ABOUT US

I AM THE WOODEN FLOOR.

I am a place that inspires youth to thrive. I help them strip away the labels that other people put on them until all that’s left is an individual brimming with potential. I am a safe place. I am a national model and a jewel of the community. I am a solid foundation from where kids can step anywhere they want. Because with me, they find their confidence. They learn excellence. And they learn how to move. Forward.

THE WOODEN FLOOR 2011

The Wooden Floor is a 28 year-old nonprofit organization that annually gives 375 underserved local youth the tools to live fuller, healthier lives, through a unique approach grounded in dance. We make a long-term investment in each of these young people. They engage in intensive dance education, coupled with focused academic and family support programs, that changes the way they make decisions, helping them discover and pursue their full potential.

I AM THE WOODEN FLOOR:

“I’ve become a better person at The Wooden Floor, more well rounded. Dance helps you feel confident in who you are, and makes you able to inspire others. This summer, my mom plans to get her high school diploma at the same time as me. In the fall, I will be the first in my family to go to college, and I know if I go, my little brother will most likely go too. College will help us have a good life for ourselves and our kids, we won’t have to worry as much as our parents did.” Maria Elena has been at The Wooden Floor since she was nine years old. She will attend UCLA this fall, double majoring in Math and Biology with a minor in Dance.

WELCOME

W

elcome and thank you for being here to support the youth of The Wooden Floor as they perform in our 28th Annual Concert, True. I continue to be amazed at the commitment these young students make to these performances, to their work in The Wooden Floor studios, and to their academic success in school. Through this commitment, both from the students and from the staff at The Wooden Floor, we continue to see the immense growth and transformation of these young people and their families. As an organization, we continue to stay True to our mission: to empower low-income youth from diverse backgrounds to build self esteem, self discipline, and a sense of accomplishment through dance, academic, and family programs - and our values: respect, excellence, community, and stewardship.

THE WOODEN FLOOR 2011

As a result of this focus on our mission & values, we continue to see 100 percent of graduates from The Wooden Floor enrolling in college, many of them the first in their family to do so. As we look to the future, we will continue to execute our mission to the fullest of our capacity, and we want to increase the number of youth we serve annually beyond our current 375 students; to see our artistic footprint continue to grow beyond Southern California; and to see more and more of our alumni achieve their full potential. This growth of The Wooden Floor, and its impact can only occur with your support, and by finding others who can join us in supporting this mission. As I conclude my third year as Chair of this wonderful organization, I want to thank my fellow Board Members, our Executive & Artistic Director, Melanie Ríos Glaser, and the rest of the staff for their help and support. My wife, Yvonne, and I became dedicated to The Wooden Floor after attending our first concert many years ago, in the early days when the organization was operating in a single studio facility on Santa Ana’s 4th Street. We have witnessed tremendous growth through the years and remain deeply committed to helping The Wooden Floor increase its impact within the community. We look forward to many more years of witnessing these young people entering The Wooden Floor, finding a place where they can be themselves, and making their goals and dreams a reality.

DAMIEN JORDAN CHAIR, THE WOODEN FLOOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS

W

e are so pleased that you are here to experience The Wooden Floor’s 28th concert season with us. Over the trajectory of the last ten years The Wooden Floor has steadily amassed a remarkable list of artistic collaborators, including commissions from choreographers well established in the field for their contributions to the genre of contemporary dance. To name a few: choreographers Sally Silvers, Mark Haim, Nami Yamamoto, Sean Curran, and Scott Wells; the Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation; scenic designers Luke Hegel-Cantarella and Kate Edmunds; lighting designers Jim Ingalls and Ben Tusher; composers Bruce Andrews and Allan Terricciano; visual artist Bill Viola; and costume designer Jennifer Vaughan. Susan Rethorst and John Heginbotham join the group with two new commissions this year. The line up for the year to come is also very exciting! These artists recognize that what is happening here is important. They fall in love with our mission, the dancers, and the organization’s dedication to supporting a substantial artistic process. The exchange between the artists and the young dancers ignites the transformation that helps these young people dodge their default future and take hold of the possibility for a fuller life. As a result, we are now a nationally recognized model and we are receiving many visitors who wish to emulate the pioneering work of The Wooden Floor. The Wooden Floor reaffirms its commitment to creating courageous, adventuresome, and significant works of dance because of the astounding results we accomplish through this approach. It is deeply moving to work with those individuals, foundations, and corporations who decide to invest so generously in these young people through The Wooden Floor’s point of view. Thank you for helping us lead the way.

