An official ‘Commencement of Works Ceremony’ was held at the Rural School of Health on June 20. This will be the first ever University of Melbourne community clinic. something new to me. So as you can imagine, I’ve been eating quite a bit of toast lately. The fact that my old two-slice toaster can now be donated to a museum demonstrates how often I actually go shopping. The new toaster is pretty high tech though. It defrosts and toasts bread rolls, but can it make coffee? (unfortunately not) I am quite technically challenged so it will probably take me the next decade to master it, but I’m up for the challenge!! Anyone for toast? Happy Reading!

The small miracle

ROSEMARY Boyd’s birthday brought a small miracle to Kialla last week. The Seven Creek behind Rosemary and her husband Ian’s home began to flow. The creek had been, in Ian’s words, “as dry as a chip� for so many months they couldn’t remember when it last flowed. Ian had gone outside to feed and water the chooks that morning, and was amazed to see trickles of water as the shallow puddles begin to join together. And it kept filling all day. It was not that there’d been any rain; there had also not been any showers for months, more like years, “Nothing in the 2000s anyway!� they said. There was no explanation beyond one of the party guests who travels extensively in veterinary supplies mentioning “springs� becoming active east of Euroa. The Adviser sought information, not from normal sources, as one venerable farmer from the hills said, “Don’t bother the water commission blokes, they don’t believe in it!� “The guys who have farmed up in the hills for years swear by it!� was the first response from a Caniambo grazier. He said the springs rise through atmospheric pressure which draws the spring water up out

of subterranean sources. No one knows why and when it might occur. But when it does, he said, the “old-timers� know it as the drought-breaker. “Heavy rains will follow after about a month,� he said. The farmers say there are springs in several places in the highlands country. They source creeks such as the Seven and the Honeysuckle in the Strathbogie Ranges. The beautiful little falls known as “Polly McQuinn’s� is believed to have spring sources. Two girls disappeared at Polly McQuinn’s and their bodies have never been found. Polly McQuinn’s, a picturesque picnic spot between Strathbogie and Merton, although also dangerous because death adder snakes favor it as a habitat, has never been depthed. Water from the highlands springs is pure, clear and cold. Some farmers have tried to utilise springs for regular water supplies, but generally with little success, as it has been found that tampering with their natural processes somehow ruins their mysterious reactions in drier times. The highland farmers, particularly those of a long history on the land, are adamant the rising of the springs in the hills is a precursor of “big rains�.

Dear Editor, A recent report announced the re-opening of the old Hawqua miner’s track, following excellent work by volunteers and DSE This track was so overgrown with blackberry and thistles it had to be re-surveyed on horseback. While a comprehensive weedspraying program of the area has reportedly now been undertaken, you cannot help but wonder why this area was allowed to reach such degraded state in the first place. It seems when tracks are closed and timber workers, cattlemen; shooters and other public land user groups are locked out of the areas they soon become infested with weeds and vermin. While Government departments waste money on useless investigations that do little but change names and disadvantage some user groups, our bush land becomes more and more degraded. Getting to know… Amanda Harry Amanda Harry is the Executive Assistant to Family Care’s CEO. Family Care is a not for profit organisation in Shepparton which offers a wide range of services for the community. These include services for children, families, the aged, disability services as well as a number of community programs. Family Care relies heavily on the support of the community to continue to provide these important services. 1. Describe what your perfect day would be (money is no object)? Start the day by being surrounded by family. Then head to the beach on a beautiful sunny day, enjoy some delicious seafood and white wine. Finish by snuggling up on the couch with my husband, watching the ocean. 2. Who do you admire most, and why? My Mum. I admire her both personally and professionally, for what she’s achieved. She has been a great role model for me. 3. What’s the best and worst thing about your job? The best is its ever changing and challenging, there’s never a dull moment! It gives me such satisfaction to see what the agency can provide for the community. The worst is not having the chance to get outside of the office. 4. What makes you really mad? Inconsiderate people. 5. If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things would you take with you? My husband, a good easy to read “trashy” romance novel and a bottomless bottle of sav blanc.

