When I got the call to have Mo Abudu on the cover of TheWill DOWNTOWN, I wasn’t quite sure what direction the interview would go, but it is a candid discussion on her most recent projects and the past decade as a media mogul.

Her new baby, Mo Abudu Films, is committed to telling stories that explore matters of the heart and human conditions. “At Mo Abudu Films, we are dedicated to telling authentic, uncensored stories that explore the human condition and matters of the heart. These are stories that resonate deeply with me, and I believe they have the power to connect with audiences on a profound level. We aim to create narratives that can stand the test of time, stories that will be shared and cherished for generations to come.”

But the conversation wasn’t only about business; it covered family and lifestyle. You can read all about it on pages 8 through 10.

We all have old clothes, yet we don’t want to let them go. You might wonder what you can do with them; it’s pretty simple, and we have all the tips on pages 6 and 7.

I once heard that to help you get over jetlag, you need to spend some time in the sun. We discuss this and some other exercises you can do to help you with jetlag when you travel to a destination with a different time zone on page 15.

I have always been that lady who would wear nude lipstick and never really gave much thought as to what it says about my personality. It turns out we can tell the sort of person you are from the colour of your lipstick, and we discuss six popular colours on page 5.

Don’t miss out on the movie review page; scan the QR codes for a great music selection. I promise you’ll love it.

Until next week, enjoy your read.

The Psychology of Lipstick

What Your Lip Colour Says About You

THE PSYCHOLOGY

Colour psychology, which has a big impact on the psychology of lipstick, is the science of how different colours can affect our feelings, perceptions, and behaviour. Choosing a lipstick shade matches your current mood or character traits. Here are some possible interpretations of your lip colour.

Lipstick is a potent means of self-expression that goes beyond just cosmetics. Your personality, attitude, and the message you want to send the world can all be discerned by the colour of your lips. We explore what six standard lip colours might reveal about you as we delve into the psychology of lipstick.

Pink lipstick exudes a spirit of liveliness, brightness, and impressionable optimism. It implies that you should go through life with a positive outlook and enjoy the little things. People who wear pink are typically upbeat and regarded as approachable and pleasant.

A universal sign of sexiness, power, and self-assurance is red lipstick. Wearing red communicates to everyone that you are in authority and ready to make a bold statement. It’s a colour that exudes charm and zeal, highlighting your assured demeanour.

4.

The berry lipstick represents a preference for the unusual and enigmatic. People who wear this colour frequently have a creative side and appreciate using fashion to express who they are.

The key components of nude lipstick are simplicity, sincerity, and a natural appearance. Choosing nude tones communicates that you value practicality above luxury and are at ease in your skin. It shows a taste for understated elegance and a feeling of earthy realism.

The bold and the fearless should wear dark lipstick, whether a striking black shade or a deep plum shade. It communicates selfassurance and a desire to stand out. People who wear dark lipstick tend to be risk-takers and pioneers in their own right.

6.

A cosy and welcoming colour option for lipstick is coral. It implies sociability, friendliness, and an eagerness to form connections with others. Coralclad individuals frequently exude warmth and friendliness, making them approachable and easy to talk to.

CONCLUSION

Lipstick is a form of non-verbal communication that you can use to convey your personality, emotions, and intentions to the world. Although these meanings are very general, remember that personal style is changeable, and you can choose different lip colours to symbolize various aspects of your multifaceted personality. Therefore, let the hue of your lipstick be your voice in the world of style, whether you’re feeling daring or frivolous.

HOW TO GIVE YOUR OLD CLOTHES A TRENDY MAKEOVER

We all have those special pieces hidden in the back of our wardrobes, patiently waiting to be given another chance to shine. Rather than saying goodbye to your old clothes, it’s time for a wardrobe rebirth! You can update your old favourites into trendy must-haves with a little creativity and DIY magic. Here are six techniques to update your worn-out clothing.

