Our value proposition
“To be the number one international government services group”. That’s the vision that unites all our businesses as we manage critical assets in long-term partnership with our customers. The VT Value Proposition
Our involvement with the PFI VT is one of the leading providers of assets under the UK's Private Finance Initiative (PFI). This concept allows the customer to benefit from new facilities, infrastructure and equipment under a long-term arrangement that includes operation and support of the asset. These contracts are often critical to the customer's core business and require strong relationships, both with the customer and suppliers. VT is presently involved in twelve PFI's, with a total value of around £2.5bn to the Group. These include the provision of facilities such as schools and fire training centres; infrastructure in the form of communication networks; and equipment, including naval vessels, land vehicles and training aircraft.

If it’s critical to your business, it’s critical you choose a partner you can rely on Fleet management for the Metropolitan Police Keeping Britain's capital safe is the duty of the Metropolitan Police. Vehicles play a vital role in its work and the fleet of 3,700 must be ready whenever duty calls. The contract has just been extended to include a further 248 Protective Carrier Fleet vehicles. Under a ten-year contract the UK's largest for police vehicles - we're maintaining some 60 different vehicle types, many fitted with complex onboard systems. To meet our commitment we've invested in new service and repair facilities and put 16 mobile response teams in the field. Together they carry out 500 hours maintenance a day, helping deliver better than 89% availability with optimum vehicle performance. VT has also analysed the spot-hire requirements of the Met and replaced 600 shortterm hired vehicles with longterm leased assets, generating significant savings while maintaining availability.
The services we provide are close to our customers’ core activities, with a direct impact on their performance. Understanding their business is therefore vital, and so we work very hard at developing and maintaining close relationships with them. • Key elements of British life from financial services through to power generation rely on VT every second of the day. Under a 10-year contract VT delivers the critical radio time signal in the UK to a large number of time dependent systems on behalf of the National Physical Laboratory. Our newly-built facility has driven down costs, increased radio coverage and is delivering greater resilience and flexibility. • VT is central to the UK government’s drive to improve lifechances for British children and young people. With the largest integrated school improvement support service in the country, we're already working with over 500 schools, delivering training, development, consultancy, advice, project management and outsourced managed services throughout the UK. • The BBC World Service depends on us to reach 149 million listeners worldwide tuning in to more than 700 hours of programming every day. And, ensuring the BBC's pledge for coverage and quality is met, we continually monitor those broadcasts right across the world. • Fighting forces rely on logistics as much as firepower. And for the US Army’s Aviation and Missile Command, logistics increasingly means VT. Our 18-year track record of logistic support includes crucial life cycle maintenance of combat helicopters, fixed wing aircraft and electronic systems in service all over the world.

Availability-based contracting – what you need when you need it
Building Schools for the Future Partnering is key to VT's role in Building Schools for the Future, a 15-year, £45bn programme transforming education for children and adults across Britain. In partnership with industry and local authorities like Lewisham and Greenwich, we're forging public-private Local Education Partnerships to refurbish and build schools, and provide ICT, support, training, core maintenance and management expertise. Creating new opportunities and improving life chances for the next generation and beyond.
All the critical assets and services you need but with none of the burden of ownership or maintenance. Availability-based contracting means allocating risks to whoever is best placed to manage them. By taking on the risks associated with providing the assets and services, we can reduce costs and guarantee availability. Letting you concentrate on your core business while we take care of buildings and equipment. • Patrolling the seas around Trinidad and Tobago, the country's Coast Guard will shortly rely on ships supplied and supported by VT’s joint venture with BAE Systems, BVT Surface Fleet. Guaranteed vessel availability means the coast guard needs no costly infrastructure or spares holdings, allowing greater focus on maritime operations. • Emergency vehicles and equipment for major incidents across England are being supported by VT in a 16-year, £100m availability-based programme. For floods, terrorist attacks and other major incidents the New Dimension fleet is critical to national resilience and civil contingency. • Front line British Army construction vehicles owned and operated by VT/Amey joint venture ALC are supporting military operations worldwide. £100m ALC investment in new vehicles and local support will see reduced costs and better availability while reducing the workload on service personnel. • Vital aircrew training for UK military personnel from basic flying training through to fast jet pilots and rear crew, is coming from VT/Lockheed Martin joint venture Ascent in a 25-year, multibillion-pound programme that also embraces new facilities construction and infrastructure.

