ONAKOYA BIMPE
EDITOR’S NOTE
Bimpe Onakoya was intrigued with makeup from a young age. In the early nineties, after secondary school, she started paying attention to magazines and watching music videos of Tony Braxton, Whitney Houston and others. Her inspiration to pursue a career in makeup artistry came from her fascination with the transformative power of makeup and how it can enhance a person’s features. Onakoya says it was a new world for her, and she wanted to be part of it, so she kept practising with her friends. It got easier when she became a makeup apprentice and watched makeup tutorials online. Seeing the artists online create stunning looks sparked her creativity, and she realised that makeup artistry wasn’t just a tool but an art form. As with every business, Bimpe faced challenges early on in her career, and one of the most significant was getting people to realise that makeup artistry had become a business for her.
Bimpe Onakoya’s story is very interesting. I urge you to scroll through pages 8 to 10.

6 Statement Pieces to Invest in FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
It’s time to go out in style now that the holiday season is here! Regardless of whether you’re attending family gettogethers, holiday get-togethers, or glamorous events, your attire should stand out. Now is the ideal moment to invest in essential fashion items that will enhance your appearance and guarantee that you stand out wherever you go. The good news? It is not necessary to have dozens of items in your closet; a few carefully selected pieces will do the trick. You should consider investing in these six statement pieces for this festive season.
1.
DRESS
There is nothing more “festive” than a glittering, shiny outfit. A sparkly outfit is a show-stopper for nighttime gatherings or New Year’s Eve festivities. Go for ones with eye-catching shimmering highlights, metallic materials, or sequins. They are worth investing in because they are timeless classics always in style, especially around the holidays. To keep the dress the main attraction, pair it with neutral accessories. For example, nude heels and a basic clutch purse can counterbalance the boldness.
2. A SPARKLY
BOLD JEWELLERY
Any ensemble can be transformed with the help of jewellery. Invest in statement earrings, layered bracelets, or big necklaces this season. Look out for designs including unusual shapes, vibrant gemstones, or even holiday-themed elements like snowflakes and stars. Vibrant jewellery is adaptable and goes well in both professional and informal settings. Allow one piece to be the focal point of your styling. For instance, wear a plain necklace, or don’t wear any at all if you wear statement earrings.
3.
4. A LUXE VELVET BLAZER STATEMENT SHOES
Whether you wear it with a dress or just a basic top and pants, a velvet blazer can quickly make you look put together and stylish. This adaptable piece is appropriate for various settings, including dinners and office celebrations. Choose eyecatching hues like navy blue, emerald green, or deep red for a more festive look.
Your shoes may make or ruin your ensemble; therefore, they should be the focal point of your holiday ensemble. Invest in boots or heels with striking patterns, metallic finishes, or rhinestones as embellishments. Shoes are a useful yet fashionable element in any wardrobe, and they can make even the most basic ensembles look better. Keep the rest of your outfit simple if your shoes are bold to avoid clashing. For example, consider wearing a sleek black dress with glittering heels.
6.
CLUTCH BAG
Instead of carrying your regular purse, get a stylish clutch bag that goes well with your holiday attire. Choose one that has striking colours, metallic textures, or embellishments. It’s the ideal piece to contain your essentials and add some glitz. A clutch is a necessary holiday item because it is small yet powerful. For added versatility, choose a clutch with a chain strap that can be removed so you may wear it over your shoulder or carry it as a clutch.
5.
The weather shouldn’t stop you from looking chic! Invest in festive outwear, such as a fitted wool coat, a cape, or a faux fur coat. These pieces create a statement in addition to keeping you warm. Since people first see outerwear, investing in something distinctive is worthwhile. Instead of wearing your coat fully, wrap it over your shoulders for a touch of style.
CONCLUSION
Invest in these eyecatching pieces to let your style speak volumes during this festive season. You will feel and look like the star of the party with the perfect glittery dress, striking jewellery, velvet jacket, statement shoes, and stylish clutch. Keep in mind that you don’t have to spend a fortune; instead, concentrate on high-quality items that can be worn again and styled in different ways for other occasions. Everywhere you go, people will notice you thanks to these investments. Compliments of the season!
We’re nearing the end of uncovering #Unshakable truths hidden in the alphabet, and today, we focus on the letter R: R is for retirement.
