Dance is the At The Wooden Floor, we love dance. It’s powerful. It has the ability to encourage our youth to think differently about themselves, to push through obstacles, and emerge as strong and confident leaders. It’s why our students call us their second home, why on the dance floor they feel supported, able to embody who they really are. It’s why, when partnered with our academic, college preparatory, and family services, 100 percent of our graduates do what only about 30 percent of their socioeconomic peers have done—finish high school on time and enroll in higher education for ten consecutive years. Through dance, The Wooden Floor provides a solid platform for advancement and success. Dance moves our youth. Forward.

Yaireth, Class of 2020 Future anesthesiologist
“I wouldn’t be involved in dance if it wasn’t for The Wooden Floor. Normally, places like this don’t appear in the road for me, so my life just wouldn’t be as joyful. Since my first year at The Wooden Floor, it has felt magical. It is very hard juggling everything that is scheduled in my life, but it is all worth it in the end. When you perform on stage and see the lights and people actually sitting in front to see you, it is amazing. The process starts with nothing, really, then in the end we have this big piece. We all coordinate and contribute. It is pretty cool seeing it build up through our rehearsals and effort. You make one movement, which equates to one section, then that makes the whole. It’s neat what you can accomplish in a group.”

Welcome
W
elcome to The Wooden Floor’s 32nd Annual Concert. It is my honor to experience this event as the organization’s Chairman of the Board of Directors. This organization is a beaming source of pride for me and my wife Jane. Today you will catch a glimmer of the magic that is accomplished by the students of The Wooden Floor through the organization’s incredibly effective programs. You will witness their power as performers, and also as courageous young people overcoming obstacles to make the very best out of their lives. The energy of these students, focusing their minds, bodies, and souls so diligently, is palpable, and will be evident once they take the stage. Then, they will take that drive and determination they develop every day at The Wooden Floor and use it to break free from their challenging life circumstances. They will all go to college, many being the first in their family to do so. They will inspire us, and they will make this world a better place, just as so many of their predecessors have done. After seeing these talented youth on stage today, the Board and staff invite you to take the next step and plan a personal visit to The Wooden Floor’s energetic campus to see the students and mission in action. It is our hope that you will feel and understand how the work accomplished day in and day out at this amazing organization is changing lives and changing our community for the better. Our students look forward to seeing you again soon. Enjoy the performance! Sincerely,
James A. Driscoll, Chairman of the Board The Wooden Floor
D
ance is the center of student transformation at The Wooden Floor, and the Annual Concert is the external manifestation of the accomplishment of the entire community working together to ensure our students’ success. When we begin, in the dance studio there is nothing but the floor and the empty space. The young dancers start to come in. They bring all of themselves and they turn to the choreographer with expectant eyes. Where there is nothing, they will make something and they will do this together. That’s how we make dances at The Wooden Floor: through research, creative problem solving, and teamwork. After the phase of discovery, we move into assembling the bits and pieces we have created. It usually takes three hours to create one to two minutes of choreography. That is how much work our students have dedicated to this performance. Afterward, the way they feel and their sense of accomplishment remains with them for years to come. The way we approach the art-making process is the same way we approach everything at The Wooden Floor. Through assembling the individual talents and strengths within our community: Board, staff, families, and supporters, we are able to create a solid platform for our students to achieve and succeed in school and in life. Over our 10-year journey with each student, we collectively work stridently to provide the resources and tools to boost not only their internal confidence, but also their resilience to overcome life’s challenges and build a sense of hope for their brighter futures. In turn, they express their gratitude to you through the generosity of their performance. Join with us as we develop plans to make a difference in the lives of more young people in under-served communities through the power of dance and access to higher education. The impact of our mission is real, and we see it every day...one changed life can change a community. With warmth and gratitude,

