For the do-it-yourselfer there are hundreds of lakes and rivers, and hundreds of miles of coastline to explore. ODFW”s extensive website offers information about how and where to fish for trout, bass, steelhead and surfperch, to name a few. If you’d like a little more help getting started, ODFW and its partners are sponsoring Free Fishing Weekend events throughout the state.

A TALENT SHOW for 14 and younger will be held at the Chili Cookoff on Saturday, June 16, 2 p.m. at the Port Orford Community Building in Port Orford. There is a $100 prize for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third. Those interested are asked to call or text Jennifer at 541-253-6895. FISHING, CRABBING and clamming are great Oregon traditions, and during Free Fishing Weekend on June 9 and10 everyone can do them for free. Bandon, Oregon At most events there will be free fishing equipment first-time anglers can use, and special events planned for children. Volunteers will be available to help. Even anglers who have never baited a hook can learn to fish. At the Elk River Hatchery, a fishing event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 9 for children 10 and younger. At Powers Pond, children 16 and under can participate in a free fishing event from 8 a.m. to noon June 9.
