EDITOR’S NOTE

Working on this week’s issue made me think of my very first day at THEWILL DOWNTOWN. You see, I had been offered a position, but turned it down because as far as I was concerned, it was a demotion from my previous job as EditorIn-Chief, not just of the fashion magazine alone, but also of the publishing house that housed four magazines. After long conversations with family and senior friends in management, I decided to take the job as Beauty Editor on the condition that I would not be part of the daily activities; I would simply turn in one page a week and nothing more. I guess my experience couldn’t hide for long because the next thing I knew, I was looking through pieces sent in, and then, later invited by the publisher to be part of the production process; the stage of making a magazine that generally puts a smile on my face. Then there was an opening for the position of Editor and while I thought someone else had been hired for the job, I got a call from the publisher informing me that I was now the Editor of the magazine and called a meeting. There, he mentioned that I was now the Substantive Editor -thank you, publisher, for trusting my work. And so my journey continued, but now as Editor of DOWNTOWN. One year on with the magazine, and I can’t say how grateful and blessed I feel to be working with such a great team; from the writers to photographers, graphics designers to contributors, makeup artists, and makeup companies, designers, and one or two stylists. I’d mention all your names but I don’t have the luxury of space (please see page 4, I hope I didn’t leave anyone out). I have also had immense encouragement from family and friends, and some readers have cheered on too. For your support guys, I say: Thank you to you all. Happy First Anniversary to The DOWNTOWN Team! Until next week, enjoy your read.

he fashion business is one of the best places to examine cultural change. With the end of the previous lifestyle of sitting in and watching a movie on Netflix, or working from home in plain sight, everyone is ready to make the best-dressed list on a night out. Events are back on the radar, and the energy that had been bottled up for what felt like an eternity is ready to erupt. With so much vivacity in the air, so many things to do, and places to go; whether you choose to attend a cocktail event, dinner for two on Valentine's Day, or an anniversary gathering, you can't go wrong with any of these outfits.

unny how time flies when you are having fun. I still consider sending my articles to the editor at THEWILL DOWNTOWN as a new gig, so you could not have been more surprised than me when she told me that my next piece was for the one-year anniversary. On the one hand, we have been through the wars. On the other, what in the cinnamon toast crunch? Of course, as with any marking of an arbitrary human-constructed milestone, a person gets to thinking. Hard.

Remember, Always Gratitude

This story starts in 1998. Sex and the City was fresh on our screens, and I was busy falling in love with four women living fantastical lives in New York. In my life, I was busy being a resident pharmacist at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital Trust, with imposter syndrome and the genuine fear of killing somebody and my insurance company letting me go to jail, having me basically in a work-study-sleep loop. Friday night with the girls and the way they were living, great clothes, high heels (I was one of the only people in England

PAGE 6

wearing leather Birkenstock shoes at the time), and cosmos in fabulous locations may as well have been a science fiction series compared with how I was living. For some random reason, I latched on to Carrie and her career as a writer as what really would be blissful living. I particularly loved a frequent episodic epilogue, starting with Carrie with her laptop gazing out of her window and panning out to the street where New Yorkers would be beautifully passing by. Being creative just seemed so fabulous, colourful, and gratifying. The controversy about how Carrie couldn't be making enough money to afford the lifestyle she was living was barely a blip in my consciousness. (Stay with me, folks. This is all going to make sense in the end.) I kept saying I would love to write, I would love to share my stories, I would love my stories to have an audience. A few years later, I slip and fall into a creative opportunity. Somehow, I end up writing regularly for a national newspaper. I forgot how much it meant to me to have this creative outlet, somewhere along the line I forgot how much I wanted it. I never really believed my friends when they said they enjoyed my articles; instead, I got bogged down and discouraged by previous editors who just didn’t get me.

My Taoist Farmer Story

I began to get a bit blasé about it all, and then the pandemic hit. You were probably unaware of how the inability to import paper at the time affected the publishing industry. It meant that my services were no longer needed even though I tried to continue my articles online, etc. I thought disaster had struck! It was a blessing. When the opportunity to write for The newly-going-to-print THEWILL Newspaper came up, I was available. I could not have been more eager for the chance. So here we are, twenty-three years later. I am celebrating the first anniversary with a publication that, at the very least, is making dreams come true for this appreciative wannabe writer. It has been a pleasure working with the DOWNTOWN team, I know how much passion, sweat, and tears go into every single edition. Congratulations to our Publisher and Editor for steering the ship, and this girl hopes we celebrate MANY happy returns.