First, a quick throwback. Last week’s column featured a cat that inherited an entire estate, sparking drama and leaving many of you wondering how it all ended. While I will keep you guessing for now, this week’s story revolves around a chicken — and, of course, the concept of preparing for the future.
R IS FOR RETIREMENT
Because we MUST Think About Our Future!
Today, she is retired, and I can confidently say she has earned every ounce of her current peace and freedom.
Now, she divides her time between the UK and Nigeria, living the life she once dreamed of and prayed for. In the UK, her days are filled with doting on her six-and-a-half grandchildren (the “half” referring to one still on the way), engaging in charity work, and spending quality time with friends and family. When she’s in Oba, she turns her focus to growing crops, tending to her poultry, and dedicating her time to the village children. She gathers these kids to introduce them to books, toys, and opportunities that are not part of their standard school curriculum.
We all have dreams of what life might look like down the road. While destiny unfolds in its own mysterious way, it’s fair to say that a bit of luck combined with focused preparation can nudge fate in the right direction. My inspiration for this week’s column is my mama —fondly dubbed the Queen of Oba (a town in Anambra State, Nigeria).
Mama was born in the UK but spent much of her childhood in Nigeria. Later, she made a bold decision to leave everything familiar to return to the UK, ensuring I could navigate university life as a young adult. Her journey was far from easy, but it paved the way for a fulfilling career spanning over 25 years. Mama became a respected expert in special needs education, building a legacy that’s as inspiring as it is #unshakable.
It is here, in her village life, that the story of the chickens comes to life.
Among Mama’s feathered companions was a guinea fowl named Brexit. True to his name, he was a flight risk, often escaping in search of adventure. His escapades left his frazzled wife behind, noisily protesting his absence. Then, there was Captain Jarvis, the lead cockerel who bravely gave his life battling a snake. His untimely demise led to the rise of Captain Jarvis Junior (CJJ), a young cockerel who inherited the responsibility of leading the flock.
CJJ, however, had some quirks. Unlike his predecessor, who crowed at the break of dawn, CJJ was known to crow at odd hours—sometimes late at night or in the middle of the day. Mama, ever patient, excused his behaviour, saying his father’s early death likely left little time for proper training.
One stormy morning, Mama woke up to silence and worried that CJJ had been swept away by the storm. At 7 a.m., the family WhatsApp group buzzed with a triumphant “Hurrah!”—CJJ had crowed, signalling that all was well with the world once more.
As I read her message, I couldn’t help but reflect on the stark contrast between her life and mine. While she savoured her retirement, worrying about her chickens and gardening, I was neck-deep in the chaos of a 9-to-5 job, juggling mortgage payments, energy bills, and raising my own children. I teasingly replied, “Lucky you! Some of us are stuck worrying about soaring mortgage interest rates!”
But beneath the humour, I was struck by the enormity of what Mama had accomplished. Her #unshakable resilience, sacrifices, and hard work had given her the freedom to live a life of her choosing. She had earned the right to decide where to wake up each day, to dedicate her time to village children, and yes, even to fuss over chickens.
Today, Captain Jarvis Junior thrives, the village kids are gaining access to life - changing opportunities, and the UK remains a comfortable home for her in parallel. Mama’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of planning and working toward a future that aligns with our dreams. Retirement is not just about an end — it’s about creating a new chapter, one where your hard work and sacrifices bloom into the life you always imagined.
So, I ask you: What does your retirement plan look like? How are you ensuring that your later years are filled with purpose, comfort, and joy?
Retirement may feel like a distant dream, but the steps we take today can make all the difference. While destiny plays its role, a little planning and effort can nudge fortune in our favour, paving the way for a life of #unshakable peace and fulfilment.
Until next week — take care, and start thinking about the future you want to create.
LEADING NIGERIA’S MAKEUP SCENE BIMPE ONAKOYA
Over the years, Nigeria’s makeup industry has expanded rapidly, going from a basic beauty service to a developed sector. This progress was made through a lot of effort from pioneers who continuously developed and improved the craft. Through their inventiveness and commitment, they have made a lasting impression on the international scene and elevated Nigerian makeup artistry beyond national boundaries. Because of the pioneers who set the groundwork, the sector now functions as a thriving ecosystem that combines cultural diversity with modern trends.