2. PAINT THE TOWN: CUSTOMISED DESIGNS

Letting your inner artist loose allows you to breathe new life into simple t-shirts, jeans, or jackets. Fabric paint and stencils are your new best friends. Make up your own unique patterns, designs, or other visual elements. A basic piece can become a unique fashion statement by adding a pop of colour or a sprinkle of glitter.

STITCH AND EMBELLISH: EMBROIDERY AND APPLIQUÈ

An old pair of jeans, a jacket, or even a purse can be revived with embroidery, which is making a comeback in fashion. Incorporate elaborate floral patterns, geometric shapes, or whimsical motifs to add a fashionable touch to your apparel. Adding texture and flair with appliqués, patches, and sequins is also fantastic.

TAILORING AND ALTERATIONS: PERFECT FIT

An item of clothing may occasionally only require a minor adjustment. Get a qualified tailor or pick up some simple sewing techniques to change how well your clothes fit. Taper pants for a more streamlined appearance, crop tops for a contemporary edge, or shorten a maxi dress to a stylish midi. Your worn-out clothing can be given a completely new degree of style with tailoring.

4.

MIX AND MATCH: NEW COMBINATIONS

Put your old clothes to unexpected uses by creatively combining and matching them. Combine patterns and textures you hadn’t thought of before. You can also layer a blouse under a sleeveless dress or wear a formal skirt and a shirt for a more laid-back look. Finding new, stylish clothing can come through experimentation.

5.

ACCESSORY MAGIC: BELTS AND SCARVES

Your outdated garments can be transformed with the right accessories. Wrap a colourful scarf around the handles of your handbag for a flash of colour, or cinch a flowy dress with a statement belt. Old basics are given new life with accessories.

6.

DYE IT UP: A SPLASH OF COLOUR

With fabric dye, revive worn-out or drab garments. Give a pair of light jeans new life by adding a vivid colour to them, or give a white blouse a lively new shade. Your clothing can also get a fashionable makeover by using tie-dye and ombre techniques.

CONCLUSION

Your closet is a veritable gold mine of outfit possibilities. Don’t undervalue the transforming potential of a little creativity and DIY. These six ways to update your old clothing are your ticket to a fashionable, eco-friendly style. Roll up your sleeves, then let your creativity soar as you give your beloved wardrobe basics a fresh look.

You’ve had a remarkable journey building the EbonyLife brand over the past decade. Can you tell us what motivated you to venture into the creative side of storytelling with Mo Abudu Films?

Thank you for the kind words. It’s been an incredible journey with EbonyLife, but I felt a strong personal passion for storytelling that needed expression beyond my role as a CEO and studio executive. Over the years, I’ve pitched numerous ideas and seen firsthand that only a fraction of these great stories make it to production. I realised the importance of embracing my creative side and giving voice to the stories that truly resonate with me —stories that require the unfiltered freedom of expression.

Your love for stories has been evident throughout your life, from classic black and white films to modern cinema. Can you share how your diverse background, from talk show host to studio producer, has prepared you for this creative venture?

Absolutely. My diverse background has provided a unique perspective on storytelling. From my early days as a talk

VOL 3 NO. 41 • OCTOBER 08, 2023 PAGE 8 THEWILL DOWNTOWN • www.thewilldowntown.com COVER

show host with Moments With Mo, I’ve had a front-row seat to the complexities of humanity. This experience, combined with building a television channel, becoming a studio producer, and establishing a lifestyle brand, has given me invaluable insights into the multifaceted nature of storytelling. These experiences have shaped my approach to Mo Abudu Films, where I intend to tell authentic stories that delve into the human condition and matters of the heart.

You mentioned attending film school at The London Film School in 2017. How did this experience influence your decision to take the leap into writing and directing your first short films?

Film school was a transformative experience for me. It allowed me to immerse myself in the world of filmmaking and gain a deep understanding of the creative process. It gave me the confidence and skills to step onto the creative side and bring my own stories to life. Writing and directing my first short films became a natural progression of my passion for storytelling and my desire to address social issues that are close to my heart.

