DANCE IS THE ANSWER. At The Wooden Floor, we love dance. It’s powerful. It has the ability to encourage our youth to think differently about themselves, to push through obstacles, and emerge as strong and confident leaders. It’s why our students call us their second home, why on the dance floor they feel supported, able to embody who they really are. It’s why, when partnered with our academic, college and career readiness, and family services, 100 percent of our graduates do what less than half of their socioeconomic peers have done – finish high school on time and enroll in higher education for 18 consecutive years. Through dance, The Wooden Floor provides a solid platform for advancement and success.

Dance moves our youth. Forward.

"I feel very joyful during the Annual Concert rehearsals. It is truly wonderful we get to learn new things every day."

“The Wooden Floor is the best. Honestly, it has helped me a lot over the five years I’ve been here. I feel very joyful during the Annual Concert rehearsals. It is truly wonderful we get to learn new things every day. When I first started, I was very timid and self-conscious. The Wooden Floor has helped me feel more confident, to become more open with people. It has also helped a lot with my feelings. It is hard to explain, but when I’m down I think of dance and my friends here, and that helps me.”

Danna, Class of 2027 Danna is in 7th grade and holds a 4.3 GPA at Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School. She excels in dance and models The Wooden Floor’s values among her peers at all times. She was in The Wooden Floor’s sitespecific Annual Concert in 2021. This will be her first time performing at the Irvine Barclay Theatre due to the pandemic. Danna dreams of being a history or social studies teacher.

WELCOME

W

hat a joy it is for me to welcome you back to the Irvine Barclay Theatre for The Wooden Floor’s 39th Annual Concert: Hope Abounds! Art does so much for our students and our community – it helps us grow, it inspires us, it heals us. This full-circle moment of The Wooden Floor returning to the theater in-person after two years encapsulates all that and more! This concert serves as my first as the Chair of the Board of Directors, and I’m filled with pride by our community’s perseverance, the dedication of our students and staff, and the fierce commitment by supporters like you to ensure we made it to this moment - with our students back in the spotlight where they belong. All the while, we as an organization did not skip a beat. Between our last concert and now, we embarked on our newest 10-year Strategic Vision (2021-2031) and launched into Chapter 1 (2021-2023) of that vision: Leading with Agility. Strengthening Our Community. As we strategically charted our course for the future, key themes began to take shape, including focusing on the present and sustainability as we emerge from the pandemic. We also take aim at broadening and deepening engagement within our community toward resources, mentoring, volunteerism, and philanthropy. Our end result for this Strategic Vision is to drive social innovation, grow our impact, and uplift our community. While we’ve only just started this 10-year journey, we continue to witness how dance education and performance are powerful transformational elements through which our young people change the way they think about themselves and develop the ability to reach their full potential. They inspire us.

Our 39th Annual Concert performances are a manifestation of this optimism on stage that you will witness through each student’s dedication, originality, and palpable joy. We know that many of the children in our community have been suffering from social, emotional, and academic challenges. We have been working tirelessly, as one community, to ensure that The Wooden Floor’s students emerge from the pandemic with the internal strength to build upon this critical moment in their lives, and use it as a platform for success well into the future. When Artistic Director Falon Baltzell and I were inspired to create this year’s Annual Concert title Hope Abounds, it was due to the intersectionality of happenings in the organization as students returned to in-person classes and rehearsals with enthusiasm and a longing for connection. Input captured from the Annual Concert rehearsal assistants about the collaborative, co-creation process further elicited our feelings of hope, as did appreciating our courageous Board of Directors and staff who move our mission forward. Furthermore, our loving supporters like you continually fill our hearts with hope, showing your unwavering commitment to ensuring The Wooden Floor maintains high quality and excellence in the programs and outcomes for our students and families, as well as our community.

I am filled with optimism for my term as Chair of the Board of Directors as we stand with strength to accomplish these important goals - together. I encourage you to be a part of this incredible journey. Hope abounds!

We are even more strident today in the hope and the promise we provide for each child: from here you can step anywhere. On behalf of our students, we thank you!

