I love a good murder mystery; they have a way of weaving the plot such that your suspicion of who the killer is is always wrong, and it’s always the least expected person that turns out to be the killer. Our movie page reviews The White Lotus, and it seems to have just the right dose of suspicion, so I look forward to watching it soon.

The Influence of Social Media on Beauty Ideals
Navigating The Era of Filtered Perfection
3. THE INFLUENCE OF INFLUENCERS
On social media, influencers significantly impact how people view beauty. Their recommendations of goods, fashions, and aesthetic practices influence their followers’ preferences and decision-making. It is crucial to understand that influencers’ content is frequently painstakingly planned, carefully edited, and sponsored, producing an untrustworthy appearance of perfection.
4. THE PROLIFERATION OF FILTERS AND PHOTO EDITING
Users can easily change their appearance thanks to the widespread usage of filters and photo editing tools on social media. These techniques blur the distinction between reality and digital manipulation, which help normalise severely modified photos. The continual exposure to filtered content can cause us to be unsatisfied with how we look naturally and to want to fit in with unrealistic ideals.
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
Social media has grown to significantly influence how people see beauty in the modern digital era. Thanks to the growth of platforms like Instagram and TikTok, we are continually inundated with images of beautiful looks, chiselled bodies, and seemingly unachievable beauty standards. In this article, we set out to investigate the significant impact social media has had on beauty standards. Let’s explore how social media influences our impression of beauty, from curated feeds to photo filters, and learn how to survive this era of filtered perfection.
1. THE RISE OF UNATTAINABLE BEAUTY STANDARDS
Unrealistic beauty standards have emerged as a result of social media. Our feeds are dominated by hourglass bodies, beautiful complexion, and perfectly contoured faces, creating an unreachable standard for beauty. These erroneous perceptions of reality brought on by these filtered images might result in low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy.
2. COMPARISON CULTURE AND SELF-ESTEEM
People continuously measure themselves against highly edited and curated content on social media, which promotes a culture of comparison. Insecurity and discontent with our appearance can be bred by this constant comparison, which can negatively affect selfesteem. The quest for unrealistic perfection may harm mental health and general well-being.
5. BODY IMAGE AND BODY POSITIVITY
Social media can influence the impressions people have about their bodies. Despite the growth of body positivity initiatives, there is still a strong focus on achieving a particular body type. The constant exposure to idealised bodies might lead to dissatisfaction with one’s body and reinforce the notion that beauty is limited to specific standards.
6. EMPOWERING AUTHENTICITY AND SELF-ACCEPTANCE
There is a growing trend towards authenticity and self-acceptance amid the impact of social media on beauty norms. Unconventional beauty standards are being questioned, diversity is embraced, and many people promote realistic depictions of beauty. By recognising each person’s individuality and uniqueness, this empowering shift serves as a reminder that true beauty goes beyond filters and carefully maintained feeds.
CONCLUSION
Undoubtedly, social media significantly impacts how we perceive beauty, how we feel about ourselves and how well we are mentally. But to survive in this filtered-perfect world, you must devise a plan of attack. We can take back our power and define beauty on our terms by growing awareness, accepting who we are, mindfully selecting our social media feeds, and looking for honest representation. Let’s not be fooled by the filtered world of social media but rather embrace the true beauty that emanates from within, which is found in our individual qualities, flaws, and selfassurance.

AESTHETIC BOOSTERS
BY IJEOMA EZEANYIKA
Apart from the basics of interior, which includes light, colour, balance, contrast, etc., accessories are essential for taking the design to the next level as they add style and warmth to any space, making it come alive. A simple and basic space can be completely transformed into a fashionable, modern and chic area with the right accessories to make it sleek and elegant. Adding accessories to your interiors gives it a splash of style and trend. It also adds a touch of charisma and personality to the decor, as you can choose accessories that rightly display your personal choices. For any space to be complete, there needs to be harmony, and accessories offer that harmonizing leverage. Interior decorating is simply girding an area with the objects you fancy.
Let’s explore some interior accessories that can help bring that space you dream of to life.
Wall Art
Wall art is one of the many interior decor accessories.
It ranges from canvases to framed prints to other artistic embellishments that hang on a wall. You can opt for a modern or a traditional wall art design. When deciding which wall art suits your space better, consider your room’s theme, colour scheme, and personal style.
