We all crave healthy, radiant skin and, in the process, use skincare products with different ingredients. Unfortunately, not all ingredients work well together, often resulting in breakouts. This week’s beauty page lists five ingredients you should never mix. You’ll find this on page 12.

I was really looking forward to watching Red One, but after reading this week’s review, I’m torn between seeing it and ditching it. I’ll decide on that later. For now, click on the instructions below the QR codes on page 16 to download this week’s playlist. You’ll love it.

Until next week, enjoy your read.

Every Woman Should Know FASHION 6 FASHION HACKS

1. ROLL YOUR SLEEVES THE RIGHT WAY

There is an art to rolling up your sleeves, even though it can quickly transform a formal outfit into a more casual one. Consider the “J. Crew roll” rather than repeatedly folding the cuffs for an easy, clean look. Pull the cuff back until it reaches just below your elbow, unbutton it, and then fold the lower portion of the sleeve up until it meets the cuff. This technique keeps the sleeves in place and produces a chic, laid-back style that’s ideal for brunch with friends or casual Fridays.

Wearing the newest trends and spending hours organising your wardrobe aren’t the only ways to be fashionable. It’s incredible how easy it is to implement some of the most effective fashion tips into your everyday routine. These tricks are excellent additions to any woman’s wardrobe, whether for discovering methods to make your clothes fit flawlessly or for adding a little touch of style. This article will provide six fashion tips every woman should know.

2. USE A BELT TO ADD SHAPE TO LOOSE DRESSES

Sometimes, loose, flowing gowns are so formless that they make you feel like you’re drowning in the fabric. A belt across the waist is a simple method to add structure to your ensemble and draw attention to your body. For a more understated style, choose a thin belt; for a bolder look, choose a thicker belt. Belts of contrasting colours can provide a pop of colour, or you can match the hue to achieve a smooth look.

3.

5.

4. 6. KNOW THE POWER OF TUCKING IN YOUR SHIRT USE DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE FOR WARDROBE MALFUNCTIONS

Your dress might look much better with a simple tuck, which gives your silhouette a clean appearance. When dressing casually, try the “French tuck,” which involves exposing the back of your shirt and only tucking the front into your trousers or skirt. A full tuck is ideal for more structured or formal attire since it draws attention to your waist and creates a neat appearance.

REPURPOSE YOUR SCARF AS AN ACCESSORY

Not only do scarves keep you warm, but they are also very adaptable accessories that can add flair to any ensemble. For a stylish Parisian look, tie a little scarf around your neck. You can also wrap it around your wrist to create a one-of-a-kind bracelet or tie it on the handle of your handbag to add some colour. Large scarves can be worn as tops, skirts, or even shawls for a beach day style.

Double-sided tape can be a lifesaver for keeping off-theshoulder shirts in place or stopping blouse buttons from gaping. With this quick repair, you may feel safe and at ease in any outfit because it’s simple to apply and kind to your skin. You can also use it to mend loose hems or temporarily secure a wrap dress.

INVEST IN NUDE HEELS

Nude heels are a great option if you want to appear taller and create a streamlined appearance. Use a nude colour that complements your skin tone for a seamless impression. This will make your legs appear longer, and you appear taller. In addition to being quite adaptable, nude heels go nicely with almost any ensemble.

CONCLUSION

Fashion doesn’t have to be scary or difficult. By following these easy yet effective tips, you can maximise your wardrobe and improve your style with minimal effort. These tricks are simple to learn and quite effective, ranging from perfectly rolling your sleeves to adding shape with a belt. You will appear effortlessly stylish in no time if you give them a try.

N IS FOR NOSTALGIA

As we delve into defining synonyms, phrases, and ideas that resonate with the #Unshakable state of mind, we’ve been exploring the letters of the alphabet. Over the weeks, sometimes we have gathered a few stories and sometimes focused on a single letter with deeper sentiment. Today, N is for Nostalgia. Stay with me…

Now in my late(ish) 40s, I’ve watched a couple of my childhood friends lose (a) parent(s) over the past few years, an inevitable part of life. This has occupied a significant space in my subconscious, perhaps explaining why I dreamt in flashbacks last night. I was transported back to a time when the world felt simple, and my parents were my heroes.

Growing up, I viewed my parents through a lens of unfiltered admiration, a perspective that largely remains true. My mother, with her resourceful hands, could create magic in the kitchen, turning ordinary ingredients into meals that felt like warm hugs. She remains as saintly as they come. My father, a walking dictionary, was primarily on school-run duty—each trip was an educational experience of its own.

However, that lens began to crack as I transitioned from childhood to adolescence. I started to notice their small imperfections, all stemming from the inherent flaws of being human. They were not the flawless figures I had idolised; they were real, complex beings.

During those tumultuous teenage years, and even into adulthood, I often felt resentment bubble up. How could they not see the world through my eyes? Why couldn’t they understand my struggles? My heart hardened against their imperfections, and I mistakenly believed love was conditional, tied to perfection. I longed for them to be the parents I had imagined, but life had other plans.

