Dalrymple Meets with BNSF CEO to Discuss Rail Safety BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. Jack Dalrymple today met with Matt Rose, CEO and Chairman of BNSF Railway, to discuss the Dec. 30 train derailment and fire near Casselton and ways to enhance rail safety, particularly the shipment of North Dakota crude oil. Dalrymple and Rose met for about an hour today at BNSF headquarters in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Dalrymple told Rose that state officials will continue working with the state’s Congressional Delegation, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and other federal agencies to enhance rail safety.

“I wanted to ask BNSF more questions about the operation of trains that carry oil, their safety measures and about the tank cars used to ship North Dakota crude oil,” Dalrymple said. “We’re going to pursue this until we’re satisfied that the appropriate measures are in place for maximum public safety.”

The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation into the cause of the Dec. 30 train derailment and fire about a half-mile west of Casselton. Initial reports indicate that a westbound train carrying grain derailed shortly after 2p.m., sending grain cars onto an adjacent set of tracks. Soon after, an eastbound train on the neighboring tracks collided with derailed grain cars in its path, causing a larger derailment and a large fire with several explosions. No injuries have been reported.

Dalrymple said the railroad industry needs to review its emergency communication systems to safeguard against accidents similar to what occurred near Casselton. The governor also asked Rose about BNSF’s operational protocols involving trains passing one another through populated areas while carrying hazardous materials.

The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources has collected data on the physical properties of Bakken crude oil and will provide any needed assistance to PHMSA which is studying the relative volatility of oil produced in western North Dakota. PHMSA also is in the process of developing new rules regarding rail car tanker standards, Dalrymple said.

Column Jim Mullen The Village idiot Thos Kids Today!

We’ve all heard the stories about kids today and their addiction to cellphones, and how it’s not like it was when we were kids -- as if something else is like it was. But cellphones and games come in for special abuse, and I have to admit, I have jumped on the “Woe is me, cellphones (or computer games or piercings or tattoos or whatever) will be the ruin of us all” bandwagon many, many times.

So I was impressed to hear from a friend about a young teenage girl who went to a party and decided that she was missing too much of her life by being on her cell all the time. So she turned off her phone, put it in her coat pocket and threw it on the bed with all the other coats.

When it was time to leave, she grabbed her coat and drove home. She didn’t even remember to fish her phone out of her pocket; she was just thinking of what a good time she’d had. It didn’t occur to her that leaving her phone in her pocket might have been the reason she’d had so much fun, and maybe it wouldn’t have made any difference, who knows? She had a wonderful time, caught up She simply felt warm and happy and at with all her friends without ever once peace with the world. Maybe it was my fault, maybe I raised you wrong, maybe I just thought I was leading by example. Well, whatever it is, I can see it didn’t take. “I called your grandmother and your Uncle Art and Aunt Helen and they’re all in an uproar. What will I text them now? Is My Dog A Pot Dog?

Alison Rosen

The new year started in a bit of a panic when, after his evening walk, my dog began throwing up and then flopped over on his side. I called him into the other room because I wanted to see him move. He popped up, trotted about 10 feet and then stood there looking at me. I was relieved for about a second, but then he began wobbling and sat, as if to steady himself. His head was shaking back and forth a little. Then he began throwing up again. In between heaves he was twitchy -- not sure where twitching ends and convulsing begins but it seemed to my fiance and me that he was on the border. Definitely south of seizure but north of twitching. Here is the thing about my dog. He is the cutest, sweetest most adorable dog in the entire universe and if anything happens to him, I will die. For this reason, I’m sure something is going to happen to him. It’s just science. So, convinced something awful was happening, we scooped up the little guy, debated whether to put him in his car carrier or in my lap -- I finally decided on the carrier for fear that if he was in my lap he would sense and feed off my anxiety, again, just science -- jumped in the car and drove to the vet. I spent the entire car ride swiveled around staring into the metal grate of the pet carrier that was strapped into the back seat. Oliver was reclining against the towel in a way I’d never seen. He was flopped on his side and his head was leaning on the towel not unlike a drunk passed out near a toilet. I was semi-convinced we were going to lose him on the way to the vet, and it was a small victory every time he held his head up.

North Dakota’s First Fuddruckers 5517 Hwy 85, Williston, ND

Oliver was a runt -- two ounces when he was born and hand fed because his mother was a whore. Actually, that’s not true. I’m not sure what her deal was, but I know she had better things to do than nurse him so he was saved and raised by humans. He is a third the size he’s supposed to be -- he’s a six and a half pound Cavalier King Charles Spaniel -- and he’s always skinny no matter how much he eats, the lucky bastard.

