DANCE

Dance is the answer.

At The Wooden Floor, we love dance. It’s powerful. It has the ability to encourage our youth to think differently about themselves, to push through obstacles, and emerge as strong and confident leaders. It’s why our students call us their second home, why on the dance floor they feel supported, able to embody who they really are. It’s why, when partnered with our academic, college and career readiness, and family services, 100 percent of our graduates do what less than half of their socioeconomic peers have done—finish high school on time and enroll in higher education for 13 consecutive years. Through dance, The Wooden Floor provides a solid platform for advancement and success.

Dance moves our youth. Forward.

Rolando, Class of 2023 Four of my sisters were at The Wooden Floor before me. When I went to see them at the Annual Concert, I thought, “I want to be in that!” I just had this feeling in my heart. When you’re dancing, it’s very peaceful, it relieves your stress. It makes me feel like if I have a weird emotion, I can dance it out, instead of yelling or screaming. Being on stage is amazing because there are a lot of people watching you. Once you get that feeling of dancing in front of a lot of people, it gives you a lot of confidence. You’re not afraid to do anything, even outside of dance.

Rolando is in the sixth grade and is one of 10 siblings, five of whom have been at The Wooden Floor. After he graduates high school, he wants to study to become an Army medic.

WELCOME

Welcome to The Wooden Floor’s 34th Annual Concert, Connected spaces. As my term concludes as Chairman of the Board of Directors of this great organization, I reflect on the evolution of The Wooden Floor since I started my term in 2014, as well as our collective new beginnings which lie ahead. The Class of 2017, many of whom you will see on the stage, are all headed to colleges and universities across the nation. In doing so, they fill us with great pride by becoming the largest graduating class our organization has ever seen. As Jocelyn from the Class of 2017 puts it, “Graduating is bittersweet. We’re passing the torch to the younger dancers. As we leave, they will raise the bar higher than it was before.” This sentiment resonates with me. I am very proud of where we are as an organization, and my wife Jane and I are thrilled to see the bar poised to be raised higher than it was before. This fall we will see the opening of The Wooden Floor’s annex location at the Depot at Santiago complex, set to serve 100 more young people and their families. That’s 100 more children who will change the trajectories of their families by focusing on higher education. It is also 100 additional passionate parents, involved in a parent leadership group that is more organized and accomplished than ever. For our students to beat the odds, not only do they have to be dedicated, but so do their parents, and their entire community has to be behind them. Their success is a connector to us all. Please join us! Plan a visit to The Wooden Floor’s energetic campus to see our youth and programs in motion. We are convinced it will inspire you to do all you can to be connected to the success of these bright and beautiful children.

Our 34th Annual Concert is as an opportunity for our students to express themselves in a way in which words just don’t suffice. They express their hopes and also their thanks for your steadfast support and efforts to ensure that they are able to reach for their highest artistic, educational, and personal pursuits. This year’s Annual Concert pieces are interwoven to reflect the humanity and spirit in each child that drives them to overcome adversity and emerge triumphant. Each choreographer asked unique questions of their respective casts as they began to develop their works that you are about to witness: What are you passionate about? What motivates you? What do you want the audience to take away from your performance? The answers were inspiring, uplifting, and positive—our students want to show our community that they bring talent, energy, and courage to make our world a better place. We believe when dance education and performance are strategically integrated with academic tutoring, college and career readiness, as well as family services, our young people thrive. We are expanding the ways in which we are helping our students, and their parents, connect to the life skills they learn through dance, such as creative problem-solving, trust, and empathy. Over their 10-year journeys, we are helping them to seek opportunities to apply those learnings outside the dance studio to become leaders and change agents within our community. Many of our students and alumni volunteer at The Wooden Floor or at other nonprofits in our community, or choose to work in social service fields. They do this because it is a way to express their gratitude. They want to pay forward all the opportunities they received at The Wooden Floor, and make a difference. As we embark on the next step in The Wooden Floor's journey, I hope that this performance inspires you to support and nurture our next generation of young leaders. On their behalf, I thank you.

