A PEPLUM TOP LIKE A PRO How to Style
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
Apeplum top is one of those classic pieces of clothing that is always trendy. Its distinctive silhouette showcases a tight bodice that widens at the waist. Peplum tops complement nearly every body type and lend a touch of beauty and elegance to any ensemble. Their versatility allows you to satisfy your fashion needs, whether you’re dressing up for an occasion or going for a more laidback style. This article will discuss six styling tips for peplum tops that will make you stand out wherever you go.
1
PAIR WITH FITTED JEANS OR SKINNY
PANTS
Wearing a peplum top with skinny pants or fitted jeans will balance its flared hem. This combination creates an attractive silhouette by elongating your legs and highlighting your waist. Consider wearing black or blue fitted jeans with a vibrantly coloured peplum top for a stylish afternoon ensemble. Combine them with sneakers for a more laid-back look; for a more formal look, wear them with heels.
2
STYLE WITH A PENCIL SKIRT
There is no better combination than a pencil skirt and a peplum top. This combination radiates refinement, making it perfect for the workplace or formal events. For a sleek aesthetic, go with a monochromatic style; alternatively, combine contrasting hues to create a striking effect.
4
TROUSERS
3
ADD A BELT FOR EXTRA DEFINITION
Although peplum tops are meant to draw attention to your waist, you can enhance the look by wearing a belt. Choose a thin, simple belt that complements the colour of the top or a statement belt with a large buckle. This method is particularly effective with solid-coloured peplum tops because the belt draws attention to your figure and creates a focal point.
6
LAYER IT WITH A JACKET OR BLAZER
Adding a jacket or blazer over your peplum top quickly adds a fashionable touch to your ensemble. When dressing for the workplace, pick a fitting jacket that matches the colour of your top. A denim or leather jacket is a good choice if you want a laid-back layered style.
Wear wide-leg pants with your peplum top for a contemporary and stylish look. This combo makes for a wellbalanced yet eye-catching ensemble. Wear high-waisted pants to ensure your waist is still highlighted. If your top is patterned, try to stay with neutral hues; if it’s plain, choose bright colours.
5
WEAR IT WITH SHORTS
Peplum tops can also be worn casually with shorts, especially in the dry season. While tailored shorts can give a dressier touch, denim shorts are a great choice for an everyday ensemble. This combination is ideal for walks on the beach, informal dates, and get-togethers with friends.
CONCLUSION
Peplum tops are comfortable, fashionable, and adaptable. Mix and match with pieces like wide-leg pants, pencil skirts, and fitted jeans to create many looks for different events. Wearing a peplum top is easy with these six styling tips, regardless of whether you’re preparing for a formal occasion, a casual get-together, or dressing for work. So, go through your closet, grab your peplum top, and follow these tips to look amazing when you go out.

@unshakable.is.a.state.of.mind
Predictable,
yes. But in this case, predictability is welcome. #Unshakable is a word that stands on its own — a force, a vibe, an attitude, a lifestyle, a state of mind. Yet, the most overlooked truth about this word is that it is not perfect. It never claimed to be. Over the years, I’ve spoken, written, and podcasted extensively about #unshakable. And one realisation has grown clearer: people mistake it for perfection. Let me set the record straight — it’s far from it. Brace yourselves for an unexpected dose of honesty.
The Journey to #Unshakable
I have walked through the flames of a broken marriage. Let me tell you, leaving is not the easier option. It
U IS FOR #UNSHAKABLE
means grappling with loneliness, starting over, and becoming the star of someone else’s soap opera. Suddenly, the world morphs into a court of judges, jurors, and executioners, each armed with their unsolicited ‘I would have done it differently’ scripts. I think the one that grates on my brain the most is ‘…you should have stayed for the sake of the kids’ – this one is a separate article; one that the world is not fully ready for just yet.
Then there were the missteps — falling into vulnerability traps set by vultures, kissing frogs while seeking a fairy tale prince, and wrestling with self-esteem that felt weighed down by invisible ‘baggage.’
Do you know how many ‘you are not good enough; you are used goods’ battles I fought in front of a mirror and won? I said it, let’s go there.
