COUPLES MAKING US

BURNA

EDITOR’S NOTE

Every year, our anniversary issue clashes with our Valentine’s issue, so we decided to have our Valentine’s issue early. In honour of Valentine’s Day, which is around the corner, we highlight five rumoured or actual couples that have had the internet abuzz with their relationship.

In a world where love and stardom meet, some couples are in the limelight, making us swoon and go, aww. These duos rouse trending headlines, whether from their chemistry, public display of affection, or their being in synch. Although in some cases, we’ll never know if the love we see online is real or staged, like in the case of Burna Boy and Chloe Bailey, we, the onlookers, view them as a perfect couple, so we become fans of the pair.

These couples live their lives differently. While some are private and easygoing, others are loud and extravagant about their relationships, constantly showing admiration for each other on their social media pages. Either way, we can’t help but stay hooked on these couples.

Scroll to pages 8 to 10 to view the internet’s most talked about unmarried couples.

#Unshakable Truths discusses the letter X this week, and X is for Chapter X: The Stories we Don’t Tell. There are many chapters in our lives, and each chapter makes us proud or not so proud. I, for one, know that there are chapters of my life that I wouldn’t even read, let alone read aloud. And we all have those skeletons in our closets that need to stay locked up in that closet, never to see the light of day. The question I asked myself after reading Sally’s stories was, “How long can we put off not reading that chapter?”

Until next week, enjoy your read.

BARREL JEANS

Ways to Style Them

1

PAIR WITH A FITTED TURTLENECK

The loose fit of barrel jeans means that balance is essential when styling them. A fitted turtleneck produces an elegant silhouette and accentuates the jeans’ loose fit. Choose a strong colour to stand out or a neutral turtleneck for a more understated

For good reason, barrel jeans are dominating the fashion world. These fashionable jeans are a style of wideleg denim that is fitted at the waist, has a relaxed fit from the hips to the ankles, and tapers at the bottom. Another name for them is horseshoe or balloon jeans. They provide an effortlessly stylish yet laid-back look, making them the ideal combination of fashion and function. Barrell jeans are versatile enough to be worn to any event, whether you’re dressing for a semi-formal gathering, a coffee date, or a casual gettogether. In this article, we’ll show you six incredible ways to wear barrel jeans so you can boldly embrace this style.

STYLE WITH A CROP TOP AND SNEAKERS 2

Crop tops with barrel jeans are a fashion combination made in heaven. Your stomach is accentuated by the highwaisted style of the jeans, and the crop top gives off a relaxed, youthful vibe. Choose a fitted crop top to maintain balance, or choose a loose one for a more relaxed, informal vibe. A crossbody bag can be added for an added touch of style, but sneakers are the ideal footwear to maintain a laid-back vibe.

GO MONOCHROME

It’s always stylish to wear monochromatic clothing, and barrel jeans make it simple. Whether it’s a blouse, sweater, or t-shirt, pick a top that matches the colour of your jeans. This results in an elegant and streamlined appearance. Mix light blue barrel jeans with a blue shirt, and add white shoes or nude heels for a sophisticated look. Monochromatic ensembles are ideal when you want to look put together without overthinking your attire.

ADD A BUTTONDOWN SHIRT

A button-down shirt with barrel jeans can create a stylish yet laid-back look. Tuck the shirt in to highlight your waist for a timeless style. It can also be left untucked for a more carefree look. Although a white shirt looks great, don’t shy away from prints or pastel colours if you want to add some personality. Pair this ensemble with loafers or mules for brunch or a laid-back

LAYER WITH A BLAZER

When it comes to clothing, barrel jeans are among the most adaptable items you can own. They are distinctive and offer countless styling options thanks to their unique silhouette. Make the most of your barrel jeans with these styling tips, regardless of your preferred casual, stylish, or 5 3 6 4

A

KNITTED SWEATER

Bulky or fitting knit sweaters look great with barrel denim for cooler weather. You may keep the sweater untucked for a cosier vibe or tuck it in the front for a more laidback yet fashionable look. For a classic style, opt for neutral hues like cream or beige; alternatively, add some colour with a vibrant sweater. For a sophisticated look, pair this ensemble with loafers or ankle boots. To further improve the style, add a structured bag.

