t The Wooden Floor, we love dance. It’s powerful. It has the ability to encourage our youth to think differently about themselves, to push through obstacles, and emerge as strong and confident leaders.

It’s why, when partnered with our academic, college and career readiness, and family services, 100 percent of our graduates do what less than half of their socioeconomic peers have done–finish high school on time and enroll in higher education for 15 consecutive years. Through dance, The Wooden Floor provides a solid platform for advancement and success.

Dance moves our youth. Forward. 36th Annual Concert | The Wooden Floor

STUDENT SUCCESS

" “When I’m on stage, time stops. It feels great. I know I am going to be the art form. I am the painting or exhibit when you go into the museum. I get to show the world what I’ve got. Without a doubt, The Wooden Floor has changed my life for the better, offering me a love for dance, numerous support systems, and incredible opportunities. The opportunity to seek what I want to accomplish in life, to overcome obstacles, and to dream. To dream of my ability to do anything I may set my mind to. As the motto goes, “From here, you can step anywhere."

WELCOME

W

elcome to The Wooden Floor’s 36th Annual Concert: Of Knowing Where. Our Annual Concert serves as a milestone for our students, alumni, families, staff, supporters, and Board of Directors. It’s a moment when we are able to take stock and celebrate all that we have accomplished both in the past year and cumulatively. This year, we as an organization celebrated the one-year anniversary of our second location, The Wooden Floor at Depot at Santiago. This new location has allowed us to serve an additional 100 students, totaling 475 young people year-round. Due to your tremendous dedication and support of this significant expansion of our services, our programmatic operating expenses for our second location have now been fully pre-funded for the next 10 years! Thank you for your steadfast support of this initiative. As Lift: The Campaign for The Wooden Floor nears the finish line, it continues to galvanize community support to fulfill the last chapter of the campaign’s vision. This past March, The Wooden Floor’s Board of Directors identified and approved a third location for the organization, within the same Depot at Santiago workforce housing community. This will allow us to serve yet another 100 students throughout their 10-year journeys with quality programs and the transformational outcomes our community has come to expect–without diminishing service outcomes for our existing student body. It is an honor and my good fortune to be the Chairman of this incredible organization at this momentous time. I look forward to standing with our long-term supporters as well as new supporters to fulfill the vision to move even more young people forward. It takes all of us, together, to accomplish this important and needed next step. Sincerely,

F

or the title of this year’s Annual Concert, Of Knowing Where, Artistic Director Falon Baltzell was inspired by our students knowing where they’re coming from, where they’re going, and envisioning their future. She utilized input captured from students and The Wooden Floor community, which is informing the organization’s next 10-year strategic vision. “Knowing” is about being deliberate, assured, and confident in their place in our world. The Wooden Floor's student outcomes align perfectly with the Orange County Department of Education's goal to foster the 5 Cs of Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity, and Character in order to prepare students for their futures. At The Wooden Floor, we strive to foster a sixth C: Courage, which you will unmistakably witness tonight on stage. We believe when dance is a catalyst for change, innovation flourishes into courageous life-changing outcomes for the children we serve, and moves The Wooden Floor's exciting mission forward, which helps move our community forward. As we look to the future, we know a loving, compassionate community is the key to our students’ success. Our powerful performances are the visual representation of our year-round programs and the 6 Cs that prepare our students for success in school and in life. We are humbled and honored by your support and know that you join us in cheering loudly for our students, as well as our Artistic Director, who makes her Annual Concert choreographic debut for The Wooden Floor at these performances. After witnessing our performances, we hope that you are inspired to move forward together to make the dreams of more children possible. With gratitude,

ABOUT US

About The Wooden Floor

F

ounded in 1983, The Wooden Floor is one of the foremost creative youth development nonprofit organizations in the country. We transform the lives of young people in low-income communities through the power of dance and access to higher education. In Orange County, and through national licensed partners, we use a long-term approach grounded in exploratory dance education to foster the confidence and gifts within each child to innovate, communicate, and collaborate–skills necessary for success in school and in life. 100 percent of students who graduate from The Wooden Floor immediately enroll in higher education. Our students become change agents and beacons of hope within their own families, their neighborhoods, our community, and our world.

