EDITOR’S NOTE

I

woke up to shocking news of Pastor Nomthi Odukoya’s death, and it reminded me how uncertain and fleeting life can be. Shakespeare called it, a brief candle. But Pastor Nomthi was more than a candle, lighting up the lives of many women and children, through her powerful books addressing bullying, gender equality, and other life lessons. I do believe in God, but when a good person dies, I am forced to ask questions, until, like the rest of us, I come to accept it. Reading all the beautiful tributes to Pastor Nomthi has me in my feelings. May she rest in peace and may the family be comforted. This week on THEWILL Downtown, we speak to this year’s first runner-up of popular reality TV programme, Big Brother Naija, Roseline Ejife, better known as Liquorose. She exudes a rather quiet demeanor but in that quietness lies a steely strength and resilience. From her first few weeks in the house, she caught the undivided attention of Nigerians and Africans, gathering quite a fanbase. Now that she is out, the sky is the limit. Read all about her plans on pages 8 through to 10.

A Grown-Up Guide To Uniform Dressing Who says sticking to one aesthetic has to be boring? We explore three ways to have a steady, stylish wardrobe.

BY DAVID NWACHUKWU

THE TIMELESS APPEAL OF BLACK

Zendaya

O

ur clothes are intrinsically linked to our identities. They define the way we live, the way we move and even the way we feel. However, as much as we all love dressing up, thinking about what to wear is often the biggest hurdle to cross. What if we told you, that didn’t have to be the case? Cue in: uniform dressing. Yes, the contraptions we were all forced to wear as kids, but also a new way to approach a super streamlined wardrobe as a stylish grownup! In this piece, we’ll show you just how to build the perfect uniform across different tones, textures and themes. Fall 2021 ZARA Naomi Campbell

PAGE 4

Timeless, transcendent and perfect for everyone, the colour black will forever be king. Whether you’re a minimalist or a maximalist, this hue never gets boring because of the endless possibilities in fabric choices and textures. The best place to start would be a black dress, be it long or little. While Audrey Hepburn’s elegant Givenchy sheath defined cocktail dressing for women in the 1960’s and beyond, legendary supermodel Naomi Campbell’s Azzedine Alaïa’s number updates this aesthetic with silk and velvet accents. Snazz up daytime looks like Zendaya by elevating classics. Just like the Dune star, wearing a pantsuit doesn’t have to be limited to a singular style, instead, opt for a versatile velvet number that can go from day to night.

FASHION A WORLD OF PRINTS We know what you’re thinking, a closet full of prints? Absolutely. Not just an option for breezy weekends, it is an exciting way to brighten up other parts of your daily life. Rethink your workwear options by donning sharply cut silk pantsuits like this mixed media print set from Lisa Folawiyo’s Coll 1 2021. With Banke Kuku’s pyjama sets, super chic work-from-home attire can easily double as a standout cocktail hour look with the snap of a stiletto! The best way to avoid a print clash is to balance out colours and motifs with lighter at the top and heavier at the bottom. Alternatively, you can throw in neutral tone blocks in between, like Rihanna did with this white tank, for a more relaxed look. Print blazers and tops can also be balanced out with denim, as long as the patterns take centre stage.

TOO COOL FOR PREP SCHOOL Make like an upper east side collegiate and go all into this preppy trend. The fundamentals of this wardrobe are classic items like bright-hued polos, tweed jackets/ suiting, crisp white shirts, streamlined denim, sharp blazers and chic cardigans. Like fashion blogger Yewande, shine in a monochrome look perfect for Wimbledon or a day spent sailing. For workwear, make monochrome work by exploring warm, fall tones in single shades. Taking inspiration from Hafsah Mohammed’s cosy look, a caramel skirt with accordion pleats pairs wonderfully with a mocha coloured blazer and faux animal skin accessories.

