Expository Writing Instruction: Part One Expectations to meet the new writing standards begin in the early grades and extend through high school. In this course, Betsy M. Duffy, MS Ed, Director of Language Arts and Instruction at The Windward School, will present strategies for teaching expository writing in all content areas in grades K-12. The course offers specific evidence-based techniques to add structure, coherence and clarity to students’ expository writing. Instructional guidelines will be presented for developing complex sentences, outlining, writing paragraphs and compositions, and revising and editing. Many exemplars will explicitly demonstrate how to teach foundational and organizational skills necessary to write an argumentative essay. An overview of how to plan an expository reading lesson as a springboard to writing is now included in the course. This writing program, used at The Windward School, is based on large statistical research studies for best practice in writing and utilizes strategies outlined in publications by Steve Graham et al, Teaching Basic Writing Skills, and The Hochman Method. These writing strategies can be implemented in general classrooms and special educations settings. For teachers of grades K-12 This course is offered for one graduate credit. There are additional hours, assignments and fees.

READING SKILLS Multisensory Reading Instruction: PAF Part II In PAF Part II, Phyllis Bertin, co-author of Preventing Academic Failure (PAF), will present additional topics that will enhance reading instruction for students in grades 1-6. Topics include techniques for developing accuracy and fluency in reading, developing comprehension skills, reading multisyllabic words and for transitioning out of decodable text to grade level text. This four-session course is for teachers who have taken Multisensory Reading Instruction: PAF Part I. For teachers of grades K–6 Prerequisite: Multisensory Reading Instruction: PAF Part I This course is offered for one graduate credit. There are additional hours, assignments and fees.

Reading Fluency: From Research to Classroom Research confirms that fluent reading, the ability to read text accurately and with sufficient speed to support comprehension, is critical for learning. Fluency is particularly challenging for students with dyslexia, even after they have learned to decode accurately. In this workshop, Phyllis Bertin will review the latest research and present a variety of instructional techniques for developing reading fluency. For teachers of grades 1-8
Multisensory Reading Instruction: PAF Part I This five-session course taught by Phyllis Bertin, co-author of the PAF (Preventing Academic Failure) program, focuses on multisensory techniques for teaching reading, writing and spelling in the primary grades. PAF incorporates the theory and practices of OrtonGillingham instruction into an early intervention program intended to be used with groups of children at-risk for reading difficulties. PAF can also be used remedially for struggling readers or as an effective beginning reading program for all children. Topics will include instructional practices supported by the latest research on developing accurate and fluent reading and comprehension, lesson planning, and curriculum-based assessments. For teachers of grades K-6 This course is offered for two graduate credits. There are additional hours, assignments and fees.

READING SKILLS Multisensory Reading Practicum: Using the PAF Program In the Multisensory Reading Practicum, participants will implement the skills and concepts acquired in Multisensory Reading Instruction: PAF Part I. Working closely with Keri Levine, a PAF master teacher, participants receive instructional support and mentoring as they plan and teach PAF lessons to students. During this 13-session practicum, participants utilize diagnostic, formative and summative assessments to enhance instruction; analyze student’s strengths and weaknesses to create individualized lessons and receive instructions and daily feedback from the instructor. For teachers of grades K–6 Prerequisite: Multisensory Reading Instruction: PAF Part I This course is offered for two graduate credits. There are additional hours, assignments and fees.

THE ROBERT J. SCHWARTZ MEMORIAL LECTURE Wednesday, April 25 Educational Neuroscience: How Cognitive Neuroscience Can Inform Approaches to Learning Educational neuroscience is an emerging field of research that draws upon the disciplines of cognitive neuroscience, education, and psychology, with the goal of examining neurobiological processes as related to education. In this lecture, the neural mechanisms of reading, mathematics, and attention will be discussed as well as insights about how this emerging field can influence instructional practice. In addition, neurobiological approaches that may inform and refine our understanding of how to identify and treat reading difficulties will be discussed. L O C AT I O N