One of these pioneers is the well-known Nigerian beauty icon Bimpe Onakoya. She graduated from the University of Lagos, where she started her career in makeup by giving students free makeovers. Her passion and skill developed over time, and she eventually established Elite Beauty Pro, a company where she provides beauty services to individuals and organisations. She is the Artistic Director for Maybelline NY Nigeria. Bimpe has had a huge impact on the industry throughout her long career, motivating many aspiring artists with her achievements, such as being the first makeup artist from Africa to work at New York Fashion Week.
In this interview with THEWILL DOWNTOWN’s Dorcas Akintoye, Bimpe Onakoya discusses her journey to becoming a makeup icon, her work with Maybelline Nigeria, the vision behind Elite Makeup Pro, and her thoughts on the evolving beauty landscape in Nigeria.
What initially inspired you to pursue a career in makeup artistry?
My initial inspiration to pursue a career in makeup artistry came from my fascination with the transformative power of makeup and the way it can enhance a person’s features and express individuality. In the early nineties, after my secondary school education, I started paying keen attention to magazines like Ebony and kept watching musical videos of Tony Braxton, Whitney Houston, etc, with my attention solely focused on their makeup and hair. It was a new world for me, almost like Alice in Makeup Land; I wanted to be part of that world so badly. From OAU Ife to Unilag, I kept practising with my friends, and it got easier when I became a makeup apprentice; watching makeup tutorials online and seeing how artists could create stunning looks sparked my creativity and made me realise that makeup is not just a tool, but an art form. Additionally, I was inspired by the confidence that makeup can bring to people. I loved the idea of helping others feel beautiful and empowered, whether for special occasions or everyday life. This combination of creativity and the ability to uplift others truly motivated me to embark on this journey in makeup artistry.
What was it like being the first African-based makeup artist at New York Fashion Week?
Being the first African-based makeup artist at New York Fashion Week was a truly groundbreaking moment for me. It felt like stepping onto a global stage where I could not only showcase my skills but also share the rich beauty traditions of my culture. There was a mix of excitement and pressure, knowing that I was representing not just myself but also countless talented artists back home and also my brand that trusted absolutely. The experience allowed me to connect with artists and models from diverse backgrounds, fostering a collaborative environment that celebrated creativity. Additionally, the support from fellow artists was invaluable. Many reached out to encourage me, and I felt a sense of camaraderie that transcended borders. This experience not only solidified my passion for makeup artistry but also motivated me to advocate for more African representation in fashion. It became clear that my presence at such a prestigious event was not just about me; it was about inspiring the next generation of artists and proving that talent knows no geographical boundaries. Overall, it was a pivotal moment in my career that I will always cherish.
How has working with renowned designers and celebrities impacted your artistic vision?
Working with renowned designers and celebrities has profoundly impacted my artistic vision as a makeup artist. Collaborating with such influential figures exposes me to diverse styles, innovative techniques, and unique perspectives on beauty. Each designer has their aesthetic, which challenges me to think outside the box and adapt my skills to fit their vision, ultimately enhancing my versatility. Interacting with celebrities also provides insight into how makeup can transform not just appearance but also confidence and presence. Seeing how they own their look on the red carpet or during a photoshoot inspires me to push boundaries and experiment with bold choices. This exposure has encouraged me to incorporate more daring colours and unconventional styles into my work, allowing me to develop a signature approach that reflects my style and contemporary trends. Moreover, these experiences have taught me the importance of storytelling through makeup. Each project becomes an opportunity to convey a narrative, whether it’s through a high-fashion editorial or a celebrity’s style. This focus on storytelling has enriched my artistic vision, leading me to create looks that are not only beautiful but also meaningful. Ultimately, working with renowned designers and
celebrities has broadened my horizons, deepening my understanding of the fashion world and shaping my identity as an artist. It has instilled a sense of confidence in my abilities and reinforced my commitment to celebrating diversity and creativity in every makeup look I create.
Can you describe the challenges you faced early on in your career and how you overcame them?
