Born on January 31, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu was the youngest daughter of D.K. Onwenu, a notable Nigerian educationist and politician. Her early life was marked by tragedy when she lost her father at the age of four, a loss that influenced her determination and drive. Onwenu pursued her education zealously, attending Wellesley College in Massachusetts, USA, where she earned a degree in International Relations and Communication. She later completed her Master’s degree in Media Studies at The New School for Social Research in New York City.

Onwenu’s career began in journalism, where she worked as a news correspondent for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). Early on in Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, in one of his infamous fourth-wall-breaking quips, the Merc With the Mouth tells the legendary X-Men hero that he’s joining the long-running Marvel Cinematic Universe(MCU) at a bit of a low point. Which, to be honest, is an understatement.
Ever since 2019’s genre-defining finale Avengers: Endgame, Marvel has been trying to re-create that euphoric magic — to little avail. Between the glut of mediocre TV shows and lackluster movies over the past five years, the now-bloated Marvel Cinematic Universe is indeed at its lowest point since the franchise exploded onto the scene with 2008’s Iron Man. But with the savagely hilarious and violently kinetic Deadpool & Wolverine (it’s Marvel’s first R-rated movie for a reason. It really shouldn’t be the last), Marvel has once again caught lightning in a bottle, delivering a cinematic experience on par with the very funniest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There’s not much to say about the plot of Deadpool & Wolverine without giving too much away, but the basics are simple enough (for a franchise that leans heavily into its own multiverse, anyway): It’s set six years after the events of Deadpool 2, and Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) has hung up his Deadpool costume and weapons (so, so many weapons), choosing to live a relatively quiet life with his loved ones. But when the Time Variance Authority, an organisation that monitors the timelines of the multiverse, decides to step in (with Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Paradox leading the charge), it sets into motion a plot that pairs the foul-mouthed, violently destructive former mercenary with the foulmouthed, violently destructive mutant Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). The synergy between them is a match made in Marvel Cinematic Universe heaven, even when they’re beating each other to a bloody pulp. (Yes, Jackman and Reynolds both starred in the

Origins:
Wolverine, but the less said about that movie, the better).
Going into Deadpool & Wolverine, there was a question of whether reviving Jackman’s Wolverine would cheapen 2017’s Logan, the final chapter in the “Wolverine” trilogy and a pitch-perfect send-off for the sacrificial hero. But thanks to timeline shenanigans (this is the MCU after all), Deadpool & Wolverine manages to pay proper tribute to Logan while creating a worthwhile new version of Wolverine just as complex and three-dimensional as the original — angry and quick to unsheathe his adamantium-infused claws, yes, but broken and scarred and just as human as the rest of us.
Deadpool & Wolverine may revel in its eyepopping profanity and flood of unsubtle jokes directed at Marvel and 20th Century Fox (which distributed the previous “Deadpool” movies and was acquired by Marvel-owning Disney in 2019), but the movie truly comes to life when the claws pop out and the bullets start flying. Deadpool & Wolverine has some of the best fight sequences in the MCU since the beautifully choreographed Captain America: Civil War. The fights are gory, kinetic, almost over the top — but they’re also mesmerising to watch as the two protagonists wreak havoc on those in their way (and each other!) as they try to right the wrongs of their past. (It doesn’t hurt that Deadpool & Wolverine has the most ridiculous, crowd-pleasing soundtrack — everything from NSYNC to Madonna — blasting as blood is spilled and bone is broken.)
Yes, Deadpool & Wolverine is mostly irreverent, much like the first two movies.It is also genuinely, laugh-out-loud hilarious. But it doesn’t shy away from the heavier topics: grief, regret, belonging, self-doubt, love. Wade and Logan have experienced great loss in their lives, and the scars show in everything they do.
In the end, Deadpool & Wolverine is the ultimate love letter to Marvel fans: The cameos and references are aplenty and brilliant (the audience at my screening gasped more than once), the source material is treated with respect and, best of all, it’s pure, unadulterated fun. It finally looks like Marvel is back in fighting shape. (P.S. yes, the equally sweet and crude credits are worth sticking around for.)