These days, oversized blazers are popular, and they look great with barrel jeans. This style exudes an air of effortless coolness and “model off-duty.” For versatility, try for a blazer in a neutral colour like black, beige, or grey; alternatively, go for a bright colour pop. Wear a bodysuit or fitted tank top underneath to counterbalance the oversized pieces. You can create a striking ensemble that is appropriate for an evening event or a dinner

@unshakable.is.a.state.of.mind

Everyonehas skeletons in their cupboard. Everyone has regrets and situations that life has thrown at them, leading them down paths they never imagined walking. These are the chapters we don’t read out loud, the ones hidden behind dark sunglasses, carefully curated smiles and social niceties. So, when we stumble upon someone else’s unspoken story, perhaps we should choose grace — because our own story might be laid bare one day.

Take Onyx, for instance.

She never thought she would find herself in the back of a police car, hands trembling, heart pounding against her ribs as raindrops slid down the window. The bills had piled up faster than she could pay them — her mother’s medical expenses, the mortgage on a house she had worked so hard to purchase, and the neverending weight of survival. The long hours at the diner were not enough, and desperation whispered things to her she never thought she would entertain. It started with a small amount, just enough to cover the mortgage, taken from the register with the quiet promise to return it. But desperation is a slippery slope, and soon, Onyx found herself drowning in stolen bills and guilt.

Then came the inevitable— the quiet suspicion in her

The Stories we Don’t Tell

manager’s eyes, the missing GBP’s adding up, the phone call to the police. Onyx’s heart shattered as reality crashed down around her. She never meant to become this person, yet here she was. A criminal, a thief.

Could you ever see yourself in Onyx’s shoes? Most would say never.

But desperation changes people. It whispers soft reassurances in the dead of night, convincing them that one misstep won’t change everything — until it does.

And then there’s Phoenix.

It all started with a missed flight. Phoenix was never the type to be late, but that day, fate conspired against her — a flat tyre, a traffic jam, and a torrential downpour that soaked her to the bone. Stranded in a coastal town overnight, she wandered into a small bar near the harbour, seeking warmth and distraction. That’s where she met Tex.

He wasn’t just a fleeting stranger; he was a conversation that felt like an escape. They talked about books, art, and dreams unfulfilled. It was harmless, she told herself — until it wasn’t.

Weeks later, Tex reappeared, not as a forgotten memory but as the new consultant on her firm’s biggest project. Every interaction, every lingering glance carried the weight of something unspoken. Phoenix loved her husband, but after years of routine and silent discontent, Tex made her feel seen. What started as friendly exchanges turned into stolen moments, the kind that tiptoes too close to the edge.

Then came the unravelling.

An oversight in the project’s finances put Phoenix in an impossible situation. Fixing it meant bending the rules, just a little altering a document to buy some time. She told herself it was harmless, temporary, but Tex saw the desperation in her eyes. ‘Tell them before they find out,’ he warned. But she couldn’t. Her career, her reputation, her marriage — everything was at stake.

And so, she asked him to stay silent.

Her husband found the altered document before anyone else did. The confrontation was quiet but devastating. And in that moment, Phoenix realised it wasn’t the almost-affair with Tex that shattered her life; it was the accumulation of small choices, each one leading her further from the person she believed herself to be.

Would you ever see yourself in Phoenix’s position? Most would say never.

But the truth is, you don’t know who you are in certain moments until those moments find you. Love, loneliness, and the weight of responsibility can twist even the strongest convictions into something unrecognisable.

So, when we encounter someone else’s Chapter X — the one they don’t read out loud—perhaps we should withhold judgment. Because life has a way of humbling us all, and the choices we claim we would never make might one day be the only choices we have left.