As I grew older and became a parent myself, I found myself in their shoes. The sleepless nights with a crying baby, the blank stares while trying to navigate teenage dramas, the moments of frustration when nothing seemed to go right—they were all too familiar. I realised that I wasn’t perfect, either. I stumbled through parenting just as my parents had stumbled through theirs, sometimes making choices that, in hindsight, I wished I could change.

It was in (adultier) adulthood that I began to see my parents in a new light. They had loved me fiercely or the best way they knew how, even when they faltered. The grace they extended to me, the forgiveness for my teenage rebellion and even as an imperfect adult who is still their child, was the

same grace I hoped my children would one day show me. And therefore, I should show them back as a matter of course. This realisation washed over me like a wave of hope: love is not about perfection; it’s about the messy, beautiful journey of growth and understanding. Ultimately, it is the acceptance of imperfection that defines our connections. As I am sure my parents did, I hope that when my children happen upon nostalgic moments such as the ones that have recently plagued my psyche, they will look upon me with nothing but unconditional love, despite a few SMH moments naturally (oops).

Now, as I watch my own children transition into adulthood, I recognise the cyclical nature of life. I embrace my imperfections and those of my parents, understanding that their love was a guiding light through the chaos. Nostalgia swells within me, not just for the idyllic days of my childhood but for the lessons learned through the trials of family life.

The point is this –we are all works in progress, and love, in its truest form, thrives amidst our flaws. As the sun sets in

all its wintery glory, I find myself wrapped in the comfort of memories, inviting and even invoking the flashbacks that will visit me in dreams. I embrace the beauty of nostalgia—imperfect, yet profoundly clear in its definition of love. Take this with you this week - love is unconditional and #unshakable. Love boomerangs.

What feelings have I stirred within you?

‘See you’ next week!

OMOMENE ODIKE

REVOLUTIONISING HUMAN RESOURCES

Overthe years, Nigeria’s human resources (HR) sector has seen tremendous expansion and development. The industry has transformed from the era of manual job applications and conventional recruiting procedures to a vibrant powerhouse propelling economic expansion and innovation. With the advent of digital HR recruitment platforms, companies and job seekers now communicate in a completely new method that is quicker, more effective, and available to a broader audience. In addition to decreasing unemployment and improving workplace productivity, human resource management has made a substantial contribution to the country’s economy by bridging the gap between talent and opportunities.

In the human resources field, Omomene Odike is a shining example of excellence. She celebrates 20 years of professional experience and has significantly affected the human resources field after a successful legal career. She is the CEO and Managing Consultant of U-Connect Human Resources Ltd, one of Nigeria’s leading HR solutions companies. The first digital HR recruitment platform in Africa, Gr8jobsng, was founded under her innovative leadership, revolutionising how businesses and job seekers interact. Odike continues to motivate change and strengthen people and companies all over the continent with her creative approach. In this interview with THEWILL DOWNTOWN’s Executive Director, Onah Nwachukwu, Omomene Odike, discusses her experience, what motivated her to pursue a career in human resources, her contributions to the field, and her outlook on the state of human resources in Nigeria.

Let’s go back to the beginning for a bit. What inspired you to venture into human resources (HR) and eventually establish U-Connect?

The decision to transition from a successful legal career to leading U-Connect Human Resources was not a mere career shift but rather a response to balancing my professional and personal life demands. As an ambitious individual deeply committed to my legal practice and growing family, I found myself at crossroads. The pressures of legal practice were increasingly at odds with my desire to nurture a fulfilling family life, prompting a reevaluation of my priorities. This led to a pivotal decision: to step into the world of human resources by taking the reins of U-Connect. At the time, I envisioned this move as an opportunity to find a healthier balance between my professional responsibilities and personal commitments. However, the reality of entrepreneurship in Nigeria proved to be far more challenging than anticipated. The entrepreneurial landscape was not the idyllic, family-friendly environment I had imagined. Instead, it was a demanding space that required resilience and adaptability, particularly in managing both business growth and family dynamics. Despite these challenges, my journey into HR consulting turned out to be a profound and transformative one. What began as a necessary career shift soon evolved into a passion for empowering others. U-Connect became more than just a company; it became a platform to create meaningful change, helping people secure employment and improve their skills through various initiatives. The decision to focus on HR consulting was not just a professional move but one that aligned with my greater purpose—to make a lasting impact on individuals and communities through innovative employment programs. As U-Connect grew, so did its ability to transform lives. From training and development to preassessment testing, background checks, and HR consulting services, we were able to bridge gaps in employability and support both local and international companies in their talent acquisition strategies. This multifaceted approach has not only positioned U-Connect as a leader in HR consulting but has also allowed us to partner with globally recognised organisations like the UN Global Impact, Unilever, Nestlé, and LSETF, driving change through our collective efforts in the Alliance for Youth NG. Looking back, it’s clear that this shift was not merely a career change, but the discovery of my true calling. What I initially saw as a necessity has become a mission to empower and uplift, turning aspirations into accomplishments and potential into progress. While the path was full of challenges, it has ultimately led to a place of deep fulfillment, where my personal and professional goals align, and where I can make a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Having studied Law, how did your background in Law influence your approach to HR? Has there been anything you could pick from Law to implement in your HR career?

