by Rev. Chris McLain, Pastor of Caring and Adults 55+ Ministry
The final stanza of the great hymn Comfort, Comfort Ye My People is as follows:
O make straight what long was crooked, Make the rougher places plain; Let your hearts be true and humble, As befits his holy reign. For the glory of the Lord Now o’er earth is shed abroad; And all flesh shall see the token That his word is never broken.
Given the turmoil that persists in our world and in our hearts from day to day, we still have a great need for Jesus to arrive.
As we stand on our tiptoes to peer into the dank and dingy manger where the Son of God rests, we then recognize we have a need for Him to take hold of our fleshly ways. As we make our way to the front and our feet sit flatly on the floor, we all of a sudden feel the need to kneel. Upon doing so, we see Jesus. Even in His newborn, infant state, from out of the straw, Jesus peers deeply into our eyes and calls us to the path of truth and humility and the words of Jeremiah 23 ring in your ear:
“I myself, [the Lord] will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing.” (vs.3-4)
How often do we pridefully travel the crooked path only to realize that it is not the way Jesus has called us to? For some, it is a challenge to our sedentary, comfortable life. Jesus calls us to be people of action, stepping out in faith to use our gifts. For others, it is a call to slow down and listen intently to the Holy Spirit. Also, there are those to whom God is saying, “Feast, on my word.” He is calling you back to the pasture and to seek the kingdom’s ways of living.
Advent is a time where we refocus on God’s incredible provision by zooming out thousands of years and seeing God’s plan of salvation made manifest — a plan that assures us that we will not need to live a terrified or fearful life and we won’t be counted as the “missing.” Instead, we will be counted among the found.
You and I have once again been offered a gift — the gift to start again, to walk in the light and acknowledge our missteps. We are being given the gift to proclaim the final words of this hymn not only through our voices in worship but also through actions that affirm our belief in God’s holy plan “that his word is never broken.”
Happy Advent and Merry Christmas from the McLains!
CELEBRATE THE SEASON
Christmas is a season filled with joy — from the gatherings to the gifts, from the lights to the music. But the true joy of Christmas is Jesus. Let’s embrace that joy and let it fill our hearts, our homes and our communities.
This Christmas, celebrate the joy of the season with us at The Woodlands Methodist Church on our four campuses in The Woodlands, Woodforest, Montgomery and Creekside. “Let every heart prepare Him room” as we rejoice in God’s gift to us all — Jesus.
We offer a variety of services to meet the needs of the community.
• Family Christmas service
• Special needs family worship
• Traditional candlelight worship
• Casual/contemporary candlelight worship
• A special service for those who are grieving
Services are in person and online. Scan the QR code for a full schedule of services and events.
We spent nine beautiful days in Ireland. Some of the highlights included St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity College in Dublin to view the Book of Kells, the House of Waterford, the Blarney Castle, and the Gallarus oratory on the Dingle peninsula. We visited the Ennis Friary, Kylemore Abbey in Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher.