City Breaks I

t may surprise you to know that I am not one for breaking the rules. I say surprise because everything about me may give the impression that I am a bit of a Junta, and rulebreaking would be part of my genetic makeup. Don’t get me wrong, I am not this way due to some superior moral compass. No, no, no. I learnt very young and the hard way that if I even thought about it, I would be caught. I would need an iron-clad alibi at secondary school because, even if I was not a part of a caper, my name was called first. This is why I never leave my house without a driver’s licence (there was a year of no driving while waiting on my papers), because the Lord knows the police and LASTMA (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority) LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to pull me over anytime I get behind the wheel. Colour me not shook when out of hundreds of thousands of names, NHS Test and Trace team randomly picked me for a surprise visit during my quarantine. They did not catch me slipping, though; in my dressing gown and slippers in the middle of a twohour chicken-in-a-bag commitment, they found me exactly where I was supposed to be. I later got asked to participate in a survey by the UK GOV Office for National Statistics. They asked many questions, so many questions. About how I felt about the handling of coronavirus information by the government and the

PAGE 6

rules in place. Did I trust the information? How easy was it to understand what tests and documentation I needed to travel, et cetera, et cetera? I remember arrogantly saying it was all straightforward if a little tedious on the website. I did manage to show some sympathy for non-English speaking applicants. With the borders opening up and my new YOLO attitude, I decided that a girl had to make a quick trip to visit friends in Como in Italy over the half-term break. This was mainly so my little madam would not die of boredom and basically make that my problem. Booking Easy Jet tickets and my train through Switzerland was easy enough. My darling Christina on the other side was admittedly doing all the heavy lifting and translating things and sending links. I even managed to struggle through the passenger locator form. I was not 100% sure if I needed a fit-to-fly, so I got one anyway because I don’t like to speak English.

We made it to Como without a hitch… OK, fine. I got off at the wrong train station, but luckily Christina knew how to find us! Great food (my girl Christina can throw down), plenty of wine, amazing views, beautiful churches, and my fireplace obsession. This trip was a whistlestop tour of a vacation’s true necessities. We made it off the mountain into Milan for a spot of shopping, more food, of course, and the most fantastic cappuccino with white chocolate. I basically put my lactose intolerance to the test, and I have NO REGRETS. Back to the airport time to head home, I am there in good time and the next thing I am hearing is that my madam has to take a PCR test. Brexit tins! My blood pressure went through the roof. Now we are running through the airport to get a quick test done; Christina is on the line confirming that this is indeed a requirement contrary to other information I used. The queue is about two hours long, and I am sweating like I stole something. But, we make our flight by the skin of our teeth. I humbly apologise to the UK Government Office of Statistics and also change my answer. It is very easy to fall foul of the rules—it is currently all confusion and prayers.

DOWNTOWN CONFIDENTIAL

Tantric-ally

Speaking BY TILEWA KAZEEM

From the moment I could wrap my head around and comprehend all the different notions surrounding the word ‘sex’, I’ve always been very conscious and present in all its swooning energies. I’ll elucidate further. As humans especially in Nigeria, we’ve been conditioned to believe that sex is just for the sake of procreation. In and out; the semen flows through the fallopian tube, locates an egg, and nine months later, a gathering of friends and family are eating at your newborn’s naming ceremony. However, sex is a lot more transcendent than that. As a participant, there’s usually a desired purpose tied to whatever it is we sign up for (even if that thing happens to be sex). And even if in this case the goal is orgasm, there’s no harm in learning a few things along the way. Intercourse is an intimate barter, a giveand-take of emotions, a trade-in of energies between two parties, and not a giveaway. Being able to appreciate and identify each molecule associated with the word and what makes it breathe is the first part of truly enjoying heightened pleasure. Spending time exploring new and mind-awakening ways to redefine the conventional understanding of sexual satisfaction would help unlock new channels of communication. I guess that’s why you’re reading this column and you guessed it, I have something I also had to do a lot of homework on. Introducing Tantric Sex. For those of you who have seen that one episode of The Bold Type where this interesting arm of sex was briefly explored you might already have an idea of what it is. For those who don’t, I’ll advise you don’t feel bad. I was also a tantra virgin some minutes ago. Just stick with me and by the time you’re done with this article, you’d be all caught up with the tantric acts. Tantric sex was born when some ancient Hindu monks got tired of monk-ing at the peak of a mountain and decided to channel those years of meditative experience into sex. (This isn’t the official definition but I like this better) Tantra-based sex emphasizes the importance of being present at the moment to ensure a sensual and fulfilling sexual experience. It is a slow, meditative form of sex where the end goal is not orgasmic eureka, but simply enjoying the body and the journey through intimacy. As it turns out, venturing into tantric techniques has been said to correct a ton of sexual complications.

