Our Environmental RESPONSIBILITY For a number of years now The Wooden Toy Box has used the Carbon4Good programme as a voluntary and unaccredited carbon offset tool for our business, where carbon is offset into local tree planting projects across New Zealand. So far, in the last 5 years, we have planted 15 Oak trees, 30 Alder trees, 30 Maple trees and 50 Manuka trees and over 200 natives. This equates to approximately 400 tonnes of carbon that these trees will sequester in their lifetime. This year though we are going to use the Sustainable Business Network’s stream bank planting programme, the Million Metres Streams Project (MMS). MMS is New Zealand’s first conservation website which aims to help restore the health of New Zealand waterways through crowd funding. MMS was launched in 2014 as a response to pressing issues of improving water quality, enhancing biodiversity, reducing runoff from paddocks into streams and developing a community response and call to action to protect and enhance waterways across New Zealand. Field partners like QEII Trust and councils, team up with land owners to implement the MMS. These groups plant native grasses, flaxes and trees along stream banks to support our waterway health. This year The Wooden Toy Box is going to fund 40 metres of stream bank planting. This will see a large amount of flaxes and grasses planted, along with a considerable number of larger trees running beside the river bank offering ground retention, habitat and carbon absorption. We’ll keep you updated on what stream our offsetting goes towards and you can track our progress. Our rivers and streams need our help if they are to continue to remain clean and pristine – the Government will do their part but we believe we all need to help out to protect these natural resources.