But being #Unshakable means refusing to settle. Not for frogs. Not for subpar treatment.
Parenthood, The #Unshakable Way
Raising kids as a single parent? That’s a masterclass in resilience. Playing the dual roles of mum and dad, I’ve learned to navigate football matches with my signature red and black manicured nails and matching red lipstick. My son’s side-eye could mean, ‘Mother, seriously?’ or maybe he’s secretly impressed that I can chant Arsenal hooligan songs.
And let’s not forget the math of a singleincome household. When numbers simply did not add up, I clung to faith and whispered prayers, promising my kids that their lives would embody the mantra: ‘Nothing broken, nothing incomplete.’
Being #unshakable isn’t about perfect parenting—it’s about turning beans on toast into a Michelin-star experience or convincing the kids it is. It’s about feeding five thousand with five fish and a loaf, and somehow making two plus two equal five. More often than not, those meals felt like Michelin-star moments; the impossible stretched to possible, and the miracles showed up in unexpected ways. Being #unshakable is the art of willing magic into the mundane, every…single… day.
it out one way, if not another. Not because I’m ‘independent,’ but because I’m determined. I never sat in darkness nor did shelves get stacked in the corner. Call it hope, call it ingenuity, or simply call it #unshakable.
And the bridges I’ve burned — some intentionally, some regrettably — are another testament to this mindset. While a few deserved every spark of their destruction, others left me second-guessing. Yet, acknowledgement and growth? That is #unshakable.
Risks And Rewards
My career path is a patchwork quilt of detours, re-routes, and sacrifices. I have been the biggest risk-taker I know because, in the end, I refuse to leave stones unturned. This is not about a flawless journey; it’s about an honest one.
The Heart of #Unshakable
The Unpolished Truth
Changing a lightbulb? Learning DIY? These were not skills I cared for, absolutely not, but I figured
‘King Sally’ is not a statement of gender or superiority — it is a title that encapsulates my journey. It’s about surviving depression and anxiety. It’s about life as a marathon, not a sprint. It’s about taking steps, even when your feet are blistered and the road ahead is shrouded in darkness. It’s about hope. So here I am, taking a bow. Not just for what I have endured but for creating a way of life that celebrates imperfection and resilience. This is not just about wearing the #unshakable merch — It is about embodying the mindset. Together, let’s chant it. Live it. Become it.
#Unshakable is a state of mind. Take your state of mind with you everywhere you go. Be #unshakable. Be in truth with yourself. Love yourself.
‘See’ you next week.

Among these pioneers, Dabota Lawson is a prominent figure. She joined the beauty industry with a drive for excellence and a strong academic background in professional management and financial economics. As the founder of Dabota Cosmetics, her company is renowned for its high-end makeup line that meets various demands. Beyond business,
Dabota is the author of From Likes to Launch, a book that helps prospective online business owners realise their goals. This year, she takes on a new role as one of the new cast member for the third season of The Real Housewives of Lagos Dabota explains her choice to be on the show as a chance to tell her inspirational story as a beauty entrepreneur and to showcase the vibrancy of Lagos.
In this interview with THEWILL DOWNTOWN’s Dorcas Akintoye, Dabota Lawson discusses her journey in the beauty industry, the story behind Dabota Cosmetics, her experience writing From Likes to Launch, and what fans can expect from her on The Real Housewives of Lagos.
What inspired you to venture into the beauty industry, and how did your journey begin?
What inspired me to venture into the beauty industry is a story that combines childhood memories, personal struggles and ambition.
“The future of the beauty industry in Nigeria is full of potential. As local brands gain more recognition and consumers become more conscious about what they use on their skin, I see a rising demand for clean, effective products.”