While setting boundaries with doors and windows is on my todo list, empathy remains, and now, grace. For I know the truth is that I have chapter X’s in my book that I will, at best, whisper occasionally but never read out loud. When someone mistakenly stumbles upon this chapter, I hope they do so with the same grace I hope to practise.

Because everyone has a chapter they don’t read out loud. EVERYONE.

‘See’ you next week.

Oluwatosin “Mr Eazi” Ajibade And Temi Otedola

When love meets luxury and melody, you get Temi Otedola and Mr Eazi—Nigeria’s favourite power couple who serve relationship goals with a side of simplicity and charm. The pair met in London, and sparks flew faster than you could say “Afrobeat.” Since then, they’ve been serving us just the right dose of romance, keeping it sweet, classy, and oh-so-private. Temi, the stylish daughter of billionaire mogul Femi Otedola, and Mr Eazi, the laid-back Afrobeats superstar, may come from two different worlds, but together, they create magic. Their relationship first caught the public eye through subtle hints, from Instagram-worthy vacation shots to cute banter during interviews. But in April 2022, Mr Eazi took things to a whole new level, proposing to Temi during a dreamy getaway. The proposal video? Pure gold. Fans couldn’t stop gushing over their chemistry and the effortless love they share.

What makes these two so relatable? They keep it simple. Whether they’re jet-setting across continents or just vibing with family and friends, Temi and Mr. Eazi show that love doesn’t need to be over-the-top to be magical. They let their bond shine through the quiet moments, proving that true connection beats the glitz and glam any day.

While the world waits (impatiently) for their wedding bells, Temi and Mr. Eazi continue to inspire with their playful and authentic love story. They’re not just a couple—they’re a vibe, a melody, and a billionaire-backed love anthem we can’t stop singing along to.

Together, they form a dynamic duo that emits love and ambition. Their relationship is a testament to the power of shared values and mutual respect. Whether cheering each other on during career milestones or enjoying laid-back moments off-camera, Toni and Taye demonstrate the importance of being each other’s biggest fans. Their candid posts and heartwarming captions give fans a glimpse into their world, showcasing a relationship built on humour, kindness, and unmatched support.

Though they’ve largely kept the details of their love story under wraps, fans can’t help but be inspired by the way they complement each other. Toni and Taye remind us that love thrives when partners embrace each other’s dreams while creating a shared vision for the future.

Priscilla Ojo and Juma “Jux” Mkambala

Priscilla Ojo, the Nigerian actress and influencer, has been in the spotlight for much of her life due to her parents’ fame and her own achievements in the entertainment industry.

As the daughter of Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo, Priscilla has grown up in the public eye, and she’s gracefully carved out her own identity as a social media personality, model, and entrepreneur. While much of Priscilla’s professional life has been documented, her personal life—particularly her relationship with Tanzanian musician Jux—has captured the attention of many fans and the media.

The relationship between Priscilla and Jux has been the subject of significant buzz on social media. The couple has shared glimpses of their love on Instagram, with Jux posting heartwarming pictures of them together and Priscilla expressing her admiration for him. Their chemistry is undeniable, and both have been spotted attending events together, showcasing a dynamic partnership that seems to balance their individual careers and public profiles.

While the couple keeps much of their relationship private, they are often seen supporting each other’s ventures. Jux has been a source of inspiration for Priscilla, and her posts often reflect her affection for him, especially during his musical milestones. Their relationship has sparked conversations about love in the limelight and what it takes to make a public relationship work despite the pressures that come with fame.

Fans continue rooting for this couple, eagerly awaiting more updates on their love story.

Burna Boy and Chloe Bailey

When Burna Boy, Nigeria’s African giant, and American singer Chloe Bailey began sparking rumours of a connection, fans on both sides of the Atlantic couldn’t stop talking. Burna Boy, known for his Grammy-winning hits and magnetic presence, and Chloe, a powerhouse vocalist and one-half of the Chloe x Halle duo, make for an intriguing pair.