Clock
On the one hand, the clock tells the time; on the other hand, it is a requisite decorative accessory for the interior. You can either settle for a traditional grandpa clock or chic-looking modern clocks. A clock sitting prettily on the wall or a desk significantly changes the space’s appearance.
Mirror Vase
A mirror is a great way to brighten up a dull room and make a statement. In interior design, mirrors are functional and aesthetic, as they can be used to create shape, depth, and visual effects. Being creative is a good idea when choosing the mirror for your space.
A vase is an interior accessory capable of transforming any space into an attractive centrepiece by adding a touch of gracefulness. It comes in various shapes, sizes, and styles and can be used in different areas like the living room, dining room, or entryway.
Throw Pillows
A throw pillow helps to increase the outlook of a space. With the right ones, you can brighten up your entire home decor by using them to add colour to your sofas, chairs, and beds. Aside from the aesthetics, they boost comfort, help keep the spine in the best position, and make a space feel cosier and less empty.
Candle
A candle is an idle decorative object. It fits into any interior style and can be combined with all other interior accessories, such as plants, paintings, vases, lamps, books, sculptures, and other options. Lit or unlit, it doesn’t matter; the presence of a candle automatically boosts how you feel about a space as it gives the area a home feeling and a sense of peace, security, and warmth.

Breaking up With Grace
Tips For Ending A Relationship Respectfully
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
Eventhough breaking up is never simple, doing so with decency and grace can lessen the pain and keep both parties’ self-respect intact. Here are tips to help you end a relationship properly, whether it be a romantic one or a close friendship.
4.AVOIDAMBIGUITY AND MIXED SIGNALS
Being transparent is essential. Being empathetic is crucial, but avoid sending out conflicting or false hopes. Explain that you have decided to end the relationship and feel it is in the best interests of the two of you. Be firm in your decision.
3.LISTEN AND SHOW EMPATHY
Emotions run high when a relationship ends. Let the other person express their thoughts and feelings without being interrupted. Even if you don’t share their viewpoint, show empathy by acknowledging their feelings.
2.COMMUNICATE HONESTLY AND DIRECTLY
Open dialogue is essential. Be honest and truthful with your partner about how you feel and why you want to break up. Use “I” phrases to express your feelings and opinions without criticizing the other person. Avoid blaming or fingerpointing.
6.OFFERSUPPORT AND CLOSURE
5.RESPECTBOUNDARIES AND PRIVACY
Give each other time to process the issue after the split. Respect their privacy and refrain from meddling in personal affairs or post-breakup activities. This includes avoiding discussing the breakup details with friends you have online or in person.
1.CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME AND PLACE
Timing matters. Find a place that is both private and welcoming so that you can communicate freely. To avoid adding more stress to an already delicate situation, avoid ending the relationship during significant occasions or in busy areas.
During the period of transition, offer support. Ensure your ex has the chance to seek closure and offer to respond to any queries they may have. But keep in mind that finding closure is a unique path for each person and might not come immediately.
CONCLUSION
To end a relationship respectfully, always be courteous and kind to the other person, even when your emotions run high. You can get through the arduous process of breaking up while maintaining each other’s self-respect by paying attention to these tips.

COVER
How did you find yourself in the acting profession?
I have always wanted to get into the media space since I studied Mass Communication at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. I began hosting and producing television shows. I literally spent my whole life creating written and oral content; I have always been in the game. At the time, I was hosting a television show for Film House called Film House TV show. We would feature actors, movie directors, producers, and the like. So, I was interviewing this director at the time, Mr. Dickson; God bless him. He saw me and was like, “Oh my God, you look like a Halima.” I was dressed in a very catchy and eccentric way that day, and he was like, “This is how a character is portrayed in the script I am producing. Her name is Halima.” From there, he wanted me on the project, which became my debut. The rest, like they say, is history. It got to a point where I had to choose between acting and hosting television shows, as the demand for me as an actor became so much. I had to put my TV hosting gig on hold and became a full-time actor.
Have you always wanted to be an actress?