Innovative engineering-led solutions you can trust to deliver critical services Delivering digital media VT exploits innovative stateof-the-art technology to deliver a range of digital media services from its dedicated Media Management Centre in London. Its Digital Media capability is first and foremost about people – delivering content to audiences around the world on multiple platforms, including streaming, podcasting, audio-ondemand, internet radio and much more. The technology developed by VT means that broadcasters need only produce content once, deliver it to VT and then have total flexibility as to how, when and where it is delivered.
VT’s engineering roots lie in shipbuilding, but we have broadened our skills by acquiring new businesses and employing new people, to expand into other fields from construction to computing, and from education to electronics. Throughout all, the engineering mindset prevails. We have a desire to solve problems; a practical approach to getting the job done; and a willingness to adopt new ideas. • Groundbreaking waste treatment facilities built and run by VT will process the 200,000 tons of household rubbish produced annually by the people of Wakefield, South Yorkshire. State of the art technology will maximise recycling rates and leave a biodegradable material, reducing the need for landfill, whilst generating electricity to power the operation. • Top-class vehicle technicians are fundamental to the ongoing success of the VW Group, manufacturer of Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda cars and commercial vehicles. VT Education and Skills provides the automotive training to VW Group’s UK-based apprentices that ensures they continue to meet the levels of quality and customer service expected of their brands. • New high-efficiency transmitters broadcasting programmes for the BBC and other customers from two UK sites have been introduced by VT Communications. As well as reducing energy consumption by 25%, the new equipment has cut annual CO2 emissions by over 2,800 tonnes. • A high-speed WiFi for docked ships of the US Navy is being developed by Virginia-based VT Milcom. Previously reliant on expensive satellite links, the new system offers vessels in port significantly reduced costs, whilst offering crew improved access to emails and the internet.

Complex project management – making the seemingly impossible, possible
Nuclear Decommissioning Nuclear power is back on the agenda and VT Nuclear Services is ready with 40 years of experience and a team of 500 working in the UK, Europe and Japan on radiological monitoring, sampling, detection, decommissioning and cleanup. Our track record at Sellafield and existing power stations in the UK, as well as sites in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union is helping provide much needed critical solutions for spent fuel storage, reactor decommissioning and hazardous waste management.
Most of VT’s business is high-value, long-duration contracts, but our smaller contracts can also demand substantial resource, time and cost management. At the same time a lot of what we do is finely tailored to individual clients' needs. No two projects are the same, indeed many are wholly new concepts. But whether large or small, conventional or highly specialised, our comprehensive project management skills always ensure we minimise risk while delivering exactly what the customer needs. • Enhanced high frequency communications for all three UK armed forces has been the result of VT Communications' DHFCS programme, a 15-year, £220m Public Private Partnership bringing investment in new facilities and services. Quality and reliability have increased, whilst costs have been significantly reduced, helping VT win a ministerial award for its performance. • Managing 15,000 vehicles in the UK Ministry of Defence White Fleet - from VIP transport to mountain rescue - VT Support Services monitors and maintains every vehicle to minimise offroad time and meets short notice hire needs, all while achieving customer satisfaction scores of better than 97%. • When military pilots in the United Kingdom start their careers VT Support Services will play a key role in their initial flying training. A 10-year, £150m plus programme will see the company supply and maintain aircraft, providing up to 60,000 flying hours a year for students, at locations throughout the UK. • Britain's largest and most powerful fighting ships are being built in Portsmouth by VT/BAE Systems joint venture BVT Surface Fleet. The CVF aircraft carriers are just one element in a 15 plusyear partnership with the Ministry of Defence and part of a much larger collaboration in ship design, build and support for home and export markets.