Their rumoured romance hints at a dynamic blend of creativity and star power. Fans have speculated about their connection through flirty online interactions and their occasional public appearances. Burna’s laidback yet bold persona complements Chloe’s sweet yet confident aura, making them a couple everyone wants to know more about. Whether they’re truly dating or just having fun with the rumours, their chemistry is undeniable, and fans love seeing two global icons share such an intriguing vibe.

Love stories never fail to capture our hearts, especially when they involve individuals who inspire, entertain, or make headlines. The couples we’ve highlighted—Mr Eazi and Temi Otedotal, Toni Tone and Taye Ogebule, Priscilla Ojo and Juma Mkambala, Burna Boy and Chloe Bailey.—each represent different shades of modern relationships. From power duos thriving in the spotlight to more private connections quietly flourishing behind the scenes, these partnerships reflect love in all its beautiful diversity.

What makes these couples stand out isn’t just their chemistry but also the unique ways they balance their personal and public lives. Whether they’re creating global buzz or keeping things intimate, they remind us that love is a universal language and connection can take many forms.

Whether it’s in the form of unwavering support, playful banter, or moments of vulnerability, these couples have given us plenty to admire.

So, as we swoon over their love stories and secretly whisper, “God when? “let’s remember that their happiness is proof that love, when nurtured, thrives regardless of the limelight. May their stories continue to inspire us all to find our own unique versions of happy ever after.

Thriving in a Changing World

Hybrid Events: Show Up, Even if You’re Virtual

Attending an event remotely doesn’t mean you can slack off. Keep your camera on, dress appropriately, and stay engaged. Virtual attendees who look disinterested might as well not be there. Whether inperson or online, your presence matters.

The Power of Digital Politeness

In 2025, most of our interactions happen online, and how you communicate digitally speaks volumes about you. Responding promptly to emails, keeping texts concise, and avoiding “ghosting” in professional settings are musts. Respect people’s time, don’t expect instant replies, and don’t bombard them with messages. Emojis? They’re great, but overusing them in formal conversations is still a big no.

Respecting Personal Space

Physical boundaries are more respected than ever in this post-pandemic era. A handshake isn’t the default greeting anymore; sometimes, a polite nod or smile is preferred. When in doubt, ask before you hug or lean in for a cheek kiss.

Social norms are evolving faster than ever, and keeping up is no longer optional; it’s essential! As we navigate a world where virtual meetings, social media, and technology shape how we connect, the old-school rules of etiquette aren’t enough. Whether you’re mastering Zoom calls or figuring out when to reply with a meme versus a professional response, new-age etiquette is about blending traditional manners with the quirks of the digital age. It’s understanding how to be polite while scrolling, when to disconnect from screens, and how to balance professional and personal boundaries in a hyper-connected world.

Navigating this fine line can be tricky, but fear not—we’ve got you covered, from the do’s and don’ts of texting to the right way to show appreciation online.

In this week’s living edition, let’s help you explore the essential social norms you need to know to stay ahead in current times and beyond. It’s all about making your mark with style, grace, and being tech-savvy.

Cancel Culture Consciousness

The internet doesn’t forget, and 2025 continues to prove it. Be mindful of what you post online. The memes, comments, or hot takes that seem funny today could easily age badly tomorrow. Before hitting “post,” ask yourself: is this necessary, kind, and worth saying?

Respecting individual choices is vital, whether it’s dietary preferences or accessibility needs. When hosting or attending events, be mindful of accommodations for everyone—this is the gold standard of new-age etiquette.

The unwritten rules of social behaviour are steadily evolving, and embracing them can make you a better friend, colleague, and community member. New-age etiquette isn’t just about avoiding awkward moments; it’s about encouraging respect, understanding, and connection in an everchanging world. By mastering these essential norms for 2025, you’ll stand out and inspire others to do the same. After all, good manners never go out of style—they just adapt to the times.

