiction. Peter Wise, pictured, has released Sage’s Saga, a collection of stories featuring his enduring literary creation, an elderly private eye named Peter Sage. A book in three parts, Sage’s Saga compiles the story Death in Famagusta with other two previously released works, The Mt Mee Murders (2008) and The Kimberley Killers (2010). Death in Famagusta, previously released in 2009 as The Body, starts with two Austrian majors found murdered just outside an area on the island of Cyprus controlled by the Turks. An Australian chief inspector and a Canadian military police major, in charge of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces, are assigned to investigate the killings. Death in Famagusta is partly based on the author’s travels as a policeman, including being stationed in Cyprus. The Mt Mee Murders and The Kimberley Killers are murder mysteries set in Queensland and Western Australia, respectively. Mr Wise’s previous book, Bushranger’s Curse, was published last year. The Mt Mee retiree has also released Palomino Gold (2011), about Australian bushrangers attempting to steal gold from Chinese prospectors. Sage’s Saga is available for $32.95 from Zeus Publications. SUEZ’s grant also allowed Highvale bee expert Bob “Bee Man” Lutteral to visit the kindergarten and talk to children about the importance of bees to the environment.

Under the guise of his alterego Flacco, Paul Livingston joined Tim Ferguson, Paul McDermott and Richard Fidler and their anarchic comedy incarnation – the Doug Anthony All-Stars (D.A.A.S.) – on television and on stage in front of sell-out crowds across Australia. Local movie Project to go global

A

new science-fiction feature film partly financed by a Samford couple and featuring stars from Stargate, Dark Matter and Battlestar Galactica is set to be completed this week – before possible worldwide distribution. Project Eden: Vol 1 tells the story of a woman who becomes a fugitive after discovering that her son’s catatonic state may be at the heart of a global conspiracy. It stars Mike Dopud (Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, Dark Matter), Cliff Simon (Stargate: Continuum, Stargate SG-1), Erick Avari (The Mummy, Mr Deeds), Emily Fradenburgh (Nothing Without You), and Australia’s Paul O’Brien (Logie winner for Home and Away) and Anna McGahon (House Husbands, 100 Bloody Acres). “The inspiration for Project Eden was to tell a story that hadn’t been told before, a story that would be both unique yet entertaining,” the film’s co-director Terrance Young said. “The main character and both the beginning and end of the story was there from the beginning over ten years ago.” Project Eden: Vol 1 is produced by Mad Anth’m, a collaboration of creative talent from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. It is written and directed by Young and Ashlee Jensen, whose debut feature film 500 Miles, made for a five-figure sum, won a

Cincinnati Film Festival award and had international distribution. “500 Miles was made on a shoestring budget… (yet) managed to win multiple awards internationally and was released on DVD and video-on-demand worldwide,” Young said. “(It) allowed us to step into Project Eden at a much higher budget of over a million dollars. “The experience of directing this film together was exhilarating, stressful yet rewarding.” The official teaser trailer for Project Eden: Vol 1, a film shot on New Zealand’s north island, in Minnesota, USA and in south-east Queensland, had more than 25,000 views online in 24 hours. The film’s Samford-based Executive Producer and financier, who wished to remain anonymous, has high hopes for the film which is being described as a ‘science-fiction conspiracy thriller’. “It’s got a bit of a broad spectrum of people who are going to be attracted to it and going to find it appealing,” they said. “We’re hoping that we crack a Sundance (Film Festival) invitation.” Young said Project Eden: Vol 1’s producers had “already secured a pre-sale in China” for the film, scheduled for release in 2017. Sean in jazzy frame of mind

“I tried to write some music that would really work for them, and also give space to each voice in the band,” Foran said. Branching out from Trichotomy’s pianobass-drums format offered Foran “great scope for how I played”. “One of the best things was that my part on piano could shift around. There were many options for melodic presentation and harmony parts,” he said. “I also just really love the combination of sounds. The overall group texture is really nice, I think.” Trichotomy, which features Arana Hills’ John Parker on drums, will release new album Known-Unknown in February with a tour of Norway, Estonia, Poland and UK.