THE WOODEN FLOOR 2011

2011 HONOREE

THE WOODEN FLOOR 2011 HONOREE:

Mrs. Richard Steele

Over the past two decades, Mrs. Richard Steele has been an understated donor whose consistent support has impacted generations of students at The Wooden Floor. Mrs. Steele’s love for the transformational depth of dance for underserved youth has manifested itself through the years by her involvement in a variety of the organization’s programs and activities.

As a founding member of our Neighbors support group, she has provided volunteer and underwriting support for The Wooden Floor’s year-round programs. During many holiday seasons, Mrs. Steele has joined with fellow supporters in the annual gathering to wrap gifts for the students, and, when she cannot attend, is sure to donate to make sure each and every child received a holiday gift. Mrs. Steele has always been aware that her timely support has been crucial to helping launch the organization through its next stage of evolution. Clearly, thanks to her vision, The Wooden Floor has been able to continue to grow its dream of pioneering excellence in the field of arts for youth.

www.TheWoodenFloor.org

The Annual Concert has always been dear to her, as she has been a faithful patron and underwriter– known to bring a group of friends and family with her to experience the performances along with a healthy amount of snacks to keep the young artists energized. Mrs. Steele’s favorite part of each concert was the opportunity to interact with the young dancers during intermission and learn their individual stories. According to her daughter, Elizabeth Holden, Mrs. Steele “particularly enjoyed her visits to the studio where they would sit in the round and she would take the time to talk with the students. She liked being up close and personal with the students and believes the rigorous immersion in their dance training is what makes for such a serious difference in their lives.”

OUR PROMISE

Our Promise

Onstage, The Wooden Floor distills what it has been doing brilliantly for 28 years: Living the art of being there for each other. As a forward-looking non-profit, we continue to lead through our innovative youth development model grounded in dance, and supported by academic and family services.

We make a promise to our students…

From here, you can step anywhere. We promise each and every one of our students that we will see them through high school and on to college. Underserved youth beat the odds by being the first in their families to go to college.

We need your help…

You and your fellow community members are the key to keeping this promise alive. Almost all of our 375 students attend The Wooden Floor free of charge. We raise over 90% of overall costs from private sources and generous individuals, corporations, and foundations, just like you.

Our promise to you…

We will continue our 28-year history as your responsible and sustainable non-profit partner and thoughtfully steward your gifts as investments in the futures of our students. Only together can we ensure our community’s underserved youth have a safe haven, loving and mentoring relationships, as well as the tools they need to succeed.

How you can help…

WHAT TO EXPECT

Those of you in the audience today who are long time friends of The Wooden Floor know that our concerts are far from the sphere of traditional dance. Because we are passionate about what we do, we get very excited by first time audience members too, some of whom might be new to contemporary dance and our approach to dance-making. With that in mind, I have articulated answers to questions that I hear often. I hope it helps to bring you closer to these deeply conceived dances made by thoughtful and committed youth and artists. Melanie Ríos Glaser Executive & Artistic Director, The Wooden Floor