Sincerely,

With gratitude,

Theresa Allen Chair of the Board of Directors, The Wooden Floor

T

he word “possibility” emerged for us this year as our word of intention for 2022. We have been in awe by the unflagging optimism and the future outlook that our students, our families, and our community have as they set their sights on brighter days ahead.

“The Wooden Floor has taught me that as long as you keep working for something, it is not as hard as it seems."

“The Wooden Floor has taught me that as long as you keep working for something, it is not as hard as it seems. Slowly but surely you’ll get there. Most of what you learn in Annual Concert rehearsal is timing and trust. There are moments when you carry someone and they have to trust you and they have to believe in you. You have to trust everyone is going to do their job. As for timing – you have to learn what your cue is, to pay attention, and be aware of others without making much noise.”

Kevin, Class of 2028 Kevin is in the 6th grade at Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School where he holds a 4.0 GPA. During remote learning, he gained confidence in dance and served as a leader in the class. He feels extremely fortunate to have been given a free laptop by The Wooden Floor so he could participate in remote learning. He loves attending the free one-on-one tutoring offered at The Wooden Floor, which his grades reflect. Kevin has a 100 percent attendance rate at The Wooden Floor and aspires to be the first in his family to gain higher education.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

About the Performance by Falon Baltzell, Artistic Director at The Wooden Floor Welcome to The Wooden Floor’s 39th Annual Concert: Hope Abounds! The Annual Concert provides all of us the opportunity to connect, witness the hallmark of artistic excellence, and appreciate The Wooden Floor’s mission in motion through the professionalism, creativity, and talent of the students. This year’s Annual Concert will feature three world premieres. Those new to modern dance often wonder about how to experience what they are seeing. Below are a few insights I hope will help you enjoy the performance.

Watching a Modern Dance Piece When observing a modern dance piece, you may wonder about what the dance means. The concept of a modern dance piece can range from literal, to abstract, to no meaning at all. Although piece descriptions are provided in the program, you are invited to see the dances from your perspective. You may witness a story unfold that reminds you about your day today or about a conversation you had with your best friend last week. Leaving the performance with questions about what you saw is a good thing–a conversation-starter about what your experiences were while watching our Annual Concert.

The History of Modern Dance In the 17th century, ballet was first standardized and popularized by King Louis XIV of France. Louis XIV established the Paris Opera Ballet, a theatrical school for music and dance, where its artists developed the classical techniques of ballet as we know it today. In the early 1800s, European dancers and members of the Paris Opera came to America and opened the first American school of ballet. In the 1890s, San Francisco-born Isadora Duncan, although trained in ballet, believed ballet limited how a person could move. Through her exploration of free movement, Isadora was the catalyst for modern dance. Throughout the 20th century, Isadora and other influential pioneers rebelled against classical ballet and sought to inspire audiences with a new form of free movement they called modern dance. Modern dance today often incorporates balletic movement and other styles of dance that innovate different ways of moving.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

Why The Wooden Floor Performs Modern Dance We are often asked why we choose our approach to dance. It is a commitment to a dance approach that values exploration, discovery, and innovation, which leads to the success of our students in school and in life. Dance makes a lifechanging impact on the young people we serve. Through dance, we teach our children to take responsibility for themselves and their futures by taking ownership of their bodies. The properties of our dance curriculum center on innovation, creativity, curiosity, teamwork, self-sufficiency, and courage. In pursuit of a life challenge, our students follow the same processes they learn in the dance studio – processes that are used by working professionals every day: ideation, collaboration, planning, execution, and reflection. Repeated over and over in the dance studio and on stage year after year, this leads our students to reach new personal milestones. Success and feelings of accomplishment permeate and lift up all areas of their lives, from academics to the dreams they hold for their futures. As a result, creativity and resilience are cultivated, confidence blooms and full potential can be realized. For these reasons, dance is at the core of The Wooden Floor’s Theory of Change.

ABOUT THE DANCES

About the dances Colossal

Luminance

Choreographer Kendra Portier’s piece Colossal explores the energy, texture, color, and poeticism of geologic mechanizations - the majestic and cataclysmic. Arriving like a movement painting, the dancers move through vibrant swells of action that cascade, careen, and skitter into quicksilver rhythms and simmering pools of patience and care. Complex patterns unearthed like hills shaped by time, rivers, and wind, the performers are the architects, the painters, the creators of a world built together.