BEAUTY

Ways to Get Rid of Oily Hair 5

It’s normal for our hair to produce some amount of sebum or oil; it does this as a way to hydrate our scalp and, at the same time, protect our hair. The rate at which our hair produces this oil depends on several factors, like our hair type, hygiene habits, and other lifestyle factors. This natural oil builds up in our hair, especially at the root, giving our hair a slick appearance. The only time to get worried is when your hair gets oilier than it should be. We can all agree that dealing with oily hair or scalp can be frustrating. It can make your hair look or feel greasy and may even irritate your scalp. In this article, we will explore some things you can do to reduce the amount of oil your scalp produces.

3. MAKE USE OF PRODUCTS FORMULATED FOR OILY HAIR

A lot of effort has gone into making hair care products live up to their hype. So, in case your hair care products aren’t cutting it, switch to another one with stronger detergents and one that matches your hair concern. Doing this can help lift oil and leave your hair grease-free.

In most cases, your solution to oily or greasy hair is shampooing up to once a day because it helps remove excess oils, debris, and leftover products from the scalp. On the other hand, if you discover that after washing your hair once a day, it still gets greasy by the end of the day, you might need to play with your washing frequency. Overwashing sometimes can strip our scalp of its natural oils, causing it to produce more oil to rehydrate. In addition to having oily hair, if you tend to have dry skin or a dry, itchy scalp, cutting down on how frequently you wash your hair can help balance your scalp’s oil production.

1. WASH MORE OFTEN, WASH LESS OFTEN 2. CONDITION CAREFULLY

Conditioners can often make our hair look greasy and even cause oils to build up faster. In this case, the best thing to do is to condition just the ends of our hair and be sure to rinse thoroughly.

CONCLUSION

4.CLEAN YOUR BRUSH

Your brush can be full of oils, styling products, and general gunk. Using a dirty brush to brush your hair can make it look dirty immediately after washing. To avoid this, clean your styling tools with clarifying shampoo or gentle soap to remove the buildup. Also, always clean out all loose hair after brushing to keep your brush free of oil and dirt.

5. RINSE WITH APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

When properly diluted, apple cider vinegar can help to remove product buildup, balance scalp pH, and even reduce frizz.

Remember, the oil our hair produces is just part of how our body protects our scalp, and there is nothing dirty or wrong about it. The only time you should get concerned is when it gets oilier than it should. When that happens, these tips should be your go-to to reduce how oily your hair appears. Also, do not hesitate to speak to a dermatologist for more expert advice.

Upper Body Workouts TARGETED EXERCISES

Achieving physical fitness has become a top goal on many people’s personal lists. As much as people want to attain full-body fitness, some individuals take more time targeting a particular part of their body. One popular target part is the upper body, such as the arms, chest, back, and shoulders.

To attain a well-defined upper body, one needs to focus on performing a combination of compound and isolation exercises that target specific muscle groups and be consistent. This week’s gym guide will highlight exercise routines targeting the upper body.

Push-Ups

Push-ups are one of the most versatile upperbody exercises. They primarily target the chest (pectorals), shoulders (deltoids), and triceps while engaging the core for stability. For optimal results, start with standard push-ups and progress to variations like decline, diamond, or plyometric push-ups. Aim for 3 to 4 sets of 15 to 20 repetitions, increasing difficulty as strength improves.

Pull-ups (overhand grip) and chin-ups (underhand grip) are excellent for back and bicep development, targeting the latissimus dorsi, trapezius, and biceps. Beginners can use assisted pull-up machines or resistance bands to work up to unassisted pull-ups. Try for 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 repetitions, gradually increasing reps as your strength improves. Including variations like wide-grip or close-grip pull-ups can enhance muscle engagement.