About Us
About The Wooden Floor
Since 1983, over 80,000 young lives have been touched by our mission. At our Santa Ana campus, The Wooden Floor annually gives 375 under-served local youth the tools to live fuller, healthier lives through a unique approach grounded in dance, partnered with academic and family service programs. We are proud that since 2005, 100 percent of our graduates have completed high school on time and immediately enrolled in college—at a rate of about three times the national average for their socioeconomic peers. Here’s how we do it:
Dance Education & Performance Opportunities
Dance education and performance are the core transformational elements through which youth change the way they think about themselves and aspire beyond the grip of socioeconomic barriers. In the dance studio, exploration, creativity, and self-knowledge lead to confidence, leadership, teamwork, well-being, and joy. Dance Classes
Creative Development
Over 50 dance classes are offered each week with professional faculty and live music accompanists.
We make a commitment to a dance aesthetic that values exploration, discovery, and innovation, which leads to the success of our students in school and in life.
On Stage
Community Engagement
Our young artists collaborate with recognized choreographers to create unexpected and challenging works of contemporary dance, performed in professional settings.
Dance Free Weeks™, introductory dance workshops held in disadvantaged schools throughout Santa Ana and neighboring cities, serve about 3,000 additional students annually.
About Us
06
Academic Services & College Preparatory Programs
We make a 10-year commitment to our youth from 3rd grade through high school, and guide them through their long-term journeys to higher education. Scholarships
Academic Programs
A majority of our graduates qualify for merit-based, 4-year scholarships totaling $4,000 to $10,000 from The Wooden Floor.
Individualized one-on-one tutoring, homework assistance, remedial workshops, and access to a computer lab and resource library ensure our students meet or exceed grade-level proficiency.
College & Career Readiness Programs
Family Services & Enrichment Programs
Prepping for college begins in the 7th grade. Career Nights and college tours help our youth select a degree to pursue. SAT training, college application, and financial aid workshops help ensure they are prepared for higher education.
To ensure they are supported in their personal and family lives, The Wooden Floor provides a safe space for our students in which creativity is fostered, commitment is fundamental, and discovery occurs every day. Relationship Building
Student Enrichment
Students receive daily mentoring by The Wooden Floor’s skilled staff, dance faculty, tutors, and volunteers. Workshops cover issues students face, including communication skills, goal setting, and positive decision-making.
Outside the dance studios and education center, The Wooden Floor provides our youth with an abundance of fieldtrips and leadership training, such as wilderness camps and arts and cultural experiences. Our aim is to expose students to new ideas and experiences, which help them learn more about their world and how they can become responsible and productive citizens.

Ismael, Class of 2015 Future mechanical engineer
“I am different when I’m on stage. In real life, I’m quiet and shy, and I usually just wait until people notice me. On stage, they have to notice me. This concert will be a dramatic one for me because I am a graduating senior. All the hard work is paying off—we made it. We’re going to college. All of us. I’ll be studying to be a mechanical engineer because I’m good at math. Dance helps with my math in a way, since they both are just problem solving. In the dance studio, you’re told to do something, and you have to figure out how to do it using the steps they teach you. Math is no different. The staff are always encouraging us to go to college, and I really can’t wait to go. I want to learn more about what I don’t know, and continue on this journey. I am excited to see what my future will be.”

What to Expect
What is this form of dance?
Modern dance began in the late 19th century, primarily in the United States and Europe. Like modern art and modern music it is often experimental. It is looking for ways in which to reveal what is currently relevant and to grow from its past. Because it has been around for more than a hundred years, most of the pioneering forms are considered “classical modern.” Contemporary dance is frequently used to refer to dance that is choreographed today.
Why are the dancers sometimes barefoot?
Dancers don’t necessarily have to be barefoot in contemporary dance, but in modern dance, it began with Isadora Duncan, a pioneer who danced barefoot as a symbol of liberation. Being barefoot allows you to be in contact with the ground, a salient trait of contemporary dance.
?
Do I have to study contemporary dance to “get it”?
Not at all! New audiences may stumble because they try too hard. Do keep an open mind though, as the work intends to be thought provoking. It is not of the lighter entertainment variety. It was created for deeper nourishment, and so may require more chewing and slower digestion for full savoring.
What to Expect
14
What to Expect on Stage The Annual Concerts at The Wooden Floor are far from ordinary. We are passionate about what we do and we get very excited about first time audience members who might be new to contemporary dance and our approach to dance making. With that in mind, I have articulated answers to questions that I hear often. I hope they help to bring you closer to these deeply conceived dances, made by thoughtful and committed youth and artists. Melanie Ríos Glaser, Artistic Director & Co-CEO
? ? ?
?
In ballet there is often a story line, these dances don’t seem to have a narrative. What do they mean?
Through reflecting on your own associations and sensations that arise for you, you can construct your own meaning or simply enjoy what is going on—like watching nature. What are you experiencing? The “you” is the subjective experience that contemporary art encourages tapping into. There might not be a story or theme in the dances but a multiplicity of possible interpretations and meanings—isn’t that fun?
Why are there parts with no music?
Silence allows us to see the dance’s own phrasing and tempo. Silence is an important counterpoint to movement in the way that stillness too is a part of dance.
Why does The Wooden Floor perform contemporary dance?
New work is created in collaboration with the dancers. How exciting to work on a dance piece that has been made for you and with your input! The choreographers commissioned by The Wooden Floor are keenly focused on bringing our young dancers into the creative process. There is so much learning involved when you are also part of the choreographic process. We value inventiveness and exploration over imitation as dancers bring their own experiences and points of view to the work.
Why is The Wooden Floor’s Annual Concert important?
We bring choreographers who are shaping the world of contemporary dance into an intense art-making process with the young dancers in our organization. The Wooden Floor’s compelling vision also draws a remarkable group of artistic collaborators, who together design the lighting, costumes, and sets. These artists are among the best in their field! Under-served youth have a voice through our dances; they bring their background and identity to a world-class art-making process. The performances break down ethnic, gender, and age stereotypes about who can inspire, create, perform, and contribute to the evolution of the genre of contemporary dance.