The transition from legal practice to leading an HR company was undoubtedly challenging. Leaving behind the structured environment of Law, I found myself navigating an unfamiliar and demanding terrain. Initially, I struggled with feelings of uncertainty, as I lacked the necessary skills and experience in HR. For the first six months, I questioned my decision daily, overwhelmed by self-doubt and even considering returning to my legal career. The fear of making a mistake was ever-present, and I felt lost without a clear path forward. However, a transformative moment changed everything. During a particularly difficult time, I had an epiphany that I had indeed made the right decision. It was then that I turned to God for guidance, placing my trust in His wisdom and asking for blessings on my new venture. This spiritual surrender provided me with a renewed sense of purpose and the strength to continue. From that moment, I felt supported in ways I hadn’t experienced before. To navigate my new role, I committed

myself to learning and growing. I immersed myself in self-training, research, and handson experience. The steep learning curve was daunting, but it became a process of growth driven by persistence and resilience. Over time, I began to understand the complexities of managing a business and charting a course for U-Connect. My background in Law, though seemingly distant from HR, has had a significant influence on my approach. The analytical mindset I honed as a lawyer has been invaluable in HR, especially in navigating legal aspects of human resources, such as contracts, compliance, and employee relations. Additionally, my legal training has helped me approach challenges with a structured and strategic perspective, ensuring that we operate within the boundaries of the law while striving for organisational excellence. Looking back, this journey has been about more than just transitioning careers—it’s been a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and the willingness to embrace growth. The shift from lawyer to HR entrepreneur has taught me that true transformation comes from being open to learning, adapting, and trusting the process, even in the face of uncertainty.

Starting U-Connect and Gr8jobsng can be described as groundbreaking in Nigeria’s HR industry. What were some initial challenges you faced?

Starting U-Connect and Gr8jobsng was an ambitious undertaking that came with its fair share of challenges. Breaking new ground in Nigeria’s HR industry meant confronting both anticipated and unexpected obstacles from the start. One of the first challenges was the lack of infrastructure and the digital gaps within the industry. Back then, HR in Nigeria was still primarily manual, and the concept of a technology-driven HR solution like Gr8jobsng was unfamiliar territory. Building a digital platform that could handle recruitment and HR services efficiently required extensive research, substantial investment, and a robust tech infrastructure— things that were not easily accessible. We had to build the platform from scratch and invest heavily in technology while educating both job seekers and employers on how to adopt these new digital solutions. Another significant challenge was navigating a market that was initially sceptical of outsourcing and digital HR services. HR outsourcing was not yet widely embraced, and many organisations were hesitant to entrust such a crucial part of their operations to an external provider. Establishing trust with potential clients required persistence, clear communication, and proving the value we could bring. We had to work tirelessly to demonstrate that our approach would not only help them save costs but also improve efficiency and focus on core business functions. Additionally, sourcing the right talent was a constant challenge in the beginning. We needed HR professionals who were not only skilled but also aligned with our vision of transforming the industry. The talent pool in HR was still growing, and finding individuals who could contribute to the innovative, technology-driven approach we envisioned took time and careful selection. Finally, like many entrepreneurs in Nigeria, we faced challenges related to regulation and policy. The regulatory landscape for HR was still evolving, and compliance became a hurdle as we sought to navigate licensing and legal requirements while ensuring our solutions were both effective and compliant. Despite these initial setbacks, we remained resilient, learning from every obstacle and adapting as we grew. Through continuous learning and innovation, U-Connect and Gr8jobsng eventually gained traction, building a strong reputation in the HR space and helping shape the industry. Each challenge became an opportunity to refine our approach and push the boundaries of what HR could achieve in Nigeria.

How did you identify the need for an online HR platform like Gr8jobsng, and what impact has it had?

Identifying the need for an online HR platform like Gr8jobsng stemmed from a keen observation of the gaps in Nigeria’s HR landscape. As U-Connect grew, it became increasingly clear that traditional recruitment processes were time-consuming, costly, and unable to meet the evolving needs of both job seekers and employers. Candidates struggled to access quality job opportunities,

while employers faced challenges finding the right talent efficiently. I realised that there was a pressing need for a digital solution to streamline these processes, making hiring simpler, faster, and more accessible. The impact of Gr8jobsng has been significant. As Nigeria’s first comprehensive online HR platform, it has transformed how organisations connect with potential hires by providing a digital ecosystem where employers can post jobs, screen candidates, and conduct assessments—all in one place. This has greatly reduced hiring timelines and costs for companies, enabling them to make quicker, data-driven hiring decisions. For job seekers, Gr8jobsng has opened doors to a broader range of opportunities, empowering them with tools to enhance their employability and increase their visibility to top employers. Moreover, Gr8jobsng has played a role in bridging the employability gap through various training and assessment tools, which help candidates develop skills relevant to the market. This has been especially impactful in supporting youth employment and addressing the skills gap that often affects employability in Nigeria. Overall, the platform has become a trusted and valuable resource, driving efficiency, inclusivity, and growth in Nigeria’s HR space.

When it comes to creating a legacy, what values or lessons do you hope to pass on to your children through your work?

