Bandon, Oregon their ballots at Tony’s Crab Shack all summer long, combined with the selections made by Yoncalla artist Susan Applegate. Many Bandon residents are familiar with Applegate’s illustrations for her cousin Shannon Applegate’s book “Skookum,” a history of the Applegate pioneer family, or have seen her paintings and murals and museum dioramas throughout the state. There are 195 paintings of dragons by local artists (both amateur and professional) by students from Harbor Lights Middle School and Jen Ells art classes at Bandon High School that have been on display on the boardwalk since early June. A giant dragon windsock created by local artist Vicki Affatati with help from students and Tina Peterson was added during the Port of BandonÕs WindFest in August. Saturday, following the announcement of the awards by project organizer Victoria Tierney and project teacher Affatati, the ribbons for all the winning pieces will be attached to the paintings, so those interested will be able to see the names of the winning paintings and artists. In addition to funding the teachers for this project and providing the cash for the awards, AVK Arts has also donated the money to purchase a dozen of the Year of the Dragon books created by Cleone Reed, which will be placed in all three Bandon School libraries, as well as in the public libraries of Coos and Curry counties. Reed will be present at the awards ceremony as well to show the book and talk a little about its creation.