The dumbbell bench press isolates the chest muscles more effectively than its barbell counterpart by allowing a greater range of motion. It works the chest, shoulders, and triceps, improving stability and balance. Lie on a flat bench, hold a dumbbell in each hand, and press upward until your arms are fully extended. Lower with control and repeat for 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 repetitions. Variations like incline or decline bench presses can emphasize different parts of the chest.

Shoulder Press

Shoulder presses target the shoulders and triceps while engaging core muscles for stability. You can perform shoulder presses seated or standing using dumbbells, a barbell, or a machine. Begin by holding the weights at shoulder height and press upwards until your arms are straight overhead. Return to the starting position and repeat for 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 12 reps. Variations include the Arnold and single-arm press, adding rotation for extra shoulder engagement.

Bicep Curls

Bicep curls are essential for arm sculpting and building upper arm strength. Variants like hammer curls, concentration curls, or incline dumbbell curls allow you to target different parts of the bicep. Start by holding a dumbbell in each hand with an underhand grip and curl the weights toward your shoulders, keeping elbows close to your sides. Aim for 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps, adjusting weight for proper form.

Like every other goal you plan on achieving, consistency is key. Stick to your dream body and watch it become a reality. Also, eat protein-rich diets, rest well, and increase weight to challenge yourself. Implementing these exercises into your routine and maintaining proper form will help you achieve a sculpted, stronger upper body over time.

DOWNTOWN CONFIDENTIAL

The Weight of Why?

That night, when John went on his knee to propose to me, the first question I asked him was, “Why?” Why did he choose me to be his wife, knowing fully well that I didn’t match his standard in any way? Why did he choose me, Ige, and not Amaka, the woman his family wanted him to marry for business purposes? Why did he want to marry me, knowing that my disability would create barriers in our relationship?

Despite all the questions swirling in my mind, he said one thing that eased the fear in my heart: “I love you, Ige, and that’s what matters.”

When he said that, I felt peace within me, and for the first time, I believed he knew what he was doing.

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t battling low self-esteem because of my disability. I was just a little scared of the unknown. Even while we were dating, people always had something to say about us.

“Are you sure she’ll have the strength to carry your children with those legs of hers?”

“Why are her legs so ugly? Can you deal with that?”

They would ask him these ridiculous questions in my presence, and while those words sometimes stung, John was always there to comfort me. He would remind me of his love over and over again.

Sometimes, I think about the silly mistake that landed me in this situation. If I could go back in time, I would have punched that

school. That was when I noticed I looked different and walked differently, and everyone stared at me.

My teachers didn’t dislike me, and their preferential treatment wasn’t born out of hate for my legs. They were trying to protect me. But being excluded from sports or group activities made me feel like an outsider. Watching other kids play and laugh while I sat alone in the classroom felt like hell.

Some kids laughed at me, and others avoided me. By the time I was eight, I wanted to quit school.

Thankfully, my parents’ love and support kept me going. They pushed me through secondary school and university, and their encouragement made me see myself as someone with value and vision, not a liability.

One thing led to another, and I met John. We became friends, then lovers. Everything happened so fast that I only realised how serious it was when he proposed. John was the son of one of Lagos’ most renowned oil tycoons. My parents were nothing compared to his. But John didn’t care, even though his family was against us.

We had a quiet wedding in Lagos and honeymooned in the Maldives. Those were the happiest days of my life. John treated me like a queen, and I felt like I was on top of the world. But everything went sour six months after we returned to Nigeria.

What I feared most began to surface. John grew close to Amaka, and when I asked about their sudden friendship, he said it was purely business, that they needed to meet often to discuss the family’s joint venture. I believed him. I trusted him.

nurse in the face and tormented her until she found a way to fix the damage she caused. I wasn’t born with anisomelia. My parents told me I developed the condition after receiving the wrong vaccine during the third stage of my immunisation as a baby.

My parents were furious. They fought the hospital, but the damage was done. There was no going back. I would have to live with it for the rest of my life.

