IN PURSUIT of a $100,000 Nashville music contract, five more contestants advanced in the Texaco Country Showdown May 24. Jayme Jamieson, Wesley Wear, Brooke Barich, Jeremy Cawley and Clint Guevara moved on to the local finals, which will be held in July. They will join Dan Covert, Brittany Bethea, Bryan Evanz, Joseph Michael and the singing duo Duality. On Thursday, June 14, a Wildcard Round offers contestants voted out a chance to get back in the competition. The event opens with local band Border Patrol warming up the audience starting at 7 p.m. at the Hales Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is $5 at the door, and proceeds benefit Oregon Coast Culinary Institute students who will travel to Germany to represent the USA in the Culinary Olympics. Follow the results at www. SOUTHWESTERN OREGON Oregon Rose Society will hold its 35th annual rose show from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Harbortown Events Center, 325 Second St. S.E., in Bandon. There is no charge for admittance. The show is open to everyone. Entries will be accepted from 7 to 9:30 a.m. the day of the show. “Entering this show is just like entering in the county fair, except the roses must be named,” said organizer Mike Kelly. “If you don’t know the name, members will identify it.” After judging, the show will open at 12:30 p.m. There will be a class on rose growing and the latest developments in disease control at 2 p.m. New to the show this year is a sale of a limited number of member-grown roses, at reasonable prices, Kelly said.
