by Rev. Chris McLain, Pastor of Caring and Adults 55+ Ministry
It’s going to be a hairy Thanksgiving. Let’s face it — there is at least one person who didn’t vote the way that you did.
I want to provide you a simple reminder: Conversion is a process.
A shouting match over the cranberry sauce will probably add the carcass of your relationship next to the turkey’s on the table, and may actually ruin your midafternoon, tryptophaninduced nap.
As we step into November and the season of Thanksgiving, it’s a wonderful time to pause and reflect on the many blessings we have. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 calls us to “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” This verse is a powerful reminder that gratitude isn’t just for the good times — it’s a posture we’re called to maintain in every season of life.
Instead, prepare your heart to respond with grace when you disagree. Proverbs 3:3-4 reminds us: “Let love and faithfulness never leave you. … Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.”
For our family, this season offers a special opportunity for my wife, Kristen, and me to teach our children — Wesley (6), Rhett (5) and Ella (3) — about the blessings in their lives. Recently, during bedtime prayers, I asked each of them to share something they were thankful for. Wesley mentioned his friends at school, Rhett expressed gratitude for our dog, and sweet little Ella, in her pure innocence, simply said, “Thank you, Jesus!” These moments warm my heart and remind me that gratitude goes beyond just recognizing good things — it’s about nurturing a spirit of thankfulness and sharing it with others. As we guide our children to recognize and appreciate their blessings, we’re reminded to slow down and reflect on the countless ways God
While we all have many things to be grateful for — our families, health and friendships — our deepest gratitude is for Jesus. Through His life, death and resurrection, He has given us a hope that transcends every circumstance. When we truly grasp this, gratitude naturally overflows, shaping how we live and how we serve. This season invites us to consider how we can respond to Jesus’ love by serving others.
How you respond is more important than winning the argument because you’re preparing for the conversation at Christmas instead of this one. Do you want to be asking forgiveness at Christmas or be able to reference the grace you shared in relation to God’s grace shared through Jesus’ arrival?
I’m also incredibly thankful for our church. The Woodlands Methodist Church is more than just a place of worship; it’s a community where we live out our mission of reaching people for Jesus, discipling them in faith, and helping those in need. Through worship, small groups and outreach, we are continually reminded of God’s love and grace. This Thanksgiving, I encourage you to think about how we can express our gratitude by serving others within the church and beyond. Colossians 3:17 reminds us, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” By serving others, we reflect the heart of our church’s mission and share the grace we’ve been given.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let’s take time to reflect on the many ways God has blessed us and how we can respond with grateful hearts through acts of service. If you ever want to meet, pray together or talk, I’m always here to walk alongside you. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
You’re playing the long game, running the marathon, and doing the work of the kingdom. The kingdom doesn’t rely on only emotion, or one political view or candidate. Instead, it relies on a God who loves all people, moving them toward holiness, and it realizes that conversion cannot happen when people are more focused on their heels being dug in than their heart being understood.
You can do this, but it will take preparation. Conversion is a process!
This summer we spent time exploring Eastern Canada.