In a way, I would say my acting career had two phases. The first phase was when I was actively going for auditions but was not so active. So acting was like a side hustle. I had a job that I was doing, so acting was something I wanted to do, but I wasn’t ready to let go of my comfort zone to pursue it. So, at the time, I was comfortable taking smaller roles because I could combine that with my job, and I was in The Johnsons Family series back in the day, and I was playing supporting roles. Then, the second phase was when it was almost like I wasn’t thinking about acting anymore; I was only hosting TV shows and was content with it. The opportunity just came, and I began to land big roles.
Which of the roles you ever played was the easiest for you, and which was the hardest?
I don’t think there is any easy or hard role; I approach each character and each project differently, with a willingness to learn more about the character. I don’t think that I have to project two characters at the same time, and as an actor, it is my role to make sure that you don’t see me in every character I play. So, I take that upon myself as a personal project to find the character and learn more about the character, so the whole process is easy. Each character is a new role for me, and I am always up to the task, willing and eager to deliver and give it my best.
How easy is it to act kissing roles?
When it comes to kissing roles, people always think that we are having fun in Nollywood. But there is nothing fun about kissing different people on screen in front of the cast and crew and faking emotions, acting like you are utterly in love with this total stranger. To be honest, it is not easy to do. But I always try to make sure it is believable, and it translates the emotions it is meant to translate, but it is super awkward, and I would never get used to kissing on set.
Which beauty pageant did you contest in to emerge a beauty queen?
I participated in the Miss Teen Nigeria contest, where I emerged as the winner. I did a bit of commercial modelling before and after I won the beauty pageant. It is something I still do, by the way. Have you ever been a victim of bullying and sex-for-roles in your industry, as claimed by some of your colleagues? My story is different. I think that women and even men, when it comes to demands for sex at work, is something that cuts across every industry. It is not only a Nollywood thing; it happens everywhere, and I dare say that it is overplayed. It is just a part of human existence.
Most of your colleagues are always quick to say that acting doesn’t pay their bills as they have other side hustles going on. Are you one of those actors?
I think it is misinformation when people say that acting doesn’t pay the bills, and people start suggesting other lifestyles to you, like sleeping around. It is very misleading. I don’t know what bills they are paying; I don’t know how many jobs they are booking. But you can actually work as an actor, and by working, I mean you will really work. You can work and live within your means and pay your bills. But there is a challenge when there is pressure as an actor to look a certain way, dress a certain way, or live a certain lifestyle. When you
attempt to live above your means, as with every other thing in life, when you do not cut your coat according to your cloth, that is when you start to hear all these kinds of talks. However, I do have a side business, a beauty studio called ‘Look at Me’. I have always had it, even when I was in television presenting. But now, I have evolved into making skincare products. I am a very entrepreneurial person. I love the process of working with startups. So, you will also see me doing things on the side. I would advise people to have multiple streams of income as individuals. Even Dangote does have multiple streams of income. Acting is very demanding and tasking; it is important to have other streams of income. I cannot emphasise that enough, and it, however, does not go to say that acting does not pay the bills.
Quite a number of entertainers have one vice or the other; they are engaged in drugs, prostitution, etc. We have seen this play out. What do you think is responsible for this?
There is huge pressure and this wave of success that everybody is showing off on social media. Everybody wants to be successful, and nobody wants to put in the work. I don’t know whether it is the glitz and the glam of social media, where we don’t get to see the process, and all we see is the success. So, there is this pressure to be successful on a lot of people, and they are going about it in the wrong way.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to start a career in Nollywood?
Just as I would advise with any other career, I would say that you go for what you want. Go for what you believe in. Give it all you’ve got. Believe in yourself because it is one of those careers, just like every other career where you would be faced with a lot of selfdoubts, where you would get to eat ‘No’ for breakfast, and you still have to come back and believe in yourself and show up each day with great confidence, because you have to be so confident in yourself and in what you’ve got before any other person believes in you.

MASTERING WORK-LIFE HARMONY
Tips For Balancing Career And Personal Life
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
Intoday’s fast-paced world, striking the right balance between personal and professional life can seem impossible. As you attempt to balance deadlines, meetings, and obligations to your family, tension may arise. It’s not difficult to achieve harmony between the two, though. You can move gracefully through this delicate dance with a little bit of preparation and some valuable ideas. We’ll look at six realistic, easy-to-implement tips in this article to assist you in striking a balance between your personal and professional life.
