1185 Baltimore Ave. SE Grafe, who is visitor services manager for the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge complex, will describe the birds that visit and nest on Oregon’s coast, particularly on the offshore rocks of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Her slide show will be rich with beautiful images of the birds that frequent Oregon’s waters, and she will provide a wealth of information about their life histories. Grafe is responsible for managing volunteers, environmental education, interpretation and outreach for Bandon Marsh, Nestucca Bay, Oregon Islands, and Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuges. She has a Bachelor of Science in wildlife ecology and a Master of Science in wildlife biology. This free public event is open to everyone as part of CoastWatch’s ongoing mission to increase public awareness and understanding of coastal resources and how to protect them. CoastWatch is a program of the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition.

EVERYONE INTERESTED in birds and coastal natural history is invited to a free public slide talk on the seabirds of the Oregon coast. The CoastWatch program is hosting a presentation by biologist Dawn Grafe of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 7 p.m. today, June 1, at the Bandon Public Library, 1204 11th St., S.W.

Bandon, Oregon For more information about the event or about CoastWatch, contact Phillip Johnson, 503- 754-9303, phillip@oregonshores.org. The seabirds that don’t survive each year may wash up on our shoreline, so Grafe’s talk ties into another bird-related even taking place in Bandon the next day. On Saturday, June 2, CoastWatch co-sponsors a Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team beached bird survey training session from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., also at the Bandon library. This event also is free and open to the public. COASST seeks to train new volunteers to help monitor beached birds on southern Oregon coast beaches, but those who simply want to learn more about birds that wash up on our shores are welcome. Volunteers for the survey do not need to be experienced with birds. For more information about the COASST training or to RSVP, contact Annie Woods at coasst@uw.edu or 206-221-6893.