Throughout the 1990s, courtroom dramas and comedies ruled theatres across the country. They presented a perfect date night activity and were so common that you rarely needed to give it your full attention. The best of these movies, The Pelican Brief, My Cousin Vinny, and The Firm, became iconic in their own right. Presumed Innocent returns to our lives in a very different era than its last adaptation. Now, the courtroom stories have shifted to television, where Jury Duty, American Crime Story, and Big Little Lies now live Presumed Innocent proves David E. Kelley’s prowess once more and concludes with thunderous applause.
Presumed Innocent, based on the novel by Scott Turow, follows the murder of Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve). She worked for the Chicago district attorney, so when police are called to the scene, her colleagues are responsible for finding the killer. Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal) gets the first crack at the case. However, Rusty gets replaced on the case after he cannot find the killer, and a local election pushes out his ally Raymond Horgan (Bill Camp). Soon, Tommy Molto (Peter Sarsgaard) puts together pieces that Rusty and Carolyn conducted an extramarital affair. Rusty becomes suspect number one, and as the evidence builds, Molto has him arrested for Carolyn’s murder.
Once again, the story is primarily told from Rusty’s point of view, but as the case develops, Kelley ensures that we cannot trust him. Tacking on additional ideas and subplots, Kelley wisely wrings every ounce of drama from the events. For fans of the original book and movie, there are subtle hints and nods towards the well-known finale. Yet, at the same time, there are moments that dissuade the audience from that idea, instead pushing us toward a different ending. Whether you can expect the same ending will not be answered in this review, and Kelley keeps you in suspense throughout.
Additionally, Kelley’s prowess in the genre allows him to effectively play the best versions of every trope. The defense attorney comes out of retirement for one last case. The defendant takes the stand. The prosecutor’s personal grudges get in the way of his ability to see things clearly. The judge gets to infuse enough of their personality into the case. It’s like drinking warm
soup on a cold day, and Presumed Innocent thrives when it overperforms in every aspect of this story.
It’s rare to see the best take on projects so in their wheelhouse, but Kelley assembles an all-star cast for his series. Gyllenhaal arrives ready to get painted as a dirtbag and leans on all his charisma throughout the series. It’s arguably the best use of his movie-star status in some time, and he makes for an incredible “Love to Hate” character. The only actor more in their wheelhouse is Sarsgaard, who blows everyone away with his smarmy performance. The two make for incredible foes throughout the series. With news of a second season in production, one cannot help but grow excited for one (or both) to return in the future.
However Ruth Negga as Rusty’s wife, Barbara, steals the show. She delivers a powerful foil to Rusty as she tries to save the marriage time and
time again. Presumed Innocent gets incredible mileage over their disputes with each other. However, in the quiet moments, she brings so much pathos and gravitas to the show that you cannot help but root for her. Her performance, especially in the finale, raises Presumed Innocent to incredible highs.
Reinsve shows incredible range in her few scenes. She continues to showcase incredible ability and range in every role. Camp brings his usual brilliance to Presumed Innocent, and pairing him with his real-life wife, Elizabeth Marvel, adds an incredible element to his story. O-T Fagbenle takes a giant performative swing that works through most of the show but certainly frustrates some.
The only problem facing Presumed Innocent stems from its length. Even with most episodes falling under fifty minutes, eight episodes is still too many. At times, the story burrows into ideas that do not ultimately matter for the show. It’s fine to have misdirected, but these felt strenuous, even in this context. However, it’s also just fun to watch Kelley work his magic. Television allows for comfort watches in ways movies cannot always replicate. Presumed Innocent thrives with its stellar cast and top-notch writing. In many ways, it’s one of the best shows of 2024. It rarely reaches true highs, but it never dips in quality over the eight episodes. Frankly, that’s a huge win for audiences.