Early in my career as a makeup artist, I faced several challenges that tested my resilience and determination. One of the most significant hurdles was making people understand that I was no longer doing it for fun and that it had become a business for me. They wanted everything free! As a newcomer, securing opportunities and building a portfolio was difficult. To overcome this, I focused on networking and building relationships with local photographers, models, and designers. Collaborating on creative projects helped me showcase my skills and gain visibility. Another challenge was access to high-quality products and resources. In the beginning, I had to make do with limited supplies, which often meant getting creative with what I had. I learned to adapt techniques and experiment with different products to achieve the desired looks. This resourcefulness not only improved my skills but also taught me the importance of innovation in makeup artistry. Additionally, I encountered scepticism about my abilities. Those days, I used to look like a Tom Boy with no makeup on my face, nothing to really show them what I was capable of. I guess God was on my side because somehow, despite it all, they still allowed me to do my thing and most of the time, those sessions always ended well with them being amazed! Lastly, balancing the demands of the job with the need to maintain my unique artistic voice was challenging. In a world that often emphasises commercial appeal, I had to stay true to my vision while meeting client expectations. I learned to communicate effectively with clients, ensuring that my creative input was valued while also being open to collaboration. Through perseverance, networking, and a dedication to honing my craft, I was able to navigate these challenges and carve out a space for myself in the industry. Each obstacle taught me valuable lessons that shaped my journey as an artist, reinforcing my passion for makeup and my commitment to authenticity in my work.
“Early
that celebrates creativity, diversity, and the transformative power of beauty.

As someone who has worked on international projects, how do you bring global beauty trends to your everyday clients?
What has been one of your most fulfilling moments as a makeup artist?
There have been too many moments at different times in my career! When I was signed on as the Artistic Director for Maybelline NY Nigeria, I met and worked with different people from around the world, people like Naomi Campbell, Alek Wek, and so many more. I was the head Artist to two of the biggest fashion weeks in Nigeria and was made a Key Artist at NYFW. There are so many more. I’m just grateful to the God of the universe!
What inspired you to start Elite Makeup Pro, and how has the company evolved over the years?
The inspiration to start Bimpe Elite Makeup Pro came from my own experiences navigating the beauty industry. I saw firsthand how challenging it could be for emerging artists, particularly those from impoverished backgrounds, to access quality training and mentorship. I wanted to create a space where talent could be nurtured and where individuals could learn not only the technical skills required for makeup artistry but also the business acumen necessary for success. My goal was to empower others to pursue their dreams in a supportive and inclusive environment. But currently, that aspect of the business is struggling because of the financial challenges we face today. Ultimately, our mission remains the same: to empower and uplift aspiring makeup artists, fostering a vibrant community
As a makeup artist with experience in international projects, I strive to bring global beauty trends to my everyday clients by adapting them to suit individual styles, preferences, and local contexts. I start by encouraging open communication with my clients about their preferences and comfort levels. This collaborative approach allows me to introduce new trends in a way that feels authentic and aligned with their style. Knowing fully that every client is unique, I tailor global trends to fit their features and preferences. For instance, if a trend emphasises bold colours or unique textures, I consider how these elements can enhance my client’s natural beauty while ensuring they feel comfortable and confident. I also incorporate techniques from international projects into my everyday work. For example, if I learn a specific contouring method or application style that enhances facial features, I can adapt that to various skin types and tones for my clients. I often recommend products that embody global trends while also catering to the needs of my clients. By curating a selection of both local and international brands, I can offer options that reflect trending styles without compromising on quality or suitability. In essence, my goal is to bridge the gap between global beauty trends and the unique preferences of my everyday clients, creating looks that are both fashionable and personally meaningful. This approach not only keeps my artistry fresh and relevant but also ensures that my clients always feel their best.
What are the main responsibilities you handle as Artistic Director for Maybelline Nigeria?
As the Artistic Director for Maybelline Nigeria, my main responsibilities encompass a range of creative and strategic tasks that help shape the brand’s presence in the market. I lead the artistic vision for Maybelline’s campaigns, ensuring that our messaging and visuals resonate with our target audience. This involves conceptualising makeup looks, overseeing photoshoots, and collaborating with photographers, models, and stylists to bring our vision to life. I stay attuned to global beauty trends and consumer preferences, analysing how they can be adapted to the Nigerian market. This helps in developing relevant products and marketing strategies that align with local beauty standards and cultural influences. I assist the product development team in providing insights on new products and formulations that cater to the needs of Nigerian consumers. This includes testing products, providing feedback, and ensuring that they meet the high standards of quality and performance expected from Maybelline. I conduct training sessions for makeup artists and brand ambassadors, sharing techniques and best practices to ensure they represent the brand effectively. This also involves mentoring emerging talent within the beauty community. I oversee the execution of marketing campaigns, ensuring that all elements— from social media to in-store promotions— align with our overall artistic direction. This includes coordinating with various teams to maintain a cohesive brand image. I work to build relationships with beauty influencers, artists, and consumers, fostering a sense of community around the brand. This engagement helps in understanding consumer feedback and adapting our strategies accordingly. I contribute to the overall brand strategy, aligning our artistic goals with business objectives. This involves analysing market performance and adjusting our approach to maximise impact and reach. My role as Artistic Director for Maybelline Nigeria combines creativity, strategy, and community engagement, all aimed at elevating the brand’s presence and ensuring it resonates with a diverse audience. My focus is on celebrating beauty in all its forms while driving innovation and excellence within the brand.