My name is Dabota Lawson, and from a very young age, I cultivated a profound passion for all things related to beauty. This fascination was largely nurtured by my mother, a talented fashion designer who always emphasised the importance of skincare and cosmetic artistry in expressing one’s individuality. Growing up surrounded by her vibrant array of makeup and fashion, I often found myself spending enthralling hours experimenting with her lipsticks, eyeshadows, and other beauty products. My journey into the beauty industry truly began when I ventured into modelling at just five years old. This early experience not only immersed me deeper into the world of aesthetics but also opened many doors for me. I was privileged to represent various brands, gaining firsthand insights into the industry and its intricacies. It was mesmerising to see how beauty could evoke emotions and transform perceptions; each photoshoot was an exploration of creativity and expression. A pivotal moment in my journey unfolded in 2010 when I won the prestigious title of Miss Nigeria UK. This accolade was not merely a personal triumph; it fueled my ambition to make a more significant, meaningful impact in the beauty realm. With this newfound recognition and a platform to voice my passion, I felt inspired to channel my experiences and insights into something extraordinary for others. I envisioned a brand that would echo my journey, embodying values of authenticity, inclusivity , my person struggle with acne and empowerment.
A few years down the line, Dabota Cosmetics was born—a clean and minimalist makeup line meticulously crafted for sensitive and acne-prone skin. I am deeply committed to ensuring that beauty products enhance appearance and care for the skin.
Understanding the unique challenges faced by individuals with sensitive skin, I wanted to create a line that minimises irritation while maximising beauty. Dabota Cosmetics stands for empowerment, reminding individuals that beauty comes from within, and that the right products can help bring out that inner radiance. In building Dabota Cosmetics, I focused on selecting high-quality ingredients that are gentle yet effective, prioritising the importance of skincare in cosmetics. Each product was thoughtfully formulated with the needs of our customers at the forefront.
for me to create a space where everyone feels welcome, understood, and celebrated—no matter their skin type or beauty preferences. In addition to developing the product line, I have also dedicated my efforts to educating my audience about the significance of proper skincare and makeup application. I firmly believe in empowering individuals through knowledge, helping them understand their skin needs and how to embrace their unique beauty. Through workshops, social media engagement, and community outreach, I aim to foster conversations around beauty and self-acceptance, encouraging individuals to embrace their true selves without fear of judgment. My journey, which began as a child playing with my mother’s makeup, has transformed into a fulfilling career dedicated to enhancing beauty and self-esteem in others. I take great pride in every product that bears the Dabota name, as each one is created with love, care, and a commitment to quality. My aspiration is to continue growing this brand, pushing boundaries, and innovating in ways that bring joy and confidence to those who use our products.
Can you share a pivotal moment that shaped your career as a beauty entrepreneur?
“I
wasn’t without its bumps. Like many entrepreneurs, I faced moments of self-doubt, especially when setbacks popped up. There were points when I felt bored and needed a new direction to channel my creativity and skills. However, I persevered, finding motivation in the idea that there’s a whole world waiting for highquality, non-toxic makeup. Joining programs like Pallet to Profit helped me unlock new opportunities and refine my business, allowing me to elevate my brand on a global scale.
What do you think sets the beauty industry in Nigeria apart from other global markets?
The beauty industry in Nigeria is distinctively vibrant and deeply rooted in our cultural diversity. Unlike some global markets, we celebrate our uniqueness through beauty. Consumers are more aware and demanding of products that resonate with their skin tones and types, and as a local brand, we’re uniquely positioned to cater to those needs with an understanding that transcends trends.
How do you ensure that your products cater to your customers’ diverse skin tones and needs?
At Dabota Cosmetics, we prioritise creating inclusive products that cater to the needs of all skin types, especially sensitive and acne-prone skin. We engage directly with our customers, seek feedback, and conduct extensive research on diverse skin tones. This drive ensures our offerings resonate with everyone—particularly those who often feel overlooked in the beauty space.
was privileged to represent various brands, gaining firsthand insights into the industry and its intricacies. It was mesmerising to see how beauty could evoke emotions and transform perceptions.”
One of my most pivotal moments was when I realised I wanted to do more than just love beauty from the outside. I wanted to innovate and create a product line that merged my business skills with my passion for beauty. The launch of Dabota Cosmetics was essentially my declaration of independence in the beauty space, aiming to define my path rather than follow the crowd. That moment marked the start of a daunting and exhilarating journey.
How has your background in financial economics influenced your business strategies in the beauty industry?