When it comes to creating a legacy, the values I hope to pass on to my children are rooted in integrity, resilience, service, and faith. First and foremost, I want them to understand the importance of integrity—that success is built on honesty and a commitment to doing what’s right, even when it’s not easy. Integrity in one’s work creates trust, not only in business but in life, and I believe it’s the foundation of any lasting legacy. Resilience is another core value I want them to embody. Through my journey, they’ve seen the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, the challenges and the triumphs. I hope they’ve learned that setbacks are not failures but opportunities to grow and strengthen one’s resolve. The ability to adapt and persevere is essential, especially in a world that constantly changes. Service to others is also deeply important to me. I want my children to understand that our work should uplift and empower those around us, creating a positive impact that goes beyond personal gain. At U-Connect and Gr8jobsng, our mission has always been to transform lives and provide opportunities for others, and I hope this spirit of service inspires them to make meaningful contributions to their communities. Lastly, I want them to value faith—the understanding that success is not solely by our hands but guided by something greater than ourselves. My journey has been marked by moments of surrender, trust, and divine guidance, and I hope they see that faith is not a limitation but a source of strength, grounding, and purpose. Through these values, my legacy becomes not only about building successful businesses but about nurturing a life of purpose, impact, and integrity—one that my children can carry forward, whatever paths they choose.

How do you balance your role as a mother with your demanding career in HR?

Balancing my role as a mother with a demanding career in HR has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of my journey. It requires intentionality, prioritisation, and a deep commitment to both family and work. I’ve learned that balance doesn’t mean giving equal time to every responsibility, but rather giving the right kind of attention to what each area needs in any given moment. One key approach I take is to set boundaries and stay present. When I’m with my family, I focus on truly being with them—listening, connecting, and creating moments together. I make it a point to be fully present, whether it’s at the dinner table, during family outings, or even in everyday conversations. This presence builds a strong foundation, reminding my children that they are always a priority, no matter how demanding work becomes. At the same time, I recognise that my career is

also a significant part of my life and a source of purpose. I approach my work with dedication, and I make sure my children understand the “why” behind what I do. They see that my work in HR is about more than business—it’s about creating opportunities, empowering others, and making a positive impact. This has helped them appreciate my career and understand the values it represents, such as hard work, resilience, and service. Lastly, I rely on support systems and practice self-care to stay grounded. I’ve learned to ask for help, delegate where possible, and surround myself with people I trust, both at work and at home. Taking time for self-care is also essential—it ensures I can show up as the best version of myself in every role I play. Ultimately, balancing motherhood and a career is a continuous process of learning and adjusting. It’s about embracing the journey and giving myself grace along the way, knowing that, at the end of the day, I’m building a life that reflects both my dedication to my family and my passion for making a difference.

What daily routines or practices keep you motivated and grounded as a leader?

My daily routines are the pillars that keep me motivated, grounded and focused as a leader. I start each day with prayer and meditation, taking time to centre myself, reflect, and seek guidance. This quiet moment of gratitude and connection helps set a positive tone for the day and aligns my actions with a larger purpose. Physical exercise is also an integral part of my routine. A morning workout or brisk walk boosts my energy, improves my focus, and reinforces resilience. It’s a way to recharge, ensuring that I can approach challenges with a clear mind and renewed strength. I prioritise planning and goal-setting each morning. Reviewing my tasks and aligning them with my broader vision gives me clarity on my priorities. This keeps me organised and allows me to tackle high-impact tasks first, creating momentum and a sense of accomplishment. Investing in personal growth is another daily practice. Whether through reading, listening to a podcast, or reflecting on my day, I make time to learn something new. Staying curious and open to new perspectives not only motivates me but also equips me with fresh ideas and insights to share with my team. Lastly, I make it a point to connect with others meaningfully. Regular check-ins with my team, celebrating wins, and supporting them in challenges are small yet powerful ways to nurture strong, trusting relationships. And, in the evenings, spending quality time with my family helps me stay balanced and reminds me of my core values and motivations. Together, these routines keep me energised, focused, and purpose-driven, allowing me to lead with authenticity and clarity every day.

Considering it is your 20th anniversary, what are some upcoming projects or goals for U-Connect and Gr8jobsng?

Celebrating our 20th anniversary is a tremendous milestone, and it has inspired us to set ambitious goals and launch new projects that reflect our commitment to innovation and growth. At U-Connect, one of our primary goals is to deepen our impact across Africa by expanding our presence into more countries. We want to bring our expertise in HR solutions, outsourcing, and talent development to markets where high-quality HR support can drive significant business transformation. We’re also focusing heavily on tech-enabled services to streamline HR processes and provide more dynamic, datadriven solutions for our clients. As part of this effort, we’re investing in advanced digital tools and AI-powered systems to enhance our talent matching and employee engagement services, allowing companies to make faster, smarter hiring decisions. For Gr8jobsng, we are working on expanding the platform to offer a more comprehensive range of employability resources. This includes adding new training modules, certification programs, and personalised coaching services for job seekers to improve their skills and increase their marketability. We’re also enhancing the user experience with more personalised job-matching algorithms and mobile-friendly features to reach and serve more job seekers across Africa. Additionally, we’re excited to launch a series of community-focused

initiatives aimed at empowering the youth and fostering entrepreneurship. We plan to partner with educational institutions and organisations to provide workshops, mentorship, and internships that prepare young people for the workforce, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical skills. Ultimately, these projects represent our dedication to creating sustainable, impactful change within the HR industry and beyond. We envision U-Connect and Gr8jobsng as platforms that continue to empower individuals, transform businesses, and contribute to a thriving, resilient workforce across Africa.