What is the most rewarding aspect of representing Maybelline in Nigeria?
The most rewarding aspect of representing Maybelline in Nigeria is the opportunity to inspire and empower individuals through beauty. Being associated with such a globally recognised brand allows me to connect with a diverse audience and celebrate the unique beauty of Nigerian women. Working with Maybelline allows me to engage with local communities through workshops, events, and collaborations. Sharing knowledge and skills with aspiring makeup artists and beauty enthusiasts is fulfilling, as it helps nurture the next generation of talent in the industry. Overall, representing Maybelline in Nigeria is not just about the products; it’s about making a meaningful impact in people’s lives, promoting diversity, and fostering a community where beauty can be celebrated in all its forms.
How has the makeup industry in Nigeria evolved since you first started?
The makeup industry in Nigeria has undergone significant evolution since I first started, marked by several key developments. Firstly, I would say, increased awareness and education. When I began my career, there was limited access to professional makeup education and resources. Over the years, there has been a surge in beauty schools, workshops, and online tutorials that provide aspiring artists with the skills they need. This has led to a more informed and skilled community of makeup artists. Secondly, I would say the growth of local brands. The rise of local beauty brands has transformed the landscape. Many Nigerian
entrepreneurs have launched makeup lines that cater specifically to the diverse skin tones and preferences of Nigerians, creating products that reflect local culture and beauty standards. This has increased competition and innovation within the industry. Also, the industry has become more inclusive, with brands recognising the importance of catering to a wide range of skin tones. There is now a stronger emphasis on developing products that suit various complexions, which has helped many individuals feel represented and valued. Social media platforms have played a pivotal role in the growth of the makeup industry. Influencers and beauty content creators have emerged, using platforms like Instagram and TikTok to showcase their artistry, share tutorials, and connect with audiences. This has democratised beauty and allowed for the rapid spread of trends and techniques. Nowadays, makeup has become more accepted in everyday life, moving beyond special occasions. Many women now incorporate makeup into their daily routines, driven by the influence of beauty influencers and the desire for self-expression. The industry has seen a rise in professionalism, with makeup artists adopting best practices and higher standards. This includes better hygiene practices, more sophisticated techniques, and an emphasis on client consultation and satisfaction. There is now a greater sense of community among makeup artists, with more opportunities for collaboration and networking. Events, trade shows, and beauty fairs have become platforms for artists to connect, share knowledge, and showcase their work. The Nigerian makeup industry is gaining international recognition, with local artists participating in global beauty events and collaborating with international brands. This exposure has put Nigerian talent on the map and has fostered a sense of pride within the community. The evolution of the makeup industry in Nigeria reflects a broader cultural shift towards embracing beauty, diversity, and selfexpression. It’s an exciting time to be part of this industry, and I’m proud to witness and contribute to its growth.
What changes would you like to see in the Nigerian beauty industry in the next decade?
In the next decade, I would like to see several transformative changes in the Nigerian beauty industry that would further elevate its growth and inclusivity, the establishment of more comprehensive beauty schools and training programs that emphasise both practical skills and business acumen. This would empower aspiring makeup artists with the knowledge they need to thrive in a competitive environment, including courses on marketing, branding, and entrepreneurship. I hope that Nigerian beauty brands gain more visibility and recognition on international platforms. This could involve collaborations with global beauty influencers and participation in international beauty events, showcasing the richness of Nigerian beauty to a wider audience. I envision a beauty industry that celebrates a broader spectrum of beauty standards, embracing all skin tones, body
types, and cultural backgrounds. This includes more diverse representation in advertising, product offerings, and brand narratives, ensuring that everyone feels represented, and I would like to see ongoing innovation in product development specifically tailored to the unique needs of Nigerian consumers. This includes more products designed for the local climate and diverse skin tones. I would also like to see advancements in technology integrated into the beauty industry.
How do you feel about the rising popularity of beauty influencers and their impact on the industry?