Amanda’s favourite recipe! Thai Green Chicken Curry Ingredients: 500gms chicken-diced 1 onion-thickly sliced 2 cups of beans 2 tspn lemon grass

1 tbls green curry paste 2 cups of light coconut cream Dash of lime juice ¼ cup of fresh coriander-chopped

Method: 1. Place chicken and onion in a well oiled wok and cook until the chicken is golden brown. 2. Add coconut cream, lemon grass, the dash of lime and curry paste (you can add additional curry paste if you like it hot!) 3. Bring to the boil, stirring occasionally.

4. Add beans and simmer for 15 minutes, allowing the liquid to reduce. 5. Serve on a bed of rice and garnish with fresh coriander. 6. Enjoy with a nice, crisp glass of sauvignon blanc.

CHANTAL graduated from Shepparton High School in 1998, and has managed to experience many different things in the ten years since she left school. From 1999-2000 Chantal did her Diploma of Interior Decoration and Design in Geelong. She then moved to Melbourne in 2001 to work as an interior design assistant for an architectural firm. Unfortunately, the firm folded approximately six months after taking Chantal on, so she returned home to Shepparton and did a season at the SPC Ardmona Cannery. Cashed up and ready for adventure, Chantal headed over to the USA in 2002 where she worked for two months as a canoe instructor for Camp USA. She then spent a month travelling throughout America, stopping off in New York, Washington DC and LA. In 2003 Chantal came back to Shepparton where she worked for ten months at Liberty Kitchens, helping people with quotes and designs. It was during this time that Chantal met her boyfriend, Grant Burrows. The following

year they moved to Airlie Beach, where they bought an investment property. During this time, Chantal worked at a golf club, in a bank and then in 2006 she returned to her design work, taking a position with a landscape architect. A year later, Chantal and Grant travelled overseas for nine months, through America, UK, Europe, Africa and Asia. It was during this time, while they were in Paris that Grant proposed to Chantal under the Eiffel Tower. The pair returned to Shepparton at the beginning of this year and Chantal returned to her job with Liberty Kitchens. They have just recently bought a house, and will wed in November. When asked where she sees herself in five years time, Chantal said she and Grant will hopefully have some children. They also plan to build up their investment property portfolio, and they will either stay in Shepparton, or move back to Airlie Beach…only time will tell!

The Child Care Tax Rebate is a payment for parents or guardians who are working, studying or training. The Child Care Tax Rebate is not income tested. Families can now receive up to $7500 a year for each child in approved care. The Child Care Tax Rebate will be paid quarterly or as an annual lump sum payment.

VICSES’s 140 operational and 10 support units will receive essential rescue equipment that will be used to carry out their invaluable work serving the community. AAMI Home Claims Manager, Angela Figueroa, said this was the sixth year of the sponsorship during which time the leading insurer had contributed rescue equipment to the VICSES. “Since 2003, AAMI has funded more than $1.5 million worth of rescue equipment, with items such as GPS transmitters, car stabilisation kits and chainsaws going to every SES unit across Victoria as part of our extensive partnership. We’re pleased to support the VICSES, whose volunteers give so generously of their time in training and responding to natural disasters and other emergencies,” Ms Figueroa said. Mary Barry, Chief Executive Officer, VICSES, thanked AAMI for its continued support. “The contribution that AAMI makes is of immense value to VICSES volunteers – the equipment funded by AAMI helps our 5500 volunteers provide a vital emergency service role in their local communities,” Ms Barry said.

VOLUNTEERS are urgently needed to join The Cancer Council’s telephone peer support service, Cancer Connect. Cancer Connect links cancer patients, survivors, family members and people who carry the cancer susceptibility gene with trained volunteers who have been through a similar cancer experience. Demand for the service means ‘family’ volunteers who have had a partner, family member or close friend diagnosed with cancer are needed to provide one to one telephone support to others. Cancer Connect gives people the opportunity to talk to someone who really does understand what they are going through. Alcohol is a drug too!