How do you visualise U-Connect developing to address the needs of the workforce in Nigeria?

I envision U-Connect evolving as a dynamic, future-focused HR partner that addresses the diverse and shifting needs of Nigeria’s workforce. As we progress, we aim to bridge gaps in employability, foster skill development, and cultivate a more resilient and adaptable workforce prepared for the modern economy. One of our core strategies is to expand our digital platforms to make HR services more accessible across Nigeria, particularly in underserved regions. By enhancing our techdriven recruitment solutions and providing remote access to training, upskilling, and career resources, we’re working to ensure that talent from all backgrounds has access to quality job opportunities and professional development. We’re also prioritising partnerships with educational institutions, tech hubs, and industry organisations to help align academic curricula with industry demands. This means engaging with educators and business leaders to develop targeted programs that equip young Nigerians with the skills employers need today—especially in high-growth sectors like tech, healthcare, renewable energy, and agriculture. In addition, we plan to address the growing demand for flexible work arrangements and freelance opportunities. Recognising the rise of the gig economy,

U-Connect is developing solutions that connect skilled freelancers with businesses looking for project-based or short-term engagements. This approach not only supports individuals who prefer flexible work but also enables companies to access specialised talent on demand. Lastly, we are committed to fostering an inclusive workforce. We aim to support women, youth, and underrepresented groups by providing mentorship, career coaching, and access to networks that can propel their careers. By doing so, U-Connect will continue to empower individuals and strengthen Nigeria’s workforce, ultimately driving economic growth and stability. In every step forward, our focus is on creating value for both job seekers and employers, helping to build a workforce that is skilled, adaptable, and capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly changing world. What advice would you give to young Nigerian entrepreneurs, particularly women, who want to make an impact in HR?

For young Nigerian entrepreneurs, especially women, who aspire to make a lasting impact in HR, my advice is to start with a strong foundation rooted in purpose and resilience. The HR field is about people, so building a career or business in this space requires a genuine passion for helping others succeed, as well as a commitment to creating positive workplace cultures. Firstly, educate yourself and stay curious. HR is evolving rapidly with technology, so take advantage of every learning opportunity, whether through formal education, online courses, mentorship, or hands-on experience. The more knowledgeable you are, the better positioned you’ll be to provide valuable services and adapt to industry shifts. Second, don’t be afraid to think big and innovate. The HR industry in Nigeria has room for disruption, particularly through digital platforms and tech-driven solutions that make HR services accessible and efficient. If you have ideas for improving recruitment, employee engagement, or workforce development, be bold in exploring these avenues. A great example is how Gr8jobsng was born out of recognising a gap in digital job-matching and employability training. For women, embracing resilience and confidence is essential. Challenges will come—whether it’s securing funding, gaining buy-in, or balancing multiple roles. Remember that you belong at the table and that your unique perspective is valuable. Lean on your support system and seek out mentors who can guide you through tough decisions and help you stay focused on your vision. Lastly, stay true to your values and make integrity the foundation of your work. HR is a people-centric field that requires trust and transparency, so lead with honesty and fairness. By doing so, you’ll build a reputable brand and establish strong, lasting relationships in the industry. Ultimately, success in HR is about empowering others and creating workplaces where people can thrive. Keep this vision at the heart of your journey, and let it inspire you as you make your mark on the industry.

Turning Passion Into Profession

Years ago, many professionals wouldn’t be taken seriously when they mentioned what they do for a living.

However, today’s job market has undergone some severe changes from what it was in earlier generations. These days, skills developed from pure passion and creativity, such as photography, are becoming actual careers, are in demand, and are increasingly valuable. Once considered hobbies or side projects, these creative talents can now be transformed into full-fledged, highly soughtafter careers.

Handmade Crafts And Artisan Products

Individuals who enjoy creating handmade crafts, such as jewellery or textiles, as a hobby can now turn this passion into a profitable business. The demand for unique, handcrafted items keeps increasing daily, with many consumers seeking handcrafted products over mass-produced goods. Local craft fairs and online marketing can also help build a loyal customer base.

Interior Design

Some individuals walk into an empty room and immediately know what it needs. They often start by decorating their own spaces. More impressively, they find out what type of person you are and design your spaces so fabulously that it has your personality all over it. People with such natural decorative gifts have found ways to make the most out of it by creating careers as interior designers for homes, offices, and any space you need to design.

Art And Illustration

Many people are naturally gifted with the ability to make realistic drawings of people and objects. These artists and illustrators turn their passion into a profitable career by creating custom artwork that can be turned into digital illustrations and even graphic novels. Unique, visually striking art is constantly in demand in the publishing, advertising, and entertainment industries. Many artists also find success selling prints and merchandise or offering commissioned work through online platforms like Etsy and Behance.

