DANCE

dance is the answer

At The Wooden Floor, we love dance. It’s powerful. It has the ability to encourage our youth to think differently about themselves, to push through obstacles, and emerge as strong and confident leaders. It’s why our students call us their second home, why on the dance floor they feel supported, able to embody who they really are. It’s why, when partnered with our academic, college and career readiness, and family services, 100 percent of our graduates do what less than half of their socioeconomic peers have done—finish high school on time and enroll in higher education for 12 consecutive years. Through dance, The Wooden Floor provides a solid platform for advancement and success. Dance moves our youth. Forward.

roxana, class of 2020 “I dance because it helps me express myself and it keeps me going. It gives me the motivation to keep on trying.” “I have always been a good student, but The Wooden Floor has helped me stay that way. It has given me so many positive influences and a reason to keep on trying. I’m still not sure what career I want; I’m only in eighth grade. But I do know that next year I will start at Middle College High School, and the goal is that when I finish, I will have graduated high school plus have an AA degree. This year, I am in two dances for the Annual Concert. It means I have had to learn how to manage my time. It is good for me to learn how to do that early, so I already have that skill for college. At The Wooden Floor, there are so many people that want to help you. If you're having trouble, there are people there for you. The Wooden Floor impacts lives in a huge way. I feel bad for people who aren’t here; it is a special place that anyone would love to have in their life.” Roxana is an active student at her school, serves on her school’s student council, and is also a member of The Wooden Floor’s Student Leadership Council.

WELCOME

W

O

Sincerely,

We thank you on their behalf,

elcome to The Wooden Floor’s 33rd Annual Concert. Our students, staff, and Board of Directors have so much to be proud of since the last time we gathered at the foot of this stage. The Wooden Floor is preparing to send the Class of 2016 off on their journeys to college. They are the 12th consecutive class to have 100 percent of graduates finish high school on-time and immediately enroll in higher education. In late 2015, The Wooden Floor was thrilled to announce the first licensed partner of our organization. By 2018, CityDance in Washington, DC, will begin transforming the lives of 375 youth with the model pioneered right here in Orange County. This was the result of an ambitious strategic vision set in 2009 by the Board of Directors to deepen our work for youth most in need, whom we can lift to their full potential through the power of dance and access to higher education. And now, The Wooden Floor’s Board of Directors and staff have announced that we will grow to serve 100 more children and their families by the end of 2017 at a new annex location within the Depot at Santiago workforce housing complex in Santa Ana. The developers of the property, Orange Housing Development Corporation and C&C Development, expect to break ground before the start of summer. Currently, less than one-in-four students who audition for The Wooden Floor can be accepted due to high student retention and space constraints, amplifying the need for the organization’s vision to serve more youth. We are excited to be answering the call from our community. My wife Jane and I could not be more honored to be a part of this organization, or more thrilled to do what we can to help move our community’s young people forward. Won’t you join us? The board and staff invite you to plan a visit to The Wooden Floor’s energetic campus to see our youth and programs in motion. We are convinced it will inspire you to do all that you can for these bright and beautiful children.

James A. Driscoll, Chairman of the Board, The Wooden Floor

ur 33rd Annual Concert is an opportunity for us to join together as one community in celebration of our students and their accomplishments. One of our Guiding Principles drives our performances: We believe that if our students are provided the best, they will rise to the best. We commission renowned choreographers who are heading the pack in contemporary dance—and combine them with an artistic team—to bring the highest artistic production values in benefit of our students. We know that the Annual Concert is one of the most transformative experiences at The Wooden Floor. Pairing choreographers with our students to cocreate thought-provoking dances is rare, and speaks to our belief that these young people have depth, their life experiences count, and that they bring meaning to our worlds. Each student has spent over 100 hours in the studio in preparation for the performances. Those hours not only prepare them physically, but also, everything that happens in the studio translates to the rest of their lives. Dignity: It validates their contributions. Intellect: It stretches their critical thinking skills. Soulfulness: It gives expression to their inner lives. Affirmation: They feel seen by the audience. Community: They work together towards a better world. Curiosity: They see a multiplicity of answers to the same problem. Courage: They learn to put themselves and their ideas out into our world. Peace: They take their place on earth. And when the curtain falls at the end of the performance, it is only the beginning for our students. They know you were in the audience encouraging them and will use this positive experience as a launching pad to set goals for themselves in all parts of their lives: Academically, in leadership, in higher education, and in improving relationships at home. You were a part of this experience. You. Me. We. See them there with loving eyes. Watch them bow with pride. Know that you have played a part in this bountiful journey.