IT was Drug Action Week June 22nd28th. This year’s theme was “alcohol is a drug too”. The week kicked off with an official launch at Shepparton’s Visy Centre with year 10 students from Wanganui Park Secondary College and Greater Shepparton Mayor Eric Bott taking part in some very interesting activities, including wearing “beer goggles” and trying to play ball games with an altered “drunk” perception. Mobile Drug Safety Worker, Merri Blair from Goulburn Valley Community Heath Service said what was most interesting of about all of the launch activities was the impressive response to the alcohol myths and legends quiz which led to discussions about alcohol and binge drinking. Merri said, “We thought the discussion sessions would be the least popular part of the launch, but they all ended up going over time because everyone had so much to contribute.” Goulburn Valley Community Heath Service spent the week travelling to Euroa, Cobram and Numurkah with the Drug Action Week travelling road show, spreading several very important messages. The first being that “alcohol is

a drug too” placing a particular emphasis on the problem of binge drinking. Residents in the towns that were visited were also reminded that Goulburn Valley Health service towns outside of Shepparton. In fact, counsellors can be arranged to visit on a weekly basis if necessary. Mobile Drug Safety Worker, Merri Blair from Drug Action Plan Project Worker Jo Hudson from Goulburn Valley Health both hailed the event a “great success”. However education and awareness of these problems must be ongoing. Jo Hudson said “I am currently negotiating with the Department of Education about having a drug and alcohol counsellor present at state secondary schools parent teacher interviews. IT’S not every day that you will find three Roman saints in Shepparton. This week, the relics of the Young Passionists Saints Gemma Galgani, St Maria Goretti and St Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, who are the designated Patrons of the Passionist World Youth Day events, were at St Brendan’s Catholic Church accompanied by Father Tiernan Doherty. Sydney will host the XXIII World Youth Day from 15th to 20th July. A Catholic event, open to all, the event will also mark the first visit to Australia of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

IT all started two years ago when Grandad Darrel Pell and Grandson Tom Schumann were spending time together on Grandad’s 800 cow dairy farm at Wyuna. They decided they wanted to explore the world, Grandad said, “when I retire the whole family will go.” Two years later Gran and Grandad Jan and Darrel, together with daughter Jodie, husband Mark plus Elly aged 11, Tom aged 8 and Ben aged 6 all set off for exotic Africa. The five-week adventure would turn out to be the trip of a lifetime, and would open up a new world of experience for the family. They flew into South Africa to Johannesburg overnight and then onto

Makutsi Safari Lodge, a private game reserve. Up early each morning for a 6am game drive; they saw so many animals; elephants, lions, cheetahs and antelope. At one point a lion walked right up to their stationary open top vehicle. Jodie felt a little concerned, particularly with the children onboard. Elly wasn’t sure, but the boys just loved it. All was OK and the photos were just great. The game drives took place each morning and evening. During their six-night stay they met other families from Australia and made some good friends. They went on a game walk with a ranger and armed warden. A family of cheetahs had been electronically tagged. Soon they