So you can slow your roll on those premature ejaculation herbal mixtures with hard to pronounce names, we both know they aren’t working. One of the great things about this is it helps strengthen the emotional bond of a couple by allowing them to have more intense, longer, and aware lovemaking. Before I delve into the how-to, I’d like to take you through one of my signature flashbacks. Disclaimer: This isn’t really a tantric sex story but every time I think about it, it just might have been. We’re in this clammy room, illuminated by one of those fluorescent AKT bulbs and we’re in the Yab Yub position (in case you’re wondering what that is, peep the lead image) grinding and by that, I mean, staring-into-eachothers-eyes, totally and utterly drenched in sweat. Every time I think back to that day, it ranks as one of the best sex I ever had because it felt more intimate, a lot more passionate and I lasted longer than previous three-night stands. Could this have anything to do with being in the Yab Yub position with our eyes locked? Now you see why I say it might have well been tantric sex. If you want to have something raw and passionate like that, here are a few things to know;

With tantric sex, attaining sexual euphoria is not the goal. I’ll repeat that for those who didn’t catch that. To orgasm is the target just as penetration is entirely necessary. However, here are some things that get you closer to your tantric objective, one of which is being attentive to the needs of your partner. Spending sexy time with your partner is a time to be attentive. Listen to the sounds your partner makes, feel the warmth of their skin, imagine how you feel, and how they feel. Once you begin to accept your physical sensations and feel them for what they are, they will unlock a whole new level of physical satisfaction that will unravel into something beautiful. Another thing worth paying attention to is body language. Just as you are about to strip down, you’d need to leave that judgemental baggage at the door because it’s not welcome in the bedroom. Insecurities about how you look should be gotten rid of. Let your body lose itself in the sex. Like waves of seawater kissing the shore, surrender your body and ride the pleasure like a surfer trying to catch a wave. That’s the best and only way to have transcendent sex. Breathing also fits the bill when tantric sex is involved because of how dependent it is on meditation. Synchronizing the breath may increase connection and intimacy. Setting aside some time and preparing a comfortable environment for tantric sex, whether with a partner or alone, can help people fully focus on the experience.

Before entering the much-coveted Big Brother Naija reality television show as a contestant, the sixth season first runner-up, Roseline Afije, fondly called Liquorose, had a view of the world that projected chronic pessimism which sadly caused her to miss out on opportunities. The unexpected involvement in the house after a few attempts to get in was the simple elixir that was needed to wean her off the shortage of a will to confront challenges. As soon as she started to make an effort, lots of triumphs came through in the form of several shocking victories during the show. They have inspired Liquorose to renew a belief in herself. Now, she is toeing the line of celebrities who enjoy the exclusive privilege of gracing radio shows, ponderous newsrooms, and evening mixers as a VIP guest. She is charged up and wants equal shots of the same energy that launched her into fame to be delivered to a love-struck army of supporters. DOWNTOWN’s Ayodele Johnson and Kehinde Fagbulé had a conversation with the Big Brother Naija season 6 housemate, about returning to school, fame, and her relationship with Emmanuel.

hat are your thoughts on the dance industry? Is there a recognised community that you know of?

The dance industry is booming right now; we have one in Nigeria, with a head office in Abuja, and it’s growing by the day. It’s a big deal that they have their own audience who enjoys their dances and is willing to dance with them on social media. How did you come about your name? As I said in the house, I’m quite a shy person but with the name Liquorose, my shyness goes away. So, Liquorose is my alter ego. I am more energetic in my liqurose element because that is what helps with my dancing and general lifestyle. Just like my mom said, ‘shame no dey catch drink’, and this is what Liquour represents. There are more video vixens than there are trained dancers. How would you describe the relationship between both professions? Video vixens are dancers because to be a vixen, you must be a dancer or have a basic understanding of how to dance. You must move your body to express the song. A professional

dancer, on the other hand, is someone who dances on stage and choreographs dances, among other things. She’s nothing like a video vixen. A model, on the other hand, is a person who leads by example or who demonstrates the beauty of an art or fashion. As such, a video vixen might not be a professional dancer, but dancing is a prerequisite to be a video vixen. Who are the people you look up to? God and my father are the two people I look up to. Something about my father inspires me greatly. What motivates you? I forge ahead because I’m energized by my tenacity. I mean, I understand where I’m coming from, where I’m looking to move, what I’m leaving behind, and why returning to my past isn’t such a good idea. What will be your dream performance? My ideal performance would be at the Grammys, which would not only be huge, but also extremely cool.