EMBRACE FLEXIBILITY AND REMOTE WORK
With the emergence of remote employment, the distinctions between work and personal life have become more hazy. Accept the flexibility that this gives. Spend the time you would have spent commuting doing something personal. Establish boundaries and preserve your focus by setting up a designated workspace.
1
PRIORITISE WITH PURPOSE
Knowing your priorities is the secret to maintaining a healthy balance. Choose the aspects of your personal and professional life that are non-negotiable to begin with. Even though it could be tempting, be picky about your employment assignments. Take care of yourself, enjoy your hobbies, and spend time with your loved ones. Establish limits and keep in mind that it’s fine to decline jobs that contradict your primary priorities.
3. 5. 4.
UNPLUG AND RECHARGE REGULARLY
Constant connectedness can deplete your energy, making it harder for you to unplug from work. Plan periodic digital detox times during which you turn off all business emails and notifications. During this time, relax, spend time with loved ones, or engage in a hobby. Remember that you need to recharge to maintain your physical and mental health.
PRACTICE SELF-CARE WITHOUT GUILT
Self-care is not selfish; rather, it is a crucial facet of keeping a healthy balance. Whether through exercise, meditation, reading, or simple relaxation, emphasise self-care routines that renew your body and mind. Remember that feeling relaxed and pleased can help you perform better in both your personal and professional life.
MASTER THE ART OF TIME MANAGEMENT
To achieve equilibrium, effective time management is the key. Set realistic goals for both your professional and personal responsibilities to help you plan your day. Use tools like calendars, to-do lists, and productivity software to keep track of your responsibilities. Set aside time for work and adhere to it; avoid staying up late to finish projects.
LEARN TO DELEGATE AND SEEK SUPPORT
One individual cannot take care of everything on their own. In both your business and personal life, learn to delegate tasks whenever you can. Colleagues at work should be given assignments that play to their talents. Consider hiring a professional to handle personal responsibilities like house cleaning or food buying. Don’t be afraid to ask friends, family, or even a professional for emotional assistance if necessary.
6. 2.
CONCLUSION
It’s a tightrope walk to manage a demanding career with a fulfilling personal life, but it is completely achievable with the appropriate approaches. Be flexible and compassionate to yourself along the way, keeping in mind that balance is a dynamic idea that necessitates ongoing modifications. You’ll find yourself not only surviving but thriving in both your professional and personal lives as you learn the art of balancing.

CAREER
THE SLANG EFFECT
BY IJEOMA EZEANYIKA
Slang is a form of language that is not considered formal English. It comprises a group of phrases of words that are very informal and more common in speech than writing. Don’t confuse slang with jargon. Jargon, also known as ‘industry-speak’, is a language that relates to specific professions. Usually, these terms are well-known and used within an industry and not used anywhere else. Examples include legal jargon, computer programming jargon, or media jargon. Slang can help you connect to the people around you. It can create emotions, help you stand out in a crowd, or even provide a sense of belonging as it signifies that you are part of a group or understand what someone else is saying.
Yes, slang can be fun or create a feeling of intimacy - in the proper context; however, using it in formal business and communication can be problematic. Sticking to actual words is generally the best, as it saves you from the issues using slang can bring. If you want your writing or speech to retain credibility, keep your message clear, simple, straight to the point, and devoid of slang. That way, your readers or listeners are more likely to respond how you want them to. Get to know some of the adverse effects of slang.
Confusion
Not everyone can decipher the meaning of certain slangs, so it is improper to assume that the next person will understand the slang just because you do. Do not use it in conversations; it can become a communication noise, creating confusion. If people have to use Google to communicate with you, they will likely not get involved in the conversation.
Risk of offending People
Slang words mean different things to different people, so you should be mindful of using slang words while conversing to avoid stirring up people’s emotions. You might mean no harm within you, but that isn’t the message the other person is receiving. To avoid misunderstanding and conflict, refrain from using slang words.
Unprofessionalism
Practice, they say, makes perfection. If you consistently use slang in your informal conversation, you stand the risk of using it in your formal conversation as well. You might go for an interview, and while you talk, you might spill out some slang, automatically giving the interviewer a wrong impression of you because it shows unprofessionalism. Maybe you are called to give a speech at a very important event; using slang words wouldn’t put you in a good light. Also, including slang in your business copy will make you lose a lot of clients because, in the corporate world, people expect you to act professionally.