mastered the art of using their trunks for the dust bath, so they just rolled in it. One big elephant got upset with their presence so it flapped its ears, raised its trunk and trumpeted at them. Everyone now realised that this was not a zoo, they were really out in the wild, with wild animals. Victoria Falls was next. On arrival in this part of Zimbabwe Jodie soon realized that the troubles affecting this country could be seen here. There was no food in the shops, the locals actually had to cross the boarder to find something to eat. Tourists were ok but the menu was probably not as extensive as it could have been. The Falls were just amazing there was so much water. It was awesome to watch 550 million litres a minute rushing over the falls. Misty spray was everywhere. They were told to take raincoats but it didn’t matter, you were soon drenched. It must be the years of drought in the Goulburn Valley because the whole family just stood there with grins on their faces as they got a complete soaking. That night they decided to do a night drive to see what animals they could find. They were in luck, the leopards where out. Locals said they had not been seen in this area for some three months but tonight they were there and the family had now seen the big five! On the next leg of this family adventure they flew to Tanzania. This was a highlight for Jodie. As they drove to their lodge in the national park they saw a lioness in a tree. Their guide drove right up to it until their vehicle was almost underneath the lion. They sat taking photos, looking at the lioness and she looked back at them. She was so close she could have jumped into their vehicle but no, all was well, and the lion continued to use its perch to look out over the long grass for prey. They had more wonderful experiences as they visited the Ngorongro Crater and its unique collection of animals; they hardly ever leave their abundant habitat. It was then onto the Serengeti’s wideopen savannah with breathtaking views of animals walking across the wide-open plane. Finally they left their adventure in

Africa and flew to the quite island of Mauritius. It was time for some “R&R”. Everyone agreed that there would be no planned activities for the first three days. So it was time to just lie back on the beach and relax, and watch the crystal clear blue water. The kids did do some snorkelling, and of course they had to visit the capital Port Louis, renowned for its duty free shopping, but all in all it was time to wind down. Back in Kyabram the kids are still taking about their adventure. Gran and Grandad have gone home to Barooga but of course there are the phone calls as Tom and Grandad tell their stories to each other about what they saw. For Jodie and Mark it was just so wonderful to have the whole family share this adventure together. This truly was a ‘family on safari’.

found a mother and cub. They got very close and kept very quite. Next was a visit to a local village. The village school, which is part funded by the game lodge, has 800 students and only four classrooms. As they approached it seemed like all 800 students ran to greet them! Ben being the smallest was a little concerned he would be knocked over but he had nothing to worry about, as they soon made new friends. The visit was an eye opener for the children to see how the students lived. Lunch was being cooked. The school provided one meal a day from big cauldrons set on fires in the schoolyard. For many it was their only meal of the day. The students were so excited, they all wanted to have their photo taken so they could see it back on the camera. Next day was a tour of the Kruger National Park with a stop at the Blyde R i v e r C a n y o n . I t w a s s p e c t a c u l a r. The other Aussies said it looked like something from Australia’s far north. They then flew to Botswana and the Okavango Delta. The wetlands were so beautiful, Jodie just loved their time there. Out on the water they saw hippos, one of the most dangerous animals in all of Africa. They have a habit of overturning boats and killing their occupants. Today they were kept at a respectful distance from the boat. Their guide Nelson was very popular with the kids and together they found wonderful bird life, giraffe, buffalo, elephants and much more. They flew to Choba River and its national park. Only 6 seater light planes were available so they had to hire two to accommodate the family. Jodie noticed as they approached the runway, the ranger was shooing off the animals so they could land. At the river there were elephants everywhere from little babies to big bull elephants, all having a drink and a bath. It was fun to watch them in the water. The adult elephants would use their trunks to cover themselves with dust, partly to keep insects off and also as a sunscreen. The baby elephants had not yet

ON Thursday the 19th of June, Berry Street held a thankyou evening for sponsors and supporters of the 3rd Annual Berry Street Golf Tournament and the first Berry Street Cup. The Better Buddies Framework is an initiative designed to create friendly and caring primary school communities where bullying is reduced. ‘Buddies’ form unique relationships, which allow younger students to feel safe and cared for and older students to feel valued and respected. Eddie Jackson the supreme artiste THE most exquisitely entrancing of all footballers seen by Adviser Sport was a “local”, an Aboriginal from Echuca, who made Melbourne top 150 and eventually retired in venerable, highly respected “old age” at Thornton. He was Eddie ‘Action’ Jackson. His father, of the same name, was coach of Echuca East. Eddie Jnr was 21 when he left the Murray River town to join Melbourne, and played 15 games in his first senior season, 1947, to win the Demons best first year player. Team mate, later Demons captain and successful captain-coach of the most powerful country club anywhere in the mid-20th century, Rochester, of the early 1960s, Noel McMahen, described Jackson as “greased lightning”. “Aboriginal players were not as common as they are now,” McMahen told ‘Demon’ magazine. “Doug Nicholls had played at Fitzroy, and Essendon had Norm McDonald, a wonderful player, a dashing half back. ‘But those skills people see in Aboriginal players now were what made Eddie great. “He had amazing reflexes and he was a very accurate and telling kick.