What’s your average day like? I was working with my girls before going into the house - generally working, and getting something to eat at intervals. It’s the same routine right now, but with a little more panache, because I’m still working until 2.0. I barely have time to do things for myself, such as binge watch Netflix. But, to be honest, I’m completely enamored with the drastic change. Did you play with a strategy in the house? What do you think you could’ve done to win? In the house, I didn’t play a strategy; in fact, there was really no game plan or strategy. What you saw in the house was me being myself, a hundred percent genuine, to put it that way.

Do you have any advice for aspiring dancers? Just keep being yourself, keep going; there is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel, or, to put it another way, keep doing what you’re doing as long as you’re aware of the possibility of making progress toward your goals. Most importantly, kindly shrug off any unkind remarks made about you. Take a step back and shrug it off your shoulders. Because you have to pick yourself up a hundred times and affirm that you’re the real deal for those who would make negative remarks about you! As a young girl, when you were asked what career you’d want to pursue when you got older, was dance your first answer? If yes, why dance? If not, what happened and how did a career in dance come into the picture? Oh, my goodness! I was very interested in law because I aspired to be a lawyer. I’d look back at the kid I was and laugh heartily now, because my life has transitioned. So, what happened? Things changed when I realized I needed to step up my daily grind and stay calm.

COVER As far as mental health goes, staying in a house with 23 people must have taken a toll on you psychologically. How hard was it to deal with all the drama and since you’ve come out have you taken the opportunity to recoup and prepare mentally for the ride that is fame? So far, staying in the house and even outside the house has been a positive experience. But in terms of mental health, I’m fine. What do you imagine awaits you in your new, celebrated partnership in the PR industry? To begin with, the primary objective of collaborative relationships, is to reach the public, to enhance the quality of service of these brands including myself and, to initiate a unique prospect. Almost everyone enjoys hearing about Liquorose’s collaborations with well-known brands. It enables us to see that our goals are attainable. However, I can only imagine exquisite splendor; after all, the day only gets better. Are you finding that it is difficult to manage your public life? It’s not challenging at all. I understand the desire to be in the spotlight, but I also understand that being diplomatic makes it easier. What has travelling to other parts of the African continent taught you about your position in the world? You know there’s love in Nigeria, and then you travel to other African countries and experience it; it’s warm, beautiful, and truly amazing. I was blown away! These experiences have taught me to remain true to myself.

How do you feel about the pressure from fans concerning romance? There isn’t any romantic pressure!

Coming into the Big Brother house, You had a substantial amount of followership and devotees, what difference would you say that made to your rather lengthy run in the house? Yes, I had a fan base before having entered the Big Brother house, but I was beginning to think that was one of the reasons why people might not vote for me until the very last day. I was afraid that the public would think I wasn’t good enough or fit to serve, or ‘that she might leave the house early.’ I considered the possibility that the housemates would see me as a competitor and thus put me up for eviction. I actually expected to have the place to myself while I was there. But it was all a figment of my imagination. You racked up quite a few monies from sponsors during the show despite not ending up as the winner. How much did those victories mean to you in the house and after not ending up as the victor? Every task I completed meant a lot to me, especially the ones I won, and I’m grateful I was able to undertake them.

Did your skydiving experience instil a new perspective in you about the planet we live on? Yes, seeing the world through the eyes of a bird gave me a new perspective. Finally, my skydiving adventure instilled courage and confidence in me. Although I acquired that from my stay at the Big Brother house, I tell myself that if I can skydive, I can do anything in the world. Gosh! Africa is a stunning continent. Do you imagine that you now have the financial stability that prompted you to join Big Brother? As it is a new dawn for me, financial stability has just begun. It will continue, and I can feel all the good things coming, even though they are already here. You have fans in Ukraine – are you global now? Well you have it! I’m global, I’m global baby! Whoop!