What is this kind of dance? Modern dance began in the late 19th century, primarily in the United States and Germany. Like modern art and music, it is often experimental and iconoclastic. Because it’s been around for more than a hundred years, most of the pioneering forms are considered ‘classical’ modern. ‘Contemporary dance’ is frequently used to refer to dance that is choreographed today. If you really want to talk shop, you can use the terms ‘new dance’ or ‘experimental dance’. Why are the dancers barefoot? Isadora Duncan, modern dance pioneer, began to dance barefoot as a symbol of liberation. Being barefoot allows you to be in contact with the ground, a salient trait of contemporary dance. Why does The Wooden Floor perform contemporary dance rather than classical ballet? New work is created in collaboration with the dancers. The choreographers commissioned by The Wooden Floor are keenly focused on bringing our young artists into the creative process. The dance includes who they are and what they have to say. We value inventiveness and exploration over imitation, primarily because there’s so much more learning and growth involved. In ballet there’s often a story line, these dances don’t seem to have a narrative. What do they mean? Through reflecting on associations and sensations that arise within you while you watch, you can construct your own meaning—or simply enjoy what is going on—like watching nature. What is your experience? The you is the subjective experience that contemporary art encourages us to tap into. There might not be a story or “message” in the dances but a multiplicity of possible interpretations and meanings—isn’t that much more fun?

THE WOODEN FLOOR 2011

Do I have to study contemporary dance to ‘get it’? Not at all! New audiences may stumble because they try too hard. Do keep an open mind though, as the work intends to be thought provoking. It is not light entertainment. It was created for deeper nourishment, and so may require more chewing and slower digestion for full savoring.

13

Why is The Wooden Floor’s Annual Concert important? We bring choreographers who are shaping the world of contemporary dance into an intense artmaking process with the young dancers in our program. The Wooden Floor’s compelling vision also draws a remarkable group of artistic collaborators, who together design the lighting, costumes, and sets. These artists are among the best in their field! Minority youth have a voice through our dances, they bring their background and identity to a world class art-making process. The performances break down ethnic, gender, and age stereotypes about who can inspire, create, perform, and contribute to the evolution of the genre of contemporary dance.

THE WOODEN FLOOR 2011

Too

In creating the solos for each dancer involved in Too, Rehearsal Assistant Karinne Keithley Syers and I looked for where we could ‘meet’ each participant, to find their strengths, humor, and power. These are scattered through the piece, framed by groupings that range from contained and eerie to near chaos. I never begin making work from a specific intention. I take images to the dancers and respond to what arises to enter into a dialogue with the piece as it takes on life. Too became ‘about’ its dancers, their energy and the contexts I could create for it and out of it. I invited the arbitrary, the ridiculous, the exaggerated, the uncool. SUSAN RETHORST, CHOREOGRAPHER

ABOUT THE DANCES

Grounded in 23 individual solos, Too uses radical juxtaposition of both movement and sound. Ranging from spooky to saucy, but never earnest, the movement is pulled from the everyday and speaks of the beauty in the mundane, right here, right now.

Pieces of Wood

The title for Pieces of Wood took a long time. Other titles including Terrarium, Africanized Bees, and Woody made the short list. This was a situation in which the difficulty came from too many possibilities rather than too few. As a result, the three movements of the dance each have a name. Clapping and Square Dance will speak (hopefully loudly) for themselves, and Swarm emerged as the likeliest title for a dance which features ninety-nine performers. Each movement is set to the music of the legendary American composer, Steve Reich. His percussive, elegant scores provide the backbone of the piece. In his Clapping Music, the dancers first provide the music and then later the dance. In Music for Pieces of Wood, performed by the Los Angeles Percussion Quartet, the dancers behave like a rigorously organized insect colony; each individual dances purposefully to realize the goal of the the hive. JOHN HEGINBOTHAM, CHOREOGRAPHER