The rising popularity of beauty influencers has had a profound and multifaceted impact on the beauty industry, and I view this phenomenon positively for several reasons. Beauty influencers are now playing a crucial role in democratising beauty by making it more accessible. They often share tips, tutorials, and product reviews that empower everyday individuals to experiment with makeup and skincare, regardless of their level of expertise. This shift has encouraged more people to engage with beauty. Many beauty influencers build their brands on authenticity and relatability. Their genuine experiences and recommendations resonate with audiences, creating a sense of trust. This connection often influences purchasing decisions, as consumers feel more aligned with influencers who share their values. I believe that the rising popularity of beauty influencers has enriched the beauty industry in many ways. They have introduced diverse perspectives and created new opportunities for engagement and collaboration. As the industry continues to evolve, it’s essential for both influencers and brands to prioritise authenticity and responsibility, ensuring that the beauty narrative remains inclusive and empowering for all.

BEAUTY EMERGENCIES
5 Quick Fixes For During The Festive Season
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
The holiday season is a time for joy, fun, and taking a ton of photos. Whether for Christmas trips, end-of-year parties, or family gettogethers, now is the time to look your best. A smudged lipstick, frizzy hair, or an unexpected pimple that threatens to embarrass you are examples of beauty emergencies that may happen to anyone at the worst possible time. But don’t panic! You can manage these problems like a pro if you prepare beforehand and know a few temporary solutions. This article will provide five simple beauty tips that can help you look amazing throughout the festive season.
1.
ICE AND CONCEALER FOR FIXING A SUDDEN PIMPLE
On the morning before your big event, imagine yourself waking up to see a pimple in the mirror. Don’t panic! After grabbing an ice cube and wrapping it in a fresh cloth, gently apply it to the pimple for five to ten minutes. This lessens the blemish’s visibility by reducing swelling and redness. Apply a small amount of your preferred concealer directly on the pimple with a clean brush or your fingers when the inflammation has been reduced. To ensure it remains hidden all day, lightly blend it and set it with a light dusting of translucent powder. Voila! Your skin is back to its best.
2.
MICELLAR WATER FOR REVIVING SMUDGED MAKEUP
A flawless appearance can be ruined by smudged makeup, whether it’s lipstick flowing out of line or smeared eyeliner. But don’t rush to wipe your face clean! Clean the smudge carefully with a cotton swab dipped in micellar water. Fix your eyeliner by cleaning the edges with the same cotton swab and then reapplying it steadily. If you have smudged lipstick, use a lip liner to outline your lips and erase any excess before reapplying the lipstick. Using this easy tip, you can maintain a flawless makeup look without having to start again.
3.
LIGHTWEIGHT OIL FOR TAMING FRIZZY HAIR
Humidity and dry air can severely damage your hair, making it frizzy and unmanageable. Don’t worry if your go-to hair serum isn’t with you. You can get great results with just a tiny amount of light oil, such as coconut or argan oil. Lightly smooth your hair, paying particular attention to the ends and any flyaways after rubbing the oil between your palms. Don’t use too much, as this might make your hair appear oily. In little time at all, your hair will look sleek and polished thanks to this easy fix.

DIY FACE MASK FOR BRIGHTENING DULL SKIN
If your skin appears worn out or lifeless from all the celebrations, a simple homemade mask will revitalise it. Apply a mixture of a teaspoon of yoghurt and honey to your face. Rinse with lukewarm water after 10 minutes of use. Yoghurt gently exfoliates and brightens your skin, while honey hydrates it. As a result, the skin seems healthy, radiant and prepared for any occasion.
5.
BLOTTING PAPER OR TISSUE FOR REFRESHING OILY SKIN
Even during a celebration, oily skin can strike, leaving your face shining in all the wrong places. If blotting paper is unavailable, fresh tissue will do the same job. Press the tissue gently on your T-zone and other greasy parts of your face to remove extra shine without removing your makeup. Apply a little layer of translucent powder afterwards for a fresh, matte appearance.
It’s common to experience beauty crises, particularly during the busy holiday season. However, if you have these easy fixes in your arsenal, you can handle any situation and maintain your best appearance at all times. So, keep yourself prepared, be calm, and enjoy the celebrations— you can do this!

The holiday season is perfect for indulging in warm, comforting dishes that bring friends and family together. One major showstopper is a stuffed and roasted duck, which combines tender meat, crispy skin, and flavourful stuffing that captures the spirit of Christmas. Let’s dive into a complete recipe for a tasty meal of stuffed duck.