ried there’s something wrong with him despite being assured from the outset that runts often have a will to live that makes them healthier than their siblings. When we got to the vet, the nurse took his vitals and told us he was stable. She said the vet was going to examine him and then would be in to see us. We could have a seat in a tiny room filled with posters about heartworm and cat toxins. After what felt like a lifetime but was probably only half an hour, still a long time when you’re panicking, the vet came into the little room and asked if Oliver could have gotten into anything and said he seemed like a “pot dog.” Was the vet accusing us of being stoners who leave our pot around the house? I was both offended and kind of happy that I give off a libertine vibe but I explained that there’s no pot in our house. The vet asked if Oliver might have found a joint on the walk. We admitted that he does put everything in his mouth when he’s walking. The vet listed the things that could make him act this way -- pot, nicotine (a cigarette butt or nicotine gum), Vicodin, Xanax, alcohol or licking antifreeze. He brought Oliver in so we could see him. He was unsteady on his feet and seemed disoriented. He couldn’t walk in a straight line and seemed to only sort of recognize me. “He seems drunk,” said the vet. On the vet’s recommendation, we left him over night while they followed a protocol for toxin ingestion -activated charcoal and IV fluids. The following day we picked him up and he was himself again. If he had any realizations about himself, his place in the universe and the way we’re all one while he was tripping, he hasn’t shared them with me. At this point I view all gum as nicotine gum, which is what I suspect may have been the culprit. Sure enough, during his first walk back in the neighborhood, he tried to put gum in his mouth. He’s an addict.

But because he’s a runt, I’m always wor-

Dalrymple, Hoeven, Cramer Meet in Casselton with NTSB and Local Officials BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. Jack Dalrymple, U.S. Sen. John Hoeven and Congressman Kevin Cramer met today with officials from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to discuss Monday’s train derailment and fire near Casselton. Dalrymple, Hoeven and Cramer met with NTSB officials at the Central Cass School in Casselton which is serving as the tactical operations center for emergency responders. Following their meeting with the NTSB, Dalrymple, Hoeven and Cramer also met with local and state officials who are carrying out the emergency response following the train derailment.

line and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) asking her to finalize such rules as soon as possible. To date, no rules have been completed, but he said he will continue to work with others to press the case. Hoeven also said it must be recognized that modern pipelines, with their new safety features, are an important part of enhancing the safety of petroleum transport, which is why he has been working aggressively to build projects like the Keystone XL pipeline.

“We welcome the NTSB’s investigation and hope that it will serve to improve rail safety,” Dalrymple said. “We are also committed to providing all of the state resources needed in this emergency response.” Dalrymple, Hoeven and Cramer said they will monitor the NTSB’s investigation and will continue to work with local officials to ensure they have the resources needed to safeguard the public. Hoeven and Dalrymple spoke today to the CEO of BNSF Railway to express their concern about yesterday’s accident in Casselton and to expedite ways that we can improve rail transportation safety. Hoeven also spoke with the chairman of the NTSB. “We need to see what the NTSB’s recommendations are, but right now, we need to rigorously review which products can be shipped in which railcars for maximum safety until newer cars come online,” Hoeven said. “We also need to advance rules for building new tankers with enhanced safety features.” A year ago, Hoeven wrote to the head of the Pipe-

In response to the derailment, the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services activated the State Emergency Operations Center to assist local emergency response efforts. The North Dakota Department of Health dispatched personnel to the accident site Monday and Health Department staff remained on site today to oversee the monitoring of air quality and to conduct a preliminary assessment of potential environmental impacts. The Highway Patrol and state Department of Transportation also have assisted local emergency responders. “The National Transportation Safety Board, and various other federal agencies, state, and local officials are all currently on the ground conducting an investigation to determine exactly what led to the unfortunate accident near Casselton,” said Sen. Heidi Heitkamp. “I’m remaining in close contact with state and local officials, as well as BNSF and NTSB, to make sure the necessary resources are in place to provide for the safety of the citizens of Casselton and to make sure there’s a quick and safe clean up of the accident site.”

“After meeting with federal, state, and local officials today I am continuing to monitor the situation, Congressman Cramer said. “ It is a blessing no loss of life was suffered. Ensuring the well-being of local residents remains the number one priority” Initial reports indicate that a westbound train carrying grain derailed shortly after 2p.m. Monday about a half-mile west of Casselton. The derailed train crashed into an eastbound train carrying crude oil, causing a large fire and several explosions. No injuries have been reported. Many of Casselton’s resi-

Is America Going To POT?

One certain result of the legalization of marijuana is that there are going to be more potheads, more dropouts, and more deaths on highways from those high or stoned -- and more rehab centers.

Scores of thousands of Coloradans may relish the freedom they have voted for themselves. But the costs will be borne by society and the families of future victims of potheads behind the wheel. So it has been with alcohol. All of us can recall classmates injured and dead in auto accidents, jobs lost by friends, lives destroyed, and families smashed because of booze. Just as beer opens the door for the young to bourbon, scotch, gin and vodka, marijuana is the gateway drug, the escalator drug, to cocaine and heroin. And if marijuana sales bring in the revenue Colorado envisions, other states will follow suit, and some state will become the first to decriminalize cocaine. Undeniably, the cultural revolution is gaining converts and picking up speed. The haste with which some Republicans are deep-sixing the social issues to focus on tax cuts testifies to this.