Game Design And Development

Some years ago, informing anyone that you are interested in video games as an adult was met with looks of disappointment, but that is not the case these days. People have a natural affinity for games that makes them so good at them. They learn so fast when playing something new, and these gamers have made it a source of livelihood for themselves. These days, when game designers and developers come up with concepts, characters, and storylines for video games, professional gamers are paid to test out these games before they are fully released into the market, and they are paid handsomely, too.

Voice Acting

It would have sounded silly back in the day when you heard of someone being a voice actor, but that is not the case now. People who have a knack for spoken words and want to tell stories can now professionally lend their voices to animated characters, commercials, audiobooks, video games, and more and now, thanks to the rise of digital media and the demand for diverse voice talent, it has become a growing field.

These career choices show that whatever gifts you have been endowed with are worth developing and making the most of.

BEAUTY

You Should Avoid Combining 5 SKINCARE INGREDIENTS

(1)  RETINOL AND VITAMIN C

Vitamin C helps brighten the skin and shield it from free radicals, while retinol is excellent for antiageing. But these two don’t work well together. Vitamin C is highly acidic, whereas retinol functions best in a neutral or slightly acidic environment. They can counteract one another when combined, which reduces their effectiveness. It is preferable to apply retinol at night and vitamin C in the morning to provide your skin with both advantages without irritating it.

(2) BENZOYL PEROXIDE AND RETINOL

While retinol is well-known for its anti-ageing and acne-fighting qualities, benzoyl peroxide is frequently used to treat acne. However, combining them can cause redness, dryness, and skin irritation. Both substances are highly effective and have the potential to overexfoliate the skin, which could produce an imbalance in the moisture content of your skin. Use retinol at night and benzoyl peroxide during the day, or switch between the two on various days for optimal effects.

Everybody wants the best skincare outcome—healthy, smooth, and radiant skin. Unfortunately, not every ingredient used in skincare works well with another. When you mix ingredients incorrectly, you may have discomfort, breakouts, or the opposite effect of what you were hoping for. Here are five ingredients you should never mix in your skincare routine to maximise its benefits.

(4) AHAs OR BHAs AND RETINOL

(3) BENZOYL PEROXIDE AND HYDROQUINONE

Avoiding combining hydroquinone with benzoyl peroxide in your skin care regimen is one of the most important pieces of advice dermatologist give their patients. When combined, they may have the exact opposite effect of what you intended and cause temporary skin discolouration.

While retinol is well-known for its antiageing properties, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) are commonly used for skin exfoliation. However, combining them can be too damaging to the skin. Both substances exfoliate the skin and increase cell turnover, which, if used excessively, can cause sensitivity, dryness, and irritation. Layering them in the same routine is best avoided. To prevent overstimulating your skin, you can use AHAs and BHAs on days when you are not using retinol.

CONCLUSION

(5) DAPSONE AKA ACZONE AND BENZOYL PEROXIDE

As they say, “You’ll start looking like a carrot if you eat too many of them.” Without eating a single carrot, you may get the same type of orange discolouration on your skin by using topical dapsone and benzoyl peroxide at the same time. Use only one acnetreating substance at a time to preserve your natural colours. Additionally, keep in mind that benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid work well together.

The key to a good skincare routine is figuring out the ideal ratio of complementary substances. Every element on the above list has advantages, but combining them incorrectly can cause more harm than good. Knowing which combinations to avoid will help you customise your skincare regimen to achieve the greatest possible results for your skin without causing needless irritation or harm.

Roasted Turkey

Oneof the most common dishes used to celebrate special holidays is roast turkey and stuffing. This delightful dish is a delicious meal that brings family and friends together to celebrate special days. In this week’s food guide, we will provide a full recipe for preparing the most popular Thanksgiving meal: roast turkey and stuffing.

Ingredients

For The Turkey

• 1 whole turkey (12-14 pounds), thawed

• 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 tablespoon salt

• 1 tablespoon black pepper

• 2 teaspoons garlic powder

• 2 teaspoons onion powder

• 2 teaspoons dried thyme

• 2 teaspoons dried rosemary

• 2 teaspoons dried sage

• 1 lemon, halved

• 1 onion, quartered

• 3-4 garlic cloves, smashed

• Fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, sage) for stuffing the cavity

For The Turkey

• 8 cups bread cubes (day-old or slightly stale

• 1 cup unsalted butter

• 1 large onion, finely chopped

• 2 celery stalks, finely chopped

• 2 carrots, finely chopped

• 3 garlic cloves, minced

• 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped

• 1 tablespoon dried sage

• 1 tablespoon dried thyme

• 1 tablespoon dried rosemary

• 2 cups chicken broth

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 2 large eggs, beaten

Instructions

Preparation

Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Prepare the bread cubes for the stuffing by spreading them out on a baking sheet and toasting them in the oven until they are dry and slightly golden. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes. Remove and let cool.

Making the Stuffing

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, celery, and carrots. Cook until the vegetables are tender, about 8-10 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Stir in the dried herbs (sage, thyme, and rosemary) and cook for another minute. Combine the toasted bread cubes with the sautéed vegetables and herbs in a large mixing bowl. Gradually pour in the chicken broth, stirring to moisten the bread cubes. The mixture should be moist but not soggy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix in the beaten eggs to help bind the stuffing together.