Ted Lasso I

t’s a premise that could have resulted in broad farce: a folksy American football coach takes a job managing a mediocre English Premier League team. But the Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso, is endlessly endearing in the hands of co-creators Bill Lawrence (Scrubs) and Jason Sudeikis, who also stars as the titular lead. It’s warm, enjoyable, and almost certain to make you smile — the television equivalent of cuddling into a blanket that’s fresh out of the dryer. A gentle international sports comedy isn’t exactly what anybody asked for. In fact, Ted Lasso is based on a series of commercials, a rare type of adaptation that’s historically been mostly a creative dead zone (see Cavemen and Uncle Drew). But the series is serendipitous, the kind of surprisingly sweet, abruptly funny show that could easily be added to one’s happy place rewatch rotation alongside shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation. Much of Ted Lasso’s charm comes from Sudeikis as Ted. The series description leads us to imagine him as a kindred spirit of Friday Night Lights’ Coach Taylor, but he’s a lot goofier and more pathologically earnest. Imagine if Mister Rogers took on some of the silly, unorthodox properties of Zach Woods’ hilarious Silicon Valley character (minus the traumatic backstory), and that’s Ted. Except that he also dashes off Southern American colloquialisms alongside off-the-wall references to everything from Roots to Looney Tunes’ Tasmanian Devil. Although religion isn’t his character’s major motivation, Ted’s got what I like to call Big Youth Pastor Energy, and he somehow transcends ironic distance to get his congregation — well, his team, and us viewers — where he needs them to be. When stern Richmond FC team owner Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) asks him in the first episode if he believes in ghosts, he shoots back, “I do. But more importantly, I think they need to believe in themselves.” To be clear, this is a series that — like Lawrence’s sweet and uproarious show Cougar Town — most viewers will have an urge to resist. The story initially seems burdened by cliches, from the brittle divorcee businesswoman character to the comedic reliance on international culture shock to the teammate ego drama. Yet Ted Lasso is elevated almost instantly by its strong storytelling and a dollop of pathos, not to mention Sudeikis’

sincere delivery of very funny lines. Ted piles on small kindnesses to everyone around him until he wears them down. And this applies to the audience, as well. Unlike Showtime’s Jim Carrey-led series Kidding, which has a similarly sincere protagonist, Ted Lasso doesn’t critically undermine Ted’s affable optimism. Other characters question him and bring him down to Earth, sure, but they’re almost always won over by his thoughtful simplicity, and you likely will be, too. While Sudeikis’ performance is the glue that holds the series together, his teammates on-screen are notable, as well. In addition to Waddingham’s steely Rebecca, the ensemble also includes man-offew-words Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), underappreciated “kit man” Nathan (Nick Mohammed), aging,

gruff soccer star Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), cocky up-and-comer Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster), and Tartt’s model-actress girlfriend, Keeley (Juno Temple). Ted also has an off-screen wife and son, and their absence gives the series a surprisingly heartfelt undercurrent. Ted exists as a testament to the good things that can happen when you open yourself up and just go with the bit until it starts to feel natural. Let someone make cookies for you every day. Read the children’s book someone gave you as a gift. Roll with wordplay games and little dances and silly moments that catch you off guard. Ted Lasso proposes a version of our world where vulnerability, consideration, and genuine emotion — especially among those who are socially conditioned to be closed off — are rewarded in kind. I certainly would love to live in it. Ted Lasso is available to stream on Apple TV+

WELLNESS Prediabetes This is considered the calm before the storm of all diabetes if not well-managed of course. As the name implies pre-diabetes occurs when a higher than normal blood sugar level is first recorded. Although not high enough to Type 2 diabetes but with this, heart, blood vessels, and kidney damage have most likely begun. Serious lifestyle changes are advised as not all prediabetes cases turn to type 2 diabetes.

Gestational Diabetes

World Diabetes Day

This type of diabetes is diagnosed within the 24th to 28th weeks of pregnancy. In some cases, some women experience elevated blood levels. Obesity, lack of activity, and Polycystic ovary syndrome are also suggested causes of gestational diabetes. Bear in mind that gestational diabetes exponentially increases the risks of type 2 diabetes and other pregnancy complications like organ failure, if not properly dealt with. Cases of premature labour and stillbirth have been reported in mothers who developed this health condition within the 24th week of pregnancy. Overweight, breathing issues, and low blood glucose levels are just some of the complications that will befall a child born under these circumstances. It could also lead to an emergency cesarean section(C-section) birth due to the baby being overweight which puts both mother and child in danger.