Sincerely,

Warm Regards,

James A. Driscoll, Chairman of the Board, The Wooden Floor

ABOUT US

About The Wooden Floor Founded in 1983, The Wooden Floor is one of the foremost creative youth development nonprofit organizations in the country. We transform the lives of young people in low-income communities through the power of dance and access to higher education. In Orange County, and through national licensed partners, we use a long-term approach grounded in exploratory dance education to foster the confidence and gifts within each child to innovate, communicate, and collaborate—skills necessary for success in school and in life. 100 percent of students who graduate from The Wooden Floor immediately enroll in higher education. Our students become change agents and beacons of hope within their own families, their neighborhoods, our community, and our world.

Dance Education & Performance Opportunities

Dance education and performance are the core transformational elements through which our youth change the way they think about themselves and aspire beyond the grip of socioeconomic barriers. In the dance studio, exploration, creativity, and self-knowledge lead to critical life skills, confidence, leadership, teamwork, well-being, and joy.

Dance Education Dance classes are offered each week in modern, ballet, and contact improv with professional faculty and live music accompanists.

Creative Development We make a commitment to a dance aesthetic that values exploration, discovery, and innovation, which leads to student success in school and in life.

On Stage Our young artists collaborate with recognized choreographers to create unexpected and challenging works of contemporary dance, performed in professional settings.

Community Engagement Dance Free Weeks™, a community engagement program held in schools throughout Santa Ana and neighboring under-served communities, reaches about 3,000 additional students annually.

ABOUT US

Academic Services & College and Career Readiness Programs

We make a 10-year commitment to our youth from third grade through high school, and guide them through their long-term journeys to higher education. Academic Programs Individualized one-on-one tutoring, homework assistance, remedial workshops, and access to a computer lab and resource library ensure our students meet or exceed grade-level proficiency.

College Scholarships A majority of our graduates qualify for merit-based, fouryear scholarships totaling up to $10,000 from The Wooden Floor.

Family Services & Enrichment Programs

The Wooden Floor provides a safe space for our under-served students to ensure they are supported in their personal and family lives. Through their journeys, creativity is fostered, commitment is fundamental, and discovery occurs every day. Counseling & Crisis Intervention An open-door policy for dealing with crises or parental concerns allows our students and families to feel supported at home. If we can’t provide immediate assistance, we refer them to a community partner.

Family Workshops Parents attend workshops related to financial literacy, parenting, and family health. Additionally, families participate in Family Dance classes as a unit to explore topics of trust, teamwork, communication, and connectedness.

Relationship Building Students receive daily mentoring by The Wooden Floor’s skilled staff, dance faculty, tutors, and volunteers.

College & Career Readiness Programs In the Next Step©, college planning begins in the sixth grade. Career Nights and college tours help our youth select a degree to pursue. SAT and ACT training, college application, and financial aid workshops ensure they are prepared for higher education.

STUDENT SUCCESS

Jocelyn, Class of 2017 When I dance on stage, I feel what I imagine it feels like when you’re in love—you’re scared and nervous, but the love you have for the dance and the passion you have within yourself masks the nervousness. You’re performing for people, but more importantly, you’re performing for yourself. What I learned at The Wooden Floor is the importance of community—that wherever you have the opportunity to give back, you should. I have always felt that here from everybody. I went through a family issue and the support I received from the staff was immense. When you walk in, everyone has open arms and open hearts to help you out, no matter what is going on. This has become my second home, not only because of the people, but also the environment. The Wooden Floor provided me the ability to grow into the person I never knew I’d be able to become.

Jocelyn is graduating from the Orange County School of the Arts with a 3.9 GPA. In the fall she will attend California State University, Long Beach to study dance with an emphasis on dance science and athletic training.