Mix the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika, and rub it all over the duck, inside and out. Pierce the skin lightly with a fork to help release fat while roasting (avoid piercing the meat).
Prepare The Stuffing
In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Sauté the onion and celery until soft.
Add the diced apple, dried cranberries, and cooked sausage (if using), and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
Mix in the bread cubes, thyme, rosemary, and broth until the stuffing is slightly moist but not soggy.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Stuff The Duck
Spoon the stuffing loosely into the cavity of the duck. Avoid overstuffing, as the stuffing expands during cooking.
Tie the legs together with kitchen twine to secure the stuffing.
Roast The Duck
Place the duck breast side up on a rack in a roasting pan.
Roast for 2-2.5 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) at the thickest part.
Baste the duck with its rendered fat every 30 minutes for a crispy, golden skin.
Rest And Serve
Remove the duck from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before carving.
Serve with the stuffing and your favourite holiday sides, such as roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or cranberry sauce.
If you are ready to make your Christmas dinner unforgettable, try this stuffed and roasted duck recipe and watch the magic unfold at your festive gathering.

DOWNTOWN CONFIDENTIAL
Forbidden Love
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
Ihadalways heard stories of people finding love in the most unexpected places. I never imagined I’d become a testament to that. Of all the people in the world, my heart chose Chris. The moment I saw him, I fell— completely and irrevocably. It all started our childhood.
I was an only child, my mum didn’t trust her friends enough to drop me off with them so she could go for her business meetings and sabbaticals.
She would always drop me off at Christopher’s house. His mum, who happened to be my mum’s sister, was always ready to accept me since Chris, too, was an only child, and she needed a playmate for him.
Chris and I became inseparable. Our bond was so strong that my mum eventually enrolled me in the same school as him. We did everything together. We played, ate from the same plate, and even shared the same bed at night. As kids, we’d bathe each other, dress in matching outfits to church, and invent games only we understood. Our mothers dismissed the unusual closeness as sibling love, even when my mum initially expressed discomfort about our bathing together or the odd positions she sometimes caught us in. Over time, she stopped voicing her concerns, convinced by Chris’s mum that we’d outgrow our obsessive closeness.
him with someone else. Our childhood routines—bathing together, sharing a bed—had long ceased, but a part of me wished they hadn’t. I couldn’t understand why his growing interest in others bothered me.
Even in school, it didn’t take too long before our classmates and teacher tagged us as the perfect siblings. Before anyone could get access to Chris or even become his friend, they had to go through me and vice versa. We had a strong bond, and I wasn’t interested in mingling with others.
I was okay with Chris. Even at that young age, I knew he was the only person I was interested in doing life with, even though I didn’t know what that meant then.
As we grew older and transitioned to university, things began to change. Chris started making new friends and mingling with other girls. Though he still gave me all the attention I wanted, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy whenever I saw
The night I caught him kissing another girl was the day I found a name for what I was feeling for him. It was love. I was in love with Chris. I have always seen myself lucky to be family with Chris, but that night, for the first time, I hated that we were cousins or siblings because I knew that would be the only reason we would not be together.
But surprisingly, for me, our never-ending love story started that same night. That night, Chris came to apologise for what I’d seen. His words were soft, tinged with regret, but before I could fully process them, he leaned in and kissed me. It wasn’t the innocent affection of childhood but a kiss filled with passion and longing. To my surprise, I kissed him back. Years of suppressed emotions surged to the surface, breaking down the walls we had carefully maintained.
In an instant, he reached for my panties and bra and ripped them off. He undressed himself, too, and we were completely naked on my bed. While smooching each other, we hugged each other fiercely.
I willed his hand lower, wanting his touch, his delving fingers. As soon as his fingertip found my clit, I let out a soft moan. He stroked my inner walls intently, bringing me close to the edge several times.
Just when I thought I could take no more, he slid himself into me, and then he started thrusting, starting slowly. As soon as his thrust became faster and harder, I couldn’t control it anymore; I could feel my orgasm building. We came moments apart, and for the first time, I felt fulfilled. Chris was my first, and I am sure I was his, too.
We lay in silence after that, tangled in each other and our thoughts. The enormity of what we had done loomed over us, but so did the undeniable truth—nothing, not even the threat of judgment, could sever the bond we had forged over the years. But was love enough to defy the world? Only time will tell.

