STUDENT SUCCESS
DI Sa TnH Ec AeN S W E R At The Wooden Floor, we love dance. It’s powerful. It has the ability to encourage our youth to think differently about themselves, to push through obstacles, and emerge as strong and confident leaders. It’s why our students call us their second home, why on the dance floor they feel supported, able to embody who they really are. It’s why, when partnered with our academic, college and career readiness, and family services, 100 percent of our graduates do what less than half of their socioeconomic peers have done— finish high school on time and enroll in higher education for 14 consecutive years. Through dance, The Wooden Floor provides a solid platform for advancement and success.
Dance moves our youth. Forward.
STUDENT SUCCESS
Christopher, Class of 2020 “Dance feels like an endless piece of art. There are no limits. You’re in your own space, your own happiness. It’s like something that cures you, makes you feel better, and teaches you a lot. Dance has helped me learn to collaborate with people at school. Before, I didn’t want to talk to anyone, I was always by myself. Now, in group projects, I work well with people. It taught me to stay focused, to listen, to learn, and to concentrate. The Wooden Floor is a great place that changes lives and people’s perspectives of their lives. It is a place that teaches something different to kids who may not have the opportunity and it is a place that gives better opportunities for life. It is a place where I feel free."
This is Christopher’s sixth Annual Concert. He is a sophomore at Godinez Fundamental High School where he holds a 3.8 GPA. He is interested in photography and journalism, and would like to study at the University of Redlands or UC Santa Cruz.

WELCOME
Welcome to The Wooden Floor’s 35th Annual Concert, Unifying Catalysts. It is an honor, and my good fortune, to be Chairman of the Board of Directors of this incredible organization as we usher in a moment of great celebration and strategic forward movement. We celebrate the honor of being trusted by our community for 35 years to change their children’s lives through the power of dance and through access to higher education. We celebrate the opening of our second location this past spring at The Wooden Floor at Depot at Santiago, which has allowed us to serve 100 additional students. Now The Wooden Floor is serving a total of nearly 500 children, and their families, helping to change the trajectories of their lives for many generations to come by focusing on higher education. The most exciting part for my wife, Ginger, and me as we look to the next 35 years of this organization, is to know that this is just the first step in serving even more young people who need us. The Board of Directors and staff have squarely taken aim at ensuring The Wooden Floor remains a leader in creative youth development, and will be investing in our ability to move even more young people forward in the years to come. We cannot do this without the support of our community. Please join us! Plan a visit to The Wooden Floor to see our youth and programs in motion. We are convinced that you will be inspired to do all you can to be connected to the success of these bright and beautiful children.
Our 35th Annual Concert is a perfect example of a unifying catalyst. As our concert title suggests, it is a moment where we all come together as one community to let our best selves shine, to be generous and supportive of one another, and to ignite a spark to encourage each other to grow and evolve. As an organization, we've grown and evolved over the past year with the opening of our second location, welcoming many new students, families, and staff members including new Artistic Director, Falon Baltzell. She is advancing our approach of teaching to the whole child and demonstrating how art-making can lead to critical life skills for our young people. Our legacy of bringing together renowned choreographers who are shaping the genre of contemporary dance with professional artistic and production teams ensures that our students are lifted up to reach new personal milestones and those accomplishments transcend into all parts of their lives—in the studio, in school, and at home. The Wooden Floor is also reaching new milestones as we seek to make a difference in the lives of more children, both locally and nationally. At this pivotal time in our 35-year history, we are taking stock of the moments that unify us, the community that connects us, and the values that center us. These are catalysts to reach greater heights for the students and families we serve. As we embark on the next step in The Wooden Floor's journey, I encourage you to join us as we seek to inspire more young people and build our community for many generations to come. With gratitude,
Sincerely,
Arthur Ong, Chairman of the Board, The Wooden Floor

ABOUT
About
THE WOODEN FLOOR
Founded in 1983, The Wooden Floor is one of the foremost creative youth development nonprofit organizations in the country. We transform the lives of young people in lowincome communities through the power of dance and access to higher education. In Orange County, and through national licensed partners, we use a long-term approach grounded in exploratory dance education to foster the confidence and gifts within each child to innovate, communicate, and collaborate—skills necessary for success in school and in life. 100 percent of students who graduate from The Wooden Floor immediately enroll in higher education. Our students become change agents and beacons of hope within their own families, their neighborhoods, our community, and our world.
Dance Education & Performance Opportunities
Dance education and performance are the core transformational elements through which our youth change the way they think about themselves and aspire beyond the grip of socioeconomic barriers. In the dance studio, exploration, creativity, and self-knowledge lead to critical life skills, confidence, leadership, teamwork, well-being, and joy. Dance Education
On Stage
Dance classes are offered each week in modern, ballet, and contact improv with professional faculty and live music accompanists.
Our young artists collaborate with recognized choreographers to create unexpected and challenging works of contemporary dance, performed in professional settings.
Creative Development We make a commitment to a dance aesthetic that values exploration, discovery, and innovation, which leads to student success in school and in life.
Community Engagement Dance Free Weeks™, a community engagement program held in schools throughout Santa Ana and neighboring under-served communities, reaches about 3,000 additional students annually.