ABOUT US

about the wooden floor Since 1983, over 85,000 young lives have been touched by our mission. At our Santa Ana campus, The Wooden Floor annually gives 375 under-served local youth the tools to live fuller, healthier lives through a unique approach grounded in dance, strategically integrated with academic and family service programs. We are proud that since 2005, 100 percent of our graduates have completed high school on time and immediately enrolled in college—a rate more than double the national average for their socioeconomic peers. Here’s how we do it:

dance education & performance opportunities

Dance education and performance are the core transformational elements through which our youth change the way they think about themselves and aspire beyond the grip of socioeconomic barriers. In the dance studio, exploration, creativity, and self-knowledge lead to confidence, leadership, teamwork, well-being, and joy. Dance Classes Nearly 60 dance classes are offered each week with professional faculty and live music accompanists.

Creative Development We make a commitment to a dance aesthetic that values exploration, discovery, and innovation, which leads to student success in school and in life.

On Stage Our young artists collaborate with recognized choreographers to create unexpected and challenging works of contemporary dance, performed in professional settings.

Community Engagement Dance Free Weeks™, a community engagement program held in schools throughout Santa Ana and neighboring under-served communities, reaches about 3,000 additional students annually.

ABOUT US

academic services & college and career readiness programs We make a 10-year commitment to our youth from third grade through high school, and guide them through their long-term journeys to higher education. Academic Programs Individualized one-on-one tutoring, homework assistance, remedial workshops, and access to a computer lab and resource library ensure our students meet or exceed grade-level proficiency.

College & Career Readiness Programs Prepping for college begins in the sixth grade. Career Nights and college tours help our youth select a degree to pursue. SAT training, college application, and financial aid workshops ensure they are prepared for higher education.

College Scholarships A majority of our graduates qualify for merit-based, four-year scholarships totaling $4,000 to $10,000 from The Wooden Floor.

family services & enrichment programs

To ensure they are supported in their personal and family lives, The Wooden Floor provides a safe space for our students in which creativity is fostered, commitment is fundamental, and discovery occurs every day. Relationship Building

Student Enrichment

Students receive daily mentoring by The Wooden Floor’s skilled staff, dance faculty, tutors, and volunteers. Workshops cover issues students face, including communication skills, goal setting, and positive decisionmaking.

Outside the dance studios and education center, The Wooden Floor provides our youth with an abundance of field trips and leadership training, such as wilderness camps and arts and cultural experiences. Our aim is to expose students to new ideas and experiences, which help them learn more about their world and how they can become responsible and productive citizens.

titania, class of 2016 “I dance because it is a way to learn about myself.” "When I graduate from The Wooden Floor this year, I plan to go to college to study social work. Ever since I was young, it has made me happy to help others. I want to provide other people with assistance and treat them how I would want to be treated. My goal is to help kids who don’t have parents. I have my mother and family, but I don’t have my dad by my side, so I know what it is like to not have a parent, and I want to help kids find support. The Wooden Floor has shown me how people can get together and think about others. It is, honestly, a place that is changing people’s lives, and that is something I will always carry in my heart and pass on." This fall, Titania will attend Orange Coast College and plans to later transfer to a fouryear university, becoming the second person in her family to go to college. She plans to use her education in social work to one day work with children in the foster care system.

13 WHAT TO EXPECT

what to expect

The Annual Concerts at The Wooden Floor are far from ordinary. We are passionate about what we do. We get very excited about audience members who might be new to our approach to dance-making and its effect on young people. With that in mind, I have articulated answers to questions that I hear often. I hope they help bring you closer to our approach and to these deeply conceived dances made by thoughtful and committed youth and artists. -Melanie Ríos Glaser, Artistic Director and Co-CEO

What is this form of dance that the students will perform? Contemporary dance is frequently used to refer to dance that is choreographed today. This kind of dance looks for ways to reveal what is currently relevant and to grow from its past.

Why does The Wooden Floor perform new pieces in contemporary dance? We believe each young person develops a sense of self by learning to be in their body and owning it. They get in touch with their inner life and share it with the world through expression. Through improvisation they must learn to keep an adaptive and ready mindset, and how to operate under pressure. Youth develop empathy within a diverse group of people that respectfully come together to make something wonderful happen. They flex their creative muscle through the need for original thinking, problem solving skills, exploratory learning, and innovation. Curiosity is sparked, a salient trait for a full life. A sense of accomplishment and mastery lead to self-esteem. It’s as simple as this: Our goal is for each child to develop his or her full potential through dance by having the tools to make the decisions that will shape the future of the world.

How is The Wooden Floor’s Annual Concert different than a more traditional children’s recital? The choreographers commissioned by The Wooden Floor are keenly focused on bringing our young dancers into the creative process. There is so much learning involved when they are also part of the choreographic journey. We value inventiveness over imitation as dancers bring their own experiences and points of view to the work. Through the hundreds of hours each dancer rehearses in preparation for the performance, they develop those life skills, which can translate to their futures, such as creative problem-solving, collaboration, discipline, and courage. These skills lead to success both in school and in life.

