At The Wooden Floor, we love dance. It’s powerful. It has the ability to encourage our youth to think differently about themselves, to push through obstacles, and emerge as strong and confident leaders.
It’s why our students call us their second home, why on the dance floor they feel supported, able to embody who they really are.
It’s why, when partnered with our academic, college and career readiness, and family services, 100 percent of our graduates do what less than half of their socioeconomic peers have done – finish high school on time and enroll in higher education for 19 consecutive years.
Through dance, The Wooden Floor provides a solid platform for advancement and success.
Dance moves our youth. Forward.
“It feels really happy and fun to dance, since you get to make your own movements - and if you don’t make your own movements, you can just follow along. I am nervous but excited to express myself on stage in front of other people. If I do mess up – The Wooden Floor taught me to “mess up full out”. It means to not be afraid to mess up, because no one is perfect.”
Xavier joined The Wooden Floor in 2021 and is in 5th grade at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School where he has a 3.9 GPA. He has his sights set on becoming an engineer or computer programmer. Xavier has been practicing his skills at school by being “the classroom computer fixer.” His older sister Danna is also performing in The Wooden Floor’s 40th Annual Concert.
"Iamnervousbutexcitedtoexpress myselfonstageinfrontofother people.IfIdomessup–TheWooden Floortaughtmeto“messupfullout”.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and our staff, it is my utmost honor to welcome you to our 40th Annual Concert: Limitless, and the celebration of our 40th Anniversary. The Wooden Floor’s new mission statement is to inspire and transform the lives of young people through the power of dance and access to higher education. It speaks to our organization’s solid foundation that we provide to our students and their families; it speaks to our positive influence and leadership in our community; and most of all, it speaks to the uplifting beacon of hope that we become when we unite behind helping one another.
Since our founding in 1983, The Wooden Floor has served nearly 100,000 young people through our year-round services and Dance Free Weeks, our community engagement efforts. We have evolved from a ballet summer pilot project for 40 students under the vision of Founder Beth Burns, and we have grown over four decades into a holistic, creative youth development organization, which has received recognition both nationally and internationally.
As we look ahead to our next 40 years, The Wooden Floor’s guiding principle states, “We are pioneers…past, present, and future,” and it is critical that we continue to evolve and grow to meet the current and future needs of our students as they enter the 21st Century workforce, as leaders who will shape Orange County and our world.
We cannot have our important outcomes without you. Join us as we step forward together into our next 40 years of impact, and for the future generations of students to follow.
Sincerely,
Theresa Allen CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, THE WOODEN FLOORLimitless. This year’s 40th Annual Concert title says so much with just one word. Our new Artistic Director Jennifer Bassage Bonfil and I did consider adding a second word to define limitless to what or where. We decided to keep it open-ended as we believe our students, our organization, and our community are limitless in all we do.
Limitless is about our students and their experiences. Their limitless belief in themselves, and in each other, which permeates all they strive to accomplish each day. The artmaking that you will witness on stage is the embodiment of the creativity, focus, and determination each child brings. It is the personal learnings, which provides the confidence and courage in each child to pursue their bold visions for their lives, both in school and in life.
Limitless encapsulates our Board of Directors and staff’s endless drive to innovate and ensure we maintain the high-quality programming and outcomes which we have become known for. Our new logo, unveiled earlier this year, is emblematic of this symbiotic connection between our students, families, supporters, and staff coming together as “one community” to move young people forward.
Limitless is also the generosity of loving supporters, like you, who continue to fill our hearts with hope through your unwavering commitment to our students. As we look ahead to our next 40 years, let’s reflect on our own limitless possibilities and how we can ready ourselves to uplift more young people to know: from here, you can step anywhere.

Founded in 1983, The Wooden Floor is one of the foremost creative youth development nonprofit organizations in the country. We inspire and transform the lives of young people through the power of dance and access to higher education. In Orange County and through national licensed partners, we use a long-term approach grounded in exploratory dance education to foster the confidence and gifts within each child to innovate, communicate, and collaborate – skills necessary for success in school and in life. 100 percent of students who graduate from The Wooden Floor enroll in higher education. Our students become change agents and beacons of hope within their own families, their neighborhoods, our community, and our world.
Dance education and performance are the core transformational elements through which our youth change the way they think about themselves and aspire beyond any socioeconomic barriers. In the dance studio, exploration, creativity, and self-knowledge lead to critical life skills, confidence, leadership, teamwork, well-being, and joy.
Dance classes are offered each week in modern, ballet, improvisation, and choreography with professional faculty and live music accompanists.
We make a commitment to a dance aesthetic that values exploration, discovery, and innovation, which leads to student success in school and in life.
Dance Free Weeks™, a community engagement program held in schools throughout Santa Ana and neighboring under-served communities, reaches approximately 3,000 additional students annually.
Our young artists collaborate with recognized choreographers to create unexpected and challenging works of contemporary dance, performed in professional settings.
We make a 10-year commitment to our youth from third grade through high school and guide them through their long-term journeys to higher education.
■
Individualized one-on-one tutoring, homework assistance, remedial workshops, and access to a computer lab and resource library ensure our students meet or exceed grade-level proficiency.
■ COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
A majority of our graduates qualify for merit-based, four-year scholarships, totaling up to $10,000, from The Wooden Floor.
Through The Next Step™, college planning begins in the sixth grade. Career Panels and college tours help our youth select a degree to pursue. College application and financial aid workshops ensure they are prepared for higher education.
The Wooden Floor provides a safe space for our students to ensure they are supported in their personal and family lives. Through their journeys, creativity is fostered, commitment is fundamental, and discovery occurs every day.
An open-door policy for dealing with crises or parental concerns allows our students and families to feel supported at home. If we can’t provide immediate assistance, we refer them to a community partner.
■
Parents attend workshops related to parenting and family health.
Students receive daily mentoring by The Wooden Floor’s skilled staff, including dance faculty, tutors, and mentors.

