A message from
The Windward Institute We hope this message finds you, your colleagues, and your students healthy and safe. These past few months have been full of transformations, including kitchen tables into school desks, living rooms into conference rooms, and computer screens into classrooms. This is a true testament of resilience that all of us as educators can reflect on proudly when we come through this crisis together. One unwavering call of The Windward Institute is to deliver the highest level of professional development, based on the most current research. Now, more than ever, providing courses, workshops, and lectures in reading, writing, and language & social skills to support educators, parents, and practitioners is of the utmost importance to us. In response to the current COVID-19 landscape, members of The Windward Institute team reconfigured our professional development plan. We expanded webinar offerings and created a resource page for educators and parents that provides the broader educational community with reliable research studies, educational activities, and materials to support children with a wide range of learning needs. While this uncertain time is challenging, The Institute maintains a steadfast focus on its mission to increase childhood literacy rates by disrupting the educational status quo to save more lives. The Windward Institute continues to monitor the evolving COVID-19 situation and follow public health guidelines. We have worked diligently to ensure that the content and presentation of our virtual classes are to the same exacting standards as the ones typically offered on-site. In keeping the best interest of everyone’s health at the forefront, should COVID-19 restrictions be in place at the time a fall or winter course or workshop is scheduled, that offering will be presented on our virtual platform. All registrants will be notified. We look forward to having you join us for our fall and winter classes, whether they are on our virtual platform or at one of our campuses. WRITING SKILLS EXPOSITORY WRITING INSTRUCTION: Part One Expectations to meet the new writing standards begin in the early grades and extend through high school. In this course, Betsy M. Duffy, MS Ed, Director of Language Arts and Instruction at The Windward School, will present strategies for teaching expository writing in all content areas in grades K-12. The course offers specific evidence-based techniques to add structure, coherence, and clarity to students’ expository writing. Instructional guidelines will be presented for developing complex sentences, outlining, writing paragraphs and compositions, and revising and editing. Many exemplars will explicitly demonstrate how to teach foundational and organizational skills necessary to write an argumentative essay. An overview of how to plan an expository reading lesson as a springboard to writing is now included in the course. This prominent writing program, developed at The
Windward School, is based on large statistical research studies for best practice in writing and utilizes strategies outlined in publications such as the Elementary and Secondary Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Practice Guides by Steve Graham, et al. Approaches from Teaching Basic Writing Skills (TBWS): Strategies for Effective Expository Writing Instruction by Judith C. Hochman and TBWS Templates by Betsy MacDermott-Duffy are incorporated with findings from Writing to Read: Evidence for How Writing Can Improve Reading (Graham, S., and Hebert, M., 2010.) This writing program can be implemented in general classrooms and special education settings. For teachers of grades K-12 Both courses are offered for one graduate credit. There are additional hours, assignments, and fees. For more information about graduate credit, contact WI prior to registration.

LANGUAGE & SOCIAL SKILLS LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AND EARLY LITERACY: Building Phonological Awareness Skills
CLASSROOM LANGUAGE DYNAMICS: The Language of Learning and Literacy
Did you know that babies start laying the foundation for learning to read the moment they are born? The sounds that they hear and store are converted into the letters they decode and use to spell. Much sooner than you know it, they can begin to demonstrate their knowledge of sounds and all the fun and essential skills for manipulating them. This knowledge is the next level of learning to read. In this workshop, Lydia H. Soifer, PhD, will identify the phonological awareness skills essential for reading and present a variety of materials and techniques that can be used to build and solidify these abilities in young children. For teachers of grades Pre-K-2
Language plays a vital role in every aspect of a child’s time in school. Language affects the way children learn and teachers teach. Decoding and comprehension, vocabulary and concept knowledge, thinking and reasoning, writing, and social skills are just some of the areas where the language of learning and literacy are crucial. This comprehensive course, taught by Lydia H. Soifer, PhD, will focus on these key topics, while participants will refine techniques and strategies for enhancing language learning in the classroom. Presentation of applications for students, group activities, and mini-case studies will reinforce essential concepts. For teachers of grades K–8

FALL COMMUNITY LECTURE How Families and Educators Can Address Anxiety Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health disorders in the United States; 31.9% of adolescents meet criteria for at least one. Additionally, anxiety disorders are on the rise: high school students today have more anxiety symptoms than did teens in the 1980s, and 80% of youth with an anxiety disorder are not receiving treatment. Without effective intervention, anxiety in childhood tends to persist and can lead to additional mental health problems. As students spend approximately 1,000 hours each year in school, school-based professionals play a crucial role in identifying students who are struggling with anxiety and helping students receive appropriate interventions. Social support is key when considering resilience in a time of stress. It is crucial for parents and educators to support children in a variety of ways that promote resilience and bravery. 12