Mo Abudu Films is your new creative venture. Can you share what kind of stories you plan to tell through this platform?

At Mo Abudu Films, we are dedicated to telling authentic, uncensored stories that explore the human condition and matters of the heart. These are stories that resonate deeply with me, and I believe they have the power to connect with audiences on a profound level. We aim to create narratives that can stand the test of time, stories that will be shared and cherished for generations to come.

What does storytelling mean to you, and what message would you like to convey through Mo Abudu Films?

Storytelling, to me, is a powerful tool for understanding and connecting with the world around us. It’s a way to capture the essence of humanity and reflect it back to the world. Through Mo Abudu Films, I hope to convey the importance of authentic storytelling, unburdened by hidden agendas, and inspire others to share their stories fearlessly. Stories have the potential to shape our perspectives, change our hearts, and leave a lasting legacy. That’s the essence of Mo Abudu Films—stories that matter, stories that endure, and stories from the heart.

Let’s discuss Iyawo Mi(My wife) and Her Perfect Life. Mo Abudu’s Her Perfect Life tells the story of Onajite JohnsonIbrahim, who seemingly has it all yet wants to end her life. What inspired you to explore the theme of the perfect life and its hidden struggles?

Many of us can relate to the concept of the perfect life, and I was drawn to the idea of delving into the complexities that lie beneath the surface. We often assume that those who appear to have it all are immune to struggles, but this film challenges that notion. It was important to me to shed light on the internal battles individuals like Onajite face despite their external success.

In Iyawo Mi(My Wife), you address a very different theme — a husband’s reaction to his wife’s mental health crisis. What inspired you to explore this heart-wrenching subject?

Mental health is a critical issue that affects families and communities worldwide. I wanted to tell a story that highlights the challenges faced by individuals dealing with mental health issues and the ripple effect it has on their loved ones. Iyawo Mi aims to foster awareness and empathy for those going through such difficult situations.

The settings of both films are deeply rooted in Lagos, Nigeria. Can you talk about the significance of this location in your storytelling?

Lagos is a vibrant and dynamic city with a rich cultural tapestry. It serves as a backdrop for both films because it mirrors the complexities of life

itself. Lagos represents a microcosm of society, where diverse stories unfold against the backdrop of urban hustle and bustle. It was essential to capture the essence of this bustling city in the narratives and to clearly show that mental health has no social or economic boundaries. It affects us all.

As a filmmaker, what were some of the challenges you faced in bringing these stories to life, particularly in terms of storytelling and production?

Filmmaking always presents its set of challenges, but these challenges are part of what makes the process so rewarding. Crafting compelling narratives that resonate with audiences requires careful storytelling and attention to detail. Additionally, capturing the raw emotions of the characters, especially in Iyawo Mi, was a delicate but essential aspect of production.

Both films touch on sensitive and thought-provoking themes. What message or impact do you hope these films will have on the viewers?

My hope is that these films spark meaningful conversations and raise awareness about the issues they address. Her Perfect Life encourages us to look beyond the façade of a perfect life and consider the mental and emotional struggles people face. Iyawo Mi prompts us to empathise with individuals battling mental health challenges and the importance of support and understanding within families. With Mo Abudu Films, what can we expect regarding your future projects and storytelling ambitions? Mo Abudu Films is dedicated to telling authentic stories that matter to me, stories that delve into the complexities of the human experience. In the future, you can expect more thought-provoking narratives that explore a wide range of themes and emotions. My ambition is to continue creating stories that resonate deeply with audiences and leave a lasting impact.

Congratulations on your recent appointment as Creatives Champion for the upcoming UK and African Investment Summit being hosted by Rishi Sunak. Can you share what this role entails and your vision for its impact? Thank you very much! As the Creatives Champion for the UK and African Investment Summit, my role is to advocate for the creative industry and highlight its immense potential as an economic driver. I want to emphasise the importance of building skills capacity and improving access to funding within the creative sector across the African continent.

My vision is to foster an environment where the creative industry can scale, thrive, and contribute significantly to economic growth and job creation.