Dance Education & Performance Opportunities Dance education and performance are the core transformational elements through which our youth change the way they think about themselves and aspire beyond the grip of socioeconomic barriers. In the dance studio, exploration, creativity, and self-knowledge lead to critical life skills, confidence, leadership, teamwork, well-being, and joy.

DANCE EDUCATION Dance classes are offered each week in modern, ballet, and choreography with professional faculty and live music accompanists.

CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT We make a commitment to a dance aesthetic that values exploration, discovery, and innovation, which leads to student success in school and in life.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Dance Free Weeks™, a community engagement program held in schools throughout Santa Ana and neighboring under-served communities, reaches about 3,000 additional students annually.

ON STAGE Our young artists collaborate with recognized choreographers to create unexpected and challenging works of contemporary dance, performed in professional settings.

“Being here is relaxing and you can come out of your stress. Sometimes you can meet new friends who you can invite to your house for a sleepover. Something I learned here is how the body works. Your muscles get better and can do more stuff. Once my teacher brought a skeleton to class. She showed us about the bones, and some of them I did not know about. I want to go to college because I want to become a ballerina and a doctor.

Maria, Class of 2027

Maria has been at The Wooden Floor for two years and plans to be the first in her family to go to college. She currently attends Jim Thorpe Fundamental Elementary School and has a 3.0 GPA.

LIFT CAMPAIGN

At The Wooden Floor, the whole family is supported. Izrael joined The Wooden Floor in 2016 and was followed by his brother Daren, who enrolled the following year. According to their mother Sandra, The Wooden Floor has been an educational experience not only for her boys, but for her and her husband, as well. Sandra and her husband have access to parenting and communications workshops, one-on-one counseling, and other free services to help their boys succeed in school and in life.

Continuing to Invest in Tomorrow's Leaders Lift: The Campaign for The Wooden Floor

Inspiring Young People. Building Our Community. The Lift Campaign for The Wooden Floor is a comprehensive four-year campaign to raise $27.2 million by 2020. Thanks to the vision of Orange County leaders, we have already fulfilled over 60 percent of our goal, providing the energy and opportunity to change more lives. Every generous gift to The Wooden Floor supports our Lift Campaign goals to expand our campus, serve more youth, deepen our services, and build upon our Endowment Fund. Join us and our forward-looking community of supporters as we answer the call together to transform the lives of young people in low-income communities through the power of dance and access to higher education.

LIFT CAMPAIGN

We must go deeper. Our record of student success has fueled internal growth in our student body through a high retention rate. We must expand current programming to sustain outcomes for larger numbers of students on their paths to success in school and in life.

We must start earlier. The college access landscape is rapidly changing. Four-year college eligibility is increasingly competitive, and the bar continues to rise. We must advance to help students overcome challenges to access higher education.

36th Annual Concert | The Wooden Floor

We must serve more. Across the past five years we have been forced to turn away 80 percent of children who line up to enroll due to current space constraints. We are called to pursue collaborative growth opportunities to serve more children.

It’s your move. To learn more and discuss how you can help, contact Dawn S. Reese, Chief Executive Officer, at 714.541.8314 ext. 136 or Dawn@TheWoodenFloor.org or visit LiftCampaign.org.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Behind the Scenes with Falon Baltzell, Artistic Director Watching a Modern Dance Piece The concept of a modern dance piece can range from literal, to abstract, to no meaning at all. Dance reflects who we are, therefore, the audience becomes the viewing artist who decides what the dance is about and how it makes them feel. No answer is wrong, even if it does not match the choreographer’s main idea. Leaving the performance with questions about what you saw is a good thing–a conversation-starter about what your experiences were while watching our Annual Concert.