In ballet there is often a story line, these dances don’t seem to have a narrative. As an audience member, how do I know what they mean? Through reflecting on your own associations and sensations that arise for you, you can construct your own meaning or simply enjoy what is going on—like watching nature. What are you experiencing? That question is what contemporary art encourages tapping into. There might not be a story or theme in the dances, but rather a multiplicity of possible interpretations and meanings—isn’t that fun?

Why are there parts with no music? Silence allows us to see the dance’s own phrasing and tempo. Silence is an important counterpoint to movement in the way that stillness, too, is a part of dance.

Why does it sometimes seem like the dancers are performing natural everyday movement? Choreographers in the last 40 years have been using everyday movement as material for their dances because it gains new meaning onstage in the context of the dance. What seems ordinary will make you do a double take!

Why is The Wooden Floor’s Annual Concert so unique? Choreographers who are shaping the world of contemporary dance are brought into an intense, dance-making process to co-create the dances with the young people of The Wooden Floor. Our compelling vision also draws a remarkable group of collaborators, who together design the lighting, costumes, and sets. These artists are among the best in their field! Youth have a voice, and they bring their background and identity to the works. Their performances break down ethnic, gender, and age stereotypes about who can inspire, create, perform, and contribute to the evolution of the genre of contemporary dance.

DANCES

about the dances

DANCES

by(e)¡gone

Chris Yon, Choreographer A dance located within a metaphorical cloud of interstellar dust that gives birth to stars, which uses the history and structure of the infinite multiverse as a choreographic prompt. This dance wrestles with the ghosts of the spaces we inhabit: The huge, terrible monsters that once lived on these shores. The moves are ritualistic and playful, like a familiar yet foreign game. This dance muses on odd moments captured from everyday awkward human interaction.

city swallow sky

Karinne Keithley Syers, Choreographer city swallow sky plays with refracted views, half-memories, and imagined crowds of imagined cities. Groups intertwine to create intersecting, overlaid views of a scene that feels like a memory, or a story, or a memory of a mostly-forgotten story we heard when we were very young. Co-written by Syers and the cast, the dance is narrated as a forkingpaths game, playing out multiple possible worlds, creating riddles and mirages.

An Apostrophe

Karinne Keithley Syers, Choreographer What will happen in the future? The process of making this dance, titled An Apostrophe, began from that question. The dance becomes an address to the future itself. A spoken and sung sound score, created in collaboration with the performers, accompanies the piece. The dance creates collages of moving images, culled from the dancers' future scenarios: from the sci-fi to the catastrophic to the heroic. Its mood veers from tender to anxious; from tentative to confident.

Playground 2

Melanie RĂos Glaser, Choreographer A new cast adds and contributes material to this sequel to Playground, which first premiered in 2015. Through prompts and tasks, we give the dancers the freedom to access the necessary modes for making work by using their intuition, humor, intelligence, and creativity. The individual is celebrated even when forming a part of the group. Dancers never leave the space, creating containers of empathy for their fellow movers. They live together in a zany, whimsical, and multi-layered world.

lLead Class Partner lClass Partner Lead Class Partners and Class Partners are individuals, companies, and organizations who support the academic, college and career readiness, and college scholarship programs that each of The Wooden Floor’s 10 graduating classes of students need to make their dreams of higher education a reality.

pDance Partner Dance Partner supporters make a difference in the lives of individual students by underwriting one student’s annual participation at The Wooden Floor. Dance Partner students know there is someone outside of their family standing in their corner, encouraging them to overcome challenges and achieve success in school and life. Dance Partners and students stay connected through pen pal letters and optional visits at events and on campus.

nNeighbors A support group that forms a neighborhood to encourage and inspire our youth to succeed by supporting them through time and treasure. Annual and monthly sustaining contributions form a solid foundation for our students to thrive.

alix portillo, class of 2011 Associate Compliance Analyst, Opus Bank BS in Business Administration, Chapman University, 2015

“For me, The Wooden Floor was a safe environment of free expression, where everyone was so open to allowing you to be yourself and to express emotions, thoughts, and feelings without judgment. It was a place full of people who believed in your goals, dreams, and aspirations. It built the confidence I might have completely lacked otherwise. I think The Wooden Floor helped me find my voice, and it really helped me believe that I was important. The Wooden Floor really shaped me into the person I am today. It taught me that anything is

possible and that there are people out there who believe in you, which helped me believe in myself and understand that I am never alone. The Wooden Floor is really more than an organization, it’s a second home. It is the support system that so many children need in order to succeed.  It’s a safe haven, where being you is enough. It helps you gain the confidence and gives you the access to make your dreams a possibility. It’s a family, who is always there for you and never gives up on you.”