Why do you believe investing in the creative sector is crucial, and what specific benefits can it bring to the UK and African economies?

The creative sector is a powerhouse of innovation, culture, and economic potential. Investing in this sector enriches our cultural heritage and generates economic opportunities. It creates jobs, supports small businesses, and boosts tourism. For both the UK and African economies, a robust creative industry can drive sustainable growth, enhance international collaboration, and promote cultural exchange, ultimately benefiting both regions.

Would you say building skills capacity is a significant part of your role? How do you plan to address the skills gap within the African creative sector, and what impact do you hope this will have?

Addressing the skills gap is a top priority. We have started to address this with The EbonyLife Creative Academy and our partnership with the Lagos State Government. Idris Elba and I are also partnering in this regard. Our aim is to collaborate with educational institutions, industry stakeholders, and governments to develop comprehensive training programs that equip individuals with the skills needed for success in the creative industry across our continent. By investing in skill development, we empower our youth to pursue creative careers, stimulate entrepreneurship, and increase the overall competitiveness of the sector, leading to job creation and economic growth.

Access to funding can be a challenge for creatives. How will you work to improve access to financing and investment opportunities for African creatives?

Access to financing is indeed a significant challenge. I plan to engage with financial institutions, venture capitalists, and philanthropic organisations to create dedicated funding mechanisms for the creative sector. This could involve establishing creative industryfocused investment funds, providing grants, and offering mentorship programs. By facilitating access to funding, we can unlock the potential of countless creative talents across the continent.

Can you elaborate on the role of collaboration and partnerships in achieving your goals as Creatives Champion?

Collaboration and partnerships are at the heart of my vision. I intend to work closely with industry, governments, industry associations, educational institutions, and international organisations to create a holistic ecosystem that supports the creative industry. Together, we can develop policies, initiatives, and programs that foster growth, innovation, and sustainability. The strength of these partnerships will be instrumental in achieving our collective goals.

What message do you have for African creatives, and how can they engage with your efforts to build a brighter future for the creative sector?

To African creatives, I say this: Your talent, creativity, and passion are invaluable assets.

Believe in your abilities, and keep pursuing your dreams. Stay informed about the opportunities and initiatives we are working on to support your growth. Be ready to take advantage of the resources and programs we aim to provide. Together, we can build a brighter future for the creative sector in Africa and make a lasting impact on the global stage.

Mo Abudu, you’re 59 years old and yet look remarkably youthful. Can you share some of your secrets to maintaining such a youthful appearance?

Thank you for the kind words! I believe that a combination of factors contributes to maintaining a youthful appearance. Firstly, I prioritise a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise, a balanced diet. Additionally, I ensure I get enough rest and prioritise stress management. Finally, Overall, self-care and a positive mindset play a significant role in staying youthful.

You’re not only a successful businesswoman but also a grandmother of two. How do you balance your professional commitments with your family life and still manage to look so radiant?

Balancing professional commitments and family life can be challenging, but it’s all about prioritisation and time management. Family has always been a top priority for me, and I make sure to spend quality time with my loved ones. I believe that a happy family life contributes to overall wellbeing.

Can you share any specific beauty or wellness routines that you follow regularly to maintain your youthful glow?

My beauty and wellness routines are quite straightforward. I prioritise skincare, making sure to cleanse, moisturise, and protect my skin daily. I also make an effort to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and I love incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into my diet. Regular exercise is another key component of my routine. Don’t get me wrong, I do fall off the wagon many times, but I know when to get back on!

As a role model to many, what advice would you give to others who aspire to age gracefully and maintain a youthful spirit?

Ageing gracefully is about embracing the journey with positivity and self-love. My advice would be to prioritise your well-being, both physically and mentally. Nurture your passions,

stay active, and maintain a sense of purpose. Surround yourself with positive influences and cherish your relationships with loved ones. And always remember that age is just a number—your spirit remains youthful as long as you continue to pursue your dreams and passions.