TheThe Only Christmas Movie List You’ll Need This Year
chicken is thawing, the decorations went up last week, and the people going to their village have begun their pilgrimage. It’s that time of year again, and there’s nothing better than getting a big plate of food and sitting down with loved ones to watch a good old-fashioned holiday family film. Whether you’re in the mood for a guilty-pleasure rom-com, a feel-good family feature, or a festive variety special, you’re guaranteed to find something magical among the best Christmas movies on Netflix. And, if I’m being honest? The cheesier the plot, the better. To ensure that you press play on something that’s worthy of your time, I’ve compiled 10 films that deserve a spot on this year’s “nice” list. In addition to fan favourites from seasons past, there are plenty of classics in the making here. Dig in below.
1. Klaus This Oscar-nominated animated film introduces a new origin story for Santa Claus. It centres on an unlikely duo—a reclusive toymaker (voiced by J.K. Simmons) and a self-centred postman (Jason Schwartzman)—who team up with one goal in mind: to bring joy to the children of a town in need. And by joy, I obviously mean toys.
2. A Very Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter
In her first holiday variety show, Sabrina Carpenter brings some seriously infectious, festive energy. Please, please, please feel free to sing along as she belts out holiday duets with Shania Twain, Chappell Roan, and Tyla, and enjoy comedic sketches with guest stars including Quinta Brunson.
3. SwitchFamily
In what can only be described as the full-family counterpart to Freaky Friday, Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms star as parents who are body-swapped with their teenage kids amid a strange preChristmas astrological event. Based on Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s children’s book Bedtime for Mommy, it’s a chaos-filled comedy about a family who quite literally learns what it’s like to walk in each others’ shoes.
4. That Christmas Netflix’s newest animated film is based on a trilogy of children’s books by writer-director Richard Curtis. Good news: It’s just as charming as you’d expect. This yuletide tale follows the residents of a small English town where a snowstorm is threatening to wreak some major holiday havoc. Brian Cox voices Santa Claus, and Bill Nighy, Fiona Shaw, and Jodie Whittaker bring other characters to life.
5. Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey
This John Legend-produced, criticallyacclaimed musical is a true Christmas treat. Forest Whitaker stars as a bitter toymaker who’s still not over the betrayal of a former apprentice (Keegan Michael Key) stealing his book of inventions. But when he finds himself newly inspired by his daughter (Anika Noni Rose) and granddaughter (Madalen Mills), he sets out to find joy again.
6. Our Little Secret Lindsay Lohan and Ian Harding star as exes who, in a truly unfortunate romcom twist, learn that their new partners are actually siblings. Stuck spending the holidays together under one roof, the pair grapples with the shocking revelation while hiding their romantic past from everyone else—including their significant others’ judgmental mother, played by Kristin Chenoweth.
7. Holidate
When two attractive single strangers (Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey) make a pact to be each other’s platonic plus-ones for a full year of holidays, they don’t expect to catch feelings. But really, how could they not? It’s hard to do anything but root for the pair in this refreshingly raunchy romp.
8. Christmas With You Starring Freddie Prinze Jr. The plot follows an uninspired pop star (Aimee Garcia) who heads to a small town to grant a fan’s meet-and-greet wish instead of delivering a new holiday song to her demanding label. Naturally, she ends up snowed in at the teen’s home; good thing her widowed father (Prinze) just so happens to be a songwriter.
9. Christmas Crossfire And now for something completely different. Part crime thriller, part black comedy, Christmas Crossfire skips Santa for armed shootouts as two friends’ holiday trip to the countryside goes completely off the rails. When one intervenes to stop a murder, he finds himself to be the new target of a gang of killers while his new friend—and potential love interest—does everything she can to find him before the baddies do. Leave it to the Germans to come up with a take on the festive season that’s this dark (and this funny).
10. Operation Christmas Drop Congressional aide Erica Miller (Kat Graham) is forced to skip Christmas and travel to Guam for intel on Operation Christmas Drop, a U.S. Air Force humanitarian mission whereby gifts are dropped to residents of Guam’s remote neighbouring islands. Her assignment? Provide her boss with enough reasons to defund the project. But when her guide, the dashing Captain Andrew (Alexander Ludwig), begins showing her around, Erica is reminded of the communal spirit of Christmas—12,000 kilometres from home.