History of Modern Dance In the 17th century, ballet was first standardized by King Louis XIV of France. Louis XIV established the Paris Opera Ballet, a theatrical school for music and dance, where its artists developed the classical techniques of ballet as we know it today. In the early 1800s, European dancers and members of the Paris Opera came to America and opened the first school of ballet. In the 1890s, San Francisco-born Isadora Duncan, although trained in ballet, believed ballet limited how a person could move. Through her exploration of free movement, Isadora was the catalyst for changing how we see the art of dance. Throughout the 20th century, Isadora and other influential pioneers rebelled against classical ballet and sought to inspire audiences with a new form of free movement they called modern dance. Modern dance today often incorporates balletic movement, other styles of dance, and new ways of moving.

Why The Wooden Floor Performs Modern Dance We are often asked why we choose our approach to dance. It is a commitment to a dance approach that values exploration, discovery, and innovation, which leads to the success of our students in school and life.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Our Students’ Creative Process Our students spent over 130 hours in rehearsal for this performance. Throughout the rehearsal process, students reflected on their experience via journaling and Q&A sessions. Here’s some of what I heard:

“My experience so far has been very fun– collaborating with friends, being active, and creating something people will love.”

Diego, Class of 2024

“My favorite part about the learning and creating dances is really just that you can express yourself through dance and no one will judge you. When I dance, I find myself just forgetting about everything that worries me in life.”

Isabella, Class of 2022

“This is my first concert in a long time. I was reminded of my amazement in the magic of the first day of rehearsal, not knowing what you will do, and then a month or two later, we have this ten minute piece that is amazing. And I look back, and have no idea how I got to this. I remember one day learning a combination and how it turned into a phrase, and then turned into something great. I really like that.”

passing through the trees ANGIE MUZZY, CHOREOGRAPHER This work is a visual landscape of a New England forest set to an original score by Jordan Chiolis. The collage of movement explores the process of play, ranging from contrasting ideas of wonderment and indifference, harmony and conflict, as well as hope and doubt. Working with an all-female cast, Muzzy co-created a playful, gestural, and expressive dance inspired by the human connection to nature.

FALON BALTZELL, CHOREOGRAPHER

DAVID DORFMAN, CHOREOGRAPHER

Falon Baltzell’s energetic and creative all-male cast investigates the complexities of navigating disorder into structure through perseverance and athleticism despite heavier than usual traffic. Driven by organized chaos, dancers embark on a journey of adapting to each roadblock collectively, where teamwork encourages making the next right move.

Falling to Float (a guide to getting lost) is about the joys and travails of deep friendship, trusting love, safe places in a crazy world, and the camaraderie that is established with vibrant young people. The dance has an original musical score by Elizabeth de Lise, played live on cello, percussion, guitar, electronics, and voice. The theatre will vibrate with humanity, humor, and wildly athletic dancing–you will be moved! This work is inspired by and shares some creative material with Clouds Fall in Love, from The Wooden Floor’s Co-Creation Lab in 2018.

○ Lead Class Partner ● Class Partner Lead Class Partners and Class Partners are individuals, companies, and organizations who support the academic, college and career readiness, and college scholarship programs that each of The Wooden Floor’s 10 graduating classes of students need to make their dreams of higher education a reality.

36th Annual Concert | The Wooden Floor

p Dance Partner

n Neighbors

Dance Partner supporters underwrite a student’s annual participation at The Wooden Floor. Dance Partner students know there is someone outside of their family standing in their corner, encouraging them to overcome challenges and achieve success in school and life. Dance Partners and students stay connected through pen pal letters and optional visits at events and on campus.

A group of committed supporters who form a neighborhood to inspire our youth to succeed. Annual and sustaining monthly gifts provide the support our students can count on.

ALUMNI SUCCESS

“At The Wooden Floor, I learned that creativity and having your own way of portraying your personality can help set you apart from others. The great amounts of fun I had during Annual Concert season also helped me build more team working skills. I was not the first in my family to attend college, but I was the first to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. The Wooden Floor prepared me for college and encouraged me to finish.”

Alfredo, Class of 2012

Alfredo graduated from California State University, Fullerton in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He is currently an Electrical Engineer with DHS Consulting. After gaining work experience, he plans to go to graduate school. 34
