Welcome! Dear Parents, Welcome to another great year of Westminster Summer Camp! We have some exciting new camps for your campers to try, along with our “tried and true” favorites to attend again. See the next page for a listing of our new camps. We have listened to your feedback and are pleased to offer one-week sessions for some of our favorite two-week camps. This will give your family greater flexibility as you work around other summer commitments. For returning campers, please make sure health forms are up to date in CampMinder and all information is still correct. If you are new to Westminster camps, welcome! Please upload your child’s immunization form and a photo of your child and complete the health history section so we can best serve you this summer. I hope your child’s summer experience is safe, rewarding, and fun! If you ever need to discuss anything with me, please feel free to call me at any time, or leave a message on the camp phone at 404-367-7868. Sincerely, Kelley Day

SPECIALTY CAMPS Counselor-in-Training

Engineering

Designed for rising 9th and 10th grade students who have not yet turned 16, this camp is an excellent introduction to camp counselor duties. Two CIT campers are admitted per week and will rotate between Sports Camp, Summer Day Camp, Cubby Camp, Camp WIldcats, and a specialty camp each day. While the CIT camp does not guarantee a counselor position in future years, it will help the camper determine where their interests lie. Admitting only two CIT campers per week allows a high level of leadership development and interaction with camp directors.

Campers put their engineering skills to the test through daily challenges. The campers have fun by learning to build prototypes, testing and modifying their prototypes, and competing in such challenges as building the tallest structure, building the strongest weight-bearing structure, and building the strongest weight-bearing bridge using only index cards and one foot of scotch tape.

Robotics

Campers have the opportunity to learn and practice math skills through real-world problem-solving techniques. Campers are constantly challenged to solve unusual problems and invent their own in a relaxing and supportive setting.

Robotics is offered to children, both beginners and experts, entering grades 3-8. Campers work in teams of two to three, based on their age and level of experience. Campers have the option to use a blueprint to build a standard robot or design their own stable robot. Campers in grades 6-8 experience the VEX robotics system for the first time. VEX is a technical platform that involves building robots using aluminum and steel parts, including wheels, gears and motors. Students will also learn to use a dynamic, non-graphical programming language, ROBOTC, to program their robot for autonomous movement.

At the end of camp, kids will have a complete, fully functional game they can play and share with friends. They will also be able to access the online version of the course after camp, including video tutorials, interactive quizzes, and new challenges. As kids code new features in their game, they learn the most important concepts in programming, including if-then and conditional statements, logical operators, variables, methods, parameters, object types, and loops. They also learn the fundamental techniques of game design, such as navigating and operating within a three-dimensional environment, utilizing prefabs, generating custom particles, simulating artificial intelligence, and more.