“I stay in tune with trends by constantly researching, attending industry events, and engaging with our community through social media.”
I leveraged my personal experiences with skin sensitivity and the challenges of finding suitable products to develop a line that truly resonates with many. It was crucial
My background in business and finance has been incredibly beneficial for Dabota Cosmetics. Understanding numbers, market trends, and strategic planning allows me to make well-informed decisions for the brand. It enables me to manage our growth smartly and sustainably while ensuring we stay authentic to our clean, non-toxic ethos. Balancing financial acumen with a passion for beauty has been the recipe for success.
What challenges did you face while establishing your brand, and how did you overcome them?
The road to establishing Dabota Cosmetics
What exciting new products or innovations can we expect from Dabota Cosmetics in the near future?
Exciting things are on the horizon! We’re looking to launch new lines that incorporate even more natural ingredients and sustainable practices. Given our commitment to clean beauty, we want to highlight products that are not only effective but also kind to the environment. I’m thrilled about what’s coming and can’t wait to share it all with our wonderful community.
How do you keep up with trends in the beauty industry while staying true to your brand’s identity?
I stay in tune with trends by constantly researching, attending industry events, and engaging with our community through social media. However, it’s crucial to filter those trends through the lens of our brand’s core values of cleanliness and minimalism. I make sure that any trends we adopt align with our mission of providing high-quality, non-toxic products without compromising on efficacy.
Who are your role models or inspirations, and how have they shaped your journey?
I draw inspiration from strong female leaders and entrepreneurs, especially women who have pioneered their own paths in the beauty industry. Their resilience and innovative spirit resonate with me and motivate me to push boundaries. Particularly my mentor, Madam Eryca Freemantle, whose extraordinary influence has helped me shape my career path in the beauty industry. She has an exceptional talent for recognising and fostering potential and has paved the way for many. These women of valour remind me that staying true to oneself can lead to authenticity in business, which is so important today.
What is your perspective on the industry’s evolving beauty standards and inclusivity?
The evolving beauty standards and the push for inclusivity are refreshing and necessary. They reflect a widespread recognition that beauty isn’t one-size-fits-all. At Dabota Cosmetics, we
wholeheartedly embrace this change.
Our aim is to contribute to that evolution by promoting products that celebrate every individual’s unique beauty, encouraging everyone to feel confident in their skin.
How do you see the future of the beauty industry in Nigeria and globally?
The future of the beauty industry in Nigeria is full of potential. As local brands gain more recognition and consumers become more conscious about what they use on their skin, I see a rising demand for clean, effective products.
Globally, the trend toward sustainability and authenticity will continue to shape the industry, paving the way for brands that align with these values—Dabota Cosmetics included.
You were announced as part of the new cast for the coming third season of The Real Housewives of Lagos. What inspired you to join the show, and what can viewers expect from you?
Joining The Real Housewives of Lagos was inspired by a desire to showcase the beauty and dynamism of Lagos, as well as share my journey as a beauty entrepreneur. Viewers can expect authenticity and a glimpse into my professional life, mingled with personal moments that highlight the joys and challenges of balancing motherhood, business, friendship and life in general.
everything from accessing funding to crafting a compelling narrative, all while navigating an evolving landscape. I wanted to create a resource that reflects our reality while offering practical guidance.

Dabota Cosmetics stands as a testament to that; it’s proof that you can carve out your own space in this ever-evolving industry with passion, innovation, and a commitment to quality.

FINDING YOUR TRIBE
BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKE
They say friends are the family you choose, but finding the right ones, your own tribe, can seem startling. In a world brimming with endless possibilities for connection, how do you discover those rare gems who truly “get” you? The people who lift you, inspire you, and make you feel like you’ve finally found a home? Finding your tribe is about building authentic, meaningful connections with people who align with your values, share your passions, and make you laugh until your stomach hurts. If you’ve been yearning for effortless yet profound friendships, this article is your roadmap to finding your tribe.
You need to understand yourself before you find people who understand you. Consider your values, passions, and interests. Reflect on what kind of energy you want to attract and what kind of friendships you seek. Connecting with like-minded individuals who share your vibe becomes easier when you’re clear on who you are. If you love fitness, joining a gym or a fitness group can naturally connect you with others who share your passion.