The Wooden Floor’s Artistic Director Falon Baltzell’s piece Luminance examines the wonderment, oddity, and idiosyncrasies of pushing ourselves beyond our limits through courage and curiosity. Dancers explore moving through space and time to engineer a luminance world composed of structural landscapes and minimalistic movement design. The performers are exploring, trying to find out as much as they can about their new world, reminding the audience about the courage, curiosity, and glowing light within us all.

ABOUT THE DANCES

duneswept

by Christina Robson Choreographer Christina Robson’s piece, duneswept, is a meditation on constructing patterns of movement and experiencing their impermanence. The ensemble swells through space, each fleeting moment thoughtfully imprinted into the swirling melodies of the Emerson String Quartet. Like elements shape landscape, movements erode, drift and flood, forming and reforming. This work explores a continuous cycle of gestural movements, their inherent dissolve and residual impressions. duneswept is inspired by Robson’s New England upbringing and the capricious coastal landscapes of Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Kendra Portier, Choreographer, is also an educator, and performer. Born at home in Ohio, Kendra has facilitated and promoted dance across the globe from San Diego to Salzburg, Dushanbe to Athens (Greece, Georgia, and Ohio). She has an extensive teaching roster and has collaborated in a range of works—most notoriously a decade-long tenure with David Dorfman Dance and the interdisciplinary, project-based performances of BAND/Portier. Christina Robson, Choreographer, is also a dancer, educator, and graduate student at The University of Maryland. Christina has performed internationally with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, David Dorfman Dance, Sean Curran Company, and others. Her choreography moves fluidly between expressions of visual order and wildness producing fleeting glimpses of humanity through the collaborative effort of shared physicality. Mike Salvino, Technical Director, marks his first year as Technical Director for The Wooden Floor, but has assisted in production with the organization for four years. He has worked in entertainment production for 12+ years and currently works on a variety of events for the Disneyland Resort. He has worked behind the scenes for countless live and recorded shows primarily as a lighting designer and lighting programmer. Jennifer Vaughan, Costume Designer, has designed costumes for over 80 The Wooden Floor pieces since 1987. She is continually excited to work with the creative artists at The Wooden Floor. Other credits include designs for Santa Rosa Repertory Theatre, various television shows, and many ice skating productions including HBO’s Gershwin on Ice starring Dorothy Hamill.

p Dance Partner

n Neighbors

Dance Partner supporters underwrite a student’s annual participation at The Wooden Floor. Dance Partner students know there is someone outside of their family standing in their corner, encouraging them to overcome challenges and achieve success in school and life. Dance Partners and students stay connected through pen pal letters and optional visits at events and on campus.

A group of committed supporters who form a neighborhood to inspire our youth to succeed. Annual and sustaining monthly gifts provide the support our students can count on.

ALUMNI SUCCESS

“We all win and move upward and forward together.” “After graduating from The Wooden Floor, I flew across the country to upstate New York where I attended Cornell University. As a first-generation college student, I moved with both ambition and caution. Ambition because I wanted to dream big and achieve those dreams. Caution because I knew what it took to get there. I knew the sacrifices my parents made. I can confidently say that I would not be where I am today, if not, in part, because of The Wooden Floor. See, The Wooden Floor doesn’t just impact the life of the student, they impact the families and communities and future generations. When a dancer graduates high school and college, and eventually launches into their career, the successes are not just their own. The entire family reaps the benefits too. We all win and move upward and forward together.”

Tatiana, Class of 2011 Tatiana was a The Wooden Floor Sage Hill Scholar and went on to graduate from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Economics and Management in 2015. She says the free SAT and ACT test prep courses from The Wooden Floor were critical for her to gain admission to college, and while in college, she earned a yearly scholarship from The Wooden Floor. After graduating, she began her career as an absence consultant to innovate and implement best-inclass employee leave benefits. She also volunteers at The Wooden Floor as a part of the Alumni Professional Network, and Denver Kids where she mentors a young Latina teen. Tatiana is also a community leader, serving on the board of the Denver chapter of ALPFA, the Association of Latino Professionals for America, and leverages social media to inspire others to lead more confident and intentional lives.