Growing up, I didn’t know anything was wrong with me until I entered primary

But soon, he stopped taking me to events and awards ceremonies. Instead, Amaka went as his “business partner.” John also prevented me from working. He said it would stress me out and insisted I stay home while he provided for everything. Reluctantly, I agreed. I became a housewife, cooking, cleaning, and being available whenever he came home. It wasn’t what I wanted, but I was determined to endure it until I started my own business and reclaim my life.

But then, I discovered his betrayal.

John wasn’t just close to Amaka; he was having an affair with her, the woman his family wanted him to marry. She was already pregnant.

When I confronted him, he said, “My family forced me into it. But I still love you, Ige.”

I laughed bitterly. “Why?” I asked him.

Why did you promise to love me when you knew you wouldn’t keep your word? Why did you marry me when you knew you wouldn’t fight for me till the end? Why did you look me in the eyes and say I was enough when you knew I wasn’t? Why did you let me dream of forever when you already had one foot out the door? Why did you lie to me, John? Why?”

John stared at me, speechless. His silence answered every question I asked.

I walked away that night. I told myself I couldn’t stay with a man who broke my heart so carelessly. But life had other plans. A week later, I found out I was pregnant. It was too late to leave. Or wasn’t it too late?

Mufasa: The Lion King

Thecircle of life goes on and on and on in Mufasa: The Lion King, a needless furthering of The Lion King mythos, which treads the same waters as this story has already traversed.

This is a prequel and a sequel—the split is about 85/15—to 2019’s The Lion King, the live-action-like photorealistic remake of 1994’s The Lion King. (They couldn’t even bother to differentiate the names?) But it doesn’t turn over any new stones or cover any new ground in The Lion King world, and it’s not clear if there are any new stories to mine from this property. It’s the “Circle of Life” as a flat circle.

Mufasa recalls the tale of Mufasa and Taka, the lion cubs turned brothers turned enemies at the heart of The Lion King Annoyingly, the tale is structured as a story within a story, recounted to young Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter) by Sage Mandrill Rafiki (John Kani), with frequent comic relief interruptions from Pumbaa (Seth Rogen) and Timon (Billy Eichner). That means whenever there’s any momentum in the story, we’re pulled out of it and into the present so a quick joke or two, often with meta-corporate underpinnings, can be told.

Mufasa (voiced early on by Braelyn Rankins, and later by Rebel Ridge’s Aaron Pierre) is separated from his parents, Masego (Keith David) and Afia (Anika Noni Rose), after their land is flooded in a dramatic early scene. He’s rescued by Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and taken in, reluctantly, by Obasi (Lennie James), Taka’s father and the leader of another pride, who warns of Mufasa’s future deception in a bunch of triple underlined dialogue. “The only true bond is blood,” Obasi says, later telling his son, “One day he will betray you; this is what strays do!”

Mufasa is allowed to stay, and he’s raised by Eshe (Thandiwe Newton), and he eventually proves his trustworthiness to his new pride and his loyalty to Taka. But when a lioness, Sarabi (Tiffany Boone), comes between them — ain’t that always the way! — betrayal comes from Taka, who teams up with a gang of outsider lions (led by Mads Mikkelsen’s Kiros) to take down Mufasa from within.

Oscar winner Barry Jenkins, one of today’s most impactful directors, takes on screenwriter Jeff Nathanson’s story for what one can only hope is a tradeoff for a future

pass to do whatever in the world he wants to do. He is a rich, stirring, soulful storyteller, but it’s difficult to translate his skillset to talking animals, some of whom, for reasons unexplained, have British accents. (Are the lions from England?)

Further, there are often simple, basic issues with identifying the story’s individual lions and telling them apart — wait, who is that? — which can make the story difficult to follow at times, and the flashes to the present, with Pumbaa and Timon cracking wise, create jarring shifts in tone. Meanwhile the voice acting, across the board, is unremarkable.