Yourself First 1. 5.
Focus on Quality Over Quantity
3. 2. 4. Stay Open-Minded And Patient
It’s impossible to find your tribe if you’re always in your comfort zone. Take that art class you’ve been thinking about, attend networking events, or join an online forum for a hobby you enjoy. The more you expose yourself to new environments, the higher your chances of meeting the right people. Don’t hesitate to start a conversation. A simple “Hey, I loved what you said about…” can go a long way in breaking the ice.
Having a large group of friends isn’t as important as having a few genuine connections. Pay attention to how people make you feel. Are they supportive and kind, or do they leave you feeling drained? Prioritise those who align with your values and uplift you. An important thing to know is to set boundaries with people who don’t bring positivity into your life.
Friend
Building meaningful friendships requires effort on your part, too. Be the kind of friend you want to have. Show up, listen, and support others. The more authentic and caring you are, the more likely you’ll attract people who are the same. Practice active listening—it’s one of the most underrated but powerful ways to connect with others.
Finding your tribe doesn’t happen overnight. Be open to connecting with people from different backgrounds. Sometimes, the most unexpected friendships are the most rewarding. It’s okay if not every connection leads to a deep friendship. Each interaction is a step closer to finding your tribe.
ABOUT EAR PIERCING Everything You Need to Know
1.
The most popular ear piercing, and usually the first people get, is a lobe piercing. Since there is minimal cartilage in the earlobe, which is the soft, fleshy portion of the ear, it is frequently the least painful procedure. It usually takes six to eight weeks for this piercing to heal, which is faster than others. It is often recommended for beginners because of the mild pain. The uses for lobe piercings are numerous. You can wear dangling earrings, hoops, studs, or even stack many piercings on the lobe for a layered style.
2.
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
More than just a fad for beauty, ear piercings are now a way for people to display their individuality, sense of style, and occasionally even their culture. Ear piercings come in various styles these days, each with a distinct appearance and level of dedication. Knowing what to anticipate from each option is helpful, whether you’re considering getting your first piercing or want to add more. In this article, we will show you popular ear piercings so you can make an informed choice and find the best fit for your style.
3.
5. LOBE PIERCING HELIX PIERCING DAITH PIERCING CONCH PIERCING TRAGUS PIERCING
The upper cartilage of the ear is where the helix piercing is done. This elegant and subtle option is ideal for people who prefer something more than the traditional lobe but not overly extravagant. The healing process often takes three to six months because the helix is located in the cartilage. Additionally, because the cartilage is thicker in helix piercings than in lobe piercings, they typically cause more pain. But the level of pain is still tolerable. You can get several helix piercings for a stylish “stacked” style.
CONCLUSION
The tiny portion of cartilage that partially covers the ear canal is where the tragus piercing is done. It’s a distinctive location that draws attention without being overwhelming. Patience is essential because it may take three to nine months for this one to cure completely. Expect a painful pinch because the tragus has thicker cartilage. However, the discomfort normally subsides quickly because it’s a small area. Tragus piercings look fantastic with small hoops or studs.
4.
Above the ear canal, a daith piercing passes through the inner fold of cartilage. Despite the lack of scientific evidence, it is renowned for its distinctive appearance and is occasionally thought to relieve migraines. Depending on how well you care for it, the daith may take three to six months to recover. Because of its placement and thicker cartilage, this piercing is known to be more painful, but many people believe the stylish appearance makes it worthwhile. Daith piercings have a modest yet striking appeal when styled with tiny hoops or clicker rings.
The conch piercing is made in the larger inner cartilage region of the ear. A stud can be positioned in the flat middle of an inner conch or an outer conch that can hold a hoop around the outer edge of the ear. Like other cartilage piercings, the conch piercing should heal in three to nine months. Considering how thick the cartilage is, this piercing is frequently reported as moderately uncomfortable. A larger hoop that encircles the ear can be used for the outer conch, while a stud is a good choice for the inner conch. When paired with other piercings, this piercing is particularly striking and adaptable.