What are some of the joys and lessons you’ve learned from being a grandmother, and how has this role enriched your life?

Being a grandmother is one of the greatest joys of my life. It’s a role filled with love, laughter, and endless happiness. My grandchildren have taught me the beauty of simplicity, the joy of discovery, and the importance of cherishing every moment. They’ve enriched my life in ways I couldn’t have

imagined, reminding me of the preciousness of family and the significance of passing down values and traditions to future generations.

Mo Abudu, you’ve mentioned that Lanre Da Silva remains one of your favourite designers. Could you tell us what draws you to her designs and why she stands out in your view?

Absolutely. Lanre Da Silva is an exceptional designer. What draws me to her designs is her unique ability to blend traditional African aesthetics with a contemporary, global appeal. Her creations celebrate African culture and craftsmanship while maintaining a sense of modernity and sophistication. Lanre Da Silva’s attention to detail and commitment to preserving our cultural heritage through fashion truly stand out.

HOW TO LIVE A LESS STRESSFUL LIFE

You probably always run away from anything stressful, but regardless of how hard you try to avoid it, you feel stressed almost every day. This is simply because stress is an unavoidable part of life. You may not be able to prevent it, but you can most definitely manage it. It is unhealthy to let stress build-up, so here are some stress management tips to help you live a less stressful life.

LET IT GO

You may not know this, but holding on to a grudge is slow death, and the person slowly dying is you. The energy that comes with anger eats away at your body, mind, and spirit; everything around you upsets you, and even the easiest activity stresses you out. Every morning, you wake up with a heavy heart, feeling resentful rather than optimistic. This makes living feel like a chore, so stress becomes your most felt emotion. It might interest you to know that you are the only person at a loss. Just let it go, let the grudge go, and watch how your life becomes less stressful and easier to live.

TRY TO SEE THE GOOD IN YOU TOO

Bad things are stressful to look at, so why do you only ever see the bad in you? You should commend yourself more than you condemn yourself. Give you your flowers when necessary. Compliments are highly therapeutic, very energizing, and stress relieving. Give yourself the gift of seeing the good in you, and you will be amazed by how much it helps you combat your daily stress.

DO ONE THING AT A TIME

You can take on more than one activity, but don’t try to do it at the same time; finish with one before diving into another. Trying to do so many things simultaneously to save time will only leave you confused, with unnecessary frustration and zero accomplishments, as you will likely not get anything done. You can make your life less stressful by teaching yourself to focus on one thing at a time. Being busy isn’t why you feel overstressed; it is how you do the things that keep you busy that determines your stress level. Clear your desk of distractions and pick one project to work on.

GET MOVING

Holding on to the past makes it difficult to live in the present. It stresses you out as you are neither here nor there. When you wear past-coloured glasses, you can’t truly experience the present for what it is because you take up a full-time job in comparison, and comparison is the most nerve-wracking activity to do. Do something daily to stay active, and fill your to-do list with activities to help you think less about your past.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CURTAIN

Use Sheer Curtains To Filter Natural Light

Sheer curtains made of voile or linen help filter out bright sunlight while allowing natural light to flood the room, even on the most gloomy days. When it comes to large window curtain ideas, sheer curtains are a great choice. They filter the glare from the sun, and without compromising the light levels in the room, they provide privacy. If you are the type who loves privacy but you still want sunlight coming into your space, then sheer curtains should be your pick.

Use Thermal Curtains To Combat Cold Weather

Curtains are a vital element of home decor that you cannot overlook. They possess the ability to lift a space’s mood, which makes them essential pieces of decor. The curtain varieties are almost endless; they exist in breezy, substantial, ornamental, solid colours, prints, sheer fabrics, and even heavy opaque textiles. While this leaves you with a wide range of options, which is a good thing, it also makes selection confusing and tedious. Here are a few quick tips to help you choose the right curtain.

Use Bespoke Floor Length Curtains With

Bay windows, the most preferred window type for traditional living room ideas, are known for their elegance. To intensify the shape of bay windows, floor-length curtains are the perfect pick as they complement the outlook and create a striking contrast. If you have bay windows in any area of your space, use floor-length curtains with them.