Academic Services & College and Career Readiness Programs We make a 10-year commitment to our youth from third grade through high school, and guide them through their long-term journeys to higher education. Academic Programs
Individualized one-on-one tutoring, homework assistance, remedial workshops, and access to a computer lab and resource library ensure our students meet or exceed grade-level proficiency.
College Scholarships A majority of our graduates qualify for merit-based, four-year scholarships, totaling up to $10,000, from The Wooden Floor.
College & Career Readiness Programs Through the Next Step©, college planning begins in the sixth grade. Career Nights and college tours help our youth select a degree to pursue. SAT and ACT training, college application, and financial aid workshops ensure they are prepared for higher education.
Family Services & Enrichment Programs
The Wooden Floor provides a safe space for our under-served students to ensure they are supported in their personal and family lives. Through their journeys, creativity is fostered, commitment is fundamental, and discovery occurs every day. Counseling & Crisis Intervention An open-door policy for dealing with crises or parental concerns allows our students and families to feel supported at home. If we can’t provide immediate assistance, we refer them to a community partner.
Family Workshops Parents attend workshops related to financial literacy, parenting, and family health. Additionally, families participate in Family Dance classes as a unit to explore topics of trust, teamwork, communication, and connectedness.
Relationship Building Students receive daily mentoring by The Wooden Floor’s skilled staff, dance faculty, tutors, and volunteers.

Paola, Class of 2025 “One of our instructors told me that if I mess up, to mess up “full out,” it is one of her famous quotes. What that means to me is, if you make a wrong movement, it’s not wrong, it’s just something you’re going to learn from. I learned to not be shy, to always speak up when you need to, and always ask questions because you can learn from your mistakes. Something else I learned here is to never give up. You can always try harder. That, and always be kind.”
Paola is a 5th grader at Heritage Elementary School. This is her second Annual Concert at The Wooden Floor. In addition to dance, she enjoys drawing.

OUR VISION
OUR VISION
15
O U R S T R AT E G I C
Vision
INSPIRING YOUNG PEOPLE. BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY. In 2009, The Wooden Floor’s Board of Directors and staff embarked on a significant strategic planning process, resulting in an ambitious 10-year Strategic Vision 2010-2020. Our organizational strengths in leadership, management, and fiscal position bring us to this time when intentional growth and advancement are needed for three key reasons.
WE MUST GO DEEPER. Our record of student success has fueled internal growth in our student body through a high retention rate. We must expand current programming to sustain outcomes for larger numbers of students on their paths to success in school and in life.
WE MUST START EARLIER. The college access landscape is rapidly changing. Four-year college eligibility is increasingly competitive, and the bar continues to rise. We must advance to help students overcome challenges to access higher education.
WE MUST SERVE MORE. Across the past five years we have been forced to turn away 80% of children who line up to enroll due to current space constraints. We are called to pursue collaborative growth opportunities to serve more children.
IT’S YOUR MOVE. To learn more and discuss how you can help, contact Dawn S. Reese, Chief Executive Officer, at 714.541.8314 ext. 136 or Dawn@TheWoodenFloor.org.
At The Wooden Floor, the whole family is supported. Izrael joined The Wooden Floor in 2016, and was followed by his brother Daren who enrolled the following year. According to their mother Sandra, The Wooden Floor has been an educational experience not only for her boys, but for her and her husband, as well. Sandra and her husband have access to parenting and communications workshops, one-on-one counseling, and other free services to help their boys succeed in school and in life.

DANCES
ABOUT THE
Dances
CAVALCADE Mark Haim, Choreographer
New York Foundation for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and Bogliasco Foundation Fellowship Awardee Working with a cast of 60 dancers, the majority of them younger students, Mark Haim's new dance is set to orchestral and chamber music by W.A. Mozart. Mostly light-hearted and sometimes poignant, amusing, and architectural, the dance is inspired by the creativity, talent, and generosity of the students at The Wooden Floor.
Unafraid Amy O’Neal, Choreographer
National Performance Network, National Dance Project, and Creative Capital Foundation Awardee Amy O’Neal’s piece is set to future-soul music by Australian band Hiatus Kayote, whose lush and imaginative textures, lyrics, and rhythms inspire the landscape of the dance. The process of this work challenges the dancers to get out of their comfort zones and be brave in their relationship to rhythm, improvisation, and to each other.
Reaction Yield Seán Curran, Choreographer
Chair, Department of Dance at NYU Tisch School of the Arts Seán Curran’s Reaction Yield originally premiered during The Wooden Floor’s inaugural Co-Creation Lab in 2017, and has been expanded in length and size in celebration of the 35th Annual Concert. This thrilling piece examines scientific concepts from chemistry, informed by choreographic playtime in the studio; an environment transformed into a dance laboratory. You will witness a co-created product that tests movement experiments about cause and effect, calculations, palindromes, and movement manipulations. This is a dance that wants to ask, “Where do I end and we begin?”

Daisy, Class of 2010 At The Wooden Floor, I learned discipline and accountability. This has helped me greatly in being professional about the way I conduct myself. I think another thing that being at The Wooden Floor has done for me is give me the confidence to know that I can achieve whatever I want. I remember my first time performing at the Irvine Barclay Theatre—I felt so important, and it gave me the confidence to pursue a career in genetics. The Wooden Floor helped lay the foundation that continues to propel me onward. It helped instill in me the sense that I was capable of achieving what I wanted, as long as I was driven and consistent about the way I approached things. I gained so much from my experience at The Wooden Floor. There is more than just learning turns and leaps, it’s about developing skills and an attitude that will help you be successful for the rest of your life.
Daisy received a BS in Genetics with a minor in Psychology from UC Davis in 2014. Following that, she worked at a genetic testing lab as well as volunteered at St. Joseph Cancer Prevention Center and at UC Irvine in their metabolic department. She is currently working on her Masters of Science in Genetic Counseling through CSU Stanislaus and expects her Genetic Counseling degree in 2019.