Deciding to get an ear piercing is thrilling and entertaining, but it’s crucial to know the possibilities and recovery times for each one. Each style provides a unique flair to your overall appearance, whether you’re going for a dramatic conch or a subtle lobe piercing. Be patient with the healing process, avoid touching the piercings excessively, and adhere to the recommended aftercare procedures. In this manner, you may confidently display your style and enjoy your new ear piercings without any issues.
GUT CHECK
Easy Steps to Improve Digestive Wellness
Your gut is more than just a food processor; yes, that’s right. It is the cornerstone of your overall well-being. From fueling your energy to enhancing your immunity and even lifting your mood, a healthy digestive system works wonders for your body. Yet, with the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to overlook how your habits impact your digestive health.
Do you feel bloated, sluggish, or uncomfortable after meals? That’s just your gut’s way of signalling for help.
Our health guide will explore practical and effective ways to achieve better digestive health so you can feel lighter, healthier, and more energised every day. Let’s help you take the first step towards a happier, healthier you, starting with your gut.
Prioritise A Fiber-Rich Diet
Fiber is your digestive system’s best friend. It helps regulate bowel movements, prevent constipation, and maintain a healthy gut. There are two types of fiber. Soluble fiber, found in oats, apples, and legumes, softens stool and promotes gut bacteria. Insoluble fiber, found in whole grains, nuts, and vegetables, adds bulk and keeps food moving through the digestive tract. Gradually increase your fiber intake to prevent bloating or discomfort. Aim for at least 25–30 grams of fiber daily.
Stay Hydrated
Water plays a crucial role in digestion. It helps dissolve nutrients, making them easier for your body to absorb, softens stool, and prevents constipation. Dehydration can slow digestion, leading to discomfort and other issues. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water daily and eat water-rich foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges.
BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKE
Incorporate Probiotics And Prebiotics
Your gut is home to trillions of bacteria that influence digestion and overall health. Probiotics (good bacteria) and prebiotics (food for good bacteria) are essential for a balanced gut microbiome. Yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi are excellent sources of probiotics, while bananas, garlic, onions, and asparagus are sources of prebiotics. A healthy gut microbiome can improve nutrient absorption, reduce bloating, and even boost immunity.
Practice Mindful Eating
The pace at which you eat matters. Eating too quickly can lead to overeating, indigestion, and bloating. Mindful eating encourages you to slow down and truly savour your meals, giving your body time to signal fullness.
Reduce Stress And Stay Active
Stress and inactivity can wreak havoc on your digestive system. Chronic stress triggers the release of hormones that slow digestion, while a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to constipation. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, yoga, or meditation. Take short walks after meals to stimulate digestion.
Incorporate regular exercise into your routine to keep your digestive system active and efficient. Your digestive system is central to your overall health; nurturing it doesn’t require complex solutions. Small, consistent changes can lead to long-term benefits, helping you feel lighter, more energetic, and ready to take on the day.

Fighting The Demon Within
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
Bto say, but David, on the other hand, had plenty. He would tell me stories about how good his exes were in bed and talk about the things he wanted to do to me when I was ready to have sex with him. Sometimes, we’d discuss BDSM, and he’d ask me what I’d do if I found out my partner was a sadist. I remember him asking if I’d ever been choked during sex, and when I said no, he playfully showed me how it’s done. We laughed about it. I never felt strange or uncomfortable during these conversations. I thought it was a good thing. I believed it would help us understand each other’s sexual needs and make it easier to communicate when the time came. I also thought it would prepare me to meet the kind of standards his exes had set. Regardless, I loved David deeply and was willing to do anything to make him happy. After about a year of friendship, we finally defined our relationship and started dating. Everything was great— until our first kiss. My heart was racing, and I couldn’t focus. Thoughts about how his exes might have kissed him kept flooding my mind. Before I knew it, I lost my rhythm, and this awkward sound escaped my mouth. It became obvious that I was struggling, and David, noticing my discomfort, stopped. Kissing wasn’t new to me—I’d kissed one or two guys before David. Those guys told me they enjoyed it, but I was never satisfied with myself. Deep down, I felt like I was doing something wrong and they were just being nice. I never felt any emotions during those moments, which I thought was because I didn’t truly like them. That afternoon, David was calm about the whole thing. He didn’t say anything about me kissing the wrong way or about me being distracted. Instead, he pulled me closer to his side, and we cuddled. He told me he enjoyed the moment we had and was excited about me getting better. That should have made me feel better, but it didn’t. It only added more pressure. I became even more nervous about our next make-out session.
thought of losing him because of my struggles with intimacy was unbearable.