About the Dances
About the Dances
16
About the Dances Playground Melanie Ríos Glaser, Choreographer This dance talks back to us. It is made out of bits and pieces almost exclusively created by the dancers. Through prompts and tasks, we give the dancers the freedom to access the necessary modes for making work by using their intuition, spontaneity, humor, intelligence, self-awareness, and creativity. Particularities and personalities are sought out, celebrating the individual even when forming a part of the group. The dance aims for an evolved sense of empathy and compassion.
The Hundred in the One Faye Driscoll, Choreographer This new work plays with the impact of image, the untraceable ripple of cause and effect, and the epic drama present in a simple hello. Familiar images are mixed-up and linked together to create new social dances and sculptural interconnected forms. Performers playfully shift, twist, and stumble into and through each other, balancing individual desires with the tide of community. This new work is a study in interconnected group forms and how everyday acts become heightened towards fantasy.
Skylight John Heginbotham, Choreographer This new work is set to solo guitar music by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. It is fast-paced, athletic, and tender. Inspired in part by the idea of a desert, clean and far, full of vanishing horizons and hovering silver pools, the dance is concerned with vibrant distance, strange reflection, traveling alone and in packs, and occasionally with uncertain obstruction. The performers invite the question, “What’s behind that?” —and then suddenly, there is no that.

lLead Class Partner lClass Partner Class Partners are individuals, companies, and organizations who support the academic, college and career readiness, and college scholarship programs that each of The Wooden Floor’s 10 graduating classes of students need to make their dreams of higher education a reality.
pDance Partner Dance Partner supporters make a difference in the lives of individual students by underwriting one student’s annual participation at The Wooden Floor. Dance Partner students know there is someone outside of their family standing in their corner, encouraging them to overcome challenges and achieve success in school and life. Dance Partners and students stay connected through pen pal letters and optional visits at events and on campus.

Student Success
Marbel Calderon, Class of 2006 My story always begins with The Wooden Floor. As young as middle school, I was able to hear all about the new construction for The Wooden Floor’s current building and tour the offices of MVE Architects—designers for the building—which opened my eyes to my possibilities. I had to become a professional who was able to take something and create a beautiful space for people who are deserving and in need of it. The Wooden Floor made it possible for me to see that I could become this through continuing onto college, as my sister had done the year before. Since then, I have focused on perseverance to complete a project I desire and pass along the words imparted to me by my mother, “that education is truly important because it is one of the few things in life no one can ever take away from you.” The Wooden Floor is an organization that needs to be shared with all of America. I hope that one day I can design a place that is driven to help lower income children excel and understand that everything is possible. I am that little girl from Santa Ana growing up and thanking The Wooden Floor for all that I am today.
Marbel has a Master’s Degree in Interior Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. In addition to starting her own design firm, Design for Tomorrow, LLC, she works full-time at NicholsBooth Architects in San Francisco as an interior designer for commercial projects.