T

he saying “idle hands are the devil’s workshop” could never apply to Sean Foran. The award-winning jazz pianist/composer has just released his second solo album, and the new release from his acclaimed trio Trichotomy is on the way. Foran says there was a “certain intensity” recording new solo album Frame of Reference, his 11th studio album in 13 years, over two days in a London studio. “Two days was not long (to record), and there was no chance to redo,” he said. “The (recording) session was the first time the band had played together at all, and for some, the first time we had met. “I think that gives a sense of energy to the music... and as we’re all playing the songs for the first time, it sounds quite spontaneous.” Julian Argüelles (saxophone), Ben Davis

Ferny Hills jazz pianist Sean Foran has released his new solo album.

(cello), Stuart McCallum (guitar) and Joost Hendrickx (drums) played on the album’s eight songs, which Foran wrote in France.

Georgie girl wonder

G

eorgie Barber is showing the older kids how it’s done on horseback. Last month the nine-year-old won the junior division of the South Burnett Endurance Riders Association event held at Nanango, for riders 17 years and under. The Dayboro Pony Club member was the youngest rider to complete the 80km ride, finishing the course in a time of 6 hours and 24 minutes. Over the past 12 months, Georgie has done ten endurance horse riding races, on three different horses. “The best one yet was winning my first 80km (ride) on Shanti,” she said. “It was her first 80km ride and my second time to complete the distance.” The Dayboro resident has been riding horses since she was two and competed in her first equestrian competition at the age of four. She enjoys “riding in new places and sometimes at night” in endurance races with her horses Shanti, Bandit and Concerto, a “young endurance horse in training”. “The best things about endurance riding is spending lots of time with my horse, riding and looking after her,” Georgie said. As well as “following the direction of the markers to stay on the right track” during an endurance race, Georgie said riders need to feed and water their horses, and also check their mount’s heart rate. The riders must also “work as a team with your horse and strappers” to pass veterinary checks during competition.

Nine-year-old Georgie Barber from Dayboro is making her mark in the field of endurance horse riding. Photo by Sarah Sullivan Photography.

Georgie enjoys endurance racing’s “friendly and encouraging people”, horse riding trips with her family, and training with her mother, Virginia Barber. On horseback, Georgie has also competed in show jumping and gymkhanas as well as penning, camp drafting, hunter trials and hoof ball events. “There is a lot of difference in doing each different style (of event),” she said. “Different gear is needed for each and different training is needed and different (horse) diets too.”

ean Cane was “not really expecting anythingâ€? when the starter’s pistol went off for his ďŹ rst ITU Cross Triathlon World Championship race. Now the Warner resident has reset his goals after winning a silver medal at his maiden international event. The 17-year-old placed second in the elite junior male class of the world titles for offroad triathlon, held at Lake Crackenback in New South Wales last month. “I was going into world champs just to get some international experience, not really expecting anything,â€? the Genesis Christian College student said. “I just wanted to have a good race and to have such a good result like that at this level was just unbelievable.â€? rider, Cane said a strong leg on two wheels – and racing at a home venue – contributed to his silver medal success. “Coming out of the water (after the swim leg) I knew that I needed to start chasing straight away and getting on to the bike I felt really strong,â€? he said. “That really worked to my advantage and I gained a lot of ground and saved a lot of energy for that run. “Having it (the race) so close to home was awesome; no jetlag to overcome and the travel was a lot shorter and we were a lot better with the climate and the temperatures.â€? Cashmere’s Callum Kingston led after the ďŹ rst leg of the race, comprising a 500m lake swim, 12km mountain bike ride and 3.3km bush run, and ďŹ nished 10th. Mt Samson’s Max Neumann won a silver medal in the under-23 men’s division. “I had this race in the back of my mind for over 12 months,â€? the 21-year-old said. “It was my last race of the season and also my biggest, so I was prepared to do what it took to win. “I have done the course many times before and I made sure I knew every bump and turn by arriving in the Snowy Mountains a week early to train on the course.â€? Neumann came within 34 seconds of taking the gold medal from South African Brad Edwards. “Initially after placing second, I was quite disappointed but I soon realised that second at a world champs representing Australia was something to be proud of,â€? Neumann said.