I started reading books about kissing and intimacy to learn. I couldn’t stop wondering why it was so hard to relax and enjoy the moment. I loved David so much, and the
After reading some books and watching some videos, I thought I had everything figured out until our next make-out session. This one was very different because David was in the mood and ready to take things further. Seeing his boner, I knew I had to do better. I knew I had to deliver, which made me more nervous. Everything was happening so fast that I forgot about everything I had read and watched. I just lay there like a log of wood, faking enjoyment while my mind raced. Even when he finally penetrated, I wasn’t sure if I was moaning the right way. It was overwhelming, and I couldn’t wait for it to be over.
As usual, David acted normal afterwards. He didn’t complain or make me feel bad. But it was
then I realised the real problem: it was me. I was bringing my low self-esteem into my sexual life. David never made me feel less than or pressured me to compete with his exes. I was the one overthinking, struggling to be in the moment, and finding it hard to be myself.
I knew David’s patience wouldn’t last forever, and I didn’t want to wait until he got tired of me. So, I decided to take a break—not from him, but from my insecurities. I needed time to discover myself, to figure out why I felt this way, and to fight the demon within me. I needed to build my confidence and work on my self-esteem. I wasn’t sure where to start, but I knew that, eventually, I’d find the answers to every doubt in my mind.

MOVIE REVIEW:
Overcome by terror, a character near the end of Robert Eggers’ remake of Nosferatu shrieks, “What is this insufferable darkness?” Let that be a warning: for his fourth feature, the writer/ director has crafted an absorbing nightmare from which there is no escape. Inspired by FW Murnau’s 1922 silent film, Eggers gives us a gothic horror that teeters on the edge of madness, resulting in an elegantly woven tapestry of encroaching evil. Led by Bill Skarsgard as the unholy titular monster, this Nosferatu leaves its mark as one of the most memorable vampire tales.
Fans of this director, who has previously made The Northman, The Lighthouse and The Witch, will no doubt be intrigued by this remake, which he has tried to mount for about a decade, and a supporting cast that includes Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson should also attract audiences. Set in Germany in 1838, this remake stars Hoult as Thomas, a young real estate agent dispatched to Transylvania to meet with an eccentric client, Count Orlok (Skarsgard), who is about to buy a condemned property in Thomas’ hometown of Wisborg. But once Thomas meets Orlok, it is clear this menacing figure has ulterior motives — namely, that he wishes to hunt down the object of his mysterious obsession, Thomas’ bride Ellen (Depp).
Murnau’s silent classic, based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, remains a taut, haunting horror film, with Max Schreck unforgettable as the inhuman Orlok. The 1922 Nosferatu influenced the 1979 Werner Herzog remake Nosferatu The Vampyre — not to mention the cheeky 2000 thriller Shadow Of The Vampire, an imagined look at the making of the original Nosferatu, starring Willem Dafoe as Schreck, who turns out to be an actual vampire. (Eggers also casts Dafoe, who appeared in the director’s two previous films, in his Nosferatu.) These
different vampire iterations — as well as Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 hit Bram Stoker’s Dracula — have kept Stoker’s indelible monster alive in film culture for more than a century.