Preparing the Turkey

Remove the neck and giblets from the turkey cavity. Rinse the turkey inside and

out under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, rosemary, and sage. Rub the turkey with the butter mixture, getting under the skin and on top for maximum flavour. Stuff the turkey cavity with the lemon halves, onion quarters, smashed garlic cloves, and fresh herbs. These aromatics will infuse the turkey with flavour as it roasts.

Roasting The Turkey

Place the turkey breast side up on a rack in a large roasting pan. If you have extra stuffing, you can place it in a separate baking dish to cook alongside the turkey. Tie the legs together with kitchen twine and tuck the wing tips under the turkey’s body to prevent them from burning. Roast the turkey in the preheated oven. As a general rule, cook the turkey for

about 15 minutes per pound, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C) when checked with a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh. Baste the turkey with the pan juices every 30 minutes to keep it moist and flavourful.

Final Steps

Once the turkey is fully cooked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for at least 2030 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, making it more tender and flavourful. Carve the turkey and serve it alongside the stuffing. If you cook extra stuffing in a separate dish, make sure it’s heated through before serving.

There you have it, your very own roasted turkey and stuffing to enjoy from the comfort of your home.

Bon Appetit.

6 Tips For Fixing EMOTIONAL DISTANCE IN A RELATIONSHIP

Feeling emotionally distant in a relationship might be difficult. It’s that feeling of having shallow discussions or simply not feeling as connected as you once were. This emotional distance frequently begins slowly and, if ignored, can develop into a complete detachment. However, the good news? You can reestablish that emotional bond. These six straightforward tips will help you close the distance and restore warmth and connection in your relationship.

1. COMMUNICATE OPENLY AND HONESTLY

Effective communication is the foundation of any healthy relationship. Emotional distance frequently results from keeping some feelings, ideas, or experiences to yourself. Set aside some time to sit down with your lover and softly communicate your feelings. Instead of placing blame or accusations, concentrate on expressing your perspective.

2. MAKE TIME FOR EACH OTHER

Spending meaningful time together in today’s hectic environment might be difficult, particularly when obligations to family, job, or other commitments take precedence. Maintaining that emotional bond, however, requires one-on-one time. Establish periods of the week when you two are alone and free from distractions, including phones. It could be as simple as eating together, taking a stroll, or conversing in a calm environment.

3. SHOW APPRECIATION

We occasionally take our spouse for granted over time without even recognising it. Small gestures of gratitude go a long way toward strengthening your relationship. Express appreciation for your partner’s little efforts, such as making coffee in the morning, taking care of housework, or simply being there for you when you need someone to talk to.

4. PRACTICE ACTIVE LISTENING

Most of the time, we only “hear” our partner when they talk to us; we don’t “listen.” Making eye contact, paying close attention to what your partner is saying, and attentively answering their questions are all components of active listening. Making them feel understood goes beyond simply allowing them to speak.

6. REVISIT SHARED GOALS AND DREAMS

5. REKINDLE PHYSICAL INTIMACY

One of the most significant ways we can emotionally connect with our spouses is through physical touch. Emotional connection frequently suffers when the physical aspect of your relationship takes a backseat. Simple actions like holding hands, hugging, or simply a kind pat on the shoulder can restore a sense of connection.

When you and your lover first started dating, you both had high hopes for the future. Returning to these common objectives and aspirations can occasionally aid in rekindling the emotional connection. Discussing your common goals, whether they be career, family, travel, or other aspirations, can help rekindle that sense of unity.

CONCLUSION

Emotional distance doesn’t have to last forever. With simple yet genuine efforts, you can restore the relationship you previously had. Although maintaining a relationship requires effort, with perseverance and dedication, you may regain warmth, intimacy, and a sincere connection.

The

Christmastime action-adventure family fantasy comedy Red One is as overstuffed as a holiday turkey. Much of it whooshes by in a blur of CGI effects that can leave you feeling dizzy. But it’s not all bad, even if it feels more like a joke movie within another movie than it does an actual movie.

Dwayne Johnson, whose movie career to this point has mostly consisted of him playing himself, gives one of his more credible performances as Callum Drift, head of security detail for Santa Claus himself, played by J. K. Simmons.

Callum is hanging up his hat after more than 500 years on the job because he’s finding it hard to believe in the spirit of Christmas anymore; his Naughty List has gotten too long, and all the negativity in the world has beaten him down.

Callum springs into action when Santa Claus is kidnapped, and he teams up with Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans), a hacker who can help track the big guy. This leads Callum and Jack on a journey through various Christmas myths, including a visit to Santa’s brother Krampus (Kristofer Hivju) and his annual Christmas slap-off, as they fight to take down

the Christmas witch, Grýla (Kiernan Shipka), and save the holiday for the entire world.

Red One, which is directed by Jake Kasdan (who did two Jumanji movies with Johnson), feels like it was assembled by committee at a huge group meeting where everyone was encouraged to share whatever was on their minds after being told “there are no bad ideas.” And that it has the inconsequential feel of a streaming movie, even though it’s debuting in theaters, is a distressing sign of the way the two worlds have been mashed together.