And while a libertarianism of the left appears ascendant, there is also a rising and militant libertarianism of the right. We have seen it manifest in the explosion of “stand your ground” and concealed-carry laws, opposition to federal background checks for gun owners, and ferocious resistance to the outlawing of assault rifles and 30-round magazines.

Bowtie brand models in U.S. and Canada to get OnStar 4G LTE by summer

LAS VEGAS – Starting this summer, Chevrolet will have some of the fastest vehicles on the roads, and that has nothing to do with horsepower. Chevrolet drivers will be enjoying high-speed data - made possible by a new OnStar 4G LTE connection in the vehicle, running on AT&T’s network, the nation’s fastest and most reliable 4G LTE network. Chevrolet today announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette, Impala, Malibu, and Volt would be the first General Motors’ vehicles to come optionally equipped with OnStar 4G LTE. They will be followed by the Equinox, Silverado, Silverado HD, Spark and Spark EV. In the Canadian market, OnStar with 4G LTE will be introduced on the Chevrolet Trax as well. The majority of the 2015 Chevrolet lineup in the U.S and Canada will have a 4G LTE connection built-in at vehicle launch. More models will be announced later this year. “Chevrolet is expected to implement the broadest deployment of 4G LTE in the automotive industry,” said Alan Batey, senior vice president of Global Chevrolet. “The fact that OnStar with 4G LTE will be available in models that range from the Chevrolet Spark to the Silverado to the Corvette, is indicative of our broad commitment to deliver more value and convenience through smart technology applications. It seems as though you can make steady progress in whatever you put your mind to this week. A focus on a sensitive part of your chart suggests that you may experience a breakthrough in a personal problem by taking the time to discuss it in detail. Along with this, make sure that your relations with key people are on an even keel. Difficulties that remain unresolved could add to your problems. Smoothing the way ahead by being caring and courteous could make things easier for you. As Mars continues to move through your wellness sector, you may be more productive if you can walk in nature or exercise regularly. Maintaining a balanced diet and routine may work wonders for your energy level and well-being. Relationships get off to a good start with opportunities for collaboration, closing deals, romance, plus a chance to make some new acquaintances. Good connections with others may be important in helping you succeed in business or romance.

To avoid any uncomfortable misunderstandings, keep the lines of communication open with those you work or spend time with. This week’s lineup encourages harmonious interaction through discussion at all levels, which may then pave the way for progress. You may feel you have the energy to move mountains midweek, but it might be better to pace yourself for the best outcome. Once Mercury moves into Aquarius, you may be drawn to folks who have an alternative bias, and your social life could be perkier, too. You may feel like taking a relationship to a new level of commitment, especially if it shows signs of having some staying power. However, as Venus continues to rewind, this isn’t the best time to make a major decision concerning the future of a romance or even a business partnership. Things could still change over the coming weeks, so keep your options open for now. Dating and lighthearted evenings out seem to be your best choices. Give yourself plenty of wiggle room!

Matters on the home front may demand a lot of attention. However, you could be in creative mode, too, and thinking about projects that can beautify your place and give it a fresh look for the new year. At the same time you may feel very enthusiastic about making a career move that could expand your horizons or bring you a challenge that you’d really relish. When Mercury moves into Aquarius it’s time to get out and about with fun in mind. Give yourself a break!

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21): If finances are giving you the runaround early on, it might help to stop and find some breathing space. This is one week when a bit of planning or an opportunity to budget for the coming weeks or months might ease anxiety and help you feel in control. However, a racy aspect midweek could encourage you to splurge regardless of the consequences, especially if you’re spending money on having a good time. A little forethought now could save you some angst later.

You may be busy planning ahead or mulling over a complex problem, yet the help and advice of a friend or partner could be the best kind of feedback. Whatever you’re considering, don’t rush into anything just yet, especially if it involves money or relationships. Things may change, and you’ll need to make a new set of decisions. Even though you might feel pressured to resolve an issue or make a move, go with the flow and take things as they come. You can do very well with a bit of creative thinking.

You might have a lot to think about, discuss, and plan for, but you’ll be in your element nevertheless. With Venus still in its retrograde phase, you may not be able to count on other people as much as you’d hoped. It helps to give others as much leeway as possible and not rely on their input too much. The more you can do for yourself, the less hassle you will experience over the days ahead. You’ll need to be patient in romance, too.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18):

As the Sun continues through Capricorn, you may feel like retreating from the world more than ever. It helps to acknowledge this need and take a chance to relax and recharge. Of course, you’ll still be busy with various duties, but stepping back and getting a fresh perspective on your life and relationships can be very productive. This is one time when delegating responsibilities and giving yourself a break could renew your vital energies and help you forge ahead in the weeks to come.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Your social life continues to be busy, with opportunities to take part in community projects and generally mingle with friends and loved ones. As Venus continues to be retrograde, try not to worry too much if a friendship seems to have lost something, or if you and a pal seem more distant than usual. One or both of you may be evaluating the relationship and drawing some conclusions. There are lots more opportunities for fun - go with the flow and enjoy yourself.