Use Vibrantly Coloured Curtains To Make A Statement

If you want your space to make a statement, use vibrantly coloured curtains. When set against a white backdrop, the bold hue complements other furnishings, draws the eye to the window, emphasizes the natural light in the room, and overall makes the space feel bright and airy. However, such curtains are most suited for larger rooms as it can be overwhelming for a small space.

Thermal curtains are a good way of shutting out cold and increasing the warmness of a space during the cold season by providing an additional layer of insulation. Thermal curtains are not necessarily much needed during warmer days, so all you need to do is open it up or exchange it for sheer curtains.

Choose Curtains Based On How You Can Maintain It

The curtain’s material determines how often it needs to be cleaned, how easily it can be cleaned, and how it should be cleaned. Opt for cotton or synthetic fabric curtains if you are looking for curtains that need to be washed twice a year. They can be machine-washed if they are unlined, but if not, you should give them a quick hand wash. Aside from wool, silk, and sheer curtains, which can be dry-cleaned or hand-washed in cold water, every other pleated curtain must be dry-cleaned. With this, you can identify the curtain type you can best handle. If you don’t want to have any regrets after purchase, go for the curtain you feel most confident using.

Finding Happiness in Unconventional Relationships

Unconventional relationships test cultural norms and expectations and demonstrate that love has no bounds. It takes courage, perseverance, and a commitment to honesty to find joy in these non-traditional relationships, whether they entail same-sex couples, polyamorous unions, or partnerships with people of diverse ages. This article will examine overcoming preconceptions and achieving fulfilment in unconventional relationships. From open communication to self-acceptance, Let’s explore six ways to cultivate happiness and thrive in these unique partnerships.

1.EMBRACINGAUTHENTICITY — CELEBRATING YOUR TRUE SELF

By keeping true to who you are and celebrating what makes you unique, you can lay the foundation of acceptance and understanding that fosters true happiness.

2. BUILDING A SUPPORTIVE NETWORK — SURROUNDED BY ACCEPTANCE

It is critical to have a solid support network of friends, family, and like-minded individuals to find satisfaction in non-traditional partnerships. To feel included and accepted, seek out communities and services that value and support your partnership. Having a positive support system will make you happy and better able to handle criticism from others.

3. EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION — NURTURING TRUST AND UNDERSTANDING

Any successful relationship, especially one with unusual dynamics, must have open and honest communication as its foundation. You may strengthen your bond and find enduring satisfaction by developing trust, upholding transparency, and actively listening to each other.

4. CHALLENGING INTERNALISED SOCIETAL NORMS — CULTIVATING SELFACCEPTANCE

SALAD DRESSINGS THAT TASTE AWESOME

If you love eating healthy, but at the same time you want to eat something tasty, then the salad is a good option for you because it can be, without doubt, a tasty and healthy addition to a balanced diet; this, of course, is if the salad dressing is just as healthy. A salad dressing loaded with unhealthy ingredients mars the purpose of eating healthy. Most store-bought dressings are brimming with added preservatives and artificial flavourings. One good way of ensuring your salad stays delicious and nutritious is by preparing the salad dressing yourself. Here are simple and healthy salad dressings you can make at home that taste absolutely delish!

GREEK YOGHURT RANCH

TRAVEL BETTER

How to beat jetlag

LIGHT THERAPY

Light has a big influence on your internal clock; exposure to it at your destination speeds up your acclimation to the new time zone, but it depends on what time of the day you arrive, so do not rush into it immediately. If your arrival is at night, then it is best you leave the light exposure exercise until the next day. You should also avoid artificial light for your light therapy, except it is a powered lamp. The best light to be exposed to for light therapy is natural light.