Working with frequent collaborators, cinematographer Jarin Blaschke, and production designer Craig Lathrop, Eggers is fairly faithful to the Dracula/ Nosferatu legend. But what makes this a standout take is the intensity of its visceral horror and the commitment of its hyperbolic performances. Starting in a fairly realistic vein, the film slowly grows more unnerving once the mild-mannered Thomas reaches Orlok’s foreboding castle. Soon, Simon McBurney is giving a demented turn as the possessed Herr Knock, while Dafoe endearingly chews the scenery as Professor Von Franz, an occultist who quickly realises that something wicked has made its way to Wisborg. The knowingly heightened performances lend Nosferatu a welcome infusion of levity amidst the suffocating dread while starkly contrasting Wisborg’s genteel, privileged society with the death and unfathomable evil that Orlok represents.
David White’s expert makeup and prosthetics work transforms Skarsgard, who played the malicious Pennywise in the It films, into the ghoulish, long-nailed, corpse-like Orlok, whose thick Transylvanian accent only accentuates his creepy otherworldliness. It is a portrayal devoid of charm or flair, with Skarsgard depicting a force of nature that cannot be stopped or reasoned with. Unlike some other Dracula pictures, there is nothing swooningly romantic about Orlok’s fervour for Ellen — here, it is simply a ferocious, animalistic craving. Skarsgard’s chilling portrayal is underlined by Blaschke’s shadowladen cinematography and Robin Carolan’s driving score, which help envelop the viewer in Eggers’ doomy atmosphere.
At over two hours — Murnau’s original was a fleet 90 minutes — this remake can sometimes drag in between the filmmaker’s masterful horror sequences, which are terrifying without being aggressively gory. Some in the cast, including Taylor-Johnson as Thomas, have to compensate for underwritten characters. But while Depp is not initially a particularly dynamic Ellen, she is volcanic once this bride falls under Orlok’s deadly spell, giving a performance as harrowingly physical as any in recent memory.
It can be hard to breathe while watching this Nosferatu, but alongside that fear is a jubilation at watching a top-flight genre filmmaker bring his considerable talents to an immortal story, finding new ways to send shivers down our spines. The 1922 original was subtitled A Symphony Of Horror — Eggers similarly conducts like a maestro, building to a stunning crescendo.

WHAT IF? SEASON 3
What If…?, the long-running Marvel comic book series, is one of the most fun titles in the company’s entire repertoire. Each issue places one of their characters in some new context, either by examining a different pivotal choice they could have made or by shifting them into another universe entirely. The streaming adaptation from Marvel Animation, now in its third season, continues this storytelling style with your favourite characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, delivering multiversal shenanigans with mixed—but mostly fun—results.
As with the comics, each episode takes heroes we already know and places them in a new situation and, as in previous seasons, the characters are (mostly) voiced by the actors that play them in the liveaction movies and series, too. That means when Captain America shows up, it’s actually Anthony Mackie voicing him, and the same with The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Binary (Teyonah Parris), ShangChi (Simu Liu), Moon Knight (Oscar Isaac), Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), and even Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg). Each story is narrated and presided over by The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), an allseeing cosmic being.
As with previous seasons of the show–and with any anthology series–your mileage with each episode may vary. In these particular episodes a connecting plot has yet to emerge, but this critic holds that as a good thing. These stories are at their most fun when they are a one-off, both self-contained and weird. In
fact, if there is a complaint to be made about the show, it’s that it often doesn’t get weird enough, although episode four makes up for this a little bit by going completely overboard (in a good way).
Another small quibble is that some of this season’s episodes may be a bit unapproachable to the more casual fans of the franchise. One such episode has a prologue that is several minutes of Jeffrey Wright expositing a whole new universe before anyone else even has a chance to speak, which is a lot when each episode is less than half an hour long. Still, for those in the audience who are deep in the MCU lore, this series may well end up feeling like it was made
specifically for them, showing them versions of characters they’ve wanted to see in styles and tones they’ve wanted to see Marvel try.
It’s hard to ignore that audiences are feeling a real sense of Marvel fatigue and multiversal fatigue as a whole. While this series is not likely to fix this for anyone, it is exactly the kind of thing that makes multiversal storytelling so potentially fun.
The bottom line here is that if you have liked What If…? to this point, you will definitely continue to do so. If you are a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, nothing here will turn you away, and you might even hope to see some of the versions of these characters again. If you’re not already a fan, this series may not be the best entry point, but luckily, there’s something to love for those of us who are.