“He truly was a great player, no doubt about it,” McMahen said. Jackson was selected 19th man in Melbourne’s 1948 grand final team against Essendon and played in both grand finals that year. It was the first ever tied VFL grand final and Melbourne won the replay the following week. McMahen recalled an incident from the grand final which showed Jackson’s phenomenal reflexes and skill. He said Jackson was running alongside an opponent who bounced the ball. “Eddie put his hand in and hooked the ball away and turned and ran away and the fellow was still going in the opposite direction when Eddie took off. “He was like a cat with his reflexes,” McMahen marvelled. Jackson played on the wing at 175 centimetres tall and weighing 70 kilograms. Being so lightly built in probably the toughest era ever of the VFL he suffered his share of heavy knocks and injuries. He possessed electrifying pace and specialised in deadly accurate droppunt passing, in fact one of the leading exponents of that type of kick, which is now the staple method of foot disposal of

the modern game which took predominance when Ron Barassi forbade use of the dropkick at Carlton in the later 1960s. Melbourne’s 1949 Annual Report stated: “The centreline, comprising Jackson, Bickford, and Dockett, has been ranked, by some experts, as the best centreline Melbourne has ever had.” After 84 games with Melbourne from 1947-52 Jackson returned to country football and won the Bendigo League’s Michelsen Medal in 1954. He became one of the first Aboriginal footballers to take on coaching, and did so wherever his job with the State Electricity Commission took him - Mildura, Alexandra and finally Thornton. Eddie Jackson is recalled with awe by veterans who remember him still playing well into his 40s in the now extinct Waranga-North East League. His skills included some never seen used by any other player. Eddie Jackson had a reverse stab kick in his armoury in which he would pass the ball from hand to hand around to behind his back, lower it to the ground and stab pass it with precise accuracy with his heel, responding to a team mate’s voice for his target.

Adviser Sport has been told this was no “party trick” Jackson used to demonstrate at training or coaching clinics, but a pass he actually used in matches. Jackson retired at 65 as an SEC linesman and went to live at Frankston, where his sons played with The Pines Football Club in the Mornington Peninsula-Nepean League.

Dazzling dozen among Demons ‘Heroes’

TWELVE players from Goulburn Murray district leagues are among Melbourne Football Club’s 150 ‘Heroes’ named in celebration of the Australian Football League oldest club’s 150 years. First was noted aerial specialist Jack Mueller, most recent is still playing Adam Yze. In between have been a variety of stars in appearance, physical stature, and type. The common denominator is all were champions, and of such character it is difficult to say “more or less” as all 12 were huge contributors to the Australian/ Victorian Football League Demons both on and off field. All have enduring fame, although one in particular has a reputation in several spheres of the game that means his reputation will grow as time progresses. That one is Garry Lyon, who captained the Demons, starred as one of their best ever players, and now is the leading media personality of the game in television, radio, and newspapers.