Almost everyone enjoys travelling — exploring new places, trying new dishes, connecting with new people. However, feeling jetlagged after a long flight is something no one wants because the fatigue, insomnia, and mood swing that comes with it is just too burdening. That jetlag feeling will go away with time, but you probably don’t have the patience to wait for it to go at its own time because the more it lingers, the more you fall behind your schedule. Here are some tips to help you get over jetlag more swiftly and get back into your routine more smoothly.

QUICKLY FORGET YOUR OLD TIME ZONE

You can’t be at two places simultaneously; you have to pick a side, which should be your current location. Consciously teach your mind to remember that you are in a new place, so ensure you eat and sleep according to your new destination’s time. Your devices will automatically update clocks, but if it is on manual settings, you should reset the time immediately after departure.

DRINK WATER

You probably avoid drinking water because you don’t want many bathroom breaks during travel. You might want to think again about this decision because drinking water helps you manage jetlag symptoms and travel fatigue. Be sure to drink enough water in-flight and also upon arrival.

THE MELATONIN EFFECT

Melatonin is a natural sleep inducer that your body produces. When you travel, your body’s timing of melatonin production might be thrown off, affecting your sleep pattern. When this happens, you can take melatonin supplements to help realign your internal clock, but this has to be done based on a doctor’s prescription so you don’t suffer adverse side effects.

DO NOT SCHEDULE YOUR FIRST DAY

Leave your activity schedule as free as possible for the first day after your arrival. If you do not, you will likely feel jetlagged longer than you should. Freeing up your schedule will help you regulate your sleep pattern quicker, giving you enough time to work on getting yourself back into routine.

MOVIE REVIEW:

The Creator

tragedy intensified by (cliche alert) flashbacks to the sexy couple beach dancing.

In the five years of LA rebuilding, an embittered Joshua has returned to duty to destroy the “Nirmata,” the god-like creator of advanced AI who can end the war but only by destroying all of mankind.

Instead, Joshua finds a robot weapon disguised as a 6-year-old girl. He calls her Alphie, and as played by the insanely adorable Madeleine Yuna Voyles, there is no way for Joshua to do anything but take her side. Besides, his own child would have been her age. You can see where this is going, and that’s not a good thing.

WATCH OF THE WEEK

THE BEAR SEASON 1

The Bear is aptly named. To watch it is to experience something between a huge, enveloping hug and a huge, eviscerating attack.

his dismissal of the fine dining scene as “tweezers and foie gras” is) but also out of loyalty to Michael, whose loss he is grieving almost as much as Carmy is. The Bear is, among many other things, about family relationships and how biological connection can be the least of it.

practical — requires further proof before she will let her guard down. At the other end of the scale, Sydney has to learn that life experience and caution, alongside the ambition and enthusiasm she has in abundance, count for something too.

The artificial intelligence(AI) you fear might be taking over our lives is the surprise hero of The Creator. The sci-fi epic, now only in theatres, presents AI as way preferable to our human propensity toward empathy-destroying cruelty and warfare.

That’s a bold premise. Sadly, director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), who co-wrote the mixedbag of a script with Chris Weitz, buries a potent provocation in a mountain of sentimental platitudes and borrowed inspiration that muffles its impact.

The time is the near future. We’re told that AI has unleashed a nuke that destroyed most of Los Angeles, killing millions. Human error is really to blame. But five years later, AI is outlawed as robots — they’re called simulants — take refuge in the so-called New Asia, where the movie starts looking like Apocalypse Now, a classic Vietnam reference it can’t sustain, not to mention the cringeworthy racial optics.

The heavy plotting stymies the performance of John David Washington as Joshua, an undercover Army operative who’s literally lost an arm and leg in the attack, a loss that requires (irony alert) robotics to make him whole again. He’s also lost his pregnant wife, Maya (Gemma Chan), a

The real villain is the U.S. military, represented by the always electric Oscar and Emmy winner Allison Janney as Colonel Howell. She tells Joshua that Maya is still alive and that he needs to obliterate Alphie before she can destroy their hovering HQ — a death star called the U.S.S. Nomad — that locates and bombs New Asian targets.

