WRITING SKILLS EXPOSITORY WRITING INSTRUCTION: Part One Expectations to meet the new writing standards begin in the early grades and extend through high school. In this course, Betsy M. Duffy, MS Ed, Director of Language Arts and Instruction at The Windward School, will present strategies for teaching expository writing in all content areas in grades K-12. The course offers specific evidence-based techniques to add structure, coherence and clarity to students’ expository writing. Instructional guidelines will be presented for developing complex sentences, outlining, writing paragraphs and compositions, and revising and editing. Many exemplars will explicitly demonstrate how to teach foundational and organizational skills necessary to write an argumentative essay. An overview of how to plan an expository reading lesson as a springboard to writing is now included in the course.

EXPOSITORY WRITING INSTRUCTION: Part Two – Primary

This prominent writing program, developed at The Windward School, is based on large statistical research studies for best practice in writing and utilizes strategies outlined in publications such as the Elementary and Secondary Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Practice Guides by Steve Graham, et al. Approaches from Teaching Basic Writing Skills (TBWS): Strategies for Effective Expository Writing Instruction by Judith C. Hochman and TBWS Templates by Betsy MacDermott-Duffy are incorporated with findings from Writing to Read: Evidence for How Writing Can Improve Reading (Graham, S., and Hebert, M., 2010.) This writing program can be implemented in general classrooms and special education settings. For teachers of grades K-12

In this two-hour workshop, Ann Spataro, a Coordinator of Language Arts at The Windward School, will demonstrate writing strategies that will improve the written expression and enhance the reading comprehension skills of young students. It includes strategies to build the foundational skills necessary for writing opinion, expository, and narrative texts. For teachers of grades K-3 or remedial classes grade 4 Prerequisite: Expository Writing Instruction: Part One

In this workshop, Tim Caccopola, Coordinator of Study Skills at The Windward School, will present specific, sequential, evidence-based strategies for teaching the writing of a research paper. Participants will receive instructional guidelines for teaching students organizational and time management skills, the location of reliable resources on topical issues across content areas, the development of a research plan, the note-taking process, the preparation of an outline, and the process of writing a paper with appropriate citations and a bibliography. This Study Skills program can be implemented in mainstream as well as special education settings, and the methodology can be used for resource rooms and tutorials. For teachers of grades 5–12

MULTISENSORY READING INSTRUCTION: PAF Reading Program – Part I This four-session course focuses on multisensory techniques for teaching reading, writing and spelling in the primary grades using the PAF Reading Program. PAF incorporates the theory and practices of Orton-Gillingham instruction into an early intervention program intended to be used with groups of children at-risk for reading difficulties. PAF can also be used remedially for struggling readers or as an effective beginning reading program for all children. Topics will include instructional practices supported by the latest research on developing accurate and fluent reading and comprehension, lesson planning, and curriculum-based assessments. For teachers of grades K-5 This course is offered for one graduate credit. There are additional hours, assignments and fees.

READING SKILLS ABCs OF TESTING: Using Reading Test Results to Plan Instruction In recent years, considerable attention has focused on the merits of testing and test scores. To plan effective reading instruction, teachers must be able to interpret reading results that pinpoint each student’s strengths and weaknesses. In this two-session workshop, Ronnie Berish, Coordinator of Special Services at The Windward School, will identify the skills needed for effective reading. Participants will be shown specific tests that focus on each of those skills, and how and why the reading tests are selected, administered, and interpreted. Participants will actively engage in interpreting the results of selected tests and discuss the ways in which the information will be used. For teachers of grades 1-8

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AND EARLY LITERACY: Building Phonological Awareness Skills

All students can benefit from learning strategies for reading and spelling multisyllabic words. Rapid word recognition plays an important role in reading fluency and comprehension. Learning syllable types helps students learn to decode longer words accurately and efficiently. Syllabication is a critical word analysis skill that helps students break unknown multisyllable words into syllables that can be pronounced. In this four-hour workshop, The Windward School Language Arts faculty will present techniques for the explicit teaching of syllable types and the rules of syllabication. For teachers of grades 3-12

Did you know that babies start laying the foundation for learning to read the moment they are born? The sounds that they hear and store are converted into the letters they decode and use to spell. Much sooner than you know it they can begin to demonstrate their knowledge of sounds and all the fun and essential skills for manipulating them. This knowledge is the next level of learning to read. In this workshop, Lydia H. Soifer, PhD, contributing author for Oral Language Development and Its Relationship to Literacy, will identify the phonological awareness skills essential for reading and present a variety of materials and techniques that can be used to build and solidify these abilities in young children. Dr. Mark Bertin, contributing author for the textbook Teaching Mindfulness Skills to Kids and Teens, will use an application driven-lens to focus on specific ways to implement mindfulness practices for all children, including those with ADHD, in both school and home settings. Mindfulness builds skills that help us manage stress, problem solve, facilitate communication, support relationships and compassion, and far more. MEANINGFUL MATH: Effective Multisensory Strategies for Teaching Math

One of the newest findings in child development is the importance of executive function, a set of cognitive abilities that act as our “brain manager.” Executive function is responsible for selfmonitoring, planning, organizing and is related to both emotional regulation and resilience. It is critical for social development, family relationships and academics. Many choices we make as adults can impact the development of executive function in children as it evolves from infancy to young adulthood. In this workshop, Dr. Mark Bertin, distinguished author of numerous books on child development, will include a discussion of how research on executive function can guide teachers and parents in making wise decisions with children of any age.

Working memory is essential to effective learning. Along with executive functions and language ability, working memory facilitates or impedes ease of learning. In this workshop, Dr. Lydia H. Soifer, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, will discuss the role and impact of working memory on students, along with ways to recognize working memory failures, and important practical techniques to support and teach those with working memory deficits. COMMUNIT Y LECTURE WHY SOME CHILDREN STRUGGLE TO READ: The Neurobiology of Dyslexia and Other Reasons Children Struggle Dyslexia is one of the most prevalent disabilities affecting American school children. Between 8% and 10% of American children have dyslexia, and more than 10% of other children are at risk of identification. The question addressed in this lecture is why children have dyslexia. Dr. Kearns will explain how children with this languagebased learning disability have brains that process specific tasks differently and how this relates to their performance on reading-related tests as well as other possible causes of word reading difficulty that can be confused with dyslexia. He will also address controversies about dyslexia—including why some people do not even like the word. The goal of the lecture is to help people understand what dyslexia is and what it is not. Thursday, October 24, 2019 DEVIN KEARNS is an associate professor of Special Education in the Department of Educational Psychology in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut and a Center for Behavioral Education & Research (CBER) and Haskins Laboratories research scientist. Dr. Kearns holds a Ph.D. in Special Education from Vanderbilt University. He researches reading disabilities—including dyslexia— and designs, implements, and tests reading intervention programs. He examines intervention impact on reading achievement and neurobiological processing. Dr. Kearns publishes articles for educators and researchers on reading difficulty and often provides professional development to help educators implement high-quality reading instruction.