Happy Birthday!

DOWNTOWN CONFIDENTIAL

The dopamine released when listening to music heightens arousal and elevates a sexual interlude when music and sex are combined in one moment." Image:ClipArt Library

BY TILEWA KAZEEM

A

nyone who knows me is aware of how much I love music. In our life together I may have even shared a couple of songs with you. There’s something about it being able to describe indescribable feelings and emotions. Listening to music is a pleasurable activity, in part due to the release of dopamine; and Dr. Rhonda Freeman, who is a neuropsychologist agrees with me. She believes that music directly impacts the limbic system, pleasure centre, and bonding centre of the brain. Chores with or without music? I'm sure most would choose with music and if you didn't, that’s ok too. And it doesn't have to be super loud but having it gently breathing in the background helps keep you focused—at least for me. It wasn’t until I heard a 'kiss and tell' recommend it during sex that I understood music and sex are family. Before then all the sex I had seen was on MBC 2 and Goldfinger, and it was through my brother's fingers. He either forced me to my room or changed the station. The dopamine released when listening to music heightens arousal and elevates a sexual interlude when music and sex are combined in one moment. After this new knowledge, everyone who played music on a hot afternoon, right after he had just ushered a girl into his apartment, was an alleged fornicator until proven otherwise. And because I was in my musician friend's apartment most times, I got to witness a lot of that. His home advantage offered him an abundance of prep time. I would create playlists

MUSICAL STROKES with R'n'B songs that had the same beats per minute (BPM). I also threw in some of his songs as a courtesy for letting me stay so long and he got to brag to his orbiting female visitors. And somehow, every time he had a girl over there was either power supply or the generator was in a good mood. Whereas in my case, I wasn't so lucky. It wasn't until I had left school that I was able to harness the sexual powers of music. It was some months after I had left the university and a few months to my NYSC program. I had just met this girl who had something called an unassuming derriere. She had a very tight figure so you never noticed what she was packing on her backside until she walked past you or in my case, was stark naked.

She had paid me a visit and the gears of the ‘Netflix and chill’ were turning. I suggested we skip to the chill part of the exercise and she solemnly obliged. Burna Boy’s African Giant album is on repeat and our tongues are gracefully intertwined. One minute I'm sliding off her silk panties, the next, I'm tugging on her hair. After successfully distracting myself by mouthing a couple of tracks, a few rhythmic thrusts here and there, I bested my usual score. Getting her “I really had fun today. Maybe we can do this tomorrow?” text was all the evidence I needed of this new achievement I had just unlocked and one I'll keep using.

There's more to music than just cloaking the lovemaking in an environment of roommates or family members. It has a psychological impact on relationships with sex. Having sex while listening to music can lower inhibitions. The experience of listening to music is spontaneous and liberating. Consequently, some individuals may experience higher levels of sexual pleasure after letting go of sexual inhibitions. Furthermore, music has shown to be effective in reducing stress, which can interfere with sexual pleasure and arousal. Movements can be influenced by the rhythms in music. Good music beats can enhance performance and increase satisfaction. It is particularly useful for people who have had problems with movement in the past. By introducing music into the sexual environment, you can increase more than physical arousal. If you have a low sexual drive, music can set the mood and get things going. Music can provide a distraction from negative thoughts, such as those about body image or performance, and it can curb nervousness. In addition to distracting a person, music can help them concentrate on a particular task. And what lover wouldn't want their partner to be focused on them?

years ago when Austyn Ogannah founded THEWILL Newspaper, first published in San Francisco, California, the indications were clear on what kind of media house he wanted to run—one that stays refreshingly authentic and leaves an imprint on public policy, politically and socially. On the 14th of February last year, the first edition of the weekly newspaper became available on newsstands across the country. THEWILL DOWNTOWN magazine, the glossy insert publication to THEWILL Newspaper, became mainstream on the same day. In an already saturated industry, we set out to do something different, to keep you up-to-date with lifestyle happenings across the world, placing a spotlight on Nigeria, not only as a fashion hub, but also as a nation blessed with great people whose stories deserve to be told. This has positioned us as a media outfit that is just as suitable for the Generation Z and Millennials, as it is for Baby Boomers and Generation X— everyone is catered to. Ever since becoming your favourite weekly lifestyle magazine exactly a year ago, we have had a vastly diverse and inclusive range of cover personalities that not only cut across different industries, but are also giants of it. Here is what some of them have to say about THEWILL DOWNTOWN.