Lyon does, however, have spaces in his record he would certainly wish to have filled, but which appear to have passed him by. He never played in a premiership and he has never coached. Lyon has one unusual aspect, not often cited, nor generally known. He is always listed as recruited from Kyabram, although he never, in fact, played with Kyabram seniors in the Goulburn Valley League. But he did, as a teenager, play briefly with Tongala when his father, Peter, coached the Blues for a short time. Five of the Goulburn Murray recruits to Melbourne did play in VFL premierships. Jack Mueller and John Lord both played in four premierships, Gerald ‘Terry’ Gleeson in two, Eddie Jackson in two, Adrian Dullard in two, and Barrie Vagg in one. Some will be surprised to find that three Echuca players Mueller, Lord and Jackson shared 10 VFL flags. Much of Mueller’s reputation rests with his ability as forward, but he was so versatile he could play in all the key positions and was so intelligent the Demons named him vice-captain from the age of 23 to the master centreman Alan La Fontaine. They led Melbourne to consecutive flags in 1939-40-41. Mueller was also best afield in the Demons’ 1946 grand final loss to Essendon. Captain-coach of the seconds from 1947, ‘Checker’ Hughes commandeered Mueller for the 1948 finals and he kicked 20 goals in three senior finals, a premiership-winning effort, which included the drawn grand final and replay. John Lord was not a permanent senior player in the Demons’ champion 1950s-‘60s sides, but was in form at the right time to be in the 1957, ’59, ’60 and ’64 flagwinning teams, including best-on-ground at centre half back in 1960. He tells a self-effacing anecdote that he led the Brownlow Medal voting one year. Which was correct; Lord was the first

name out of the ballot. Gleeson, much less remembered than his younger brother Brian, who won the 1957 Brownlow Medal, both brothers recruited from Berrigan, New South Wales, nevertheless had an extremely successful career, appearing in the 1955 and ’56 premiership sides. ‘Spud’ Dullard, from Rochester, played in the 1941 and ’48 premierships. Barrie Vagg, from Shepparton was a highly skilled half forward flank specialist who played in Melbourne’s last winning grand final side in 1964. ‘Vaggie’ had an amusing anecdote he told which reflected the character of his no-nonsense coach Norm Smith, often regarded as the finest mentor of all. Vagg approached Smith one evening after training at Melbourne Cricket Ground to ask how he might improve his kicking (although Vagg, incidentally, was a splendid kick with either right or left foot). ‘Smithie’ replied gruffly: “Get the ball more often, son!” Shepparton United’s Chris Connolly chose recruitment by Melbourne rather than father-son access to Footscray, where his father Barry played 13 games in 1958 before returning to the country. Like several of the others Connolly was plagued by injuries, in his case knees, which restricted him to 84 games before enforced retirement and seeking coaching and administration alternatives. Dillon preceded Lyon from Kyabram to the Demons, an exceptional marking half forward but an unreliable kick. He too suffered a knee injury in his prime, but moved later to South Australia. Rodney Grinter carried the family and club hallmarks with him when he joined the Demons from Katandra - surely the finest district league club in Victorian country football of the second half of the 20th century - and within a short time was firmly established among League football’s irrepressible ironmen. Grinter was not only a grand player but extremely popular clubman.

Adem Yze is the only one of the 12 still playing, and is last on the list not only because of long service, but also alphabetically. He played a remarkable 226 games consecutively to the second round of 2007. When Melbourne’s sesquicentenary was mooted media conducted numerous interviews with notable Demons of the past, many enquiring their opinions on the merits of their finest team mates over the years. Most featured the great and famous champions of the past, inevitably Barassi, Robbie Flower, Lyon were named and lavished with praise as the marvels of Melbourne’s 150 years. Asked to name his stand-out team mate over more than a decade he ranked, without hesitation, winger Stephen Tingay. ‘Stinga’ was afflicted with the curse that blighted Connolly, Dillon, and Lyon, only more devastatingly. Tingay managed to amass 162 games, but managed to do so only by persevering in three separate interludes plus the tragic death of his mother Lorna in a motoring accident at Nagambie when returning home to Shepparton from a match in Melbourne, all exacerbated by discovery of a congenital hip joint abnormality that made playing throughout his career sheer agony. One of his injury episodes resulted from a horrifying accident by a crash through a plate glass door that left him with a severely gashed right thigh and heavy loss of blood.