Both Johnson and Evans, who have a hilarious lack of on-screen chemistry together, have contributed their share to the discard pile of streaming misfires — Johnson with the wretched Red Notice, Evans with The Gray Man and Ghosted — Red One feels a lot like another one of those.

As it stands, Red One is an overly busy Christmas story that works overtime to cram in as much mythology and worldbuilding as it can. If it would just settle down for a few minutes, it might identify its spirit, but it’s too busy trying to be all things to all people to just be its own thing.

There’s never been a series quite like Arcane, and there might never be again. Based on League of Legends, a wildly successful video game and esports giant with the most generic name imaginable, Arcane: League of Legends is the most expensive animated series ever produced at a total of $250 million. The first nine-episode season took six years to make; the second, an additional three. Visually, it’s only peer is Sony the SpiderVerse films. Dramatically, its only peer is Game of Thrones And, tragically, it’s too good to last.

Arcane is a fantasy drama set in a world divided between haves and have-nots. Sisters Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell) have found themselves on opposing sides of a conflict between the gleaming technocratic city of Piltover and the impoverished and chaotic undercity, Zaul. While this may sound like the setup for an overplayed class war parable, Arcane endows both sisters and both worlds with a novelist’s complexity. Vi is an emotionally wounded warrior who wants to do what’s right but is driven almost entirely by guilt and self-loathing. Abandoned by her big sister as a girl, Jinx was taken in by a gang lord and mastered violence and destruction as a form of play and as a means of winning the approval of her mentor as well as soothing the pain of her childhood abandonment. They have each hurt the other deeply and brought ruin to the other’s lives. If these two can’t make peace, what hope has the world around them?

Within the short span of its first season, Arcane established a sprawling ensemble of soldiers, criminals, politicians, scientists and mystics, each with their own agendas, loyalties and complex web of

relationships. This web only grows more intricate in the second season, though at the expense of clarity. Where the first season took distinct groups of characters and drew them together to a common, cataclysmic point, the second explodes them apart once again, perhaps in too many directions.

Keeping up with the season’s many subplots is a challenge, especially as they each seem to advance at a different pace, and some are back-burnered for extended periods. There is a tremendous amount of story squeezed into the six episodes out as of time of review, with enough distinct story ideas to fill twice as many. It’s hectic but never boring, and the most important character arcs still get time to develop organically.

This story compression may be a consequence of Riot Games reducing their initial order of five seasons to two due to its hefty price tag. Tencent Media pays Riot $5 million per episode to stream the show in China while Netflix pays another $5 million per episode to stream it everywhere else, and that still leaves Riot about $70 million in the hole of production costs. Whatever the effect the show’s popularity and prestige may have had on League of Legends’ microtransaction economy, that’s not sustainable, particularly given the games industry’s current free fall.

But if Riot’s choice was to either cut the show’s length or its production values, they have unquestionably made the right call. Arcane continues to be framefor-frame gorgeous. Every element of the production shows evidence of extraordinary attention and care. The character designs, adapted from League of Legends, are distinct and identifiable even as they change over the course of the story, and are each brought to life with fluidity and specificity. It’s not only the frantic and imaginative

fight sequences that astonish — the attention that goes into faces during dialogue is often just as impressive.

Backgrounds and digital sets, even those used in a single scene, are lovingly rendered in digital paint, and every prop is painstakingly overdesigned to suit the show’s gears-and-pistons steampunk style.

To call this animation “film-quality” is an understatement. Most Western animated films don’t look this good.

Directors Pascale Charrue and Arnaud Delord’s signature touche Fortiche art style applies the best qualities of 2D and 3D computer animation to an aesthetic that simultaneously evokes anime, American comics, and the painterly fantasy art of fantasy novels. This is distinctive enough on its own, but each episode strays from this model at least once, usually for a music video-style interlude that leans into one influence or another.

A montage set to noisy punk rock mimics underground comics, while an emotional ballad backs up a flashback in faux-watercolour.  And outside of these extended stylistic deviations, Charrue and Delord throw in new tricks so that the audience never gets desensitized to

how incredible Arcane looks, minute to minute.

Perhaps this is part of why Riot Games doesn’t see an upside in continuing Arcane past these 18 episodes. As someone who knew nothing about League of Legends before watching and falling in love with Arcane, I still have no interest in League of Legends, a strategy game for which all of this wonderful narrative complexity is merely background. On the other hand, I’m now absolutely in the bag for whatever Studio Fortiche works on next, be it another series or a feature film. I’d be interested in seeing what showrunners Christian Linke and Alex Yee, who had never written professionally prior to Arcane, get up to next. The intellectual property is not the star of the show, and that’s great for the audience but not necessarily for the financiers. But, as tragic as the abbreviation of Arcane might be, it’s a miracle of our modern entertainment economy that it could even exist at all. A video game company invested a ludicrous amount of time and money on what could cynically be framed as a long-form advertisement and wound up with one of the best animated series ever made. That, frankly, is the stuff of Legends