OUR APPROACH TO DANCE 14

Why? For up to 10 years, our students learn to use their bodies to convey feelings and ideas, promoting flexibility both physically and mentally. Physical development is a given with dance, but learning through the body also promotes social, emotional, and intellectual development. Increased focus, reduction of stress, conceptualizing an idea from start to finish, and working to solve problems as a group are just some of the skills dance imparts. As an art form, dance promotes connection not only to oneself but also to a larger audience—in other words, humanity itself. The dancers tap into their own being deeply in order to convey their emotions without using a single word. In an often uncertain world, dance provides our students the safety and courage to persevere. Dance moves our youth. Forward. “The lessons that I learned here at The Wooden Floor extend beyond the dance studio and can be applied to life. They helped me do well in high school, and I know that they will help me through college and beyond.” -CRISTINA, CLASS OF 2016 Majoring in Nursing at the University of California, Los Angeles

15 DANCES

About the Dances Folk Dance in Gold KEELY GARFIELD, CHOREOGRAPHER A modern folk dance of sorts, the ensemble moves together and apart, gathering momentum, moods, and meaning. At first, slowly perambulating the space, the community of dancers probes its boundaries, until each one finds their own place. The dancers pump the energy of the earth into their hearts, by stomping, spinning, sailing through the air, and even singing! Firmly established in the conviction of mutual support, the piece culminates in a thunderous and optimistic outpouring.

Deep Color JOHN HEGINBOTHAM, CHOREOGRAPHER This new work is a landscape set to piano music by the acclaimed pioneering Californian composer Henry Cowell. The story unfolds in five parts: "Deep Color" describes the gorgeous, crashing beauty of the Pacific Ocean at dawn; "The Fairy Answer" is a supernatural conversation in the woods; "Nine Ings: IX. Swaying" displays the tunneling journeys of multi-legged creatures; a high-octane duet unfolds in "The Irishman Dances"; and "High Color" is a big finale celebrating the huge sky.

look down and see the crowd, look up and see the infinite sky LAUREL JENKINS, CHOREOGRAPHER Relentless choreography is central to this new work, generating images of infinity and themes of connection. Dancers magnetically pull each other on stage from a distance with dynamic unison, delivering spontaneous events on stage. The piece includes a film created in collaboration with the dancers to generate a rich visual world without limits.

lLead Class Partner lClass Partner Lead Class Partners and Class Partners are individuals, companies, and organizations who support the academic, college and career readiness, and college scholarship programs that each of The Wooden Floor’s 10 graduating classes of students need to make their dreams of higher education a reality.

pDance Partner Dance Partner supporters underwrite a student’s annual participation at The Wooden Floor. Dance Partner students know there is someone outside of their family standing in their corner, encouraging them to overcome challenges and achieve success in school and life. Dance Partners and students stay connected through pen pal letters and optional visits at events and on campus.

nNeighbors A group of committed supporters who form a neighborhood to inspire our youth to succeed. Annual and sustaining monthly gifts provide the support our students can count on.

Sophie, Class of 2008 A major part of my life's story starts at The Wooden Floor. The studios, the academic support, the friendships, and the guidance. I became who I am because of this place. Personally, I don't know what path my life might have taken if not for The Wooden Floor. I have positivity, discipline, hope, and so much more—and it started with dance. I learned that I could do anything. There is no stopping me, and I do not doubt myself. The Wooden Floor also helped me with getting to college. For one, my mother has a learning disability and had no way of helping me understand the process, paperwork, and what exactly I needed to prepare myself. The Wooden Floor made clear exactly what I had to do on my end. I am forever grateful I was given that assistance. Once I was in college, I never felt their support ended. It's hard to choose just one memory from The Wooden Floor, but when I look back, I remember the closeness of our community. Everyone I met and learned from only wanted me to succeed. The feeling of inclusion at such a critical age means so much. I wish the whole world knew about this place, to see the wonderful things children can accomplish. If the world followed The Wooden Floor’s example, it would be such a different place.

Sophie received a BA in Multimedia Communications from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2015. She is currently a Technical Producer and On-Camera Talent for Pixel Corps, a San Rafael-based digital media production company. After living in the Bay Area, she recently returned to reside and start a family in Santa Ana.