WORDS to EAT by

DOWNTOWN EATS

UZO ORIMALADE

No Worries A

nniversaries. Much ado about nothing. The day we met. The first time we spoke on the phone. The anniversary of the anniversary that we held hands for the first time. I roll my eyes and mutter not very polite things under my breath every time I see anniversary celebrations. It is therefore the ultimate joke that Lady Life is playing on me with this relationship that I am in. I was not looking to get involved with anyone. However, he waltzed into my life and is almost perfect. Except for this important thing – he loves to celebrate anniversaries of anything. I tell him he must have been deprived of something as a child. He enter dates in his calendar so there are loud reminders. He makes calls, he buys gifts, he puts on a big show. I play along because you know – after years of kissing a lot of frogs, a man with no mommy issues, no baby mama drama, no 50 Shades of Grey predilections, no skeletons leaping out of closets (yet) - I can bear all the fuss. Don't get me wrong, I am not a bad person. I just don’t do anniversaries. Part of this whole being in a relationship thing is making the effort to make the other person happy. Which is why I find myself in this cooking class on a Saturday evening when I can be doing other things. The lover has been reminding me for the past month that our first anniversary is on February 14. We have had heated conversations about this for a few reasons: I do not think there is a specific date when ‘we’ began. I dislike Valentine’s Day in Lagos with all the traffic and all-round public displays and declarations of ‘love’. After weeks of trying to make a date happen, he offered to bring takeout to my office, and we had dinner in the conference room on February 14. He has chosen that date as our anniversary. I counter with the fact that it was just a convenient day to meet and eat. I figure cooking something together is as good a gift as any – a shared experience rather than buying something he probably doesn’t need. A quick ask around and I managed to secure a 3-hour class with Afrolems. I tell her, nice and simple yet wow. I am no domestic goddess. She decides to teach me to make these food packets. Or rather she corrects me – en papillote. Sure sure, call it that but it is essentially prawns, sausages, potatoes, sweet corn, herbs, seasoning and white wine; in the packet and in the oven. Easy enough and looks impressive. Cooking class is done and I leave with a list of things to buy to recreate this dish on the day. February 14 rolls around. I rush to the store to get the shopping done. Not a good idea. The stores are like

madhouses, and someone calls me a name when I grab the last pack of strawberries in the fridge. Rush back home and I realize - I forgot to buy the parchment paper for the packet. No worries. I can use foil. The doorbell rings and it is the lover. Grinning and bearing gifts. I announce dinner will be ready in a jiffy. Considering I have done absolutely no prep, this is a bold faced lie. I go back into the kitchen and search high and low for the recipe card Afrolems gave me. I cannot find it. No worries. I remember everything she said. I carefully assemble the foil packets. All that is left is the white wine. I realize I forgot that too. No worries. It is alcohol required. All I have is some brandy. That should work. I put the packets in the oven and try to light it. The oven is not coming on. Hmmm. Afrolems said these cook fast. So I think – No worries. I watch Food Network sometimes. I see them cook things on open flames. I shall do the same. I light 2 spots on the stove top. I am excited. I should cook more often. The lover walks in. ‘I smell brandy’. Yes indeed. Then he pauses. He looks at the lit burners. And the foil packets. ‘Is the brandy in the foil packets? To go over the burners?’ ‘Yes. The oven is being funny. No worries though’ I say as I put both packets on the flames. He screams- ‘Get back’ I turn around in alarm. ‘What?’ He grabs me and pulls me towards the door. BOOM!!!! Fire from the packets, licking the walls...I stare in horror. The lover grabs a fire extinguisher and like the hero in a corny rom-com, he puts the fire out. I am in shock. What just happened? He turns to me and says brandy, foil, over open flames is a recipe for disaster. Oh. I smile shakily at him and say ‘Happy Anniversary.’