Symptoms

Gestational diabetes shows minimal symptoms but cases of increased thirst, hunger, fatigue, frequent urination (polyuria) are some symptoms

Type 1 Diabetes With this type of diabetes, the body is unable to make insulin. Insulin is responsible for moving glucose from the blood to the cells and a secondary source of insulin must be introduced into the fatty tissue underneath the skin either through syringes or insulin pens. Type 1 diabetes attracts other medical issues such as damage to blood vessels in the eyes, nerves, and kidneys. Individuals with type 1

WELLNESS diabetes stand a better chance of getting a stroke, or a heart attack. Foot complications are also known to develop due to nerve damage or little to no circulation of blood. Sores and blisters could risk getting infected if left untreated which could lead to the amputation of the toe, foot, or leg in question.

Symptoms

Excessive Thirst This occurs as a result of the kidney producing more urine than usual in an attempt to expel the excess glucose in the body. This loss of fluids triggers the brain to replace these fluids which in turn causes continual dry mouth and thirst. Frequent Urination With elevated blood sugar levels, the body tries to reduce the glucose in the body through urination. People with diabetes produce more than 3 litres of urine daily compared to 1-2 litres. Excessive hunger Due to insulin resistance or the body being able to produce little or no insulin in patients with diabetes, the body is unable to convert glucose to energy, which triggers an insatiable feeling of hunger. Which results in higher blood sugar levels. Gabourey Sidibe

Healthy Tip

Type 2 Diabetes.

Stop Smoking:

Inasmuch as cigarettes are said to help relax they are doing more harm than good. They are addictive, harmful to the lungs, and contribute to tons of medical complications like heart and breast cancer amongst other things. Quitting and going a healthier route will help reduce medical conditions.

REALITY TV A ticket to stardom BY KEHINDÉ FAGBULE

Kim Kardashian, one of the most popular people in the world with 260 million followers on Instagram, is bound to increase by the time you read this. How did she get celebrity status for supposedly having no talent? Reality Television became a genre in the early 90s and achieved prominence in the early 2000s with the success of the series Survivor, Idols, and Big Brother, all of which became global franchises. It is a type of television program that documents supposedly unscripted real-life situations with real-life people appearing in place of professional actors. With names like Timi Dakolo, Omawumi, OC Ukeje, Kcee, Yemi Alade, Niniola, Iyanya, Chidinma, and so on, the list of celebrities who have reality TV to thank for their shot to stardom is simply endless. Although the biggest shows in the country are adaptations of pre-existing western versions, some of the biggest names that we have grown to love in the entertainment industry are a product of reality TV.

The Competition Script

Darey Art Alade is one of the earliest examples. Now arguably the most talented R&B singer in the country, Darey became a star on Project Fame when he emerged as the second runner up on the South African version of the show. His 2013 critically acclaimed ‘Love Like A Movie’ concert was hosted by reality star Kim Kardashian. Another prominent case of reality TVinfluenced stardom is Tiwa Savage’s. Before stepping onto the scene in Nigeria, Tiwa got her first taste of the limelight on the X-Factor; A British singing competition where she made it to the top 24. She won the hearts of Nigerians with her debut single, Love Me, Love Me, Love Me in 2011 going on to achieve huge success with her album. Tiwa has won many awards and accolades in recognition of her success, and she is one of the top voices in African entertainment. Controversial actress, Tonto Dikeh, emerged in the limelight when she became the first runner up on The Next Movie Star in 2005. She is one of the most recognizable faces in Nollywood today with a wide range of filmography.

SPECIAL FEATURE Unlike Ebuka, Uti Nwachukwu got a do-over two years after he returned from his first attempt in the show emptyhanded. He won the fifth installment of the show tagged “All-Stars” as it featured familiar faces from its first four seasons. He has since then moved on to host Africa Magic’s Jara, and now executive produces his own show, Behind The Glam. This is in addition to a brilliant career that has seen him land several modelling roles as a style icon. His acting career also took a turn for the better and has so far featured in several movies since then, including the highly anticipated Aki and PawPaw movie due to premiere this December.