THE IMPACT
COSTUME DESIGN ON NIGERIAN CINEMA FASHION IN FILM
OF
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
In film, costume design is crucial since it enhances character development and depth of plot. Nigeria’s thriving film industry, often called Nollywood, presents a rich tapestry of narratives and cultural influences. We examine the impact of costume design on Nigerian cinema in this article, highlighting the blending of style and narrative. From maintaining cultural history to creating character identities, let’s look at ways costume design influences the plot and holds viewers’ attention in Nigerian films.
1. 2. CULTURAL AUTHENTICITY - PRESERVING HERITAGE THROUGH COSTUMES
The unique cultural landscape of Nigeria is frequently reflected in costume design in film. To accurately represent particular tribes and ethnic groups, traditional clothing is painstakingly produced. Examples include the flowing agbada, exquisite gele (head tie), and elaborately beaded garments. To fully immerse viewers in the cultural tapestry of the narrative, costume designers pay homage to Nigeria’s rich legacy by faithfully portraying cultural outfits.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENTPORTRAYING PERSONALITIES THROUGH WARDROBE
Character definition in Nigerian movies is aided by using costumes as a visual language. Each character’s wardrobe— from the style to the colour scheme, reflects aspects of their personality, social standing, and even their progress through the story. Costume design adds depth to characters and makes them more noticeable on screen, whether through a loud and colourful ensemble or a quiet and simple one.

FASHION
3.
HISTORICAL ACCURACY - RECREATING ERAS THROUGH WARDROBE
Nigerian films frequently delve into the nation’s colourful past through exploring historical narratives. By carefully collecting authentic clothing and conducting extensive studies, costume designers play a significant part in accurately replicating historical fashion. Costume design makes for a more engaging storytelling experience and takes viewers to various historical eras by immersing them in the visual realism of the time.
5.
SYMBOLISM AND NARRATIVE SUBTEXTCOMMUNICATING THROUGH WARDROBE
In Nigerian films, costume design frequently uses symbolism and aesthetic cues to convey underlying themes and subtext. Designers deftly convey emotions, plot themes, or character arcs through outfit choices, using everything from minute garment details to colour symbolism. These subliminal cues draw audiences in subconsciously, which adds complexity and mystery.
6.
CULTURAL EXCHANGE AND INFLUENCE - SHAPING FASHION TRENDS
4.
VISUAL SPECTACLE - ENHANCING AESTHETICS AND PRODUCTION VALUE
Nigerian movies’ aesthetic appeal and production value are enhanced by their costume design. The film’s visual appeal is enhanced by elaborate costumes, minute details, and tastefully selected ensembles, which draw spectators in and thoroughly immerse them in the cinematic experience. Costume designers produce a visual feast by paying close attention to every last detail, giving the narrative an extra touch of charm.
Not only has fashion inspired Nigerian movies, but it has also greatly impacted the nation’s fashion trends. Popular movie characters’ distinctive outfits and iconic looks frequently impact outside the cinema, affecting broader cultural trends and fashion choices. The costumes used in Nigerian movies can influence fashion, start discussions, and inspire creativity outside the movie industry.
CONCLUSION
Through the confluence of fashion and narrative, costume design enriches storytelling in Nigerian movies and captivates viewers. Costume designers in Nigerian films make a lasting impression on the industry, whether through preserving cultural heritage or defining character identities. Let’s recognise and appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that brings the characters and stories to life, creating a visual tapestry that connects with viewers and adds to the constantly changing Nigerian film landscape as we celebrate the influence of costume design on Nigerian cinema.

TECH TALK
TECHNIFIED
BY IJEOMA EZEANYIKA
Different forms of technology exist, resulting from people’s desire to find convenient and better ways to get things done. One word to associate with technology is newness, as technology is either about creating something entirely new or discovering a new way of doing something already in existence. Technology is ever-evolving, as new ideas emerge daily to tackle the many challenges that consistently pop up. Expand your horizon with knowledge about some tech developments that have simplified day-to-day activities.
Laser Scarecrow
Research has shown that birds are afraid of the colour green. Laser scarecrow is a high-tech solution that uses green light to protect crops against birds. It is easy to set up and doesn’t cause any inconvenience to humans as they are silent, and the beams aren’t visible to human eyes in the sunlight.