“Before coming here I had only two friends. At The Wooden Floor I learned communication skills and I met a lot of new people. Now I have a big group of friends at school and at The Wooden Floor. I feel confident going into a new high school next year.
The Wooden Floor is like a second family. Once you get in, you are fully supported. It is part of you - you are not part of it. It is something so beautiful, breathtaking, comforting, and loving. The Wooden Floor - I thank you that I can be a part of this.”
Breeze has been a student of The Wooden Floor since she was in 4th grade. She is currently in 8th grade at MacArthur Intermediate School, where she holds a 4.4 GPA. This is her first Annual Concert performance, and she gave up participating in her middle school promotion activities to be a part of the process and not miss any rehearsal time. Breeze was admitted into Sage Hill School, a prestigious college preparatory school in Newport Coast, where she will attend high school on scholarship starting this fall. The Wooden Floor has a long history with Sage Hill School, encouraging and supporting many of our most academically gifted students to apply and gain acceptance.

At The Wooden Floor we have a deep passion for crafting exquisite art with our exceptional young people. We pride ourselves on our ability to produce original and thought-provoking work to challenge and captivate our community. That is why everything you will see on stage is innovative and compelling, perhaps unusual or curious, whether this is your first or fortieth time seeing our Annual Concert. Below, are some thoughts about what makes our approach to dance and dance-making so unique, with the hope it will heighten your appreciation for our students, who I lovingly call “super-humans,” and provide more insight into the pieces created by the choreographers in collaboration with our students.
JENNIFER BASSAGE BONFIL Artistic Director, The Wooden FloorAt The Wooden Floor we love dance because it is powerful. It encourages our youth to think differently about themselves, to push through obstacles, and emerge as strong and confident leaders. The benefits of participating specifically in our Annual Concert are that students develop their confidence, autonomy, creative problem-solving abilities, internal awareness, and presence. In other words, the Annual Concert process teaches our students the necessary skills to thrive.
Cultivating community is an essential part of what we do and this is achieved in various ways. Students work independently, in pairs, in small groups, and as a whole cast toward a common goal. Inviting, acknowledging, and integrating the student voice in the process not only strengthens the community, but also increases the students’ motivation and investment in their growth and their performance. With multiple student voices contributing to the process, our dancers gain an increased ability to receive, respond to, and value new ideas, and that contributes to heightened internal awareness. It also awakens the human spirit, promotes joy, and allows for personal uniqueness to flourish. Our students learn that what they have to say matters.
We are committed to a dance aesthetic that values exploration, discovery, and innovation, and that is why we commission original works by choreographers who co-create with our students. These highly sought-after dance makers provide movement prompts or “rules” that inspire and guide our students to create original movement. The professionals curate these ideas and mold them into the extended masterpieces you see on stage at our Annual Concert. It doesn’t matter whether you are witnessing modern dance for the first time, or you are a seasoned dance viewer, our hope is that you are moved by the originality of what you see these young people doing on stage.
The work is thought-provoking and intentional, but it is alright if you don’t “get it”. You may have ideas, thoughts, or emotions that come up for you while you are watching. Allow that to happen. When viewing dance like this, there is not a wrong answer. There was an impetus for the creation, and the dancers perform with specific motivation. That is why we are moved or invested or intrigued by what we see. It is completely acceptable though, to have your own interpretation of the dance and an understanding of what it means to you. View these original dances with an open mind, and allow the feelings to wash over you.
We are passionate about what we do, and we are committed to producing a professional quality experience with and for our students. Fueled by our organizational guiding principle that “when we give our students the best, they will rise to their best,” our artistic team is comprised of guest choreographers who are influencing and shaping the genre of contemporary dance with their ground-breaking professional works. We are known for inviting top-tier artists, designers, and production teams, who excel in their craft and areas of expertise, to collaborate on our Annual Concert.
Modern dance began in the early 19th century predominately in the United States and Germany. It was a rebellion against ballet, as the modern dance “pioneers” were breaking the traditions of the classical dance form: removing their shoes, experimenting, changing from the desire to defy gravity and “lengthen up,” to giving in to gravity and feeling grounded into the earth. Classical techniques such as Limón, Graham, Horton, etc. are often what people refer to when they say “modern dance.” We say “contemporary dance” to describe the dance we do now. It is heavily influenced by the greats and their codified modern techniques, however it lends itself to what we value in dance and dance education, providing opportunities for our students to demonstrate The Wooden Floor’s Six C’s: Collaboration, Creativity, Communication, Critical Thinking, Character, and Courage.
We extend our appreciation to you for joining us to witness our 40th Annual Concert, Limitless, showcasing the transformative power of our young people. We are grateful for your support and hope you feel inspired and changed by the hard work, dedication, and presence you see on stage. Enjoy the performance.
Choreographer Keely Garfield’s piece, Spoondrift, is the spray of seawater swept from the canopy of waves that is propelled by strong winds. Similarly, the dance surges forth in an oceanic flow of perpetual motion, boosting streams of related activity into the atmosphere. Wave upon wave of inventive movement erupts and wanes, capsizes and rolls, drifts and darts, seeking the path of least resistance. In this sense, the dancers harness the power of working collectively to create harmony and counter the undertow. As it takes myriad drops of individual water to create the ocean, Spoondrift celebrates unity while lifting each dancer’s uniqueness. Original music by Jeff Berman underscores the dance with percussive soundscapes and lyrical twists.
Choreographer John Heginbotham's two new works focus on distance and perspective. Nova considers the relatively large - the stars, the Milky Way galaxy, the great expanse of space - our vast home. Boss looks at the relatively small - like the planet Earth, California, a dance studio - these are also our home. Drawing inspiration from Quincy Jones's Space Age-era arrangements of jazz and popular standards, as well as from NASA's 1977 Voyager Program which sent two unmanned spacecraft to explore our solar system (and beyond), these dual related projects focus on what it means to live on the Pale Blue Dot, with eyes on the universe.
Artistic Director Jennifer Bassage Bonfil’s debut piece for The Wooden Floor celebrates individuality and uniqueness through dynamic shifts, circular motifs, and the interplay of structure and organized chaos. The dancers embody the essential qualities to create meaningful change and accomplish the extraordinary, both as an ensemble and individually. Set to an original score composed by Patrick Vargas and Brian Wood, Critical Mass is fueled by a youthful athleticism and a conviction that our youth are unstoppable.