Uzo’s Food Packets – Corn, Shrimp, Potatoes, Sausages in Foil Packets To make 6 packets, you will need: •

3 corn cobs cut into 2 pieces each

6 large potatoes cut into 4 pieces each (Irish, Russet, Sweet varieties)

6 smoked sausages – cut into 4 pieces each

24 large shrimp. Peeled, deveined. Tails on if you prefer

Half a bottle white wine (use wine good enough to drink)

1 table spoon paprika (smoked if you have it)

3 garlic cloves – minced

1 teaspoon salt (more once you taste the sauce if you prefer)

1 teaspoon ground white pepper

¼ teaspoon Cameroon pepper

½ teaspoon honey

Salted butter – 6 teaspoons

Thyme sprigs

Basil leaves (any variety you prefer)

How to: •

Preheat oven to 350 degrees or gas mark 4

Cut out 6 large pieces of aluminium foil and set aside

In a bowl, whisk the wine, paprika, garlic, salt, peppers and honey well and set aside

On a baking tray, lay a piece of foil on it

Put a piece of corn, 4 pieces of potatoes, 4 pieces of sausage, 4 shrimp on the piece of foil

Pour a few spoons of the wine mix over the foil pieces

Add a teaspoon of butter, a sprig of thyme and a basil leaf

Fold the foil packets securely and repeat the process until all 6 packets are done

Cook in the oven for 25-30 minutes until the potatoes are done

Serve the foil packets on plates – juices and all Enjoy!!!

Playlist for the week

t’s that time of the year again, where hampers and flower arrangements abound. Your boo and your boo’s boo are preparing to be showered with love and attention. An essential aspect of this season is the annual Romantic Movie Binge Watch. Taking time out to sit with that special person and watch romantic movies over wine or snacks is always a rewarding experience. Here are 10 of some of the most passionate, romantic movies to watch. Happy Valentine’s Day!

1.Sylvie's Love

4.50 First Dates

We can't decide what's more gorgeous about this film: The love story or the sets and costumes that recreate life in '50s and '60s New York. Tessa Thompson stars as Sylvie, an aspiring TV producer who feels a palpable connection with a jazz musician, Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha). But due to other ambitions and obligations, the couple can't be together—until they're offered another chance years later.

Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) has to get creative while dating Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore) because of her short-term memory loss, which makes her forget who he is and how they fell in love. Though heartbreaking, it's tough not to get swept away by his exhaustive attempts at recreating the perfect first date for her.

2.Bride and Prejudice

5. Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind

You might already be acquainted with Pride and Prejudice's beginning, middle, and end—but each adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel offers up new wisdom (and swoon-worthy moments). Directed by Gurinder Chadha, Bride and Prejudice follows sisters in Amritsar, India trying to forge their trails while also dealing with social conventions.

Considered one of the most innovative love stories ever, this fantasy film follows Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) throughout various stages of their relationship. While its depiction of romance is realistic and moving, it's all the more memorable for scenes in which mind-erasing is involved.

3.The Notebook This romance is based on Nicholas Sparks's novel of the same name, which takes place in North Carolina after World War II. The young and affluent socialite Allie Calhoun (Rachel McAdams) meets the charming and poor Noah (Ryan Gosling) one summer, developing a bond that surpasses obstacles such as time and illness. Forewarning: you'll definitely need to keep a box of tissues handy for this one.

6. The Spectacular Now

Think back to your first love. The Spectacular Now captures the precise whirl of two people experiencing something profound together. As they're falling in love, high school seniors Aimee (Shailene Woodley) and Sutter (Miles Teller) also face down the reality that their lives are about to change. Performances by Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley elevate an already tender story into something unforgettable. You'll be 17 again—and then, maybe happy you're not.

Daniel Caesar - CYANIDE

7. Love Actually

You'll never get tired of Love Actually, even after watching it hundreds of times (if you're in the pro-Love Actually camp, of course). In addition to romance, it chronicles betrayal and heartbreak. And what makes this a Valentine’s Day must-watch is that it shows every stage of love, from the honeymoon phase to the challenges and dysfunctional aspects of being in it for the long haul.