Tonto Dikeh

Uti Nwachukwu The African and subsequently Nigerian adaptation of the Dutch reality TV show, Big Brother, has churned out several celebrities who used the show as a stepping stone to actualise their dreams and have over time remained recognised for what they do. The biggest alumni of the show are Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Uti Nwachukwu. Ebuka was a housemate in the first season. Although he finished in eighth position, he has carved a niche for himself in the entertainment industry and is one of the most successful products of this reality show. He has also risen from being a former housemate of the Big Brother Naija show to a perpetual host of the reality show. Ebuka, who is also a trained lawyer, anchors a court reality TV show, Judging Matters, where he acts as the counsellor to real-life Lagos State judge, Justice Olusola Williams, as they settle real-life disputes in a small claims court. Similar to the western Judge Judy.

The Soap Script Not all reality TV series are competition-based as there have been shows that were scripted to mimic the appearance and structure of soap operas. Such shows often focus on a close-knit group of people and their shifting friendships and romantic relationships. This subgenre has witnessed a boom since the 2000s when the American series, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, premiered on the E! cable network in 2007 to massive critical acclaim worldwide. Its unrivalled viewership, shot the cast members to global stardom. Say all you want about lack of talent, living everyday life with a camera crew tailing you looking to milk you for content sounds like work. A gamble not a lot of people in Nigeria are willing to embark upon seeing that the very few soap-opera reality shows are of already big-time celebrities. In 2012, veteran Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde

shared parts of her life with her teeming audience as she debuted her reality TV show, The Real Me. The show broke records with its debut episode receiving the highest viewership on M-NET’s Africa Magic at the time it aired. Omosexy as she’s fondly called is quoted to have said “You will get to see everything. What we are doing is very real. It’s basically my whole life. The parts where I’m taking care of the kids,

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde

the parts where I’m taking care of the home, the parts when I am working, the parts where I’m yelling. It’s crazy. My life is crazy.” Despite the first season being dubbed a success and a second season produced, the show lacked the consistency and longevity to make its mark in the Nigerian entertainment scene. Jim Iyke and Laide Bakare are two other movie stars who got their own reality shows to little or no success.

Downtown visited Villa Monument Hotel and you know this was bound to happen. Within the hospitality industry, comfort, style and customer service are bare minimum expectations. Although the ranking of hotels emphasizes these three metrics, every lodge is expected to provide them at their very core, however, some score bonus points as they deliver these with some aplomb. Guest Lounge

Located in the serene area of the otherwise commercially vibrant Victoria Island, Villa Monument couldn’t have picked a better geographical placement as the quiet nature of the surroundings attests to the hotel’s theme. Its design which was inspired by culture and traditions from across the world is evident from the reception desk. With an array of world-class rooms designed to mirror different cultures such as the ‘Safari Room’ modelled after the Okavango Delta in Botswana to pay tribute to the very best of the African continent and Mother Nature, the ‘Ocean Jewel Room’ which was patterned after a historic island many consider a jewel in the ocean, Zanzibar and the ‘Westminister Room’ built to offer the best of British culture, reminiscent of the iconic Buckingham Palace, but to name a few. The rooms weren’t all designed to look similar to foreign historic places, however. The ‘Ile Ife Room’ is a locally inspired room option that pays homage to our rich Nigerian heritage with the picturesque Enuwa. In addition to the refreshingly diverse room ideas, the hotel features a fitness centre, private garden terrace and an exclusive lounge for guests to relax and unwind, while enjoying a nice selection of drinks and canapés. A conference room perfect for corporate heads is also made available for guests to allow them to handle their businesses with the panache of fortune 500 companies, courtesy of its amenities. The guest lounge is perhaps the icing on the cake with an interior decor similar to that of an open bar, yet very intimate, a large screen television that is reminiscent of something out of a private cinema, lit artificial candles to add a romantic touch and varied exquisite furniture including sofas and cuddler chairs. The minimalist decor gives off a chill masculine vibe while the large aquarium smartly placed by the corner on the ground floor as you walk up to your room makes for an oddly relaxing feel that combines well with the serenity that the hotel area provides thanks to its perfect location. It feels as though Lagos Hospitality knows no bounds when it comes to the level of luxury and comfort it has in its offering as every hotel comes with its unique selling point. However, Villa Monument Hotel, thanks to its aspirational concept and one-of-a-kind setting has earned bragging rights as the perfect destination for unmatched relaxation. Visit them at 9 b Oko Awo Sreet, Victoria Island, Lagos.