www.TheWoodenFloor.org

True or False: I was born in the Nederlands

The intent was to capture snippets of the youth as I saw and heard them when they were “being themselves” at The Wooden Floor. I was interested in getting to know them again and learning what it was like to walk in their shoes. We sang, we made noises, we danced, but mostly we talked. Through this process we created material that was later deconstructed and re-assembled to show some of the nuance of their lives, teasing out how pop culture has influenced their walk, their talk, and their song. The art we make at The Wooden Floor usually involves an intense process of discovery and risk, often unveiling difficult themes. From those themes social commentary emerged on the stereotypes that affect minority youth. The True or False statements in the piece crystallized the intent of the work; they challenge possible assumptions, they reveal information while protecting the speakers, and they can deliver messages that will hopefully engage the viewer in having to access an internal dialogue in regards to the issues raised. My job will be done if we chip away at some of those stereotypes and replace them with what is true about the young people in this work: they are audacious, they are funny, and they are full of promise. I AM THE WOODEN FLOOR:

Genovpetry, Class of 2005

I am a strong individual, disciplined, and proud of the accomplishments I have achieved; I am The Wooden Floor. “I am fortunate to have been one of the thousands of lives The Wooden Floor has changed. The eight meaningful years I spent here empowered my sense of self in ways I could have never imagined. I am the first in my family to obtain higher education because I was fortunate to receive a scholarship from The Wooden Floor. However, I am not the only one, as my younger sister, Marbel Calderon, who is also an alumna of The Wooden Floor is currently pursuing her Master’s degree.” Genovpetry graduated in June of 2009 from UC Davis, with a B.A. in English and Sociology, with an emphasis in Law & Society. She enjoys working at Community Action Partnership of Orange County, which aims to eliminate and prevent the causes and effects of poverty. Genovpetry recently applied to law school, and hopes to begin in the fall of 2011.

I AM THE WOODEN FLOOR:

Bailey, Class of 2015

I am The Wooden Floor… and today I’m going to dance. “I didn’t know about modern dance until I came to The Wooden Floor. It has opened up the way I think and made it easier for me to connect to others. Especially when I come here, the friendships I’ve made are stronger, because everyone is doing what I am doing, working as hard as I am working. The concerts really make us feel like we are all special in our own way.” Bailey has been at The Wooden Floor since 2008. She would like to go on to study Zoology because she “loves animals, loves the zoo, and loves science.”

I AM THE WOODEN FLOOR:

Eliseo, Class of 2019 THE WOODEN FLOOR 2011

I am The Wooden Floor because I am learning how to dance and becoming strong and healthy.

29

“I like coming to The Wooden Floor because I learn moves which make me strong. I have been here for two years now. I have one brother and two sisters who are here at The Wooden Floor with me, and one sister that graduated a long time ago. I want to graduate, too, and go to college so I can be smart and get a good job.” Eliseo is nine years old, and is in dance level two. He attends Muir Fundamental Elementary School, and takes frequent advantage of The Wooden Floor’s tutoring program to keep up his good grades.

STUDENT SUCCESS

I AM THE WOODEN FLOOR:

Emilio, Class of 2016

www.TheWoodenFloor.org

In addition to dancing, Emilio has taken advantage of The Wooden Floor’s Family Service programs. He is doing excellent in school, and he knows he wants to go to college, but he doesn’t yet know what he wants to study.

1102 ROOLF NEDOOW EHT

“My favorite memory so far at The Wooden Floor was leading tours at the wine tasting fundraiser. I liked meeting all those new people. Right now, I’m having fun practicing for my first Annual Concert performance. I am in the piece True or False: I was Born in the Nederlands, and in one part, two people lift me up and I feel like saying “yay!” everytime! I have learned that there’s more to dance than the dance moves, like having to trust people when they lift me in the air, and I learned working in groups is important - you can do a lot of stuff with groups. I am nervous to dance in front of all those people, but my family will definitely be there. I haven’t been doing six months of rehearsing so they can stay in the house and just watch television.”

THE WOODEN FLOOR 2011

I am The Wooden Floor because I make up what it is.