In celebration of our 40th Anniversary, we will be highlighting those supporters who have made significant contributions to The Wooden Floor Endowment Fund. Since its inception in 1999 with contributions from our supporters and investment returns, the Endowment Fund has grown for over 20 years to now support 13 percent of The Wooden Floor’s annual operating budget, which includes the increased number of students served with expanded programming and services. The Wooden Floor Endowment Fund has grown to $7.5M, as of August 31, 2022, including The Wooden Floor Scholarship Endowment, now totaling $2M with direct gifts and pledges.
When students join The Wooden Floor, they make a 10-year mental commitment to us, and we need to be prepared to make a 10-year financial commitment to them. The Endowment Fund ensures we have long-term financial sustainability for our organization and programs, and it also provides annual support for innovative and high-quality programs for the students we serve today.
■ By providing more children with life-changing services and expansion of programming.
■ By supporting the transitions between high school and higher education.
■ By providing long-term financial sustainability for today, and future generations of students.

As we reflect over the past 40 years, we are heartened by the Board of Directors, staff, and supporters who came before us, as well as those who are with us today. Together have made an incredible difference in the lives of young people, our mission, and our community. We are grateful for our new supporters, and as well as those stalwart advocates for our mission, many of whom have been with The Wooden Floor over several decades. Together, we work tirelessly to ensure that our students and their families have hope and opportunity, to pursue their dreams for higher education and beyond. Thank you!
“At The Wooden Floor I learned the importance of community. I have never felt such a strong sense of community anywhere like how it is at The Wooden Floor. The students and staff care deeply for one another, and now being a faculty member myself, I realize how much care goes into each student. There are moments I see “a young Jocelyn” in my students, and I get quite emotional. I see my students and realize their potential is limitless and that I can now provide my perspective as an alumni, teacher, and role model. I hope my students can view me as an example that “from here you can step anywhere.”
After graduating from The Wooden Floor, Jocelyn attended California State University, Long Beach, where she earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Dance. She auditioned for the Limón Professional Training Program and was accepted with a scholarship, and moved to New York City during the pandemic to attend the program. Jocelyn returned to California and works as a faculty member at The Wooden Floor and also as an Assistant Manager and Instructor at Club Pilates. She dreams of attending a graduate program in the near future to receive a Master’s in Dance Education or Choreography.
“At The Wooden Floor I learned theimportanceof community.Ihave never felt such a strongsenseof communityanywhere like how it is at The Wooden Floor.”