Washington and the luminous Voyles invest genuine emotional gravity into the relationship between Joshua and this robot girl child. But even they can’t escape the traps set by a contrived script of deadends. What to make of robot leader Harun (Ken Watanabe) when he claims simulants are not programmed to harm humans? The film frustratingly dodges answers.

Where Edwards triumphs is in his cinematic world building. The Creator is a visual miracle, shot with a poet’s eye by camera master Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty, both parts of Dune). Along with production designer James Clyne, they make this $80 million production look like it costs four times as much.

Edwards explains that instead of building budget-busting sets, his crew travelled to 80 countries, using light cameras to shoot footage that visual effects could be layered onto later. And what do you know, it works like a charm and a way forward to generate blockbusters on a reasonable budget.

From the battles it builds on land, sea and air to the look of Alphie with her human face marked by large ears that open to her wired insides, this movie brims over with stunning images. By the end of it, though, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was massively missing from the film. What a shame that the creators of The Creator never find a way to instil their ambitious passion project with a soul that might have given it wings.

Rating: 6.8/10

The premise is simple – the prodigal returns – and not particularly new. But the execution is everything. Flawless performances, boundlessly beautiful direction and a spare, allusive script, all of which are as good in the quietest moments as the more plentiful loud ones, turn the story into something properly special.

Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White in his first and surely careermaking lead TV role) is a young, awardwinning chef in New York who has come back to his home town of Chicago to run the family sandwich joint after his brother Michael’s suicide.

Michael left the sandwich shop, The Original Beef, to Carmy in his will. He also left the motley crew that had been running the place. They include Michael’s best friend Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), an asshole; sweet, unhurried baker Marcus (Lionel Boyce); and bellicose Tina (Liza Colón-Zayas). Jon Bernthal as Michael appears in brief, heartbreaking flashbacks. Carmy’s one new hire is ambitious sous chef Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), who trained at the Culinary Institute of America and is the only one in awe of — in fact, the only one who understands — Carmy’s talent and reputation as a chef.

You will need antacids to get through The Bear – especially its early episodes. The intensity of a commercial kitchen, from its prepping deadlines to the screaming rush of lunch hour and the need for everyone to know their job and cleave tightly to their duties, is exhaustively and exhaustingly captured.

On top of that, there is the fact that the team’s system is a rickety structure held together with hope and blue plasters. Carmy and Sydney try to bring order out of chaos, but it’s hard to do when the chaos never ends. Richie is resistant to change – partly out of innate assholery (glorious though

It is also a study in psychology. Marcus’s imagination is seized by the vision of improvement that Carmy’s new ways offer. Carmy’s institution of the brigade system used by high-end kitchens to make theirs work efficiently, the explanations of why certain flavours and techniques work better than others, and learning to shout “Corner!”, “Behind!” and “Yes, chef!” so that everyone knows where they stand — all provide a glimpse of another world that intrigues Marcus. He is on board, although not straightforwardly — because nothing and no one in the mass of humanity that The Bear expertly blends is straightforward.

Tina – older, more cynical, more

Part of the genius of this programme is not to make Carmy tortured by his own genius. He is racked by his grief, sure, and — as we slowly uncover his and Michael’s story, which is not fully revealed until a showstopping sevenminute monologue by White in the final episode – by his guilt. But his genius is a harnessed, controlled thing. He doesn’t use it to fuel a monstrous ego or to justify lashing out at underlings, or to do any of the other narcissistic stuff we have come to believe are natural outcroppings of outsize gifts. When he does lose control, in the penultimate episode, he has to work to come back from it. The Bear never loses sight of the graft inherent not only in earning a living but also in being a functioning, semi-decent human being.

The Bear is half-hour gobbets of kinetic, pressurised, propulsive brilliance with occasional moments of stillness that make you see how much has been done in order to serve up something so delicious. This is a show that has been meticulously prepped, simmered, reduced, balanced and eventually plated up to perfection by the creator, Christopher Storer and coshowrunner Joanna Calo. Dig in.