Smart shoe
Smart Bed
A smart bed is an intelligent bed with sensors that incorporate advanced technology to collect data on your sleep patterns, such as heart rate, breathing rate, body movement, and sleep quality. This data is then processed by a built-in computer that analyses the information and adjusts the bed’s settings in real-time, all to enhance the sleep experience. For example, if it detects that you’re snoring, it may automatically raise the head of the bed to help alleviate the issue. If you’re sleeping and it gets too hot or too cold, it may adjust the temperature accordingly to keep you comfortable. A smart bed creates a personalised sleep environment tailored to your unique needs, offering unparalleled convenience and customisation. This can be especially beneficial for couples with different sleep preferences, as each side of the bed can be customised independently. A smart bed is a compelling choice for tech-savvy consumers as it leverages sensors, trackers, and other intelligent features to analyse and optimise sleep patterns.
Electronic Face
The electronic face massager is an innovative device that uses vibration technology to help reduce wrinkles, tightness, puffiness, fine lines, and other signs of ageing to keep the skin radiant and glowing while providing a soothing massage for you to enjoy. With the electronic face massager, you get to enjoy the taste of a spa-like experience from the comfort of your home as it gives you a gentle vibration and pulsing action, which absorbs your skin treatment deeply, helping to relax and revitalise your skin. It has a unique design, which makes it handy and easy to move around with.
With smart shoes, the way you run is about to change forever. The insole of a smart shoe is equipped with several technical components: a gyroscope, which determines the direction your shoe is turned, including rotation as your foot moves while running; an accelerometer, which registers movement and speed; pressure sensors, to measure impact and weight distribution which can help identify potential injury hazards in your running style; GPS, to track your location and routes; altimeter, to track height differences, which is important if you go trail running, or even regularly tackle hilly running routes; a processor that calculates movement patterns from the sensor data and can tell you how to improve your running style and connectivity, usually via Bluetooth, to transmit data to your smartphone. Also, some smart shoes can tighten or loosen your lace to protect your ankles and tendons. Of all the different kinds of shoes, the one where you find this technology is sneakers, piggybacking on the popularity of fitness trackers and the value users place on gadgets that improve exercise routines. A smart shoe is pretty easy to use; all you need to do is charge it up and connect it to a smartphone, and then you can put it on and go.
Virtual Influencer
A virtual influencer is a computer-generated fictional character designed using computer graphics and motion capture technology to resemble real people in realistic settings and used for various marketing-related purposes, most frequently, social media marketing. Virtual influencer is a novel and innovative concept in influencer marketing. Unlike a human influencer who can get into scandals, a virtual influencer upholds a good image and represents the brand positively. You can also customise the virtual influencer to appeal to a targeted audience or specialised interests. They may readily indulge in fantasy, science fiction, or other imaginative scenarios since the limitations of the real world do not constrain them. This creates opportunities for narratives, immersive experiences, and interactive advertising that will grab consumers’ interest and pique their curiosity. Virtual influencers will transform how businesses connect with their audience by utilising technological breakthroughs.

MOVIE REVIEW:
The White Lotus Season 2
marriage is far from ideal. She can’t shake off her ingrained neuroticism, which would be more sympathetic if she wasn’t so passive-aggressive to her assistant Portia (Haley Lu Richardson).
WATCH OF THE WEEK
TOP BOY SEASON 5
There was never meant to be a second season of The White Lotus Mike White’s scathing satire of wealth and privilege was supposed to be a miniseries, but it became such a cultural phenomenon there just had to be more – and the story format was easy enough to adapt.
So, now, welcome to The White Lotus, Sicily. The skies are just as blue, the water is just as sparkling, and the guests are just as insufferable.
A new group of holiday-makers have checked in, and over a week, they will expose their soft, entitled underbellies until one of them – or the staff – is dead.
There’s the Di Grassos, three generations of men with dad Dom (Michael Imperioli), his father Bert (F. Murray Abraham) and son Albie (Adam DiMarco). The family are in Sicily to explore their ancestral roots, but it’s a men-only affair, with the Di Grasso women opting out thanks to Dom’s philandering ways.
Dom wastes no time hooking up with Lucia (Simona Tabasco) and Mia (Beatrice Granno), two enterprising local sex workers who know how to hustle, and they also know how to seduce more than just one Di Grasso.