The bigger issue is the story is headed exactly where we think it is. Like The Grinch or Wicked, this is another example of revisiting a familiar story to explore a villain’s origin and further explain how they came to be who they came to be. Mufasa gets lead billing, but this is just as much the story of Taka, and how he received that familiar facial marking that would later give him his name. (No spoilers for those who aren’t fully caught up to where this is all headed.)

And because we know where this is headed, Mufasa feels largely perfunctory, with few surprises along the way. Disney treats this source material like it was handed down from on high, like this story has true gravitas and weight, and we’re all beholden to its every turn.

Mostly, it feels driven by profit, one more way to trot The Lion King back out there since it’s a reliable property in a world where reliable properties are squeezed and squeezed again, remade and reimagined so that quarterly earnings reports remain pleasing to shareholders and consumers never have to face the cold without the warm blanket of nostalgia keeping them cosy. This is the emptiness of Intellectual Property culture, where what was once old is now new again, and what was once a hit we’re doomed to forever repeat.

Mufasa — which opens with a tribute to the late, great James Earl Jones, who voiced Mufasa in the original movie and who died in 2024 — is also a musical, but the songs aren’t immediately sticky, although that’s likely to change when they’re heard on repeat once the movie heads to streaming. (Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has a pretty good track record with Disney, did the songs.)

While the animation is very crisp, technology has advanced to the point where realistic-looking talking animals are no longer magical. We expect it, and Mufasa doesn’t push any new boundaries in terms of animated storytelling. Just, stop with the remakes Hollywood!

It mostly feels like the same story through a slightly different lens, a repackaging of something that was just fine the first time around. Let’s hope Jenkins gets something really good out of this deal, and this circle of life once again produces something worth singing about.

I hate these remakes

“I’m not guilty of a crime,” declares Prof Anna Stubblefield in the opening minutes of Tell Them You Love Me. By the end of this featurelength film, you will have decided one way or the other if you agree with that statement. But this is also a story with ambiguities, unknowns, and a central mystery the film cannot answer.

Stubblefield was a professor of ethics at Rutgers University in New Jersey who caused a scandal when she began a sexual relationship with Derrick Johnson, a man with cerebral palsy. Johnson was unable to speak and could not walk unaided. He wore nappies and was spoon-fed.

But Stubblefield claimed that using a controversial method called “facilitated communication” – where she would hold Johnson’s arm as he pointed to letters on a keyboard – she had unlocked an intelligent mind trapped inside a disabled body. Derrick was enrolled at college and appeared on the lecture circuit.

According to Stubblefield, he spoke of wanting to become a writer and move out of his mother’s house. And he initiated a physical relationship, she claimed, by asking him to kiss her and then to take her clothes off. They had sex at his home and on the floor of her office.

Derrick’s brother, John, and mother, Daisy, were horrified by this. Police became involved, and Stubblefield was sentenced to 12 years in state prison for aggravated sexual assault, although she successfully appealed that conviction and accepted a plea to

a lesser charge. She is now free.

The documentary featured extensive interviews with Stubblefield, John and Daisy. The Johnsons were straightforward interviewees – if Daisy was an overprotective mother who still thought of Derrick as her baby and resented Stubblefield’s encroachment, that was understandable – but Stubblefield was a fascinating study. Was she a narcissist and pathological liar, as her ex-husband claimed? Or well-meaning but deluded about Derrick’s abilities (critics of facilitated communication believe that the facilitator is unconsciously guiding the disabled person’s hand)?

Of course, there is a third option—that Stubblefield was correct about Derrick’s mental capacity. That remains a mystery. Other contributors speak for or against the idea, each persuasive in their own way. Regardless, this professor of ethics should have observed ethical boundaries (not to mention consideration for her husband and daughter!).

And to what extent did race and class play a part? John became suspicious when Derrick started expressing preferences for classical music and red wine –Stubblefield’s passions, John said, not Derrick’s. He accused her of having a white saviour complex. It was one of many layers to this thought-provoking film.