8.Eat, Pray, Love Adapted from Elizabeth Gilbert’s 2007 bestselling memoir, Eat, Pray, Love, Julia Roberts stars as Liz Gilbert, a newly-divorced travel writer seeking to discover pleasure, prayer, and mindfulness in Italy and India. Along her journey to self-discovery, she opens herself up to love at her final destination in Indonesia.

9. Casablanca

This classic drama is set during World War II and stars Humphrey Bogart as a nightclub owner in Casablanca, who's forced to choose between his love for his former girlfriend (played by Ingrid Bergman) and helping her and her rebel husband escape to America. There are few better films to watch on the day of love.

10. Titanic

Ever heard of it? Look, I don't have to tell you about Titanic. You know Titanic, you love Titanic, you've cried to Titanic. Near, far, wherever you are, I believe Titanic will, at one point, come for us all. If you like to cap off Valentine's Day with a good cry, well, here you go.

A DRAMATIC YEAR AGO

BY KEHINDÉ FAGBULE

Ajmoney Tuface and Annie

T

here is no questioning how much power the media wields. Back in the days, people would rendezvous at the newspaper stand to debate headlines from politics to entertainment, going at it as passionately as though whatever utterances they make in that instance had the power to influence how the event plays out. Things are different now, however. With the popularity of social media, we've taken those newspaperjoint conversations online. We've all become digital consultants, confidants, in-laws, juries, and sometimes narrators of strangers' stories, courtesy of the power vested in us by social media platforms to publish opinions and be part of larger dialogues. With that much power, of course, it becomes toxic. Created to be a space for public discourse, social media platforms have somehow managed to be the subject of much of that discourse as seen just recently when the Federal Government of Nigeria welcomed Twitter back in the country after initially placing a ban on it for seven months. Since the first websights page was published a year ago, we have seen more drama than Zee World can boast of—some of them becoming jests, while others took vicious turns. Here are three of the dramatic stories that have been featured in this column.

1. The Generation Wars Featuring Millennials vs Gen-Z

The ‘Gen-Z vs Millennials’ fight that happened on Twitter last February was the first story on websights. Although generation wars are not new, this is the first time it's happened on the Nigerian Twitter space. Featuring big voices on the platform in corporate professionals and influencers alike, the onslaught got everyone's attention for a full week. It was an interesting time to be on social media.

2. Eighteen Years a Secret Featuring Don Jazzy & His ‘E-nlaws’

This is perhaps the most fleeting news of the past year, but it ranks on this list because of its online reach, courtesy of the shock value it possesses. Nigerians couldn't believe their ears (or to be dramatic, eyes) when they learnt that one of the country's most eligible bachelors, Don Jazzy, is a divorcee. Last Easter Saturday, the producer took to social media to reveal his marital status. As soon as this announcement was made, Nigerians flocked his ex-wife’s Instagram page as online in-laws in an attempt to get the used-to-be couple back together. Everyone had fun with it.

This was at the same time that on-air personality, Chinedu Emmanuel popularly known as Nedu Wazobia had a back and forth with his ex-wife, Uzoamaka Ohiri over the paternity fraud she had committed before their separation.

Boma

Nedu Wazobia and Uzoamaka Ohiri As if that was not enough drama to deal with, ex-Big Brother Naija housemate, Tega, who was the only married woman on the show, broadcast her infidelity when she had sexual interactions with fellow housemate, Boma. This became even juicier when her husband Ajmoney, who had just been cheated on, took to his Instagram account to reveal that he had also cheated on his wife, Tega, in their matrimonial home and as a result, it has caused a strain on their marriage.

To roll the credits was controversial actress, Tonto Dikeh and her ex-lover, Prince Kpokpogri. Just like those before him, Kpokpogri took to Instagram to accuse the actress of cheating on him and effectively ending their short-lived affair.

Tonto Dikeh and Prince Kpokpogri The week of September 5, 2021, can be remembered in entertainment history as National Infidelity Week.

3. This Week On Infidelity: Cheetahs Cheat

In life, three things are constant; death, taxes, and drama. Websights has only one job—to keep you abreast with the latter, newspaper joint style. Here's to another year of reactions from social media.

When Annie Idibia called out her husband Tuface Idibia for cheating on her, the internet went berserk—it was one of four cheating allegations that broke out that week.