Also at the resort is the group of marrieds Harper (Aubrey Plaza) and Ethan (Will Sharpe), Cameron (Theo James) and Daphne (Meghann Fahy).
Cameron and Ethan were college roommates but haven’t been super close since. When Cameron invites Ethan and Harper to join him and Daphne on holidays together, Ethan suspects an ulterior motive.
The tensions between flashy fund manager Cameron and newly rich Ethan are obvious, a swirl of existing resentments, envy and judgment. The surly Harper, in particular, isn’t buying Cameron and Daphne’s “perfect couple” vibe.
The only carry-over from the first season is Jennifer Coolidge’s deeply clueless and deeply insecure Tanya, a billionaire heiress who is as unlucky in love as she is self-involved.
Tanya married Greg (Jon Gries), the parks guy she met in Hawaii, but the
That’s the line The White Lotus is constantly straddling. It presents these characters as repellent and wants us to laugh at them. But the only way that’s sustainable across a season is if they’re also relatably human in some way.
Like, Tanya’s profound little-girl-lost-sadness – if you can’t feel something for her besides contempt, then the show doesn’t work at all. If you can’t see that Dom has inherited some of his attitudes towards women from his dad, then he’s irredeemable.
Of course, whether any of them are worthy of salvation is questionable. The White Lotus’ indictment of the wealthy is as obvious as its stablemate, Succession. Subtlety is not its forte.
This second season is less acerbic and not as heightened as the first series. While there’s a hotel concierge (Valentina, played by Italian actor Sabrina Impacciatore), she’s nowhere near as compelling as Murray Bartlett’s Armond. Of course, her approach to sexual harassment and management leaves much to be desired.
If there’s a central figure tying together the guests, it’s Lucia, the sex worker, a wily and clever woman who knows how to exploit every opportunity in a system that has privileged these bloated richie-riches. Maybe she’s the real hero?
It again takes a few episodes to ramp up – the first two and a half episodes could be generously described as luxuriating on a holiday schedule, and it only really grabs you by the proverbial balls by episode four.
But at least it’s done away with its somewhat ham-fisted attempts at commentary about colonisation – the Italian setting is less of a conduit than Hawaii was in the first season.
This instalment is much more focused on just the characters than trying to “say something”. In some ways, that makes it a less frustrating experience than the first series. In others, it’s not as punchy.
No plot should have a beginning and a middle but no end in sight. Otherwise, aside from making money, what’s a story for? So it’s good news that, 12 years on with pauses caused by cancellation then COVID, Top Boy (Netflix) is paying a conclusive visit to the Summerhouse estate in six punchy episodes.
The fifth season begins more or less where the fourth, which ended with two executions and a stabbing, left off. In the opener, an unsavoury gift awaits Sully (Kane Robinson) and his secondin-command Jaq (Jasmine Jobson) when they open up a transit van to collect a delivery. Without revealing what it is, hats off to the design team.
This turns out to be the calling card of a pitiless gang barging in from Ireland. Lest we forget, the progenitor of this breakneck epic is Belfast-born Ronan Bennett.
Jonny, their bantamweight
enforcer, is played by Barry Keoghan. Prepare to be chilled and mesmerised: Oscarnominated for playing naïve in The Banshees of Inisherin, he’s quite as adept at almost casual thuggery.
Meanwhile, what of Dushane (Ashley Walters)? At the start of the first episode, he’s pushed aside by the leaner, hungrier desperado Sully and sagaciously opts to sink some winnings into the legit nail bar business of his girlfriend Shelley (Simbiatu Ajikawo, aka rapper Little Simz). “Can we cheers to that?” she says hopefully in a swanky restaurant. Probably not.
It’s a cast-iron rule with Top Boy that whenever anyone has a smile on their face, it won’t be there for long. The plot soon plunges Dushane in the dark labyrinth of Hackney’s less-thancertified banking system.
The first four episodes are directed at pace by Myriam Raja, who also shot the fourth season finale. Her biggest challenge here is a teeming set piece in which Summerhouse residents protest to thwart a Home Office deportation. Perhaps a storyline inspired by the Windrush Scandal feels a bit behind the curve. Not a script that entraps a fresh generation of children and even babies. While this addictive saga will exit with a satisfying bang, that’s the real story that never ends.
